Bologna 1-1 Inter: Nerazzurri held by resolute Rossoblu

    339097hp2.jpg

Inter missed the chance to move level on points with third-placed Napoli after being held to a 1-1 draw away to Bologna.

Panagiotis Kone gave the Rossoblu the lead with his third league goal of the season after 12 minutes, keeping his cool to steer an effort home having gone one-on-one with Samir Handanovic.

Inter had fortune on their side for the equaliser, which came six minutes into the second half. Jonathan's strike from inside the area was heading across goal before a touch off Frederik Sorensen diverted it past Gianluca Curci and into the net.

The home side made two changes from their 2-1 defeat against Atalanta, with Cesare Natali and Diego Perez named among the starting XI, with Inter-owned duo Diego Laxalt and Jose Crespo missing out.

Inter coach Walter Mazzarri was forced into two defensive alterations due to Andrea Ranocchia's suspension and Walter Samuel's thigh injury.

Hugo Campagnaro and Juan Jesus were the men chosen to replace them, with Mazzarri also without Cristian Chivu (foot), Mauro Icardi (hernia) and Diego Milito (thigh) due to injuries.

After a low-key start, the hosts went ahead against the run of play after 12 minutes following a succession of Inter corners.

Jonathan Cristaldo carried the ball down the right wing before calmly playing in Kone, who beat the helpless Handanovic with a neat finish from inside the penalty area.

Bologna had conceded an average of two goals a game in their opening 12 matches and Rodrigo Palacio almost capitalised on their defensive frailties two minutes later when he forced Curci into a smart save with his knees.

Palacio should have done better with his header from Juan's cross after 35 minutes as Inter got into their stride and the visitors wasted a golden opportunity to level two minutes before the break.

Both Saphir Taider and Alvaro Pereira failed to turn the ball home from tight angles after Curci failed to deal with Jonathan's teasing delivery.

Bologna were on the back foot and Fredy Guarin hit the crossbar with a free-kick with the final kick of the half.

It came as no surprise when Inter drew level six minutes into the second half courtesy of a Jonathan strike that required a decisive deflection off Sorensen's boot to beat Curci.

It was Inter's 30th league goal the season and Guarin looked set to make that 31 but he could only shoot over from inside the area after 70 minutes.

Inter piled on the pressure as they went in search of a winner and Juan struck the crossbar with a left-foot strike in stoppage time, but Bologna secured a point which leaves them a point above the relegation zone.

:(Cardiff City 2-2 Manchester United: Kim late show stuns champions

    343490hp2.jpg

Bo-Kyung Kim headed a stoppage-time equaliser as Cardiff City claimed a deserved 2-2 Premier League draw against Manchester United on Sunday.

After Wayne Rooney had petulantly kicked out at Cardiff midfielder Jordon Mutch oneight minutes - an offence referee Neil Swarbrick deemed worthy only of a yellow card - the England striker duly gave United a 15th-minute lead.

However, Fraizer Campbell, who struck the crossbar after half-time, levelled matters before David Moyes' men led again as Patrice Evra glanced home Rooney's 45th-minute corner.

But substitute Kim darted in front of the France full-back to produce a similar finish from Peter Whittingham's free kick in injury time - the midfielder's deliveries having caused United problems all afternoon.

A rapturous Cardiff City Stadium held its breath and then rejoiced as Rooney wasted a late chance to steal the points as Moyes' men finished a frantic weekend of Premier League action in sixth position, seven points behind leaders Arsenal.

Mutch was preferred in the Cardiff midfield to Aron Gunnarsson, with Campbell leading the line against his former club.

Robin van Persie's absence due to a groin injury meant that Chicharito partnered Rooney in attack for United.

The latter had an effort blocked and Mutch saw his header saved before the two came together in the first-half's early flashpoint.

And Rooney was then, somewhat inevitably, the beneficiary when an error from Cardiff defender Ben Turner resulted in the champions taking a 15th-minute lead.

Turner's loose pass was collected by a rampaging Antonio Valencia and the Ecuador winger's cross was touched on by Hernandez for Rooney to check back and find the net, via a deflection off Gary Medel.

Marouane Fellaini drew a superb save from David Marshall when he headed Adnan Januzaj’s 20th-minute free-kick goalwards but the young playmaker then erred near his own area, leading to Peter Odemwingie lashing the ball over the crossbar.

And Cardiff equalised in the 33rd minute when Whittingham and Mutch combined in midfield and the latter released Campbell for a composed finish.

The striker, Don Cowie and Whittingham all fired over for the hosts as United laboured in defence of set-pieces, although they demonstrated no such problems attacking them when Evra glanced home Rooney’s left-wing corner on the stroke of the interval.

Rooney's dead-ball deliveries continued to torment Cardiff upon the resumption and Marshall was at full stretch to deny Fellaini before beating away a header from Chris Smalling.

Malky Mackay's team responded once more and Campbell sent an audacious lob against De Gea's crossbar after Tom Cleverley had given away possession, with the rebound narrowly evading Mutch.

United might have earned some breathing space when Rooney headed Valencia’s 59th-minute cross over, while Whittingham sent a first-time effort just wide from distance six minutes later and Cleverley almost diverted a free-kick from the same player into his own net.

Danny Welbeck thrashed wastefully beyond the crossbar 10 minutes from time and the United substitute was made to rue his profligacy when Kim stole in to snatch a share of the spoils, as Cardiff edged three points clear of the relegation zone.

Rooney could still have won it when he latched on to a ball over the top but his touch was poor - and Moyes was left to rue yet more dropped points.

Livorno 0-2 Juventus: Llorente and Tevez seal comfortable win for champions

    343448hp2.jpg

A goal each from Fernando Llorente and Carlos Tevez secured a comfortable 2-0 win for Juventus against Livorno on Sunday.

The home side battled bravely for an hour until the Spanish striker volleyed home from Paul Pogba's cross, before teeing up Tevez to drill home a second with fifteen minutes left to play.

The result sends defending champions Juventus to the summit for the time being, with unbeaten Roma not playing until Monday.

Antonio Conte's men have now kept five consecutive clean sheets in the league and are two points ahead of Rudi Garcia's charges.

Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal, who had to gain Fifa clearance to play after pulling out of both of his country's recent friendlies, stepped into a makeshift Juventus defence, with Stephan Lichtsteiner, Andrea Barzagli and striker Sebastian Giovinco all out injured, while Leonardo Bonucci and Angelo Ogbonna were suspended.

Livorno made four changes to the side that lost 2-0 at Inter last time out, with Andrea Coda, Leandro Rinaudo, Leandro Greco and Innocent Emeghara coming in for Giuseppe Gemiti, Nahuel Valentini, Alfred Duncan and the suspended Paulinho.

After a quiet opening 20 minutes, Llorente had the visitors' first clear-cut opportunity, heading over the crossbar from a Simone Padoin cross.

Emeghara pulled the trigger from the edge of the penalty area at the other end five minutes later, but his effort was deflected high and wide for a corner.

Paul Pogba forced Livorno goalkeeper Francesco Bardi to tip over his crossbar on the half-hour mark with a powerful drive from 20 yards, but Juve were struggling to find their flow against a disciplined home defence.

And the hosts almost broke the deadlock three minutes later, but Emeghara's chipped attempt drifted wide of the target amid suspicions of offside.

Kwadwo Asamoah fancied his chances from distance, but the Ghanaian saw his effort pushed around the post by Bardi eight minutes before the interval.

Greco went into the referee's book after 53 minutes for simulation in the penalty area after a collision with Vidal, but replays suggested it was a harsh decision.

Juve went ahead in the 63rd minute as Llorente met a Pogba cross from the right to send a right-footed volley into the top right-hand corner of the net from the centre of the penalty area.

Tevez drilled just wide of the left-hand post as the visitors went in search of a second, but Livorno were holding firm as they clung onto the belief that they could still take something from the encounter.

However, Tevez killed off any lingering hopes that remained for the hosts as he fired home a low effort from 16 yards after good work in the area by Llorente, before Pogba struck the post in the dying minutes as Juve finished strongly.

:(Manchester City 6-0 Tottenham: Aguero puts woeful Spurs to the sword

    343426hp2.jpg

Sergio Aguero starred for Manchester City on Sunday as Manuel Pellegrini's side thrashed Tottenham 6-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

The result means City maintain their unbeaten home record this season, also launching them into the top four.

The hosts opened the scoring after only 13 seconds through Jesus Navas, with a Sandro own goal and Sergio Aguero’s close-range strike leaving them comfortably ahead at the break.

A second from Aguero was followed by Alvaro Negredo's fifth in the league this season, before another Navas goal in injury-time heaped further humiliation on Tottenham.

The win moves City into fourth place in the table - ahead of Southampton on goal difference - while Tottenham drop two places to ninth.

Andre Villas-Boas' side were barely able to test Costel Pantilimon in the City goal as a lacklustre performance added to the disappointment of their thumping defeat.

City made five changes to the side beaten by Sunderland before the international break, with Navas starting in the league for the first time since the Manchester derby in September.

Erik Lamela - one of six changes for Tottenham - was handed his first Premier League start for the visitors, with Hugo Lloris also returning to the starting line-up.

But the France international did not enjoy a good start to the game as City posted the joint-quickest goal of the Premier League campaign.

A poor clearance from Lloris went straight to Aguero 20 yards from goal and, although his shot was saved, the loose ball was met by Navas, who lofted the ball over the goalkeeper and into the far corner.

Lamela then nearly levelled as Spurs slowly began to settle into the game - but they were unable to turn their possession into goals and were caught out again in the 34th minute.

Fernandinho capitalised on another clearance from Lloris to release Samir Nasri on the left, before he in turn lifted the ball to Aguero.

The Argentinian’s effort was pushed away by Lloris but the ball dropped to Negredo, whose acrobatic follow-up found the net via deflections off Younes Kaboul and Sandro.

City extended their lead four minutes before the break as Navas fired a low cross into the six-yard box and Aguero slotted home from six yards.

And five minutes into the second half, Aguero doubled his tally with his 14th goal in 11 matches. Yaya Toure was the creator, powerfully brushing his way past Kyle Walker before rolling the ball square and leaving the Argentine the simple task of converting.

Negredo then made it five after an outrageous piece of skill saw him beat Michael Dawson on the edge of the penalty area.

The Spaniard flicked the ball through the defender's legs following a pass from Fernandinho and emphatically fired past Lloris.

Tottenham were unable to muster a reply and conceded a sixth in stoppage time when a raking long ball from substitute James Milner provided Navas with a one-on-one he coolly converted.

Jonathan: Inter should strengthen in January

    339072_heroa.jpg

Jonathan has expressed his belief that Inter should be looking to bring in new recruits during the January transfer window.

The Brazilian netted his second goal of the campaign as the Nerazzurri struggled to a 1-1 draw away at Bologna and he reckons that coach Walter Mazzarri must be allowed to delve into the market if the Milan club are to seriously challenge for a Champions league spot.

“Today we have had a lot of chances but the ball just wouldn’t go in,” the 27-year-old explained to Premium Calcio.

“With a little bit of luck we could have done it. We missed those small details that help you win.

“The road is still long, the Champions League is still possible - do not forget that there is also still the January transfer market.”

Jonathan also showed his appreciation of his new boss and the part the Inter coach has played in rejuvenating his career at San Siro after a tough time over the past two years.

“I can still improve. This year Mazzarri is giving me the confidence I needed and I thank him," he enthused.

“Immediately he has said he can count on me and that has made me feel important.”

Fredy Guarin was also keen to look at the positives from the draw too, stating that he is very happy with his displays at the moment and adding the only thing missing are those elusive goals.

“Nowadays, I’m only missing chances because the team played well; the individuality and contribution of everyone was important,” the Colombian told the Inter Channel.

“I am calm, I’ll just continue to work and be available for the team. For me, the goals will come now the team is doing well, that’s fine like this.”

Mackay proud of Cardiff display against Manchester United

    338975_heroa.jpg

Malky Mackay lavished praise on his Cardiff side after they claimed a dramatic 2-2 draw against Manchester United.

Former Red Devils striker Fraizer Campbell led the line impressively and netted an equaliser for the hosts after Wayne Rooney had given United the visitors a 15th-minute lead.

Patrice Evra headed home Rooney's corner on the stroke of half-time but Cardiff secured a point with a goal right at the death to edge three points clear of the Premier League relegation zone when Kim Bo-Kyung converted Peter Whittingham’s stoppage-time free-kick.

"I was delighted with our performance," said Mackay. "I think our first-half performance was possibly one of our most complete performances of the season so far, in the way we played and also the belief to play against a team like Manchester United – the champions – and go and play like that.

"So I'm delighted with the performance from the first minute to the last.

"It probably felt like a defeat when they scored in the last minute of the first half. I was really disappointed with that for the team because of the way we played.

"But second half, the goal at the end was thoroughly deserving of the performance overall and the chances we had."

Cardiff maintained an impressive high tempo throughout, which was reminiscent of their excellent early season victory over Manchester City, and Mackay was keen to underline that craft and guile sits alongside blood and sweat in his team's armoury.

"There's just a work ethic that we have at the club – in terms of training and in terms of playing," he said.

"I want the players who have a huge work ethic at the football club but they have to have technique and they have to have talent.

"I take the work ethic as a given. What I loved more about the team today and the way we've played this season is the belief they’ve show in their ability to play at this level and work their way up the pitch with the ball.

"That's the confidence that they're showing to compete at this level and compete well."

Mazzarri: Inter threw away two points against Bologna

    340997_heroa.jpg

Walter Mazzarri warned his Inter players against continually "throwing points away" after Sunday's 1-1 draw with Bologna.

The Nerazzurri actually fell behind at the Renato Dall’Ara when Panagiotis Kone put the hosts ahead. Jonathan equalised for the Milan outfit at the beginning of the second period but the visitors spurned numerous opportunities to complete the turnaround and in the end had to settle for just a point.

“If we want to stay at the top level, then we can’t keep throwing points away like this,” Mazzarri told Sky Sport Italia after the game.

“We created even more chances than usual. It looked like the goal was cursed and in these situations you can even lose.

“We had a series of naive errors on Bologna’s goal and it made the game an uphill struggle. We missed the seemingly impossible, but that is football and if you don’t take your chances then you don’t win.”

Despite losing yet more ground on the teams ahead of them in the race for the Scudetto, the former Napoli boss is happy with the progress his side is making, and reserved special praise for goalscorer Jonathan.

“He is playing very well. We worked with him, gave him a sense of confidence and certainty within the organisation of the team.

“We have many creative players who can push forward and score a goal, as that’s the kind of football I like.

“It is a growth in process and we have a young team, so we are still going to make mistakes that we must learn from.”

:angry:Moyes laments Manchester United set-piece frailties

    343528_heroa.jpg

Manchester United boss David Moyes bemoaned familiar set-piece failings after watching Cardiff snatch a last-gasp 2-2 draw on Sunday.

The Premier League champions twice led in the Welsh capital through Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra only for striker Fraizer Campbell to peg his former team back in the 33rd minute. Substitute Kim Bo-Kyung then headed a stoppage time equaliser from Peter Whittingham's free-kick.

Not for the first time this season, Moyes's side dropped points due to set-piece shortcomings.

"I’m disappointed," he said. "It’s similar to Southampton [a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford last month] where we had the game in our control with a minute to go and conceded from a set-piece. It's cost us, ultimately.

"I thought we could have played better. We didn’t have a lot of rhythm in the second half but this has been a tough place to come for teams.

"We’re on the back of international duty so I probably would have taken the result however it came today but I'd have liked it [the performance] to have been better, more fluent and it wasn’t to be."

The result leaves United in sixth position, seven points shy of leaders Arsenal – a particular disappointment given the rousing performance that saw off Arsene Wenger's team at Old Trafford before the international break.

United remain unbeaten in their last seven Premier League games, winning five of those, but Moyes conceded their below par start to the season has left them with little room for further slip-ups.

"We've been on a pretty good run but that’s a blow because we can't keep dropping points, two points in games when you’re where we are," he added.

"We should have won it. I know we can play better but we should have won the game."

Villas-Boas struggles to explain heavy Tottenham defeat

    339267_heroa.jpg

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas admits there is "not a lot" he can say after his side's 6-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

Jesus Navas put City in front after just 14 seconds and things went from bad to worse for a lacklustre Tottenham side as the ruthless hosts ran riot at the Etihad Stadium.

Sandro scored an own goal before the prolific Sergio Aguero helped himself to a brace. His striker partner Alvaro Negredo then got in on the act with a stunning goal of his own and Navas completed the rout with his second goal right at the death.

This was Spurs' fourth Premier League defeat this season and Villas-Boas was baffled by the heavy defeat that.

"[It was a] difficult start. Conceding after 15 seconds puts your plans in doubt, it's difficult to take," he said. "I think we had a very good reaction to the [opening] goal, that’s probably the only positive of the game we have.

"Everything went bad for us, from being one of the best defences in the country to suffering six goals, there's not a lot I can say.

"City were excellent, we were extremely poor today and we paid a big price. From the moment we suffered the fourth goal we mentally weren’t playing the game."

Tottenham now find themselves down in ninth place and face Manchester United in their next league fixture.

'Leader' Khedira would be a bitter loss for Germany - Netzer

    341775_heroa.jpg

Germany legend Gunter Netzer has claimed Joachim Low's plans next summer would be dealt a bitter blow should Sami Khedira miss the World Cup due to injury.

Khedira was forced off in Germany's recent friendly draw with Italy having suffered significant ligament damage in his right knee following a tussle with Andrea Pirlo.

The midfielder is set to miss the majority of the season due to the problem and could struggle to be ready for the tournament in Brazil next summer - and Netzer believes the Nationalelf would feel his absence keenly.

Writing for Bild, Netzer commented: "It is irresponsible to speculate on whether Khedira will play in the World Cup as the healing process after torn ligaments is different depending on individuals.

"His absence would be bitter in any case because Khedira plays not only a sporting role in Löw’s plans but also as an anchor and leader of the team."
Despite the blow of losing Khedira, Netzer believes Low has a huge depth of midfield talent to choose from should the need for replacements arise.

"He has a much larger selection of quality players than in recent years," continued Netzer. "With the Bender twins Lars and Sven, he has two midfielders that are most suitable for defensive tasks. This also applies to Phillip Lahm who at Bayern has recently been played in a defensive midfield position."

Netzer also gave his support to Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller to make the squad following his international debut against England last week at the age of 33.

"Weidenfeller is an older, strong and experienced goalkeeper, whose good character can pay off for the team. Therefore the nomination of Weidenfeller would be justified," added the Borussia Monchengladbach legend.

Arsenal striker Giroud dedicates Southampton double to his late grandfather

    343151_heroa.jpg

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud dedicated his two goals against Southampton to his late grandfather, who passed away earlier this week.

The France international opened the scoring by capatalising on a horrendous mistake from Saints' goalkeeper Artur Boruc, before beating the Pole with a well-taken second-half penalty.

After the game he revealed how his recently passed grandfather was the inspiration behind his match-winning performance, which keeps Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.

"I wanted to give a thought to my grandfather, who died three days ago," Giroud told Telefoot.

"It was a pleasure to score. I wanted to dedicate the goals to him. It's been a while since I had scored. It feels good, especially as we remain first."

The former Montpellier striker also commented on France's World Cup qualification earlier in the week, as les Bleus overcame a two-goal deficit against Ukraine to book their place at Brazil 2014.

"I've seen guys who had tears in their eyes. A reversal like that, that makes a team whole. It really has the feeling of accomplishment," he added.

"The feeling of having done the good thing and having reconciled with the French people... We were like kids and very proud."

    Bale: Ronaldo deserves Ballon d'Or

    342798_heroa.jpg

Gareth Bale has backed Cristiano Ronaldo to win the Ballon d'Or and labelled his Real Madrid team-mate "the best player in the world".

Ronaldo grabbed his 25th goal for Madrid this season in a 5-0 win over Almeria on Saturday.

The Portuguese has also been in prolific form for his country, with a hat-trick against Sweden last week securing a place at the World Cup finals for Paulo Bento's side.

"For me, he is the best player in the world and I don't think anyone is near him," Bale said of Ronaldo.

"He deserves that award (the Ballon d'Or). The goals and the performances he has put in, especially when you think of the pressure he is under, for Portugal the other day, it shows what a true, true world-class player he is.

"Since I've been here he's been nothing short of unbelievable. The amount of goals he's scored is just mind-blowing this season."

Bale moved to Madrid during the close-season for a world-record fee and is grateful for the assistance Ronaldo has provided.

"There is no rivalry at all. We get on very well," added the Welshman. "He's helped me out a lot on and off the pitch.

"Since I've been here he's had nothing bad to say to me; he's just given me encouragement every game, given me confidence.

"He has been sharing his first experiences when he first came here and they have really helped me along. He's been absolutely brilliant.

"We're enjoying playing together and I think that the goals and assists show that we're playing well together. There's still a lot more to come from us both and hopefully we can have a successful season by doing that."

Moyes open to January arrivals at Manchester United

    339401_heroa.jpg

David Moyes has revealed that Manchester United will attempt to sign players in January as he looks to build a squad capable of challenging for honours.

The former Everton boss was heavily criticised for the lack of headway made in the summer transfer window, with the club failing in their public pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, as well as missing out on the likes of Leighton Baines and Fabio Coentrao.

Moyes has, however, opened the door to potential January arrivals, providing they are the right type of player. "The thing about this club is that we always think long term," he told reporters.

"I am thinking how we are going to have a side that is going to be competing in the Champions League and right at the top end of the Premier League for four or five years.

"It has to be a continual building process here. We will continue to look to do that. In any one window you couldn't change it all around anyway. It takes maybe two, three or four windows to do that.

"To talk about January and make it sound as if that would be the place where everything is cured and any problems would be resolved would be wrong.

"It is not me saying we are not going to buy anyone in January,” he continued. “We are going to try to if the opportunity is there, but they have to fit the right criteria. If not, we will have to wait until the summer and see if we can get them then."
