Juventus 3-1 Copenhagen: Vidal hits hat-trick in vital victory for Bianconeri

    344592hp2.jpg

Arturo Vidal scored a hat-trick as Juventus moved from the bottom of Champions League Group B to second place courtesy of a 3-1 win over Copenhagen.

The Chilean converted two penalties either side of Olof Mellberg's equaliser before nodding in a third to take his tally to five goals in the competition this season.

The result, which eliminates Copenhagen, leaves Juventus second in Group B, two points clear of Galatasaray, whom they visit in their final game with just a point needed to progress to the knockout stages.

Vidal's first penalty came shortly before the half-hour mark when Lars Jacobsen handled, but the hosts were momentarily stunned in the 56th minute when Mellberg levelled the scores against his former club.

Midfielder Vidal claimed his second from the spot five minutes later following a foul by Mellberg before completing his hat-trick with a header two minutes later.

The hosts made one change from the weekend as Leonardo Bonucci replaced Claudio Marchisio, while Claudemir and Christian Bolanos came into the Copenhagen side in place of Cesar Santin and Igor Vetokele, respectively.

Paul Pogba wasted the first chance of the game in the seventh minute, firing a weak shot at Johan Wiland from the edge of the box after beating the offside trap.

In the 29th minute, Juventus were gifted the chance to break the deadlock when Jacobsen inexplicably handled a cross while under pressure from Pogba and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Vidal stepped up and slammed the penalty low to Wiland's right for his third successful spot-kick in this year's competition.

Juve were dominant as the half wore on, Pogba rippling the side-netting from the edge of the area four minutes before the break.

Copenhagen equalised 11 minutes into the second half when Mellberg hooked the ball home from 10 yards after the Juve defence failed to clear a long throw from the left.

Parity lasted just five minutes, however, Mellberg's evening turning sour as he hauled down Fernando Llorente inside the area, Vidal once again sending the ball low into the bottom left-hand corner.

Vidal put some daylight between the two sides two minutes later, hanging in the air at the far post to meet Pogba's left-wing cross and loop a header into the far corner.

The remainder of the game proved uneventful with Juventus happy to sit back and soak up pressure to claim their first win of the campaign at a crucial time.

Real Madrid 4-1 Galatasaray: Hosts make light of Ramos red card to clinch top spot

    344616hp2.jpg

Real Madrid shrugged off Sergio Ramos' first-half red card to secure a thumping 4-1 win over Galatasaray at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Spain defender received his marching orders with the scores locked at 0-0 for tugging back Umut Bulut, but Carlo Ancelotti's side soon raced into the lead thanks to a Gareth Bale free kick.

Bulut soon leveled the scores, but Alvaro Arbeloa put the hosts back ahead just after the break, before goals from Angel Di Maria and Isco sealed a resounding victory that clinched top spot in Champions league Group B.

Madrid were without the injured Cristiano Ronaldo, who was nonetheless the centre of attention in the build-up as the fans showed their support for the forward's bid for this year's Ballon d'Or by wearing face masks of the Portuguese superstar.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti arested Xabi Alonso, Karim Benzema and Alvaro Morata, with Jese Rodriguez selected up front and Casemiro handed his debut in the competition.

Opposite number Roberto Mancini, who was not in charge when the Turkish side were humbled 6-1 in the reverse fixture, left Burak Yilmaz and Wesley Sneijder on the bench.

Madrid should have taken the lead inside the opening four minutes when Bale was sent racing clear by Isco, but the Welshman side-footed wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.

The home side threatened again six minutes later as Marcelo cut in from the left and tried to pick out Rodriguez, but Selcuk Inan's desperate challenge denied the Spaniard a shooting opportunity.

Inan also had the visitors' first sight of goal but flashed an ambitious long-range shot over the bar from a tight angle in a rare Galatasaray attack.

But the momentum threatened to shift when Ramos, who was the last man, was given his marching orders after making the slightest of contact with a goal-bound Bulut.

Jese had to make way in the tactical reshuffle as Nacho was introduced, but Bale put the 10 men ahead eight minutes before half-time with a dipping 25-yard free-kick that deceived Eray Iscan.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Umut collected Didier Drogba's pass before coolly slotting past Iker Casillas two minutes later.

Real went back ahead six minutes after the restart, Di Maria swinging in a low cross from the left to find the most unlikely of scorers in Arbeloa, who tucked home with surprising confidence amid suspicions of offside.

Arbeloa's spell in the spotlight did not end there and he was booked for diving in the 55th minute, before turning provider for Di Maria with 63 minutes gone.

Casillas produced a stunning save from Drogba's header before Isco added the fourth with a clever turn and finish in the box, and there there was no way back for Mancini's men, who must now beat Juventus in the final group game to reach the knockout stages.

Shakhtar Donetsk 4-0 Real Sociedad: Douglas Costa double sends Spaniards out of Europe

    344634hp2.jpg

A brilliant second-half double from Douglas Costa saw Shakhtar Donetsk seal a 4-0 over Real Sociedad to move the hosts into second in the group and send the Spaniards out of Europe. The Brazilian rifled home an unstoppable shot after a quick counterattack just past the hour mark, after compatriots Luiz Adriano and Alex Teixeira had given the hosts a two-goal lead, before heading in a late second.

The win saw the Ukrainian champions move above Bayer Leverkusen and into second place in the group behind Manchester United, whome they face at Old Trafford on December 4.

Both coaches made four changes from the weekend, with Andriy Pyatov returning in goal for Shakhtar after missing Saturday’s 4-0 win over Sevastopol.

The hosts came into the game having not tasted a home defeat since December 2012, and they once again set about asserting their authority.

It took just over 10 minutes for Shakhtar to carve out the first clear-cut opportunity, Teixeira denied by the shins of Sociedad goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

It was a sign of things to come, with the next five minutes seeing Douglas Costa and Bernard both wasting decent opportunities.

Sociedad had chances of their own within the first 15 minutes, their most notable coming after some slick one-touch passing, which ended with Chori Castro unleashing a tame shot straight at Pyatov.

But it was the Ukrainian side that did much of the probing in the first half and they were nearly ahead 10 minutes before the break when Darijo Srna's free kick cannoned back off the crossbar.

They had more luck two minutes later, though, when Douglas Costa's pinpoint pass found Adriano at the near post, with the latter making no mistake from close range.

Douglas Costa forced Bravo into a fine save late in the half, while Inigo Martinez saw an effort deflected over by team-mate Antoine Griezmann, as Sociedad looked for a foothold in the game.

Shakhtar began the second half with a similar degree of urgency and doubled their lead just before the first five minutes of the half.

A mistake by Martinez was pounced on by Teixeira, who burst into the box before powering past Bravo. Griezmann almost halved the deficit just before the hour mark, but Pyatov tipped his fierce effort onto the post.

However, the win was assured for the hosts 10 minutes later when some neat interplay found Douglas Costa on the left-hand side of the box and the Brazilian then curled a sublime effort into the top corner.

Douglas Costa added a fourth in the dying minutes, getting on the end of a teasing cross from substitute Taison to guide a smart header into the net and wrap up a great night for the hosts.

Manchester City 4-2 Viktoria Plzen: Dzeko & Negredo seal late victory

    344622hp2.jpg

Manchester City kept their faint hopes of winning their Champions League group alive by beating Viktoria Plzen 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium.

Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko struck in the last 12 minutes from time as the Premier League outfit made hard work of seeing off the Czech champions on Wednesday and they could still win the group with a decisive victory at Bayern Munich in December.

In-form striker Sergio Aguero put Manuel Pellegrini's side in front from the penalty spot with his 15th goal in his last 12 games after Frantisek Rajtoral was harshly judged to have handled in the area. However, the Czechs were level at the break courtesy of an impressive strike from Tomas Horava.

Samir Nasri put City back in front but Plzen levelled for a second time in a frantic encounter when Stanislav Tecl fired home.

Negredo gave his side the lead for a third time when he finished from close range and Dzeko sealed the points at the death as the hosts took their tally to 22 goals in their last four home games.

Joe Hart made his first City start for a month as Pellegrini made seven changes to the side which hammered Tottenham 6-0 on Sunday while Roman Hubnik came in at left-back for Plzen to replace David Limbersky, who was out with a stomach problem.

Nasri looked in the mood early on, rattling the crossbar with a vicious right-footed strike after 13 minutes.

Plzen were not content to sit and soak up pressure, though, and could have taken a surprise lead after 26 minutes when Rajtoral raced into the box and flashed the ball across the face of goal.

The defender's disappointment at spurning that opportunity was compounded 12 minutes before the break, when he was harshly deemed to have handled in the area and Aguero sent Matus Kozacik the wrong way from the spot.

Plzen gave as good they got in the first half and were deservedly level two minutes before the interval when Horava rounded off a slick move with a right-footed strike into the far corner that gave Hart no chance.

Jesus Navas replaced Aguero at the break and they were almost back in front when Fernandinho's header was tipped over by Kozacik but the goalkeeper was beaten after 65 minutes when Yaya Toure made an immediate impact after coming on when he laid the ball off for Navas, whose cross was volleyed home left-footed by an unmarked Nasri.

Hart produced an outstanding reflex save to tip over Daniel Kolar's long-range drive a minute later but Tecl capitalised on some hesitant City defending to equalise with a measured right-foot finish from inside the area with 20 minutes to go.

There was still time for a final twist and Negredo provided it as he converted a Navas cross before Dzeko had the final say by heading home an inviting James Milner cross at the back post to seal the points.

:love:Bayer Leverkusen 0-5 Manchester United: Rooney & Kagawa shine as Red Devils qualify in style

    344585hp2.jpg

Manchester United sealed their spot in the Champions League's last 16 with a convincing 5-0 win at Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday.

The Premier League champions made a bright start at the BayArena and took a deserved lead in the 22nd minute when Wayne Rooney's cross was converted by Antonio Valencia at the far post.

They doubled their advantage just eight minutes later as Rooney's free kick was nodded into his own net by Leverkusen defender Emir Spahic.

Stefan Reinartz headed onto the post after the break for Leverkusen but the visitors added a third when Jonny Evans tapped home in the 65th minute.

Chris Smalling scored a fourth with 13 minutes left, firing Rooney's lobbed ball into an open net, before Nani scored an exquisite late chip to consign Leverkusen to third in Group A with one match to play.

Leverkusen forward Sidney Sam – a major part of the club's best-ever start to a Bundesliga season – missed out with a thigh injury, as Reinartz and Spahic came in for the hosts. United boss David Moyes, meanwhile, made four changes from the side that drew 2-2 at Cardiff City on Sunday, with Shinji Kagawa, Nani, Ryan Giggs and Phil Jones all drafted in.

The Germans immediately sat back and allowed their opponents to force the tempo. It suited the English side, who quickly settled into their stride, with Kagawa impressing.

Nani had the game's first real chance in the 16th minute when he curled over after a clever Giggs ball, while Spahic nodded wide at the other end.

Stefan Kiessling – the Bundesliga's top scorer last term with 25 goals – strolled past Rio Ferdinand for the hosts and prepared to shoot, with only a last-ditch block from Evans saving the day.

And from the resulting counterattack, United scored, as a move that involved Kagawa, Giggs and Rooney ended with the latter's ball being turned home by Valencia.

Buoyed by their opener, United pressed again and they had another goal on the half-hour mark when Spahic gave Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno no chance with a flicked header after he had been put under pressure by Smalling.

Leverkusen continued to lose the midfield battle and, although Reinartz went close in the 60th minute, heading a corner onto the post, Spahic saw his follow-up well saved by United goalkeeper David de Gea.

Evans more or less sealed the victory five minutes later, pouncing quickly after Rooney's close-range effort had been parried by Leno following a corner.

There was still time for a fourth, as Rooney chipped the onrushing Leno and saw Smalling convert, while only a smart save from the Leverkusen keeper stopped Jones getting on the scoresheet himself.

Nani's delightful chip near the end of the 90 minutes saw United finish with five goals as they sealed their knockout spot in fine style.

PSG 2-1 Olympiakos: Cavani fires Parisiens into last 16

    335576hp2.jpg

Ten-man Paris Saint-Germain qualified for the Champions League knockout stages courtesy of a 2-1 win over Olympiakos on Wednesday.

The French champions will progress to the next round as Group C winners after maintaining their unbeaten start to the competition at the Parc des Princes.

PSG deservedly went ahead after just seven minutes, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic marking his 100th Champions League appearance with a clinical close-range finish.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men when Marco Verratti was booked for a second time early in the second half and the Greek side thought they had gained a point when Kostas Manolas levelled 10 minutes from time.

However, Edinson Cavani grabbed the winner in the final minute, slotting past Roberto Jimenez to secure Laurent Blanc's men the win.

Alex retained his place alongside Thiago Silva in the centre of defence for PSG, while Cavani, Maxwell and Gregory van der Wiel all returned to the starting XI after being rested for the 3-0 win against Reims.

Jeremy Menez and Lucas Moura had to be content with spots on the bench, despite both scoring at the Stade Auguste Delaune II on Saturday.

Dimitris Siovas returned from a knee injury for Olympiakos, while Konstantinos Mitroglou was named in the starting XI, having been rested for Saturday's 4-1 win over Panthrakikos, as he looked to add to his 17 goals this season in all competitions.

The Ligue 1 leaders were ahead after seven minutes courtesy of Ibrahimovic, as he equalled the record amount of goals in a Champions League group stage with his eighth of the campaign.

The ball was spread wide to Van der Wiel on the right, who crossed for the Sweden international to sidefoot into the roof of the net.

Buoyed by their early opener, PSG dominated possession but struggled to create further chances, while Mitroglou got on the end of a Joel Campbell ball to force a smart stop from Salvatore Sirigu.

PSG almost doubled their lead after half an hour when Maxwell's cutback from the left by-line evaded Cavani inside the area.

Mitroglou then again tested Sirigu from inside the area after fortunately finding himself through on goal following a Thiago slide tackle.

Jimenez was called on to deny Cavani's fierce effort six minutes before the break, while Ezequiel Lavezzi fired past Jimenez's left-hand post with the last chance of the half.

Verratti was shown a second yellow card within the first minute of the second half, as he was cautioned for pulling back Vladimir Weiss after his first yellow had been given for a handball after 29 minutes.

Ibrahimovic hit a vicious free-kick on target five minutes later before Jose Holebas attempted to replicate him at the other end - only for his long-range effort to fly harmlessly over Sirigu's crossbar.

Jimenez was called on to deny substitute Adrien Rabiot 18 minutes from time, getting down well to his left and tipping the strike wide.

Manolas was on hand to bury a loose ball in the area after Sirigu had parried an Alejandro Dominguez header, but it was not enough as Cavani prodded home Rabiot's throughball in the 90th minute to deny Olympiakos qualification.

CSKA Moscow 1-3 Bayern Munich: Gotze wondergoal helps Bavarians break Barca record

    344516hp2.jpg

Bayern Munich broke Barcelona's record of Champions League wins by beating CSKA Moscow 3-1 for their 10th victory in a row on Wednesday.

Arjen Robben's 10th goal of the season set the European champions on their way as the snow came down in the Russian capital and Mario Gotze doubled their lead early in the second half.

Keisuke Honda pulled a goal back from the penalty spot after spurning two golden opportunities after the break, but Thomas Muller responded with a spot kick at the other end to ensure Bayern surpassed the record of nine Champions League victories in a row set by Barca in 2002-03.

Pep Guardiola's side will be confirmed as Group D winners if Manchester City fail to beat Viktoria Plzen later on Tuesday but, even if the Premier League side claim all three points, the German champions will only need a point against Manuel Pellegrini's side next month to ensure they claim top spot.

Victory also marks a club record sixth consecutive away win in Europe for Bayern, while CSKA are still in the hunt for a place in the Europa League ahead of their final game against Plzen.

Bayern striker Mario Mandzukic was ruled out with a calf problem, so Gotze started in attack. CSKA were without in-form striker Seydou Doumbia due to injury and Ahmed Musa came in to replace him.

Guardiola warned his players to adapt quickly to the weather conditions and Bayern did just that to edge in front after 16 minutes.

Muller was the architect, racing away down the left and cutting the ball back into the path of the onrushing Robben, who made beat Igor Akinfeev with a clinical left-foot finish inside the near post.

Honda tried to be too clever when he attempted to round Manuel Neuer two minutes into the second half, but the German goalkeeper read his drag-back and smothered the ball.

Things went from bad to worse for the Japan international when a cross from the right fell nicely for him six yards out, but he fluffed his lines with the goal gaping.

And he was made to pay for those misses 11 minutes into the second half, when Gotze set off on a mazy run into the penalty and beat Akinfeev with a delightful left-foot finish.

CSKA were given a lifeline five minutes later, when Dante was harshly adjudged to have handled in the area and Honda this time kept his nerve to send Neuer the wrong way from the spot.

However, Bayern were awarded a spot kick of their own after 65 minutes when Georgi Schennikov upended Robben and Muller restored their two-goal advantage. Zoran Tosic hit the crossbar nine minutes from time, but Bayern never looked in danger of surrendering their lead.

Anderlecht 2-3 Benfica: Last-gasp Rodrigo goal saves Aguias

    310404hp2.jpg

Benfica salvaged their hopes of reaching the last 16 of the Champions League with a stoppage-time winner in a dramatic 3-2 win over Anderlecht.

Olympiakos went into the Group B clash three points ahead of the third-placed Portuguese, but the Greeks' late defeat at Paris Saint-Germain allowed the Eagles to move level with them on points, albeit behind them on the head-to-head record.

Jorge Jesus' men trailed to Chancel Mbemba's 18th-minute opener but hit back through Nemanja Matic 11 minutes before the break, with Mbemba's own goal handing the visitors the advantage early in the second half.

Massimo Bruno struck with an excellent finish 14 minutes from time to move Anderlecht level, only for substitute Rodrigo to provide a dramatic twist with a last-gasp winner.

After a quiet start, the first chance fell to Anderlecht in the 17th minute. Aleksandar Mitrovic cut a pass back to the edge of the area for Bruno, but Artur tipped it over the bar.

The goalkeeper could do nothing to prevent his side falling behind a minute later, though. Fabrice N'Sakala lofted a pass into the area from deep for Mbemba and after his first touch ricocheted back off Luisao, the Congolese defender slotted under Artur.

Mitrovic saw a goal disallowed for offside just before the half-hour mark and Benfica made the most of it four minutes later.

Matic nodded Enzo Perez's left-wing free kick past Silvio Proto, but Cheikhou Kouyate nearly restored the hosts' lead with the next attack as he headed a cross narrowly over.

Benfica needed only seven minutes to take the lead in the second half. Nicolas Gaitan latched on to a throughball in the area and, after producing a clever turn, he hit a low shot that was deflected in by Mbemba.

After taking the lead, Jesus' side became more inclined to hit Anderlecht on the counterattack and Lima went close to scoring a third as he stroked a shot just over with the outside of his foot following Perez's cutback.

Bruno grabbed the equaliser from a narrow angle in the 76th minute, but Rodrigo had the last word, applying a cool finish after racing clear in stoppage-time.

Benfica now await the visit of PSG in their final, decisive group game.

Ibrahimovic: I don't need the Ballon d'Or to know I'm the best

    344565_heroa.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic claims that he does not need to win the Ballon d'Or to know that he is the best player in the world.

The Swede's neat finish just seven minutes into Tuesday's 2-1 victory over Olympiakos at the Parc des Princes was his eighth goal in this season's Champions League group stage and equalled the tournament record held by Ruud van Nistelrooy, Hernan Crespo, Filippo Inzaghi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, even though he is now in an excellent position to take outright possession of the record by netting in his side's final outing against Benfica, the 32-year-old insists that he is unconcerned with individual accolades - including the Ballon d'Or.

"It's not something I think about and it is something that is not important for me," Ibrahimovic told reporters.

"I do not need to win this trophy to know I am the best."

PSG guaranteed themselves top spot in Group C thanks to Edinson Cavani's late goal against the Greek champions and Ibrahimovic says he is now looking forward to the last 16.

"Our aim was to get out of the group stage and we have done that," the striker explained.

"We must now wait for the draw to see who we play but, until then, we will train hard and be ready for the next match."

Mancini angered by Galatasaray collapse at Real Madrid

    344681_heroa.jpg

Galatasaray coach Roberto Mancini was at a loss to explain his side's second-half capitulation away to Real Madrid.

The Turkish champions had gone in all-square at half-time, with Umut Bulut having cancelled out Gareth Bale's scorching free-kick, but a second half collapse saw Los Blancos Power home to an ultimately emphatic 4-1 win.

The result was made all the more exasperating for Mancini by the fact that Madrid defender Sergio Ramos had been dismissed midway through the opening 45 minutes.

"We were nearly perfect in the first half," the 49-year-old Italian told reporters after the game in the Spanish capital.

"I really don't know what happened in the second half; I need to talk to my players."

"If you make mistakes against a side like Real Madrid then they will punish you. They have very strong and talented players."

"We have defensive problems, we need to work harder because we can't win with big mistakes like these."

However, despite dropping in thrid position in Group B, two points behind Juventus, Galatasaray can still advance to the knockout stages with a home win over the Bianconeri on the final matchday.

"One point was not enough for us because Juventus won," he said, in reference to the Italian champions' 3-1 victory over Copenhagen in Turin.

"Now we will prepare for that match. It will be decisive and we need big support from our fans in that game."
