Fletcher: Manchester United squad fighting for their futures

    371119_heroa.jpg

Darren Fletcher says the entire Manchester United squad are fighting for their Old Trafford futures after a season of disappointments.

A 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday night signalled David Moyes' last chance to win major honours this term, with the club already out of the running for all domestic prizes.

Fletcher, though, does not expect the campaign to tail off with players needing to impress for personal reasons and to earn a place in the first-team squad next season.

"The boys have got to play well to stay in the manager's thoughts for next season," Fletcher told reporters.

"There is talk of a lot of changes so if you get an opportunity to play you have to go out there and perform and to show the manager that you want to be at United, that you are capable of being at United and you are good enough.

"A lot of people will say there isn't a lot to play for now, but there is - you are playing for personal pride and to be in the squad for next season."

With United bracing themselves for their first season without Champions League football since 1995, Fletcher feels the club should "embrace" the Europa League if they qualify come the end of the season.

"We should embrace it. Let's go and win it," the 30-year-old said. "Next year we won't just think about getting into the Champions League, we will think about winning the league and getting into Europe that way."

"The gap is not as big as people think. We have some fantastic players. There will be some signings too and hopefully they can take us to where we want to be."

:(Gundogan ruled out of World Cup

    383709_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp has revealed Ilkay Gundogan will miss this summer's World Cup as a result of the back injury that has plagued his season.

The 23-year-old picked up the problem back in August and was initially expected to be out for just a matter of weeks.

However, he has made slow progress in his recovery from the problem and will now focus his efforts on being ready for pre-season.

"Ilkay will not play at the World Cup," said Klopp.

"It is very hard for him to deal with. His back is better, it is all good, but it takes time to recover completely. We just have to wait."

Gundogan has been the subject of persistent transfer speculation, with his contract set to expire in the summer of 2015.

Manchester United and Real Madrid are reported to be among several interested parties and Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke wants a decision on his future by the end of April.

He told WAZ: "I have the impression that all parties are now aware of the fact that this month a decision must be made. Let's see how it will be."

Redknapp: Champions League teams want to sign Remy

    354136_heroa.jpg

Loic Remy is attracting the attention of Champions League clubs, according to QPR manager Harry Redknapp.

The striker, who is on loan at Newcastle, is expected to leave the west London outfit in the summer, with no guarantee of Premier League football at Loftus Road next season.

Remy has scored 13 goals for the Magpies this season and has a £10 million release clause in his QPR contract, and Redknapp believes many of Europe’s elite are waiting to activate it.

“Remy wants to play Champions League football next season, so they tell me,” Redknapp told reporters. “The chances of us keeping him are not great if he’s got a buy-out clause.

“He’s done well at Newcastle, and one or two other big clubs are trying to get him, so there’s every chance he will go.”

Redknapp also revealed he never had any doubts that Remy would prove a success in the Premier League.

“I chased him at Tottenham, and I knew he would do well,” Redknapp said. “He’s a scorer, and with the right team pushing to get in the top four, he’s capable of getting 20 goals.

“If I say he’s worth £20m, and his buy-out clause is £10m or whatever, then it’s difficult.”

Hernanes: I'm starting to understand Inter

    388354_heroa.jpg

Inter star Hernanes says he is starting to understand how things work at the club following his January move to from Lazio.

The Brazilian has made a solid start to his Nerazzurri career, scoring once in eight Serie A starts and feels he is settling well into his new surroundings.

"I'm starting to understand the dimensions of the club," the 28-year-old told Inter Channel.

"Everyone has congratulated me for coming and it has been great. You can see the supporters who always back us. Their passion motivates me."

Inter travel to Sampdoria on Sunday and Hernanes says he is determined to help his new team finish the season as positively as possible.

"We have already begun preparing for Sunday’s match. We want to be ready for the finale of the season.

"I can see quality in our team. I arrived here with a few problems but now I feel ready to help. I have confidence and I am ready."

Barcelona deserved to lose, concedes Iniesta

    389055_heroa.jpg

Andres Iniesta has admitted Barcelona deserved to lose their Champions League quarter-final with Atletico Madrid.

The Catalans suffered a 1-0 defeat at Vicente Calderon on Wednesday, with Koke's fifth-minute volley ensuring a 2-1 aggregate win for Atleti, while denying Barca a seventh-straight semi-final in the competition.

The visitors had opportunities to level matters, with the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Xavi all seeing chances go begging, but Iniesta conceded Atleti exerted more pressure in the opening stages and were rewarded for their efforts.
Iniesta has now set his sights on overhauling Atleti at the top of La Liga, while also pointing to Wednesday's Copa del Rey final with rivals Real Madrid as an ideal opportunity to bounce back."Atletico deserved to go through because they took advantage of their chances," the 29-year-old told Barcelona's official website.

"Like in the first 20 minutes, they pressured us and they took advantage. We tried to score until the end of the game."The Champions League is a very good competition and it's a shame that we didn't make the semi-finals.

"There aren't many league games left to win the title and we have a final in Granada this weekend and then on Wednesday in the cup."Full-back Jordi Alba echoed Iniesta's comments, lamenting Barcelona's failure to break down a stubborn Atletico rearguard.

He added: "They were the better team in the opening minutes and after that we took control of the match, but we didn't know how to get into their area."It's very difficult to beat a rival that play in this way. After 20 minutes, the intensity was the same for both teams.

"Now we have to win the Liga and the Copa del Rey. We have to forget about this game and start over. We don't like to lose these games, especially in a competition like this one."

:shocked:Ronaldo set to miss Copa del Rey final against Barcelona

    388393_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid have been dealt a serious blow following the news Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to miss next week's Copa del Rey final against Barcelona with a hamstring problem.

The Portugual international limped off in the closing stages of his side's 3-0 Champions League quarter-final first leg win over Borussia Dortmund.

He subsequently sat out the 4-0 win over Real Sociedad at Anoeta and was an unused substitute in the return game against Jurgen Klopp's side, as Madrid scraped through to the semi-finals 3-2 on aggregate after losing 2-0 on Tuesday night.

It has now been confirmed that the 29-year-old has suffered an injury to his left hamstring, and is reportedly set to miss around two weeks of action, which would rule him out of the crucial Clasico next Wednesday.

The problem also makes him a doubt for the first-leg of his side's Champions League semi-final on April 22 or 23, with Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and Bayern Munich all possible opponents in the last four.

Forlan: I told Suarez to join Manchester United

    381943_heroa.jpg

Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan has revealed he told countryman Luis Suarez to join Manchester United before his move to Liverpool in January 2011.

Suarez arrived at Anfield from Ajax in a €27.5 million deal and has propelled the Reds into a surprise Premier League title challenge this season, topping the scoring charts with 29 goals.

But Forlan, who now plays for J-League side Cerezo Osaka, has revealed things might have been very different had his international team-mate followed his advice.
"When Liverpool made him an offer," Forlan wrote in FourFourTwo, "I told him he should join Manchester United, but I also spoke well of Liverpool and their history."He loves playing at Liverpool. He likes the Premier League – and the fans love him because he's a striker's striker.

"He still chases everything, like Wayne Rooney used to before he moved deeper, and he's learned from his mistakes. We all make them."

:shocked:Bosnich: Manchester United need to spend more than £200m

    389041_heroa.jpg

Mark Bosnich believes Manchester United need to spend more than £200 million this summer but warns David Moyes will have to pay big wages to attract the necessary calibre of players to Old Trafford.

Wednesday’s defeat to Bayern Munich ended any realistic hopes of Champions League football next season, with United seven points adrift of Arsenal in fourth place.

Moyes, who has endured a frustrating first summer as United boss, believes a year without European football will not harm the club's reach in the transfer market this summer.

But Bosnich, who made 23 appearance for the Red Devils in 1999-00, thinks the Scot will struggle to prevent his primary targets from falling into the clutches of his rivals once more – unless he spends big.

“Manchester United will probably have to spend a little more than £200m,” he told talkSPORT’s 'Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast' show.

“Money wise, United can afford to be out of the Champions League for a few years. Where they can’t afford to fall behind is in their ability to entice top players to the club.

“If you’re going to get the best players in the world to play for you, then some of them will take a little less [money] if they know they’re going to play in the Champions League.

“It’s the biggest level of football bar none, including the World Cup. That’s where it’s going to cost them.

“To entice those players you’re probably going to have to pay them a little more just because you’re not in the Champions League. You have to say, ’I know we’re not there this year, but if you come here then you can help us be in it the year after’.”

Mourinho fined £8,000 for Aston Villa incident

    379057_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho has been fined £8,000 by the Football Association for his conduct during Chelsea's 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

Mourinho was charged with improper conduct after re-entering the field of play to approach match referee Chris Foy in the 90th minute of the loss at Villa Park.

The Chelsea boss denied the charge and requested a personal hearing, but the ruling was upheld on Wednesday. Mourinho was also warned with regards to his future conduct.

Foy sent off Willian for two bookable offences during the defeat, before Ramires was shown a straight red card for a foul on Karim El Ahmadi.

Mourinho was eventually sent to the stands by Foy and after the game suggested he should not be sent to referee Chelsea games in the future.

"Maybe it's helpful that the [referee's] committee doesn't send him [Foy] to our matches," Mourinho told reporters.

"I don't have the right to request [that]. It's just I think they have to analyse the situation and see if every time he has Chelsea - or not every time - but many times he has Chelsea and problems are there, I think maybe it would be a good decision."

Moyes admits Rooney gamble backfired after Bayern defeat

    388907_heroa.jpg

David Moyes admits Wayne Rooney was rushed back into the Manchester United line-up for the Champions League quarter-final defeat to Bayern Munich.

The England striker, who sustained a toe injury last week, was passed fit to take his place in United's starting XI, but could not prevent the Red Devils from exiting the competition at the Allianz Arena.

Three second-half strikes from Mario Mandzukic, Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben cancelled out Patrice Evra’s spectacular opener, and the United manager suggested afterwards that he felt forced into fielding his star player.

"I felt at times tonight he was having a struggle striking the ball but he's such a vital player for us," Moyes told reporters. "I never thought we were out of the game, I always thought we were in with a chance.

"When it was 2-1 we needed to score one more to get us to 2-2, but obviously that didn't go for us. I thought it was a bit of bad luck in that third goal.”

Manchester United were ahead for just 73 seconds before Bayern’s equaliser, and despite the Scot being pleased with the overall performance of his players, he bemoaned his side’s lack of focus from the re-start.

“If you lose a goal right after you score it makes the job really difficult. If you're a schoolboy you get told once you score make sure you don't conceded right away and we conceded too quickly," he said.

"I don't know if it was a bit of concentration after we got the goal but we had enough experience on the pitch tonight.”

United have been in each of the last 18 seasons of the Champions League, but this run would now appear at an end, with the side seven points adrift of fourth in the Premier League with five games remaining.

Schurrle: Chelsea not Champions League underdogs

    389005_heroa.jpg

Chelsea attacker Andre Schurrle denies his team are underdogs in the Champions League semi-finals.Jose Mourinho's men overturned a two-goal deficit to edge past Paris Saint-Germain in their last-eight tie on Tuesday.Awaiting in the semi-finals are Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid as Chelsea chase their second Champions League title.

And Schurrle, 23, is unfazed about who Chelsea draw on Friday for their semi-final tie."I don't think we're underdogs. We can win against every team. That's how we will manage, no matter who we get," the German told reporters.

"Every team in the semi-finals can win this. It's one step to go to the final. We'll see who we get and we'll see if we can go through."Mourinho boasts a stellar record in the Champions League, having made the semi-finals in eight of his 10 full campaigns and triumphed with Porto and Inter.

The Portuguese has still never lost a Champions League quarter-final tie, and Schurrle hailed his influence in their 2-0 second-leg win over PSG."It is unbelievable," he added. "This statistic tells you that he knows what to do. He plays a big role. We had many meetings. He knew the situation. He gave us advice," Schurrle said.

"Almost every time we've played at Stamford Bridge, we've scored two goals. We only needed two goals [against PSG]. That’s what we did. We utilised the plan."He told us to be patient - we needed patience because everybody wanted to go, go, go, go.

"Afterwards, in the dressing room there was so much emotion. Everyone was dancing, screaming."

Jones: Manchester United need to be in the Champions League

    385833_heroa.jpg

Phil Jones says Manchester United must ensure they make a swift return to the Champions League following their quarter-final exit on Wednesday night.

Goals from Mario Mandzukic, Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben cancelled out Patrice Evra's stunning opener to secure a 4-2 quarter-final aggregate win for Bayern Munich.

Jones feels United were knocked out by the best team in the competition, but relished the occasion and underlined the need for clubs of such stature testing themselves regularly against the strongest sides.

"It's huge. United need to be in the Champions League," Jones told MUTV.

"Nights like this don’t come along too often. Teams like Bayern are who you want to be playing; if you want to test yourselves against the best you have to play them. In my eyes Bayern are the best.

United are unlikely to qualify for the competition next season for the first time since 1995-96 as they currently lie seven points off fourth-placed Arsenal, but Jones is eager to ensure any absence is short-lived.

He continued: "It's disappointing now, having gone out; you look back on the season and think that if we’d won such and such a game it might have been different.

"But we’ll keep fighting until the end of the season because nights like this might not come around too often and we want to make sure we are in them as much as possible."
