:shocked:Blow for Barcelona as Vermaelen is sidelined with hamstring injury

    443485_heroa.jpg

Barcelona have announced that Thomas Vermaelen will be out of action for an indefinite period of time due to a hamstring injury.

The Belgium international passed a medical at the weekend before completing his €19 million transfer from Arsenal, but the Catalans have now revealed that the 28-year-old will not be ready to make his debut for now following his World Cup exploits.

Vermaelen made two appearances for Marc Wilmots' men at this summer's tournament in Brazil, where Belgium made it to the quarter-finals.

"The first-team player Thomas Vermaelen has a hamstring injury in his right leg that he sustained in June during the World Cup," a statement on the club's official website reads.

"The player will undergo physiotherapy. His return to regular training action depends on the evolution of the injury."

Vermaelen signed a contract with Barcelona until the summer of 2019 on Sunday.

The Camp Nou side previously secured the services of Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Claudio Bravo, Jeremy Mathieu, Alen Halilovic, Ivan Rakitic and Luis Suarez.

Official: Manchester City sign Mangala from Porto

    428679_heroa.jpg

Manchester City have announced the signing of defender Eliaquim Mangala from Porto.

The France centre-back was in Manchester in July to complete a medical after the two clubs agreed a €40 million deal.

City had tried to sign Mangala during the January transfer window but the Portuguese club held firm, despite the investment trust that owns part of his economic rights willing to do a deal.

The Premier League champions also unsuccessfully attempted to sign Mangala's team-mate, Brazilian midfielder Fernando, in the winter window, but announced his signing during the World Cup.

“City is a top club in Europe," Mangala told the club's official website. "For me, it was an important step to leave Porto and join Manchester City in order to continue my progress.

"I want to win titles and I believe I can do this. I am ambitious and this is why I am here.

“I’m very happy to come to England because for me, the Premier League is the best league in the world. It is a very intense and very aggressive competition. There are plenty of goals, so it is also really nice to watch and I can’t wait to get started!

“The fact that Fernando is here is better because I played with him at Porto but there is also other players that I know like [Bacaray] Sagna, [Gael] Clichy and [Samir] Nasri."

City had prioritised the capture of an elite central defender to partner Vincent Kompany, and the 23-year-old Frenchman becomes the club's sixth summer signing after Sagna, Fernando, Willy Caballero, Frank Lampard and Bruno Zuculini.

Lopez thanks Madrid ahead of AC Milan move

    440634_heroa.jpg

Diego Lopez has thanked Real Madrid and described his time at the club as a "happy one" as he prepares to sign for AC Milan.

The Spaniard began his career at the club before returning from Sevilla in January 2013, as Jose Mourinho installed him as his first choice goalkeeper ahead of club captain Iker Casillas.

He then shared duties with his compatriot last term, only to see Costa Rica star Keylor Navas join Madrid from Levante, a move which has forced him out of the club.

Goal reported last week how the 32-year-old got into a row with officials after learning of their desire to sell him, though he insists he bears no resentment towards his soon to be former employers.

He told reporters on Monday:"It was a very happy time in my life and I can only thank Madrid. I am very pleased to be joining a club like Milan.

"I hope to close my transfer tomorrow and there is no problem in the medical examination."

Lopez is expected to arrive in Milan on Monday evening before undergoing a medical on Tuesday.

    Lulic on Southampton radar

    443938_heroa.jpg

Southampton are considering a move for Lazio's Senad Lulic after being rebuffed in their attempts to land Marcos Rojo.

Saints boss Ronald Koeman remains keen to bolster his squad, particularly the back-line, after losing Dejan Lovren, Calum Chambers and Luke Shaw this summer, with Sporting defender Rojo having been top of his wishlist.

The Argentina international, who starred at the World Cup, was made a priority signing by the south coast outfit, despite the player being unsure on a move, and Southampton executive director Les Reed was in Portugal last week to hold talks with Sporting.

But the Portuguese giants are holding out for €38 million for Rojo – far in excess of the €21m the Saints are prepared to pay – and Southampton are now ready to move onto other targets.

Bosnia international Lulic has now emerged as an alternative to Rojo, with Koeman looking to add further cover and competition for left-backs Ryan Bertrand and Matt Targett.

The Lazio man, who can play at left-back and on the flanks, has attracted interest from the likes of Juventus and AC Milan this summer, though neither club was able to reach an agreement and the 28-year-old has instead taken a full part in the Rome club’s pre-season, featuring in their recent friendly against Hamburg.

Unlike Rojo, a move to the Premier League and Southampton would appeal to Lulic, who has been a regular for Lazio since joining from Young Boys in 2011.

Southampton have been busy this summer after losing a host of first-team players, signing Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic, Saphir Taider, Fraser Forster and Bertrand.

Suarez 'dying' to play again - Iniesta

    442893_heroa.jpg

Andres Iniesta has revealed Luis Suarez's frustration at being unable to make his Barcelona debut and says he is "dying" to start his career with the club.

Suarez was handed a four-month suspension for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini while on international duty for Uruguay at this summer's World Cup.

However, that didn't stop Barcelona from shelling out €88 million to buy the striker from Liverpool, despite the fact he will be unable to play again until October.

"I have spoken to him, he is dying to begin," Iniesta said on Monday.

Suarez was in Lausanne, Switzerland on Friday, where he gave a statement to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in a bid to have his punishment halved, which would see him return at the end of August.

Iniesta also reserved special praise for another new recruit, Ivan Rakitic, who is set to play alongside the Spain international at the heart of Barca's new-look midfield after arriving from Sevilla.

"His quality has not surprised me. We all know how good he is and we are delighted to have him here. He is physically very strong and can dominate in both halves of the pitch."

    Rodgers predicts greatness for Coutinho

    443602_heroa.jpg

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers believes that the "magical" Philippe Coutinho can take the Champions League by storm.

The Brazilian playmaker has regularly shown glimpses of his ability since arriving at Anfield from Inter in January 2013.

He made 33 Premier League appearances as Liverpool went agonisingly close to winning the title last term and was one of their standout players throughout pre-season after missing out on a place in his country's World Cup squad.

The Reds will return to the Champions League in 2014-15 following a five-year absence and, after watching a virtuoso Coutinho display in his side's 4-0 demolition of Borussia Dortmund on Sunday, Rodgers tipped the 22-year-old to shine on European club football's biggest stage.

"He's so gifted - his ability is magical [and] the weight of his pass is phenomenal," Rodgers purred to the press.

"He's come into the country and lit it up with his quality. [The important thing for his development] is sustaining that level of performance.

"He's got the opportunity to show he's a top-level player in the Champions League and he'll do that.

"Over the next four or five years, he'll be a big talent in world football for Brazil and Liverpool. We're lucky to have him."

Coutinho - whom the manager hopes to tie down to a new contract - was among the scorers as Liverpool routed Dortmund at Anfield and Rodgers was thrilled with his team's performance.

"[I'm] delighted with the result - they [Dortmund] have been one of Europe's best teams for the last three or four years," he added. "We were excellent and this brings to an end what has been a very good pre-season."

Musacchio close to Tottenham move after Villarreal sign Victor Ruiz

    440272_heroa.jpg

Villarreal centre-back Mateo Musacchio is a step closer to joining Tottenham after the Spanish side signed Victor Ruiz on loan from Valencia on Monday.

Villarreal coach Marcelino admitted last week that Musacchio was set to sign for Spurs and left the Argentine defender out of his side's travelling party for the 3-0 friendly win over Swansea on Saturday as negotiations between the two clubs continued.

The Yellow Submarine were unwilling to part company with the 23-year-old until a replacement had been identified, but Goal understands the transfer moved closer to its completion after Ruiz was unveiled on Monday in a loan deal from regional rivals Valencia with a view to a permanent move next summer.

Musacchio has a release clause set at €50 million, but Villarreal are expected to settle for around €20m for the highly-rated Argentine defender, who has also interested Real Madrid and Barcelona in the past.

However, the Liga side only own 35 per cent of Musacchio's playing rights, with 35% belonging to his former club River Plate and the remaining 30% to the defender's representatives.

Villarreal want at least €15m of the total fee from Tottenham themselves for their most marketable player and hope the Premier League club and the player's agent, Marcelo Lombilla, can come to an agreement with River Plate over the remainder of the funds.

Musacchio is keen on a move to White Hart Lane and a link-up with compatriot Mauricio Pochettino, himself a fine centre-back in his playing days, but his agent will now need to renounce his 30 per cent stake for the deal to go through.

Villarreal's public stance, meanwhile, is that Musacchio remains a key part of the club's plans and president Fernando Roig has told local media the defender will be offered a new contract in the coming days.

Tavecchio confirmed as new FIGC president

    440242_heroa.jpg

Carlo Tavecchio has been named as the new president of the Italian football association (FIGC), the body announced on Monday.

The 71-year-old was vice-president of the federation from 2009, but confirmed his candidacy for the top job following Giancarlo Abete's decision to resign after Italy's early exit from the World Cup in Brazil in June.

And despite a controversial campaign, in which he caused a racism stir and was accused of sexism in a previous interview in 2009, Tavecchio fought off the challenge of former AC Milan star Demetrio Albertini to be named as the FIGC's new president.

It took three rounds of voting for Tavecchio to overcome Albertini, having collected only 60.20 per cent of the 516 available votes originally. A minimum of 75% is needed for election on the initial vote, with 66% deemed sufficient on a second round and 51% of a third.

But while the Lega Nazionale Dilettanti (LND) chief fell short at the second time of asking too, claiming 63.18%, he eventually secured the requisite support in the final round, with 63.63% voting in his favour.

With LND clubs holding a total of 34 per cent of voting rights in the FIGC election, the Lega Pro's announcement last week that it would support Tavecchio made his candidacy a near-certainty.

One of Tavecchio's first duties will be to help choose the new Italy national team coach, with former Juventus boss Antonio Conte the current front-runner for the role.

    Eto'o approaches Inter over return

    142400_heroa.jpg

Samuel Eto’o is dreaming of a sensational return to former club Inter and has put a potential move to Ajax on hold as he holds out for a second spell at San Siro.

The Cameroonian is a free agent after his contract with Chelsea expired this summer and spent the weekend in talks with Ajax over a possible move to the Amsterdam Arena.

But Eto’o’s preferred destination is Inter, the club where he won the treble during a brilliant two-year spell between 2009 and 2011.

The club's president, Erick Thohir, is currently against the idea of re-signing the 33-year-old due to his age and salary – which will be at least €4-5 million a season, working out at €10m gross.

Coach Walter Mazzarri is in the market for a frontman to complement current attackers Mauro Icardi, Pablo Osvaldo and Rodrigo Palacio, but would prefer a second striker rather than another penalty box type player.

But the ex-Barcelona star is not giving up just yet and, despite having offers on the table from both Ajax and Wolfsburg, he is prepared to give Thohir and Mazzarri more time to change their minds. The veteran will wait at least another week in the hope of receiving good news.

One month ago, Eto’o had agreed a potential transfer to Juventus but after discussions with the player’s representatives the Bianconeri decided that his wages were too high.

The veteran originally joined Inter as part of a swap deal involving Zlatan Ibrahimovic five years ago, with Barcelona paying €46 million for the Sweden star as well as allowing Eto'o to move in the other direction.

Under Jose Mourinho he scored 33 goals in 67 Serie A appearances before leaving the club for Anzhi Makhachkala in 2011.

    Watzke agrees new Dortmund deal

    418652_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke has agreed a three-year contract extension with the Bundesliga giants.

Watzke's previous deal was due to expire in December 2016, but he has now penned fresh terms until 2019.

The 55-year-old originally worked together with Dortmund president Reinhard Rauball to help save the club from insolvency in 2005.Since then, Dortmund have won the Bundesliga twice, the DFB-Pokal in 2012 and reached the final of the Champions League in 2013.

Watzke told the club's official website: "We maintain a trusting relationship at BVB.
"Borussia Dortmund has developed economically [and is] one of the healthiest representatives of European football at the top level."I am convinced that we are not yet at the end of our journey and I would like to contribute to this fantastic club in the future."

Rauball added: "Hans-Joachim Watzke has done outstanding work in the past few years. He was an architect of the recent past of BVB, is a builder of the present and will now operate sustainably the development of this great club."

My future is with Bayern - Neuer

    443221_heroa.jpg

Manuel Neuer says there is no chance of him leaving Bayern Munich after revealing his desire to spend the peak years of his career with the Bundesliga champions.

The goalkeeper lifted the World Cup with Germany over the summer and was rewarded for his performances with the Golden Glove award as the best No.1 at the tournament.

At club level, Neuer faces a renewed challenge between the posts following the arrival of Pepe Reina from Liverpool but revealed he is more content than ever before with life in Bavaria.

"Last season, until the end of March, we played the best football I've seen the club play and I want to continue to help Bayern progress," he told Kicker.

"I do not plan to move abroad. I could learn a new language one day, but this experience abroad can be done later.

"I would not rule it out, but at the moment I'm playing with one of the best teams, so I am in good hands."

At 28, the former Schalke man - who was booed upon signing for Bayern because of his ties with their Gelsenkirchen rivals - would appear to be entering his peak years.

And while he admits to suffering the occasional aching limb, Neuer pointed to the enduring quality of a Germany veteran as inspiration to continue long into his thirties.

"Roman Weidenfeller is still class at 34-years-old. I have a few more years ahead of me but at the moment it has been going well for me, even if I have a few aches and pains from time to time."
