Bayern Munich 1-0 Stuttgart: Champions leave it late to end season on a high

    article-2625037-1DB9707600000578-703_634x384.jpg

Claudio Pizarro's stoppage-time strike ensured Bayern Munich finished their Bundesliga campaign with a 1-0 win over Stuttgart.

Pep Guardiola's men were crowned champions in late March, but have seen their form tail off in recent weeks, with Stuttgart looking all set to further Bayern for much of Saturday's match.

That was until Pizarro fired in a left-footed shot from the edge of the area with the last kick of the game, as Bayern put the seal on their title-winning season before being presented with the trophy they had secured months before.

    402998hp2.jpg

The hosts dominated at the Allianz Arena throughout and were almost kept out by Stuttgart, who toiled manfully and regularly dropped 10 men behind the ball in a rigid defensive effort.

Mario Mandzukic failed in his bid to become the Bundesliga's leading scorer ahead of Borussia Dortmund's Robert Lewandowski as he was denied by a combination of good goalkeeping and wayward finishing before limping out of action in the second half.Pizarro, on as Mandzukic's replacement, was equally wasteful initially, blazing over the crossbar while unmarked in the 75th minute.

Stuttgart, whose safety was assured last week, created little going forward and have now lost 11 consecutive matches to Bayern in all competitions.

Despite the win, Bayern will have concerns over Mandzukic's fitness, while Bastian Schweinsteiger also sustained an injury and both players are now seemingly a doubt for the DFB-Pokal final against Dortmund next weekend. After a quiet opening to the game, Mandzukic had the first serious effort on goal in the 24th minute.

The Croatian, recalled to the side in place of Mario Gotze, let fly from the corner of the penalty area, but Sven Ulreich was equal to his attempt and tipped the ball around the post.

Four minutes later, Mandzukic and then Schweinsteiger both headed narrowly off target as Bayern began to assert themselves. The hosts felt they should have had a penalty shortly after the half-hour when Mandzukic's acrobatic volley cannoned off the arm of Gotoku Sakai, but referee Bastian Dankert awarded a corner.

Bayern began the second half as they had ended the first and were camped in the Stuttgart half, Arjen Robben bringing a flying save out of Ulreich shortly after the hour.

Tempers momentarily flared when Dante brought down Stuttgart substitute Cacau midway through the half, with the referee showing the Brazilian defender a yellow card after passions were calmed.

Mandzukic had hobbled off injured shortly beforehand and his replacement, Pizarro, wasted the clearest opening of the match with when he ballooned over the crossbar after being picked out by David Alaba's cutback with 15 minutes to go.
Robben was denied by Ulreich with five minutes to go before Pizarro struck from 20 yards as Bayern signed off a dominant season with a win in front of their home fans.

Valenciennes 1-2 Monaco: Late Dirar strike snatches victory for Ranieri's men

    401461hp2.jpg

A late wonder strike from Nabil Dirar saw Monaco snatch a 2-1 win over Valenciennes on Saturday night.

Valenciennes may already have been relegated, but they almost scored after just 30 seconds when Aymen Abdennour misjudged the ball in the air and Abdul Majeed Waris forced a good block from Monaco ‘keeper Sergio Romero.

Ariel Jacobs, the Valenciennes coach, had demanded his side finished this sorry campaign in "an honourable fashion" and the host club went about this match in the proper manner, forcing several corners in the opening exchanges.

In reply, Valere Germain clipped the crossbar with a shot, but this game felt like an end of season affair, with time ticking away on the 13/14 season, and similarly, counting down on Claudio Ranieri’s time in chage of the Principality.

With Champions League football secure, Monaco looked disinterested at times and toiled to find any structure to their play.

However, five minutes from half-time, the visitors took the lead. Yannick Carrasco worked an opening for Germain, and the visiting captain tucked his shot past the onrushing Nicolas Penneteau.Given how impressive Monaco have been away from home this season, second only to PSG with 35 points claimed, there was a feeling that this encounter could be over at half-time.

Valenciennes stopper Lindsay Rose – who is expected to leave the club this summer - was booked early in the second period for one robust challenge too many.

The game lacked any sense of urgency, but on 70 minutes and out of nothing, Valenciennes produced an equaliser. Maor Melikson worked his way in from the left, his cut back flat-footing the third best defence in Ligue 1, enabling Tongo Hamed Doumbia to side foot a shot past Romero.Within a minute, Carl Medjani - against his parent club - came close with a shot and Monaco, having looked unperturbed, suddenly appeared rattled.

Their defending became desperate at times as Abdennour and Uwa Elderson Echiejile were yellow carded in quick succession.Abdennour’s abysmal evening continued when his slip left Waris in the clear, but he fired wildly over when a winner looked on.

It proved a costly miss for the hosts, as three minutes from time Nabil Dirar ran at the Valenciennes back line, before cutting in on his left foot and firing a long distance drive high past the stationary Penneteau.

Lille 1-3 Paris Saint-Germain: Marquinhos and Lucas Moura offer Scolari response as champions set Ligue 1 points record

Marquinhos and Lucas Moura both got on the scoresheet as Paris Saint-Germain saw off Lille 3-1 and set a new points record in Ligue 1.

Marquinhos opened the scoring for the newly-crowned champions in the 41st minute, shortly after Marvin Martin had been dismissed for a dangerous challenge on Yohan Cabaye.

Cabaye had to be stretchered from the field under the closed roof of Stade Pierre-Mauroy, casting doubt over his involvement in the World Cup, with coach Didier Deschamps set to name his preliminary squad next week.

Lucas Moura then put PSG two goals up in the 65th minute, before substitute Blaise Matuidi grabbed his fifth league goal of the season late on.Jonathan Delaplace grabbed a stoppage-time goal for Lille, whose bid for Champions League football will now go down to the wire after fourth-placed Saint-Etienne cruised to a 3-1 win at Nantes to close the gap between the sides to two points.

The league’s previous record for a single season was 84 points – set by Lyon in 2005-06 – and PSG now stand two points clear of that marker with a match still to play.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic returned from injury to make his first start in more than a month, but there was no place for Edinson Cavani in the squad amid reports the Uruguay international is unhappy at the Parc des Princes.

And it was Ibrahimovic who had the first opportunity to break the deadlock – his drive from close range bouncing over the crossbar via the leg of defender Simon Kjaer.Franck Beria went down in the penalty area under the challenge of Lucas Digne in the 13th minute, but referee Ruddy Buquet waved away Lille's protests, as well as PSG's counter-claims the defender had gone down too easily.

Nolan Roux sent an effort wide of the right-hand post off the leg of Zoumana Camara midway through the half, although neither goalkeeper was being made to work too hard as the defences held firm.

Enyeama made a spectacular diving save from Cabaye shortly after the half-hour mark, but the former Lille man was writhing around on the turf moments later after a reckless challenge from Martin.

Having initially booked Martin, Buquet appeared to change his mind and soon had the red card held aloft.

PSG almost instantly took advantage of the extra man as Marquinhos leapt brilliantly to head home after Enyeama had palmed away Lucas' original effort.Idrissa Gueye then scooped over as Lille looked to pull level early on in the second period, before Marko Basa spurned two good opportunities.

But Lucas ended Lille's challenge when he slid the ball past Enyeama before setting up Matuidi with a fine throughball, allowing the Frenchman seal PSG's record in style and securing a 26th league win of the season - equalling another Ligue 1 milestone.

Substitute Delaplace's strike at the death proved scant consolation, as Lille continue to sweat over their involvement in Europe's elite club competition next season.

Inter 4-1 Lazio: Palacio at the double as Zanetti's San Siro farewell ends in victory

    403137hp2.jpg

Rodrigo Palacio struck twice as Inter blitzed Lazio 4-1 and ensured Javier Zanetti's San Siro farewell ended with a victory.

Both sides came into the clash needing points in their quests for European qualification, but all the attention was on the most decorated player in Inter's history.

The 40-year-old, who is Argentina's most-capped player with 145 appearances, has lifted 16 trophies with the club since joining from Banfield in 1995, but his 857th outing for the club had to wait until the second half.

Initially the hosts appeared to be in trouble as Giuseppe Biava put Lazio ahead in the second minute, but Inter battled back and went into the break 3-1 up thanks to two goals from Palacio and Mauro Icardi's strike.

Zanetti was introduced to much fanfare just after the break and although Lazio crafted numerous opportunities in the second period, Hernanes sealed the result against his former club with a stunning effort from range.Victory means Inter are all but guaranteed a spot in the Europa League, with defeat for Lazio ending their hopes of a top-six finish.

With an expectant home crowd displaying banners of thanks for Zanetti, coach Walter Mazzarri was greeted with a frosty reception from the home faithful as word of the Argentinian's absence from the XI spread. And things got even worse for him in just the second minute as Lorik Cana headed Bruno Pereirinha's free-kick back across goal for Biava to prod in.

Lazio barely held the lead for five minutes, however, as Palacio raced on to Mateo Kovacic's defence-splitting throughball and deftly poked a clever finish past Etrit Berisha.

Proceedings quietened down after a frantic start, but Kovacic produced another moment of magic in the 34th minute, delivering a delightful outside-of-the-foot pass to Icardi, who coolly slotted home from inside the area.

And Inter doubled their advantage just three minutes later when Yuto Nagatomo's left-wing cross evaded the Lazio defence, allowing Palacio to stroke the ball beyond Berisha's reach.

The second half endured a muted start as the inevitable arrival of Zanetti was anticipated and Mazzarri finally unleashed his captain in the 52nd minute, drawing a vociferous ovation from the crowd. However, Lazio were in no mood to stand around and appreciate the retiring midfielder as Samir Handanovic denied Biava a second with an acrobatic save to his right, before Balde Keita inexcusably sliced a half-volley well over the crossbar from 14 yards.

The visitors' pressure continued into the final stages, but any threat of an unlikely comeback was thwarted with 11 minutes to go as Hernanes rifled in an unstoppable left-footed effort from 20 yards.

Zanetti was the game's final focus as he consoled a supporter who had run onto the pitch and approached him - an act met with applause from all sides of San Siro as the emotional fan was escorted from the field.

Guardiola: I'm proud of my players

    403033_heroa.jpg

Pep Guardiola was "proud" of his Bayern Munich players after they finished their Bundesliga-winning campaign with a 1-0 victory over Stuttgart.

Claudio Pizarro came off the bench at the Allianz Arena on Saturday to net a stoppage-time winner with the last kick of the game as Bayern finished the season 19 points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund.Bayern will have concerns over Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mario Mandzukic, both of whom limped off during the victory, especially with a DFB-Pokal final against Dortmund to come next weekend.

Immediately after the game, however, Guardiola was in celebratory mood, having been showered in beer and having dropped the trophy in the aftermath of Bayern's on-pitch presentation.

"I'm very proud of this team and these players," he told reporters."[The beer] is cold! It's all okay now after having a proper shower. I'm happy!"On Schweinsteiger, Guardiola remained positive and hopes the Germany midfielder will be fit for next Saturday's clash in Berlin.

He added: "Bastian had problems with his patella tendon but we still have six days [before the cup final]."

Pellegrini's calmness helps Manchester City - Silva

    402881_heroa.jpg

Manuel Pellegrini's laid-back persona has helped Manchester City's players deal with the pressure of the Premier League title run-in, according to David Silva.

City head into the final game of the season on Sunday against West Ham at the Etihad Stadium hoping to avoid any last-day drama, knowing they need only a point to almost certainly claim the title.

Cool heads will be needed and Pellegrini will be on hand to give his players some words of wisdom on how best to keep calm - a trait that Silva thinks has been invaluable during the Chilean's first season in charge.

"His calmness has been obvious," Silva told the club's official website. "He's added that to the whole club. And it really helps us at difficult moments."It's nice to have that calm attitude around you when things get tough."

On Pellegrini's overall impact since he succeeded Roberto Mancini, Silva added: "He's made it a happy place."He's brought a joy and happiness - also to our style of play. We are attack-minded and we score lots of goals.

"He's made us competitive in every competition. We've gone further in them this season. He's given us that extra push and taken us one step further."Having Manuel here has helped me personally, too. It's been really good for me. My style of play is more suited to an attacking style.

"He's helped me develop as a player. You always want to improve as an individual. It's been a good year for me."

Simeone: No pressure to win La Liga

    402865_heroa.jpg

Diego Simeone insists Atletico Madrid are not feeling the pressure of standing on the brink of a first La Liga title since 1996.

The Argentine was a member of the playing squad the last time they were crowned Spanish champions and he goes into Sunday's home fixture with Malaga knowing a win, combined with Barcelona failing to beat Elche, will see Atletico pick up a 10th league crown.

Despite being so close to glory, Simeone claims his Atletico players are in a relaxed frame of mind. "There is no pressure, only responsibility," he said.

"This is a great moment. All of us who work in football want to reach important situations like this one."We will live the moment as we should and we will continue working in order to continue doing things well.

"Our way of playing has been based on the collective unit and the team for a long time."We need to keep going, without looking ahead and hoping. That is the best way to prepare for this period.

"Our future and destiny is marked out for us moving forward. We just need to do what we have to do."Atletico still have doubts over the fitness of Diego Costa, who has been struggling with a hamstring injury, and Simeone is unsure whether the 36-goal striker will be available for Sunday.

"Costa is feeling better and more comfortable," he said."We will do some tests on him before the match to see whether he is ready."

Sampdoria 2-5 Napoli: Insigne and Hamsik on target as Benitez's men emerge victorious in goalfest

    403489hp2.jpg

Napoli recorded a thumping 5-2 away win over Sampdoria in Sunday afternoon's Serie A encounter in Genoa.

Duvan Zapata and Lorenzo Insigne gifted the guests a two-goal lead before Eder pegged one back for the home side, only for Jose Callejon to make it 3-1 shortly after.

Marek Hamsik then poured even more misery on Samp after the break, with Shkodran Mustafi's own goal making it five for Rafa Benitez's men before Pawel Wszolek eventually netted the final goal of the game.

The away side started the match with attacking intentions and broke the deadlock after 19 minutes of play. The Sampdoria defence failed to clear a corner kick and Zapata tapped home from close range to make it 1-0.

Napoli continued to dominate after the opener and Insigne doubled his side's lead shortly before the half-hour mark. Callejon set up the young winger, who beat Vincenzo Fiorillio with a shot from outside the area.

Sampdoria refused to give up, though, and immediately pegged one back via Eder, who beat Pepe Reina with an accurate shot via the upright.

Callejon then surprised Fiorillo with a clever free kick that bounced right in front of the Samp goalkeeper to restore Napoli's two-goal lead. Some excellent work from Zapata after the break saw Hamsik show up in a dangerous position and the Slovakia international kept his calm to score his first Serie A goal since November 2013.

Things only got worse for Sampdoria in the remainder of the game, with Mustafi's unfortunate own goal after a Callejon cross sending Napoli four goals up.Wszolek made it 5-2 in the closing stages of the game with a fine left-footed finish, but it was too little, too late for the hosts.

Napoli are secured third place in the Serie A table with one more game to go, while Sampdoria currently sit twelfth and will finish in mid-table.
