Portugal 1-1 Israel: Ben Haim sinks Seleccao's automatic World Cup hopes

    327511hp2.jpg

Portugal's slender hopes of securing automatic World Cup 2014 qualification were scuppered by a late Israel equaliser in Friday's 1-1 draw.

Ricardo Costa opened the scoring for the hosts at the Estadio Jose Alvalade with a close-range finish in the sixth minute.

But a late error from keeper Rui Patricio threw two points away for Portugal, as he hit an attempted clearance straight to Eden Ben Basat in the 85th minute before the striker coolly applied the finish.

Hugo Almeida thought he had put the home side 2-0 ahead with a back-post header shortly after the break, but his celebrations were cut short by the offside flag.

The result means Paulo Bento's side trail Russia by three points ahead of their final Group F fixture with Luxembourg on Tuesday.

Bento named an attacking line-up that included Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Moutinho and Nani, while Israel were without striker Tomer Hemed due to a knee injury.

Portugal looked to attack right from the off and Ruben Micael drove an effort wide from Hugo Almeida's deft header as early as the fourth minute.

But Israel nearly caught the hosts on the counter-attack when Andre Almeida missed an interception, allowing Ben Basat to take the ball before he dragged his shot wide of Rui Patricio's goal.

The hosts hit back though, and Micael once again went close in the 26th minute. Nani bundled his way across the midfield before the ball fell kindly for the midfielder, whose snapshot was tipped over the bar by Dudu Aouate.

However, Portugal did not have to wait long to take a deserved lead, when Pepe cushioned a deep cross back across the six-yard box and Costa got down low to head his team in front.

The goal appeared to ease the pressure on Bento's men as they pressed for a second, with Nani's cross narrowly evading the head of Ronaldo six minutes before the break.

And Portugal started the second half in similar fashion with plenty of attacking intent, although the visitors had a good opportunity to level the scores five minutes after half-time.

Defender Omri Ben Harush cut inside Costa but showed a lack of composure to strike tamely at Patricio.

The home crowd believed the lead had been extended in the 55th minute, only to see Almeida's header from Antunes' deep cross ruled out.

Costa should have had a second when he found himself unmarked in the six-yard area from a corner, but the ball bounced over the bar after the Valencia defender headed into the ground.

Nelson Oliveira then chipped wide when a simple pass to Ronaldo appeared to be the better option after an incisive Portugal break.

And they were punished with just five minutes remaining when Patricio's blunder gifted Ben Basat the leveller.

Portugal now must win their final game convincingly, while hoping Russia lose heavily away to Azerbaijan, to qualify automatically for Brazil 2014.

Netherlands 8-1 Hungary: Van Persie hat-trick sees goal record smashed in Dutch rampage

    327479hp2.jpg

Netherlands were inspired by a record-breaking Robin van Persie to a rampant 8-1 win over Hungary on Friday.

The 30-year-old struck twice in the first half to equal Patrick Kluivert’s tally of 40 goals, and he broke the record eight minutes after the break with a close-range finish.

The Manchester United striker opened the scoring early with a well-placed header before Kevin Strootman doubled the Dutch’s lead with a looping header of his own.

Jeremain Lens and Van Persie’s second then put the hosts in complete control at the break and while Hungary pulled a goal back through a Balazs Dzsudzsak penalty, Van Persie soon netted his 41st international goal to take his place in the record books.

Szilard Devecseri scored an own goal with 25 minutes left before a free kick double from Rafael van der Vaart and Arjen Robben sealed Netherlands’ emphatic win.

Dutch coach Louis van Gaal made five changes to the side that beat Andorra to seal their qualification last month, while the visitors brought in Zsolt Korcsmar and Jozsef Varga for Zsolt Laczko and Akos Elek from their 5-1 win over Estonia.

Hungary soon found themselves chasing the game as Van Persie opened the scoring after just 16 minutes, the striker backing off his defender inside the penalty area to head Daryl Janmaat’s cross into the top corner for his ninth goal of qualifying.

And nine minutes later, the lead was doubled by Strootman. Lens delivered a perfect cross this time onto the head of the Roma midfielder, whose looped header beat Adam Bogdan.

Lens then got his name on the scoresheet in the 38th minute after Strootman’s chipped pass to Robben had been cleared by a Hungary defender and the Dynamo Kiev forward reacted quickest to fire into the back of the net.

And as the Dutch ran riot, Van Persie netted their fourth just before half-time to move level with Kluivert. Robben raced down the left and clipped a cross to the front post, where the Manchester United man was on hand to headed past Bogdan.

The visitors were awarded a penalty two minutes into the second half after Jeffrey Bruma handled a Dzsudzsak cross. The midfielder took the penalty himself and calmly sent Michel Vorm the wrong way to pull a goal back.

But the night belonged to Van Persie and, with 53 minutes on the clock, he claimed his place in Dutch footballing history. Strootman and Robben were again involved as the former found the latter with a left-wing cross, and when the Bayern Munich forward headed the ball down to Van Persie, he had the simple task of knocking the ball home.

It was six when a Lens cross to the back post was headed into his own goal by Devecseri, but the Dutch were not finished there.

First, Van der Vaart’s 86th-minute free-kick from the edge of the area found the net via a deflection before Robben curled home another set-piece on the brink of full-time to condemn Hungary to a defeat that leaves their play-off hopes in the balance.

:love:Van Persie breaks Netherlands goal record

    327453_heroa.jpg

Robin van Persie has become the top goalscorer of all time for Netherlands following a hat-trick against Hungary on Friday.

The Manchester United striker, 30, went into the penultimate World Cup 2014 qualifier with 38 goals in 78 games for the Oranje, and the pressure was off for the hosts, who had secured a spot in Brazil next summer in September.

Van Persie scored after 16 minutes to prove that the Dutch were not resting on their laurels with a looped header to open the scoring, before Kevin Strootman and Jeremain Lens added to the lead.

The Oranje skipper drew level with Patrick Kluivert's 40-goal tally on the stroke of half-time with another header and he celebrated by hugging the joint-record-holder, who is Louis van Gaal's assistant coaches in the international set-up.

Hungary pulled a goal back after half-time, but Van Persie ensured he would steal the headlines by knocking in from close range to complete his hat-trick and seal the new record.

The former Arsenal man also became joint-top goalscorer in the World Cup 2014 qualifiers with 11 goals in Netherlands' nine qualifiers.

:love:Spain 2-1 Belarus: Xavi & Negredo allow Roja one foot in Brazil

    327520hp2.jpg

Spain planted one foot in Brazil thanks to second-half strikes from Xavi and Alvaro Negredo to win 2-1 at home to Belarus on Friday.

The world and European champions were made to work for the Group I victory, which came thanks to second-half strikes from Xavi and Alvaro Negredo; a result that leaves them on the verge of booking their place at next year's World Cup in Brazil.

Spain struggled to break down their opponents in the first half but took the lead in the 61st minute thanks to a superb Xavi strike.

Negredo, introduced as a second-half substitute for debutant Michu, then doubled Spain's lead with a terrific header, meaning Sergey Kornilenko's late effort was merely a consolation.

Vicente del Bosque's side now need just one point against Georgia in Albacete on Tuesday to confirm their place at the World Cup.

In the absence of the injured Fernando Torres and David Villa, Spain manager Del Bosque selected Swansea City's Michu from the start, while goalkeeper Iker Casillas and midfielder Andres Iniesta were named among the substitutes.

Belarus, who were without former Barcelona and Arsenal midfielder Alexander Hleb due to suspension, opted for a 3-5-2 formation as they sought to end their qualifying campaign on a good note.

Spain's top scorer in qualifying, Pedro, ran at the Belarus defence and caused problems early, while Michu failed to make the most of a David Silva ball before the latter nodded wide.

As expected, Spain controlled possession, but they struggled to create clear chances as Belarus were happy to sit back and soak up pressure.

The closest the hosts came in the first half was a curling Silva effort, but Belarus goalkeeper Aleksandr Gutor was equal to the task, while Michu headed a Nacho Monreal cross wide.

Belarus had claims for a spot-kick on the verge of half-time, with Stanislav Dragun's cross appearing to strike the hand of Gerard Pique - who had already been booked - but no penalty was given as both sides entered the break goalless.

A frustrated Del Bosque replaced Monreal with Iniesta at the break, before Michu's uninspiring debut came to a close in the 57th minute.

Spain took the lead just moments later, with Pique's effort in keeping an aimless ball alive at the byline crucial.

The Barcelona defender's hooked ball back in was not cleared properly, as Yegor Filipenko's header fell perfectly to Xavi,
and the midfielder hit a bullet strike that left Gutor with no chance as Spain finally took the lead.

Negredo then added to Spain's lead with 12 minutes to play as he netted a superb diving header.

Pedro's flick freed Sergio Ramos down the right, and his inch-perfect cross was powerfully nodded home by the Manchester City forward.

A rare Belarus attack saw Sergei Kislyak force Victor Valdes into a rare save, while Kornilenko bagged a late left-footed strike to cap a swift counter, but Spain did just enough to post an important victory.

Argentina vs. Peru: Final score 3-1, Ezequiel Lavezzi leads La Albiceleste to victory

Argentina didn't need a win over Peru but since they'd publicly talked about the importance of finishing atop CONMEBOL qualifying, a win was required. Despite falling behind early, Argentina responded well and pulled away from Peru behind a brace from Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Peru got off to a great start and took the lead in the 21st minute when Claudio Pizarro ran onto a lovely long ball over the Argentine defense. Sergio Romero didn't react quick enough and couldn't decide whether to sit back or charge down Pizarro. Seeing the goalkeeper's indecision, Pizarro softly chipped the ball up and over Romero and into the back of the net.

Less than two minutes later Argentina earned a dubious corner kick that was taken by Ángel Di Maria. Federico Fernandez got free in the area and sent a header on frame that was chaotically blocked by goalkeeper Diego Penny. He couldn't control the rebound at all though and Ezequiel Lavezzi, who was lurking at the far post, happily poked the loose ball over the line to pull Argentina back even at 1-1.

In the 35th minute Lavezzi scored his second goal of the match to give Argentina their first lead. Di Maria was involved again, springing Rodrigo Palacio free into the area with a lovely pass. Palacio showed some great vision, centering the ball back towards Lavezzi who extended his leg and directed the ball to the left past Penny.
La Albiceleste wasted little time expanding their lead in the second half as Palacio got on the board in the 47th minute. Sergio Agüero's pass from the top of the area wide to Marcos Rojo created the chance and it was the deft finish by Palacio in front of Penny that capped it off.

Giroud: France played beautiful football to thrash Australia

    327470_heroa.jpg

Olivier Giroud has credited his team-mates with playing "beautiful" football in France's 6-0 win over Australia.

The Arsenal striker notched two goals within the opening 30 minutes as les Blues geared up for their final Group I World Cup qualifying game against Finland on Tuesday in style.

Giroud is in fine form for club and country, with eight goals in 15 outings, but was keen to congratulate the other members of the France squad as they subjected Australia to a second consecutive six-goal loss, resulting in the dismissal of manager Holger Osieck.

"The first goal, I try it sometimes and if it does not work people say it's because I have not played well, but when it comes off, it come off," Giroud told L'Equipe.

"The second goal was a beautiful team movement. I hope to see more of that in the future.

"To assess a striker, he must perform on the big occasions. Tonight, I was provided with many chances so I could perform.

"To score goals, the France team needs several good strikers. We are fortunate to have two strikers who complement different tactics.

"I am very happy for me, but also for Karim [Benzema] who scored. It's good for us to score, but also for les Bleus."

Osvaldo relishing new lease of life with Italy

    327443_heroa.jpg

Pablo Daniel Osvaldo says he is relishing life back in the Italy fold after leading his side to a point in Friday's World Cup qualifier against Denmark.

The Southampton striker handed his side the lead in the first half before setting up Alberto Aquilani for a dramatic late equaliser in the 2-2 draw in Copenhagen.

And the 27-year-old is determined to remain in Cesare Prandelli's plans after a year of international uncertainty, during which he was left out of the squad for Euro 2012 before being kicked out of the party for this summer's Confederations Cup after a spat with interim Roma boss Aurelio Andreazzoli.

"At the end the result was fair," he told Rai Sport of the encounter with Denmark. "When I'm called up I think about giving my best, then the coach will decide.

"I like to play, but I'm just glad to be part of this group. Prandelli always has nice words for me and I try to pay him back on the pitch."

Osvaldo joined Southampton from Roma this summer for a fee in the region of €15 million, but he insists he is delighted to see his former side performing well under new boss Rudi Garcia following their unbeaten start to the Serie A season.

"I'm delighted Roma are top of the table," he added. "I have many friends there and I miss the dressing room and my friendships there. I hope they carry on like this.

"Regardless of everything that's been said, I was fine with everyone and we loved each other. Now I am calm and peaceful in England and I hope the results keep coming."

Alberto Aquilani bundled home a fortuitous Azzurri equaliser in stoppage-time after Nicklas Bendtner struck twice for the home side on Friday, and the Fiorentina midfielder acknowledged it was a good result for his side given the determination displayed by Morten Olsen's outfit.

"Mine was a lucky goal, Osvaldo did well to aim at my knee," Aquilani said.

"It was a difficult test. Denmark played the game of their life and we saw that on the pitch. We started well, but at the end of the first half we eased off."
