Aston Villa 1-2 Arsenal: Gunners survive late barrage to go top

    358861hp2.jpg

Arsenal survived a late scare to secure a 2-1 triumph against Aston Villa and return to the top of the Premier League.

Arsene Wenger's men had slipped to third thanks to victories for Chelsea and Manchester City over the weekend but first-half strikes from Jack Wilshere and Olivier Giroud saw Arsenal back on top, with the London club now unbeaten at Villa Park in their last 15 league visits.Villa had held firm until two goals in 17 seconds handedthe Gunners the initiative. First Wilshere capped a flowing move with a neat finish on 34 minutes, before he turned provider for Frenchman Giroud to side-foot past Brad Guzan.

The hosts improved somewhat after the break and were rewarded with 15 minutes remaining when Christian Benteke, who scored twice in Villa's opening-day 3-1 triumph at the Emirates, headed home his first Premier League goal since September 14.

Arsenal's winning run in the league now stretches to four matches, while Villa remain in 11th position.Ron Vlaar and Gabriel Agbonlahor were among five players restored to Villa's starting line-up from the 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Sheffield United, while Arsenal welcomed Giroud back from an ankle problem.

The visitors made a bright start and almost went ahead as early as the fifth minute when Giroud flashed a header wide from Bacary Sagna's teasing cross.

Paul Lambert's men were dealt a blow as Nathan Baker had to exit play after 15 minutes when Serge Gnabry's shot struck him in the face, with Leandro Bacuna coming on.Villa looked more threatening when play resumed, with Karim El Ahmadi scooping over the crossbar from Fabian Delph's centre. But the home side's evening unravelled as Arsenal scored two goals in quick succession.

A slick opening led to Nacho Monreal picking out Wilshere on the edge of the area and the England international moved into the area before calmly slotting home.
Wilshere was involved in the second, chipping a pass into the path of Giroud, who took one touch before steering his effort beyond Guzan.

Villa improved after the break and Bacuna should have done better when he shot straight at Wojciech Szczesny from the edge of the area.Arsenal remained comfortable in possession, however, and Cazorla tested Guzan with a driven left-footed effort on the hour mark.

The away side came even closer on 72 minutes with a bending strike from Giroud curling just wide of the left-hand post.Villa ensured a nervy ending by halving the arrears with quarter of an hour remaining when Benteke dived to meet Matthew Lowton's superb cross from the right-hand side and end an 11-match league run without a goal.

Wenger introduced Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain late on, marking the winger's return from the knee injury suffered on the opening day against Villa, as Arsenal held on despite late pressure.

Inter 1-1 Chievo: Paloschi and Nagatomo strike early as Nerazzurri labour to draw

    358854hp2.jpg

Inter made it three games without a win since the turn of the year after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Chievo on Monday.

Alberto Paloschi handed the visitors a surprise lead after Boukary Drame's cross caused havoc for Juan Jesus and Hugo Campagnaro, allowing the forward to rifle home into the top corner.

Inter restored parity within five minutes, however, as Yuto Nagatomo swept home Ricky Alvarez's low cross, but Walter Mazzarri's side failed to find a winner, meaning they only scrape back into Serie A's top five ahead of Hellas Verona.
The draw lifts Chievo a place in the table and means they are now a point clear of the relegation zone at the halfway stage.

Both sides made two changes from their previous league outings, with Inter welcoming back Mateo Kovacic in place of the suspended Fredy Guarin and the visitors opting for Paloschi in attack instead of Sergio Pellissier.

Despite only taking one point from a possible 12 the visitors started well and broke the deadlock early on.A move down the left ended with Campagnaro and Juan Jesus colliding in the Inter defence, the loose ball rolled to Paloschi inside the penalty area and he fired high above Samir Handanovic and into the back of the net from a tight angle.

Inter hit back almost immediately with a well-worked goal that Nagatomo converted from close range.Alvarez teased Perparim Hetemaj on the right before delivering a low cross into the six-yard box that the Japan international swept home.

Mazzarri's side should have gone into the break ahead but they saw another Nagatomo effort disallowed for offside, while Rodrigo Palacio and Alvarez both failed to force Christian Puggioni into a save with their chances.Inter started the second half positively but were wasteful in attack as Kovacic, Alvarez and Rodrigo Palacio all spurned chances to put them ahead.

The latter came closest with a scooped effort following Alvarez's through ball, but the 31-year-old saw his chance loop onto the top of the goal with Puggioni untroubled.Chievo did create an opportunity of their own in the 71st minute as Cyril Thereau and Paloschi broke on the counterattack. The French striker was played in by his team-mate but dragged his shot well wide of Handanovic's goal.

Inter continued to press for a winner but failed to find a way past their resilient hosts, meaning they extend their winless run in 2014.

Arsenal sweat on injuries but Wenger hails 'big win'

    339349_heroa.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hailed a "big win" for his side after beating Aston Villa 2-1 in the Premier League on Monday.

The Villans shocked the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium with a win on the opening day of the season but, despite Christian Benteke's second-half strike, the north Londoners' quickfire double from Jack Wilshere and Olivier Giroud saw to it that there would be no repeat.

Though acknowledging that perhaps his side were too quick to shut up shop after the break and settle for what they had before Villa's reply, Wenger noted that the hosts' tactical changes played a part as well.

"It was a big win for us," he told reporters. "The first half was about playing our game with the speed of our passing and controlling the game. The second half was more about fighting - I felt it was down to, first of all, a different style from Villa, who played three through the middle and a very direct game.

"Maybe we were a bit too cautious just to keep the 2-0 but it was about fighting and our defenders kept us in the game. Maybe we thought we'd keep control of the game and keep it at 2-0 but we lost a bit of incisiveness in our game and that desire to score more.

"[It was ] a nervous finish but, overall, you have to say that Villa did fight until the end and were committed for every single ball and you have to give them credit for that."

There was some concern on the injury front for Arsenal when Tomas Rosicky, himself on as a substitute, had to be withdrawn after appearing to be caught by the elbow of Gabriel Agbonlahor, while Nacho Monreal is set for a scan on Tuesday to determine if the left-back broke his metatarsal.

"Rosicky has a bad nose," Wenger confirmed. "I don't know is it broken or not, it looks bad. Honestly I didn't see the elbow, I have to watch it again. [Rosicky] told me that he got the elbow but he himself doesn't know if he did it on purpose.
"I think Monreal is an accident but we have to check his metatarsal [on Tuesday] morning because he got kicked on the top of the laces."

Wilshere's goal and assist within the space of a minute proved the catalyst for the win and the Gunners boss was delighted to see the midfielder on his way back to his best.

"He has his change of pace back; his game is about that and his penetration because he's not only a passer but he's a guy who is incisive with the ball," Wenger enthused.

"It's his strengths so, from that, you need to be at the top of your game physically. You see it when you know well the players well in training. In the last games you see that he's coming back to his best."

Garcia: All my Roma players deserve Ballon d'Or

    358489_heroa.jpg

Roma boss Rudi Garcia has paid tribute to his players for their performances so far in 2013-14, suggesting they all deserve Ballon d'Or recognition.

The former Lille coach was in Zurich to see Cristiano Ronaldo crowned the best individual player of 2013 and was keen to take the opportunity to recognise the displays of his own players since he took charge in the summer.

He told reporters: "It is a pleasure to be here and talk with so many great people from the world of football.

"I would give my Roma players a Ballon d'Or each because they are all having a great campaign."

Nineteen games into the season, Roma have suffered just one defeat – to Juventus – and have amassed an impressive tally of 44 points in Serie A.

The champions' form, though, means they still trail Antonio Conte's side by eight points at the top of the table but Garcia insists the title race is still alive.

He continued: "The Scudetto race is not over. We need to make sure we get our results, winning as much as possible, then we will see what Juventus can do.

"For now they are eight points in front and are stronger but there is still a long way to go."

Roma are back in action on Saturday with a home game against struggling Livorno.

Mazzarri: Inter fans must be patient

    358899_heroa.jpg

Inter coach Walter Mazzarri has warned supporters to be patient with the side after their 1-1 draw with Chievo on Monday extended their winless run.

The Nerazzurri have failed to win any of their three games in 2014 and were forced to settle for a point against Chievo after Yuto Nagatomo equalised Alberto Paloschi's early goal.

New owner Erick Thohir earlier stressed that fans should not expect any stellar arrivals in January as he looks to rebuild the squad and Mazzarri echoed the Indonesians' plea for patience.

"I have to compliment the new president, as few would say those things openly. I hope the fans have patience. I already knew all this, but I was pleased we are all on the same page and are working on this project," Mazzarri told Sky Sport Italia.

"First of all, to buy someone we need to sell first. A coach tries to do his best with the squad at his disposal. I work on Ricky Alvarez and Mateo Kovacic to ensure they cover each other when changing position. All this means growing up, gaining experience and learning the tactical moves."

Looking at his side's draw with Chievo, which sees them sneak back into the top five in Serie A, Mazzarri made it clear he was more than happy with the team's endeavour.

"I could not have asked for more from my team. We knew Chievo were organised in defence and physically strong, but we had a great chance with Rodrigo Palacio," he told continued.

"If we had taken the lead, then it would've been a more entertaining match with more open space. We know that to play good football it takes two teams, but Chievo came here to defend and hope for a mistake to hit us on the counterattack.

"I changed system tonight, as I wanted to help the lads find some more spaces with a 3-4-3 system. We did create some scoring opportunities, but missed the final ball and Mateo Kovacic got between the lines but didn't get the right pass.

"Sometimes the ball just doesn't go in and your opponents score with every shot. You just have to keep working. The boys believe in themselves, we just need a little more luck, which is crucial in sport.

"For various reasons we have fewer points than we deserve to have. If it's our destiny we'll get them back before the end of the season, but if not then we'll just have to see where we end up."

AC Milan parted company with Massimiliano Allegri earlier on Monday after a disappointing first half to the season and Mazzarri stressed that supporters should rememebr the success Allegri brought to the club during his tenure.

"The coach always pays. A coach going towards the end of his contract is always going to have every result weighed heavily on his shoulders. I just hope people remember all the good work Allegri did, as they forget so quickly in football," he added.

Messi focused on Barcelona after Ballon d'Or disappointment, says Zubizarreta

    358760_heroa.jpg

Lionel Messi will keep on focusing on the trophies that matter after losing his Fifa Ballon d'Or crown, according to Barcelona director of football Andoni Zubizarreta.

The 26-year-old was the four-time defending champion of the award for the world's greatest footballer before Cristiano Ronaldo's 2013 triumph on Monday in Zurich.

But Zubizarreta insists that the setback will not affect Messi one bit as he continues to strive for further honours with the Blaugrana and Argentina.

"Messi already knows what it feels like to be here, not only from when he won, but also the times before that," said the former Barca goalkeeper following the Ballon d'Or Gala at the Kongresshaus in Switzerland. "He is aware this is just a prize and he already said that what matters is what is still to come.

"We are still in January and a football player always has the stimulation of the daily competition. Followers have the stimulation to keep winning games, to be on top with your team, going ahead in the Champions League knockouts, the World Cup, the Copa del Rey... The combination of all of that is what brings you here."

And the 52-year-old has no doubt that the Argentine will reach his very best once more following an injury-hit 2013, with team prizes dominating his focus entirely.

"Messi has always kept that character and that competitiveness. We have the warranty for that. Let's not start from now with the race for the 2014 Ballon d'Or," he added.

Heynckes: Ribery was worthy of Ballon d'Or win

    358805_heroa.jpg

Franck Ribery should have won the Fifa Ballon d'Or for 2013, according to his former Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes.

Heynckes, who retired in the summer after leading die Roten to an unprecedented treble, was awarded the Coach of the Year award at Monday's event in Zurich.

Yet he was quick to pay tribute to Ribery, who lost out to Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo for the night's main award.

"It is quite difficult to talk about Ribery," the 68-year-old told reporters after the ceremony. "He won the treble with Bayern Munich and he was a key player. He also deserved the prize.

"There were other players in our Bayern side of last season that deserved to be nominated too. Players such as Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger or Thomas Muller could also have been here, but it is only a three-man shortlist so it is impossible to include all of them."

The former West Germany international was also asked for his opinion on his countrymen's hopes of lifting this summer's World Cup, and he believes they are among a small group of potential victors in Brazil.

"Germany have a very young team ahead of the World Cup, but I think Germany, Argentina, Brazil and Spain are the favourites to win the title. But bearing history in mind, it is going to be tough for a European national team to succeed in South America."

The former Athletic Bilbao, Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen boss was a popular winner of the Coach of the Year award, and he admitted afterwards that he was pleased to end his career on such a high.

"It is a unique experience," he exclaimed. "Now I am going to enjoy my spare time with my family and my dog!"

Emotional Pele awarded Fifa Ballon d'Or Prix d'Honneur

    358837_heroa.jpg

Pele struggled to hold back the tears after being awarded the first ever Fifa Ballon d'Or Prix d'Honneur.

The former Brazil international was ineligible to win the Ballon d'Or during his playing days as the original prize was reserved for European footballers, but Pele was acknowledged by the world governing body with the honorary award in the Ballon d'Or gala on Monday.Pele scored 1,281 goals in his career, and is the only man to lift three World Cup titles, having triumphed in 1958, 1962 and 1970.

Speaking at the awards ceremony in Zurich, the 73-year-old thanked his team-mates for his glittering playing career and admitted he was delighted to finally get his hands on the trophy."I promised to my family that I would not cry but I am emotional," he said. "First of all I have to thank God for giving me the health to play so many years.

"Of course I did not play alone. When we talk about my friends people remember the players but we don't have to forget the guy who cleaned the shoes, the masseur - I had a lot of good people on my side. I have to share with them all this trophy.

"I got so many trophies and prizes but I was jealous because all of those guys who got the Ballon d'Or, which I couldn't get because I didn't play in Europe. Now I thank God that I can complete my trophies at home."Pele was named Fifa Player of the Century in 2000, and part of the Fifa World Cup Dream Team two years later.

He later presented the 2013 Ballon d'Or trophy to Cristiano Ronaldo, who beat Lionel Messi and Franck Ribery to the prize.

Ronaldo: I deserved the Ballon d'Or

    341771_heroa.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has won the Puskas Award for his memorable overhead kick for Sweden against England in an international friendly.

The Paris Saint-Germain star scored every goal to defeat the Three Lions 4-2 in the first match at the Friends Arena in Solna back in November 2012.

The last was a spectacular bicycle kick to seal the victory and was enough to see off competition from Nemanja Matic's goal for Benfica against Porto in the Primeira Liga last term and Neymar's strike for Brazil against Japan.

The Puskas Award was first awarded back in 2009 for Cristiano Ronaldo's goal against Porto and has since been given to the likes of Hamit Altintop, Neymar and Miroslav Stoch.

Ibrahimovic, 31, was previously nominated for the 2011 edition of the prize for his strike for AC Milan against Lecce in Serie A but lost out to Barcelona's young Brazilian attacker, then playing for Santos.

The former Inter and Juventus striker was also named as in the FIFPro World Xi, forming an all-star front three with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Bayern & Barca dominate FIFPro XI

Champions League winners Bayern Munich and Liga champions Barcelona dominate the FIFPro XI for 2013, with Ballon d'Or nominees Franck Ribery and Lionel Messi making the cut.

Manuel Neuer is the first of the Bavarians' treble winners to be named, taking the place in goal previously dominated by Iker Casillas.

Roten skipper Philipp Lahm and Barca stalwart Dani Alves are the two full-backs, with Thiago Silva and Sergio Ramos of Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid respectively at the heart of defence.

Ribery forms part of a three-man midfield with Blaugrana duo Xavi and Andres Iniesta, both key figures in the team who coasted to Primera Division glory last term.

The final member of the Barca contingent is Messi, who takes his place on the right of a three-man attack also starring Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who fired Paris Saint-Germain to their first Ligue 1 title in 19 years last term.

Injured Nasri confirms he will be out for eight weeks

    358476_heroa.jpg

Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri has confirmed he will be out of action for eight weeks after being stretchered off during the club's 2-0 win over Newcastle at St James' Park.

The Frenchman took to Twitter to reveal his news, saying: "Thank you everyone for your kind words and overwhelming support, I suppose its kind of good news that i will be out around eight weeks."

Nasri was hurt in a challenge with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and manager Manuel Pellegrini admitted after the game that it looked like a severe injury and claimed the Newcastle defender should have been sent off for the foul.

“It's very serious because I think it was a very unfair kick from the player of Newcastle it was directly red card. I don’t understand why he [Yanga-Mbiwa] wasn’t sent off," he told reporters.

“Samir Nasri has a problem with his medial ligaments, we’ll see tomorrow how serious, but I don’t think it’s a nice thing, I think it’s serious.”

City went on to win the game 2-0 thanks to goals from Edin Dzeko and Alvaro Negredo with the victory sending them back to the top of the table.

However, the goal was not without incident with Newcastle having a goal controversially ruled out for offside and manager Alan Pardew forced to apologise for Manuel Pellegrini for his comments directed at the Chilean.

The news will come as a blow to the league-leaders, however, with Nasri the only player in the squad to have featured in every Premier League game for City so far this season.

Inter fans should not expect major signings, says Thohir

    346095_heroa.jpg

Inter president Erick Thohir has warned fans not to expect big name arrivals at the club this month.

The Nerazzurri currently sit sixth in Serie A and have lost their last two games following the Christmas break against Lazio and Udinese.

Despite their dip in form, Thohir - who completed his takeover at the club towards the end of 2013 - has indicated Inter will need to sell players before they are in a position to add to the squad.

Speaking to Indonesian media, he said: "We do not want to do as other clubs who proclaim purchases and do not conclude [them]. Before we buy we have to sell.

"In January we will have to review the team. There are roles where we have many players and others in which there are not. We are looking for players at positions that are lacking."

Inter crashed out of the Coppa Italia on Thursday, losing 1-0 to Udinese, after losing by the same scoreline to Lazio just three days earlier in the league.

However, Thohir remained composed on the club's future.

"The project is very clear, there is no doubt about this. We want to build a healthy, competitive and interesting club," he added.

"This is a year of transition. It is the year zero, it is the last year of a fantastic era.

"The market consists of a series of opportunities. The fans may not expect bombs, but if we have the chance we will make something interesting."

Inter could move into fifth place in the league with a win over Chievo on Monday night.
