Klopp 'convinced' Bayern will eliminate Madrid

    386248_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp has backed Bayern Munich to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals.

Karim Benzema's goal separates the two teams following last week's encounter at the Santiago Bernabeu after the Bavarians put in a limp offensive performance.

However, Klopp, whose BVB team were eliminated by Madrid in the last round, believes that his side's arch-rivals will come from behind to win.

"Of course I wish Bayern good luck in this game," he is quoted as saying by Sport.

"I'm still convinced that Bayern will win the tie."

Bayern and Madrid clash at the Allianz Arena at 20:45CET.

Villarreal fan given permanent ban for throwing banana at Dani Alves

    396836_heroa.jpg

Villarreal have issued a permanent ban to the supporter who threw a banana at Dani Alves in Sunday's La Liga clash with Barcelona at El Madrigal.

The Brazilian picked up and ate the fruit thrown at him from the stands as he prepared to take a corner, before later issuing ironic thanks to the offender after Barca came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2.

Villarreal have since confirmed they have revoked the fan in question's season ticket and underlined their commitment to combatting racism and discrimination.

"Villarreal CF wants to communicate that the club deeply regrets and condemns the incident that happened yesterday [Sunday] during the match against FC Barcelona in which a fan threw an object onto the field of El Madrigal," a statement on their official website read.

"Thanks to the security forces and the invaluable assistance of the Yellow crowd, the club has already identified the author and has decided to withdraw his season tickets, permanently banning his access to El Madrigal stadium.

"Once again our club would like to express its firm commitment to promoting respect, equality, sportsmanship and fair play both on and off the field and our absolute rejection of any act that is contrary to these principles, such as violence, discrimination, racism and xenophobia."

Sunday's incident prompted Alves' Barcelona and Brazil team-mate Neymar to begin a 'We're all monkeys' social media campaign to show his support for the 30-year-old, posting a picture of himself eating a banana alongside the caption.

Two own goals and a Lionel Messi strike secured a valuable comeback for Barca on Sunday, with the victory keeping their slim title hopes alive at the end of a difficult week for the club in which former coach Tito Vilanova lost his battle with cancer.

Bayern Munich 0-4 Real Madrid (Agg 0-5): Ramos and Ronaldo fire brilliant Blancos into final

    397547hp2.jpg

Real Madrid roared into the Champions League final as Sergio Ramos scored twice in a 3-0 win over holders Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

The Spain international buried two first-half headers to put Carlo Ancelotti's side 3-0 up on aggregate before Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 15th goal in this season's tournament to wrap up the win and break Lionel Messi's record for strikes in one campaign.

Ronaldo then drilled a free kick under the wall in the dying minutes of the match to cap a perfect night for the Spanish giants, who will now face Chelsea or Atletico Madrid in their first Champions League final since 2002.

The only disappointment from a wonderful evening for Real came in the 38th minute, as playmaker Xabi Alonso was booked for a rash tackle on Bastian Schweinsteiger, meaning he will miss the final.

Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer presented Real with an early opportunity as his clearance from a ball over the top went straight into the path of Gareth Bale - restored to the starting XI after illness - however, the Welshman could only fire high over the crossbar. But it did not take long for Ancelotti's men to make the crucial breakthrough, which came in the 16th minute when the unmarked Ramos met Luka Modric's perfectly placed corner with a bullet header.

And just four minutes later, Real doubled that advantage to take control of the tie as Pepe flicked Angel Di Maria's right-wing free kick towards Ramos, who netted his second goal of the game with a diving header.

Bayern did finally threaten the Real goal midway through the first half, Franck Ribery flashing an effort across the face of goal, but the visitors’ threat on the counter was perfectly illustrated shortly after by a fine break from Ronaldo, although the Portuguese could only fire wide from the edge of the area.

The hosts failed to heed the warning offered by Ronaldo, though, and he duly netted his milestone goal by coolly finishing off a scintillating team move that saw Bale charge through the heart of the Bayern defence before laying the ball off for the 29-year-old.Ronaldo then went close with an audacious effort from 40 yards following another botched Neuer clearance.

Bayern were allowed more of the ball following the restart but struggled to break down a determined and organised Real defence. Arjen Robben curled an effort narrowly wide from the edge of the area, before Toni Kross lashed a decent effort just over the bar.

However, a miserable night for Bayern coach Pep Guardiola was capped off in the 90th minute, as Ronaldo drove a low 20-yard free kick under the wall for his 16th Champions League goal of the campaign that ends Bayern's chances of winning a second straight treble.

Chelsea will exploit Atletico errors, warns Tiago

    397491_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid midfielder Tiago has warned his team-mates that Chelsea will exploit any errors in Wednesday's Champions League semi-final second leg.

The Rojiblancos were held to a 0-0 draw by the Blues at the Vicente Calderon last week as they pursue their first Champions League or European Cup triumph.
Tiago, who spent a single season at Stamford Bridge in 2004-05, does not think the team's lack of experience in the latter stages of the competition harms their chances of progression but accepts the visitors will have to eradicate any mistakes to make the final in Lisbon against Real Madrid."The teams know each other very well," the 32-year-old told reporters. "We know Chelsea are a team who expect the opponents to make a mistake, and they will take advantage of that."But we need to exploit our own qualities. We'll try to win the game and focus on how well we play.

"We are experienced. We haven't been in the Champions League for a few years, that's true, but we're feeling confident. I look at my team-mates and I have full confidence in them all. I see a team fully capable and ready to take on any team."

Tiago admits it would be a dream to play in the Champions League showpiece at the end of a season which could also see them land La Liga title."We're not thinking about mistakes. We're thinking about doing things well," the Portuguese added. "This is a great opportunity to get to a final, which is every player's dream.

"We know it'll be very difficult because Chelsea don't leave any spaces, but we need to find a solution for that. We know Chelsea will start strongly. They're well organised and will try to take advantage of set pieces.

"We'll have to do the same, and take advantage of the possession we have. We have similar virtues to them, and we'll just try to prove stronger in the end. We'll just try to play as well as we can and tap into our own qualities."

Bale: This is why I came to 'biggest club in the world' Real Madrid

    397578_heroa.jpg

Gareth Bale says Real Madrid 's 4-0 thrashing of Bayern Munich on Tuesday proved why he was right to join "the biggest club in the world" last summer.

Sergio Ramos opened the scoring on the night with two goals early in the first half before Cristiano Ronaldo scored a double of his own, breaking Lionel Messi's record for goals in a single Champions League campaign by taking his tally for the season to 16.

The 5-0 aggregate victory - following their 1-0 win at home a week ago - fires them into the final of the competition for the first time since 2002 and Bale believes the holders's style played into Madrid's hands as they moved a step closer to their 10th European title."It's a fantastic result for us," the Welshman told ITV . "I think we've been working hard, we got our tactics right and I thought we played very well tonight and deserved the win.

"I suppose they played into our hands. They always leave space on the counterattacking, which we like. We've got quick players and we have to exploit that. It was a great performance and we're happy to be in the final now. But there's still one step to go."You have to do certain jobs for the team in certain games and everyone put in 100 per cent tonight. No matter who it was, they put in a performance and it showed in the result.

"This is definitely why I came to Madrid. This is why I wanted to come to the biggest club in the world. To win trophies, to win massive games. We still haven't won it yet, we've got a difficult game in the final whoever it may be and we're looking forward to it."

Carlo Ancelotti's men will face either Chelsea or Atletico Madrid in May's Champions League final.

Lahm 'bitter' after Madrid's Bayern battering

    397582_heroa.jpg

Philipp Lahm was left "incredibly bitter" after Bayern Munich crumbled to a 5-0 aggregate Champions League semi-final exit at the hands of Real Madrid on Tuesday.

The reigning European champions headed into the second leg at the Allianz Arena with only a slender 1-0 deficit but two Sergio Ramos goals and a Cristiano Ronaldo strike quickly put Carlo Ancelotti's men firmly on the front foot.

A late Ronaldo free kick added insult to injury and sealed a 4-0 win on the night, and the Bundesliga champions' captain was highly critical of how the team played out the clash in comparison to the relatively even opening leg at Santiago Bernabeu.

"The disappointment is huge," Lahm, 30, told reporters after the defeat. "We wanted it a lot but then we were 2-0 down after 20 minutes thanks to two set pieces."This is incredibly bitter and disappointing. We believe it's better to go for zonal marking at set pieces. We went down early again, then it was 2-0. We did not play well tactically, we had an open game way too early.

"While we controlled the first leg, we gave them an end-to-end game today, that's not our way of playing. They like it though."

Madrid will now face city rivals Atletico Madrid or Chelsea in next month's final.

Madrid exposed Bayern's limitations, admits Rummenigge

    397584_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge felt his side’s limitations were exposed by Real Madrid as Pep Guardiola’s men were hammered 4-0 at Allianz Arena on Tuesday night.

Title holders Bayern came into the Champions League semi-final second leg attempting to erase a 1-0 deficit but were ruthlessly caught out at the other end as two Sergio Ramos headers and a double from Cristiano Ronaldo saw Madrid ease to victory. The nature of the loss will again raise questions about Guardiola’s philosophy and Rummenigge admitted some of Bayern's weaknesses were highlighted by Carlo Ancelotti's approach.

He told Sky : “We showed too little passion to cause problems for the opponent.
“We were unlucky to concede from two set pieces. After that it was clear that Real would probably go to the final.

“You have to state it clearly: Real Madrid is a great team at the moment. And they have shown us some of our limitations today. Real Madrid has limited our offense. And they have regularly caused trouble for our defence with their quick players.
“This was one of those matches. We must keep our nerve."
