'The pain will be with us for life' - Mascherano

    435061_heroa.jpg

Javier Mascherano has described the "immense" pain he and his Argentina team-mates are suffering following their World Cup final defeat to Germany, insisting it will stay with them forever.Mario Gotze's extra-time volley settled the contest in the Germans' favour at the Maracana, leaving Argentina without a World Cup success since Diego Maradona inspired them to glory 28 years ago in Mexico.

And Mascherano says the Albiceleste players gave everything they had in the final aginst Joachim Low's side and apologised to the people of the South American country.

"The pain is immense," Mascherano said on the Argentine FA's Twitter feed. "We gave what we could and we are sorry for ourselves and the people.
    "The sadness is for life."

    Germany never panicked, insists Lahm

    435076_heroa.jpg

Philipp Lahm says Germany never panicked during Sunday's 1-0 World Cup final win over Argentina, adding that they always remained confident they would take the trophy home.

The South American side created a number of gilt-edged chances, but Gonzalo Higuain, Lionel Messi and Rodrigo Palacio all failed to break the deadlock, thus allowing Mario Gotze to fire Germany to glory after 113 minutes of play.

And Lahm says his team held their nerve and were always sure they would see it through before the game had to be decided by penalties.

"The team stayed calm and patient, we knew that we had something left at the end," Lahm told reporters.

"It's unbelievable what we have achieved. We improved throughout the tournament and didn't get down when things didn't always go our way.

"We just stuck to our path and at the end we're standing here as world champions. It's an unbelievable feeling."

Lahm then went on to discuss Germany's lack of a true superstar and insisted that it's all about the team rather than about individual players.

"It doesn’t matter if you have the best individual players, as you need to have the best team unit."

Everton lead race to sign Besic

    434196_heroa.jpg

Everton have moved into pole position in the race to land in-demand Bosnian Muhamed Besic, Goal understands.

The 21-year-old, who can play in midfield and defence, impressed at the World Cup, despite Bosnia-Herzegovina's elimination from the tournament at the group stage.

The Ferencvaros midfielder has been monitored by several European clubs, with Sevilla weighing up a move as they target a replacement for Ivan Rakitic, who joined Barcelona earlier this summer.

Swansea City are also interested in Besic, but sources close to the deal have told Goal that Everton are now leading the chase.

It is understood Everton are ready to pay €5 million to land Besic, who left Bundesliga side Hamburg for Ferencvaros in 2012.

Besic started every game as Bosnia-Herzegovina finished third in Group F at the World Cup, picking up three points in their final game against Iran having already been eliminated from the tournament following defeats to Argentina and Nigeria.

Luck was on Germany's side, admits Hummels

    434972_heroa.jpg

Germany defender Mats Hummels has admitted that Joachim Low's men enjoyed some fortunate moments in Sunday's World Cup final against Argentina.

The South Americans got a number of chances to grab the lead, but Gonzalo Higuain, Lionel Messi and Rodrigo Palacio all failed to beat Manuel Neuer in one-on-one situations before Mario Gotze eventually fired Germany to glory with his goal in the 113th minute.

Hummels was quick to praise the team's work ethic following Germany's fourth world title but conceded the clash at the Maracana could have gone either way.

"You can only win the World Cup when you act as a team," Hummels told reporters.

"We have tried to make that very clear right from the start and have succeeded in doing so, even if we had our fair share of luck in the final.

"We were already getting ourselves ready for spot-kicks.

"I am still completely caught up in a different world. I'm physically too exhausted to be able to celebrate all euphoric. But it will all sink in in the days to come."

Germany have won four out of the eight World Cup finals they have played following their victory over Argentina.

Manchester United Confirm 10-Year Adidas Deal

    Wayne-Rooney_3110220.jpg

Manchester United have agreed a deal with adidas worth a minimum of £750million over 10 years from the 2015-16 season. The news will be a welcome boost for the Old Trafford club whose performances on the pitch last season were hugely disappointing but they can now look forward to fresh investment with the new contract doubling the income from previous kit suppliers Nike.

A club statement on Monday read: "Manchester United plc has reached a 10-year agreement with adidas for a global technical sponsorship and dual branded licensing deal for a minimum guarantee of £750m, subject to certain adjustments, beginning with the 2015/2016 campaign."

Sportswear giants Nike announced on July 9 they had decided not to continue their relationship with United, claiming the Premier League side were demanding too much money.Last week's statement from Nike, who are set to begin their final season of sponsorship with United, read: "Manchester United is a great club with passionate fans. We are proud to have partnered with them for the last 12 years and will continue to sponsor the club until the end of the 2014/15 season.

"Any partnership with a club or federation has to be mutually beneficial and the terms that were on offer for a renewed contract did not represent good value for Nike's shareholders. We look forward to a successful final season with the club."Nike's original deal was worth £303m, with extra income from a profit share agreement from merchandise sold worldwide.

On July 7, United unveiled their new home kit for the 2014-15 season - which will be the last designed by Nike and the first to bear the logo of new sponsor Chevrolet.United announced they would be entering a seven-year agreement - worth a reported £53million per season - with the US car giant from this summer back in 2012.

Incoming manager Louis van Gaal, who helped steer the Netherlands to third place in the World Cup at the weekend, will head to the United States to pick up the reins for the first time as United begin their overseas tour on Friday July 18.

    435101_heroa.jpg

Emmanuel Adebayor has been released from hospital after contracting malaria, Tottenham have confirmed.

The Togo international was hospitalised after being diagnosed with a mild case of the virus and will now miss the club's pre-season tour of North America.

Adebayor will remain in England while his team-mates prepare for the 2014-15 season.

A statement from the club read: "We're pleased to report that Emmanuel Adebayor has been released from hospital after being admitted on Saturday with a mild bout of malaria.

"The striker will now rest for a minimum of seven days before making a return to training and will continue to be assessed."

Tottenham have three friendlies against MLS sides in the space of seven days, beginning with a clash against Seattle Sounders on Saturday.

Argentina proved doubters wrong - Messi

    435094_heroa.jpg

Lionel Messi says Argentina have proved the doubters wrong despite losing the World Cup final 1-0 to Germany on Sunday.

Mario Gotze's extra-time strike was the difference between the sides after Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and Rodrigo Palacio had missed golden opportunities in each half of the encounter.

The 27-year-old was surprisingly awarded the Golden Ball for the best player of the tournament after the game, with the likes of Diego Maradona and Alessandro Nesta questioning that decision on Monday.

But Messi is insistent that Argentina displayed their quality in Brazil and already has his eyes set on further success with the national side in the future.

"We gave everything we had and we couldn't achieve our goal. But we gave joy to our country by reaching the final," the Albiceleste captain said.

"When we travelled to Brazil, there were a lot of doubts around us from the people and the media, but it made us stronger than ever. We want to keep working to give more joy to the country."

Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella, who revealed during the tournament he would step down at the end of the competition, echoed the sentiments of his star player by expressing his pride at leading his country to the final.

"I'm part of the 40 millons Argentines, I'm not above them," he added. "I'm really proud of this group, they've put their body and soul into every match, every action.

"That's what made people so enthusiastic: they realised that everybody on the team was going to do that."

Hughes hopeful of signing Assaidi from Liverpool

    355332_heroa.jpg

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes is still hopeful of securing the services of Liverpool winger Oussama Assaidi on a permanent basis.

The Moroccan spent last season on loan at the Britannia Stadium and enjoyed a relatively impressive campaign, the highlight of which came when he scored a spectcular goal to give his side a 3-2 win over Chelsea in December.

Hughes is keen to add another winger to his ranks but reports suggest that a move for Assaidi has stalled due to issues over fitness and the club's finances.

"We are where we are on that one," the Potters boss told The Sentinel. "Ideally, if we can do something then, yes, we will.

"He's someone we know and someone we know can have an impact so, yes, we would like to see if something can be done with Ossie but obviously he isn't our player and that means the ball is in Liverpool's court."

Hughes is pleased with Stoke's business so far this summer, which has seen them bring in Mame Biram Diouf, Phil Bardsley, Steve Sidwell and Dionatan Teixeira, though the former Manchester City and Fulham boss is eager to make further additions before the start of the new season.

"People are coming back from the World Cup so things can move on quite quickly," he added.

"We are still keen to add to the squad if the right quality at the right price is available but we are in a good place because of the early work already done."

Janmaat to have Newcastle medical on Tuesday

    363942_heroa.jpg

Netherlands defender Daryl Janmaat will fly into Tyneside on Tuesday to undergo a medical with Newcastle United.

The 24-year-old will replace Mathieu Debuchy at right-back for the Magpies, meaning the Frenchman can complete his move to Arsenal.

Janmaat, who is set to sign a six-year deal at St James' Park, will become the club's fifth signing of the summer - although he is unlikely to make their pre-season trip to New Zealand given he has only just returned to Europe following his participation in the World Cup finals.

After initially seeing their first bid rejected last week, Newcastle agreed a deal worth around €8 million with Feyenoord at the second time of asking.

Janmaat should become the club's second signing in 48 hours after Remy Cabella joined from Montpellier for around €15m on Sunday.

As Goal revealed earlier that day, Newcastle want to make it a triple swoop by tying up a deal for Monaco's Emmanuel Riviere.

Like Cabella, Ayoze Perez, Jack Colback and Siem de Jong have also signed on at St James' Park this summer.

    Bayern rule out Shaqiri exit

    428953_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich have ruled out the sale of Swiss attacker Xherdan Shaqiri after sporting director Matthias Sammer labelled him "an important player for the future".

Premier League club Liverpool were willing to pay €19 million for the 22-year-old and held tentative talks with the German champions in June.

But die Roten are keen to keep Shaqiri at the Allianz Arena – especially with Toni Kroos's future in doubt – and Sammer says the former Basel star will not be allowed to leave the club.

"Xherdan is an important player for the future," the Bayern chief told Kicker. "There are no thoughts at all about selling him."

Shaqiri shone at the World Cup for a Swiss side who were knocked out in the last 16, scoring a superb hat-trick in their 3-0 win over Honduras.

The playmaker had been wanted as part of a new-look Anfield attack in the wake of Luis Suarez's move to Barcelona and had even intimated that he would be open to moving to the Premier League.

But with Bayern keen to retain a player who scored six goals in 17 Bundesliga appearances last season, Liverpool will be forced to look elsewhere.

The Reds are close to capturing Benfica winger Lazar Markovic in a €25m deal and the Serbian could be quickly followed by Belgian striker Divock Origi and Southampton defender Dejan Lovren.
