Moyes explains Januzaj’s recent lack of game time

    352899_heroa.jpg

David Moyes has revealed Adnan Januzaj's recent omissions from Manchester United's team have been to protect the youngster from burnout.

The 19-year-old attacker made an electric introduction to his Old Trafford career, scoring twice on his first Premier League start at Sunderland in October and impressing many with his tricky wing play.

But Januzaj has featured just twice in March, missing out on the matchday squad altogether for last Tuesday's loss to Manchester City.United host Aston Villa on Saturday before a crucial Champions League quarter-final first leg against Bayern Munich at Old Trafford, and Moyes insists the winger is still a big part of his plans.

"I think Adnan has played an incredible amount of games for a 19-year-old," the Scot told reporters."We have to be mindful of that. We have seen signs in training that we have to be careful what we do with him.

"He is a great talent and he is someone we know will go a long way at Manchester United. But we are just being careful with him."We have to do the right things and he has played a lot of football."

Xavi rules out retirement: I'm in better shape than ever

    363379_heroa.jpg

Barcelona ace Xavi says that he is in best shape of his life and is therefore not even entertaining the idea of hanging up his boots right now.

The Spain midfielder turned 34 in January but insists that while he he does not see himself still being involved in international football when the 2018 World Cup rolls around, retirement is currently the last thing on his mind.

"I am physically well," he told So Foot. "I feel even better than the previous two seasons.

"Honestly, this is the first time in my career that I have felt so good. I'm more mature and much better physically."

Consequently, Xavi has given little thought to what he will do with himself when he does eventually decide to call time on his illustrious playing career.

"What I know is that I love football and I intend to stay in this world," the World Cup winner stated.

"In any case, I would not know where to look [for a job] in an office. What do you want me to do - economics?

"Social and political debates are too complicated for me. What I like is football."

When he does retire, Xavi will leave behind an incredible legacy, given he has been a key component in the Spain and Barcelona sides that have dominated world football and international and club level for varying periods of time.

Consequently, some pundits feel that he will go down as his country's greatest ever player - but the man himself is embarrassed by such talk.

"There are many other players," he argued. "Why shouldn't [Iker] Casillas be considered the best Spanish player of all time? He has virtually the same titles as I do.

"There's also [Carles] Puyol, [Sergio] Ramos, [David] Villa, Raul ... And [Fernando] Hierro, [Pep] Guardiola, Luis Suarez, [Alfredo] Di Stefano ...

"But just the fact that I'm cited in this debate is an honour."

Xavi humbly added that two coaches in particular have played a key role in the successes he has enjoyed as a player.

"[Pep Guardiola] will always be an important person in my life," he confessed. "He was when I was a kid, and he was when he coached me [at Barcelona].

"I've liked working with all the coaches I've had but if I had to highlight two, it would be Pep and [former Spain boss Luis] Aragones. They have been very important."

Pirlo: Tevez has proven himself an 'extraordinary' talent

    380981_heroa.jpg

Andrea Pirlo has paid tribute to Carlos Tevez for himself a player of "extraordinary capabilities" since joining Juventus last summer.

AC Milan appeared the Italian side most likely to sign the Argentine from former club Manchester City but a proposed move to San Siro during the 2013 January transfer window collapsed because of the two parties' inability to agree a deal.

The Rossoneri's loss proved Juve's gain, as Tevez has enjoyed a stunning debut campaign in Italy following a €14 million move to Turin, having netted 18 times in 19 Serie A appearances.

“He’s a truly great player with extraordinary capabilities," Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia. "Everyone knew it already because he had won a lot in England, but as soon as he got here he showed his value.”

Tevez's goals have put Juve within touching distance of a third successive Scudetto, with Antonio Conte's men currently 14 points clear of second-placed Roma.

Pirlo, though, is taking nothing for granted, particularly as Juve face a trick trip to the San Paolo on Sunday to face Napoli, who sit third in the standings.

“We’ve played a great season so far, but we haven’t won anything yet," the midfielder pointed out.

"Napoli are a strong side, and out there on the field the points difference will count for nothing on Sunday."

Indeed, Pirlo insists that in spite of their advantageous position in the league, there will be no letting up in closing weeks of the season as Juve look to pull off a Serie A and Europa League double.

“I always play to win, always with the big objectives in mind," the Italy international declared. "This year it’s the Italian championship and the Europa League.

“The formation and the style of play might have changed in these three years [at Juve], but the desire has always been a constant.”

Pirlo joined Juve on a free transfer in 2011, after a decade with AC Milan.

Fans 'entitled' to protest, says under-pressure Moyes

    380601_heroa.jpg

Manchester United boss David Moyes says a group of disgruntled fans who have paid for a plane carrying the banner 'Moyes Out' to fly over Old Trafford are “entitled” to protest.

The message, 'Wrong One - Moyes Out', is in reaction to a controversial 'Chosen One' banner that hangs inside the stadium, with sections of supporters keen to vent their frustration at the Scot.

Under Moyes' watch United have slipped to seventh in the Premier League and will almost certainly fail to qualify for the Champions League this season.

The former Everton boss, though, was quick to downplay the significance of the protest, which will take place during Saturday's game against Aston Villa, and hinted that setbacks were to be expected as he begins rebuilding the club.

"I have heard of it and what they are saying about it, but this is a long journey," said Moyes when asked about the banner at his press conference on Friday.

"This is only the start of the journey. People are entitled to do that."

Protest organiser Wes Jones, meanwhile, says the purpose of the 'Wrong One' campaign is to highlight that United fans are not totally united behind Moyes.

"The rumblings of discontent have started in the stands," Jones told the BBC. "We wanted to show that support isn't as 100 per cent as Moyes would like to think."

Lucas Moura: I'd love Oscar to join PSG

    383888_heroa.jpg

Chelsea attacker Oscar has been urged to join Paris Saint-Germain by compatriot Lucas Moura, just days after Yohan Cabaye revealed his desire to play alongside Eden Hazard.

The Stamford Bridge outfit take on PSG in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, with the first leg in Paris on Wednesday, and former Sao Paulo man Lucas has singled out Oscar as a player he would love to line up alongside next season.

"Oscar is a very good player. A rare talent in today's football, given his qualities. He is very complete and is very smart. We need someone like him at PSG," the Brazilian is quoted as saying by The Daily Telegraph.

"I think he would help us a lot. The more quality players there are, the better it is for the squad. Also, he's a very good friend of mine. I would be very happy if he came to PSG, the club too."

Lucas' declaration comes hot on the heels of former Newcastle midfielder Cabaye's revelation that the number one player he would like PSG to sign is Hazard, who he deems to be Chelsea's greatest threat.

"Eden Hazard is the Chelsea player. He can make the difference at any time, can be dangerous every time he touches the ball," the France international told PMU.

"Who would I recruit if I was the sporting director? Hazard is a player I would like to see at PSG. It would do so much good in Paris and for the championship. He is one of the best players I’ve played against."

    Guardiola ignoring Man United clash

    381663_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola says he has put all thoughts of his side's Champions League quarter-final clash with Manchester United to the back of his mind.

The Bavarians wrapped up the Bundesliga title with victory over Hertha Berlin on Tuesday and face Hoffenheim on Saturday before their trip to Old Trafford three days later.

However, the Spaniard is insistent that his players must focus on their latest league clash and wants them to perfect their game against Markus Gisdol's men.

"We want to keep going. I don't think it's necessary to say that to the players," he told a press conference.

"We need to play as much as possible to prepare for the quarter-final in Manchester. I don't want the players to think about the Champions League.

"In every game we can improve the small details."

Meanwhile, Guardiola confirmed that back-up keeper Tom Starke would line up against his former club after impressing in training.

"He deserves it. He continues to train well, is a super guy and always supports the team."

Bayern and Hoffenheim kick off at 15:30CET on Saturday.

AC Milan and Man United in transition, says Seedorf

    383570_heroa.jpg

AC Milan coach Clarence Seedorf believes the plight of his side this season is similar to that of Premier League champions Manchester United.

The former Netherlands midfielder took charge of the Rossoneri in January after the club parted ways with Massimiliano Allegri following a disastrous start to the campaign.

But despite beating Fiorentina 2-0 in Serie A on Wednesday, Seedorf has struggled to inject consistency into his side, but insists he needs time to make an impact just like David Moyes at Old Trafford.

He said: "AC Milan, just like Manchester United, are going through a period of transition and difficulty, but I'm sure they still have the desire to be competitive every year.

"It is clear at a time like this we need patience and I think the fans will see commitment. I am optimistic for the future of Milan."

Victory over Fiorentina still leaves Milan in 12th place in Serie A and Seedorf admits he is refusing to get carried away with the win.

"As a coach you feel different emotions," he added. The heart must be less strong than when you're a player. You manage your emotions better.

"We need to remember that at some points we haven't got the points we deserved from games and then we've had positive results and not followed them up with consistency.

"But we've played well in our last two games and I ask the boys to show me the same as they have done against Lazio and Fiorentina."

:yes:Brazil, Spain, Argentina and Germany are World Cup favourites - Ronaldo

    369051_heroa.jpg

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo says Brazil, Argentina, Spain and Germany are the favourites to win the World Cup this summer.

The 29-year-old came through a dramatic play-off with Sweden - in which he scored a hat-trick in the second leg of the two-legged tie - to secure his place at the tournament with the Seleccao,

But Ronaldo believes the weight of expectation will be far greater for the four leading contenders after dismissing any suggestion Portugal could be considered a dark horse in the competition.

Speaking after being unveiled as a global ambassador for Fly Emirates he said: "I hope we have a great World Cup, we aren't under pressure as the favourites are Brazil, Spain, Argentina and Germany. The first game is important as it is against a big nation in Germany."

The former Manchester United man became his nation's highest goalscorer of all-time after scoring twice in the 5-1 friendly win over Cameroon earlier in March, taking his tally to 49 goals in 110 international appearances.

Moyes rejects Manchester United rift rumours

    382984_heroa.jpg

Under-pressure Manchester United manager David Moyes has dismissed rumours of a rift between himself and the squad.

Heavy home defeats against rivals Liverpool and Manchester City in recent weeks have seen the Scot's position come into question, with United sitting seventh and 18 points adrift of leaders Chelsea.

Rio Ferdinand revealed on Friday that he was "embarrassed" by the champions' slump, but Moyes has stressed that the players are responding to his techniques and the group are working well together.

When whether he had the full support of his squad, Moyes told reporters: "Definitely. No reason to suggest anything else.

"They’re great, they train great, we work well together and we have a great relationship as far as I’m concerned. But what I want is for us to have a winning team, me and them together.

"The players know exactly what it is to play for Manchester United and the standards they have to set.

"But they're hurting as well as me and are desperate to put it right. And hopefully when we get to the game against Villa, they can show that.

"It's a long journey here and this is only the start of it. You work hard to get here in the first place but I've got to say I'm more driven to succeed than ever.

"I want the team to turn around and I want to change the position we're in just now. I really do believe we can do that.

"We’ve got a great club, which gives you the chance to do that because of the people we can attract and the players we can attract to the club. But it’s just going to take a little bit of time to get it sorted."

Ronaldo is fit to play against Rayo, confirms Ancelotti

    362654_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed Cristiano Ronaldo will be fit to face Rayo Vallecano on Saturday despite suffering from a "small problem."

Reports have circulated in the Spanish media this week that the Portugal star has been playing through the pain of a knee injury sustained in the Champions League last-16 win over Schalke.

While Ancelotti admits he would be willing to rest the 29-year-old should any physical discomfort become serious, the Italian insists his star man will be in action this weekend.

"Cristiano has been training normally, I don't think it's been affecting his game and he will play tomorrow. It's no problem," he told a press conference.

"We thought of resting him, but the problem has been managed well and he is confident. If things don't improve, we'll give him a break. It's a small problem."

Ancelotti also said he would not drop Diego Lopez in favour of Iker Casillas for Saturday's clash despite some calls for the Spain skipper to be returned to the full-time No.1 role following Lopez's showing in the defeat to Sevilla.

"It's something I've already spoken about. Things can change, but Diego Lopez has been doing well, like Iker. Diego Lopez will play tomorrow, Iker on Wednesday," Ancelotti said.

The former Paris Saint-Germain coach also claimed Xabi Alonso does not needed to be rested despite two disappointing showings in Madrid's back-to-back defeats.

"The last two games haven't been great, but the player is physically fine. It may be that he has made mistakes but he is a very important player," he said.

"When he needs rest, he will rest. In the two defeats the team showed a good physical condition."

Madrid will be desperate to return to winning ways after seeing their lead at the top of La Liga disappear in the last two matchdays and Ancelotti has called for a greater level of concentration from his side.

"It's not just a problem in our play. We've conceded six goals and we need to avoid these kind of errors because we paid dearly for them," he added.

"We need more concentration than normal."

Wenger confirms intention to stay & hopes Sagna follows suit

    381476_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger has reaffirmed his commitment to Arsenal in the wake of one of the most testing weeks of his tenure and is hopeful that long-serving right-back Bacary Sagna will follow suit.

The Gunners manager appeared to concede defeat in the title race following the midweek draw against Swansea which represented a further setback following on from the painful 6-0 drubbing at Chelsea last weekend.

But Wenger insists he is has no desire to break his word, hinting he will remain in the job having agreed a new deal in principle.

"My commitment is not questionable," he told reporters. "I have given my word and I always respect my word."

Wenger is also optimistic that Sagna, who is out of contract in the summer but has been offered a new deal, will also extend his stay at the club.

"He has an offer, he has not come back to us yet," he said. "I'm confident he will stay, yes, but we'll accept his decision, no matter what his decision will be we will accept it and go on with it."

When pressed on the full-back's future, Wenger also moved to quash speculation suggesting that Manchester City have offered him a deal, claiming that any such approach would be against the rules.

"That cannot be right because it is illegal,” he said.

And such is his desire to keep Sagna, Wenger hinted that he could overlook the fact that the player is 31. In the past, he has been reticent to offer long-term deals to senior players but, when asked if age could be a sticking point, he replied: "Not for the defenders necessarily, no.

“It's a general law in our club, yes, but it's not a stupid law. We look at individual cases and we adapt it to individuals."

Rio Ferdinand 'embarrassed' at Manchester United slump

    368354_heroa.jpg

Rio Ferdinand admits he has been "embarrassed" at Manchester United's form this season.

David Moyes' men have endured a dismal campaign and currently sit 18 points behind league leaders Chelsea in seventh place. With little hope of finishing in the top four, United have just a Champions League quarter-final with Bayern Munich to look forward to as they look to qualify for Europe's elite club competition by lifting the trophy.

Despite their continued participation in the tournament, Ferdinand admits he has struggled to show his face in public in recent months, while describing their form as a “personal insult.”

"It's embarrassing,” he added when quizzed about United's recent displays by BT Sport. “I don't want to go out when the game is finished and you even stop watching TV. I don't want to take my kids to school. I don't want to fill my car up with petrol or go to the shops.

"I don't want to walk on the school path and think I'm hearing things or seeing people look at me because we lost a game.

"It gets personal with everyone looking at you and talking about the results and the form and stuff. You don't want to live like that. You want to live freely and comfortably."

Ferdinand also admits he and his team-mates have simply not earned the right to win the games under Moyes.

"You don't want to see other people lifting titles,” he added. “That's what we're used to. That's what we want. That's what we train for and work for.

"Don't get me wrong, we've got no divine right. You've got to earn that right - and this season, we simply haven't done that."

Isco: Real Madrid have proven we can catch Barcelona

    383903_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid midfielder Isco has pointed to the club's impressive run of form earlier in the season as proof they can overhaul Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in La Liga.

The title hopefuls were undone 4-3 in the Clasico on Sunday before slumping to a 2-1 defeat against Sevilla in midweek, leaving them three points off top spot heading into Saturday's clash with Rayo Vallecano.

Madrid overturned a six-point gap to Barcelona earlier in the season after their 2-1 defeat at Camp Nou and Isco believes that run of 31 games without defeat has shown they have every chance of clinching the title in the final eight matches.

"It is a huge blow because it has completely changed the situation we were in two games ago," Isco told the club's official website.

"We are Real Madrid and are obliged to pick ourselves up. There are eight games left and we are confident in our ability to turn this situation around. We have already done that more than once.

"We came back from six points behind so why wouldn't we be able to do that now?"

In what is one of the most entertaining title races for years, Real's defeats in the past few days threaten to allow rivals Atletico to break the duopoly of Spain's two biggest clubs.

Diego Simeone's men are on track for a first league title since 1996, but Isco urged Real's fans to keep calm.

"This has been a big blow for the fans and also for us. But they should remain calm," he added.

"We are still competing in all three competitions. We are going to give it our all and fight until the very end like we have been doing up until now."

Ramsey to miss Manchester City clash, Wenger confirms

    383851_heroa.jpg

Aaron Ramsey will miss Arsenal's clash with Manchester City this weekend, with manager Arsene Wenger keen not to rush the Welshman back from injury.

Ramsey has not played for the club since Boxing Day, when he injured his thigh during a 3-1 win over West Ham.

And Wenger has now revealed the Gunners need to “be patient" with the star – who scored 13 goals during the first half of the campaign – and has ruled him out of this weekend's top of the table fixture.

“Ramsey is progressing well,” he told Arsenal's official website, “but we need to be patient for a few more weeks.”

Wenger will also be without Mesut Ozil and Jack Wilshere, but the Frenchman acknowledges there is a need to restore belief when City travel to the Emirates following a week which has seen his side thumped 6-0 by Chelsea and held to a 2-2 draw by Swansea.

"We have to restore belief as well as we can and accept our position at the end of the season but, at the moment, our focus is to recover from a high disappointment and recover for the next game,” he said.

    “It is a huge game."
