Barcelona 2-1 Manchester City (4-1 Agg): Messi magic seals it before late flurry

    378036hp2.jpg

Lionel Messi struck again for Barcelona against Manchester City to secure a 2-1 win (3-1 aggregate victory) at Camp Nou on Wednesday night and book the Catalans' place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The Argentine, who opened the scoring at the Etihad Stadium, threatened for the hosts in a first half of few chances and continued to cause problems after the restart, striking the foot of the post with Joe Hart beaten.

That let off briefly sparked Manuel Pellegrini's men into action, and the Chilean, watching from the stands, saw substitute Edin Dzeko denied by a wonderful save from Victor Valdes before Pablo Zabaleta skewed a good chance wide of the far post.

But Messi was not to be denied for much longer and, midway through the second period, the 26-year-old latched onto a through-ball from Cesc Fabregas that bobbled off Joleon Lescott before dinking the ball over Hart to virtually guarantee Barca's progression.

City's chances of scoring the three goals they needed were made even harder when Zabaleta was shown a second yellow card for dissent, with the full-back furious at the referee's decision not to award a penalty after Dzeko was swiped down by Gerard Pique.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, the visitors struck a late consolation goal through Vincent Kompany, only for Dani Alves to add further gloss to the scoreline with another stoppage-time goal against City in a frantic finale.

Gerardo Martino, who had been under pressure going into the tie, made two changes to the Barca side beaten by Real Valladolid on Saturday, with Jordi Alba and Andres Iniesta replacing Adriano and Pedro.

Lescott, Yaya Toure, Samir Nasri and Sergio Aguero were the only City players to retain their starting places following Sunday's shock FA Cup defeat to Wigan, with Pellegrini electing to the ring the changes.

City were aggrieved with a penalty awarded to Messi in the first leg, though they got lucky when the Argentina forward appeared to be caught by Lescott just eight minutes in but referee Syephane Lannoy saw nothing untoward.

The Premier League side were fortunate once again 17 minutes in, when Neymar had the ball in the back of the net, but marauding full-back Alba was adjudged to be offside in the build-up, despite appearing to have timed his run to perfection.

The Brazil forward then fired into the side-netting before Joe Hart denied Xavi and Nasri spurned City's best chance of the first half when he shot straight at Victor Valdes from inside the penalty area after a fine move.

City were indebted to Fernandinho a minute before the break when he headed Neymar's shot off the line to ensure that the first half ended goalless.

Aguero was withdrawn at the break due to a hamstring injury and his replacement, Dzeko, took just a minute to test Valdes with a right-foot strike.

Lescott breathed a sigh of relief when he gave the ball away and Messi ended a trademark run with a measured left-foot shot that struck the post five minutes after the break.

City needed a minor miracle, but they looked far more threatening in the opening stages of the second half - Valdes producing an outstanding reflex save to keep out a Dzeko header that looked destined for the top corner of the net.

Zabaleta then sliced a left-footed shot just wide as City began to push forward in search of the goals they needed.

Messi finally eased Barca's nerves after 66 minutes though, coolly finishing with the outside of his left foot after Lescott had clumsily failed to deal with Fabregas' attempted through-ball – it was the Argentine's 28th goal of the season and eighth in the current Champions League camapign.

City ought to have had a spot-kick 12 minutes from time when Pique brought down Dzeko, but the French official waved play on and then sent off Zabaleta for his furious protests.

Kompany did give the travelling support something to shout about when he turned in from close range a minute from time, tucking in Dzeko's knockdown.

But Alves had the final say, just as he did in the first leg, as he calmly slotted home a minute into stoppage time after good work from Iniesta to set the seal victory on the night and ensure Barcelona progressed to the quarter-finals in style.

Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 Bayer Leverkusen (6-1 Agg): Parisiens ease into quarter-finals

    378035hp2.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain sealed their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 2-1 (6-1 Agg) win over Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday.

Trailing 4-0 from a catastrophic first leg at the BayArena, the Bundesliga outfit were afforded no chance of progressing on Tuesday, even after Sidney Sam opened the scoring with a close-range header just five minutes in.Their faint hopes were dashed soon after when defender Marquinhos registered his third goal in the competition this term to level the scores after 13 minutes - with Simon Rolfes' saved penalty signalling it was not to be for Sami Hyypia's men.

PSG have lost only once at home in all competitions since November 2012 and Ezequiel Lavezzi kept that record safe when he put the hosts in front with a cool finish from inside the area nine minutes after the break.Leverkusen applied plenty of pressure on PSG in the second half, but the dismissal of Emre Can took away the chance to salvage pride, as the Ligue 1 champions eased into the quarter-finals.

Can had forced Salvatore Sirigu into an early stop, curling an effort on target after just three minutes, and Leverkusen's hopes of a comeback were given an early boost when Sam got on the end of Giulio Donati's cross from the right.

It was nothing more than their positive start deserved but the hosts were level shortly after when Marquinhos rose highest in the penalty area to head home Yohan Cabaye's corner.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, whose first-leg brace helped put Leverkusen to the sword in Germany, almost doubled the hosts' advantage with a dinked effort that struck the crossbar before captain Rolfes wasted a glorious opportunity from 12 yards to rekindle hopes of a recovery.

After Eren Derdiyok was hauled down by Christophe Jallet, Rolfes saw his penalty saved by Sirigu as the skipper spurned the chance to keep some pressure on their French opponents.

PSG then got back on the front foot before the break, Cavani swivelling well in the box before firing straight at Bernd Leno, with Lavezzi putting PSG ahead for the first time early in the second half.Digne's cutback was met by Lavezzi who made no mistake in tucking the ball past Leno - maintaining their impressive record at the Parc des Princes.

With nothing to play for, Leverkusen continued to play with freedom - Omer Toprak and Gonzalo Castro both testing Sirigu - while at the other end a strangely out-of-sorts Ibrahimovic ballooned an effort over the crossbar.

However, Can's second yellow card midway through the second half hampered Hyypia's side further while home boss Laurent Blanc was able to take off Lavezzi, Ibrahimovic and Cavani ahead of a tough Ligue 1 test against Saint-Etienne at the weekend.

Zubizarreta: Tata has handled everything well

    240961_heroa.jpg

Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta has praised coach Gerardo Martino for the way he has managed the dressing room between Saturday’s defeat to Real Valladolid and Wednesday’s win over Manchester City.

The Blaugrana progressed into the quarter-finals of the Champions League by beating City 2-1 in Camp Nou, winning 4-1 on aggregate.“Tata has managed to the team very well from Saturday's loss to the game today,” he told AS.

“The team is fine physically. If not we wouldn’t have managed to play a good game against a team as powerful as City."

Zubizaretta went on to congratulate the team for their performance against the Premier League side and says he felt Manuel Pellegrini's side made it difficult for the Catalan giants. “We played a very good game against a great opponent, who has a lot of talents, and wanted to have the ball but we have controlled the game.

“City came at us in the second half but that’s normal, they had to risk it, and we also created chances.

“The tie was decided over 180 minutes. We had a good lead from the first-leg but it could have become complicated."

I expected more from PSG – Blanc

    377544_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain sailed through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 2-1 (6-1) win over Bayer Leverkusen at Parc des Princes - but coach Laurent Blanc was still unhappy with his side.

In the early stages of the game Sidney Sam gave the Germans the lead, and though goals from Marquinhos and Ezequiel Lavezzi turned the match around, the overall display did not leave the coach pleased.

“During our preparations we told the players to forget the first leg,” he told the press. “It is true that subconsciously we knew we had a cushion, but there were players who have had little opportunity to play.

“It’s a Champions League match – we should show our best face.

“I expected more from my team in this match of a higher level. But I will not be choosy – we have had a lot of satisfaction from the beginning of the season with this team.”

Blanc confessed that PSG can no longer see reaching the last eight of the quarter-finals as a “bonus”.

“Now the hard work begins, the motivation of the players will be present.

“We are going to have a very good season. It is already good but at the end of the season, what matters is to win trophies, the championship, the Coupe de la Ligue and to go as far as possible in the Champions League.

“We will wait for the draw next Friday as this may be an important moment in the competition.”

    Martino: Barcelona can beat anyone

    376467_heroa.jpg

Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino says his side's victory over Manchester City in the Champions League is evidence they can beat any team they face.

The Spanish side progressed to the quarter-finals as they defeated Manuel Pellegrini's men 2-1 in Camp Nou on Wednesday, winning 4-1 on aggregate.

The Barca coach said his team came up against a formidable opponent in their second round tie and feels the fact that they emerged victorious in both legs shows that they can beat any side in the competition. "We won 4-1 with two wins against a very good opponent collectively and individually," he told reporters after the game.

"When we play like that we can beat any opponent.

"Tonight we faced the best rivals we could have been drawn against and a team who could have gone further in the tournament. The game was one that needed to be overcome."

The 51-year-old then praised City and admitted they struggled to deal with them at times.

"There were moments in which we had control and others in which we struggled. City played more of the game 11 against 11 and they were more dangerous then."It was predictable that City would have the ball at certain points. We didn't feel at ease when not in possession and we struggled at dead-ball situations.

"Manchester City are not a team you want to be sharing possession with and that's why we played the way we did tonight. It's probable that we will [continue] to play that way when we come up against sides who can work the ball around well."

Martino then went on to thank his team's fans for the support they showed throughout the 90 minutes. "We not only have to single out the presence of our supporters tonight – their attitude and backing of the team [was also impressive]. We really needed that and I think it was an acknowledgement of these players who have given so much to this team."

Messi: We're back to our best

    378053_heroa.jpg

Lionel Messi says Barcelona were back to their best on Wednesday night as they beat Manchester City 2-1 to qualify for the Champions League quarter-finals.

Messi was in fine form throughout the game and opened the scoring in the first-half as the Catalan giants defeated Manuel Pellegrini's side in Camp Nou, winning 4-1 on aggregate.

Despite reaching the last-eight of club football's most prestigious competition, the Blaugrana have come under a lot of criticism as they have slipped four points behind league leaders Real Madrid in La Liga.

Speaking after the game, Messi said Barca deserved the victory against the Premier League club and feels his side's performance was of the level people have come to expect of them in recent years.

"We defeated a very difficult rival," he told Canal+. "After two very serious slip-ups [in the league] when we didn’t play well, today we saw the Barcelona that people expect to see.

“We played well throughout and achieved our objective of getting through.
“Despite their goal I don't think the tie was ever in danger [from our perspective]. Prior to my goal we were controlling the game and could have scored before.
“We knew we had to get a goal to calm ourselves down because of the potential they have."

Gerardo Martino's men have won only five of their last 10 games in La Liga but Messi is insistent that his side remain very much in the title race."We are the first to criticise ourselves. We know we did not do things like we should have, but that does not mean the league is lost because there is still a lot to play for."

Arda Turan: Atletico can handle anyone

    377762_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid winger Arda Turan believes his side can beat anyone in the last-eight of the Champions League.

The Spanish side progressed to the quarter-finals of Europe's premier club competition as they eased past AC Milan 5-1 on aggregate after Tuesday's 4-1 win second-leg win at the Vicente Calderon.

And the former Galatasaray striker admits that his side's opponents in the next round will provide a difficult test, but he feels they can put up a good fight against any team.

"Now we’ll see who we have to face. A more difficult match awaits us," he told RadyoSpor. "But this team might win something. We’re doing everything we can for it."We can’t choose who we think will give us the best chance of going through. We can handle any team, we are strong. The opponent doesn’t matter."

The 27-year-old then went on to discuss Galatasaray's chances of progressing to the quarter-finals of the competition as they prepare to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next Tuesday after drawing 1-1 in Turkey. “I hope Galatasaray do well," he added."The 1-1 scoreline wasn't a bad result at all, one goal in London and who knows what can happen.

"I get the feeling Galatasaray can knock out Chelsea from the competition, they definitely have the capability."

'Thohir's not a snake oil salesman,' says former Inter president

    364951_heroa.jpg

Former Inter president Ernesto Pellegrini says Erick Thohir is "not a snake oil salesman" and will restore the Nerazzurri to their former glories.

The Indonesian was appointed president of the Italian giants last November after acquiring a 70% stake in the club from Massimo Moratti.Pellegrini, who owned the club for 11 years between 1984 to 1995, had previously said he was sceptical about the new owner but now admits he counts him as a friend and feels he is the right man for the club.

“I must admit I have changed my mind after I met him,” he told Gazzetta Dello Sport. “He wanted to meet me so I invited him to my house for lunch before the derby.“There were 35 friends there and he made a good impression on us all. He was happy and he told me he would be back.

“I thought he was a simple man, helpful, balanced and full of enthusiasm, he's not a snake oil salesman.“We have agreed to meet again with our families. I feel like a friend and I like the respect he showed me the last time he saw me.

“Within two or three years, as he said, Inter can get back to winning. The base is already there.”

Thohir has already signalled his intent in the transfer market by confirming the summer arrival of Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic, with further recruits reportedly set to follow.

:cool:Falcao could be fit for World Cup, claims surgeon

    377970_heroa.jpg

The surgeon who operated on Radamel Falcao believes that the forward could be fit to represent Colombia at this summer's World Cup.

It initially appeared that the Monaco ace had little hope of travelling to Brazil after suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage in a Coupe de France match in January.

However, Jose Carlos Noronha says that Falcao is on course to return to action before June."Each case is different but he is on the right track," the surgeon told L'Equipe. "He has recovered very well."I still believe he could play the World Cup; there is no reason why it could not work."

Falcao has netted 20 times in 51 appearances for Colombia, who have been drawn in Group C alongside Greece, Ivory Coast and Japan.

    Vermaelen unsure over Arsenal future

    370935_heroa.jpg

Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen admits he does not know where he will be playing his football next season.

The Belgium international's contract expires at the end of next season and he has been linked with a number of clubs, including Manchester United, Napoli and Barcelona.

He has started only eight games for the Gunners this season, including at left-back in Tuesday's Champions League draw against Bayern Munich, and he says he is in the dark about his next move.

"There has been a lot of speculation, but I can't talk about it because I don't know what is going on," Vermaelen told reporters at the Allianz Arena.

"My focus is at Arsenal at the moment. There is still a lot to play for - I can't do anything about rumours.

"It is not easy, but I try to stay positive. Firstly, I have been injured in the last couple of weeks, but when the boss needs me, I try to play well.

"I know anything can happen, so I am happy to play when he needs me.

"From my point of view, I hope it is as much as it can be. I work hard for the team and that is the only thing that I can do."

'Really difficult' to see Liverpool doing well, says Rooney

    371891_heroa.jpg

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney says it is "very difficult" to see Liverpool and Manchester City challenging for the Premier League title.

The reigning champions have not been involved in the title race this season and are even outsiders for a place in the top four.

Chelsea are currently seven points clear at the top of the table, but both Liverpool and Arsenal have one game in hand, while City have three, and Rooney says it is especially hard to have to sit back and watch United's traditional rivals battling for the top honours.

"To see City doing well, and particularly Liverpool, is really difficult," the England international told club magazine Inside United.

"It's not nice when we know we are capable of being up there challenging and we haven't been doing that this season.

"However, it means we have to step up and get back up there because the feeling we've had this season is not a nice feeling at all to have.

"We have to keep working, keep progressing and finish the season stronger.

"As a group of players and a team we haven't been good enough this season and we have to put that right.

"After Sir Alex [Ferguson] being here for 26 years, there was always going to be a change whoever came in and, in fairness, I think the players have to do better."

United skipper Nemanja Vidic will leave Old Trafford for Inter at the end of the season and Rooney has admitted he would like to take the armband for next season.

"I've captained a few times for United and if the manager wants me to be captain, I'd have no problem with that," the forward added.

The England captaincy could also soon be up for grabs, should Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard elect to call time on his international career after this year's World Cup.

And Rooney, who has captained his country twice in his 89 appearances to date, would also relish the chance to lead England on a full-time basis.

"It'd be a great honour to captain my country but, again, it's the manager's call and I'm sure he'll have a few contenders," he continued.

"You don't know what Steven is going to do in the summer, only he knows."

Reina: I want to win Coppa & Europa League

    377023_heroa.jpg

Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina believes that his side are capable of winning both the Europa League and the Coppa Italia this season.

The Spaniard moved to the San Paolo from Liverpool on loan last summer and though the Partenopei's title challenge is all but over, he insists he can end the campaign with silverware - and is desperate for "revenge" against Juventus in the Europa League final in Turin.

"For me, there is no difference between the Coppa Italia and the Europa League," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I have no preference – I just want to win them both. Even more so now that we have quite a good advantage in the League table in terms of the top four.

"European nights are always special though. Juve in the final? That would be a nice bit of revenge for us.

"We believe in second place [in Serie A]. We will fight until the end because it's an important goal for this club."

This is Reina's first spell in Italian football after a lengthy career in La Liga and the Premier League and the Spain international believes that the game is more complex in Serie A.

"Compared to Spain and England, it is true that the Italian games lacks a bit of speed. But it is definitely more tactical," said the former Barcelona man.

"It is not true that it's a defensive game, but, it must be said that when you have the points in the bag, you start to move back."

AC Milan were a match for Atletico, insists Poli

    377595_heroa.jpg

AC Milan midfielder Andrea Poli has insisted that Atletico Madrid are not much better than his side, despite their 5-1 aggregate win over Clarence Seedorf's men in the Champions League.

The Rossoneri sit in mid-table in Serie A after a poor campaign which eventually cost coach Massimiliano Allegri his job in January.

Diego Simeone's troops are in the middle of the Liga title race and have now progressed to the last eight of the Champions League after a resounding victory, but the Italian insists there is not that big a gulf between the two teams.

"We have to start back from those 20-30 minutes when we were playing at their level," he told the club's offical website.

"It's a shame as we conceded immediately once the game started. We were playing well at 1-1 and then there was that own goal. It's a bad day for all of us.

"After 2-1 they overcame us, especially in the second half. When you lose 4-1, you can't talk about good individual performances. We were in trouble for a lot of the game.

"I want to start again from that 20-30 minutes in the first half when we were at 1-1. We'll get back on our feet, starting from tomorrow and analyse the positives and the negatives from the match.

"Now we have 11 games left and we want to win them all to end the season in the best way possible. This was a good chance here this evening but we didn't take it. Now we have to get back on our feet as soon as we can.

"The start of the match was bad and we can't deny that. After we got to 1-1, it was more balanced and then we let in an unlucky goal that cut us off at the legs a bit."

Puyol is one of Spain's greatest ever, says Hierro

    375223_heroa.jpg

Former Real Madrid and Spain defender Fernando Hierro believes that Carles Puyol will go down as one of the finest centre-backs his country has ever produced.

The Barcelona skipper announced his intention to leave Camp Nou at the end of the season earlier this year, leaving the Blaugrana in dire need of defensive reinforcements.

And the 45-year-old believes Puyol will be nearly impossible to replace due to his influential nature and the Catalans' style of play.

"Puyol is a great, an example for everyone for his honesty and his loyalty," he is quoted as saying by AS.

"He will go down as one of the best three centre-backs in the history of Spain. I have the upmost respect for him. He'll go down in history.

"It's always difficult to replace a player like Puyol. Barca will try and search for a replacement for Puyol at home. It's not that easy to find good centre-backs who can adapt to Barca's game, when you have to defend high up."

Hierro also claimed that Barcelona's era of dominance is now coming to an end, insisting it would be "impossible" to maintain the standards set under Pep Guardiola forever.

"There comes a time when success becomes an obligation. When you are in a winning cycle, everything is a requirement.

"Everyone thinks you can play at the same level as Pep Guardiola's Barca forever, but I think that's impssible."
