Messi better than Cristiano Ronaldo, insists Suarez

    457990_heroa.jpg

Barcelona attacker Luis Suarez has stressed that his Argentine team-mate Lionel Messi is a better player than Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi and Ronaldo have won six Ballons d'Or between them in the past six years - the former emerging victorious four times and the latter twice - and are widely regarded as the two best players around in the game at the moment.

The Portugal star has already netted 15 goals in seven La Liga appearances this term against the Barca man's seven strikes, yet Suarez believes it's the Argentine who is the better of the two irrespective of their record in 2014-15."In my opinion Leo is better [than Ronaldo]," Suarez was quoted as saying by Mirror.

"I train and play with Leo every day and he surprises me every day. He is unique.
"Everybody knows what he has brought to Barcelona, what kind of world-class player he is. “For me he is the best player in the world for what he has already done, and he’s still so young."

Messi and Ronaldo are set to lock horns on Saturday when Madrid host Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Clasico could be Suarez's first official game in the Barca jersey after serving his four-month ban for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup.

The Uruguayan previously featured in the friendly win over Leon for the Joan Gamper Trophy and the Barcelona B win over Indonesia Under-19, while also gaining some match rhythm wearing the Uruguay jersey earlier this month.

Neymar: Beating Ajax as important as El Clasico

    461628_heroa.jpg

Barcelona star Neymar insists his side consider beating Ajax to be as important as defeating Real Madrid this week.

The Brazil international has been in sublime form so far this season, scoring nine goals in as many appearances in all competitions, and he is keen to add to his personal tally in Tuesday's Champions League game versus the Eredivisie champions before El Clasico on Saturday.

"Tuesday we have a match we have to win, and only after that we will start thinking about El Clasico. What is more important for me - scoring tomorrow or scoring at the Santiago Bernabeu? Both," Neymar said at a press conference."It will be a very difficult and a very important match against Ajax. We always play to win but I believe Ajax to be a great team both in defense and in attack. We will have to work hard to win."

Neymar added he is still relishing playing alongside Lionel Messi, but is equally excited at the prospect of lining up next to Luis Suarez, who could return to action in Madrid.

"For me Messi is the best player in the world, and I am happy to play with him.But Luis Suarez is there among the best too and I am sure he will bring many good things to our team."

Galatasaray fined €50,000 for Emirates Stadium damage

    487001_heroa.jpg

Galatasaray have been fined €50,000 by Uefa following the crowd disturbances during their Champions League defeat to Arsenal.

The Turkish club were beaten 4-1 at Emirates Stadium on October 1 in a fixture that was interrupted by flares being thrown onto the pitch.

Seats in the away section of the ground were also pulled out and broken by Galatasaray fans, with the club having been ordered to contact Arsenal within 30 days in order to settle the cost of the damage.

Arsenal were charged with insufficient organisation as a result of a lack of body searches but will not be punished after Uefa opted to close the disciplinary proceedings against the club.

European football's governing body issued fines to a number of other teams on Monday.

Basel will be required to pay €40,000 as a result of the "throwing of objects" that occurred in their 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the Champions League on October 1.

Feyenoord and Standard Liege, meanwhile, have been fined €15,000 and €17,000 respectively after incidents in their Europa League match the following day.

Both teams have been punished for the setting off of fireworks, while Feyenoord were also found guilty of insufficient organisation and Liege of a crowd disturbance.

The Andorran Football Federation has been ordered to pay €10,000, having been found guilty of insufficient organisation for their match against Wales, whose FA have received a €5,000 fine following a pitch invasion by their supporters.

Starke injury adds to Bayern's goalkeeper crisis

    486561_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich's goalkeeping options have been further depleted after Tom Starke sustained an ankle injury. The 33-year-old picked up the problem in training on Sunday and subsequently underwent surgery the following day.

The Bundesliga champions have since confirmed he faces an indeterminate spell out of action as he begins a rehabilitation process this week.Starke joins fellow goalkeeper Pepe Reina on the sidelines after the close-season signing injured his calf earlier this month.

Spain international Reina, who joined from Liverpool in August, was hurt when he featured in Bayern's friendly with a Paulaner dream team of amateur footballers in Unterhaching. It means Bayern are now short of experienced cover for regular No.1 and Germany international Manuel Neuer.

Bayern reserve-team shot-stopper Leopold Zingerie has now been called into the first-team squad for the club's trip to Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Yaya Toure is improving with every game - Pellegrini

    464941_heroa.jpg

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini says Yaya Toure has endured a difficult summer but insists the midfielder is improving with every game.

Toure has so far failed to replicate the form which saw him score 24 goals from midfield in all competitions last season after a summer in which he lost his brother Ibrahim to cancer.

But the Cote d'Ivoire international scored the opening goal in City's 2-0 win over Aston Villa earlier this month and Pellegrini believes his star man is slowly returning to his best form.

"Yaya has the quality to make a difference. He had a difficult summer but every game he is getting better," he told reporters.

City will take on CSKA Moscow on Tuesday in a closed Arena Khimki due to the Russian Premier League leaders' three-match stadium ban in European competition, caused by repeated racially-aggravated behaviour from some supporters.

CSKA star Ahmed Musa described the ban earlier this week as "unfair", and Pellegrini admits the situation is far from ideal.

"It is a pity we cant play for fans, as this competition is for the fans," he added. "But we dont have any other option."

'Angry' El Shaarawy: I could have played better

    486501_heroa.jpg

Stephan El Shaarawy admits he was "angry" with his own performance in AC Milan 's 3-1 Serie A victory at Verona on Sunday.

The Italy international provided the assist for Keisuke Honda, who scored twice in the win, to make it 2-0 at the Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi. However, El Shaarawy felt he could have done more throughout the match and the forward, who started for just the third time in Serie A this season, concedes he left the field fuming with his display when he was replaced by Giacomo Bonaventura in the 77th minute.

"I did what the coach asked of me: when [Michael] Essien pressed, I had to go close to Sulley [Muntari]," El Shaarawy, who turns 22 later this month, told the club's official website. "I could have done better. I went off angry because I could have done better, but the important thing is the three points.

"When you don't play, it's normal that you get angry, everybody would like to play. [But] the important thing was the win."Despite his personal disappointment, El Shaarawy stated that he has a terrific rapport with head coach Filippo Inzaghi.

"Inzaghi and I have an excellent relationship," he added. "He has faith in me and I try to repay that every day and when I am called upon."

'Exciting' Di Maria the pick of Manchester United's signings - Giggs

    467112_heroa.jpg

Ryan Giggs has singled out Angel Di Maria as the most exciting of Manchester United's summer signings and insists the club are well placed to mount a top-four challenge this season.

United spent over €170 million recruiting Di Maria, Radamel Falcao, Ander Herrera, Daley Blind, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo as a signal of their intention to make an immediate return to the Champions League.

And while he admits that the Red Devils' attacking power makes him nostalgic about his own playing career, Giggs believes Di Maria is the star attraction of Louis van Gaal's developing team.

"It would have been nice to play on the wing when you look over and you've got [Robin] Van Persie, Falcao and [Wayne] Rooney in the middle," Giggs told the Premier League's official website.

    487251_heroa.jpg

"Di Maria especially excites you. He's the kind of player you would go and pay good money to go and watch because he gets from box to box so quickly, dribbles, makes goals, scores goals and works hard as well."

United have recovered from a torrid start to the season to battle their way to sixth in the Premier League after eight matches, and Giggs is confident they are in a good position to secure their primary aim of a top-four finish.

"We have got big games coming up: Chelsea, [Manchester] City, Arsenal," he added. "We'll need to be in good form because Chelsea have been the stand-out team along with City. But we feel that we are coming along nicely. The new signings have bedded in well and hitting good form."

Giggs remained at Old Trafford to take up a role as Van Gaal's assistant this summer after managing United on a caretaker basis for the final weeks of last season, and insists the decorated Dutchman is the perfect managerial mentor.

"It is a challenge," the Welshman continued. "There's a lot more preparation during the week, and making sure that you cover everything and do everything you can for the players to be prepared for the game coming up at the weekend.

"I'm learning every day but I'm learning under a great manager so I am enjoying it."

:love:West Brom 2-2 Manchester United: Late Blind strike rescues point

    488061_heroa.jpg

Daley Blind's first-ever goal for Manchester United saw the Red Devils secure a dramatic 2-2 draw away to West Brom at the Hawthorns on Monday night, though Louis van Gaal's side remain winless on their travels in their last six games.

Stephane Sessegnon opened the scoring for the hosts early on, with Liverpool loanee Andre Wisdom racing down the flank and squaring for the Benin international, who fired a ferocious first-time shot past David De Gea and into the top corner.

At half-time Van Gaal introduced Marouane Fellaini in place of Ander Herrera and within minutes the much-maligned Belgian had equalised, chesting down a floated pass from Angel Di Maria - who later came off injured - before unleashing an unstoppable effort that flew past Boaz Myhill.

United's joy was short-lived, though, and the Baggies reclaimed the lead soon after via a bright counterattack, with Saido Berahino racing onto Chris Brunt's through-ball and nervelessly placing his shot beyond De Gea and into the bottom corner.

Robin van Persie smashed a shot against the foot of the post as United sought a response and they finally found a breakthrough when Blind stroked a loose ball into the bottom corner late on, though Van Gaal's men were denied the chance to record three back-to-back league wins for the first time since December 2013.

Radamel Falcao was left on the bench by the former Netherlands coach, who handed starts to the fit-again Phil Jones and Herrera in addition to Adnan Januzaj.

West Brom started the brighter and Sessegnon opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a superb first-time finish.

The Benin international met Wisdom's low ball with a curling effort into David de Gea's top left-hand corner, following an excellent run down the right from the full-back, who was included in the West Brom starting XI in place of Cristian Gamboa.

Van Persie was then denied by Boaz Myhill - in for the injured Ben Foster - at the other end as United sought an immediate response.

Di Maria also tested Myhill on two occasions but United, despite dominating possession for much of the first half, appeared to lack a cutting edge in the final third.

Fellaini was brought on for Herrera after the half-time interval and made an almost immediate impact by controlling a cross from Di Maria with his chest, before swivelling and unleashing an unstoppable drive beyond Myhill and into the top-right corner.

United appeared more likely to grab a second goal thereafter, but were caught short at the back again as Berahino restored Albion's lead.

The England Under-21 international is behind only Manchester City's Sergio Aguero and Chelsea's Diego Costa in the Premier League goalscoring charts and displayed his quality once again, capping an excellent West Brom move with a confident strike into the bottom-right corner from Brunt's incisive pass.

Van Persie struck the post with a vicious half-volley from the edge of the area before Di Maria was withdrawn for Ashley Young due to an injury to his right thigh.

With United's most creative player on the sidelines, West Brom looked set to hold on.

However, there was to be a late final twist as Blind picked the perfect time to open his account and salvage a point, although the nature of United's performance is unlikely to put an end to questions over the Old Trafford club's ability to sustain a title challenge.

Atletico cannot continue to rely on set-pieces, says Suarez

    485711_heroa.jpg

Mario Suarez has warned Atletico Madrid that they cannot continue to rely on set-piece strikes if they are to retain their Liga title.

The Spanish champions rebounded from the 3-1 defeat to Valencia before the international break by defeating Espanyol 2-0 at Vicente Calderon on Sunday, with Tiago and Suarez himself on target for Diego Simeone's side.

However, both players netted from corners, meaning 10 of the 14 goals that Atletico have scored in La Liga this term have come via set-pieces.Suarez freely admits that Atletico are proud that the work they do on the training ground is reaping benefits but concedes that the Rojiblancos are in very real danger of becoming reliant on dead-ball deliveries.

"The set-pieces are good and we work hard on them," the midfielder told reporters."They bear fruit but we have to score from open play as our opponents will get to know what we're doing."

However, Suarez says that the primary focus for now is on building on the win over Espanyol by beating Champions League rivals Malmo in midweek."We suffered in Valencia but the team has showed character," the Spaniard enthused. "We won at the weekend and now we are thinking about the Champions League. We have to keep going."

Atletico top Group A, but all four sides are locked together on three points going into matchday three.

Robben: Roma play the best football in Italy

    447686_heroa.jpg

Arjen Robben says Bayern Munich will be going up against the best footballing side in Italy when they face Roma in a crucial Champions League clash at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday night.

The Giallorossi currently sit second in Serie A, one point behind reigning champions Juventus, whom Rudi Garcia's men were beaten by a fortnight ago.
However, Roma were desperately unfortunate to lose in Turin and have also impressed in Europe, routing CSKA Moscow 5-1 on matchday one before earning a fully deserved draw at Manchester City last time out.

Consequently, Robben is expecting a fearsome battle when Bayern collide with the Giallorossi in the Italian capital.

"Roma are our toughest rivals at the moment," the Netherlands international told reporters on Monday. "They're playing the best football in Italy at the present time."

Bayern strengthened their squad with the signing of Mehdi Benatia during the off-season and Robben says that the Roma man has fitted perfectly into Pep Guardiola's side."He is a really good defender, exactly what we needed," the winger enthused. "He will help us a lot."

Meanwhile, Robben's team-mate Thomas Muller is excited by the prospect of going up against Roma icon Francesco Totti, who became the oldest goalscorer in Champions League history when he netted in the 1-1 draw at City, aged 38."Totti is not just a legend in Rome," the Germany international explained. "His loyalty to Roma is remarkable. I take my hat off to him for that.

"Nevertheless we want to win against him. We want to reach the knockout stage as fast as we can."And, as a forward, you relish playing a team who are unlikely to pull all 11 men back to their own penalty area!"

Roma sit second in Group E, one point behind Bayern, who are on a five-game winning streak in all competitions.

Van Gaal: West Brom draw our best game of the season

    487521_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal felt Manchester United produced their best performance of the season in Monday night's 2-2 draw with West Brom.

The Red Devils were twice forced to come from behind at the Hawthorns and only earned a point thanks to a sublime, side-footed strike from Daley Blind with just three minutes remaining.

Van Gaal, though, felt that United had played their best football of the 2014-15 campaign to date and was thus bitterly frustrated that the visitors had failed to secure the win that would have propelled them back into fourth place in the Premier league.

"I'm very disappointed because we played our best match of the season and the result is not good enough," the former Netherlands boss told Sky Sports.

"I have to also be happy because we created a lot of chances and only two shots from West Brom were goals.

"We gave it away because of our individual errors. That's a pity because you can give a new start when you win here, and that was possible I think."

Van Gaal opted to play Robin van Persie in a lone striker's role within a 4-2-3-1 system, with the change in formation the second alteration the veteran coach has made since originally opting to play 3-5-2 at the start of the season.

And he believes that his players are able to adapt to the new philosophy given their dominance at the Hawthorns.

"I'm looking for balance and maybe with this formation, but with the same philosophy, we could do better," the Dutchman mused. "I've seen in the training sessions that we are better now.

"The players understand the philosophy more with this formation. And I've seen it again today and that's why it's such a pity that they don't have the result they deserve."

Asked whether the formation could trouble Chelsea in their next game, he added: "You never know but I have a lot of confidence."

De Boer: Messi must listen to Luis Enrique

    486941_heroa.jpg

Frank de Boer says that just because Lionel Messi is the best player in the world, it does not mean that the Barcelona superstar can ignore his coach's instructions.
It has been reported in Spain that the Argentina international refused to be substituted during Saturday's Liga win over Eibar.Barca boss Luis Enrique has played down the significance of the incident but De Boer believes that even a player as great as Messi has to do as he is told.

"He is the best in the world and will be for many more years," the Ajax boss told reporters on the eve of Tuesday's Champions League meeting with the Blaugrana at Camp Nou.

"Leo also has great experience so he knows how he is physically. but when the coach says one thing, you have to listen."

De Boer, of course, spent four years lining out alongside Luis Enrique during their respective playing careers and the former defender still holds his old Barca team-mate in the highest esteem.

"He was one of the captains of the team, a fighter, a winner and an athlete who always gave 200 per cent," the Dutchman enthused. "He was an example to follow."Barca have made a fine start to life under Luis Enrique, who succeeded Gerardo Martino at the helm during the summer.

However, even though the Liga leaders are undefeated domestically, they were beaten by Paris Saint-Germain in their last Champions League outing and De Boer believes Ajax can spring a surprise in Catalunya."We can get a result in this game," he declared."We saw last year that we can get something from such games. But for that we have to perform at our maximum.

"Barcelona are of a higher level compared to us and have more experience.
"For every team playing here it is difficult to collect points - but we will try."

PSG cannot hide behind injuries, says Blanc

    487161_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain boss Laurent Blanc says he has no intention of using the club's current injury crisis as an excuse if they fail to defeat APOEL on Tuesday night.

The Ligue 1 champions took charge of Champions League Group F by beating Barcelona at the Parc des Princes last time out but have arrived in Cyprus without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Marquinhos, while there are significant doubts over the participation of David Luiz (thigh), Blaise Matuidi (hip), Thiago Motta and Yohan Cabaye (both groin).Blanc, though, is determined to avoid seeing the shock win over the Blaugrana effectively negated by a failure to beat APOEL.

"We want a positive result and we will not hid behind the injuries," the PSG boss declared. "Regardless of the team we pick, we have to take all three points."We will try to impose our game against a team that defends very deep. We can expect to have the ball but their players are very disciplined and courageous.

"This is a team to be taken very seriously. Here, you really have to do a lot to win.
"If we are not at our best in terms of determination, we will encounter many difficulties."However, Blanc has been buoyed by the availability of defender Thiago Silva, who has been out of action since August with a thigh problem.

"He is big player of great quality," the World Cup winner enthused. "And he is our captain."For the group, he has a special significance on the field and off it.

"He brings his individual qualities that are very, very important. He is a tremendous player."With star striker Ibrahimovic unlikely to start, Edinson Cavani is once again set to lead the PSG attack.

The Uruguay international was controversially dismissed for two bookable offences in last weekend's Ligue 1 win at Lens, after contesting his first yellow for celebrating a goal with his trademark 'machine gun salute'.Blanc admitted that he has had a word with Cavani but hinted that he fully expects the forward to celebrate in exactly the same way if he nets against APOEL.

"He has to move on and forget the red," the former France international argued. "Refereeing decisions are irrevocable once they are taken."I tried to explain to him why he sent off. But we're not going back to what happened against Lens.

"APOEL is another match. If he scores, I do not know what he will do. "Or rather, I know and I hope he will not be punished!"
