Suarez may miss England match - Tabarez

    422635_heroa.jpg

Uruguay boss Oscar Tabarez says Luis Suarez is a major doubt to be fit for their crucial World Cup clash with England on Thursday.

The Celeste were stunned by Costa Rica on Saturday, falling to a 3-1 defeat after Edinson Cavani had given them the lead in the first half.

Despite Suarez warming up on the sidelines in the second half, he was not sent on to help save the day as Uruguay's defence crumbled and the goals started piling in for the Concacaf nation.

Tabarez claims the Liverpool striker demanded to be part of the squad, despite not being fit to play, and the coach has doubts he will fully recover to feature against the Three Lions from the start.

"Luis Suarez is no longer injured, because he wouldn’t have been a substitute if he was," he said. "He has gone through the phases that we have foreseen in his recovery and we will have to see if he can find fitness.

"As we said from the beginning, if he meets the challenges, we will see how he can get into the team - and at which point. For us, he is a key player. He has great potential and has a lot to contribute to the team.

"We need him to reach a point where he can play in a match. It was he who demanded to be on the bench, not watching from the stands. It would have been very difficult for him to play though.

"He was a serious doubt, you need to have a certain fitness level - you need to be able to reach the highest standard. There were certain concerns over his fitness and it was very improbable that he would play. We will see about England."

Costa Rica's win over the 2010 World Cup semi-finalists was one of the biggest shocks of the Brazil competition and Tabarez was under no illusions how important beating England is if they want to reach the knockout stage.

"Costa Rica took advantage of the opportunities they had in the second half," he said. "It was a very tough blow.

"But we did not underestimate Costa Rica. We conceded goals that we do not usually concede, but we have to accept the result. We will have to recover in the next game."

Messi won't be better than Maradona until World Cup win - Cannavaro

    422163_heroa.jpg

Italy legend Fabio Cannavaro does not think Lionel Messi can be considered better than Diego Maradona until he has won a World Cup.

The Barcelona star failed to take the tournament by storm four years ago as the Maradona-coached Albiceleste reached the quarter-finals.

Cannavaro, who lifted the World Cup as Azzurri skipper in 2006, acknowledged that Messi is a brilliant player but considers the 1986 World Cup winner to have the edge - at least until the 26-year-old lifts the greatest trophy in international football.

"Messi? As I said, when you win the Champions League or the Ballon d'Or, you become a great player," he told reporters.

"But when you win a World Cup, a player becomes a legend. To be better than Maradona, Messi has to win the World Cup here in Brazil."

The former centre-back also mused over Brazilian talent, insisting that Neymar needs to show more graft in games and claiming that the defensive partnership of Thiago Silva and David Luiz has no equal in world football.

"Neymar still needs to work a bit harder," he told reporters. "He's an excellent player, playing football that entertains people.

"The world is changing and football is too. The best defenders are currently from Brazil and the best strikers from Italy, Germany and other countries.

"Thiago Silva and David Luiz are very strong, they form a good team, perhaps one of the best in the world."

Vidal: Chile will match 'angry' Spain

    423081_heroa.jpg

Arturo Vidal thinks that Spain will be fuming after being trounced 5-1 by Netherlands but hopes Chile can match them on Wednesday.

The world and European champions were favourites to repeat the 2010 final by beating the Dutch on Friday, but doubles from Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben and a Stefan de Vrij goal saw Louis van Gaal's men spring a shock with a 5-1 victory.

Afterwards, Chile opened their tournament with a 3-1 win over Australia. Alexis Sanchez and Jorge Valdivia scored in the early stages of the game and, although Tim Cahill pulled a goal back for the Socceroos, Jean Beausejour capped the win with a late effort.

And the Juventus midfielder is aware that Vicente del Bosque's men will be looking to turn around their fortunes with a vengeance in the next World Cup match.

"We know that they will play with great anger, we hope to rise to the occasion," he told

"Nobody could expect a defeat like that."

Vidal, who recovered from surgery in May to be fit to start in Chile's opener and then threw a water bottle when he was substituted after 60 minutes, also admitted that his depleted fitness after playing for the first time in a month was incredibly frustrating.

"I have gone a while without playing," he said. "You always want to get in the best shape, but I have not had the right conditions.

"The important thing is that I played."

Chile know that a win over Spain in their second match of the group stage will see them qualify for the last 16 should Australia fail to beat Netherlands.

Oscar: Brazil must fix problems to win World Cup

    423474_heroa.jpg

Oscar believes that Brazil must improve if they are to fulfil the hopes of a nation and win the World Cup on home soil.

The Chelsea playmaker's late goal added to a Neymar double as the hosts recovered from falling 1-0 behind to triumph 3-1 against Croatia in their opening Group A game on Thursday.

But the victory was not without incident: Brazil were awarded a controversial penalty when Fred went down easily under a challenge from Dejan Lovren, with the Balkan side battling hard for a point or three beforehand.

That moment proved crucial as Neymar put his side ahead for the first time in the game and Oscar, who was delighted to come away with the points, is aware that there is room for improvement versus Mexico on Tuesday.

"The first game is always difficult, especially after conceding an early goal," he told reporters on Saturday. "But it was very good. Although we conceded the early goal, we played well and found a response."The next game will be hard again. Every game for us is final. We have to fix things and we have to think about the next game."

Oscar is a key part of the Selecao set-up but, although he acknowledges that Luiz Felipe Scolari has faith in him, the Chelsea playmaker is well aware of quality replacements waiting in the wings should he underperform.

"Felipao has trusted me for a long time," he added. "It's not a new thing. This trust was proved on the pitch. He told the media this and he has always believed in me.

"Not only has Willian been training well, but Ramires has as well. Hernanes too. There are no regular starters or reserves on the national team."If I play badly, someone comes in, scores a goal and stays. I have to prove every match by putting in another good performance."

Brazil are back in action on Tuesday against Mexico before facing Cameroon in the final group game on June 23, six days later.

    Del Bosque promises Spain changes

    423001_heroa.jpg

Spain boss Vicente del Bosque has promised to make changes to his starting line-up for their second group game against Chile after they were thrashed 5-1 by Netherlands on Friday.

Two strikes apiece from Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie and a close-range goal from Stefan de Vrij secured a 5-1 win to Louis van Gaal's men, despite Xabi Alonso putting the reigning champions ahead from the spot in the first half.

Spain now cannot afford to lose again in the group, with Chile next up on Wednesday, and Del Bosque is desperate for his players to bounce back and is not afraid to freshen the XI up after the humiliation against the Dutch.

"It was a hard defeat," he told reporters on Saturday, "but step by step we are accepting that it isn't a crucial loss.

"We hope to move on for the next match with all respect to Chile, who also want to qualify for the next stage.

"Of course there will be some changes, but I don't want to make any rash decisions, I have until Wednesday to decide who will be dropped. There's no need to single anybody out, we have 23 players available and we'll find the best possible solution."

Diego Costa's performance was not hugely impressive, despite him winning the penalty which Alonso scored, and Del Bosque doubts the boos from the Brazil fans, the country he was born in, are harming his form, but stressed the pressure from fans back home could become poisonous.

"I don't think Diego Costa was affected by the atmosphere in the stands," he added. "Spain are with him and he's motivated for being here.

"This team has a lot of pressure that could become suicidal to our chances, we have to perform to stop that pressure becoming overwhelming. We deserve the criticism, but we also deserve respect."

Nobody expects the Spanish abolition |:(Casillas looks to the skies as Netherlands run rampant

There has been a lot of criticism aimed at goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who made a key mistake late on which gifted Van Persie his second goal, following Friday's loss.

Del Bosque admitted that the Real Madrid man is blaming himself heavily for the defeat, but backed him to remain as the nation's skipper.

"Iker showed proof of his captaincy with the national team yesterday," he said. "When I arrived in the dressing room he was talking to all the team - who were in a solemn silence - and he blames himself but at the same time he knows that all of us are guilty.

"Iker knows there's a lot of people in Spain behind us, he acted as a captain, he gave a positive and useful speech."

Deschamps hopes to see the best of Benzema

    419635_heroa.jpg

France boss Didier Deschamps is hoping Karim Benzema can replicate his Real Madrid form when Les Bleus open their World Cup campaign against Honduras on Sunday.Benzema has often struggled on the international stage but shone brightly in France’s final warm-up fixture, an 8-0 thrashing of Jamaica, playing on the left-side of a front three which also included Olivier Giroud and Mathieu Valbuena.

And having helped Madrid land the Champions League crown at the end of last season with five goals and five assists in the competition, Deschamps is eager for the former Lyon man to finally show his best form for his country."He has always played at a high level, although he has had some downs," he said at Saturday’s press conference."But we have all seen what he has done for Real Madrid, how relaxed and concentrated he is. And that’s good."

With Antoine Griezmann also coming into contention for a starting berth, Deschamps has plenty to ponder, but the World Cup winner is satisfied that whatever XI he picks will go into the game on the back of a near-perfect build-up.
"We have prepared the best way possible. With the friendlies we played, the training sessions, everything for this match. But it’s what we’ll do tomorrow that matters," Deschamps added.

"We won’t change anything now, or get more anxious just because the match is just around the corner."

Deschamps is not expecting an easy game against a physical Honduras side.
"There is a more aggressive side to their play, but I won’t limit my players because of that."Honduras is a team that has been playing like this for two years. We all know about their 4-4-2 formation, and how dangerous their strikers can be.

"I saw them against England [in a warm-up game], they are focused and prepared.
"They are a quality side from the Americas, there is more to them than just the aggression."

Switzerland 2-1 Ecuador: Seferovic's injury-time winner gives La Nati the win

    423993_heroa.jpg

A pair of inspired substitutions from Ottmar Hitzfeld earned Switzerland a 2-1 comeback World Cup win over Ecuador in Group E.

The in-form Enner Valencia scored his fifth goal in the past five international appearances to give the South Americans the lead after 22 minutes but Admir Mehmedi levelled three minutes after coming on as a half-time substitute.

Both those goals came about as a result of poor set-peice marking, but Switzerland took the points in dramatic fashion courtesy of a clinical counter-attack deep into injury time.

Mehmedi’s fellow replacement Haris Seferovic, who last netted for his club, Real Sociedad, in November, was on hand to convert Ricardo Rodriguez's low cross to spark wild celebrations from the Swiss.

Ecuador made a high-tempo start to the match, launching attack after attack during the opening minutes but the Switzerland defence stood firm.

Their lone striker, Josip Drmic, had a sight of goal in the 12th minute, only for Jorge Guagua to make a timely challenge as the Europeans found their feet.

Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri tried their luck from outside the box - the latter's strike grasped at the second attempt by goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez, who then spilt a 19th-minute shot from full-back Rodriguez behind.

And so it was slightly against the run of play when Valencia headed home Walter Ayovi's pinpoint delivery as Switzerland's customary set-piece solidity deserted them.

Valencia has played a more forward role in the Ecuador team since the death of Christian Benitez last July and, as part of their celebrations, the Ecuador players pointed to the sky in tribute to their late team-mate.

Dominguez showed more assured handling when Valon Behrami headed Shaqiri's corner goalwards and the Ecuador goalkeeper then got a vital touch to send Gokhan Inler's low 36th-minute drive around the post.

Ecuador looked to extend their lead two minutes before the break but Johan Djourou made a last-ditch block to deny Jefferson Montero after Felipe Caicedo had played the winger in.

Mehmedi was introduced at the resumption and Hitzfeld's decision to bolster his attack paid almost instant dividends. Just as Switzerland's marking was found wanting for the game's opening goal, Ecuador allowed the Freiburg forward far too much room to head Rodriguez's corner into the net.

Both teams refused to take a backwards step following the equaliser, Valencia remaining heavily involved as he weaved inside to ripple to top of the netting with an hour played.

Ecuador's pace on the counter-attack became an increasing threat and Diego Benaglio made a fine save after his defenders backed off the rampaging Montero, while Drmic scrambled the ball home from an offside position at the other end with 20 minutes to go.

Shaqiri drilled into the side netting with team-mates well placed inside him, while Valencia almost capitalised on a rush of blood from Benaglio, but the goalkeeper was let off the hook.

Ecuador sub Michael Arroyo erred in delaying his shot in stoppage time, allowing Switzerland to break and after Behrami had made a superb tackle to set them away, Seferovic made no such mistake when he fired home the winner with virtually the last kick.

Switzerland must tackle France in Salvador on Friday, while Honduras are next up for Ecuador later on the same day in Curitiba.

Chile clash is 'life or death' for Spain - Paredes

    422943_heroa.jpg

Chile striker Esteban Paredes says his side's group game against Spain on Wednesday is a matter of life or death for La Roja.

Spain suffered a humiliaiting 5-1 defeat to Netherlands in their opener in Salvador on Friday, while Chile beat Australia in the other Group B encounter later that evening.

That means Vicente del Bosque's side are likely to need back-to-back wins over both Chile and Australia in order to advance to the second round - starting against the South Americans on Wednesday.

"It's a game of life or death for them," said Colo Colo striker Paredes at a press conference in Belo Horizonte on Sunday. "Spain will set out to control the game, we won't have to hand them the ball. We will try to cause problems in their area and we aren't thinking of playing for a draw, nor about the pressure they are under.

"We will simply concentrate on closing the spaces."

Team-mate Felipe Gutierrez added: "We're preparing the game as if it were a final. We really want to win it. They have decisive players all over the pitch, so we'll go out to press them and make life difficult."

The Twente midfielder also revealed his side will try to make up for a lack of height in defence with aggression against Spain.

"We know we have problems in the air and we suffered in that respect [against Australia]," he said. "We were aware of that before the World Cup, but we try to make up for it by playing more aggressively."

I'm ready to take on Germany, insists Ronaldo

    423552_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo insists he is "100 per cent" fit and ready to lead Portugal in their Group G crunch clash against Germany at Arena Fonte Nova on Monday.

Ronaldo's fitness has overshadowed the build-up to the match after he was seen limping out of a Portugal training session with an ice pack on his left knee last week.

But the Real Madrid superstar is adamant he is in good enough condition to make a decisive impact for his country against Joachim Low's heavily-fancied Germany team.

"The [fitness] problems are all in the past," he told reporters at a pre-match press conference in Salvador.

"Since the start of my career there's not been one single day in which I've played without pain. It's just the burden of my work.

"I'm ready, I'm feeling well ... I don't have anything to prove. One player is not a team, I can't carry the whole team on my back."
