Barcelona and Chelsea moving to sign Koke

    Koke-Atletico-Madrid_3061655.jpg

Chelsea and Barcelona are both involved in moves to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke, according to Sky sources.Barcelona see him as a replacement for Cesc Fabregas, who they are looking to offload over the summer. But Chelsea are also taking steps to bring Koke to Stamford Bridge as Jose Mourinho looks to further strengthen his squad for next season.

The 22-year-old Spain international has been at Atletico all his career and played a key role this season as Diego Simeone's side clinched the Primera Liga title and reached the Champions League final.

Madrid-born Koke only agreed an extension to his contract with Atletico in January, taking him through to 2018, and he has told Marca he is content at the club despite being flattered by Barcelona's interest. He said: "I still haven't had time to read what has come out. I am on holiday and I plan to disconnect.

"Barcelona is one of the best teams in the world and that they are interested in you means that you must be doing something right. That is very nice for a footballer."In any case, I only think about keeping working. I want to stay here and everyone knows it. I see myself at Atletico next season."

Varane: I'm not thinking about Chelsea interest

    415203_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane insists he is fully focused on the World Cup amid interest from Premier League club Chelsea.

The central defender has been tipped to reunite with former Real boss Jose Mourinho at Chelsea after David Luiz agreed to depart Stamford Bridge for Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Varane was an ever-present during Mourinho's final season in charge of the Madrid club, who eventually finished second behind Barcelona in 2012-13.

But the 21-year-old is not thinking about his club future as Didier Deschamps' France prepare to face Switzerland, Ecuador and Honduras in Group E at the World Cup in Brazil.

"Right now, I'm not thinking about (the interest from Chelsea), we have the World Cup ahead of us," Varane told French football programme Telefoot.

"We have a young, motivated team that can do great things and has no limits.

"I love the national team and contribute everything I have to them. My goal is to become a starter.

"(Real Madrid assistant Zinedine Zidane) knows what it means to win the World Cup and it's great talking to him about it."

While he refused to shed much light on his future, Varane was prepared to reflect on Real's triumphant Champions League display.

Real claimed their 10th European crown after overcoming La Liga champions and city rivals Atletico Madrid 4-1 in Lisbon on May 24.

It was Real's first Champions League title since 2001-2002, when they edged Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in Glasgow.

"La Decima is something magnificent," he said. "My team-mates have waited a long time for this.

"This is truly the highlight of my career. It was like I was in a bubble after the game. There was excitement and happiness."

Verratti: I can play with Pirlo

    415638_heroa.jpg

Marco Verratti has spoken of his delight at being included in Cesare Prandelli's 23-man Italy squad for the World Cup and insists he can play alongside Andrea Pirlo.

Prandelli announced his final squad on Sunday night, with the 21-year-old Paris Saint-Germain midfielder making the cut. His inclusion came as a surprise to some, who feel his participation in the tournament will be limited because of his similarity to Andrea Pirlo.

However, the youngster believes he is versatile enough to play alongside the Juventus star and cement a spot in the Italy midfield.

"There isn't a midfield role I prefer, for three years now I have had several tasks and positions," he told reporters.

"I still believe that playing alongside Pirlo is possible, it is impossible for others as they aren't comfortable with a player like Andrea.

"I was called into the 30-man team and the priority for me was to give my best so as to be in the list of 23.

"I gave my best, but of course I feel sorry for those who didn’t make it. Football is all about choices, and you just have to respect them."I didn’t give myself any goals to reach – I just wanted to give my best every day and train as well as I could.

"I’ve always received compliments from the coach, but I always listen to what he tells me. His advice is invaluable."

The former Pescara player also touched on the injury Riccardo Montolivo picked up in Italy's friendly with Ireland, which has ruled him out of the competition."I can’t imagine what Riccardo is going through at the moment," Veratti added.

"His injury has shaken us all up a bit, but now we have to take this opportunity that has been offered to us by the coach."

Immobile can't replace Lewandowski, says Matthaus

    413382_heroa.jpg

Former Germany star Lothar Matthaus does not believe new Borussia Dortmund signing Ciro Immobile is worthy of replacing Robert Lewandowski.

The Serie A top scorer signed a five-year contract with the Bundesliga club on Monday to take up the centre forward slot as Lewandowski leaves to join Bayern Munich this summer.

However, Matthaus thinks the Italy international is a completely different style of forward compared to last season's Bundesliga top goalscorer and is not good enough to replace him.

"He is a player with skill and potential, but I'm sorry, he can't replace Lewandowski," he told Sky Sport Germany.

"He is not a striker like Robert, who runs long distances, Immobile stays in the centre more, but Lewandowski is not a classical penalty area striker."

Immobile, 24, joins Jurgen Klopp's team from Torino after scoring 22 goals in 33 games in Serie A last season.

Ribery makes France World Cup squad

    414680_heroa.jpg

Concerns over Franck Ribery's fitness ahead of the World Cup have been partially allayed by the news that he has been included in Didier Deschamps' final 23-man squad.

The Bayern Munich player has been a doubt because of a persistent back injury, which kept him out of Les Bleus friendly against Paraguay on Sunday, and has plagued his preparation for the summer showpiece.

However, Deschamps has chosen to include him in his final squad for the summer showpiece in Brazil as France prepare to face Switzerland, Ecuador and Honduras in Group E.

While the winger is still not 100 per cent fit, he can be replaced at any time up to a day before their first match against Honduras on June 15.

As well as mainstays such as Ribery, Karim Benzema, Olivier Giroud, Hugo Lloris and Laurent Koscielny, Deschamps has included youngsters Lucas Digne, Raphael Varane, Lucas Digne, Antoine Griezmann and Clement Grenier.

    The full squad:

    Goalkeepers: Mickael Landreau, Hugo Lloris, Stephane Ruffier;

    Defenders: Mathieu Debuchy, Lucas Digne, Patrice Evra, Laurent Koscielny, Eliaquim Mangala, Bacary Sagna, Mamadou Sakho, Raphael Varane;

    Midfielders: Yohan Cabaye, Clement Grenier, Blaise Matuidi, Rio Antonio Mavuba, Paul Pogba, Moussa Sissoko, Mathieu Valbuena;

Forwards: Karim Benzema, Olivier Giroud, Antoine Griezmann, Loic Remy, Franck Ribery

    :(Falcao to miss World Cup

    415929_heroa.jpg

Colombia striker Radamel Falcao has failed to recover from a serious knee injury in time to make Jose Peckerman’s squad for the World Cup.

The Monaco striker sustained ligament damage in his knee while playing in a Coupe de France encounter against Monts d'Or Azergues in January, and though he was able to train with the squad, he will not be risked for the summer’s tournament.

“I don't want to say good evening because it has been such a sad day. I have to announce that Amaranto Perea, Luis Fernando Muriel and Falcao will miss the World Cup. “Perea and Falcao because of their injuries and Muriel as a technical decision,” Pekerman told the press on Sunday.

"The doctors have been very clear: now is not the time for Falcao to return to competition."

Clearly emotional, the striker added: "I do not want to take the place of a team-mate who is at 100 per cent."

The ex-Atletico Madrid attacker had been fighting a race against time from the moment he was struck down, though when he returned to training with his club in the final week of the Ligue 1 campaign there had been tentative optimism he would be fit.

However, that has not been the case, and after failing to feature in any of Colombia’s warm-up friendlies to date, he will not be amongst the playing party to travel to Brazil, where matches against Greece, Ivory Coast and Japan await.

    Colombia squad in full:

Goalkeepers: David Ospina; Faryd Mondragon; Camilo Vargas.

Defenders: Juan Camilo Zuniga; Pablo Armero; Santiago Arias; Eder Alvarez Balanta; Mario Alberto Yepes; Carlos Valdes; Cristian Zapata.

Midfielders: Carlos Sanchez; Abel Aguilar; Alexander Mejia; Freddy Guarin; Juan Guillermo Cuadrado; James Rodriguez; Juan Fernando Quintero; Aldo Leao Ramirez; Victor Ibarbo.

Strikers: Jackson Martinez; Adrian Ramos; Teofilo Gutierrez; Carlos Bacca.

Bosnia announce final World Cup squad

    415894_heroa.jpg

Bosnia-Herzegovina have confirmed their final squad for the 2014 World Cup.

Ervin Zukanovic has been omitted as he was unable to travel with the to their training camp in the United States after being refused a visa.

The Gent defender was quoted as blaming the situation on the Bosnian football federation, who subsequently responded with a statement that confirmed the player would no longer be needed in Brazil.Bosnia coach Safet Susic had originally named 24 players in his provisional squad, so the absence of Zukanovic means the other players who were originally selected have been retained.

Susic's men reached the finals after topping their qualifying group ahead of Greece, who subsequently made it to Brazil via the play-offs.Bosnia face Mexico in their final warm-up match on Wednesday, before taking on Argentina, Nigeria and Iran in Group F at the World Cup.

Brazil 4-0 Panama: World Cup hosts stroll to a routine win

    416419hp2.jpg

Brazil showed no signs of pre-World Cup nerves as they effortlessly swept Panama aside in a 4-0 friendly victory on Tuesday.

With Brazil set to host the marquee tournament, the weight of expectation to deliver a sixth World Cup triumph has arguably never been higher. However, led by a fine display from forward Neymar, Luiz Felipe Scolari's men earned a comfortable win in their first warm-up fixture in Goiana.

After a somewhat tepid opening, Neymar lit up the game with a superb free-kick that left Panama goalkeeper Oscar McFarlane with no chance, before Daniel Alves doubled the lead with a low drive shortly before the break.

Neymar then turned provider for the third with an excellent assist for Hulk, who produced an expert finish, with substitute Willian rounding off the scoring late on.
Brazil had further chances for a fifth, but had to settle for the four-goal triumph and will now prepare for Friday's encounter with Serbia, their last before their tournament begins against Croatia next week. After a frustrating opening, a moment of quality from Neymar sparked the game into life in the 27th minute.

Luis Tejada was booked for crudely fouling the Barcelona man, but he responded by picking himself up and expertly bending a 20-yard free-kick in the top left-hand corner.Buoyed by the goal Brazil went in search of an immediate second and Neymar showed a neat bit of skill on the left before clipping a ball into the area that Fred failed to make clean contact with.

Brazil were now in complete control, and they deservedly had a second five minutes before the break when Dani Alves hit an angled drive from the right-edge of the box that found the far corner.

It took less than a minute of the second half for Brazil to add a third, Neymar showed great vision to pick out Hulk's run on the left with a sublime backheel, and the Zenit forward fired past McFarlane with the outside of his left foot.

Neymar continued to torment, first providing a pin-point cross for Fred who made a hash of the close-range header, before seeing a left-foot shot well saved.Panama had created little at the other end but Roberto Nurse forced Julio Cesar into action just before the hour mark, the goalkeeper springing to his left to prevent his looping header.

Scolari made a string of substitutions as the second half wore on and one of the new faces, Willian, grabbed the fourth after Maxwell showed desire and technique on the left. The game ended in a state of confusion as referee Raul Orozco brandished a red card in Panama defender Gabriel Gomez's direction.

Gomez had handled the ball to deny Maicon a clear opportunity at goal, but the referee withdrew his decision, allowing the player to stay on and play to continue.

Switzerland 2-0 Peru: Lichtsteiner and Shaqiri on target as hosts leave it late

    287210_heroa.jpg

Switzerland’s World Cup preparations failed to find second gear in a less-than-convincing 2-0 win over Peru on Tuesday.

The South Americans have failed to win any of their previous seven fixtures, a 12-month barren run, but Ottmar Hitzfeld’s men struggled to find a way through for large parts of the contest in Lucerne.

And it was Peru who arguably had the best chance to break the deadlock in the first half, when Paolo Hurtado saw his effort pushed wide by goalkeeper Diego Benaglio before the break.

However, the Swiss side's class eventually told as Stephan Lichtsteiner headed home from a Ricardo Rodriguez cross and Xherdan Shaqiri finished from a tight angle to secure a barely deserved scoreline. This performance and a similarly lacklustre 1-0 win over Jamaica on Friday will be of some concern for Hitzfeld, whose side kick off their World Campaign against Ecuador on June 15.

The German coach named Josip Drmic in place of the misfiring Haris Seferovic, but the opening stages proved uneventful at both ends, with neither side able to put the goalkeepers under pressure.

Left-back Rodriguez – tipped by many to shine in Brazil - was first to threaten, when his 23rd-minute free-kick forced Peru keeper George Forsyth to come off his line and punch to safety. And the Wolfsburg man tried to force the issue once again moments later, but Forsyth gratefully clung on to his dangerous low cross this time around.

The ball sat up nicely for Granit Xhaka in the penalty area shortly before the half-hour mark, only for 21-year-old to slice his effort high and wide under pressure from Hurtado.

The sometimes-reckless challenges of Luis Ramirez were drawing the ire of the hosts, who were understandably keen to come out of the fixture with a clean bill of health.Hurtado could have had Peru ahead before half-time, but Benaglio got down well to touch the 12-yard curler around his left-hand post.

Switzerland came out for the second period looking for a much-improved display, but it failed to materialise for much of the half as Peru continued to frustrate their hosts.

However, Lichtsteiner’s 78th-minute headed effort finally got the Swiss off the mark, before Shaqiri – off the bench in place of Xhaka - slotted home through the legs of Benaglio to put some gloss on an otherwise disappointing performance.
