Del Piero: Pogba will prove worthy of Juventus No.10

    paul-pogba-cropped_1jsw7iz2bafho1lgik2nbfzzxf.jpg

Alessandro Del Piero believes Paul Pogba will prove worthy of the iconic No.10 shirt at Juventus if given time.

Pogba was handed the jersey – previously worn by the likes of Michel Platini, Roberto Baggio and Del Piero himself – following the departure of Carlos Tevez to Boca Juniors in June.

Despite initial expectations, the 22-year-old has suffered a dip in form this season, supplying just two assists and scoring three goals in Serie A, with the Serie A champions lying fourth.

Nevertheless, Del Piero still considers the midfielder his heir, and has backed him to eventually demonstrate what is expected of a player in the famed shirt.

"I don't know [if it was right to give Pogba the No.10], but Paul is a player with a lot of talent," the former Bianconeri captain told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"If we think the No.10 should be given to a player that impresses with his style of play then he is the right man.

"The number is more than just an expression of ability, it is more important than just that."However, Pogba will reach that level. He must be given time."

Juve have recovered from their early season struggles to move three points behind league leaders Inter, but Del Piero believes the quality of the league has declined in recent years and he cannot foresee rapid improvements."The teams are competitive among themselves which is something to be proud of," he continued.

"Serie A is different from a few seasons ago. The best players no longer play there, and they won't arrive either."However, we still have a competitive league."

Ancelotti better than Guardiola and Mourinho, says Lippi

    carlo-ancelotti-cropped_y6n39klw7wmw1xfzwr4ecd8q2.jpg

Former Italy coach Marcello Lippi feels that Carlo Ancelotti is arguably the best coach in the world today, ahead of other big names such as Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho.

Ancelotti, who has been out of work since he was sacked by Real Madrid in the summer, will replace Guardiola as the man in charge at Bayern Munich at the end of the 2015-16 campaign, following the latter's decision not to extend his stay with the reigning Bundesliga champions.

Lippi is confident his compatriot - who has won silverware at the likes of AC Milan, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Madrid in the past - will succeed at the Allianz Arena, despite the huge pressure.

"Ancelotti is the best coach in the world," Lippi told Il Messaggero. "He has won cups and domestic titles as a player and has won it all as a coach as well, both in Italy and abroad."His successful past helps him in his relationship with the players. He knows how to deal with big names and true champions."

The 56-year-old enjoyed Champions League success with Milan in 2002-03 and 2006-07, while also conquering Europe with Madrid in 2013-14.

Benteke has not been showing his full Liverpool potential - Klopp

    christianbenteke-cropped_1edpxx4pkh4dz1ck0lxeapi1j3.jpg

Jurgen Klopp feels Christian Benteke is ready to realise his potential at Liverpool after holding a frank discussion with the striker. The Belgium international scored in the Reds' 1-0 victory over Leicester City on Saturday – his fifth strike in 15 Premier League games this season.

Afterwards, Benteke revealed he and Klopp had a "man conversation" about his performances, which concluded with an agreement he would "run more" for the team.

And Klopp has now added his version of events, and he feels both parties are much clearer on what is expected following their chat."I spoke to Benteke about a few things," Klopp said in his pre-match media conference ahead of Wednesday's game with Sunderland.

"He knows what he has to do - that is for sure. It was not too easy to come in against Leicester, but the second half was better.

"He has such potential. He is not the same striker as Daniel [Sturridge] or Divock [Origi]. We have to use his natural skills and he has to try and be more involved in the game. Then we can make steps together. "It is not possible for a player to play his own style against that of the team. Of course, a striker has to make goals. That is what we need him for. We are clear and now we can work."

Liverpool have only scored three goals in their last five matches in all competitions, and Klopp is working hard to find a solution to his team's problems in front of goal.

He continued: "We have to think about how we can bring other players into positions to score goals."We are working on it. Scoring goals, you have to be more often in situations - you cannot wait for the one chance. You have to always be in position. That is what we try to do.

"We have our moments when we shoot where we have bad luck. For example, once or twice with Adam [Lallana] against Leicester."To be more dangerous from all positions is a big target for us."

Everton 3-4 Stoke City: Late Arnautovic penalty wins thriller

    2459132_heroa.jpg

Xherdan Shaqiri and Romelu Lukaku scored twice each but it was Stoke City who had the last laugh with a late, late penalty seeing them through to a 4-3 Premier League victory against Everton.

Shaqiri broke the deadlock after 15 minutes with a composed finish - his first for the club - before Lukaku struck back after picking up a delightful assist from James McCarthy, who soon had to be taken off on his first appearance after an injury lay-off.

Switzerland international Shaqiri restored Stoke's lead just before half-time with an incredible half-volley but Everton again recovered with Lukaku again the spearhead, chesting down a pass midway through the second period before slotting past Jack Butland.

The hosts snuck ahead for the first time when Gerard Deulofeu netted from close range but substitute Joselu capitalised on a moment of weakness from Tim Howard to level things up late in the game.

But just at the start of stoppage time, Marko Arnautovic converted from the spot to cap off an incredible match.

The visitors looked full of confidence following their win against Manchester United on Saturday and they could have gone a goal up within 60 seconds. Shaqiri was quickly into the thick of the action and, when he reached the byeline to set up Arnautovic on the edge of the area, Ramiro Funes Mori had to do well to block the Austria international's goalbound shot.

Former Inter star Shaqiri again looked dangerous shortly afterwards following a clever ball from Bojan Krkic but his low shot towards the far corner went just wide.

Mark Hughes's men finally grabbed the lead in the 16th minute after a superb team move. Bojan this time found Arnautovic inside the area, who immediately moved the ball onto Shaqiri, the Swiss coolly slotting home for his maiden Premier League goal.

The hosts did not need long to draw level, however, as Lukaku netted just six minutes after the opener. He produced a calm finish after a clever through-ball from McCarthy, who was forced off due to injury just a few minutes later.
Shaqiri was soon back running the show and he restored Stoke's lead in the closing minutes of the first half – although there was some debate as to whether he meant to shoot or cross. The 24-year-old beat the offside trap and stretched out his right boot to lift Bojan's fine pass over the helpless Howard, with Arnautovic scrambling to try and get into the area.

At the other end, Lukaku continued to cause the Stoke defence all kinds of problems and it was the Belgian who levelled the scoring again in the 64th minute. A brilliant long ball from Tom Cleverley this time set him away and he did well to chest it down and then beat Butland with a low, right-footed shot.

Substitute Steven Naismith was introduced as Everton sought a winner and he missed from close range, having been set up by Lukaku.

Deulofeu did find the net in the 71st minute to give Everton the lead for the first time after Ross Barkley had sent in a pinpoint cross from the left - the former Barcelona winger having no trouble tapping the ball home from close range.

In a pulsating finish, Stoke refused to give up and they were rewarded for their courageous display in the 80th minute when Howard failed to deal with Arnautovic's cross from the left and Joselu smashed home a shot from 10 yards out.

There was still time for more drama, though, as referee Mark Clattenburg awarded the visitors a penalty when Stones was adjudged to have fouled Arnautovic inside the area. The forward stepped up himself and fired the ball down the middle to seal an amazing win.

Watford 1-2 Tottenham: Late Son strike downs 10-man hosts

    2459652_heroa.jpg

An 89th-minute strike from substitute Son Heung-min secured Tottenham a dramatic 2-1 win over 10-man Watford at Vicarage Road.

The South Korea international pounced to net his second Premier League goal one minute from time to punish the hosts, who had Nathan Ake sent off for catching Erik Lamela with a high leg with the scores level just after the hour.

Tottenham took an early lead when Lamela capitalised on an error from Craig Cathcart to convert inside 11 minutes.

However, Odion Ighalo pulled his side level shortly before half-time with his 30th league goal of 2015 - more than any other player in England's top four tiers.

Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham had laboured for long periods, but were boosted when Ake - back in the side after sitting out the Boxing Day game against parent club Chelsea - was shown a red card in the second half.

The visitors dominated possession in the latter stages and finally broke through when Song flicked a clever finish with his trailing leg beyond Heurelho Gomes.

Pochettino rewarded Tom Carroll for his first Premier League goal in the 3-0 win over Norwich City with a starting berth, while he switched to a three-man defence with Kieran Trippier introduced as a wing-back for his top-flight Spurs debut.

Flores, meanwhile, made two changes at the back by introducing Ake and Ikechi Anya and Watford looked shaky defensively early on.

Gomes almost gifted his former club an opener in the 11th minute when he failed to claim Lamela's corner, but, fortunately for the Brazilian, Miguel Britos was on hand to head behind.

Spurs, though, were unforgiving when Watford made another mistake six minutes later.

Dele Alli caught Cathcart in possession on the halfway line and Lamela took full advantage, racing through and slotting the ball into the bottom-right corner.

Watford responded positively and Ighalo did his best to cause the Tottenham defence problems, but he failed to find the target with a near-post volley from Ake's cross with 25 minutes played.

But Ighalo did find the net for the sixth successive Premier League match before the interval.

The Nigerian showed strength to hold off the challenge of Eric Dier and bring down Troy Deeney's looping header before spinning past the defender and poking the ball under Hugo Lloris in the 41st minute.

Mousa Dembele had been struggling with a foot injury before kick-off and he was replaced before the interval.

Spurs continued to control possession after the restart and, with 58 minutes played, Harry Kane bundled an effort narrowly wide from Trippier's cross.

Tottenham's task was made easier five minutes later when Ake was shown a straight red card after he sent Lamela to ground with a high challenge.

Pochettino moved to introduce Son and the change paid dividends when the former Bayer Leverkusen man flicked Trippier's cross through the legs of Gomes in the 89th minute.

Claims for an offside against the South Korean in the build-up were ignored as Watford's five-game unbeaten streak came to an end.

Klopp: Liverpool searching for solution to lack of goals

    2459582_heroa.jpg

Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Liverpool are trying to find solutions to their goalscoring woes, with the Reds having only scored 21 in the Premier League thus far this season.

With Danny Ings out for the season, Divock Origi sidelined with a hamstring problem and Daniel Sturridge undergoing an intensive recovery process, Christian Benteke is currently the only fit striker at the club.

The Belgian has netted six goals in all competitions and is the Reds leading scorer, but the Merseysiders have scored more with him coming off the bench under Klopp than they've managed with him in the starting line-up.

The Reds boss is, however, looking beyond his frontmen to make the difference in the final third, especially given Liverpool's wealth of creative midfield players.

"It's always like this if you don’t have enough goals – you have to talk and think about how we can bring the other players into position to score goals," the German told reporters at Melwood. "We have such quality at headers that we could use this at set-plays, but we haven't often enough.
"We have our moments when we are shooting and we have a little bit of bad luck; for example the situations once or twice with Adam [Lallana] where he was a little bit unlucky when he went really close and could have scored a goal [against Leicester].

"But we are working on it. Always when it comes to scoring goals, you have to be in situations more often – you cannot say wait for the one chance and you will score it because it is not like this. You always have to be in the positions.

"That's what we are trying to do. We know about this [the need to score more goals], it's the truth, and to be more dangerous from more positions is a big target for us."

Pochettino confident about Tottenham title challenge

    mauricio-pochettino-cropped_4ikcfyvzq0wp1tnt1piy5cx5q.jpg

Mauricio Pochettino is confident Tottenham can mount a challenge for the Premier League title after going third with a last-gasp 2-1 win at Watford.

Son Heung-min's 89th-minute strike earned Spurs a hard-fought victory at Vicarage Road, where the hosts had Nathan Ake dismissed just after the hour mark.

Pochettino's side now sit just three points behind leaders Leicester City, who face Manchester City on Tuesday, and the Argentine believes Tottenham are capable of competing for a first top-flight title since 1961.

"In football a lot can happen. The most important thing is we believe, we have a strong squad to fight for [the title]," he told reporters after the match.

"The victory is very important for us, we worked hard to try and win and are happy because Watford are a difficult team and they beat Liverpool recently.

"The condition of the pitch made it difficult to play how we usually play but we showed great maturity. "We need to feel proud for the players, it was a great effort after only playing 48 hours ago."

The Argentine agreed with referee Anthony Talyor's decision to dismiss Ake for catching Erik Lamela with a high leg, adding: "Maybe orange or red, [it was] definitely more than a yellow."

Real Madrid to continue Copa expulsion appeal

    denis-cheryshev-cropped_1mke7kqv9onda18eh727vysaag.jpg

Real Madrid have confirmed they will take their appeal against their Copa del Rey expulsion to the Contentious-Administrative courts of Spain.

Following a meeting on Monday, the Administrative Tribunal for Sport upheld the decision to kick the 2013-14 winners out of the tournament.

The verdict was delivered following Madrid's oversight fielding Denis Cheryshev, who should have been serving a suspension, against Cadiz in the round of 32.

Madrid president Florentino Perez confirmed earlier this month that they would continue their fight in the ordinary courts should the decision go against them, and the club have since released a statement to affirm their intentions.

"The club respects but does not agree with the decision of the tribunal and therefore communicates the decision to puruse the Contentious-Administrative route, regardless of other legal options which are being studied," a statement from the club read.

The expulsion is another incident which has caused the club to lose faith in coach Rafael Benitez, with the Spaniard under increasing scrutiny following his move to the Bernabeu in the summer.

Arsenal 2-0 Bournemouth: Magic Ozil takes Wenger's men to summit

    2460312_heroa.jpg

A sublime display from Mesut Ozil was the key for Arsenal as they overcame Bournemouth 2-0, assuring the top spot in the Premier League for at least 24 hours.

Arsene Wenger's side had passed up the chance to claim top spot when Southampton thrashed them 4-0 on Saturday and they were tentative during the early exchanges this time around at Emirates Stadium. But recalled centre-back Gabriel scored his first Arsenal goal to settle the nerves after 27 minutes.

That came from an Ozil corner, the playmaker's 16th assist in the Premier League this term, and he soon took his club goal tally to five for the season as well with a wonderfully taken second after the hour.

The home side could not add further gloss to a scoreline that ended Bournemouth’s impressive six-match unbeaten run but, unless Leicester City beat Manchester City on Tuesday night, Arsenal will lead the way at the mid point of a thrillingly unpredictable title race.

There was also reason to celebrate for Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech, as the 2-0 scoreline ensured him of a record-breaking 170th Premier League clean sheet - taking the landmark outright from David James.

Wenger made four changes to the side beaten heavily at Southampton as Gabriel, Kieran Gibbs, Calum Chambers and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain earned starts.Josh King returned from a hamstring injury to lead the Bournemouth attack, while Marc Pugh was preferred to Junior Stanislas on the left.

Eddie Howe's team made a confident start, with Charlie Daniels' low cross scrambled out of the Arsenal goalmouth and Gabriel blocking a volley from Harry Arter.

Arsenal struggled for clear sights of goal - Theo Walcott failing to make a good connection with Ozil’s chipped pass - until Bournemouth gifted them the opener.
Goalkeeper Artur Boruc remained rooted to his line and Gabriel charged unmarked on to an in-swinging Ozil corner to head home.

Gabriel was involved again as the hosts comically missed out on a second - the Brazilian glancing Ozil's delivery against the far post before the rebound struck centre-back partner Per Mertesacker in the face and dropped agonisingly wide.

Boruc saved well from Walcott in the 34th minute, with Ozil once again the provider as the panic caused by the former Real Madrid man's set-pieces spread to Bournemouth's general play.Stanislas replaced Pugh at the break and Gabriel was required back in his own penalty area to thwart King on the counter-attack.Bournemouth looked to be growing in confidence before Ozil turned from provider to goalscorer with 63 minutes played.

The German glided infield from the right and picked out Olivier Giroud - the striker flicking a return pass impeccably into his path before Ozil's cool, side-footed finish left Boruc with no chance.

Walcott narrowly failed to slide home Hector Bellerin's cross before Boruc clumsily spilt a Giroud shot, with Bournemouth’s task increasingly appearing to be one of damage limitation.

Giroud was off target from close range, Oxlade-Chamberlain saw a shot deflected against the post and King limped out of the action as Bouremouth closed 2015 three points above the relegation zone .

It is a standing they would no doubt be delighted to maintain until next May, when Ozil and Arsenal hope to be lifting silverware.
