Townsend eyes place in Hodgson's England squad for World Cup

    327495_heroa.jpg

Tottenham winger Andros Townsend says he is determined to "force his way" into Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad during England's upcoming friendlies.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a fine debut against Montenegro in October, when he scored with a long-range strike and set up another goal, before putting in another strong display against Poland.

But Townsend does not believe he can get complacent after just two games for the Three Lions and is keen to maintain his form as he bids to secure a spot on the plane to Brazil next summer.

"It does sound good, being called an England international, but I have had two games and there have been a lot of players who have started their international careers well and have faded away," Townsend told FA TV.

"I can't let that happen to me, I have to keep playing well and try to force my way onto the plane next summer."

With just one more friendly against Denmark before Hodgson picks his provisional squad for next summer’s World Cup in Brazil, Townsend is intent on taking his chances in the forthcoming fixtures against Chile and Germany.

"We have a big, fantastic squad and every one of us is going to be trying to impress in training and the games to try and get to Brazil," Townsend continued.

"There aren't many opportunities from now until the summer to play for England and impress the manager so everyone will be giving 100 per cent and looking to catch the manager's eye."

The Spurs man also believes both the fixtures against Chile and Germany will provide a stern test for the Three Lions ahead of the showpiece event next summer.

"I think that [the friendly against Germany] is a great opportunity to test ourselves against the best going into next summer," Townsend added.

"We can see where we are, we can see what we need to work on and see how far we have got to go to be one of the top nations, so it's a great friendly.

"Chile have got some fantastic players, no more so than Alexis Sanchez, who plays for Barcelona, so it's not going to be an easy game.

"It will be a great occasion. They will come here looking to try to win the game so it should be a good open encounter and I'm looking forward to it, should I get the chance to step onto the field."

Carrick: Manchester United never worried despite ‘shocking start’

    331717_heroa.jpg

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick says the reigning Premier League champions were never worried by their "shocking" start to the season.

The Red Devils suffered league defeats against West Brom, Liverpool and Manchester City at the start of the campaign as they began the defence of their title in inconsistent form.

However, David Moyes’ men have improved in recent weeks and, after beating league leaders Arsenal on Sunday, now lie in fifth place just five points from top spot.

"After a shocking start we are not in a bad position. We never really got too despondent," he told reporters.

"We were frustrated with our performances and results. But you have to stay patient and trust yourself. We knew there was a long way to go. There still is a long way to go.

"In some ways we probably didn't think a few weeks ago we would be in this position quite as quickly. At the same time, we are not in bad shape at the moment. It is so early anyway.

"It is easy to jump on the bandwagon when we have lost a game or two and people are saying it is all wrong. We knew that wasn't the case.

"You can take it as a compliment in some ways because of what we have done over the years.

"When we are not at the top, because of our recent run in the league, people are asking questions and criticising.

"In some ways it is fair. In some ways we take it with a pinch of salt. We look at how we deal with it from within."

United travel to Cardiff City for their next Premier League fixture after the international break.

    :frown::baffled::baffled:Lehmann: Premier League has weakened

    340018_heroa.jpg

Jens Lehmann believes the Premier League is not as strong as it once was.

Lehmann enjoyed a five-year stint at Arsenal between 2003 and 2008 before coming out of retirement to return briefly in 2011 via a spell at Stuttgart.

But the the former Germany international feels that Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have closed the gap at the top of European football, in stark contrast to the leading English sides.

"I think the duel at the top is pretty balanced, because Bayern and Dortmund have caught up a lot over the last years," he told reporters.

"And I think the English League isn't as good anymore at the top or as strong as it used to be."

Dortmund and Bayern meet in the Bundesliga directly after the international break and the 44-year-old has predicted that the game will finish in a draw, as his former club Dortmund will be eager to avoid a third straight defeat.

"Last year Arsenal has won in Munich 2-0 and lost at home 3-1," he said.

"If it wasn't for that [away goals] rule, maybe it wouldn't have gone into overtime. Dortmund has won once and lost once [against Arsenal].

"The chances of Borussia Dortmund losing three times in a row are pretty small, therefore I believe that it least it will be a draw."

Ribery calls for fearless France display against Ukraine

    340134_heroa.jpg

Franck Ribery has called for his France team-mates to approach the World Cup play-off against Ukraine without any fear.

Both the French and Ukrainian sides finished second in Group I and Group H respectively, with the first leg of their subsequent play-off taking place in Kiev on Friday.

And, while Ribery admits there is plenty of pressure surrounding the play-off, the Bayern Munich man wants France to go into the game with confidence.

"These games are special. It's surrounded by a difficult context. Now, we need to play with no pressure. We should not be scared," he told reporters.

Ukraine have not conceded in their last seven matches and have not lost since October 2012.

Ribery consequently insists that Ukraine must be respected, adding: "It's going to be two difficult games. We should not take things easy against this team or say to ourselves we are already in Brazil.

"They are very strong defensively. They didn't concede many goals. They play well in counterattack. We need to be ready and get a good result there. Then, we will have to manage the game at home well."

Ribery, who has nine goals for Bayern this season in all competitions, has also paid tribute to his club manager Pep Guardiola for his fine form.

The 30-year-old has been nominated for the Ballon d'Or award and hailed the impact Guardiola has made since arriving at the Allianz Arena.

"My confidence comes from the appointment of Guardiola, that helped me a lot," he added. "He is a coach who says to me every day that I have to try my luck more and shoot more on goal.

"I tended to pass the ball at training two metres away from the goals and he said: 'You should have scored, you should have shot.' That's confidence.

"Since he joined the club, I have scored goals for Bayern and the French national team. Hopefully, it will continue."

Wilshere hits out at critics: I'm still only young

    334403_heroa.jpg

Jack Wilshere has called for patience from his critics, adding that he is paying the price for an early rise through the ranks at Arsenal.

The midfielder made his first-team debut for the Gunners aged just 16, but a succession of injuries have hampered his progress at both domestic and international level.

And Wilshere, who has struggled for consistency since returning from a 17-month lay-off a year ago, feels those questioning his ability must take into account that he is still learning his trade.

"Yes, I do think [people forget my age]," Wilshere told the club's official website. "Not just because I've been around for a long time, but people hear I've got two kids and it's not often you hear about a 21-year-old with two kids.

"I have been in the [Arsenal] first team since I was 16, so that is five years and that is quite a long time in football terms.

"I made my debut when I was 16 and the aim was to play for England and it came pretty quickly - when I was 18. Then the main thing after that was to keep my place in the Arsenal team week in, week out and I did during that season.

"I then had a frustrating year with injury and it is tough when you are out injured, you have got to come back. People think that when you are out injured you don't do a lot of work, but you do, trust me."

Wilshere admits his continued rehabilitation from injury has been a struggle and he expects those to point out when he has played poorly, but feels his ability to play against far more experienced professionals must be noted.

He continued: "It is tough, but last season I got back into the team, got fit again and had 30-odd games which was nice, and this year I have stayed fit so far and that's the aim for the rest of season.

"People are always going to criticise you and judge your performances all the time. They are paid to do that, so you have to concentrate on your own game.

"I play week in, week out against 31- and 32-year-olds, so I think you just have to take that [into account]."

Mexico 5-1 New Zealand: El Tri take step closer to World Cup spot with dominant display

    340473hp2.jpg

Mexico took a massive step closer to World Cup qualification with an emphatic first leg play-off victory over New Zealand.

First-half strikes from Paul Aguilar and Raul Jimenez put the hosts in control, with Oribe Peralta's double and Rafael Marquez's effort extending their advantage after the interval.

New Zealand battled hard to stay in the game and added a late consolation through Chris James at the Estadio Azteca.

But the hosts, who enjoyed 75 per cent of the possession, will take a healthy advantage into next Wednesday's second leg in Wellington.

El Tri entered the play-off looking to end a disastrous 2013 on a high note to reach the World Cup. In order to do so, the federation went through three coaches over the last six weeks before deciding on Club America manager Miguel Herrera to guide the national team to Brazil next summer.

Herrera did not join the team quietly. After leading Mexico to a win over Finland in a friendly last month, the coach made headlines when he decided to choose an all domestic-based squad for the two-leg playoff against the All Whites, leaving big names Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez, Giovani dos Santos and Hector Moreno in Europe for the games.

Herrera, who has not ruled out bringing back the European-based players should Mexico hold on and qualify for the World Cup, added seven Club America players to the squad. And the decision paid off early on against 79th-ranked New Zealand.

Two of Mexico's four scorers (Aguilar and Jimenez) play for Club America, who play their matches at Estadio Azteca and are the reigning Liga MX champions.

It was said before the match that New Zealand would need to rely on a solid defence to hold off Herrera's attacking style of play, but the All Whites' back line had no answer from the start. Goalkeeper Glen Moss did all he could but Mexico's 21 shots were too much to handle.

The hosts were first to threaten when Jimenez nearly scored from a cross before Moss slid across to make the save. Moments later, Moss got his fingertips on a long Maza Rodriguez shot to deflect the ball off the crossbar.

It took El Tri 10 shots before they finally found the first goal thanks to Aguilar being at the right place at the right time to pick up the rebound off a headed clearance by Andrew Durante.

El Tri kept the pressure on and nearly found their second after Peralta beat the defence to tap in an Aguilar pass, but the forward was called offside. Moss then had to make a couple more spectacular saves before Mexico would find their second to build a nice cushion heading into half-time.

New Zealand's defenders struggled in all aspects of the game, but their poor marking off a Mexico corner left Jimenez wide open inches from the goal. And if they thought they had made any adjustments to stop the attack at half-time, they were wrong.

Peralta got his seventh goal in as many international games when he made it 3-0, scoring from a Miguel Layun cross after good work from Rafa Marquez.

By this point, New Zealand still hadn't had a real opportunity as Mexico dominated possession, but the hosts weren't done.

With 20 minutes left to play, Peralta headed in Mexico's fourth unanswered goal. Just minutes later, Marquez decided to get into the scoring action with a header of his own to leave New Zealand with a huge mountain to climb to reach their second successive World Cup.

The one bright spot for the All Whites came in the 84th minute as James scored, but there was no celebrating from the visitors. After watching Mexico hold the ball for 73% of the time, it may take a miracle for New Zealand to eliminate the dominating El Tri side, which is one game away from its seventh consecutive World Cup.

:(Van Persie not fit, says Van Gaal

    339969_heroa.jpg

Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal says Manchester United striker Robin van Persie is not fit.

The 30-year-old withdrew from the Oranje squad, complaining of toe and groin injuries following his winning goal against his former club Arsenal on Sunday.

The Dutch face Japan and Colombia in their pair of friendly encounters, and Van Gaal says he was not going to risk further aggravating his country's record scorer's niggling problems.

"It will be different with other players this time, especially with another striker," he told reporters. "When we played Turkey, Van Persie also wasn't 100 per cent per cent, but because he's an important player, he was there anyway.

"Van Persie called me on Sunday and we discussed the situation. He didn't really have a holiday this summer, because he had to go to Asia with United. He just went on and on.

"It's smart to keep in mind what that does to a player. Even if we had an important match, I wouldn't have played him this time."

However, Van Gaal says that when the Dutch attacker is fit, his position alongside Arjen Robben and Kevin Strootman in the team is not at threat.

"It's unbelievable but true, every player is fit. I always think of players who are fit and available," he continued.

"Those are the ones I pick. RVP, [Dirk] Kuyt and Van Persie are not available, but I always said that Robben, Strootman and Van Persie are sure of their places if they are in shape.

"It will be interesting to see how we manage without Van Persie. We have to show how we are when he's not available. That could always be a scenario in Brazil."

Netherlands have already seen their attacking options curtailed with the absence of injured trio Kuyt, Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

"Because Van Wolfswinkel and Huntelaar are injured, we dont have many strikers," Van Gaal said. "They are the ones behind Van Persie, but that can change if someone steps up now.

"Siem de Jong is a back-up plan in case of emergency, just like he is at Ajax.

"[Jeremain] Lens is also an option as central striker, especially when we come ahead in a match. It's nice to experience something like this so we can solve a problem."

Lucas: PSG are stronger than last year

    339827_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain winger Lucas Moura believes Laurent Blanc's men are capable of going far in all competitions this season.

The 21-year-old Brazilian is one of a number of superb attacking talents in the squad.

And he feels they have the ammunition to reach new heights this year.

"There is a huge amount of quality in this team, with lots of experienced players," he told beIN Sport.

"We have a very efficient coach and i'm delighted to be a part of this team. I really feel we could go far this term.

"With the new system of three midfielders and three forwards, I feel we are stronger than last season."

Although Lucas has often had to settle for a place on the bench in this campaign, he is still very happy at the club.

And admits that being a squad player is something he has to accept, no matter how frustrating it may be.

"I feel very good this season and people have helped me a lot, especially the Brazilian players," he said.

"We have formed a great bond together. This is a team with a lot of big stars and plenty of competition in attack, and it's a fantastic experience.

"I accept that I won't always play, and that when I do I'm more confined to a right-hand side role compared to previous years, but it is nothing to get too worried about."

Jones pleased at centre-back chance for Manchester United

    339931_heroa.jpg

Phil Jones admits he is pleased to finally be playing at centre-back for Manchester United as he looks to cement his place in England's World Cup squad.

Jones is held in high regard at Old Trafford but has been utilised in a variety of roles across the back four and in midfield since his arrival from Blackburn in the summer of 2011.

But with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic suffering with injury problems the 21-year-old is set to be given his chance alongside Jonny Evans in the heart of defence.

"I'm happy with my own form," he told the Sun. "I'm pleased to be getting a bit of a run at centre-half.

"It's always nice to play in the position you feel most comfortable in. I played in midfield against Norwich in the Capital One Cup, but mostly it has been centre-back and that's where I want to be.

"When I came, it was always the plan to establish myself as a centre-back and I hope to do it this season. If the manager keeps faith in me, I'll make sure I can cement a spot there and get a good run there."

Jones also hopes he can maintain his good form and persuade England boss Roy Hodgson to include him in his squad for next summer's World Cup.

"England? There's a lot of competition. Some top centre-halves, midfielders," he continued.

"It's going to be difficult for me to push my way into the team. But, hopefully, I can force my way on to the plane.

"There's a good little group of us from United, six or seven of us. It can only help England if we are playing together."

    Muller aiming for unbeaten season

    339159_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller believes his side can go the entire Bundesliga season unbeaten.

Last season's treble-winners have not lost a league game in 41 matches, and recently broke the record for the longest unbeaten run in Germany.

And the 24-year-old, who has been a key player during this period, sees no reason why Roten can't remain unbeaten all season long.

"Arsenal did it in England, and last season we got very close but lost to Leverkusen," he told Bild.

"It's not easy, but it's certainly an incentive for the season. We believe we can do it."

Muller also discussed the upcoming clash with Dortmund on November 23, saying he feels it now has a similar level of importance to El Clasico in Spain.

"It's always been a big game, but recently it's become even more explosive because of the huge success of both sides," he added.

"It has the potential to be the biggest game in Europe, like El Clasico has been over the years.

"It's a shame it takes place straight after the internationals, but it's something we have to accept. We haven't won there for a few years, and it's time we produced a better performance there.

"These patterns of results have to come to an end at some point."

The Germany international also spoke about the imminent international friendlies with Italy and England and believes they are a good tests ahead of next summer's World Cup.

"Because they are against teams in the top category they are important gauges for the World Cup next summer," he continued.

"For the mood of the country it would be great to win both games. In my opinion we are stronger than both sides. We are one of the top teams in world football, and I feel we are only going to get better."

Jordan 0-5 Uruguay: Suarez & Co. put one foot in the World Cup

    340422hp2.jpg

Uruguay put one foot in the World Cup finals with a 5-0 hammering of Jordan in their inter-continental play-off on Wednesday.

Maximiliano Pereira put the visitors ahead midway through the first half, before Cristian Stuani doubled that lead from close range three minutes before the break.
Nicolas Lodeiro, Cristian Rodriguez and Edinson Cavani netted further goals for Oscar Tabarez's men in the second 45 minutes, as Jordan's hopes of reaching their maiden World Cup finals suffered a major setback.

The result brings to an end the hosts' 16-match unbeaten run at home and leaves them with a mountain to climb in the return leg next week.

Tabarez made three changes to the Uruguay side that beat Argentina 3-2 in the final match of the South American qualification process, with goalkeeper Martin Silva’s introduction in place of the injured Fernando Muslera among the alterations.
Jordan, meanwhile, were almost unrecognisable from their last competitive encounter - a goalless draw with Oman - with Adnan Hasan and Odai Alsaify just two of the seven players to come in.

Hasan got the first shot on target for the hosts, but his drilled effort from 20 yards was straight at Silva in the Uruguay goal. The visitors were slow in settling in at the Amman International Stadium and struggled to create any meaningful chances in the early stages.

They were almost made to pay after 18 minutes when Alsaify beat his man on the edge of the penalty area and forced Silva to tip around his left post for a corner.

But it was the South Americans who took the lead after 21 minutes through Pereira. Mohamad Shatnawi failed to hold onto a Cavani header following an excellent cross from the right, and Pereira capitalised by latching onto the rebound to put his side ahead from close range.

And Jordan’s dreams of reaching Brazil 2014 took a further blow in the 42nd minute when Uruguay doubled their advantage. Stuani found himself in acres of space at the far post and slotted under Shatnawi after a delightful chipped cross by Lodeiro.

Ahmad Ibrahim inexplicably guided the ball wide of the target from inside the six-yard box 10 minutes into the second period, wasting a glorious opportunity to give Jordan a fighting chance of getting back into the tie.

Substitute Musab Al Laham was then booked for simulation just seconds after coming on when he threw himself to the ground in a desperate bid for a penalty, before Lodeiro made sure of the victory for Uruguay in the 70th minute.

The Botafogo man fired home from the edge of the penalty area with the Jordan defence in disarray, and Rodriguez added to the rout eight minutes later with a left-footed thunderbolt from 12 yards.

Tabarez's side continued to pile on the pressure late on and Cavani got in on the act with a stunning injury-time free-kick to all but secure Uruguay's place at Brazil 2014.

Benitez: Higuain is Napoli's best player

    337706_heroa.jpg

Gonzalo Higuain is the most influential player at Napoli, according to coach Rafa Benitez.

The 25-year-old striker joined Partenopei from Real Madrid for €40m this summer and has scored eight goals in his first 14 games for the Italian side.

Benitez was full of praise for his player, saying that, although perhaps not at the level of Diego Maradona when he played for Napoli, there is nobody more important in the side than Higuain currently.

"There isn't a Maradona. He was far above the rest," the Spaniard told Marca.
"Our team is based on the collective, although there is Higuaín who could be the most essential player here right now. He doesn't only score goals, he also makes the team play better."

The 53-year-old also spoke about what winning the Serie A title would mean to him this season, saying he would rank it higher than his Liga success with Valencia in the early 2000s.

"This would be more rewarding," he added."Valencia was already a club with a defined structure ,whereas there's still a way to go at Napoli."

Finally, when asked about his treatment by Chelsea fans while in charge of the club, he says it was only a select few who tried to make life difficult for him.
"There was just a group of fans whose opinion we couldn't change."

Playing Dortmund is the game of the year - Ribery

    304686_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery has described his side's clash with Borussia Dortmund as the "game of the year".

The two German giants face each other following the international break, on November 23, with Bayern four points clear of their rivals.

The size of the occasion has not been lost on the 30-year-old Frenchman, who knows that winning three points at Signal Iduna Park would be a major moment in the season.

"This is the definitely the game of the year," Ribery told Bundesliga.de.

"I'm looking forward to it. If we win there we would be seven points clear of Dortmund, and it would be a big moment in the title race.

"We will have to play with a lot of patience, and must take our chances when they come. Above all though, we must not lose the ball, because Dortmund are excellent on the break."

Ribery's last defeat in the league came against Dortmund some 41 games ago and he hopes history won't repeat itself later this month.

"I really hope that is not a bad omen for us," he said.

Finally, the in-form Frenchman spoke about his chances of winning the Ballon d'Or, with many tipping him to win the award ahead of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo after a fine 12 months which culminated in him lifting the treble with Bayern last season.

"Of course I think about winning it," he continued.

"For me to have a chance of winning the trophy I need to keep playing at my current level, having fun and playing without pressure on myself."

:(:(:(Injury exposes Moyes' reliance on Carrick after summer fiasco

    331717_heroa.jpg

The news that Michael Carrick faces up to six weeks out with an Achilles injury represents an undoubted blow to Manchester United who had just begun to rediscover some form and fluency under new boss David Moyes.

The Scot has overseen a nine-game unbeaten run that has put the champions back in reach of the teams at the top of the Premier League and on the brink of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Carrick has played a key role in the recovery after some early teething problems for Moyes, with the 32-year-old playing in 10 of United’s 11 league fixtures and three of their four European fixtures.

The only games he has missed came earlier in the month, as the Achilles problem that has hampered him since the start of the campaign intensified.

United had been managing the injury carefully - largely through rest, painkillers and pool work - and there was concern within the training ground last week that he would be unable to play in Sunday’s victory over Arsenal.

The decision itself for Carrick to take a lay-off was primarily driven by the player himself and timed for the international break so as to minimise the impact on United.

In a World Cup year, with no sign of improvement and extended rest the only remedy barring an operation, the club had little choice, especially with Carrick himself concerned that his performances have dropped from last season.

Carrick had an injection on Tuesday to reduce swelling in the area and will now miss the crucial Christmas period before returning to action in 2014.

But perhaps United could have strung more out of their midfield lynchpin were it not for the glaring weaknesses in the squad.

The farcical summer transfer window and lack of form and fitness has led to an over-reliance on the likes of Carrick and Robin van Persie, who has struggled with injury problems of his own and pulled out of the Netherlands’ friendlies against Japan and Colombia with groin and toe complaints.

There have been murmurings of discontent relating to Moyes’ training methods, with sessions far more intense than under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Van Persie, certainly, feels he has been overtrained, but Moyes is following his own path and could point to the form and sharpness of Wayne Rooney as evidence for its success. The England striker has described training as “so hard” but is playing as well as ever before in a United shirt.

And few could blame the new United boss for continually selecting Carrick and working him into the ground given the paucity of viable alternatives.

The Scot clearly identified the age-old midfield problem on his arrival, but the club’s executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, failed to agree deals for numerous targets including Cesc Fabregas, Thiago Alcantara and Ander Herrera.

Marouane Fellaini has been far from an instant hit since his deadline day £27.5 million arrival from Everton, Tom Cleverley has struggled for form and fitness while Anderson appears to have no long-term future at Old Trafford.

Now, Moyes will have to lean on his squad. Fellaini must show why he was made the club’s marquee summer signing while the return of Darren Fletcher - who played for the under-21s last month - would provide a welcome boost.

Ferguson was able to grind out victories in the first half of the season while regularly rotating his squad, but Moyes has not had the luxury, especially after the club's worst start to a season in 24 years.

The pressure of having to win every week, the regularity of fixtures and the reliance on certain individuals has left United’s squad stretched to breaking point by mid-November.

Carrick’s extended absence reflects more than anything on the failures of the club’s summer transfer strategy.

Someone else - most probably Fellaini - will have to step up or the summer farce could again come back to haunt United before the cornerstone of their midfield returns in the New Year.

Bale: Ronaldo is ‘incredible’ and soon I will be back to my best too

    337882_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid star Gareth Bale has voiced his admiration for team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, claiming he is proud to play alongside the "incredible" forward.

Ronaldo has been in electric form this season, with his hat-trick against Real Sociedad at the weekend taking his tally to 24 goals in just 17 games in all competitions, and Bale admits he is in awe of the 28-year-old's exploits.

"Cristiano is incredible, he scores hat-tricks every week," he told Real Madrid TV. "It's a pleasure to play with him."

Bale himself has recently recaptured some of the form which prompted Madrid to pay €100 million for his services, notching three goals and five assists in seven La Liga appearances, but the Welshman has warned rivals to expect even more over the coming weeks now he has returned to full fitness.

"The best is yet to come," he said. "I've just finished my preseason and I can still give more.

"Now I'll be able to score more goals and help the team achieve success.

"It was just a matter of time until I got to 100 per cent. Now everyone is seeing what I can do. I need to keep working and hopefully there will be more goals."

Netherlands can win the World Cup, insists Robben

    340203_heroa.jpg

Arjen Robben insists the Netherlands have the ability to win the 2014 World Cup and will be going to Brazil next summer determined to lift the trophy.

The Oranje were runners-up in the 2010 tournament after Andres Iniesta's goal won the final for Spain in South Africa, but Bayern Munich ace Robben is fully confident his side can go one better this time around.

"Our final goal is to become world champions in Brazil," the 29-year-old told reporters.

"It's a realistic target and we won't go there with the attitude to just see how far we can get.

"We must survive the group stage and if we progress, the world title is our dream."

Louis van Gaal's side find themselves in a rich vein of form after going unbeaten for 15 games stretching back over a year, but Robben has warned their run will be put to the test in upcoming friendlies against Colombia and Japan.

"These matches are not about getting points, but they're important," he stressed.

"These are two countries you can end up playing against in Brazil. Most people talk about Colombia, because they're that high on the Fifa ranking, but maybe Japan is even an more difficult opponent.

"I know a lot of players from the Bundesliga. Besides that, [Keisuke] Honda and [Shinji] Kagawa are very good players."

Robin van Persie's withdrawal from the squad means Robben is set to start the friendlies in Genk and Amsterdam as captain, and the former Chelsea winger admits he will be proud to take on the armband.

"It's an honour to be captain of your country," he added. "It's the most beautiful thing.

"I don't feel extra pressure, maybe a bit of positive pressure. I know what people are expecting from me. I won't change because of the captaincy. I will stay myself."
