Luis Enrique equals Guardiola's Barcelona record of 28 games unbeaten

    2649312_heroa.jpg

Luis Enrique's Barcelona have equalled a club record set by Pep Guardiola as Sunday's victory over Levante made it 28 games unbeaten for the Catalans.

The Bayern Munich boss, who joins Manchester City in the summer, had made history back in the 2010-11 season as his Barca side went almost 30 matches without losing before finally coming unstuck against Real Betis in the Copa del Rey in January 2011.

And the record has now been equalled by Enrique, who took charge of his 100th match as head coach of the Champions League holders in Sunday's meeting with Levante, with a David Navarro own goal and Luis Suarez strike sealing a 2-0 win for the Catalans.

Barca were last beaten back in October, as Sevilla claimed a 2-1 win courtesy of goals from Michael Krohn-Dehli and Vicente Iborra, with Enrique having won an incredible 80 of his 100 games in charge of the Spanish giants.

And the former midfielder, who has guided his side to 10 victories in a row, will now break Guardiola's record should his side avoid defeat in Wednesday's Copa del Rey semi-final meeting with struggling Valencia.

Verona 3-3 Inter: Spoils shared as Nerazzurri slump continues

    2649392_heroa.jpg

Mauro Icardi and Ivan Perisic completed a rousing Inter comeback to earn a point in a thrilling 3-3 draw at rock-bottom Verona on Sunday.

Verona's last victory against Inter came back in 1992 and that run looked set to be extended when Jeison Murillo headed the visitors into an early lead at Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi.

But the hosts, who earned a first win of a miserable Serie A season against Atalanta in midweek, quickly turned the match on its head with Filip Helander and Eros Pisano heading home Luca Marrone set-pieces.

And it got better for Verona after the break when more Inter woe at set-pieces saw Artur Ionita convert another Marrone corner.

However, Perisic - on as a half-time substitute - then set up Icardi's for his 10th league goal of the campaign and provider turned goalscorer when the winger swept home the equaliser in the 78th minute.

Despite their rousing comeback Roberto Mancini has now seen Inter win just once in six league matches as they missed the chance to replace Fiorentina in the top three, while Verona sit nine points adrift of safety.

Inter - who had Mancini back on the sidelines following a one-match ban - controlled the opening exchanges with Rodrigo Palacio and Marcelo Brozovic both going close.

The visitors were in front by the ninth minute, though, as Murillo leapt highest to head Brozovic's corner into the bottom right-hand corner.

But Inter were stunned by two Verona goals in the space of four minutes soon after their opener.

First Helander levelled with a powerful header from Marrone's corner over a helpless Samir Handanovic and Inter were caught out by another set-piece when Marrone's free-kick from the right was planted into the bottom corner by the unmarked Pisano.

Brozovic went close to an equaliser with a spectacular acrobatic volley from the edge of the box that sliced wide of the post, while Icardi failed to control Palacio's cross when wide open in the area.

Inter were wasteful with their final delivery at the start of the second half and they were made to pay as Marrone claimed a third assist of the afternoon when Ionita timed his run brilliantly to head into the left-hand corner.

It was game on by the hour, though, as half-time substitute Perisic's excellent low ball from the left was clipped home by Icardi.

Palacio was again denied by Gollini, but Verona's resistance was broken with 12 minutes remaining as Eder's excellent low delivery from the right was tapped in by Perisic at the back post.

In a frantic ending Gilberto Junior hit the outside of the post for Verona and Juan Gomez saw an audacious long-range chip go just wide, while at the other end an unmarked Icardi wastefully headed wide from eight yards as the sides were forced to settle for a point apiece.

:cool:100 games, 80 wins: Luis Enrique adds brawn to brilliance as Barca pass another title test

    2648822_heroa.jpg

Luis Enrique's Barcelona keep on winning. The 45-year-old oversaw his 100th game as Blaugrana boss on Sunday and marked the milestone with yet another victory. That's 80 in total now in his time at the Catalan club - and this one was very much in his own image.

It wasn't classic Barca by any means. The Catalans came flying out of the blocks and had the ball in the net after just two minutes through Lionel Messi, only to see that strike incorrectly ruled out for offside. Had it been allowed, the course of the match may have been different altogether.

But Barcelona rarely relish early kick-offs and even though they did eventually take the lead with a somewhat fortuitous own-goal when a cross deflected in off David Navarro, it was a poor performance from the champions in the first 45 minutes. In the windy conditions, Luis Enrique's men managed only one other shot on target - and Levante had hit the post before the break as well.

The second half was little better. Levante left men forward and did not allow Barca to have things their own way. The visitors improved when Sergio Busquets came on to replace Ivan Rakitic, but they only wrapped up the win in added time as Luis Suarez scored finished off a counter-attacking move as Levante looked for an equaliser and left a huge hole at the back.

    M7IcWrD.png

The nature of the win will not bother Luis Enrique at all, however. The Asturian coach has now won 80 of his first 100 games in charge at the Catalan club (compared to Pep Guardiola's 71 in his first 100) and he also has five trophies to his name so far including last season's treble triumph.

And after claiming the Champions League in Berlin to complete the treble last June, Luis Enrique said: "We have played 60 games, won 50, drawn four and lost six. Those are the best numbers of any season in the history of the club."
He was right. And his numbers up until now remain the best in the history of the club, even if Guardiola claimed six out of six trophies in his first 18 months in charge - one more than his former Barca and Spain team-mate.

Incidentally, Luis Enrique equalled Pep's record of 28 games unbeaten on Sunday and can now surpass that mark in the Copa del Rey away to Valencia on Wednesday.

"The wind makes things difficult for those who want to play football and it made life complicated for us all," the Barca boss said afterwards. "But given the circumstances, the team did all that was necessary. I am happy to close out the result."

Levante are currently bottom of the Primera Division, but a trip to the Ciutat de Valencia is always considered to be a tough test for Barca due to the poor playing surface and the windy conditions.

So it is another obstacle overcome by the league leaders, who are three points clear of second-placed Atletico with a game in hand over Diego Simeone's side, with Real Madrid four further back ahead of their trip to Granada later on Sunday.

"It wasn't a spectacular game, but they are three very valuable points," Andres Iniesta said afterwards. "We give a lot of importance to not dropping points."

Barca still have to travel to Villarreal, Real Sociedad and Deportivo La Coruna in La Liga, while they also face a Clasico clash at home to Real Madrid in April and there is still work to be done if they are to claim a second successive league title under Luis Enrique.

But the Asturian has made Barca much more resilient than before and even when they are not playing well (like against Levante), they are able to grind out results in a way they were unable to in the past.

Sunday's success was as much about brawn than it was about brilliance, but that is exactly what Luis Enrique has brought to the table with the team's fantastic forward line, the added aggression of Rakitic in midfield and more options tactically all over the pitch.

It may not always be beautiful, but it's incredibly effective. It's why Barca have won 80 of Luis Enrique's first 100 games - and it's why the Catalans remain the team to beat both at home and in Europe.

Bournemouth 0-2 Arsenal: Quick-fire Ozil & Oxlade-Chamberlain double gives Gunners victory

    2649812_heroa.jpg

Goals from Mesut Ozil and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain gave Arsenal a routine 2-0 victory over a dogged Bournemouth side on Sunday.

The Gunners came into the game on the back of four league matches without a win and having failed to score in their last three, but two goals in quick succession midway through the first half at Vitality Stadium ended that run.

Mesut Ozil netted the opener with a powerful finish, before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain swiftly doubled the lead to score his first Premier League goal away from Emirates Stadium.

The victory, which never looked in doubt after the rapid double, moves Arsenal level on points with Tottenham in second and to within five of leaders Leicester City, whom the Gunners host in a crunch title clash next Sunday.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, suffer a first defeat in four games and remain five points clear of the relegation zone in 15th position.

Eddie Howe's men were unchanged, while Arsenal brought in Oxlade-Chamberlain for Joel Campbell in their solitary switch.

The early stages saw Mathieu Flamini only booked for a heavy challenge on Dan Gosling which could have been punished more severely, while Alexis Sanchez lashed a shot over from a tight angle after latching on to Aaron Ramsey's bouncing pass.

It was the match's first shot on target which produced a goal from Ozil on 23 minutes. A deep cross from Ramsey was headed down by Olivier Giroud and the Germany international impressively arrowed a right-footed shot into the roof of the net.

Within 88 seconds, the lead was doubled. A poor piece of defending saw Steve Cook give away possession and Ramsey took advantage to slip a pass to Oxlade-Chamberlain, who directed an excellent finish in off the far post.

Bournemouth almost got back into the game when Harry Arter beat two men and unleashed an impressive dipping strike that was kept out by an acrobatic Petr Cech save.

Arsenal's Nacho Monreal was denied a penalty by referee Kevin Friend after going down under Matt Ritchie's challenge as the Gunners went into the break with a strong lead.

Both sides exchanged decent chances early in the second half, with Adam Smith forcing his way past Laurent Koscielny before firing a shot against the side netting for the hosts.

A few moments later, Sanchez collected a pass from Ozil at the other end and had a shot beaten away by Artur Boruc, with Arsenal settling for a comfortable two-goal victory.

AC Milan 1-1 Udinese: Niang strike cancels out Armero opener

    2650482_heroa.jpg

AC Milan's recent revival was stunted as M'Baye Niang found the back of the net for the third Serie A outing in succession to salvage a 1-1 draw with Udinese at San Siro.

Niang, who achieved the scoring feat for the first time in his career in Italy, fired home in the third minute of the second half to earn Milan a point after Pablo Armero had handed the visitors the lead against his former club early on.

The Rossoneri went into the game looking to extend a three-match winning run and had numerous chances in front of goal, but Udinese keeper Orestis Karnezis was in fine form on a sodden and blustery afternoon and Andrea Bertolacci cannoned an effort against the crossbar in the dying moments.

The visitors were not outplayed by Sinisa Mihajlovic's side, however, and could well have recorded a first victory in six matches had Francesco Lodi not fluffed a golden chance a matter of seconds before Niang's equaliser.

During a slovenly start to proceedings, Zdravko Kuzmanovic dragged an early shot wide for Udinese before the visitors took the lead in the 17th minute.

Gianluigi Donnarumma produced a terrific double save to deny Cyril Thereau and Kuzmanovic but the Milan goalkeeper's heroics came to nothing, as Armero bundled home while the hosts' defence stood motionless.

Conceding for the first time in more than five hours of action seemed to spark Milan into life and Carlos Bacca thought he had levelled the game in the 32nd minute.

However, the Colombian saw his close-range header correctly disallowed for offside and, for all their domination of possession for the remainder of the first period, the Rossoneri could only fashion one shot on target before the break.Karnezis was barely tested by Riccardo Montolivo's 25-yard effort and Milan still trailed at half-time.

Mihajlovic threw on Mario Balotelli for the second half in an effort to change the game and the forward should have done better than curl wide from 15 yards with his first touch less than a minute after the restart, and Lodi side-footed straight at Donnarumma as Udinese failed to capitalise.

The breakneck speed of the second period was unrelenting, and Milan cantered down the other end to equalise. Bacca's well-weighted pass played in Niang who had time to pick his spot across Karnezis and find the bottom, left-hand corner.
Karnezis produced a sensational save to deny Bacca, keeping out the Colombian's point-blank header after Niang flicked on a free-kick.

Balotelli's low free-kick was then comfortably saved by Karnezis, Bertolacci thrashed a shot against the frame of the goal - which almost rebounded into the net - and Montolivo stung the Greek goalkeeper's palms once more but, for all their huff and puff, Milan could not find a winner.

Frosinone 0-2 Juventus: Cuadrado & Dybala seal three points for Bianconeri

    2650942_heroa.jpg

Juventus extended their winning streak in Serie A to 14 games with a hard-fought 2-0 victory at Frosinone that keeps them within two points of leaders Napoli.

Massimiliano Allegri's side were frustrated for much of the afternoon at Stadio Comunale Matusa before Juan Cuadrado and Paulo Dybala secured all three points with late goals. The visitors enjoyed the better of a quiet first half with Stefano Sturaro, Dybala and Alvaro Morata wasting openings.

Daniel Ciofani blazed Frosinone's only chance of the first half over as the hosts frustrated the in-form champions, and that pattern continued after the restart with nine outfield players often sitting behind the ball to frustrate Juve.

But eventually Juve were rewarded for their patience 17 minutes from time, when Cuadrado ghosted in at the back post to fire low past Nicola Leali.

Dybala then made sure of the points in injury time with a clinical finish from Morata's pass as Juve kept pace with Napoli, who beat Carpi 1-0 at Stadio San Paolo, ahead of next Saturday's clash of the top two in Turin.

Juve delivered an early warning after five minutes as Sturaro went agonisingly close to converting Alex Sandro's left-wing cross, the midfielder given the freedom of the penalty area after a flowing move led by Cuadrado and Paul Pogba.

Frosinone were not fazed by that scare, though, and should have taken the lead after 13 minutes as Ciofani fired just over from Leonardo Blanchard's pinpoint pass.Chances were at a premium after the lively start, but the visitors finished the half strongly with Sturaro, Dybala and Morata all going close.

Shortly after the half hour, a loose ball dropped to Sturaro 20 yards from goal, but his low shot was well parried by Leali before Dybala blasted the rebound over from six yards.

Morata - who had been relatively anonymous in the opening 45 minutes - then wasted a glorious opening just before the break after bustling his way through, Leali on hand to make a crucial save.

Juve started the second half with renewed vigour and saw Cuadrado test Leali with a 25-yard drive, before Pogba and Claudio Marchisio both snatched at chances just before the hour, the former mistiming his leap to meet Cuadrado's dangerous delivery.

Dybala and Pogba were again wasteful as Juve's pressure appeared unlikely to produce the goal they needed, but a break from Alex Sandro with 17 minutes left proved decisive.

Having been released by Pogba, the Brazilian full-back drilled a low cross to the back post where Cuadrado was on hand to break the deadlock.

And Dybala's well-taken 13th Serie A goal of the season then completed Juve's record-breaking victory, with the champions surpassing their previous best of 13 successive league wins.

:love:Chelsea 1-1 Man Utd: Late Costa strike earns champions deserved draw

    2651692_heroa.jpg

Diego Costa snatched an injury-time equaliser to secure Chelsea a 1-1 draw against Manchester United and preserve the Premier League champions' unbeaten run under Guus Hiddink.

Louis van Gaal described United's performances against Derby County and Stoke City as "sparkling" and his side began Sunday's game in dominant fashion at Stamford Bridge, though chances were few and far between in the first half.

Kurt Zouma was carried off on a stretcher shortly after half-time with what looked to be a serious injury to his right knee and Jesse Lingard turned home in fine style just two minutes later to put the visitors ahead.

David de Gea made a handful of superb saves to keep Chelsea at bay in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford and he frustrated Hiddink's side again, making terrific stops against Branislav Ivanovic and Cesc Fabregas in particular.

As a first Premier League win in seven over the champions for United neared, Costa pounced in the dying minutes to preserve Chelsea's unbeaten run since Jose Mourinho was sacked, which now stands at 11 games in all competitions.

United controlled the opening quarter, Michael Carrick drawing a low stop from Courtois before the Belgian superbly clawed away Anthony Martial's effort after cutting into the left channel.

The visitors kept up their pressure as Chelsea struggled to gain a foothold in possession, though De Gea had to react smartly to catch Nemanja Matic's glancing header from Willian's delivery.

Costa placed a low shot narrowly wide of the far post as Hiddink's side suddenly began to look a real threat, with Oscar then blazing over the bar from close range after being teed up by Cesar Azpilicueta.

Wayne Rooney almost turned home Matteo Darmian's drilled cross but John Terry had shouts for a penalty waved away in the final minute of the half as his shot on the turn took a slight deflection off Daley Blind's raised arm.

Rooney drew a strong save from Courtois and Martial dragged a shot narrowly wide as United began the second half back on the front foot, with the Belgian again at full stretch to keep out Lingard's curling effort.

Hiddink introduced Eden Hazard from the bench but was forced into a second substitution within a minute after Zouma had to be carried off on a stretcher after jarring his right leg when landing awkwardly near the centre circle.

Chelsea's defence was slow to settle after Gary Cahill's introduction and Lingard capitalised superbly to put United ahead, controlling Cameron Borthwick-Jackson's low cross from the left and firing into Courtois' top-left corner on the turn.

De Gea reacted brilliantly to tip Ivanovic's volley over the bar as Chelsea sought an immediate response, and the Spain international denied compatriot Fabregas with another fine save to keep the midfielder's effort out of the top corner.

United's resistance was finally worn down in the first minute of stoppage time, however, as Costa capitalised on Blind's slip to finish at the second time of asking and preserve Hiddink's unbeaten run.

Aguero to sign Manchester City contract extension

    2644752_heroa.jpg

Sergio Aguero is ready to sign a contract extension that will keep him at Manchester City until 2020, Goal has learned.

Aguero only signed a five-year deal in August 2014, which was designed to keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2019.

The Argentina striker claimed at the end of last year that he will stay in Manchester until the end of his deal and then return to his boyhood club, Independiente.

But he has been in talks with City officials for the past month and is close to agreeing a one-year extension on top of his existing agreement. Official confirmation is expected in the coming weeks.

With Pep Guardiola's arrival announced at the start of the week, following a growing sense behind the scenes that City had got their man, Aguero is more convinced than ever that his best days will come at the Etihad.

Guardiola is expected to overhaul the playing squad this summer, with as many as seven or eight first-teamers in danger of being shown the door.

Yaya Toure's agent has laid the groundwork for the Ivorian's exit, although it is understood the player himself is far less keen on a move.

Full-backs Aleksandar Kolarov and Pablo Zabaleta are both keen to stay and work with Guardiola, though the Catalan could well decide to dispense with the former, as well as a number of other players that have made significant contributions in recent years.

Aguero, though, will continue to be a key member of the City squad as the club enters a new era, and will soon put pen to paper to extend his stay.

Koeman: If Leicester can be first, maybe Southampton can be sixth

    ronald-koeman-southampton-premier-league-20160206_tf7p1q9he0oc1xo1hurquvld2.jpg

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman has his sights set on a top-six finish after his 10 men held on to defeat West Ham 1-0 in the Premier League on Saturday.

Defender Maya Yoshida's early goal proved decisive as the Saints earned a home victory despite Victor Wanyama's third red card of the season in the second half.
Koeman sees the win as a crucial step towards Southampton's goal of bettering last season's seventh-placed finish.

"It is a great win," Koeman told reporters. "West Ham had five points more, now the gap is only two points and we are back fighting for what is our ambition.

"We will try to do it even better than last season. That is very difficult because ending the season in seventh position in the table was fantastic but we have good players, a good team, we have a really good belief and confidence at the moment.

"We are looking forward to the rest of the season - if Leicester can be the first, maybe Southampton can be the sixth."Southampton have kept five consecutive Premier League clean sheets and travel Swansea City next Saturday.

Granada 1-2 Real Madrid: Modric stunner keeps title hopes alive

    2653172_heroa.jpg

A spectacular strike from Luka Modric secured a vital 2-1 victory for Real Madrid away to Granada in La Liga on Sunday.

Zinedine Zidane's side went into the match with a seven-point deficit to leaders Barcelona, and were unable to recapture the form which saw them fire six past Espanyol a week ago.

Karim Benzema put Madrid ahead after half an hour but Granada, who had a goal disallowed for offside in either half, deservedly levelled the match through substitute Youssef El-Arabi, though the visitors were frustrated at some accidental interference on Modric from referee Jesus Gil Manzano.

David Lomban saw a header ruled out for offside as the hosts, who began the match two points from safety in 19th, continued to cause real problems for a Madrid outfit who looked well short of the standards they have hit under Zidane in recent weeks.

Yet Modric turned hero for his side as he rifled in from distance with five minutes to play to move Madrid back to within four points of Barca, who earlier beat Levante 2-0 and have played one game fewer.

Granada impressed in their narrow defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu earlier this season and enjoyed a bright start, with Adalberto Penaranda denied by the offside flag after drilling home at the near post with Keylor Navas caught out of position outside the area.

Cristiano Ronaldo flashed a shot just wide of the far post after being picked out by a fine James Rodriguez pass as Madrid offered a glimpse of their threat in behind the Granada line, and they exploited it to clinical effect on 30 minutes as Benzema opened the scoring.

Dani Carvajal was picked out in acres of space to the right of the area by Isco's pass, and his cut-back was tapped home by Benzema from just six yards out.

Andres Fernandez was on hand in the 56th minute to keep Granada alive in the match, making a superb one-handed save low to his right to deny Benzema after Modric's pass had split the home defence, and they found themselves on level terms just three minutes later.

Modric lost possession in midfield after being impeded by the referee, allowing Ruben Rochina to slide the ball through to El-Arabi, who - having only been on the pitch for two minutes - slotted the ball through the legs of the onrushing Navas and in, despite the best efforts of Carvajal.

Granada thought they had taken the lead when Lomban headed into the bottom corner, though El-Arabi was flagged for offside after attempting to flick the ball home, and Isaac Success had penalty appeals waved away after being brought down by Navas, though replays showed the goalkeeper clearly played the ball first.

The home side looked set for a vital point until Modric collected Mateo Kovacic's pass and blasted an unstoppable shot into the top-left corner from 25 yards to send the visiting dugout into raptures.

Chelsea defender Zouma set for scan on knee injury

    kurt-zouma-premier-league-chelsea-v-man-utd_15ib0x84vaj7q1legvgukumap9.jpg

Guus Hiddink confirmed Kurt Zouma is set to undergo MRI scans following an injury sustained in Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

Zouma was replaced by Gary Cahill in the 59th minute after his right knee buckled upon landing from an attempt to clear an aerial ball. The French defender's distress was audible while prone on the pitch before he was taken off on a stretcher.

Hiddink could not yet clarify the extent of the injury, but expects to know more following the completion of further examinations.

"Tomorrow [I can tell you] more. Everyone has seen it on the TV, it's a bad injury, but let's see. It's a hyperextension and that's always bad," the Dutchman told Sky Sports.

"I had the same problem once and it hurts a lot, but we will see tomorrow."I'm not a doctor, but let's see tomorrow. Let's calm down and see what the MRIs will show."

Jesse Lingard scored just two minutes after Zouma left the field, but Diego Costa preserved Hiddink's unbeaten run as Chelsea boss with a 91st-minute equaliser.

Terry: No communication with Chelsea over new deal

    hdp-john-terry-chelsea_dnu1j0t37qj81ec5xf3srfnbu.jpg

John Terry still harbours hope of remaining at Chelsea, despite revealing there is "no communication" between himself and the club over an extension to his contract.

Following the 5-1 victory over MK Dons in the FA Cup fourth round last weekend, Terry disclosed that talks over a new deal had broken down and he was set to leave Chelsea as a free agent at the end of the season.

However, last Monday, the club declared they had not ruled out the possibility of a future agreement with the 35-year-old captain.Following Sunday's 1-1 draw with Manchester United, Terry stated there are no ongoing discussions between himself and Chelsea.

"It's a difficult one. The club's the most important thing, there's no communication between myself and the club at the minute. I said what I had to say, that's how it was," Terry told Sky Sports."I made it very clear I wanted to stay, but nothing has changed from my point of view."

Terry was denied a penalty in the first half after Daley Blind appeared to block his goal-bound shot with his arm, and he felt the spot-kick should have been awarded.

"It was going in, I think. He's put his hands up and it's difficult for the referee, but, inside the box, it's going in, it's got to be a penalty for me," the former England skipper added.Terry was pleased to have rescued a point through Diego Costa's 91st-minute equaliser, but wants Chelsea to start winning more games as they look to break into the top half.

"We're in and around that mid-table and teams are dropping points in and around us and we need to start winning, but of late we're drawing too many games," he continued."They're a good side so it's not a bad result, but ideally we need to start winning."

‘We were the better team!’ - Tetchy Van Gaal frustrated by lack of Man Utd composure

    louis-van-gaal-manchester-united_1ook31z9hdsm21xcjb0oy8nmtk.jpg

A visibly annoyed Louis van Gaal expressed his disappointment at Manchester United’s failure to see out victory against Chelsea after they conceded a late equaliser at Stamford Bridge.

The Red Devils continued their resurgence in form with an energetic performance typified by Jesse Lingard’s delightful opener, but were pegged back in stoppage time by Diego Costa.

The result sees United fall 12 points behind leaders Leicester City after the weekend’s action, and Van Gaal believes his side undid all their hard work in the dying embers of the match.

“I think we played a superb game, until the last quarter, and then we didn’t keep the ball, or we don’t play the way that I think that we have to do,” the Dutchman told Sky Sports afterwards.

“It’s unbelievable we don’t reward ourselves. It’s deeply frustrating, because we were the better team. But we didn’t win again. We didn’t win. We had the better chances, but we didn’t win.”

He continued: “Chelsea pushed with long balls and more aggression, but nevertheless you have to keep the ball and you have to be composed, when you defend also you have to be composed, not kicking the ball away without any meaning.

“There were a lot of times I think where we could control the ball and play the ball. And also, we could have scored after the first goal I think.

"But you don’t reward yourself when you play such a game against a fantastic team like Chelsea. You have to reward yourself.”
Van Gaal was also unhappy with the number of free-kicks awarded to Chelsea by referee Michael Oliver, and felt his time-keeping was unfair against United.

“I don’t think all the fouls were free-kicks, but this referee gave them a lot of free-kicks at the end of the game,” explained the United boss, who confronted the fourth official at full-time.

“That was because the [stoppage] time was already over the six minutes, and then he let [Chelsea] kick he corner. Then we had a free pitch for us, a lot of space, and then he whistles.

“And he did it also in the first half – maybe you remember that! So I think you cannot do that, otherwise you don’t let the corner be taken because the six minutes has passed. I don’t think that is fair to two teams.”

Van Gaal lashes out at journalists over Mourinho rumours: Maybe I can say YOU'RE getting the sack!

    2603962_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal let his frustration show following Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Chelsea, blasting journalists for inventing rumours he is to be sacked and replaced by Jose Mourinho.

The Dutchman oversaw a tense affair on Sunday in which the Old Trafford side took the lead right after the hour mark through Jesse Lingard, but saw themselves pegged back in injury-time by Diego Costa's equaliser.

United's draw sees them miss the chance to close the gap on fourth-placed neighbours Manchester City who lost 3-1 to Leicester City on Saturday, prompting speculation Van Gaal is to be replaced in the dugout by ex-Blues' boss Mourinho.

However, Van Gaal was having none of it and decided to turn the tables when facing the media after the match.

"Why does the club have to deny it when you are creating stories? You have not spoken to Ed Woodward, nor with the Glazers," the 64-year-old said.

"Maybe I can say that you are getting the sack tomorrow, what is your name? Maybe I can announce that. Write what you want. Maybe you also remember the first years of Sir Alex? Maybe you can look at the statistics."

He continued: "That's why I am frustrated, because the gap is not going smaller. You can say it is misfortune but it is not the first time, Newcastle United was the same.

"For the third time in a row it was sparkling. I hope I will also get the support of the media this week!

"It's frustrating, not a big disappointment. We played well until the last quarter, and it's frustrating how they scored because Daley Blind was slipping.

"It is not easy to play here because the individual level of play is high in Chelsea. But it is better than last year, and last year we also played better than Chelsea I think but we lost 1-0.

"Now it's 1-1, so we improved!"

Nevertheless, Van Gaal took issue with the manner in which referee Michael Oliver brought proceedings to a close, and reserved praise for De Gea.

"When he whistled for full-time we were on the counter-attack, also in the first half," he said.

"So that was two times against Manchester United, so that is unfair. If you let them take the corner, you have to allow the counter-attack too."

"He [De Gea] was remarkable because they were nearly goals I think. They were fantastic saves."

Marseille 1-2 Paris Saint-Germain: Di Maria strike settles Le Classique

    2653012_heroa.jpg

Angel Di Maria's second-half strike handed Paris Saint-Germain a ninth successive Classique victory as Marseille were beaten 2-1 in Ligue 1.

Di Maria scored his ninth league goal of the campaign with 19 minutes remaining of the clash at Stade Velodrome to break home fans' hearts, after their side had dominated for most of a lively and free-flowing contest.

Marseille had not beaten their guests from the capital in any of the last 10 meetings between the teams and another disappointing night seemed inevitable when Zlatan Ibrahimovic gave the visitors an early lead with his 21st league goal of the campaign.

However, an uncertain first 15 minutes gave way to a fluid, dynamic display from the hosts. Spearheaded by Georges-Kevin N'Koudou and Lassana Diarra in central midfield, Marseille exposed PSG's casual approach to keeping possession and levelled through Remy Cabella midway through the opening period.

The visitors had not suffered a league defeat since March last year but, had it not been for a goal-line clearance by Maxwell, Laurent Blanc's men would have fallen behind at the end of the first half.

As it was, the bragging rights went to the away team, leaving PSG 24 points clear of Monaco at the top of the table and Marseille still searching for a first league win at home since September 13.

Ibrahimovic took less than two minutes to put the runaway leaders in front. Maxwell got in behind the Marseille defence down the left and produced an inch-perfect cross, giving the Sweden striker a simple tap-in at the back post.

Di Maria should have added a second for PSG in the 10th minute but shot agonisingly wide after being played in by Blaise Matuidi, while it took 16 minutes for Marseille to manage an effort on target, as Cabella fired at Kevin Trapp from 20 yards.

Brice Dja Djedje's fizzing drive forced Trapp to push the ball over for a corner four minutes later and Marseille, who went into the game protecting an 11-match unbeaten record, showed signs of recovery and found an equaliser in the 25th minute.Cabella collected the ball just inside the PSG half, beat Thiago Motta and darted to the edge of the box before firing beyond Trapp, low to the keeper's right.

The hosts dominated for much of the rest of the half, making a mockery of the 32-point gap between the teams prior to kick-off, and they would have had the lead five minutes before the break but for Maxwell's goal-line clearance from Michy Batshuayi.

Marseille began the second period in the same way they finished the first, winning possession in midfield and threatening PSG with every attack. N'Koudou tested Trapp from 25 yards and it seemed inevitable that the home team would score the game's third goal.

However, it was PSG who struck next. Ibrahimovic collected possession in the Marseille box and pulled the ball back for Di Maria, who shimmied away from his marker and found the bottom right-hand corner.

It was a cruel blow for the hosts, who could not fashion a route back into the contest, with N'Koudou and Romain Alessandrini firing off-target in the dying stages.

Hiddink: Chelsea deserved a point against Man Utd

    guus-hiddink-chelsea-premier-league-20160113_16m9qsn51vk4z1m5qinib5o9pn.jpg

Guus Hiddink believes Chelsea were good value for a point after a stoppage-time Diego Costa goal sealed a 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.Jesse Lingard put United ahead after 61 minutes before Costa clinched a share of the spoils in the first minute of added on time.

And, while Hiddink was full of praise for United, he felt they did not create many big chances and his side's desperation for an equaliser merited the end result.

"We deserved the point at the end," Hiddink said. "In any minute you can score, but to go back to the game I think United started very well in the first half.

"Without seeing all the images, they started well and they stretched us out and because of that we dropped back instead of going forward."They had the threat in the first 20 minutes without any big opportunities.

"It was a bit the same in the second half, they stretched us and they had a beautiful goal with Lingard, but there was no resistance from our side, which we have to explore."After that we reacted very well and went for the equaliser and at the end we had some opportunities.

"Both goalies deserve compliments because they weren't easy to beat, but at the end we had some chances so we deserve the point."While he was happy to take the point and for Chelsea to remain undefeated under his stewardship, Hiddink feels finishing in the top four is a big ask given his team's lack of wins.

"I said before when we were one point from the relegation zone our target must be fourth place for the Champions League, but we need to start winning games," Hiddink added.

"We are unbeaten, but if you want to get into the top four you must have victories and we have had too many>
