:(Moyes unsure over Van Persie return

    346736_heroa.jpg

Manchester United remain in the dark over when striker Robin van Persie will return to action, according to manager David Moyes.

Van Persie has not featured for the Premier League champions since scoring in the 1-0 win over former club Arsenal at Old Trafford on November 10 due to a groin strain.

Moyes confirmed there is no return date set for the Netherlands international but explained the injury was not a cause for major concern.

"I don't know (when Robin will return). We've been trying to get him back for a few weeks," the Scot said."But he is not ready yet. It's his groin. It's a sore groin injury and nothing desperately serious."

Van Persie's fellow striker Wayne Rooney will also miss Satuday's visit of Newcastle United having collected his fifth booking of the season during Wednesday's loss to Everton.

That capped off a tough night for Moyes, who tasted defeat against the club he left to join United in the summer."I'm disappointed to lose, we missed some opportunities and Everton took theirs. It's a sore one against your old team," he added.

"We have a long way to go, we will need to play some great football and win an awful lot of games."

Wenger & Mourinho insist Manchester United remain in title race

    347247_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho both insist Manchester United remain in the title race despite the Premier League champions falling to a 1-0 defeat at home to Everton on Wednesday evening.

Bryan Oviedo’s 86th-minute strike secured the win for Roberto Martinez’s men which has left David Moyes’ side 12 points behind league leaders Arsenal with 14 games played.

The Gunners registered a 2-0 victory over Hull City following goals in each half from Nicklas Bendtner and Mesut Ozil but Wenger maintains it would be wrong to write off United at this stage of the season.

“It’s still early,” said the Frenchman.

“It’s a surprising defeat but it’s still early. We’ve seen it before - 12 points on us - but of course we just have to keep winning to have a chance and not worry too much about the others.”

Chelsea remain second in the table, four points behind Arsenal, following their 4-3 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

And when asked if United remain in contention to retain their title, Mourinho replied: “It's difficult but with Manchester United everything is possible.”

Moyes, whose side have won just three out of their seven league games at home this term, concedes United are in need of consistency if they are to mount a challenge in the Premier League.

"We will need to play some great football and win an awful lot of games in the run-in if we are going to be in there and around it come the end of the season."

UEFABrazil are World Cup favourites, insists Low

    341100_heroa.jpg

Germany coach Joachim Low has stressed that hosts Brazil are the favourites to win next summer's World Cup.

The Selecao last won the competition in 2002 and Low believes home-advantage gives them a good chance of winning their sixth World Cup in history, although he has made it clear that Luiz Felipe Scolari's men face stiff competition for the trophy.

"Brazil are the biggest favourites for me. Their strength and energy on home soil gives them something extra," Low told ZDF.

"The team is more important than individual class and playing at home is a big advantage for Brazil.

"However, Argentina have become quite strong again, too, while Colombia are one of the best in the world as well.

"And of course there are teams like Spain, Italy and Netherlands. Belgium are one of the dark-horses, while Japan are Asia's strongest team."

Morata laughs off Real Madrid exit rumours

    346689_heroa.jpg

Alvaro Morata has insisted that he has no intention of leaving Real Madrid amid rumours linking him with Arsenal.

The Premier League leaders were allegedly keen to sign the Spain Under-21 international on loan until the end of the 2013-14 campaign.

However, Morata has made it clear that a winter move is not an option for him.

"I’m happy here and I feel that Carlo Ancelotti, [Zinedine] Zidane and all of the technical staff have a lot of confidence in me. I’m still only 21 and I want to continue with Madrid for a long time," the striker told reporters.

"Every player always wants to play and the boss has shown that he has faith in me – he has brought me on during difficult games and I am happy to have been able to repay him for the trust he has demonstrated in my abilities.

"I am very happy where I am and I hope to spend many more years with Madrid. Right now, the team is amazing and I think we are currently one of the most dangerous sides in Europe."

Morata's current contract with the Santiago Bernabeu side runs until June 2015.

Bendtner is important to Arsenal - Arteta

    347159_heroa.jpg

Nicklas Bendtner still has an important role to play in Arsenal's Premier League title charge, according to team-mate Mikel Arteta.

Bendtner scored inside two minutes on his first Gunners start in three years as Arsene Wenger's men comfortably saw off Hull City at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.

The Dane's improving form is a boost to Wenger's hopes of lessening the scoring burden on Olivier Giroud, as Arteta admits Arsenal will have to rotate their squad to stay top of the table.

"He deserves it," Arteta told reporters of Bendtner's goal. "He has been working really hard. He joined us in pre-season and was rewarded. He got the chance and got a very good goal.

"The good thing is we can still rotate the squad and keep winning. The squad players can contribute and help the team be successful. Every member of the squad is important and Nicklas is no different.

"He is an Arsenal player and while he is here, he is 100 per cent here. I don't think he will be thinking of doing anything different because he likes playing here.

"I think it [the competition for places] is great. Everybody has to be on their toes and everybody feels important. You are going to need everyone if you are going to achieve something.

"The Christmas period is going to be massively important but with the quality, the ambition and the togetherness that we have I think we are in a good position."

Arsenal's next opponents are Manchester United's conquerors Everton, and Arteta knows his former club will present a formidable challenge.

"They're having a great season," he added. "They've got some great results against the top teams which isn't easy. We are going to face a very difficult team for sure.

"I think Everton deserve to be up there and beating United is going to be massively important for them, it is going to boost their confidence.

"I know Roberto Martínez well and he is the type of manager that wants to take risks and make his players play good football so hopefully we can watch a nice game on Sunday."

:sorry:Moyes hindered by Manchester United chiefs in transfer window, says Jagielka

    347247_heroa.jpg

Everton captain Phil Jagielka says he feels sorry for David Moyes and believes the Manchester United manager lacked support from the club in the summer transfer window.

United slipped to a 1-0 defeat at home to Roberto Martinez’s side on Wednesday evening, which has left the Premier League champions 12 points behind leaders Arsenal in the table.

Moyes has faced criticism for Marouane Fellaini's £27.5 million arrival from Goodison following the Belgian's subdued displays, but Jagielka insists the Old Trafford hierarchy, who failed in their attempts to sign Leighton Baines, Ander Herrera, Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara, are to blame.

“I have a lot of time and a lot of respect for David Moyes," said Jagielka.

"I do feel sorry for him. The fixture list wasn't that kind initially. The transfers in the summer, the people who were making those decisions didn't help him out one bit.

"It is nowhere near a big problem but the pressure was always going to be high. From being at Everton, where the pressure was not so big initially, he could then grow into the season.

“You can't grow into the season at Manchester United. You need to come out firing on all cylinders when you look at how Arsenal have started and Chelsea and teams like that. You can't give them too much of a lead.”

Jagielka backs Moyes improve United’s form following the club’s fourth defeat of the season but insists the Scot must be backed to bring in his own signings who can improve the squad.

"He will come under pressure but I am sure he knew that once he took the job,” said the defender.

“He wasn't going to get a quiet life at Manchester United. It was a fantastic opportunity for him.

“It proved what a great job he had done at Everton. I am sure he will roll his sleeves up and get the guys moving in the right direction.

"I am more than sure he will get Manchester United where they need to be. He just needs that little bit more time. But sometimes, time seems a hard thing to get when you are at that top level.

“He is a football man. He has some good people around him.He has some great players in the squad. He just needs to add a few more players that he wants week in, week out.

"Once he gets that sorted and he gets more of his team, rather than a team he has been given, that is the acid test for him, once he gets the players in that he wants."

Golden boy Pogba must work hard, says Conte

    347504_heroa.jpg

Juventus coach Antonio Conte has urged Paul Pogba to keep working hard after winning the prestigious Golden Boy award.

The French midfielder won the prize earlier this week following a string of impressive performances for club and country, including four goals in 14 Serie A outings this season.
However, Conte says the former Manchester United youngster has the potential to reach a higher standard and has advised him to continue on his current trajectory.

"I’m happy for Paul Pogba's Golden Boy award," Conte said at a press conference. "He’s got all the potential to reach the very top.

"In the space of 18 months, Pogba has developed in an exceptional way. Credit to him. As a club we've always believed in Pogba and he knows he has to keep his head down and continue to work hard."

Juventus take on Bologna on Friday and Conte is concentrating on leading his side to maximum points.

"Bologna will be a difficult game. We need to think exclusively about that match and put anything else to the back of our minds," he continued.

"I will look to play the most appropriate team available to me at this moment, with one objective in mind - winning.

"There are many factors that will come into play when I choose my team tomorrow. I hope they give me the response I'm looking for. It’s an important moment of the season and we’ll remain focused on our task."

Real Madrid prepare sensational January move for Suarez

    337470_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid are preparing a sensational January move for Luis Suarez, Goal understands.

The Spanish giants have made the in-form Liverpool striker their No.1 marquee target for 2014 and will pull out all the stops to get him.

Goal understands that Real are willing to pay up to €72 million to land Suarez.

Liverpool rate Suarez in the same bracket as Gareth Bale, who joined Real for a world record €100m last summer, but the Uruguayan turns 27 in January and is unlikely to ever be able to command a higher fee than next year.

The Merseysiders resisted a £40m-plus-£1 bid from Arsenal for their prize asset in July and Liverpool would instantly dismiss a fresh attempt to sign him from a club they regard as rivals.

Arsene Wenger remains a huge admirer of Suarez but, as reported by Goal in November, Arsenal's pursuit of the forward is now "dead in the water".

However, a transfer overseas to a club of Real's prestige would be regarded as more palatable to Liverpool and their supporters.

The Spanish club prefer to do their principal transfer business in the summer window but signed Emmanuel Adebayor on a six-month loan deal in January 2011 when he was out of favour at Manchester City.

The only senior striker currently on Real's books, following the €37m sale of Gonzalo Higuain in July, is Karim Benzema. Suarez has the added attraction of being available to play in the Champions League knockout stages in the new year due to Liverpool not playing in European competition.

Sources have told Goal that Real will begin laying the foundations for a concerted push for Suarez in January, although the likelihood remains that they are more likely to get him next summer.

Suarez has been in outstanding form since returning to the Liverpool side following a 10-match domestic ban. The 26-year-old has scored 12 goals in 10 matches this season, including four in Liverpool's 5-1 midweek win over Norwich City.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers claimed on Wednesday that Suarez is the "happiest" he has ever been at Anfield and the player himself has said that he wants to help the Merseyside club clinch a top-four league finish before deciding his future.

However, Suarez went public with his desire to move to the Bernabeu last summer and is likely to have his head turned by strong interest from the club.

Germany are definite World Cup contenders - Matthaus

    328615_heroa.jpg

Lothar Matthaus says Germany are "definitely" a contender for Brazil 2014, while he dismissed concerns about the tournament's logistics.

Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world and the lead-up to next year's World Cup has included plenty of discussion about how teams will handle the travel between venues, as well as the heat and humidity expected.

But Matthaus, who has plenty of experience playing in major finals, says Brazil does not throw up any new problems compared to previous tournaments.

"I've played at five World Cups including one in the US where the distances between the stadiums were also big," the former German midfielder said.

"One World Cup in Mexico where we had games around midday and the temperature was at 45 degrees.

"Obviously you have to prepare yourself for that. That's why you have a medical team and also a team that helps to find the right headquarters, taking everything into consideration.

"It's hard for every team, for every nation."

Matthaus believes Germany have the quality to claim their fourth World Cup in Brazil, but insists a team needs more than just good players to lift the trophy at the Maracana next year.

"I'm also hoping for a title for my country after 24 years," the 52-year-old said.

"The German national team has the quality, they showed that in previous tournaments. They also qualified in an impressive fashion.

"But in a World Cup, as I said, many factors play a role. Our team is always being prepared in the best way possible but, as I said, there are always lots of surprises.

"Every team wants to win against the so-called favourites, but if the team performs the way they have done in the last few years then they are definite contenders."

Casillas' poor form led to axe, explains Karanka

    346447_heroa.jpg

Former Real Madrid assistant coach Aitor Karanka has explained that Jose Mourinho dropped Iker Casillas because his performances were inadequate.

The Spain international, 32, lost his starting berth to Diego Lopez in 2012-13, with his supposedly poor relationship with Mourinho cited as one of the reasons for his demotion to the bench.

However, Karanka has now stressed that Casillas was dropped from the starting XI because they were unhappy with his displays, while admitting that his relationship with the goalkeeper has deteriorated as a result of last season's events.

"We thought a lot about his situation because we knew he was not just any player. We thought he should be performing better," he told La Sexta.

"I don’t know if Iker understood why he was benched. The same thing happened with [Fernando] Hierro, [Manuel] Sanchis and Raul. I think that he must have understood the situation.

"We were friends. We don’t have that relationship now because I left the club, and in all honesty, during those three years, especially towards the end, our relationship wasn’t great."

Karanka left Madrid at the end of the 2012-13 campaign and is currently in charge of Middlesbrough.

Moyes open to January additions at Manchester United

    347247_heroa.jpg

David Moyes says he is open to strengthening his Manchester United squad during the January transfer window.

The Scot missed out on a number of high-profile targets during the summer, including Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, before managing to secure Marouane Fellaini on deadline day.

Everton captain Phil Jagielka believes his former boss was not adequately supported by the Old Trafford hierarchy during the close-season, and Moyes wants to go in search of new talent again next month.

"The club has always thought about strengthening," Moyes told reporters. "You do that every transfer window. We will try and make that happen."

United lost 1-0 at home to Everton on Wednesday as they lost further ground on table-toppers Arsenal - the gap now 12 points - and will have to do without the suspended Wayne Rooney for this weekend's visit of Newcastle, while Shinji Kagawa is also expected to miss the visit of Alan Pardew's side.

"Shinji has a sickness bug," Moyes revealed on the eve of the game at Old Trafford. "We need to see how he is on Saturday but he wasn't too good after the game [against Everton on Wednesday]."

Cartagena 1-4 Barcelona: Pedro double sets Blaugrana on course for easy win

    347871hp2.jpg

Barcelona put one foot in the last 16 of the Copa del Rey with a 4-1 dismantling of Cartagena in the first leg of their round of 32 tie at Estadio Cartagonova on Friday.

The Catalans fell behind to Fernando's shock opener for the Segunda Division B side, but responded with two goals from Pedro either side of a Cesc Fabregas strike, before Jean Dongou rounded off matters with the fourth in injury time.

With four away goals to overcome, the Murcian minnows will now be playing for little more than pride during the second leg, which takes place in two weeks' time at Camp Nou.

The likes of Alex Song, Sergi Roberto and Marc Bartra were all handed rare starts, but it was otherwise a strong XI named by Gerardo Martino.

However, matters did not appear to be going according to plan when Fernando beat the defence and Jose Pinto with far too much ease to open the scoring with just over a quarter of an hour played.

However, with less than 10 minutes to go until the break, Pedro levelled for the visitors with an angled strike from Cesc’s through ball.

The former Arsenal skipper then took matters into his own hands just before half-time when he smacked home Adriano's cross to put Barca into a lead that they would never relinquish.

Pedro bagged his second with 15 minutes remaining, racing onto Alexis Sanchez's defence-splitting pass before beating Cartegena keeper Limones to the ball.

The forward nearly completed his hat-trick at the death, but struck the post, only for Dongou to stroke home the rebound to wrap up the victory with his first goal for the club - and the first by an African graduate of La Masia.

:love:Van Persie back in full Manchester United training

    332533_heroa.jpg

Robin van Persie completed his first full training session in a month for Manchester United on Friday but remains a major doubt for the champions' lunchtime clash with Newcastle, Goal has learned.

The Dutchman has not featured for the Premier League champions since scoring in the 1-0 win over former club Arsenal at Old Trafford on November 10 due to a groin strain.

Van Persie will meet with club medical staff on Saturday morning to discover how his groin has reacted to participating in full contact training for the first time in four weeks.

David Moyes was guarded over when Van Persie could potentially return for the champions on Friday, and did not disclose that his striker had taken part in the session at Carrington.

"I don't know [when Robin will return]," he said. "We've been trying to get him back for a few weeks.

"But he is not ready yet. It's his groin. It's a sore groin injury and nothing desperately serious.

"We've got a few injuries. They are all making progress, some have a chance and some don't."

United have been frustrated in their attempts to rehabilitate Van Persie back to match fitness, with club sources admitting to Goal that it is a case of "managing" his injury as best as possible without doing further damage.

Moyes said that Van Persie had a chance of facing Everton ahead of the champions' damaging 1-0 defeat to the Toffees on Wednesday night but Goal understands that he is not yet fully match fit.

The forward's return to full training is a small boost for Moyes, though the Scot is likely to be forced to start against Newcastle without his two leading strikers, with Wayne Rooney suspended for the visit of Alan Pardew's side after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season against Everton.
