:(Leicester City 5-3 Manchester United: Vardy and Ulloa combine to crush Van Gaal’s flops

    458901_heroa.jpg

Jamie Vardy and Leonardo Ulloa were the heroes as Leicester City roared back from two goals down to claim a famous win over Manchester United in a eight-goal thriller at King Power Stadium.

Two goals in three minutes from Robin van Persie and Angel di Maria put United in a commanding position early on but Ulloa's header ensured Leicester were still alive at the interval.

Ander Herrera appeared to have settled matters when his flick wrong-footed Kasper Schmeichel to put United 3-1 up, but David Nugent struck from the penalty spot on 62 minutes before summer signing Esteban Cambiasso brought the hosts level moments later with a low drive.

United poured forward in search of a winner but it was Leicester who showed the greater ruthlessness, with Vardy applying a clinical finish to a counter-attack and Ulloa converting a penalty which saw youngster Tyler Blackett sent off.

Radamel Falcao made his expected United debut, replacing the in-form Juan Mata, with captain Wayne Rooney eased back into a slightly deeper role.

Vardy was one of four changes for Leicester alongside former United trainee Danny Drinkwater, Cambiasso and son of Old Trafford legend Peter Schmeichel, goalkeeper Kasper.

Schmeichel was called into early work after Van Persie was fed by Di Maria, but he could do nothing about the Dutchman's deflected header from a superb Falcao cross which put the visitors ahead on 13 minutes.

The lead was doubled in sublime fashion three minutes later when Di Maria linked up with Rooney before the Argentina star lifted a delightful effort over the helpless keeper.

However, United were almost immediately caught cold at the other end when Vardy got to the byline and crossed for Ulloa to head home powerfully to David de Gea's left.

The visitors suffered another setback when Jonny Evans limped off and was replaced by Chris Smalling with less than half an hour gone, but both defences just about managed to hold firm for the rest of a fast and furious first period.

Falcao went close to restoring United's two-goal cusion at the start of the second half when controlling a Rooney pass and firing a half-volley against the crossbar, but it proved a temporary respite for Leicester. It was Herrera who did claim the third when flicking a Di Maria strike from the edge of the area past a stranded Schmeichel on 57 minutes.

However, Leicester again showed great heart to rally through a Nugent spot kick after Rafael da Silva shoved Vardy in the box and Cambiasso connected sweetly with a shot from just inside the area to level the scores just after the hour.

As United poured forward in search of a winner, they were caught woefully short in defence.

Mata, on as a substitute, was robbed by Ritchie De Laet, whose throughball released Vardy - the former Fleetwood Town man keeping his nerve to slot past De Gea one-on-one.

A mesmerising comeback was complete just four minutes later, more defensive dithering allowed Vardy in on goal again and Blackett could only chop him down in the penalty area, earning the youngster a straight red card and providing Ulloa the chance to cap a stunning outing for Leicester and a first home win in the top flight since May 2004.

Tottenham 0-1 West Brom: Morrison sinks sorry Spurs

    458909_heroa.jpg

West Brom earned their first win of the new Premier League season as they defeated Tottenham 1-0 at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

The Hawthorns club have endured a mixed start to life under Alan Irvine, but answered their critics with a defiant performance that was capped off with a headed goal from James Morrison.

Tottenham were unchanged from their draw with Sunderland last weekend having rotated heavily in Europe in midweek, while Joleon Lescott was handed his debut in defence as Irvine made two changes to his team.

But it was Lescott's defensive colleague Craig Dawson who almost made the first telling contribution to the match, nodding narrowly over after finding himself stationed high up the pitch following a corner.

The hosts were then given another early warning when Saido Berahino latched onto a ball over the top but took himself too wide to trouble the goalkeeper with a poor initial touch.

Tottenham showed plenty of attacking promise of their own in the opening stages, yet it was the visitors who arguably had the best of the chances.

Lescott was unfortunate to miss out on a debut goal when Dawson accidentally blocked his shot from close range, while Craig Gardner brought an excellent save from Hugo Lloris with a shot from distance.

And West Brom then had a legitimate claim for a penalty turned down when Dawson's header appeared to strike Emmanuel Adebayor's hand.

Spurs eventually rallied, and only a remarkable recovery tackle from Lescott prevented Adebayor from making a more positive impression at the other end moments after his fortunate escape.

But the visitors thought they had broken the deadlock before half-time when Berahino turned the ball home only to see it ruled out after a marginal offside call.

Berahino was also involved in the first truly threatening moment of the second half as he punctuated an end-to-end passage of play by cutting inside Vlad Chiriches before stinging Lloris' palms with a left-footed drive.

Unsurprisingly, Mauricio Pochettino had seen enough, and was prompted into a double change that saw Mousa Dembele and Nacer Chadli make way for Paulinho and Roberto Soldado.

The Scotland international nodded home a 74th-minute corner from Chris Brunt - who received strong criticism from fans for his performance in the defeat to Everton last weekend - and West Brom held onto their lead despite a spirited effort from the hosts.
And the Tottenham boss was almost immediately rewarded when only some brave goalkeeping from Ben Foster prevented Soldado from capitalising on a spill in the box.

The teams continued to exchange chances with Morrison and Soldado testing Lloris and Foster respectively as the game opened up.

But it was set-piece, rather than a swashbuckling counter, that handed West Brom the lead, with Morrison finding acres of space from Brunt's corner to head in unmarked.

Tottenham pushed hard to get back on terms before the final whistle, but the visitors' obstinate back line could not be shaken.

And that was typified by a marvellous headed clearance on the goalline from Dawson at the death that saw West Brom keep hold of all three points.

Feyenoord 0-1 Ajax: Van Rhijn strike seals win for champions

    458960_heroa.jpg

Champions Ajax stole all three points against rivals Feyenoord in Rotterdam on Sunday, a game where the hosts dominated every statistic other than the one that mattered, in goals scored.

Fred Rutten’s team enjoyed 63% of possession in this contest, as well as having 16 attempts on goal. But they found Dutch World Cup ‘keeper Jasper Cillessen in unbeatable form, while a single goal by Ricardo van Rhijn ultimately gave Ajax victory, one which takes them up to second spot and three points behind leaders PSV.

Only once in the previous 116 Eredivisie between these two sides has there been a goalless draw and after the opening exchanges there appeared little likelihood of that statistic changing.

Feyenoord took the game to the title holders and were unlucky not to take the lead after just 60 seconds when Jean-Paul Boetius fed captain Jordy Clasie inside the Ajax box, but his left-foot effort cannoned off the crossbar with Cillessen beaten.
Three minutes later, Feyenoord attacked down the opposite flank but again, to the frustration of the home bench and fans, the outcome was identical.

Australian Luke Wilkshire centred from the right, his cross arriving on the head of Ruben Schaken, but his powerful attempt smashed against the bar with Cillessen again a mere spectator.

After the poor start they had made to the season, these were encouraging signs from last season’s Eredivisie runners-up, but completely against the flow of play, Ajax took a shock lead.Feyenoord conceded a free-kick 30 metres out which full-back Ricardo van Rhijn struck beautifully, right-footed, the ball swinging beyond the static Kenneth Vermeer.

The hosts looked bewildered at such a turnaround if fortunes, but there was little in the way of luck going Feyenoord’s way. If anything, their pain was compounded when in the 10th minute Miguel Nelom crossed from the left to the far post where central defender Sven van Beek sent his deliberate header rebounding off the frame of the goal for a third time.

Ajax, apart from their goal, had seen little of the ball as Feyenoord pressed, and Colin Kazim-Richards had Cillessen scrambling across his goal with a speculative shot - with the outside of his right boot - from distance.

Frank de Boer’s men did manage to relieve the pressure occasionally and on one forward raid Vermeer was forced into a good save, high to his left, as Anwar El Ghazi tried to double the visitors advantage.

From the resulting corner, Kolbeinn Sigthorsson glanced a header across the face of the Feyenoord goal. However, Feyenoord continued to take the game to Ajax, and Kazim-Richards was guilty of a dreadful miss minutes before the interval.

Picked out by Jens Toornstra’s through pass, Kazim-Richards controlled and cut inside Niklas Moisander in one movement off his right boot, but then dragged his left-foot shot wide of the Ajax goal. It was a costly miss, given how much Feyenoord had put into the first period.Early in the second half, Vermeer made a good stop to deny Sigthorsson from a tight angle, but that was nothing to the crucial save at the other end from Cillessen.

Seventeen minutes from time, Wilkshire’s free kick was met by Boetius, his header frocing Cillessen to change direction, clawing the ball out with his left hand.

Feyenoord continued to press right into stoppage time, and substitute Mitchell te Vrede was twice denied in quick succession, firstly when his shot was blocked on the line after a good run from Manu, then by the in-form Cillessen who tipped te Vrede’s header over from under the bar.

Manchester City 1-1 Chelsea: Lampard ends Mourinho’s perfect start

    458991_heroa.jpg

Frank Lampard came back to haunt Chelsea as 10-man Manchester City rallied to earn a share of the spoils after a dramatic encounter at the Etihad Stadium.

Andre Schurrle applied a clinical finish to Eden Hazard's superb cross to give the Blues the lead on 71 minutes, shortly after Pablo Zabaleta had received a second booking for bringing down Diego Costa.

Costa then struck a post before Lampard, on as a second-half substitute, volleyed James Milner's cross beyond Thibaut Courtois with five minutes left to give the Premier League champions an unlikely equaliser.

The goal ended Chelsea's 100 per cent start to the league season, and Mourinho will rue a missed opportunity to go eight points clear of arguably their fiercest rivals.

Manuel Pellegrini took the surprise step of handing Eliaquim Mangala something of a baptism of fire. The Frenchman made his debut in place of Martin Demichelis as one of four changes from Wednesday's defeat to Bayern Munich.

Diego Costa's hamstrings held up enough to see him lead Chelsea's line, bumping Didier Drogba back to the bench after a lacklustre show in their Champions League draw with Schalke.

The Spain striker's first contribution to the contest was a full-blooded 50-50 with Vincent Kompany that saw him come off second best after Yaya Toure had forced the first save of the game out of Joe Hart.

Though Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic's influence in midfield increased, the visitors were unable to completely stem the flow of City attacks and were fortunate to see Fernandinho fail to properly connect with Aleksandar Kolarov's cut-back and Sergio Aguero half-volley an Edin Dzeko knockdown over the crossbar when he might have done better. But neither side could find a breakthrough before half-time, despite Aguero and Costa getting brief glimpses at goal just prior to the break.

Mourinho will undoubtedly have called for more from his players during the interval, but City picked up where they left off following the restart.

Aguero tested Thibaut Courtois early on with a left-footed attempt from the edge of the box moments before just failing to control a cross into the box when a goal would have been the likely outcome.

The Argentine again was at the heart of things when his snapshot forced another Courtois save but Ramires was on hand to clear the rebound with Dzeko lurking.
City's hopes of making the most of the ascendancy received a significant blow with just over an hour gone, as Zabaleta received his marching orders after a clip of Costa's heels brought a second yellow card.

That forced Pellegrini into a reshuffle that saw Dzeko make way for Bacary Sagna but the addition of another defender could not prevent Chelsea taking the lead.
The visitors broke incisively from an opposition corner before Costa played Eden Hazard into enough space on the right-hand side to pick out a delightful low cross that Schurrle turned in at the back post.

Costa thumped the post from distance but the hosts responded to rescue an unlikely point in the most incredible of circumstances, Chelsea's record goalscorer Lampard turning home James Milner's smartly volleyed cross.

Lampard predictably refused to celebrate, but even went close to securing a winner as Chelsea's fine early progress was checked for the first time.

Ramos: Intensity key to Deportivo thrashing

    458266_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos praised his side’s ruthless mental approach following their 8-2 thrashing of Deportivo la Coruna at the Riazor on Saturday.

The result took Madrid’s tally to 13 goals in their last two games following Tuesday night’s 5-1 trouncing of Basel in the Champions League, which coach Carlo Ancelotti heralded as the perfect reaction to back-to-back defeats to Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid. And Ramos was impressed with his side’s dominance on Saturday and called on his colleagues to ensure they sustain that level of intensity.

“It was difficult at first, but the team was very clear about what it wanted to do and we applied a lot of pressure and intensity,” said the 28-year-old.“We were very clinical, winning the ball back and keeping possession. In the second half we maintained the intensity and the desire to score goals.

“The changes are the results. In football you go through periods that are not as good as what Real Madrid is accustomed to, but you can't complain and you have to change the situation.“The team has been scoring well since the last Champions League game. Now we have to maintain it in all competitions.”

Madrid host Elche on Tuesday before a trip to Villarreal next weekend.

Guardiola: Fixture congestion taking its toll

    457009_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola has hinted European exploits may have taken their toll on his side after Saturday's 0-0 draw with Hamburg.A frustrating afternoon saw a much-changed Bayern side struggle to find any meaningful attacking fluidity against Hamburg, who will have delighted new boss Josef Zinnbauer with an impressive rearguard display.

And Guardiola suggested that it was the nature of the fixture list that conspired most against his team at the Imtech Arena, with Bayern coming into the game on the back off a hard-fought 1-0 win over Manchester City in midweek.

"It was not easy to come into this game on the back of a Champions League match against Manchester City. In the second half it was a bit better, but unfortunately we did not take our chances," he told the club's official website.

However, the Spaniard insisted his side were capable of rising to the challenge of firing on all fronts and hitting top form once again. "We now have to keep working until December. It is a tough time ahead," he added.

One of Bayern's best chances of the game fell to Philipp Lahm midway through the second half, and he echoed the frustration expressed by his boss after the game.
He told reporters: "We can't really be happy when we only get a draw. In the second half, we definitely had the chances to win the game."In the first half, though, we weren't quite at our best. We'll focus on Tuesday now."

That game on Tuesday will see the champions travel to newly promoted Paderborn, who are the surprise leaders in the Bundesliga, thanks to a 2-0 win over Hannover on Saturday.

    Klopp: Dortmund deserved to lose

    457709_heroa.jpg

Jurgen Klopp says Borussia Dortmund deserved to lose to Mainz because of their inability to take their chances and poor defending.

Adrian Ramos missed three glaring chances before Dortmund allowed Jairo to get a cross in and left Shinji Okazaki unmarked to break the deadlock at the Coface Arena. Then, after Ciro Immobile had missed the chance to equalise from the penalty spot, more disorganised defending then led to Matthias Ginter putting it into his own net to put the game out of Dortmund's reach.

Klopp believes his side would have won had they capitalised on the chances they created, but admitted they were duly punished for their failure to do so.

"We could have been worthy winners if we had taken our chances," Klopp told reporters. "Instead, we defended poorly twice and were deserved losers."We had a lot of good moments in the game. We started very well but then took our feet off the gas."But if you concede two goals in the second half, you deserve to lose. We should have been much more active for their first goal. We defended badly today.

"Adrian [Ramos] also could have taken one of his chances. Today he didn't manage to. In a game like this you need those things to go for you."And Ciro didn't make a clean connection on his penalty. It happens in football."Erik Durm, who began his career at Mainz as a striker before Jurgen Klopp converted him into a full-back, also rued Dortmund's wasteful finishing.

"We played well for the first 20 or 30 minutes. We got forward and created good opportunities.

"However, we must be more clinical in front of goal."

AC Milan 0-1 Juventus: Tevez silences San Siro

    458663_heroa.jpg

Massimiliano Allegri enjoyed a winning return to AC Milan as Carlos Tevez struck the only goal in Juventus' 1-0 win in Serie A on Saturday.

Making his first return to San Siro since being sacked in January, the former Rossoneri coach watched his new side create a handful of chances, but he had to wait until the 71st minute for the decisive goal.

The visitors were impressive in the opening half as Roberto Pereyra and Giorgio Chiellini both had sights of goal, while Claudio Marchisio saw a low shot come back off the post.Milan struggled to contain the defending champions and eventually succumbed to Tevez's goal, following a superb Paul Pogba pass.

Fernando Torres' introduction for his debut with 15 minutes left to play was not enough to spark Milan in to life and they slipped to their first competitive defeat under new head coach Filippo Inzaghi. As in their Champions League win over Malmo on Tuesday, Juventus dominated possession but were left frustrated for long spells.

Milan's back four remained resolute throughout the first half, with only Pereyra - who returned after his European suspension - going close early on with a sixth-minute effort that curled just over.

For all Juve's control, it was the hosts who were first to test the opposition goalkeeper, as Keisuke Honda brought a smart save out of Gianluigi Buffon after 26 minutes.Having drifted away from Chiellini, the Japan international was superbly found by Sulley Muntari’s cross-field pass, but his close-range header was parried away.

That appeared to breathe new life into Allegri's side and Christian Abbiati - who came in for the injured Diego Lopez - was twice called into action to deny Fernando Llorente and then Pereyra in the space of four minutes.

Juventus were slowly building up momentum and Chiellini wasted their best opening of the half when, having timed his run perfectly to meet Marchisio's chipped pass, he failed to connect with a header from six yards.Marchisio was beginning to have a significant impact and the midfielder was unlucky not to open the scoring before the break when his low effort struck the post with Abbiati well beaten.

The second half followed the same pattern as the first, with the ball stuck in midfield in the opening 15 minutes and neither side able to find an opening. That changed on the hour, though, as a Pereyra delivered a low corner to the near post, where Marchisio - who had evaded his marker - could only send a low shot wide of goal.

Milan's impact on the game continued to dwindle and Juve began to turn the screw, launching wave after wave of attack. And with 19 minutes to play their pressure finally paid off, as Pogba delivered an exquisite pass into Tevez, who showed great feet to net his second league goal of the season.

In an attempt to change Milan's fortunes, Inzaghi introduced Giacomo Bonaventura, Giampaolo Pazzini and Torres - the latter for the first time since his loan switch from Chelsea - but the trio struggled to make an impact as Juventus dictated the closing stages.

Jeremy Menez thought he should have had a penalty late on following a challenge from Chiellini, but his and Milan's appeals were waved away as Allegri celebrated.

Atletico Madrid 2-2 Celta: Miranda goes from hero to villain as champions are held at home

    458655_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid's disappointing week continued as they missed the chance to go top of La Liga by being held to a 2-2 draw by Celta at the Vicente Calderon. The Spanish champions were beaten 3-2 by Olympiakos in the Champions League on Tuesday, and dropped points in La Liga mean they could now finish the weekend four points adrift of Barcelona, should the table-toppers beat Levante on Sunday.

Pablo Hernandez gave Celta the lead with an outrageous finish after 19 minutes, but Atletico were ahead at the break courtesy of goals from centre-back pairing Miranda and Diego Godin. However, the former undid his good work by giving away a penalty early in the second half, which was subsequently converted by Nolito.

Atletico piled the pressure on in the latter stages, forcing Celta goalkeeper Sergio Alvarez into several saves before substitute Alessio Cerci had an injury-time goal disallowed for offside, but they had to settle for a point in the final game of coach Diego Simeone's touchline ban.The hosts almost broke the deadlock in the 15th minute as Tiago burst into the area to meet Juanfran's low cross, but the midfielder's first-time effort flew just wide.

And Atletico were made to regret that miss four minutes later, as Hernandez gave Celta the lead in audacious fashion. The Chilean tussled with Godin as Carles Planas' cross from deep appeared set to fly over their heads, but Hernandez somehow managed to pull off an incredible volleyed backheel, sending the ball past Miguel Angel Moya.

Alvarez then twice denied Atletico an equaliser, but he was powerless in the 31st minute, as the unmarked Miranda directed Koke's free-kick into the net.And the champions completed the turnaround just before the break as Godin met Gabi's corner with a bullet header, giving Alvarez no chance.

Celta started the second half in lively fashion, and almost drew level early on as Fabian Orellana played Hugo Mallo into the area only for the right-back to fire straight at Moya. They did restore parity in the 53rd minute, though.Planas produced a delightful turn in the area to beat Miranda and the Brazilian clumsily tripped the former Barcelona defender, with Nolito - a half-time substitute - duly converting the resulting penalty.

Simeone's team should have stolen all three points in the 78th minute as Raul Jimenez, starting in place of the injured Mario Mandzukic, pounced on a loose ball before firing straight at Alvarez from eight yards.

Cerci made his Liga bow off the bench and almost enjoyed a dream domestic debut when he fired beyond Alvarez from close range in injury time, only to be denied by the assistant referee as Atletico were left frustrated.

Inzaghi: I'm not angry with Juventus defeat

    458689_heroa.jpg

AC Milan coach Pippo Inzaghi insisted that he was not "angry" or disappointed after Sunday's 1-0 loss to Juventus.

Carlos Tevez scored the only goal of the game in the Serie A showdown at San Siro, slotting home in the 71st minute after being put through by a sublime pass from Paul Pogba.Juve were full value for their victory but Inzaghi insisted that he was not deflated after his side's first defeat of the season.

"I'm not angry," the former Milan striker told Sky Sport Italia. "I've only seen positive things."We did our best against an extraordinary team. We could also have taken the lead through [Keisuke] Honda's header in the first half.

"But Juve did not steal anything. We should be proud of our performance. The game was decided by a goal created by two champions."We are disappointed that we were not at the level of Juventus, but it was perhaps too much to expect because last season we only had around 50 points.

"I want to be realistic. I thought that beating Juven tonight would have been a miracle. They were good, credit to them."But this game will not affect our belief in ourselves. With this desire and this way of doing things, slowly but surely we will go far.

"We knew that we could not be perfect after three games. On Tuesday, we play Empoli and we will try get back on top."Then, in December, we'll see where we are. We're going to try to grow in order to reach the same level of Juve and Roma."

Inzaghi also insisted that he was not bitter about having lost to a side coached by former Milan boss Massmiliano Allegri, whom he served under during his playing days.

"It was all sorted. There were misunderstandings in the past. Now, he's at Juve, and I'm doing the job of my dreams."

    Simeone: Griezmann withdrawal tactical

    439341_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone says he was right to substitute Antoine Griezmann as the reigning Spanish champions slumped to a 2-2 draw at home to Celta Vigo on Saturday.

The French winger was withdrawn and replaced by Raul Garcia with a little over twenty minutes remaining at the Vicente Calderon with the hosts desperately chasing a winner. And Simeone insists the change was the correct decision as his side required a greater aerial threat.

"We thought we would have a lot of balls in the air and we wanted to put more people in there to deal with that," he said.

"The game was not defined by that and I thought that was the best chance of winning, it wasn’t a gamble."The Argentine coach also defended his side’s overall performance as they looked to bounce back from midweek Champions League defeat to Olympiakos."I liked how the team played today," he said.

"Of all the games we have played lately it was my favourite. I liked it the best. It was not easy because Celta are a brave team but we tried to create scoring chances and I think we did."

Atleti sit second with eight points from four games in La Liga ahead of Sunday’s matches and continue their campaign on Wednesday with a trip to Almeria.

:(:(Van Gaal on crushing Manchester United defeat: How is it possible?

    458938_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal believes Manchester United’s inability to keep possession was their “main mistake” in Sunday’s 5-3 defeat to Leicester City.

United twice led by two at the King Power Stadium but four second-half strikes from Nigel Pearson's side saw them roar back to claim a famous win after an eight-goal thriller.

The result leaves the Red Devils languishing in 13th in the Premier League having taken just five points from their first five matches and after the match Van Gaal admitted his team's collapse was unacceptable.

"We had complete control,” the Dutchman told reporters.

“How is it possible that you give this game away? Leicester has proved already in former games that they have strong character. But when it's 1-3 and you can play the game with more possession until the 90 minutes, then you cannot do these kind of things.

“It's always possible in football. I have [had] a long career so I have [had] this experience in Barcelona once already. You cannot imagine [it], but it happens.

"I don't want to criticise personal errors because that happens in a game. We didn't keep the ball in possession, that was our main mistake I believe. We created a lot of chances.

“We make fantastic goals. That's a plus, but we lost the game, that's the most important thing so you cannot be happy because of the first part."

Tottenham boss Pochettino rejects Europa League excuse

    458957_heroa.jpg

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has denied the suggestion that the exertions of Europa League football were a factor in their surprise 1-0 home defeat to West Brom.

The Argentine watched as his team laboured at White Hart Lane before James Morrison headed the Baggies in front, securing Alan Irvine's first Premier League win since taking over at the Midlands side.

And although Pochettino made 10 changes from the 0-0 draw with Partizan on Thursday, Tottenham looked slow and off-the-pace as they fell to a second consecutive home defeat.

Pochettino said: "It’s [Europa League] not the excuse, we change [sic] 10 players from Thursday but this is not an excuse, we’re in good condition to play and to have a good performance.

"Sometimes in football we are in the wrong condition to play and make more mistakes. My feeling now; we are uncomfortable on the pitch. The players seemed uncomfortable."

West Brom had a number of chances via Craig Dawson, Saido Berahino and Craig Gardner, who all took advantage of some ponderous defending from the hosts.

And Pochettino lamented his side's poor start, adding: "The beginning of the game was wrong, [we] moved the ball slow[ly], [at a] slow tempo. In football we need to play quick[ly].

"West Brom played deeper, we played slowly from the beginning.

"Angry? Yes. I’m very disappointed. [It was a] very bad day... The team showed nervousness in the game. The draw is fair when you analyse the game but in the end we make [sic] a mistake and lose.

"We need to show more because in the Premier League every game is difficult. West Brom arrived at White Hart Lane with only two points and bottom but we need to show more.

"We were wrong in our way [of playing, were] very slow from the back, [showed a] lack of movement. We were wrong. You need to show you’re the best team, you have to play with risk."

Tottenham host Nottingham Forest on Wednesday in the League Cup before heading to the Emirates for the first north London derby of the season on Sunday.

“I’m just doing my job” – Lampard reacts to scoring AGAINST Chelsea

    459003_heroa.jpg

Frank Lampard admits he was “lost for words” after his first goal for Manchester City rescued a 1-1 draw against Chelsea.

After nearly 13 years at Stamford Bridge, Lampard left the club earlier this summer and agreed a deal with New York City FC but joined Manchester City on loan until January.

City, who were reduced to 10 men after Pablo Zabaleta's dismissal, fell behind following Andre Schurrle's second-half strike but Lampard, on as a substitute, netted with five minutes remaining to salvage a point for the Premier League champions.

"It’s a really difficult one,” Lampard told Sky Sports.

“I’d be unprofessional if I didn’t come on and do my job. I tried to get back in the box, it was a great ball from Milly [James Milner]. I had 13 amazing years with Chelsea fans. So I’m mixed [sic] with it. Obviously, I’m really pleased the team I play for got a draw, so it a really hard one for me to answer.

“I’m a bit lost for words. I didn’t expect to come on and score like that. I come on and the Chelsea fans are signing and that’s emotional, then I’m playing for this club who have taken me in brilliantly as well. So I’m really stuck in the middle here.”

“I didn’t know what I wanted from today, it was a tough one. I suppose this can be seen as a happy medium at the end. It’s a long season, and these two teams, plus others will fight on, it’ll make for an interesting Premier League.”
