I'm working harder, but playing worse than ever - Martinez

    jacksonmartinez-cropped_26q8yr7ybjjn1ta9rv24zt2qk.jpg

Atletico Madrid striker Jackson Martinez says he is working harder than ever - but playing some of the worst football in his career.

Martinez was a €35 million signing from Porto in the summer after spending three seasons with the Portuguese club.

The 29-year-old has failed to reach the same heights he achieved with Porto, scoring just twice in La Liga so far this season.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone has backed his striker to find the net, but Martinez is worried with his output.

"I am training like never before, yet playing as bad as ever," the Colombian striker ahead of the club's league clash with Las Palmas.

Atletico are top of the league after 19 games, two points ahead of Barcelona who have a game in hand.

Debuchy: I have to leave Arsenal in January

    mathieu-debuchy-arsenal_1duyun0z9p5zz1w5c7segwnqok.jpg

Out-of-favour Arsenal defender Mathieu Debuchy says he needs to leave the club during the current transfer window amid interest from Aston Villa and Bayer Leverkusen.

The France international has fallen down the pecking order at the Emirates Stadium, having lost his place to Hector Bellerin following a long-term shoulder injury sustained last season.

The former Newcastle full-back has made just seven appearances in all competitions this term and says a move away, be it a loan or a permanent transfer, is needed ahead of the European Championship this year.

Asked by L'Equipe about interest from rock-bottom Villa, Debuchy said: "It's true, they are among the teams seeking me. I'm currently studying everything but it's not a possibility I have excluded."Whatever happens, even if it is to return [to Arsenal] this summer and then start again, I have to go this winter. I can not stay at Arsenal.

"[Villa's position] makes you think. This is also why I take my time before deciding. On the other hand, it can also be a great challenge. While they are currently in difficulty, Aston Villa is one of the major English clubs. This is also why I do not rule out this possibility."[The interest from Leverkusen] is true and it may interest me too. The most important thing is to play in an attractive league."

Debuchy faces competition from Bacary Sagna and Christophe Jallet at right-back in France's squad for the Euros in June and July, the 30-year-old having struggled to feature regularly during friendlies following the World Cup in 2014.

"As the weeks go by, we get closer to the Euros. I have to play to try to return as soon as March for the Netherlands and Russia friendlies," he added."I clearly lost six months. I would have preferred to leave last summer but the coach [Wenger] told me that I would have my chance. Ultimately, it was not the case.

"I do not know who is responsible. Last year I got injured, I've been away a long time and Bellerin had some good matches. This summer, I had a good preparation and I was able to resume the season as the regular but the coach decided otherwise."That's competition, do not worry. This is football. But it was very hard, I went through difficult times. This is the first time I find myself in this situation. Playing a match every two months - that's not possible.

"I do not know in what condition I am. In my position, you must defend and attack. If you played me tomorrow, I do not know if I could last the whole game. That's why I can not stay in this situation."

:love::love:De Gea dismisses Real Madrid talk: I want to become a Man Utd legend like Schmeichel

    2534602_heroa.jpg

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has dismissed talk of a move to Real Madrid and says he wants to become a club legend like Peter Schmeichel.

The Spain international came close to a move to the Bernabeu in the summer before the proposed deal fell through, with De Gea subsequently signing a new deal at Old Trafford.

Madrid were hit with a transfer ban last week, which bans them from signing players in the summer and next January, leading to reports they could move for De Gea in January before the suspension begins.

However, De Gea is adamant he no longer has any desire to leave the club and says he is focused on emulating the achievements of Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar.

"I'm happy, I'm enjoying it and I believe in the team," De Gea told Sky Sports.

"[Schmeichel and Van Der Sar] were the greatest goalkeepers in the Premier League, they are legends for this club and that is what I want.

"I train every day to be the best goalkeeper in the world, that is my aim. I'm not sure who the best is now, but it's what I want. Also, to win trophies for Manchester United."

De Gea also recalled the last time he faced Liverpool back in September, when he received a rapturous reception from fans on his return to the side after signing a new contract, following interest from Real Madrid.

"I cannot describe how I felt in that moment," he added.

"In another country, at another club, the fans would not be the same as at Manchester United. They are some of the best in the world, it was unbelievable."

Borussia Monchengladbach open to Xhaka sale

    only-germany-granit-xhaka-borussia-monchengladbach_3ableecc0ybw1skomyfdufck9.jpg

Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl says the club will be forced to consider any sizeable bids for highly-rated midfielder Granit Xhaka.

The Switzerland international has been linked with the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool recently, having become a key part of Gladbach's plans since arriving from Basel in 2012.

Xhaka was also talked of as a possible long-term replacement for Bastian Schweinsteiger following his exit from Bayern Munich and was backed by former Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld to succeed at the Allianz Arena.

The 23-year-old agreed a new four-and-a-half-year deal in February 2015 but Eberl says the club could be tempted to sell for the right price.

"It depends a bit on our own sporting success, it depends on Granit's own performances and of course it depends on the figures," he told WDR2.

"If they reach a certain level, then you could start to get dizzy. There are always situations in which every club would have to make considerations."It is all in our own hands. As things stand, we are happy to have him with us and hopefully he will stay with us for a long time."

Xhaka has made 23 appearances in all competitions this term, with fourth-placed Gladbach returning to Bundesliga action against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

Rodgers: I've had offers from home and abroad but won't rush return

    candidates-to-replace-gary-neville-on-mnf-brendan-rodgers_hwoh8f0fmxc11jbya5y8bl1fm.jpg

Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says he has had offers from around the world to return to management but insists he will not rush a decision on his next club.

The ex-Swansea City and Watford boss left Anfield in October following a mixed start to the Premier League season and has since been linked with jobs in Qatar, as well as a return to the Liberty Stadium.

Rodgers - who led Liverpool to the brink of the title in 2013-14 - says he would consider a job either at home or abroad provided the opportunity is right.

"I've been spending time with the family, travelling. It's so intense as a manager but I wanted to make sure I take a bit of time then look to the next challenge," he told Sky's Goals on Sunday."Hopefully, come the summer, I can get back in.

"It's something I'd consider, I've had offers since I've been out both abroad and at home but I want to take the time to recover and ensure my motivation is as renewed as it can be.

"[I would go] wherever as long as it's exciting and the club want to work with me and work together. Wherever you go, you have to go win. Whatever country you're in, you have to want to be in with a chance of winning."Going close with Liverpool is something that really drives you."

Rodgers was also quizzed on the recent decision of Gary Neville to halt his work as a television pundit and take up a coaching role at Valencia in La Liga.

"I was surprised but he's been so brave in doing it," the Northern Irishman added. "To jump out of the studio - I know he coaches with England - but to be a number one is different.

"I'm sure he's found that already but it's a brave step and fair play to him. The communication aspect is maybe not easy for him but he's gone to a fantastic club and has good people around him.

"Whatever he does next, he'll be better for having been a number one."

    Barcelona wanted Aguero before Suarez

    lionel-messi-barcelona-sergio-aguero-manchester-city-champions-league-03122014_oz5hjuvhn9to128g5r5p7sh3h.jpg

Barcelona wanted to sign Sergio Aguero ahead of Luis Suarez, according to the club's former sporting director Andoni Zubizarretta.

Suarez moved to Camp Nou from Liverpool in July 2014, but Aguero was top of the Catalans' shopping list before Manchester City rejected their approach.

Zubizarretta told Marca: "We had some options. The first was not Suarez. He knows it. In winter we considered the signing of Aguero. That did not work out.

"In this situation, there was no doubt: Luis Suarez was our only goal."

Suarez's move to Barca was complicated by the four-month suspension he received for biting Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay's World Cup clash against Italy.

However, Zubizarreta believes the incident was a blessing in disguise as rivals for his signature hesitated in making a move for the striker.

"During the negotiation process the incident with Chiellini occurred," he added.

"The issue created a seed of doubt for other clubs who wanted him. They questioned his character. I thought it was the perfect time to accelerate the process of signing him.

"I liked everything about him: he was not static, knew his way around the outside of the box and gave us a profile which we did not have.

"From the outset his willingness to sign for Barca was huge."

Henry was my childhood hero - Lewandowski

    1965842_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has cited Arsenal legend Thierry Henry as his childhood hero, saying he has always been impressed by the Frenchman.

The 27-year-old, who has been in sensational goalscoring form this season, recently finished fourth in the Ballon d'Or behind eventual winner Lionel Messi, runner-up Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar in third place.

And Lewandowski has spoken of his admiration for former Gunners striker Henry, who holds the record of being the club's all-time record goalscorer with 228 goals in 377 appearances.

He told Telefoot: "I've always tried to follow the example of Henry, my childhood hero. His technique, his celebrity, he has always impressed me."

The Poland international played a pivotal role in his country's qualification through to Euro 2016 in France this summer, finishing top goalscorer with 13 goals - and he insists they will fear no team.

"Winning the Euros? Perhaps it's too early," he continued. "But our team doesn't fear anyone. It will be a great event. I hope Poland will be the surprise."

Lewandowski 'flattered' by PSG talk, but happy at Bayern

    robertlewandowski-cropped_1b062asy0ypp41tvcs325ohk1k.jpg

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski admits it is "flattering" to be linked with Paris Saint-Germain, but insists he is fully focused on his work with the Bundesliga side.

With the Ligue 1 side set to lose star man Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the end of the season, the 27-year-old has been talked up as a potential replacement.

Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge also put pressure on his position by stating the clubs' interest in Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain, yet he played down rumours of a move.

He told Telefoot: "It's very flattering to see PSG officials talk about me but I'm concentrated on my work here at Bayern."

The Poland international finished fourth in the Ballon d'Or for last year, behind winner Lionel Messi, runner-up Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar after an impressive 2015 for club and country.

Yet Lewandowski, who helped Poland to Euro 2016 with a second-place finish in Group D while winning the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal with Bayern, says he is "not passionate" about the award.

He added: "I'm happy to be in that group of players. I've improved since I joined Bayern.

"But I can confess that I'm not passionate about the Ballon d'Or."

Udinese 0-4 Juventus: Two-goal Dybala stars in Bianconeri romp

    2542832_heroa.jpg

Paulo Dybala was the star of the show as his two goals helped fire Juventus to an impressive 4-0 win over Udinese on Sunday.

Udinese had shocked the Serie A champions 1-0 in August's reverse fixture and were hoping for a repeat in Sunday's encounter, which marked the first since renovation work was completed at their Stadio Friuli stadium.

But from the moment Dybala scored with a 15th-minute free-kick, there was only ever going to be one winner.

Sami Khedira scored for the second match running with a simple header before Danilo was sent off for a last-man challenge on Mario Mandzukic, allowing Dybala to make it 3-0 from the penalty spot. It was his 11th league goal of the season.

A fine individual goal from Alex Sandro made it 4-0 before the end of the opening period and, although they took their foot off the gas somewhat after the interval, Juve easily racked up a 10th consecutive Serie A win to pull away from Inter in second place and keep the heat on league leaders Napoli.Keen to silence a loud, sold-out home crowd, Juve tested the water when Mandzukic failed to make clean contact with an acrobatic effort from Giorgio Chiellini's knock down.

And the visitors were in front in the 15th minute thanks to Dybala's perfectly executed free-kick into the bottom left-hand corner that left Orestis Karnezis flat-footed.

Just three minutes later, a corner was only part-cleared and Dybala headed across the face of goal, where the unmarked Khedira nodded into the open net.Udinese began to completely unravel and Danilo was given his marching orders for chopping down Mandzukic when one-on-one with Karnezis and Dybala coolly slotted the resulting penalty into the bottom left-hand corner.

The pick of the goals came three minutes before the break as left-back Alex Sandro cut in on his right foot and curled a brilliant effort into the far corner.

Karnezis made fine stops from Khedira and Kwadwo Asamoah to keep it at 4-0 before the break, and Dybala was let down by a rare poor first touch when picked out by Mandzukic just shy of the hour mark. The hosts had little to cheer, but veteran Antonio Di Natale was afforded a warm round of applause - including from several visiting players - when replaced by Duvan Zapata in what is likely to be his last game against Juve.

With the game won, Juve opted to take off Dybala and his replacement Alvaro Morata forced Karnezis into a smart stop low to his left. Udinese almost grabbed a consolation when Francesco Lodi's free-kick was brilliantly tipped onto the post by Gianluigi Buffon.

But Juve were largely comfortable in the closing stages and Massimiliano Allegri's men can now prepare for a tricky week that seems them visit Lazio in the Coppa Italia before hosting Roma in Serie A.

:love:Liverpool 0-1 Manchester United: Record-breaking Rooney stuns Anfield

    2543892_heroa.jpg

Wayne Rooney scored with Manchester United's only shot on target as a wasteful Liverpool were stunned at Anfield.

In a largely tepid contest lacking quality on both sides, Rooney reacted quickest when Marouane Fellaini's header rattled the crossbar - ensuring United a fourth consecutive victory over the Merseyside outfit.

Liverpool - still in flux under Klopp and struggling for consistency - had the better of the first-half chances but were made to rue missed opportunities from the likes of Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson.

Louis van Gaal's men also looked to have reverted to their goal-shy ways of recent weeks, showing little sign of the renewed attacking vigour on show during Tuesday's 3-3 draw at Newcastle United.

However, when Fellaini climbed highest to head a Juan Mata cross against Simon Mignolet's crossbar, Rooney made the most of sloppy Liverpool defending to hammer in the winner and maintain his goalscoring streak.

After a season of criticism for the United skipper, Rooney has now scored five goals in his last four outings, leaving Klopp and his Liverpool side to lament their lack of killer instinct.

While United were unchanged from Tuesday's draw on Tyneside, Liverpool brought in Lucas Leiva for Jordon Ibe following their 3-3 draw against Arsenal.

And, amid a frenetic start, the Brazilian's clever pass allowed Lallana a header on target before Roberto Firmino sent the rebound wide following a smart stop from David de Gea.

In a traditionally fiery encounter, tempers flared just 15 minutes in when Fellaini and Lucas squared up, but slack play and misplaced passes continued to hamper both sides inside the opening half-hour.

Henderson fired wide after neat interplay involving Lucas and Firmino, with the latter seeing penalty appeals turned down when he went down under minimal contact from Anthony Martial.

United's difficult half ended with Ashley Young limping off - the full-back replaced by Cameron Borthwick-Jackson three minutes before the break.

Liverpool remained the more vibrant in possession but saw Rooney burst clear on goal after hesitation from Nathaniel Clyne, only for another attack to predictably peter out.

At the other end, De Gea saved Emre Can's low drive with his legs as chances began to flow, Martial the next to go close when he dragged a shot wide before the hour mark.

In the final half-hour, Henderson side-footed a shot straight at De Gea from the edge of the area, while the Spaniard was called on again to deny Can and Firmino in quick succession.

Van Gaal introduced Memphis Depay and Mata - last season's two-goal hero in this fixture - with the Spaniard's delivery leading to the game's defining moment 12 minutes from time.

Fellaini, whose contribution had been limited, showed his aerial threat, with Rooney reacting smartly to beat Mignolet and maintain United's upturn in fortunes despite a relatively mediocre display.

    Wenger: Ozil injury very short-term

    2473032_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger insists that the foot injury that ruled Mesut Ozil out of Arsenal's clash with Stoke City on Sunday is "very short-term".

The Germany international did not travel with the squad for the fixture against Mark Hughes' side at the Britannia, prompting concerns over his fitness.

However, Wenger has now revealed that Ozil is expected to recover from the problem quickly, and he is expected to be back in time for next weekend's London derby against embattled champions Chelsea.

"Mesut has a problem with his foot, an inflammation, but it's very short term - very short term," he told Sky Sports.

    "He'll be back next week."

Alexis Sanchez was also left out of Wenger's team, not even making the bench, and the Frenchman says he did not dare rush the Chile international back and risk a lengthy lay-off.

“Because he was at 95 percent there, but with a muscular problem I didn’t want to take a gamble because if he has a setback now it’s three months," he said when quizzed about why he did not select the former Barcelona attacker.

"I think he’s a few days away so it was not worth the gamble.”

Liverpool kiss Champions League hopes goodbye

Manchester United had just one shot on target but that was all they needed on an ice-cold Sunday afternoon at Anfield.

It's yet another game in which Liverpool have been floored by a set-piece, with Wayne Rooney's winner coming from a corner routine following hesitance in the hosts defence.

No side in the Premier League have conceded more goals from corners, with Jurgen Klopp referencing that weakness weekly, and will no doubt be hugely frustrated after dominating long period of the game.
David de Gea was superb for United, while Liverpool - despite spending in excess of £180 million on attacking players in the past two summers - did not have enough of a threat in the final third.

The hosts were the better side for the bulk of the encounter, but United had the edge in both boxes when it mattered most.

A top-four place is probably too much to ask from the Anfield side, who'll view the cup competitions as their best chance of success this season.
