Modric signs Real Madrid extension until 2018

    446783_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid have announced on their official website that they have reached an agreement with Luka Modric over a contract extension until the summer of 2018.

The Croatia international's previous deal was due to expire in June 2017, but he has now signed a new and improved contract that will keep him at the club for one additional season.

"Real Madrid C.F. announce the extension of Luka Modric's contract, linking him to the club for the next four seasons," a Madrid statement reads.

The 28-year-old joined the Santiago Bernabeu side from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2012 and has since developed into a key player at the Champions League holders.

Modric has made over 100 official appearances in all competitions for Madrid, winning the Supercopa de Espana, Copa del Rey, Champions League and European Super Cup during his spell at the Bernabeu so far.

The midfielder previously wore the jerseys of Dinamo Zagreb, Zrinjski and Inter Zapresic before signing for Spurs in 2008.

Schweinsteiger injury 'nothing long-term' - Rummenigge

    442516_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed that Bastian Schweinsteiger will be out of action for a number of weeks due to a knee injury, but has stressed that the midfielder's physical problems are nothing long term.

Schweinsteiger has been plagued by injury problems this year and will consequently miss the start of the 2014-15 campaign, but Rummenigge is not overly concerned about the Germany international's fitness.

"Schweinsteiger has a problem with his kneecap and was examined again on Monday," Rummenigge said at a press conference.

"It's going to take a few weeks to clear up and he won't be fit for the internationals in early September.

"We'll have to be patient but we're confident it's nothing long-term."

Bayern are believed to be in the market for a new centre-back following Javi Martinez's serious knee injury, but Rummenigge has made it clear they will only sign someone if the conditions are right.

"It's not our intention to panic or get nervous. We're in good shape, as everyone saw in the DFB Pokal game [against Preussen Munster]," he added.

"We have lots of quality in the squad and we're very relaxed. If we do choose to do anything it'll depend on quality and price. We'll monitor the situation calmly."

Wenger lodges Uefa complaint over thrown bottle

    443712_heroa.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has reported to Uefa an incident in which a bottle was thrown at him following his side's 0-0 draw with Besiktas.

The Gunners boss was walking off the pitch after his side, who had Aaron Ramsey sent off, failed to make the breakthrough in the first leg of their Champions League play-off.

The Frenchman says that someone in the crowd at the Ataturk Stadium attempted to strike him with a missile, with European football's governing body now in charge of investigating.

"As I left the pitch a bottle or something was thrown at me," Wenger told the media afterwards.

"I reported the incident to Uefa."

The Arsenal boss also declared after the match that his side are not close to making any further summer signings after a heavy close-season spend.

There's more to come this season, warns James

    446719_heroa.jpg

James Rodriguez has voiced his delight with his goal in Real Madrid's 1-1 Supercopa de Espana draw against Atletico Madrid and has warned that he will only get better in the weeks to come.

The former Monaco star came off the bench at half-time to replace Cristiano Ronaldo - who had picked up a knock in the opening 45 minutes - and opened the scoring in the 81st minute, only for Raul Garcia to restore parity in the closing stages of the game.

"I'm happy because it is day I had dreamed of. I'm getting there bit by bit and training session by training session. I'm improving. Hopefully I can score many more goals," James told the official Madrid website.

"I scored a goal, but we wanted to win and that wasn't to be. The victory was within reach, but now we have to go out to win in the Calderon. We have to be patient, look for spaces, pass the ball and try to score there.

"As a great team we have to go out to win no matter what. Hopefully I can score again in the Calderon and try to help my team win there."

The Colombia star added he hopes to see Ronaldo return to action swiftly after he was withdrawn with a muscle complaint.

"Cristiano just felt something during the match, hopefully it's not significant."

Alonso: It's easy to play with Kroos

    446787_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso says he finds it "easy" to play alongside new team-mate Toni Kroos.

Kroos enjoyed a strong game for Madrid as he started alongside the Spain veteran in the 1-1 Supercopa de Espana first-leg draw against Atletico Madrid.

Kroos almost scored in the second half, volleying over the bar, before playing a part in James Rodriguez's scrappy goal, and Alonso stated after the match that the Germany international will prove a valuable acquisition for the club.

"It's easy to play with big players like him," Alonso was quoted as saying by AS.

"Despite his youth he has experience at the highest level and is a great signing for the club."

James's 81st-minute opener was cancelled out by Raul Garcia's goal as Atletico took the upper hand heading into Friday's Supercopa second leg but Alonso maintains the tie is still wide open.

"They [Atletico] demanded a lot of us and are very compact. It's a strategy they're good at," he added.

"They drew level and it could have been a better result for us but it's still open for the return."

Reus will not leave Dortmund for money, insists Watzke

    446484_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke is hopeful that the Bundesliga giants can hold on to Marco Reus amid ongoing rumours linking him with clubs such as Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Atletico Madrid.

The Germany international could be in line for a significant payrise if he were to leave BVB for one of Europe's giants, yet Watzke is confident that the 25-year-old is not the kind of player to let financial gains dominate his future.

"We will have to wait and see whether we can hold on to Marco. But I know him really well and I can say that it's not about money for him," Watzke told Der Westen.

"We will hold talks with him and the total package we can offer will be important. It's about finances, ambition and the faith we show in the player. I have the feeling that our players are happy at BVB. I didn't have the same feeling with the players who left us in the past. And that's an understatement."

Reus is a product of the Dortmund youth academy and Watzke believes the versatile attacker is destined to become a club legend irrespective of winning silverware.

"People talk too much about winning titles. What I'm trying to tell is that Marco Reus can mark an era as a Dortmund player. He can become a club legend. That's much more important than one or two more titles.

"Marco Reus can carry this club, his club, the club from his hometown. Why is Franz Beckenbauer such a legend in Munich? Wolfgang Overath, Uwe Seeler, Fritz Walter... People still know where these guys played and what they achieved there in 100 years' time."

The former Borussia Monchengladbach attacker - who returned to Dortmund in 2012 - has a release clause in his contract that allows him to leave BVB for a reputed €35 million fee in the summer of 2015 and Watzke has stressed that the club had no other choice but to accept the player's wish at the time of his arrival.

"He joined Dortmund from Gladbach and perhaps people in his entourage told him that a release clause would allow him to leave if things didn't work out. We were not at the same level as now back then," Watzke explained.

"Right now, we would not include any release clauses, but he insisted on having one. Marco had 10 offers or so and we had to compromise. He might have moved elsewhere had we not agreed on including a release clause.

"We will do our utmost to convince Marco that his future is at Dortmund. Plus he can win titles here at Dortmund, too."

The forward's current deal is due to expire in 2017, but BVB are keen to extend his existing deal and remove the buy-out clause.

    :shocked:FIFA Upholds Barcelona Transfer Ban

    i

Barcelona will be unable to sign new players in the next two windows after a FIFA committee upheld their transfer ban.The ban, suspended in April pending an appeal, was handed down after Barca were found guilty of breaching rules governing the international transfer of minors.

Barca fought their corner with FIFA's Appeals Committee but have been told the embargo stands. The club immediately confirmed it will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS).The FIFA ruling means there will be no new arrivals at the Nou Camp between this September and January 2016 - provided CAS do not overturn the ruling.

A FIFA statement read: "FC Barcelona is to serve a transfer ban which will see the club prevented from registering any players at both national and international level for two complete and consecutive transfer periods, starting with the next registration period (January 2015)."Barcelona has also been ordered to pay a fine of 450,000 Swiss francs (£296,000) and been given a period of 90 days from today in which to regularise the situation of all minor players concerned."

Barca took advantage of the ban's temporary suspension to bring in several big-money signings this summer, most notably Luis Suarez. The ruling means they can further add to their squad between now and the end of the current window. The Spanish Football Federation, fined as part of the initial verdict, also had an appeal rejected.

Modric: Real Madrid have made my dreams come true

    446813_heroa.jpg

Luka Modric has hailed Real Madrid for making all of his dreams come true after penning a new contract with the club on Wednesday.

The Croatia international joined Los Blancos from Tottenham in 2012 and initially struggled to justify his reported €40 million transfer fee.

However, last season he proved himself one of Madrid's most reliable performers, playing a key role in their Champions League and Copa del Rey triumphs, and has now been rewarded with an extension, which runs until 2018.

“I’m very happy," Modric told his club's official website. "Today is an important day for me.

"I’d like to thank the club and president Florentino Perez for the confidence they have placed in me. I would like to return that confidence by giving my best in the coming years.

“When I came to Real Madrid, all my dreams came true. These years have been magnificent, I have enjoyed every moment and I’ve had fun.

"In the coming years, I’m going to give even more. My dream continues with my renewal. I hope we can win many more titles in the years to come."

Indeed, having already lifted the Uefa Super Cup this season, Modric is now hoping to help Madrid claim the second of their six trophy targets for 2014-15 by overcoming city rivals Atletico in the second leg of their Supercopa de Espana tie at the Vicente Calderon on Friday night.

“When I arrived here two years ago, we won the Supercup of Spain," he mused. "It was my first match. Hopefully we can win another Supercup in Atletico’s ground.

"I’m feeling really confident and it would be very significant to start the season by winning another title after the European Super Cup. We’re going to give our all to bring more satisfaction to the club."

Marquinhos: I must do better at PSG this year

    434808_heroa.jpg

Marquinhos says he will stay at Paris Saint-Germain this season but insists he must improve on his debut campaign at the club.

The Brazilian defender found himself in and out of the PSG side last season, making 21 Ligue 1 appearances in his first year following a move from Roma.

His inability to hold down a regular place in Laurent Blanc's starting XI saw him linked with a move away from the French capital this summer, but the 20-year-old says he will stay at the Parc des Princes and hopes to become a more important player for the team.

"Last season the situation was I didn't have a very good sequence technically as a starter at PSG," he told ESPN Brasil.
"But I did have a good run of games at the start of this season because of the World Cup and all the players who were there being on holiday.

"I have played every game so far, from pre-season to the start of the season - it has been a good run for me.

"Initially, I will stay at Paris Saint-Germain. I want to continue my work here. There were a few conversations with other clubs, but the president soon shut those down and rejected to negotiate me.

"He trusts me a lot, so my path for now is to stay at PSG. We have Thiago Silva and David Luiz who are two of the best defenders in the world and for me it is very good to be with them, so that I can learn and show my value and be as good as they are."The centre-back has been included in new Brazil coach Dunga's first squad for their friendlies in the United States next month.

The youngster admits he is still disappointed at being overlooked by Luiz Felipe Scolari for the World Cup, despite his absence meaning he avoided the 7-1 humiliation at the hands of Germany..

Marquinhos continued: "I had expectations about being at the World Cup. Up until the moment of the call up I was doing a good job and trying to keep myself playing at a good level. I had a few good matches at the end of the season.“But it didn't happen. I was very conscious and I kept my feet on the ground, I knew it would be very hard to begin with.

"I was working for it, I wanted to be there, I dreamt of playing a World Cup at home. It's not just because it ended badly that I should be relieved or say that I escaped a sinking ship. I wanted to be there, that is the truth."
