Diego Costa close to Ballon d'Or, claims Simeone

    336672_heroa.jpg

Diego Simeone believes Diego Costa is close to becoming the the best player in the world.

The Atletico Madrid striker has been in outstanding form this season, scoring 19 times in 20 La Liga games so far and is second top-scorer in Spain, with only Cristiano Ronaldo having scored more."Diego Costa is not far from the Ballon d'Or," the 43-year-old Atleti boss told Mundo Deportivo.

"Things are not so bad for him."Costa has endured a goal drought of late, having failed to score in his previous six games, but Simeone insists that he is unconcerned by his current struggles.

"Hopefully he'll get a goal because we've needed it of late," he continued.
"However, Falcao was like that if I'm not mistaken and passed a similar time without scoring."

Atleti play Rayo Vallecano on Sunday and sit third in La Liga with 51 points from 20 games, two behind Real Madrid, who have played a game more.

Robben slams 'ridiculous' rumours of Guardiola rift

    332243_heroa.jpg

Arjen Robben has brushed off rumours of dispute between him and Pep Guardiola during Bayern Munich's victory over Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Netherlands forward came on as a 79th-minute substitute for Xherdan Shaqiri during die Roten's 2-0 victory at Borussia Park on Friday evening but a terse exchange arose between player and trainer during his short time on the pitch.

Guardiola appeared furious with Robben's failure to get back into position quickly enough, bawling at the 30-year-old, who in turn shot an angry look towards the Spaniard in the dugout.

However, when quizzed about the apparent discord, Robben insisted suggestions of any rift with his coach are completely unfounded.

"There was absolutely no dispute," the Dutchman retorted when asked about the incident by Bild am Sonntag.

    "This is ridiculous."

Robben, who has scored six times and contributed three assists in the Bundesliga this season, was also involved in a row with Guardiola when he refused to take a penalty against Viktoria Plzen in October.

Bayern sit top of the Bundesliga with 47 points from 17 games, 10 clear of Bayer Leverkusen in second.

Messi's father dismisses PSG transfer rumours

    360036_heroa.jpg

Lionel Messi will not be leaving Barcelona to join Paris Saint-Germain or any other club in the near future, his father and agent has insisted.

The Paris outfit have been reported to be preparing a world-record €250 million bid this summer in order to bring the Blaugrana star to Ligue 1.

However, Jorge Messi denied suggestions that les Rouge-et-Bleu could succeed in prising the forward away from Camp Nou and stressed that his son would not be leaving.

"I have heard about those rumours and I don't know where they came from," the star's father told L'Equipewhen questioned about PSG's reported interest. "There is nothing so far. Lionel is a Barcelona player, where he is under contract for several years [until 2018].
"It is an honour to know PSG could think about him. But I repeat it is not a subject we want to think about now.

"The only reality is his contract with Barca. I don't know what we are talking about when people talk about a transfer here or there. We don't want to think about anything, neither Paris nor any other team."

Messi's name has been synonymous with Barcelona's success in recent year, having scored 313 times in 400 games for the Catalans since joining their academy at the age of 13.Though Messi senior was happy to pledge his son's short term future to the club, he did concede that football is unpredictable.

"Can I assure Messi will play at Barca next season? He is under contract. In football, you know we never know what can happen."I don't know what will be tomorrow made of. Only God knows."

Barcelona and Messi face Malaga on Sunday after slipping behind Real Madrid, who moved to top spot in La Liga after a 2-0 win over Granada on Saturday having played a game more.

:shocked:Moyes not expecting further January deals after Mata capture

    356948_heroa.jpg

David Moyes says Juan Mata is likely to be the only new arrival at Manchester United in January, despite working hard to add to his squad.

Mata completed his club-record £37.1 million move from Chelsea on Saturday, and United have been actively seeking further additions, opening preliminary talks with Southampton for Luke Shaw and scouting Bayern Munich duo Toni Kroos and Dante.

But Moyes does not expect to add to his side any further this month, though will keep searching for ways to strengthen the squad he inherited from Sir Alex Ferguson, and admits they may have to wait until the end of the season to bolster their ranks.

"I don't think we'll have any more in January," the United boss told the club's official website after confirming the Mata deal.

"I'm still working on it and looking to do things – we know exactly what we'd like to do and if it changes in the last week, which sometimes it can do, then we'll try.

"I hope it will be the first of some new signings that will arrive, but more likely in the summer."

United have struggled in the Premier League this season and are 14 points adrift of leaders Arsenal after seven defeats in their opening 22 games.

Mata is the first piece of the jigsaw for Moyes, and he has vowed to put a side together that is capable of moving them back up the table and delivering the style of football the club's fans have become accustomed to.

"I want to build an exciting team, that's always the way I've wanted my football to be played and I've not known it any other way," he added.

"I want to win and give the supporters something to shout about because I've not done that often enough.

"What I will say is that this is the first of many more to come in time. I'm looking forward to Juan being the start of it."

    Chelsea confirm Salah signing

    362160_heroa.jpg

Chelsea have signed Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah from Basel.

The Stamford Bridge club looked to reinforce their attacking options after it became clear Juan Mata was set on a move to Manchester United, and have moved for the Egypt international after his impressive performances for the Swiss outfit.

The 21-year-old, who has signed a five-and-a-half year deal, was the subject of heavy interest from Liverpool before the Blues forced through a deal in midweek.

Salah told Chelsea's official website: "I'm very happy to sign for such a big club. I hope I can make the Chelsea supporters happy."

Salah has shone for Basel in the Champions League this season, and scored a late chipped winner against the Blues in November to hand his side a 1-0 victory over Mourinho's men.

With Mata completing his £37.1 million move to Old Trafford on Saturday evening after failing to fit into Mourinho's first-team plans this season, replacement Salah will offer the Portuguese coach width and penetration from the flanks.Liverpool boss Rodgers bemoaned losing out to Chelsea for the winger's signature, telling talkSPORT: "It is one where the agent of the player and the clubs were talking but if the deal can't be done, the deal can't be done."

Wilfried Zaha, Fabio and Kenwyne Jones set to join Cardiff

    ZahaJones_3072865.jpg

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is close to bolstering his Cardiff squad with three new signings.Manchester United duo Wilfried Zaha and Fabio joined Stoke's Kenwyne Jones at St George's Park on Sunday to undergo medicals, ahead of proposed moves to south Wales.

It is understood that England U21 winger Zaha will join the Bluebirds on loan for the remainder of the season for a fee in the region of £1.5million, having made just four appearances for United this term - one of those in the Community Shield win over Wigan.

Brazilian full-back Fabio was also putting the finishing touches to his deal, though that switch - for an undisclosed fee - will be permanent.Meanwhile, Jones will boost Cardiff as part of a swap deal that will see Nigeria international Peter Odemwingie move the other way to the Britannia.

Potters boss Mark Hughes confirmed the swap was imminent after his side's 1-0 defeat at Chelsea, saying: "It should go through tomorrow and will be concluded then. We're pleased to get Peter in."He's a good Premiership player with experience at this level, a goal in him and a bit of pace - which we need to add to the squad. (I'm) pleased to add him."

Jones was fined and dropped earlier this month after sending a text message to Hughes the night before Stoke's 5-3 home Premier League defeat to Liverpool on January 12 saying he was not available to play
    .
Speaking earlier to Sky Sports News upon arrival at St George's Park, the striker said: "Of course (I'm excited about the move)."It's playing football so I'm really happy to go and try and help Cardiff City stay in the Premier League."

:cool:Mata pays tribute to Chelsea fans in heartfelt open letter

    277627_heroa.jpg

New Manchester United signing Juan Mata has penned a moving and classy farewell letter to the fans of former club Chelsea after bidding farewell to Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Read it in full below...

    Hi everyone,

As you can imagine this is a very important day in my life, and with these lines I would like to express the memories and emotions that come to me as I write.

This letter is written from my heart, and first of all I would like to say that I will never forget all the affection given to me by the Chelsea fans. From the very first day until the last.
With your support and affection I have grown up as a player and I have had an amazing time both on and off the pitch. I will always feel the gratitude towards you. Always. No words are enough to give back all the things I have received.

There has been plenty of good moments: the FA Cup, my first trophy as a Blue; the immense happiness of winning titles for the first time in the club’s history, such as that magical Champions League night in Munich and the Europa League.

On the other hand, I have experienced some complicated situations from a personal point of view, mainly during the last six months. Every message I got through the social media, every nice word you have said to me on the street, and of course, your support in the stadium, has made me feel incredibly proud of the Chelsea fans; you deserve a team like the one you’ve got, with so many fantastic players.

I won’t forget the faith you put in me when I was given the player of the year award the last two seasons. I feel really proud and I will never forget those nights.

Thank you so much for the way you have treated me, you have been unbelievable. I hope you understand that after going through a complicated and, for me, new situation in the last few months, I believe this is the best choice in order to carry on with my football career and to keep enjoying this sport.
Before last summer, my intention was to stay here for a long time; as long as the club wanted me to, and to keep winning trophies for Chelsea FC. This is how happy I was in the club and in the city. However, as you all know, things changed after the preseason. From feeling like an important player, I started to experience some difficult situations and I felt unable to help the team to the extent that I wanted and was used to. Obviously, I fully respect the circumstances.

Football is a team sport and it’s not easy to play regularly in such a good squad. In sports you may win or lose, but the most important thing is to give everything. I hope you know and feel that I have always done so. In every game, in every training session, without exception. I have always tried my best for the club.

I would like to emphasise the affection, admiration and respect that I’ve had for my former team mates since the first day. I want to thank the captains for their help and understanding at all times. They made me feel comfortable when I arrived and they have supported me throughout the difficult times this season.

I thank all my former team mates for these two and a half years and I wish them the best, personally and professionally, for the future. Of course I have been closer to some of them, but the most important thing is that my years in Chelsea have left me with great friends. Friends forever, football rivalries aside.

I also want to highlight the day-to-day job of every member of the Chelsea staff: medical team, kit men, staff at Cobham and Stamford Bridge, media and marketing department, Chelsea TV team… All of them are very important in making this club a great one. Thank you for your treatment and your efforts to make the life of the players easier.

Furthermore, thanks to every manager I have had the pleasure to work with during my time here. They have all been a big help for my progression as a player. I have always respected their decisions, whatever they were; they made me more mature and a stronger person. You learn from everything, and certain situations make you think about other team mates who are coping with similar situations more regularly.

Thank you Andre for giving me the opportunity to join Chelsea FC. Without your support, none of this would have happened. To Robbie and Rafa, for their unlimited trust in me. And to Jose, for making me a stronger player, because in difficult moments, I have learnt to remain positive and to keep working hard.

Lastly, I want to thank the Club, and in particular its owner, Roman Abramovich, for trusting me and making an important investment when signing me. Also for their understanding regarding my situation over the last months. I’m very glad to have been part of the squad that made his and our dream come true: winning the Champions League on that unforgettable night in Munich. Additionally, my years in Chelsea have been profitable for the club, which I’m very pleased about.

I want to make clear that the stage that now comes to an end has been extremely important for me, personally and professionally. Although many of you, like myself, never thought this moment would come, this is football and a new chapter is about to begin.

I would have liked to say good bye to all of you in the stadium, or in a press conference, but it has not been possible. I’m sure I will be able to do it in the future, because that is what you deserve.

Evidently, today is a day of mixed feelings, remembering the past and looking forward to the future and what it has to bring. I look forward to being happy and to enjoy what I like the most: play football.

I will never forget my time in Chelsea and the affection I take with me, I will keep forever.

I wish you the best. A big hug to all of you.

    THANK YOU so much,
    Juan

Monaco 2-0 Olympique de Marseille: Germain & Riviere fill in for Falcao as Ranieri's men close gap to PSG

    363256hp2.jpg

Valere Germain and Emmanuel Riviere stepped up to the mark in the absence of Radamel Falcao as Monaco closed to within three points of Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain with a comfortable 2-0 win over Olympique de Marseille on Sunday night.

Germain opened the scoring just before the interval with a composed finish before strike partner Riviere smashed home 12 minutes into the second half to seal victory for the hosts.

Monaco's staff and players may have still been reeling from the news that star striker Falcao will miss the rest of the season with a crucial ligament injury but it certainly didn't show in early exchanges as they set about attempting to take full advantage of PSG's surprise draw at Guingamp the day before.

Indeed, Les Rouge et Blanc made a blistering start to the game and really could have been a couple of goals to the good before the close of the opening quarter.

However, Steve Mandanda was in inspired form for the visitors. The Marseille goalkeeper was called into action for the first time after less than 60 seconds of action when Andrea Raggi picked out Emmanuel Riviere unmarked in the area with a wonderfully measured ball from the right wing. Unfortunately for the hosts, though, Mandanda pulled off a spectacular, one-handed save to deny the Monaco forward.

The France international pulled off another terrific stop moments later, after the ball had rolled invitingly into the path of Raggi on the edge of the Marseille box.

Monaco, though, really should have taken the lead 18 minutes in when some dreadful clumsy defending from Souleymane Diawara allowed Riviere to charge through on goal. However, while the 23-year-old attacker sent Mandanda the wrong way, he dragged his shot wide of the left post.

It seemed as if Monaco, for all their dominance, were going to go in scoreless at the break only for Germain to make the breakthrough on 41 minutes, just when Marseille were actually starting to gain a foothold in the game.

Joao Moutinho was the creator, picking out Germain, who escaped the attention of the hapless Diawara before coolly slotting the ball home to give the home side a deserved lead.

Monaco doubled their advantage just over 10 minutes into the second half when Riviere, who appeared to have been ever so slightly offside, controlled a brilliant ball from Geoffrey Kondogbia with the outside of his right foot before smashing it into the roof of the net.

Marseille had a wonderfully opportunity to immediately halve their defecit when Andre-Pierre Gignac barged his way into the area, but his effort was brilliantly blocked by Danijel Subasic.

The visitors never looked remotely capable of turning the game around thereafter, as Monaco coasted to a win that drags them right back into the title race.

Barcelona 3-0 Malaga: Blaugrana end turbulent week on top of the table

    363264hp2.jpg

Barcelona returned to the summit of La Liga with an ultimately straightforward 3-0 win over Malaga at Camp Nou on Sunday night.

The Catalan giants dropped to third in the table after Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid won earlier in the weekend, but reclaimed their place at the top of the table with a thoroughly convincing performance.

After consecutive Liga draws against Atletico and Levante – the first time Barca went two league games without winning since May 2011 – Gerardo Martino's side dominated the first half and took the lead through Gerard Pique in the 40th minute, his second goal in as many matches.

Barca would have led by more if it were not for the brilliance of Malaga goalkeeper Willy Caballero, but goals from Pedro and Alexis Sanchez in the first 20 minutes of the second half sealed the result.

Lionel Messi did not score, as his league scoring drought extended to 120 days, but new president Josep Maria Bartomeu, watching from the stands, would not have minded as Barca dominated from start to finish.

Barcelona were again without Andres Iniesta (left knee) and Neymar (ankle), but that did not stop the defending champions, who were denied by the woodwork in the sixth minute when Alexis' clipped effort hit the left post.

Duda forced Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes into a diving save with a curling free kick but the hosts were dominating, and only a sloppy first touch robbed Messi of a goal, as he lobbed wide, before Caballero clawed away a Dani Alves shot from a tight angle.

Caballero then kept out Jordi Alba and Flavio Pereira cleared Pedro's goalbound header, and while Valdes had to react quickly to keep out Marcos Angeleri's header, the chances kept coming for Martino's men.

Alba flicked onto the roof of the net before Pique finally broke the deadlock, as Xavi's corner was flicked on by Alexis, allowing the defender to chest down and power his shot past Caballero.

The goalkeeper denied Cesc Fabregas on the stroke of half-time and Alba made an important clearance after the break, restricting Bartlomiej Pawlowski a free shot on goal following Vitorino Antunes' cross.

Alexis and Fabregas were frustrated by Caballero again before Pique nodded a Xavi corner onto the post. But Pedro killed the game off in the 55th minute when he showed great skill before curling past Caballero with his right foot.

Duda's long-distance effort forced Valdes to scramble back, but a terrific Messi run led to Barca's third, as Pedro unselfishly squared for Alexis to tap in at the far post just after the hour mark.

Messi had a free kick narrowly go over, as his search for a league goal continued, while Caballero saved superbly to keep out Fabregas in the dying stages, but three goals were more than enough for Barcelona.

Rayo Vallecano 2-4 Atletico Madrid: Arda at the double as Rojiblancos reclaim top spot

    363200hp2.jpg

Atletico Madrid returned to the summit of La Liga - for the time being at least - courtesy of a hard-fought 4-2 win over Rayo Vallecano on Sunday evening.

David Villa opened the scoring at the Campo de Futbol de Vallecas before Arda Turan struck either side of Jonathan Viera's effort to help the visitors into a 3-1 lead at the interval.

A Saul own goal saw Diego Simeone's men pull further clear and even though Rayo pulled a goal back through Joaquin Larrivey, the Rojiblancos held on to move back above Real Madrid and Barcelona in the standings.

Atletico made a dream start in the Spanish capital thanks to Villa. The Spain international took advantage of some dreadfully lax defending from Raul Baena on the edge of his own box to send the ball in the direction of strike partner Diego Costa. The Brazil-born forward shaped to shoot but cleverly laid it off to Villa, who finished emphatically into the top right corner.

Rayo should have levelled just three minutes later, though, when Javi Manquillo clipped Alberto Bueno in the area. The contact appeared accidental but the referee pointed to the spot all the same. However, Thibaut Courtois guessed correctly, getting down rapidly to his right-hand side to parry Viera's penalty away to safety.

The hosts were punished for their profligacy on the half-hour mark when Arda was left with an open goal after good work from Costa and Jose Sosa on the right flank.

Rayo did pull a goal back when Viera made amends for his penalty miss by firing home with the aid of a deflection, after terrific link-up play involving Larrivey and Roberto Trashorras.

However, Atletico restored their two-goal advantage just before the break, Arda popping up at the back post to stab home a Gabi free kick from wide on the left touchline.

The Rojiblancos rarely looked troubled in the second period, though they were dealt a blow in the 68th minute when Oliver Torres, who had only just come on as a substitute, was stretchered from the field in obvious agony after suffering a suspected dislocated shoulder.

Simeone's side made light of the injury, though, and made it 4-1 with 15 minutes remaining when Saul, under intense pressure from Costa, put Filipe Luis' fine ball across the area through his own net.

Rayo pulled a goal back almost immediately, with Larrivey connecting brilliantly with Viera's in-swinging cross from the left wing to beat Courtois with a well-placed header, but there was to be no dramatic comeback, as Atletico saw the game out to once again move a point clear of second-placed Madrid ahead of third-placed Barcelona's game in hand at Malaga.

Riviere dedicates Monaco win over Marseille to Falcao

    363273_heroa.jpg

Emmanuel Riviere dedicated Monaco's 2-0 win over Olympique de Marseille on Sunday night to injured team-mate Radamel Falcao.

The Colombia international has been ruled out of action for the remainder of the season, and potentially the World Cup, after suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage in his left knee in midweek.

Riviere and fellow forward Valere Germain ensured that Falcao's absence was not felt by firing Monaco to a win that moved Claudio Ranieri's men to within three points of Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain, but the 23-year-old explained afterwards that the team's thoughts remain very much with their stricken colleague.

"I'm happy for Valere Germain but it's a great collective victory," the in-form attacker told Canal Plus. "We managed to stay together.

"We have a good squad and we dedicate this win to Radamel Falcao."

Up next for Monaco in Ligue 1 is an away game against Lorient on February 1.
