Switzerland 1-0 Brazil: Alves own goal hands Hitzfeld's men famous win

Switzerland brought an end to Brazil’s 11-match unbeaten run as Dani Alves headed into his own net to hand the hosts a shock 1-0 win.The Barcelona defender failed to control a swinging cross from Xherdan Shaqiri and put the ball through his own goal with 47 minutes gone. The victory for Switzerland marks their first since 1989 against the five-time world champions.

Hitzeld fielded a strong side for the match, including veteran Philippe Senderos as well as promising Bayern Munich youngster Shaqiri. His Brazil counterpart Luiz Felipe Scolari opted to stick with nine of the XI who had won the Confederations Cup final against Spain, with Julio Cesar and David Luiz absent.

The visitors started strongly, piling on the pressure – and it looked like they would be rewarded in the 11th minute when Fred shook off his man to feed Hulk, but quick reactions from Diego Benaglio saw the 27-year-old’s shot kept out.The home side continued to struggle to retain possession, and the Wolfsburg goalkeeper was called into action again a few minutes later. Hulk was once more involved as he charged at goal, but his shot fell well for Benaglio, who saved with his feet.

Switzerland did pose some threat on the break, but their finishing was wayward.
Tempers began to fray shortly before half-time, when Stephan Lichtsteiner was chopped down by Neymar, with the Barcelona striker earning a yellow card as referee Deniz Aytekin struggled to separate the players.

Brazil should have opened the scoring when Paulinho’s header came back off the crossbar, before Shaqiri tested Brazil goalkeeper Jefferson with a long-range effort at the other end.

At the break, the hosts withdrew Valentin Stocker for Tranquillo Barnetta, while 21-year-old Fabian Schaer made his international bow at the expense of Senderos. The changes reaped rewards within a few minutes, as Switzerland’s pressure ended with a cross from Shaqiri and Alves inadvertently headed past his own keeper.

Brazil's embarrassment was almost increased soon after when Jefferson failed to control a ball leading to a melee in the box, with Haris Seferovic just beaten to it by the Brazilian.Scolari opted to make three changes to force the game, with the most notable seeing 31-year-old Paris Saint-Germain defender Maxwell make his international debut while Fred – who has scored five in five for Brazil – left the field to be replaced by Jo.

That did not seem to help the visitors, who still found themselves battling against the impressive Swiss attack – which was typified through Shaqiri, who once again fired over the crossbar.Brazil attempted to fight back in the latter stages, going close through Jo, but debutant defender Michael Lang intercepted.

The loss marked the first for Brazil since February, while Switzerland gained a confidence-boosting win ahead of the resumption of their World Cup qualifying campaign.

:shocked:Fan jailed for hugging Cristiano Ronaldo

    303834_heroa.jpg

The fan who was jailed for invading the pitch during the International Champions Cup match between Real Madrid and Chelsea to hug Cristiano Ronaldo last week has stressed that he has no regrets over his actions.

Ronald Gjoka, 19, ran onto the pitch in the 67th minute to embrace his idol, only to be arrested by local police and taken to jail for trespassing and disorderly conduct.

Gjoka spent the night in prison before he was allowed to leave the day after, yet he has stressed that the moment was worth the punishment.

"Honestly, first thing was look straight, find Cristiano and don't look back. Just go," Gjoka told Local10.

"I decided to add a little knee slide on it just for a little celebration. I think Ronaldo always does that celebration so I thought that he would find it funny, and he did, he gave it a little laugh.

"But after that, I gave him a big hug, told him you're one of my biggest idols, always followed you and I said, 'Please, Ronaldo, don't let the cops take me,' and that's when Ronaldo gave me a very big hug.

"I got the opportunity to talk to Ronaldo. It was a unique opportunity and I had to take it. It was worth the detention."

The Portugal international netted twice to help Madrid to a 3-1 win over Chelsea in last week's encounter.

Tottenham agree deal with Toulouse for transfer of Etienne Capoue

    16-9

Tottenham have agreed a deal with Toulouse for the transfer of midfielder Etienne Capoue.

The 25-year-old had been linked with a move to White Hart Lane for some time and will now link up with Andre Villas-Boas' squad for the new Barclays Premier League season.A number of Premier League clubs were believed to be interested in signing Capoue with Arsenal, Everton and Liverpool all linked with the player in recent weeks.

Atletico Madrid were also thought to have made a bid but Premier League newcomers Cardiff came closest to scuppering Tottenham's move, with Bluebirds manager Malky Mackay confirming he had a bid of around £9m accepted by Toulouse.Mackay described discussions over personal terms with the player as 'delicate' and was unable to add the midfielder to his summer signings.Capoue, who has seven full caps for France, made his Toulouse debut in 2007 and went on to become one of their most important players.

The midfielder, who can also be employed at centre-half, was also named in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year in 2012 alongside new Spurs team-mate Hugo Lloris.

Richard Scudamore says World Cup switch is "nigh on impossible"

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore says it would be "nigh on impossible" for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to be moved to winter.Concerns have been raised over the searing summer temperatures in the Gulf state and the dangers that would pose to players and spectators.

As a result there have been increasing calls for the competition to be switched to winter, with the tournament organisers confirming they are willing to make the move if necessary. That would, of course, mean a significant reshuffle to the domestic football calendar, something Scudamore does not think is possible given the extent of the disruption it would cause."They've decided to hold the World Cup in the summer in Qatar and that's their decision," he told Sky Sports News.

"If that is deemed to be not possible, for whatever reasons FIFA decide and that is their decision not ours as to where they hold the World Cup, then they need to either move the location if it can't be held in the summer or we can't just on a whim decide to move it to winter, that's a very different issue."When asked whether if it would be impossible for the World Cup to be moved to winter, he added: "Of course, it's extremely difficult, nigh on impossible in our view.

"Where they award the summer World Cup to is entirely the FIFA executive committee's decision, entirely their decision, not our business."The international football calendar is one that has to be consulted through; it is not something FIFA can just decide because the whole of world football has an interest in that.

"There is a whole series of complications around that and that consultation process has to be a separate consultation process with leagues and associations on a global basis, not just the Premier League and European Leagues, to make sure it works for everybody."

David Moyes confident of adding to Manchester United squad

    Wigan-v-Manchester-United-David-Moyes-Owen-Co_2985689.jpg

Manchester United manager David Moyes has revealed he is confident of adding to his squad before the transfer window closes on 2 September.
United have had a couple of bids for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas rejected this summer, but Moyes is expecting some new arrivals at Old Trafford in the near future.Speaking at the launch of the new Premier League season, the Scot told Sky Sports News: "I'm confident we will have players in.

"We are involved in several players we are looking at and that will continue. Will we get them before the deadline? I hope so, but we are working very hard to do so."Moyes admits it has been a busy summer for him after taking over the reins from Sir Alex Ferguson.

He added: "This was always going to be a difficult window for me personally because I joined Manchester United on 1 July so it is giving you a short period to get to know the players and to get to know the market."Yes of course I was working on it during the summer but it is never the same until you have actually worked with the players and been around them.

"But what I do know is the group of players we have got are a great group of players - they won the Premier League last year."We have got lots of young exciting players - a lot of them played for England last night - so it is important that we focus on the players we have got at Manchester United and how well they have done last year.

"There is not much change so hopefully they will be able to continue the way they finished last season."Ferguson is now a director of the club and Moyes says he has spoken to him regularly during the off-season.

He added: "I went to see him at his house and I speak to him quite regularly on the phone. It's good to have someone I can go to if I need any advice, especially at a club like Manchester United."He's great and he's someone I look forward to taking advice from in the future."

:baffled::eek:Cesc Fabregas remains transfer target for Manchester United who are ready to bid £40m for Barcelona player

    Cesc_Fabregas_2644146b.jpg

United appeared to have abandoned their pursuit of Fabregas last week following comments by the 26-year-old which suggested he had no intention of leaving the Nou Camp, two years after returning to his hometown club from Arsenal.

After Fabregas had claimed in Malaysia during the Spanish champions’ Far East tour last Friday that he was “very happy at Barcelona”, United responded by issuing a statement insisting they “completely respect everything Cesc has said”.However, Moyes and senior figures at Old Trafford remain convinced that Fabregas continues to harbour doubts over his first-team prospects at the Nou Camp and that the next two weeks will be pivotal in their attempts to sign the player.

It is also understood that Barcelona have indicated to United a figure which would prompt them to consider selling Fabregas, but Moyes is keen to assess the situation before sanctioning another offer following Barcelona’s rejection of bids worth £26 million and £30 million from Old Trafford. With Fabregas facing time on the sidelines with sprained ankle ligaments — an injury which ruled him out of Spain’s friendly against Ecuador in Guayaquil on Wednesday night — Moyes is ready to monitor the player’s involvement with Barcelona in their fixtures leading up to the Sept 2 transfer deadline before lodging a third bid.

Fabregas could be back for Barcelona’s La Liga opener against Levante on Sunday and should be fit for the first leg of the Super Cup encounter with Atletico Madrid next Wednesday.

Following the Atletico tie, Barcelona face Malaga and Valencia in the league, either side of the second leg of the Super Cup, and United believe that Fabregas’s contribution to those fixtures will decide the player’s future. While talking of his happiness at the Spanish Catalan capital and that "triumphing in Barcelona is what I have been hoping for all my life", Fabregas also admitted in Malaysia to being "flattered" by United’s interest and that his priority was to play first-team football.

Comments by new Barcelona manager Tata Martino that Fabregas would be a key player in his plans have been welcomed by the midfielder, but there is also a concern that the £53 million signing of Brazil international Neymar will ultimately lead to Fabregas losing his place in the team. With Spain due to defend the World Cup in Brazil next summer, Fabregas is known to be determined to ensure that he plays regular first-team football in order to avoid dropping out of Vicente del Bosque’s team.

United are aware, however, that prising Fabregas from Barcelona remains a difficult challenge and that there is no guarantee that a third bid will prove successful, despite the indications from the Nou Camp of a potential transfer fee. United chief executive Ed Woodward, having made it clear that Wayne Rooney will not be sold this summer, is also keen to deliver a statement of intent in his first season at the helm by securing the services of a player in the Fabregas bracket.Moyes is expected to return to former club Everton with bids for Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini in the coming days, but there remains a desire at the highest level at United to secure a marquee signing before the transfer window closes.

On Wednesday Everton manager Roberto Martinez played down the prospects of a United bid for Baines saying one club had put in a “final offer” before his side left for a tour of Austria.“They put something over and the valuation wasn’t anywhere near the quality of Leighton Baines,” Martinez said.“That was the end of it but since then there’s been all the speculation, which has been part of what the transfer window is.“There’s never been another club or anyone else putting in an offer for Leighton.”

Efforts to persuade Real Madrid to sell Cristiano Ronaldo back to United, four years after his world record £80m sale to the Bernabéu, have failed to make significant progress and despite the champions’ interest in Gareth Bale, there is an acceptance that persuading Tottenham to sell the Wales international in the final weeks of the window would be hugely difficult. As a long-term admirer of Real Madrid’s Luka Modric, Moyes could yet move for the former Tottenham player should Fabregas prove unattainable, but the Croatian midfielder remains a fall-back option rather than a priority target.

Similarly, Real’s Germany international Mesut Ozil is another player who could be considered if Fabregas or Barcelona deliver a definitive rejection of any further United offer.

:shocked:Arsenal blow as Wolfsburg pounce to agree £17 million deal with Bayern Munich for Luiz Gustavo

    gustavo_2644600b.jpg

It comes just days after Arsène Wengersaid he was interested in the Bayern Munich playmaker, who would effectively replace Alex Song in the heart of the Gunners' midfield.Arsenal valued 26-year-old Gustavo at around £14m but appear to have been unwilling to go much higher, allowing Wolfsburg manager Klaus Allofs to submit his winning bid.

The Bundesliga club have been long-term admirers of the Brazil international.Arsenal also had an £18 million offer for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender rejected earlier in the summer, and have lost out on Toulouse midfielder Etienne Capoue, who is set to join rivals Tottenham in an £8.6 million deal today.Wenger is now under increasing pressure to secure more signings, as his only capture so far has been France youth international striker Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer from Auxerre.

Ivan Gazidis, Arsenal's chief executive, has previously said the club has enough funds to secure top players and should aim to strengthen the squad.
