Arsenal fans can expect a busy summer - Wenger

    413747_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger has told Arsenal fans to "expect" a busy summer as the manager aims to strengthen his squad after penning a three-year contract extension.

The Frenchman ended months of uncertainty on Friday to tie him to the club until 2017 and is now keen to build upon the club's FA Cup victory from earlier in May.

First-choice right-back Bacary Sagna has confirmed he is set to leave the club, while Lukasz Fabianski is set to join Swansea City next month, and Wenger is confident of starting a new era at the Emirates Stadium.

When asked if fans should expect summer business, Wenger said: "Yes. What I can promise is that we work very hard on a market that is very, very congested with many people who have a lot of money.

"But we have a big advantage, players want to join us and if we find the right quality I'm sure we can strengthen the team."

Arsenal ended a nine-year wait for silverware with a 3-2 win over Hull City at Wembley on May 17 and Wenger feels the triumph can kick-start a new period of success for the club.

"It's time for another [great Arsenal team to emerge]. It's the start of a new team and I believe [the FA Cup] victory was crucial in that belief," he said.

"We have shown signs the whole season that we can be a great side and now it's [important] of course to have another successful season.

"We know we have to... have a successful June and July, that's where you strengthen the team.

"It's very important that we are good now in the next two months until the end of August, that we can give to the team some more quality and go into next season with the belief we got from [the FA Cup] win."

Puyol retires to take up new role at Barcelona

    405126_heroa.jpg

Former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol has retired from the game and will take up a new role at Camp Nou next season, the Catalan club announced on Friday.

Puyol played 593 official first-team games for Barca between 1998 and this year, but had already announced his decision to leave the club this summer following several seasons blighted by knee problems.

The former Spain defender, who is 36, had been considering a move to a smaller side to extend his playing days, but has instead opted to take up a new post at Barca alongside sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta.

"I want to say thank you to FC Barcelona for everything they have given me and also for this new opportunity," Puyol said in a statement on the club's official website.

"I have always played football and I tried to do that as well as possible. I will do the same here," he added. "I need some time to rest and some more treatment on my knee, but I'm really excited by this new chapter."

Puyol will work with Zubizarreta, who is hoping to sign several players for the Catalan club this summer, including a replacement for the popular defender.

"Puyol joins us in the football area and we will try to take advantage and learn from all his experience," Zubizarreta explained. "He'll be an assistant on the sporting side and he'll work with me in all of the club's projects - both internal and external.

"He'll be close to all of the teams, it's a unique opportunity. For a couple of years we have been talking about what is best for him and I'm sure he'll soon see what it is that he likes doing the most."

Hierro: Diego Costa is vital for Spain

    406857_heroa.jpg

Former Spain captain Fernando Hierro believes Diego Costa's absence would considerably weaken Vicente del Bosque's side for their World Cup defence.

The Atletico Madrid striker - who made his only appearance for Spain to date in March - has been troubled by a hamstring injury that curtailed his involvement in last weekend's Champions League final and is in danger of missing this summer's tournament.

Despite having earned just one cap, Hierro reckons that Costa could play a key role in Brazil and believes the Brazil-born forward is as important to Spain as Luis Suarez and Radamel Falcao are to Uruguay and Colombia respectively.

"The loss of a player like Suarez, Costa or Falcao would be a huge blow," he told AS."They're very important for their national teams and I wish they were all there.
"It would be good for the competition. Strikers are artists whose goals decide matches."

Hierro then went on to urge Del Bosque to take a gamble on the 25-year-old forward if he is close to fitness and is confident Spain can become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to win back-to-back tournaments.

"There were four players that weren't certain to go in 2010 and they were the stars who put the finishing touches before that winning goal," he referred to Jesus Navas, Fernando Torres, Cesc Fabregas and Andres Iniesta."I'm optimistic. I think a lot of this generation."

Neymar is Brazil's great hope, says Ronaldo

    413566_heroa.jpg

Former Brazil international Ronaldo - the World Cup's all-time leading goalscorer and two-time winner - has big hopes for the national team at this summer's tournament and feels Barcelona forward Neymar can make the difference for the hosts.

The 37-year-old believes Brazil, who face Croatia, Mexico and Cameroon in Group A, come in with more confidence than the victorious 2002 team he was a part of and thinks home advantage will be a huge advantage.

"Brazil are entering the World Cup with much more confidence than we had when we entered the World Cup in 2002," Ronaldo told reporters."I believe that the squad we have for 2014 is really strong. We have a balanced team, full of a lot of talent.

"Neymar is a fantastic kid, so talented, he is our great hope for the future."Another thing is that we are playing at home, this makes me really wish I were a few years younger and 45 pounds lighter. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Playing at home in front of our fans."

Ronaldo is in danger of losing his goalscoring record to Germany international Miroslav Klose, who has netted one fewer World Cup goal with 14, but he hopes his name will remain in the record books a little longer."I wouldn't say that I am not sleeping because of the chance of Klose breaking the record, but I am sending some bad towards him, perhaps just a little.

"My friends and fans are doing the same. However, whatever I do doesn't really matter, records are made to be broken by others."I don't have this ambition of being the biggest scorer forever, I don't think it is possible to do that."

Ronaldo then went on to admit he is ashamed the local organising committee have only delivered on '30 percent' of what they promised.Delays in stadium construction, infrastructure issues and protests have marred the lead-up to the World Cup, which starts on June 12.

"I'm ashamed for the Brazilian people who were expecting big investments and a great legacy for them, for us."We promised to rebuild airports and improve transport and infrastructure. I am sorry for all the things we promised and have not completed.

"We have some numbers - only 30% of all the things that were promised will be done in time for the World Cup to get underway. That number is my only concern, for that I'm ashamed.

"The Brazilian people are the ones affected by our failure."

Valbuena: France can surprise at World Cup

    413624_heroa.jpg

Mathieu Valbuena has backed France to cause a shock at this summer World Cup and claim the second title in their history.

After finishing second to Spain in the qualifying campaign, Didier Deschamps' side had to beat Ukraine in the play-offs to book their place at the finals, but Marseille forward Valbuena is confident they will shine in Brazil.France were humiliated at the 2010 World Cup as they failed to get out of their group, yet Valbuena insists the current squad are determined to do better this time around and give the fans something to cheer about after previous disappointments.

"Winning the World Cup would be legendary," he told L'Equipe. "There are teams better equipped than us, but we believe we can win it."Winning our group is within our reach, but we want to go as far as possible, put the passion in the heart of our fans.

"They do not expect us to win. I am confident that we will succeed."The 29-year-old has made 32 appearances for the national team since making his debut in May 2010.

France meet Switzerland, Ecuador and Honduras at the 2014 World Cup.

Real Madrid hit with partial stadium closure following racist incident

    332704_heroa.jpg

Uefa has ordered the partial closure of the Santiago Bernabeu for one match following racist behaviour by Real Madrid fans during the 1-0 Champions League win over Bayern Munich in April.

The Spanish giants recorded a narrow win over the Bundesliga giants that eventually set them on their way to Champions League glory, but part of their stadium will be shut down for their next home game in European competitions following incidents that took place during the game.

"The Uefa Control and Disciplinary Body has handed down sanctions to Real Madrid following incidents during their Champions League semi-final first leg against Bayern Munichen in the Spanish capital on 23 April," an official statement reads.

"Following the charge of racist behaviour by Real Madrid supporters during the match (Article 14 of the Uefa Disciplinary Regulations), the Control and Disciplinary Body has ordered the partial closure of the Santiago Bernabeu for one match. More specifically, sectors 120 and 122 of the stadium will be closed for the club's next Uefa competition home game.

"Real Madrid are obliged to display a banner with the wording 'No to Racism' in those sectors."

The fight against racism is a high priority for Uefa and European football's governing body has a zero-tolerance policy towards racism and discrimination, both on the pitch and in the stands.

All forms of racist behaviour are considered serious offences against the disciplinary regulations and are severely punished.

PSG keen to cash in on Pastore

    386507_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain are keen to cash in on Javier Pastore this summer and have offered the attacking midfielder to Roma, Inter and Atletico Madrid.

The Ligue 1 champions are looking to offload some fringe players in order to balance the books and comply with Uefa's Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations and they are desperate to recoupe some of the €40 million they paid for the Argentine three years ago before his contract expires in 2016.

However, neither of the approached clubs has shown an interest in signing Pastore at this point following the 24-year-old's disappointing 2013-14 campaign.

Pastore made just 18 Ligue 1 starts all season and has mainly been warming the bench since the arrival of Laurent Blanc last summer.

The midfielder himself is keen to stay at PSG, but the French giants are ready to cut their losses and will accept an offer in the region of €15m.

PSG were hit with a €60 million fine for breaching the FFP regulations earlier in May, but they have since stressed that they will continue to buy the players they want, reaching an agreement with Chelsea over the transfer of David Luiz for €49m last week.

Manchester City closing in on Fernando signing

    408375_heroa.jpg

Manchester City are confident of sealing the €14.8 million signing of Porto midfielder Fernando in the coming week, Goal understands.

Director of football Txiki Begiristain has been in Portugual recently to negotiate a fee for the Brazil-born star, a player the club first registered an interest in in January.

And the Premier League champions believe a deal will be concluded soon, with Fernando expected to fly in to Manchester to complete his move in the coming days.

Fernando signed a new contract with Porto after City failed with a deadline-day bid in the last transfer window to sign the midfielder and his centre-back team-mate Eliaquim Mangala.

However, this was seen largley as a tactic to guarantee Porto a higher transfer fee - and it was agreed by both parties at the time that Fernando could move on this summer if an acceptable offer was made.

There has also been interest in the player from a number of Serie A clubs led by AC Milan but City are confident he wants to join them and of finalising a deal imminently.

The 26-year-old, who was recently denied the opportunity by Fifa to representing Portugal, has been targeted by City for his midfield anchorman qualities. He was a regular for Porto last season, making 36 appearances for the third-placed club.

Fernando and Bacary Sagna are expected to become City's first two signings of the summer as Manuel Pellegrini and Begiristain begin reshaping the title-winning squad.

As was revealed earlier, Sagna is in advanced talks to join City on a free transfer after rejecting a contract extension at Arsenal.

Thiago: Guardiola is an amazing coach

    412718_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara has taken the time to praise head coach Pep Guardiola and has hailed the former Barcelona boss' work with promising youngsters in particular.

Thiago was reunited with Guardiola at Bayern this season following his transfer from Barca last summer and the Spain international has nothing but positive words for his mentor.

"Guardiola is keeping a close eye on all the young players. He is an amazing coach," Thiago told GQ.

"When he took over at Barcelona, he immediately implemented the style of play he had used at the B team the year before.

"When I was promoted to the senior team at Barca, I obviously had a lot of respect for all the big names. But I already knew how to play football."

The 23-year-old then went on to compare the Bundesliga with La Liga and stressed that there are plenty of differences between both leagues.

"The game is a lot slower and technical in Spain. In Germany on the other hand, the style of play is much faster and more physical."

Everybody would like to have Koke, admits Barcelona president

    413170_heroa.jpg

Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu has revealed that the Catalans are keen to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke, but has acknowledged that they might face a tough task to lure the Spain international away from his current club.

The 22-year-old was one of the revelations of the 2013-14 season and played a key role in their La Liga title and their successful Champions League campaign, thus attracting the interest of a number of bigger clubs, including Barcelona.

Nevertheless, Koke has a contract with Atletico until the summer of 2018 and the Spanish champions will not let go of the midfielder on the cheap.

"Koke is an absolutely spectacular player," Bartomeu was quoted as saying by El Mundo Deportivo.

"He has had a great season and every club would love to have him.

"But I am sure that Atletico will want to hold on to him after such a great season."

Bartomeu also had his say on the future of Javier Mascherano and Xavi at Barcelona and insisted that the duo will not be going anywhere.

"Mascherano is a key player for Barcelona and will continue his career at Camp Nou.

"Xavi has a contract until 2016 and has two more years to go here. The coach counts on him for the future. He has been with the team for 16 years."

'Chelsea want Filipe Luis, but Atletico don't want to sell' - agent

    394266_heroa.jpg

The agent of Filipe Luis has confirmed that Chelsea are interested in signing the defender, but has warned that Atletico Madrid are reluctant to sell the full-back.

The 28-year-old played an integral part in Diego Simeone's side in the 2013-14 season as Los Rojiblancos completed a dramatic final day Liga title triumph and finished runners-up in the Champions league after losing the final to Real Madrid.

But while Luis' agent Garcia Quilon comfirmed the Premier League side's interest in the left-back, he believes the Blues will face a fight to prise the Brazilian away from an Atleti side determined to keep their best players.

"The interest is there, but Atletico don't want to sell," said Quilon when asked about the Blues’ interest.

"They want to keep every player they can for next season. Then, we'll see what's happening with different players, but Atletico don't have any intention to sell anyone."

Luis has spent the last four year at the Vicente Claderon after moving from Deportivo, and is currently on Brazil's standby list for this summer's World Cup.

Jose Mourinho is looking for a left-back after letting Ashley Cole leave the club on a free transfer, having played Cesar Azpilicueta - a natural right-back - there for much of last season.

Atletico conceded just 28 goals in 36 games on their way to the Spanish title, and Luis' experience and physical presence would fit the mould of Mourinho's recent signings.

Luke Shaw is also a target for the Blues, but it has been revealed that Manchester United are favourites to sign the Southampton starlet due to both Chelsea and Manchester City having to rein in their spending in light of Uefa's Financial Fair Play regualations.

Ronaldo is a World Cup matchwinner - Reus

Marco Reus has stressed that Germany will be wary of matchwinner Cristiano Ronaldo when they face Portugal in the World Cup.

Joachim Low's men face the fellow Euro 2012 semi-finalists in their opening game of Group G hoping to gain an advantage ahead of further clashes with Ghana and USA.

Reus, who is featuring in his first World Cup this summer, stressed the quality of the Portugal captain and all-time top goalscorer and believes every tie in Brazil will be tough.

"Portugal are an extremely strong team, with an outstanding individual player: Cristiano Ronaldo" the Borussia Dortmund attacker said in a new self-interview to mark the launch of PUMA Tricks. "He can decide a match on his own.

"USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann has lots of experience and he has built a solid team. As we saw at the World Cup in 2006 [when he coached Germany to the semis], he can take teams far in the tournament.

"There won't be an easy opponent."

    412707_heroa.jpg

Reus is confident that he and his PUMA Tricks boots can make their mark in Brazil
Reus is in contention to be a key player in the starting XI for Germany this summer and insists he always had faith that he could feature in the tournament and play a role in winning the trophy.

"Yes, of course [I always believed I'd play in the World Cup], you have to believe in yourself," the German added. "It's vital not just in football but in day-to-day life.

"You also need a bit of luck, you need talent and determination. But you definitely need belief, that's for sure. It's my first World Cup so I'm feeling really motivated. I'm eager to play a big part and start as many games as possible."

Reus is among a number of global superstars who will be sporting the new PUMA Tricks boots in Brazil this summer.

Immobile talks are progressing, say Dortmund

    411636_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc has confirmed that the club have held promising talks over a deal for Torino's Ciro Immobile.

The striker, who was top scorer in Serie A in the 2013-14 campaign with 22 goals, has long been linked with a summer switch to Signal Iduna Park, with Jurgen Klopp claiming earlier this week that he would do "everything possible" to sign the 24-year-old.

A move for the Italy international - who is part of Cesare Prandelli's provisional World Cup squad - has always been complicated by the fact he is co-owned by Serie A champions Juventus.

However, reports emerged late on Thursday in Italy that both Juve and Torino - for whom Immobile was so impressive last season - had reached an agreement over ownership rights and had subsequently finalised a deal to sell the striker to Dortmund for a fee of around €19 million.

Zorc was not willing to confirm that a transfer had been agreed, but he did confirm to Kicker that there had been "good talks" held between the parties concerned.

Immobile left Torino officials disgruntled earlier in the spring when he admitted publicly that he would be interested in a move to the 2012 Bundesliga champions in order to secure Champions League football, though the Serie A outfit have always been adamant they wish to keep him.

Dortmund are in the market for offensive reinforcements after seeing Robert Lewandowski sign for rivals Bayern Munich and have already reached an agreement to sign Adrian Ramos from Hertha this summer.

Liverpool close in on Lambert signing

    413416_heroa.jpg

Liverpool are closing in on a deal for Southampton striker Rickie Lambert, Goal understands.

The Reds have made an offer for the England international that could rise to £9 million as Brendan Rodgers looks to supplement his first-choice attacking line of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge with proven Premier League quality.

Lambert's record of 13 goals in 37 games in England's top flight last season saw him finish above the likes of Robin van Persie and Alvaro Negredo in the scoring charts and just four behind Manchester United star Wayne Rooney.

Rodgers has been keen to bolster his attacking options to ease the goalscoring burden on Suarez and Sturridge, who scored 52 Premier League goals between them last season, with the Reds' other recognised striker Iago Aspas having struggled to make an impact at Anfield.

Lambert's strength and ability in the air will provide a different option for Rodgers, with the Southampton forward likely to be given plenty of first-team action as Liverpool look to cope with the demands of juggling Champions League football.

A move to the Merseyside club, whom he has supported since he was a boy, would represent the latest chapter in a remarkable 12 months for the Saints star.

The former Bristol Rovers striker, who has played in all four divisions in England, scored on his international debut against Scotland back in August and his performances for Southampton over the season have seen him earn a place in Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad.

And, with Lambert turning 33 in February, Southampton are unlikely to stand in the way of a dream move to Anfield, with a fee that could rise to £9m representing a significant investment on the figure in the region of £1m they paid to sign him back in 2009.

Manchester City monitor Fabregas as Yaya Toure situation deteriorates

    412540_heroa.jpg

Manchester City are keeping tabs on Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas as the club's relationship with Yaya Toure becomes increasingly strained, Goal understands.

Earlier this month it was revealed that the Catalan giants have put Arsenal and Manchester United on alert by preparing to listen to offers for Fabregas this summer.

But City are also monitoring the 27-year-old's situation, particularly in light of recent comments by Toure and his agent Dimitri Seluk which have cast doubt on the Ivorian's future at the club.

Last week Seluk claimed Toure felt disrespected and "very upset" after allegedly being ignored by City's owners on his 31st birthday when the squad arrived in United Arab Emirates to celebrate their Premier League title triumph.

Toure has since publicly endorsed his agent's comments and escalated tensions further on Tuesday by admitting it would be "an honour" to play for Paris Saint-Germain in an interview with France Football, though later clarified that he merely enjoyed being "coveted" by a club of the French champions' standing.

But City are losing patience with Toure and are determined not to be bullied into giving the Ivorian an improvement on his current €280k-a-week contract, which was agreed only last summer and runs until 2017.

In fact, there is a growing sense that the Premier League champions will not put up a huge fight to keep their star midfielder if the right bid comes in, despite a remarkable return of 21 goals and nine assists in 42 matches in all competitions this season.

At 27, Fabregas is four years younger than Toure and the Spain international will sit down for talks with senior Barcelona officials this summer as he enters the final two years of his current contract.

United - who tabled two bids for Fabregas last summer - retain an interest in the player, as do Arsenal, who have first refusal and a buy-back clause believed to be set at the fixed price of €29 million.

Arsene Wenger explored the possibility of exercising the first-option clause last summer, and is understood to have talked on the phone "quite a bit" with his former captain about the prospect of a return to north London.

Fabregas joined Barcelona from Arsenal for €40m in the summer of 2011 but struggled find a regular starting position in his first two seasons, both under Pep Guardiola and the late Tito Vilanova.

The 27-year-old enjoyed more prominent status under Tata Martino this term, notching nine goals and 14 assists in 45 appearances in all competitions as the Catalan giants endured a rare trophyless campaign.

But he has found himself singled out by a section of Barcelona fans during the team's struggles and was left out of photographs promoting the club's new kit earlier this month, further fuelling speculation over his future.

However, president Josep Maria Bartomeu has dismissed reports linking Fabregas to a move away this summer, insisting: "We don't want to sell players. Barca do not want to sell Cesc Fabregas, or see other players leave in the market."

Meanwhile, Toure has publicly admitted he would like to retire at Camp Nou, where he enjoyed three hugely successful years before joining City for €32m in the summer of 2010.

But Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta played down reports linking the club with a move for the Ivorian on May 21, saying: "I won't comment on stories that come from Twitter. It's a wonderful world, but we deal with reality."

The story behind Wenger's new contract: 18 months in the making

    406932_heroa.jpg

The story of Arsene Wenger's contract renewal began in December 2012 during one of the stormiest periods of his 18-year Arsenal reign.

The team had slumped to 10th in the Premier League table following a 2-0 home defeat to Swansea City that was met with howls of disapproval from home supporters. It was their lowest league position at this juncture of the season for two decades.

Wenger responded by giving some of his under-performing players a rare dressing down afterwards in the confines of the Emirates Stadium changing rooms. Skipper Thomas Vermaelen, Gervinho and Carl Jenkinson were singled out for criticism.

Supporters were being more openly critical of their once-revered manager than ever before but he remained untouchable in the eyes of his employers.

With qualification to the knockout stages of the Champions League already secured, Wenger was approached by the board to arrange a time to open discussions over a new deal.

The response from the Frenchman, whose terms still had 18 months to run at that point, was that he was in no hurry and would wait until the end of the season.

With Arsenal trophyless since 2005, the domestic cup competitions had taken on far greater significance to the club. The Capital One Cup, for so long a secondary competition which Wenger would use to blood the youngsters, represented a great chance to lift some silverware but the north Londoners suffered an embarrassing exit from the competition in mid-December at the quarter-final stage when a virtually full-strength side lost on penalties to League Two Bradford City.

Wenger, while maintaining his public stance that he always honoured his contracts, began to harbour private reservations about his future. There was even a sense within the inner sanctum that he had 'lost' the players, regarded as the point of no return for top-level managers.

However, Arsenal rallied either side of the new year and, by the time of the Champions League return, he was ready to cast the doubts aside and open talks on a contract extension.

Gunners chiefs, led by Denver-based American owner Stan Kroenke, retained complete faith in the Frenchman. They put far greater store in his record of top-four finishes and ability to navigate the group stages of the Champions League year after year than the trophy void which had begun during the cash-sapping move to the Emirates.

The pressure from the fans increased on Wenger following a miserable few days in which consecutive home defeats to Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup and Bayern Munich in the Champions League all but ended Arsenal's trophy ambitions for another season.

The day before the Munich match a national newspaper had led its back page with a report that the Gunners were ready to offer Wenger a two-year contract extension. The Frenchman, normally such a relaxed and unflappable figure in his pre-match media briefings, reacted with uncharacteristic anger to what most would consider to be a positive story. The pressure was getting to him.

Nevertheless, the support from the board remained absolute. With Arsenal's top-four hopes on a knife-edge in April 2013, Kroenke made it clear that he wanted Wenger to sign a new deal irrespective of whether the club clinched a lucrative Champions League place.

Arsenal maintained Wenger's 100 per cent record of top-four finishes on the final day of the season and preliminary talks on a new contract began over the summer.

One point of conflict was Wenger's desire to join forces once again with David Dein, his close friend and former ally, on transfer deals and contract negotiations. Kroenke, remembering how Dein had teamed up with Alisher Usmanov after being ousted from the board in 2007 before selling his stake for £75 million to the Russian billionaire, refused to bow to this request.

At the end of last September, Kroenke gave his full endorsement to the Frenchman remaining in charge for "the long term".

In turn, following an excellent start to the new season, Wenger gave a clear indication that he wanted to sign new terms which would take him into his third decade at the club. "The good thing with me, if I have one quality, you don't need a lot of talks to extend the contract I have," the manager said. "[I will sign] when we find time. I don't think that's the most important problem at the moment."

In October, Wenger agreed in principle the terms of a two-year contract extension that would keep him at the club until 2016. Intriguingly, he rejected the club's offer of a pay rise and it was settled that the fresh agreement would be on the same £7.5m-a-year terms as Wenger's existing contract.

The indications were that Wenger would soon put pen to paper. On several occasions either side of Christmas, word went around the club that the manager was about to sign the contract on the table. Each time he held back, despite Arsenal's lengthy run at the Premier League summit and their success in once again reaching the Champions League knockout stages.

Publicly, Arsenal maintained a wall of silence bar a few soothing words from Ivan Gazidis in January at a press conference confirming Puma as their new kit supplier.

The chief executive expressed total confidence that Wenger would extend beyond 2014. "We are comfortable in the position and relaxed about it. Arsene will be extending with us and at the right time we will make that announcement," he declared.

Yet, as the weeks went by and the landslide defeats in marquee matches piled up, the uncertainty around Wenger's future grew.

No one at the club seemed able to answer why a manager who was out of contract on June 30 and who had agreed a lucrative package to stay refused to put pen to paper. Wenger's media briefings offered little insight, with the Frenchman neatly sidestepping the question week after week.

The darkest period came following an abject 3-0 defeat at Everton on April 6, which ended Arsenal's shaky title challenge and left them fighting for a top-four spot. Again.

Even some of Wenger's longest-standing allies were now in the dark about the manager's intentions. He shut himself away in the immediate aftermath of the Everton defeat and, for the first time, staff felt that he might do the unthinkable and walk at the end of the season.

The anxiety spread to the boardroom. Alternative options to the man responsible for the team for a remarkable 18 years were now actively considered.

There was little appetite for wholesale change. Contact was made with Louis van Gaal, who had rejected an offer from Tottenham but was yet to agree a deal with Manchester United. Coincidentally or not, two of the Netherlands coach's former colleagues from the Dutch FA were due to start at the Arsenal academy on July 1. The possibility of promoting assistant manager Steve Bould was also discussed.

Wenger told the club that he would stay only if his twin targets were met - a top-four finish and FA Cup success.

Results improved and so did Wenger's mood. His targets were finally met on an emotional day at Wembley as Arsenal came from two goals down against outsiders Hull City to end their nine-year trophy drought.

Yet there was to be another twist to the 18-month saga.

Keen to avoid a repeat of the saga of recent months in two seasons' time, Arsenal have extended their contract offer to three years and the deal has been presented as such.

Whether he stays to the end of that contract or not, by finally signing the agreement Wenger has ensured that he will extend his spell with the club into a remarkable third decade and ended one of the longest contract sagas of all.
