Valerenga 0-7 Barcelona: Messi on target as Catalans run riot

    224531hp2.jpg

Barcelona cruised to their first win of the pre-season campaign, hammering Valerenga in Oslo on Saturday.Alexis Sanchez, Cristian Tello and Lionel Messi all scored within the first 15 minutes, giving the Norwegians a mountain to climb. A goal just before half-time from Jonathan Dos Santos, a double from Jean Marie Dongou, and a late strike from Joan Roman sealed the win for the Catalan side.

It didn't take the Blaugrana long to open up their account, as Alexis put them ahead after just five minutes. Messi picked up the ball in a deep position in midfield and clipped a ball out to the right-hand side for the Chilean, who jinked his way into the box before guiding a left-footed strike home.Barca doubled their lead just one minute later, with Messi the architect once again. The Argentine found Tello with a lovely threaded pass inside the Valerenga right-back and the 21-year-old coolly stroked the ball home into the bottom right corner.

Never one to be left out of the goals, Messi grabbed the third of the match 13 minutes in. The Barcelona captain for the evening picked up the ball on the edge of the box and drifted past three challenges before reversing a left-footed shot into the bottom corner, giving goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld no chance.

New Barca coach Gerardo Martino watched from the stands as he witnessed his new side completely dominate the first half, and it could have been much worse for Valerenga in the opening 45 if not for the heroics of Hirschfeld in goal and the woodwork. The Canadian goalkeeper kept the score relatively low as he pulled of a string of saves from Messi, Tello, and Alexis. Barca were also denied midway through the half when the Argentine clipped a strike towards goal, only to see his attempt crash off the post.

The visitors would not have to wait too long to extend the scoreline, however. Dos Santos made it four just before the break as he latched on to an Alexis pass to the front post before squeezing a shot past Hirschfeld. It would not get much easier for the Norwegians after half-time as Barca scored two within the first 10 minutes of the second period through substitute, Dongou.

The Cameroonian latched on to a pass through the middle from Alexis and coolly finished. A couple of minutes later he received the ball from the Chilean again as he stabbed a shot home to make it 6-0 Valerenga grew into the match as the second half wore on, however, and almost grabbed a goal to please their home fans. Mohammed Fellah came closest for the Norwegians, but his two strikes from the edge of the box were easily handled by substitute keeper, Oier.

The victory was rounded off for Barcelona five minutes from time when substitute Joan Roman cut inside from the left-hand side and rifled a strike into the top left corner.Barcelona go on to face Rosenborg in Denmark on Monday as they prepare for the oncoming season and their defence of the Spanish Primera Division.

Thailand 0-3 Liverpool: Magical Coutinho goal sets up comfortable friendly win

    300080hp2.jpg

Phillipe Coutinho starred once again as Liverpool cruised to a 3-0 pre-season win over Thailand.A superb solo effort from the Brazilian provided the difference between the two sides in the first half, though Simon Mignolet was forced into making two important saves before the break.

Coutinho then teed up Iago Aspas after half-time, before skipper Steven Gerrard converted a third to complete victory.

Brendan Rodgers made six changes from his side's 2-0 win over Melbourne Victory but it was Suarez who made the headlines yet again, the Uruguayan forward being kept on the bench for the second friendly running.

As is becoming a regular fixture, though, Coutinho provided the early creativity for Rodgers's side as he combined with Fabio Borini to good effect inside the opening few minutes.

And the Reds' first big chance came after more incisive running from the 21-year-old, though Aspas's powerful shot was deflected for a corner.

Borini was next to threaten, first with an acrobatic volley and then a run at goal from distance but there was only ever going to be one man to open the scoring and Coutinho did so with a splendid move on 15 minutes. Receiving the ball in the Thailand area, the Brazilian did what he does best, twisting past two defenders and placing the ball into the bottom corner.

Thailand hit straight back, however, and Teerasil almost got them back on level terms with a curling shot that flashed just wide of Mignolet's near post.

Disappointingly for boss Rodgers, Liverpool then subsided into a defensive shell, allowing the home side to dictate play for an extended period.

Thailand's subsequent dominance forced keeper Mignolet into action on two occasions, though the Belgian responded in fine fashion with two fantastic saves. Aspas then fired across goal from a tight angle, before the half-time whistle signalled the end of a satisfactory half for the Reds.

After the break, however, Aspas would make no mistake with a clinical short-range finish, though credit was again due to Coutinho for a simple yet genius pass into the area.

Liverpool's second signalled an end to Thailand's admirable resistance and the Spaniard was involved yet again as Gerrard converted a third.

Another intricate move from the Reds saw Aspas unleashed in the area and he duly cut the ball back to his skipper, who sent a fine chip over the Thai keeper and into the back of the net.

From thereon in, the priority for Rodgers's side undoubtedly became keeping a clean sheet: they had not conceded a single goal thus far in pre-season.

But there was still time for Suarez to come on amidst loud cheers from the Bangkok crowd – and hit the bar with a thumping header. Gerrard had played the Uruguay forward in with a dangerous free kick but the 26-year-old stopped short of adding a fourth.

The captain himself then clipped the crossbar with a chip but the visitors would have to make do with just the three.

Negredo welcomes competition for places at Manchester City

    297436_heroa.jpg

New Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo is encouraged by the competition for places within the current squad.

Negredo joined Manuel Pellegrini’s side from Sevilla in a €25 million deal this summer, making him one of four forwards at the club alongside Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and fellow new signing Stevan Jovetic.

But the 27-year-old is unfazed by the prospect of fighting for his place within City’s starting XI, instead believing that such competition will "help the club succeed".

"It's an honour to be part of the [City] squad and, when you have a lot of competitiveness, it makes everyone be on the top of their form," Negredo told the Guardian.

"This competitiveness between all of the guys – Dzeko, Aguero, Jovetic – will help the club succeed."

Since joining Sevilla in 2009, Negredo scored 70 goals in 139 appearances for the La Liga club, convincing the forward that it was the right time for a move to the Premier League.

“Now I am at the peak of my form," he continued. "Also, this is another league and style of football and I am very confident I will succeed here – not just on an individual level but also in the group.

"I knew of [City's] interest this summer, it came through my agent and was a compliment. I was very happy and I wanted to join.

"It's a really big club, there is an opportunity to challenge for titles every single year and now I get to play in the Champions League. [Also] I wanted to get experience in the Premier League that I love."

Due to his strength, Negredo was once dubbed the 'Beast of Vallecas' by team-mates but the 27-year-old feels he has the skill to match his physicality.

"It makes me laugh when they called me the Beast," he added, "but, yes, I think I am a strong player who can fight and be physical.

"I can be both physical and technical. There are some matches where the physical approach is very important and other games where you can show off your skill."

Allegri: More to come from Milan

    284459_heroa.jpg

Massimiliano Allegri says there is even more to come from his AC Milan players after seeing his side overcome Valencia at the Estadio Mestalla on Saturday.

A first-half strike from Robinho and a 25-yard curling effort from Nigel De Jong put the visitors 2-0 ahead in the Guinness International Champions Cup encounter, and they held on for victory despite Dani Parejo's goal for Miroslav Djukic's men.
Speaking to SportMediaset, Allegri conceded that he had concerns over his side's fading fitness levels late in the game but assured fans that improvement was inevitable."It was a very intense match," the 45-year-old trainer said."I wanted to see if the team was in the right physical and psychological condition. We need to improve, as at the end we were struggling to stay on our feet, but for the moment I am satisfied.

"It was important to have a strong performance, especially in defence. Some players need a little more time on the field, but we always play to win, as victories help you to work better."We’re on the right track, though we have to do better in the final third. I am glad Nigel De Jong got his goal, as he deserved it."

The Rossoneri's next fixture is against Manchester City on Wednesday with Allegri hopeful of including Mario Balotelli against his former club for his first pre-season appearance.

Suarez signing would make Arsenal title contenders again, says Forlan

    295298_heroa.jpg

Uruguay striker Diego Forlan has urged Arsenal to sign Luis Suarez if they want to become serious title contenders once again.

As exclusively revealed by Goal, the forward is preparing to submit a transfer request to force a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Depsite Liverpool having so far rejected two bids for from the Gunners, Forlan believes that his compatriot would be the ideal recruit for Arsene Wenger.

"If they manage to sign Luis, then I think, with the players they already have, they would be serious title contenders again," the Internacional striker told reporters.

"Only Luis knows what his plans are but he would be a great signing for Arsenal."

Forlan believes that the Gunners' inability to challenge for trophies in recent years has stemmed from a failure to replace legendary striker Thierry Henry.

"Of course, Arsenal are a very strong team but, for the last years, they have not been able to compete with Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea for the title," the 34-year-old continued.

"They have had very good players but have maybe lacked that one special player who you need to win a league as strong as the Premier League.

"United have had Wayne Rooney and City have had Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez but Arsenal have struggled since Thierry Henry left."

Real bid for Bale an offer Spurs can't refuse

    garethbalecameraceleb20130303_576x324.jpg

For a short while after the end of last season, Gareth Bale invariably reaffirmed his commitment to Spurs whenever he was asked. At the time it seemed he meant it. Why store up trouble for himself with false protestations of loyalty if all along he was planning to move? Far better to say nothing and let reporters read into his silence what they will.

But in the last few weeks Bale has gone silent, just as the noises coming from Spain about a possible move to Real Madrid grow ever louder. Even the most optimistic Spurs fan - if that's not an oxymoron - can't help but feel that the Welsh winger will have left White Hart Lane by the beginning of September. Something - or rather someone - has turned Bale's head.

By their own high standards, Real Madrid had a poor season last year. It was compounded by reports of rifts between players and manager that ended with Jose Mourinho walking out to have a second bite at the Chelsea job. Madrid can't afford another season like that. More importantly, the club can't afford not to appear as if it is prepared to throw money at the problem to get a quick fix as its supporters would demand nothing less. So making what might seem like a ludicrously high bid of 100 million euro as has been widely suggested in newspaper reports has a semblance of business sense.

Which isn't to say that the Spanish club's interests necessarily coincide with Bale's. Bale is well settled at White Hart Lane and in Andre Villas Boas he has a manager who understands him, reassures him - the confidence AVB has generated in Bale is a largely unacknowledged factor in the Welshman's annus mirabilis last season - and is prepared to build a team around him. Just as important, Bale's wife and baby are also well settled and are unlikely to be enthusiastic about uprooting to a foreign country where they know no one and don't speak the language. At Madrid, Bale will be just one megastar among many - it's hard to imagine Ronaldo being too thrilled by his arrival - and the pressure to deliver from the very first game will be intense. The Madrid crowd won't be nearly so forgiving of a poor game.

So who is the someone who has apparently changed Bale's mind? The finger inevitably points to his agent, Jonathan Barnett, one of the shrewdest and toughest operators in the game as the only thing that does make sense about this deal for Bale is the money. Barnett knows that Real Madrid are never likely to be this desperate again in the near future. Whether Bale moves to Madrid or not, Real will almost certainly be a lot closer to their arch rivals, Barcelona, this season. Come next year, then, when there is a little less panic and a bit more common sense in the Spanish capital, Bale's price will probably go down by at least 25%.

Then there is also the question of injury. No player likes to be reminded of this, but every time he takes the pitch he is only one bad tackle away from the end of his career. What's more players like Bale, whose game rely so much on pace are seldom the same again after an injury that sidelines them for a season. Put all this together and you can see why this looks like a once in a lifetime opportunity for Bale and Barnett to cash in.

What's stopping the deal going through is almost certain to be the legendary intransigence of Spurs' chairman, Daniel Levy, who can't bear the thought of being outmanoeuvred in a deal. Stubbornness is his default mode and the more Real Madrid go on about how much Bale wants to play for them and how much they have offered for him, the more Levy is prone to saying that Bale has a contract with Spurs and he is going nowhere.

This, though, is one occasion when he should swallow his pride and let Bale go. Keeping a footballer who doesn't want to play for you is invariably counterproductive as Levy should know, having forced Luka Modric to stay at White Hart Lane for an extra year. Modric started his last season in a sulk, raised his game for a while in the middle, before looking moody and uninterested once more over the last three months of the season as the speculation very his transfer grew again. You could also argue that it was Modric's lack of enthusiasm that was partially responsible for Spurs losing what looked like a certain Champions League spot that year.

The killer detail is the money, though. Even in an era of over-inflated price tags, Bale is simply not worth 100 million euor. That's the equivalent of six Paulinhos. The price is a madness that only makes sense to Real Madrid. So Levy should accept the money with alacrity and wish Bale well on his travels abroad. Everyone at White Hart Lane will be sad to see him go, but there are some offers you can't refuse. Levy should pocket the money as soon as possible and use it to secure the services of Soldado at whatever price Valencia want.

But if Levy really wants to bargain with Real then he could insist on a part-exchange. Bale and Ronaldo play in near identical positions these days so it's not easy to see them fitting into the same starting XI, so how about Levy asking for part exchange. Bale for Ronaldo plus 30 million euro. That really would be a steal.

Moyes sure of buys, unsure of Cesc

    cescfabregasbarcelonaceleb_576x324.jpg

David Moyes is "confident" Manchester United will make more signings before the transfer window closes - but is unsure if they will make a third offer for Cesc Fabregas.Barcelona have rejected two bids for the Spain international and new manager Gerardo Martino has insisted the former Arsenal captain will not be leaving the Camp Nou.But while United have not ended their interest in Fabregas, Moyes is debating what to do next.

"I couldn't tell you if there will be another bid," he said at a press conference in Hong Kong. "I never at any time said I knew we would get him. I just said we had made offers. They have been rejected. We will take stock from there and decide what we are going to do next."But what we have here is a really good squad of players already. You mustn't forget about the quality that is already here at Manchester United.”

United have also failed in bids for Thiago Alcantara, who joined Bayern Munich, and Everton left-back Leighton Baines while Moyes has also been linked with Marouane Fellaini, Luka Modric and Yohan Cabaye. But while he said he is pleased with the group of players he inherited, he is eager to bring in more.He added: "Undoubtedly we are hoping to add to it. I am quite confident we will do, certainly before the window shuts. We have got until September 2nd."

So far United’s only summer signings are winger Wilfried Zaha, whose £15 million move from Crystal Palace was arranged by Sir Alex Ferguson’s before his retirement, and Uruguayan youngster Guillermo Varela.Meanwhile, United will be without defender Jonny Evans when they face Kitchee FC in Hong Kong on Monday.

“The only one who won't be involved tomorrow is Jonny Evans, who is feeling his ankle,'' added Moyes. “We will make sure we keep him out of it omorrow.”Captain Nemanja Vidic has missed the pre-season tour of Asia and Australia with a back injury but is set to face Crewe in a friendly on Monday night.
Moyes said: “Nemanja is coming on well. All being well, he will play at Crewe.”

But Wayne Rooney, who has been suffering from a hamstring injury, will not make his comeback and is likely to return against AIK Solna in Stockholm on August 6.“He is not quite ready for that [Crewe] yet. At the moment we think he is on course to play in that (AIK) game."

USA 1-0 Panama: Suspended Klinsmann claims first trophy with Gold Cup win

    300239hp2.jpg

Jurgen Klinsmann helped get them there, and a young squad did the rest to get their coach his first trophy with the United States courtesy of a 1-0 win over Panama in the final of the Gold Cup.

With Klinsmann sitting in a booth high above the playing field at Soldier Field, the Stars and Stripes overcame their coach's suspension and dominated their opponents to claim victory before a crowd 57,900 on Sunday afternoon thanks a solitary strike from Brek Shea, on 69 minutes.

The US have now won five Gold Cups, but this is the first trophy for their German coach, who took over the national squad two years ago and has the team headed in the right direction ahead of next summer's World Cup in Brazil.

Klinsmann was suspended for the match after getting tossed out of his team's 3-1 victory over Honduras in the semi-finals on Wednesday. In Klinsmann's absence, his two assistant coaches, Martin Vasquez and Andreas Herzog, handled responsibilities from the sideline.

Their first major coaching decision came in the 23rd minute when they subbed out Stuart Holden after the midfielder went down with a knee injury caused by a collision with Panama's Alberto Quintero. Holden, who has been battling knee injuries for the last two years, was replaced by Mix Diskerud.

Holden's injury, which is being called a sprained knee and will be reevaluated, overshadowed anything that happened on the field in a first half that was lacked any real scoring chances for the Americas.

But things would go much more smoothly for the hosts in the second half.

Playing with a sense of urgency, Landon Donovan nearly drew a penalty kick shortly after halftime when he kicked the ball into a defender's hand, but the referee decide it was incidental contact. Moments later, he headed a cross just wide of the goal.

With full momentum on their side, the much-anticipated goal would come with just over 20 minutes to go. Donovan whiffed on a cross from Alejandro Bedoya but the ball rolled to Shea at the far post for an easy tap-in goal.

Shea, who had recorded his first international goal earlier in the tournament, scored just 43 seconds after entering the match for Joe Corona.

After the goal, Klinsmann left his box and would appear on the pitch after the final whistle to celebrate with the mostly reserve side that proved how deep the U.S. player pool has gotten since the German trainer took over.
