Manchester United youngsters McNair and Thorpe in squad for West Ham clash

    448547_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed that he has called Under-21s defenders Paddy McNair and Tom Thorpe into his squad for Saturday's clash with West Ham.

The Red Devils are short on numbers in central defence as Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans are all injured while Tyler Blackett is suspended following his red card against Leicester City.

Van Gaal has therefore turned to his youngsters as he seeks to bounce back from their 5-3 defeat at the King Power Stadium.

"They are in the squad. That is always why we have a youth education," he told MUTV of the pair.

"It was also our policy [to utilise the youth squads] and always the policy of the club too.

"The amount of injuries is worrying me and they are not coming back.

"Smalling is already, for the third time, injured. Evans also. Jones had one injury in the national team, which was unfortunate."

The Dutchman also ruled out the possibility of the versatile Daley Blind dropping into defence against Sam Allardyce's side.

"I don't like having too many left-sided defenders or left-footed players in defence," he remarked.

"I think always of balance so [instead] I have to pick up a right-sided central defender from the youth education.

"Normally, I am always doing things like that. I have already said that we have a lot of vacancies when you buy only six players and let 14 players go."

Guti hits out at Real Madrid boo-boys

    456865_heroa.jpg

Former Real Madrid midfielder Guti says he hates to hear the likes of Iker Casillas being booed and whistled by home supporters.

Casillas was the subject of criticism from some sections of the crowd during the side's recent derby defeat to Atletico Madrid, while Karim Benzema has also been a target at times due to his inconsistent scoring record. And Guti, who was himself targeted by boos at points whilst playing for the club, has urged fans to encourage the current side.

"I do not like that at home, at the [Santiago] Bernabeu... one of the players is whistled," the 37-year-old told reporters."It does not matter whether it is Casillas, Benzema or whoever.

"At one point it was the coach. In that sense I think we should change, [we should] encourage the team."The retired former midfielder also talked about the Blancos' current squad, including the new arrivals from the summer transfer window.

"Those who have come are great players," he continued, but added that they would "have to adapt to the system and what Real Madrid is."

Van Gaal vows to end Manchester United injury woes

    441923_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal has promised to solve the injury crisis that has threatened to derail Manchester United's campaign, saying that he will increase the intensity of his side's training to get them up to peak fitness.

The Dutchman is currently without a host of first-team players and is especially short at the back, with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans all unavailable for Saturday's clash with West Ham. Youngsters Paddy McNair and Tom Thorpe have both been drafted into the matchday squad to cover the numerous absentees.

But Van Gaal is confident that he can find a solution to the injuries that have plagued his side, citing the methods that helped cure the fitness problems that had blighted Arjen Robben's career before he linked up with his compatriot at Bayern Munich.

When asked by reporters if he was aware of the chequered injury history of his defensive casualties, Van Gaal replied: "I have been told [about this] and now they are confirming [it] but I have good hopes that we shall improve in that matter because normally I don't have any injuries.

"As a good example, for a player who was many times injured – Robben – he was never injured [during my reign at Bayern]."

Probed further about how he intended to solve the crisis, he continued: "By training. By training sessions and adapting to their level.

"It was not only Robben but every player and we are doing that here in the same way, only less than I have done with Bayern Munich. We have to improve the level and intensity so players can play the game."

Van Gaal is also convinced that his methods will work on Smalling, Jones and Evans, despite their injury struggles throughout their time at Old Trafford. "Yes, of course," insisted the Dutchman. "I'm 25 years in this profession and you learn every year but you gain a philosophy in all the years and apply that."

United's transfer priorities have been called into question given that the Under-21s have been plundered to provide cover, though Van Gaal hinted that the club had pushed to sign another centre-back in the summer - though they would not sign just anyone.

"Maybe we were in the market already in August for a right central defender," he added. "You never know but I don't want to discuss that with you.

"My concern is never the age or the experience. My concern is the profile. You have to fit the profile. I don't want to buy players who are not fitting the profile.

"I played with the Dutch national team, for instance with Bruno Martins Indi and Stefan de Vrij who were 22. They had never played in the Premier League or never played abroad. Now they are both abroad because of the World Cup [both left Feyenoord after Brazil with Martins Indi moving to Porto and De Vrij joining Lazio].

"I also played with Ron Vlaar of Aston Villa. That was my defence and we did it very well in the world championship."

Nasri could be out for a month, says Manchester City boss Pellegrini

    461270_heroa.jpg

Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri could be out for a month after Manuel Pellegrini revealed the Frenchman may require surgery.

Nasri had already been ruled out of Saturday's Premier League trip to Hull City with a groin injury, but could now face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

"Samir Nasri is serious because maybe he will have surgery in the next days," Pellegrini told reporters. "I think he will be out for, I'm not a doctor, but around one month.

"He was training but he was not 100 per cent. He did not feel comfortable so the doctor decided that was the best option.

"Of course he's a very important player for us. It's not easy for us not to play with Samir but once again I never give excuses about players that are not, for different reasons, in our squad."

Nasri has made six appearances in all competitions for City this season and is joined by Fernando (groin) and Stevan Jovetic (hamstring) in missing out on Saturday's match through injury.

Pellegrini's men will be looking for their first win in four Premier League matches on Saturday.

    Monaco expected FFP investigation

    458998_heroa.jpg

Monaco have revealed that they had anticipated Uefa's decision to launch an investigation into alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations at the Stade Louis II.

The European game's governing body announced on Thursday that the Rouges et Blancs were one of seven clubs under scrutiny for allegedly losing more than €45 million between 2011 and 2014.However, Monaco, who significantly reduced their outlay on players this summer, are not in the least bit perturbed by the enquiry into their expenditure.

"Following the announcement on Thursday of a UEFA investigation into Financial Fair Play (FFP), which includes the AS Monaco among those with a deficit above the allowed threshold, the club wishes to clarify that this announcement is normal and that it had anticipated this measure," read a statement on the Ligue 1 side's official website.

"This once again justifies changing the club's investment strategy to respond positively to the standards required by FFP."AS Monaco will deliver additional information to support compliance with the rules set up by the European body."

Monaco spent heavily on players last year, bringing in the likes of Radamel Falcao and James Rodrigue, but both players have since departed as the club sought to reduce their spending, with the former joining Manchester United on loan and the latter moving to Real Madrid.

Monaco's Ligue 1 rivals Paris Saint-Germain were hit with a heavy fine and an enforced reduction in the size of their 2014-15 Champions League squad as a result of previous breach of the FFP guidelines.

Tiago: Atletico not a violent team

    455596_heroa.jpg

Tiago insists that Atletico Madrid are not a "violent" team - despite their poor disciplinary record this season.

The reigning Spanish champions have accrued 19 yellow cards in just five Primera Division games but the midfielder believes the Rojiblancos have been harshly treated by referees.

“I think it’s a bit over the top the number of cards we have received," Tiago told reporters on Friday. "I don’t know if it’s because we are spoken of as a violent team."I felt [in the 1-0 win over Almería on Wednesday] that the referee pulled out the cards a little easily.

"I genuinely don’t think we are a violent team or that we commit a large number of fouls."Atletico's performances have also been the subject of much debate, with particular emphasis being placed upon their struggles in front of goal.

Indeed, six of Atletico's seven Liga goals have come from set-pieces - but Tiago feels that it is a misleading statistic.“We definitely played to a very high level last season and everybody is expecting us to do something this year as well, and none more so than ourselves," the former Chelsea man mused.

"There were important players who have left and others that have come in. We are still growing."We work a lot on set-pieces and at this stage of the season it is paying off. We are gaining a lot of points because of it.

“The statistics say that we [rely on set-pieces], but the team creates a lot of chances, too."

Galliani: I knew Honda would come good

    450939_heroa.jpg

AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani insists that he always knew that Keisuke Honda would come good at San Siro. The Japan international joined the Rossoneri on a free transfer from CSKA Moscow in January and initially struggled to settle at the Giuseppe Meazza.

However, Honda has started the 2014-15 season in fine form, scoring three goals in four Serie A appearances - much to the delight of Galliani.

"I have always considered Keisuke very strong," the Milan vice-president told the Gazzetta dello Sport. "The information that [former Japan boss Alberto] Zaccheroni gave us was really correct.

"He's an important player who dreamt of Milan and one who Milan had tried to bring here also six months before he arrived."He's a player of great class. The secret of his rebirth? The holidays.

"Six months ago, Keisuke arrived during a very busy period. He never had a chance to take a break. Russia, Milan and Japan - and all without ever taking a breath.

"This time, although he didn't have much time off after the World Cup, Honda was granted some days of relaxation, and now you're seeing the results.
"I always thought that he would score a lot."

Klopp: Derby a chance to score 'Brownie Points'

    456880_heroa.jpg

Jurgen Klopp is viewing Saturday's derby with Schalke as a chance for his stuttering Borussia Dortmund side to rack up some "Brownie Points" with their dissatisfied supporters.BVB have lost two of their first five games in this season's Bundesliga and currently sit eighth in the standings, four points behind leaders and reigning champions Bayern Munich.

Defeat at Schalke is therefore not an option for Dortmund, but Klopp acknowledges that the Signal Iduna Park outfit will have to defend much better than they have been of late if they are to get anything out of the game at the Veltins-Arena.However, the 47-year-old is viewing the derby as a chance for his players to get their fans back onside.

"We have made five serious mistakes in the past two games, four of them were punished with the concession of a goal," Klopp mused in his pre-derby press conference."But we can only talk about the mistakes because we hardly have time to train at the moment."We both have tough schedules - yet both will give everything. Both teams have injury problems, but both will get 11 men on the field.

"These games stand out from the rest of the season. As well as the three points, the derby is always an opportunity to get what [BVB defender] Neven Subotic has called 'Brownie Points'.

"The derby is the most extraordinary game of Bundesliga season."Schalke's eagerly-awaited clash with Dortmund is scheduled to kick off at 14:30CET.

Simeone: Mandzukic might start against Sevilla

    455684_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has revealed that Mario Mandzukic could start Saturday's Liga clash with Sevilla. The Croatia international is still recovering from surgery on the broken nose he sustained in the Champions League loss to Olympiakos on September 16.

However, Simeone hinted that Mandzukic will definitely play some part in the eagerly-awaited clash with in-form Sevilla at the Vicente Calderon."We’ll see," the Argentine told reporters at his pre-game press conference on Friday. "We’ll have a final training session to see if we can use him from the start or not."But yesterday [Thursday] he trained extremely well."

Simeone certainly feels that Atletico will definitely need Mandzukic as he has the utmost respect for Unai Emery's Sevilla side, who have won four on the bounce in the Primera Division.

"Emery has done a great job, as he tends to do after time at a club," the Rojiblancos boss acknowledged. "It should be a good and entertaining game with two teams sharing a great deal of similarities."On dead-ball situations, we’re both very good.

"With Emery in charge, Sevilla have become a more competitive side with aggression, speed and a great forward in [striker Carlos] Bacca, who could be the lynch-pin of the team."But Sevilla have great balance in all areas. This ability to alternate different positions offers the side to be able to compete and keep the players happy at the same time."

Atletico currently sit fourth in the Primera Division, one place and two points behind Sevilla.

    Higuain: I'm happy at Napoli

    457912_heroa.jpg

Gonzalo Higuain insists that he feels "right at home" at Napoli - despite constant speculation linking the striker with a move away from the San Paolo.

The Argentina international only joined the Partenopei from Real Madrid last summer and enjoyed a stellar debut season in Italy, scoring 24 goals in all competitions as Rafael Benitez's side finished third in Serie A and lifted the Coppa Italia.

There have been reports, though, that Higuain has been left bitterly disappointed by the lack of new arrivals over the summer, something he allegedly feels directly contributed to the dismal Champions League play-off loss to Athletic Bilbao.

Consequently, there has been talk of a January move to the Premier League, with Arsenal and Liverpool both said to be interested, but Higuain says he has no desire to leave Naples.

"The city has everything," he told reporters at the launch of the EA Sports computer game, FIFA 15."It is very similar to Buenos Aires and an Argentine feels right at home there."Also, you can just take a boat and you are very close to beautiful places like Capri, Sorrento and Ischia."

Higuain did admit, however, that he is still looking for someone to settle with in Italy."I have not yet found the love of my life," the 26-year-old confessed. "I'm still looking for here.

"You must be friends and boyfriend and girlfriend at the same time."

Koln 0-2 Bayern Munich: Halfar hands champions victory

    460447_heroa.jpg

Daniel Halfar endured a game to forget as Bayern Munich brushed aside Koln 2-0 in the Bundesliga on Saturday.A first-half mistake allowed Thomas Muller in to find Mario Gotze at the far post and he tapped home for his third goal in two games.

David Alaba had a big hand in the second, forcing Halfar to turn the ball into his own net under pressure in the 66th minute, compounding a difficult match for the midfielder.

Manuel Neuer made a superb double-save before half time, but was largely untested by a much-changed Koln side, who are still yet to find the net at home this season. The result leaves Pep Guardiola's men top of the Bundesliga, having extend their unbeaten start to the season to six games.

The return of Arjen Robben coincided with a 4-0 win for the champions over Paderborn on Tuesday, and the Dutchman was lively again during the opening exchanges at the RheinEnergieStadion.

A jinking run into the area saw the winger brought down by Halfar inside five minutes, only for referee Knut Kircher to wave away any penalty appeals.

Muller fired wide two minutes later as the visitors, who came into this game having only won once in their last three trips to the Rhine club, sought an early advantage.
And Koln's defence, which conceded their first goal of the season at Hannover in midweek, was eventually undone after 19 minutes.

Halfar's error allowed Robben to play in Muller, whose drilled ball across the goal eventually found Gotze at the far post, enabling Germany's World Cup hero to tap home with a simple finish.

Muller nearly added a second four minutes later, forcing a great save from Timo Horn following Robert Lewandowski's lay-off, before Robben tested the keeper again with curling effort in the 33rd minute.

The visitors' inability to find a second was nearly punished 10 minutes before the break, with Neuer on hand to deny Adam Matuszczyk and Anthony Ujah in quick succession.

Jonas Hector fired wide seven minutes later, but Bayern continued to look the better side, despite seeming content to spend most of the second half simply keeping possession.Having allowed Bayern to take the lead through his first-half error, Halfer's misery was complete when he turned the ball into his own net.

Some good work from Robben allowed Lewandowski to break free in the box, setting up Alaba, who was then tackled by Halfar , before the ball trickled into the net.

Substitute Xabi Alonso almost capped off the triumph 19 minutes from time, but the Spaniard was denied his first goal for the club as his 30-yard effort was saved by Horn.

Schalke 2-1 Borussia Dortmund: BVB slump to derby defeat

    461350_heroa.jpg

Schalke claimed the Revierderby bragging rights by capitalising on suspect Borussia Dortmund defending to secure a 2-1 home win on Saturday.

First-half goals from Joel Matip and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting at the Veltins Arena sent Jurgen Klopp's men crashing to a third defeat from the opening six games of the new Bundesliga season.

The manner in which Matip and Choupo-Moting were allowed to put Schalke two goals to the good inside 23 minutes will give Klopp plenty to ponder, although the Dortmund coach can take some solace from his players' response to a sluggish start.Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made it 2-1 midway through the first half and Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann was required to make several fine saves to keep last season's runners-up at bay. But Dortmund could not find a way past Fahrmann and were left frustrated by another costly domestic defeat.

Defender Mats Hummels made his first start of the season for BVB after proving his fitness following muscular problems, while Shinji Kagawa dropped to the bench.

Given the rivalry that exists between the two clubs, a feisty opening appeared inevitable and a clash of heads between Choupo-Moting and Lukasz Piszczek inside the opening 30 seconds resulted in the latter requiring treatment off the pitch.
Aubameyang tested Schalke goalkeeper Fahrmann from 25 yards before Dortmund were left to rue some poor defending at the other end as the home side broke the deadlock after 10 minutes.

Matip - who was back at the centre of the Schalke defence - slipped away from two markers to meet Dennis Aogo's corner on the six-yard box with a powerful header that gave Roman Weidenfeller no chance.Ciro Immobile fired wide after beating the offside trap and cutting in from the right wing as Dortmund attempted to get a foothold in the game.

But their task became more difficult when Choupo-Moting capitalised on more hesitant defending to make it 2-0 after 23 minutes.Weidenfeller showed great reactions to palm away Matip's header from Aogo's cross before Adrian Ramos' attempted clearance eventually fell kindly for Choupo-Moting. He made no mistake with a low drive from 10 yards.

The Cameroon international striker's third Bundlesliga goal of the season prompted an almost instant response from the visitors as Dortmund pulled one back four minutes before the half-hour mark.Ramos surged down the right flank and pulled a pass back that the advancing Aubameyang diverted across Fahrmann from just inside the penalty area.

Only a fine fingertip save from Fahrmann denied Dortmund an equaliser four minutes into the second half. Immobile pivoted and shot from 20 yards, but Fahrmann was down quickly to his right to palm the low drive wide when at full stretch.Kevin-Prince Boateng spurned a decent chance to make it 3-1 by dragging a shot wide before Schalke were again indebted to another Fahrmann save, this time to turn Aubameyang's free-kick behind.

Dortmund saw claims for a penalty turned down with 23 minutes left when Matip and Ramos came together on the edge of the penalty area, but referee Peter Gagelmann waved play on.Substitute Milos Jojic headed wide after 79 minutes as the visitors continued to press forward before Klaas-Jan Huntelaar came agonisingly close to adding a third for Schalke in stoppage time.

Huntelaar latched on to a lofted ball downfield and turned past Neven Subotic, but his shot struck Weidenfeller's legs and trickled agonisingly wide.
Victory for Schalke sees them leapfrog Dortmund in the Bundesliga table.

Villarreal 0-2 Real Madrid: Modric & Ronaldo sink Yellow Submarine

    461506_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo continued his fine run of goalscoring form as Real Madrid claimed a spirited 2-0 win at Villarreal on Saturday.

The Portugal international went into the fixture having scored nine goals in just four La Liga matches this season and unsurprisingly took his tally to 10 as Los Blancos were made to fight at El Madrigal.Villarreal looked the better side for significant periods of the game and made Iker Casillas work on a number of occasions in the first half.A 'come home Ronaldo' banner, commissioned by a group of Manchester United fans, flew over the ground as the Ballon d'Or winner endured a quiet start to the game.

However, Luka Modric put Madrid ahead with a stylish finish just after the half-hour mark and Ronaldo finally came to life in the lead up to half time, slotting home from Karim Benzema's pinpoint pass in the 40th minute.

Villarreal continued to look extremely lively going forward in the second period, but proceeded to waste more chances and Carlo Ancelotti's side were able to earn a hard-fought victory.

Coach Marcelino Garcia Toral was adamant that Villarreal would be highly motivated against Real and they looked particularly fired up during the early stages, giving their visitors a tough start.Casillas was first called into action after just seven minutes as he palmed an Ikechukwu Uche effort around the post, and Luciano Vietto shot into the side-netting soon after.

Attention turned to the sky in the 16th minute as the 'come home Ronaldo' banner was flown over the ground.

It failed to spark an immediate reaction from the Portugal star, though, with Uche and Mario both going close for the hosts, who remained the more threatening.
Despite Villarreal's apparent superiority, Real opened up a 2-0 lead before the break.

Modric fired in a fine drive from 20 yards with 32 minutes on the clock and the second arrived soon after as Ronaldo confidently buried Benzema's well-placed cut-back.

Villarreal ensured a tense end to the first half for Madrid, though, as Casillas denied Vietto from point-blank range and Marcelo produced an incredible last-ditch block to keep Manu Trigueros' effort out.

Luckily for Ancelotti's men, the hosts were no less wasteful early in the second half.Gabriel Paulista fired well over in the 48th minute after finding himself behind the Madrid defence.

The presence of 20-year-old Vietto proved troubling for Los Blancos and he almost slid in to pull one back for Villarreal in the 58th minute, but the Argentine could not quite reach Moi Gomez's teasing cross.Marcelino could have no complaints about his team's persistent effort, as Jonathan Dos Santos tested Casillas with an audacious half-volley from 30 yards.

However, Madrid – who threatened exclusively on the counter late on – held on for a battling triumph, aiding their bid to play catch-up on those tussling at the summit of the table.

Hull City 2-4 Manchester City: Lampard strikes again as Pellegrini's men survive scare

    461492_heroa.jpg

Frank Lampard scored his fourth goal in three games as Manchester City secured a 4-2 win over Hull City at the KC Stadium.

Manuel Pellegrini's side raced into a two-goal lead in the early stages of the game as Sergio Aguero struck before Edin Dzeko bagged his first of the afternoon.

But Eliaquim Mangala's own goal gifted Hull a lifeline and Steve Bruce's side were level before the interval, after the France centre-back brought down Abel Hernandez in the box for the Uruguayan striker to equalise from the penalty spot.

Dzeko grabbed his second in the 68th minute, and Lampard wrapped up the win late on to continue a prolific run of form.

Manuel Pellegrini made good on his midweek pledge to give Willy Caballero two games in row as the goalkeeper kept his place ahead of Joe Hart following Wednesday's League Cup triumph.

Pablo Zabaleta returned at right-back after a red card against Chelsea, while Gael Clichy replaced Aleksandar Kolarov.

Liam Rosenior came in for Stephen Quinn in the only change from Hull's last league outing at Newcastle, allowing Ahmed Elmohamady to revert to his favoured right-wing position.

Aguero sped past Hull centre-back Michael Dawson inside 40 seconds to unleash a fierce shot that was beaten away by Allan McGregor at his near post.

Hull should have led in the sixth minute as Nikica Jelavic, played onside by Zabaleta and with plenty of room inside the penalty area, failed to make contact with Jake Livermore's measured cross.

Hull were made to pay almost immediately. James Milner's right-wing cross was only partially cleared and Zabaleta was alert to nod towards Aguero, who rifled home on the turn.

And it was soon 2-0, as Dzeko ghosted past Rosenior and curled a sumptuous 20-yard strike into the top corner.

Pellegrini's side appeared in rampant mood, but Hull had a lifeline in the 21st minute when Rosenior raced around the outside of Clichy and a poorly positioned Mangala headed the full-back's delivery beyond Caballero.

Dawson continued to endure a testing afternoon at Aguero's expense, the Argentina striker darting beyond his man once more to shoot narrowly wide.

But Hull were now in the ascendancy and Mangala had another moment to forget as he plunged a boot into Hernandez in the area, allowing the Uruguay striker to pick himself up and convert the resulting penalty after 32 minutes.

Hernandez and Dzeko both missed headers as a pulsating half reached its conclusion, with the visitors unquestionably happier to hear the whistle.

Caballero saved unconvincingly from Tom Huddlestone's early second half drive before Mangala recovered his poise to deny Nikica Jelavic with a vital challenge.

Yaya Toure produced a nondescript opening period, but came to life to send a scorching 30-yard strike smashing into the post after 50 minutes.

Pellegrini replaced Fernandinho with Jesus Navas in the 66th minutes, allowing David Silva to operate in an advanced central position, and it was a move which paid dividends three minutes later when the playmaker found Dzeko, who slotted a left-footed finish past McGregor's despairing dive.

Caballero repaid his manager's faith with a sharp 86th-minute stop from Jelavic.

And a minute later, Lampard continued a familiar purple patch in front of goal to make it 4-2 after fine work from Zabaleta, leaving Hull still without a Premier League win since the opening day.
