    Official: Everton sign Eto'o

    449147_heroa.jpg

Everton have signed free agent Samuel Eto'o on a two-year contract.

The vastly experienced striker has been without a club since leaving Chelsea at the end of June following the end of a one-year deal.

And Everton manager Roberto Martinez has beaten off competition from a host of rival clubs to secure the services of the 33-year-old, paving the way for Eto'o to potentially face his former club at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The former Mallorca, Barcelona and Inter striker has scored over 250 goals in a club career that has seen him win both the Champions League and La Liga three times as well as Serie A, the Coppa Italia, Club World Cup and Copa del Rey.

Eto'o – who had been linked with Liverpool before the Anfield club signed Mario Balotelli from AC Milan on Monday - scored nine goals in 21 Premier League appearances for Chelsea last season and will bolster an Everton attack that includes club-record signing Romelu Lukaku.

Ajax also held talks with Eto'o but he has opted to remain in England.

:love::love:Official: Manchester United sign Di Maria

    449145_heroa.jpg

Manchester United have completed the signing of Real Madrid ace Angel Di Maria, who becomes the most expensive signing in Premier League history.

    1409078724916_wps_3_Manchester_United_ManUtd_.jpg

The Argentina international, who can play across the frontline and in midfield, moves to Old Trafford in a deal worth €75 million and is now the fifth costliest player ever.

The 26-year-old, who United hope can galvanise a squad that has picked up just a single point from their opening two league matches, has signed a five-year contract worth close to the £300,000-a-week earned by skipper Wayne Rooney.

    1409077679721_wps_1_Manchester_United_ManUtd_.jpg

Including wages, add-ons, bonuses and signing-on fees, the total cost of the deal could rise to as much as €188m.

    1409077704596_wps_3_MANCHESTER_ENGLAND_AUGUST.jpg

Di Maria completed his medical on Tuesday having arrived at Carrington with his entourage late in the morning, while his agent had several hours of sit-down talks with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward in the afternoon to thrash out the final details of the contract.

    1409077772642_wps_6_MANCHESTER_ENGLAND_AUGUST.jpg

The 20-time English champions have been chasing Di Maria for several weeks and were given a free run at the Argentine when Paris Saint-Germain pulled out of the race for his signature.

He has been itching for a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu since the arrivals of James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos shunted him down the Madrid pecking order, and was understood to be very keen on working with Louis van Gaal.

Di Maria played a key role for Los Blancos last season as they lifted the Champions League, while he recorded a division-high 17 assists in La Liga before finishing as a runner-up at the World Cup in Brazil.

The big-money deal takes United's summer spending to in excess of €160m, meaning they have now spent more than any other club in the world this summer, eclipsing Barcelona's €150m outlay.

They may not be finished there either, with a shaky and dysfunctional defence likely to be reinforced by the possible arrival of Ajax's Daley Blind, while Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal remains a long-term target.

:cool:Di Maria: Van Gaal has a vision

    449145_heroa.jpg

Angel Di Maria says that the chance to work with Louis van Gaal was one of the deciding factors behind his move to Manchester United.

The Argentine has penned a five-year deal with the Old Trafford club following four seasons at Real Madrid, culminating in a Champions League win last year.

He is excited to be moving to United, claiming that only they made leaving Carlo Ancelotti's side an appetising prospect.

"Louis van Gaal is a fantastic coach with a proven track record of success and I am impressed by the vision and determination everyone has to get this club back to the top – where it belongs," he told the club's official website.

"I now just cannot wait to get started."

The former Benfica man also explained that United were the only club for whom he would leave the Santiago Bernabeu.

"I am absolutely delighted to be joining Manchester United," he added.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Spain and there were a lot of clubs interested in me but United is the only club that I would have left Real Madrid for."

Di Maria will be available for the club's trip to Burnley on Saturday.

Celtic 0-1 Maribor (1-2 Agg): Hoops crash out of Champions League after home defeat

    449175_heroa.jpg

Celtic were eliminated from the Champions League for the second time this season after losing 1-0 at home to Maribor and 2-1 on aggregate.

Ronny Deila's men had been given a stay of execution in the previous round thanks to Legia Warsaw fielding an ineligible player but, after drawing in the first game, the Scottish champions failed to exploit home advantage against the Slovenian side.

Marcos Tavares got the decisive goal, looping the ball over Craig Gordon after Celtic were unable to properly clear their lines 75 minutes into proceedings.

Moses in line for Stoke debut - Hughes

    439572_heroa.jpg

Victor Moses is primed to make his Stoke City debut in Wednesday's League Cup clash with Portsmouth.

The Nigeria international has yet to feature for the Potters since joining on loan from Chelsea but the 23-year-old will get the chance to press his claims for a first-team place in the second-round clash at the Britannia Stadium.

And manager Mark Hughes has challenged Moses, who spent last season on loan at Liverpool, to make the most of the opportunity against the League Two side.

"[Moses] will start the game for us," the Stoke boss told the press on Tuesday.

"It is important for him to get the shirt on and get out there because he hasn't had as much game time as he would have liked over the past 12 months.

"He is a very good footballer and somebody that we are very happy to have here.

"It is a win-win situation for us all, to be honest. I am sure that, if we can get him up to speed quickly, we will have a great player on our hands."

Official: Hull City complete Dawson deal

    448627_heroa.jpg

Hull City have completed the signing of Tottenham centre-back Michael Dawson on a three-year deal.

The defender leaves Spurs on an undisclosed fee, with the north Londoners keen to stress that he will "always be welcome" at White Hart Lane.

"I have been here for almost a decade and have loved every minute of it," Dawson told Tottenham's official website.

"I would like to say thank you to everyone at the club, including the supporters.

"We have enjoyed some incredible moments together and I hope the club continues to move forward in the future."

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy added: "Michael has been an outstanding club representative both on and off the field.

"He has always given everything for the Spurs shirt - just one of the reasons he is so deservedly popular throughout the club."

Dawson, now 30, made 236 Premier League appearances for Tottenham after joining the club from Nottingham Forest in January 2005.

Agger: My future at Liverpool still uncertain

    408443_heroa.jpg

Daniel Agger has admitted his future at Liverpool is still uncertain ahead of the close of the transfer window.

The Denmark international made 20 Premier League appearances last season but faces further competition in central defence due to the summer arrival of Dejan Lovren from Southampton.

Goal understands that Liverpool have been open to offers for the 29-year-old all summer and Agger admits he could move clubs over the next seven days.

"The future is complicated," he told Jyllands-Posten. "There are a few things that have to be sorted and we have to take it from there.

"I actually don't know what will happen. It is a bit up to Liverpool. I have had niggling injuries at the wrong times and I have to say that it is difficult to change the team when it is winning.

"I am not frustrated by that. I am frustrated the way it happened and the way it was handled."

:(MK Dons 4-0 Manchester United: Van Gaal's side shocked by League One outfit

    449176_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal is still yet to pick up a win as Manchester United boss after a shock 4-0 defeat to MK Dons in the League Cup second round.

Van Gaal picked a mixture of inexperienced young players and those on the fringes of his squad, including Danny Welbeck, Javier Hernandez, Shinji Kagawa and Anderson.

But a Jonny Evans error allowed Will Grigg to open the scoring in the first half, sweeping the ball past David de Gea from close range.

With United chasing an equaliser after the interval, Grigg made it 2-0 with a clever chested finish from an excellent Ben Reeves cross and it was Arsenal loanee Benik Afobe who came off the bench to secure the victory with two goals to mark an historic night for the home side.

The last time that United entered the competition at this phase, in 1995, they suffered the ignominy of losing a two-legged tie 4-3 to York City - including a 3-0 reverse at Old Trafford - and memories of such embarrassment were brought back to the fore as MK Dons outworked and, most damningly, out-passed their illustrious opponents to secure a famous triumph.

A United team loaded with players determined to catch Van Gaal's eye started confidently as Danny Welbeck, in particular, caused problems. The visitors' endeavour almost brought immediate reward, Nick Powell curling just over the crossbar.

MK Dons came back into the game, although their possession was not producing opportunities. However, Karl Robinson's men were gifted an opener in the 25th minute by an Evans howler. The centre-back's pass from defence was intercepted by Reeves, whose simple ball left Grigg with the easiest of taps-in.

That seemed to knock the wind out of United's sails, although Powell threatened to reinvigorate his side when firing just wide from range with the outside of his foot.

Things almost went from bad to worse after the interval, when MK Dons were denied a penalty when Evans appeared to have handled in the area, but United could not take advantage of that break, Welbeck curling a powerful effort just wide of the post.

And their misery was compounded in the 63rd minute, Reeves and Grigg combining again in a fine move that ended with the latter cleverly chesting home his team-mate's perfect left-wing cross.

Any thoughts of a United revival were snuffed out by Grigg's replacement, Afobe, who then slid home easily after being picked out by Danny Green.

James Wilson almost levelled, United's first shot on target coming in the 72nd minute when David Martin produced a superb one-handed save to deny the highly rated striker's 20-yard strike.

Adnan Januzaj rattled the post but, if anything, Van Gaal's side were lucky not to lose by more with David de Gea forced to turn away Dean Lewington's cross.

Relief at that quickly turned to further despair, however, as Afobe bundled his way into the box and volleyed home to create a scarcely believable scoreline.

Hope continued to come in the shape of Wilson, whose header again forced Martin into an excellent save, although that was scant consolation for Van Gaal.

    Official: Crystal Palace appoint Warnock

    449363_heroa.jpg

Crystal Palace have confirmed the appointment of Neil Warnock as the club's new manager.

The veteran boss, who parted company with Leeds United last year, spent almost three seasons at Selhurst Park between 2007 and 2010 before moving to QPR.

As reported by Goal, he beat off competition from Steve Clarke to land the position, with chairman Steve Parish having finally found a successor to Tony Pulis after the former Stoke City manager's abrupt exit.

Both Steve Clarke and Warnock are believed to have been interviewed this week after ex-cardiff City boss Malky Mackay withdrew from the running.

The Scot's bid for the vacancy collapsed following allegations of appropriate text messages between himself and Iain Moody while the pair were at the Welsh outfit - with the latter since resigning from his role as sporting director at Selhurst Park.

Adriano set to make Barcelona return from heart problem

    413580_heroa.jpg

Barcelona defender Adriano has been given the all-clear to return to action just over a month after being diagnosed with a heart murmur.

The cardiac condiation was detected on July 16 and resulted in the versatile full-back sitting out his club's entire pre-season programme, as well as last weekend's Liga opener against Elche.

However, Adriano is now in contention to make his comeback in Sunday's meeting with Villarreal at El Madrigal.

"The Brazilian received the medical all-clear after training this Wednesday morning," read a statement on Barca's official website.

Adriano's return to full training comes less than 24 hours after the Catalans confirmed the imminent arrival of another Brazilian full-back at Camp Nou, with Sao Paulo's Douglas is set to seal a €5.5 million move to Barcelona later in the week.

Sevilla's Fazio set to seal Spurs switch

    396710_heroa.jpg

Tottenham are set to complete the signing of defender Federico Fazio from Sevilla.

Spurs have paid the €10 million buyout clause in Fazio’s contract and the Argentine has agreed a four-year contract to move to White Hart Lane.

The 27-year-old is due to complete his move on Wednesday and will replace Michael Dawson after Tottenham sold their club captain to Hull.

Tottenham pushed through a deal to sign Fazio after all but giving up on their chances of signing Villarreal centre-back Mateo Musacchio.

Spurs hoped to sign Musacchio in a €21m deal but the transfer hit the rocks over third-party ownership issues and a sell-on clause due to his former club River Plate.

Fazio has made two appearances for Argentina and was Sevilla’s captain last season as the Spanish club won the Europa League.

Tottenham are expecting a busy end to the transfer window, with a number of players potentially leaving the club as Mauricio Pochettino looks to trim his squad.

Vlad Chiriches, Sandro, Paulinho and Lewis Holtby are among the players who could be sold before the window closes next Monday.
