Real Madrid 2-1 Betis: Isco hands Ancelotti debut win

    307065hp2.jpg

A late Isco goal four minutes from time ensured Carlo Ancelotti began his reign as Real Madrid boss with a victory against Betis.

The hosts were stunned, however, when Jorge Molina gave the visitors the lead after excellent work by Cedric Mabwati, before Karim Benzema found an equaliser for los Blancos, converting Marcelo's cross.

Both sides enjoyed a number of chances as Cristiano Ronaldo and Nosa Igiebor both struck the woodwork.

But it was Marcelo, who had been a constant threat down the left for Madrid, who then delivered a ball across for debutant Isco to head home to give Ancelotti a winning start at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Italian coach kept faith in goalkeeper Diego Lopez as he was given the nod in goal ahead of Iker Casillas.

Betis, who signed a total of 13 players during the close-season, had four new faces in their first 11 as Stephan Andersen, Joan Verdu, Cedric and Juanfran all made their debuts.

Madrid started impressively and had a goal disallowed two minutes in. Betis replied instantly with a chance of their own as Jorge Molina met Nacho's left-wing cross with a well-timed header, but Lopez was up to the challenge and parried it away.

The forward came out on top the next time the duo came head to head, however.

Cedric, who reportedly cost just €1.20 from Numancia, burst through the centre and past Sergio Ramos before squaring a pass into the danger area for Molina to prod into the goal as Betis took a shock lead.

Ancelotti's side had another goal ruled out for offside just after the 20th minute, but they did eventually draw level midway through the first half as Benzema tapped in Isco's low cross from the left.

Pepe Mel's Betis could have added a second 10 minutes from half-time as Nosa Igiebor headed Verdu's corner on to the crossbar, while Carvajal was lucky not to concede a penalty a few moments later as he knocked Cedric to the ground and the score remained 1-1 at the break.

The second half began in a similar manner to the first as Madrid attacked from the off and Ronaldo rattled the crossbar with a side-footed effort after pouncing on a loose ball just inside Betis' area.

Benzema was the next to go close. Marcelo, who impressed down the left before half-time, fizzed a low delivery in towards the goal area but the France striker could not hit the target from an acute angle.

With attacks in open play giving Madrid little success, they were denied a penalty when Ronaldo's cross appeared to strike the arm of Nacho, while the Portuguese star's shot five minutes later was well saved by Andersen after Mesut Ozil's through ball.

Ancelotti introduced Alvaro Morata from the bench in an attempt to change things in attack, but it was Isco who found the winner as he headed Marcelo's cross into the net from the centre of the area with four minutes left.

Paris Saint-Germain 1-1 Ajaccio: Cavani saves hosts' blushes

    307093hp2.jpg

A terrific strike after 86 minutes from Edinson Cavani secured a 1-1 draw for Paris Saint-Germain, who looked likely to surprisingly succumb at home to Ajaccio.

Benoit Pedretti’s fine opening goal had the Corsicans in front before a stunning performance from Guillermo Ochoa in the visiting goal kept the hosts at bay. But Cavani scored a beauty from 18 yards to secure a draw just before full-time.

However, the Uruguayan's stunning equaliser ensured Laurent Blanc's side avoided defeat, although this is likely to be scant consolation after statistics showed they had 30 plus shots to the visitors' one throughout the match.

It was Cavani's first league start for the club, while fellow close-season signing Marquinhos was named on the bench by Blanc.

For the visitors, Joshua Nadeau replaced the suspended Benjamin Andre and Sigamary Diarra was preferred to Johan Cavalli.

It was PSG who made the early running, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic's free-kick forcing Guillermo Ochoa into a parried save only for the ball to trickle along the goal line and behind for a corner.

However, Ajaccio went ahead after 10 minutes thanks to a superb effort from Pedretti.

The French playmaker caressed a delicious strike from outside the box into the top corner past a helpless Salvatore Sirigu.

The champions then forced good chances through Ibrahimovic and Maxwell as they looked to restore parity, but Ochoa was equal to them both.

Sweden international Ibrahimovic again threatened after 33 minutes, chesting a ball down and firing past Ochoa's right-hand post before his knockdown almost forced Ronald Zubar to turn the ball into his own net.

PSG continued to apply pressure but they were frustrated for the remainder of the half by a stubborn Ajaccio defence, and went in behind at the break.

The second half began in much the same vein as the first ended, with Blanc's men threatening from the off.

Cavani headed wide two minutes in before Alex forced Pedretti into a goal line clearance just after the hour mark.

Christophe Jallet scuffed a glorious opportunity wide after 72 minutes as the chances continued to flow for the visibly-frustrated home side.

Ochoa's goal carried on leading a charmed life as Thiago Silva crashed a header against the bar but eventually, the home side were level four minutes from time through Cavani.

The close-season signing from Napoli opened his PSG account in style, turning Zubar on the edge of the area before arrowing a strike into the top corner.

Sensing a winner, PSG continued to push, with their captain Silva curling an effort just wide before Ezequiel Lavezzi saw his appeal for a penalty turned away after he went down under the challenge of Laurent Bonnart.

There was still time for a goal line clearance from the hosts' defence as well as an excellent Ochoa save from a stooping Marco Verratti header and another shot from Silva that rattled the bar.

However, it somehow remained level, meaning the champions lost further ground to their title rivals after Monaco, Lyon and Marseille all kept up their winning starts to the season over the weekend.

Juventus 4-0 Lazio: Second-half salvo secures Supercoppa

    307053hp2.jpg

Juventus reclaimed the Supercoppa by virtue of a routine 4-0 success over Lazio.

Paul Pogba opened the scoring in the first half shortly after replacing Claudio Marchisio but it was three goals in six second-period minutes which proved decisive.

Giorgio Chiellini. Stephan Lichtsteiner and Carlos Tevez completed the rout prior to the hour mark, ensuring the Serie A champions secured their first silverware of the new campaign.

Juventus named a strong side for the meeting with the Coppa Italia holders, although Fernando Llorente was omitted to allow Tevez to partner Mirko Vucinic in attack. Lazio, meanwhile, were without the services of captain Stefano Mauri following his six-month suspension for match-fixing offences. The game started at a frenetic pace, with both sides carving out presentable opportunities in the opening stages.

Only a desperate Arturo Vidal headed clearance prevented Andre Dias grabbing a goal for Lazio in the 10th minute, while Vucinic went agonisingly close to nodding an Andrea Pirlo cross into the net in the immediate aftermath.

A much-required break in play in a breathless start was provided in unfortunate circumstances in the 21st minute, when Claudio Marchisio was forced to leave the field after picking up an injury while challenging Stefan Radu for the ball. But the unplanned introduction of his replacement Pogba led to the deadlock being broken.

Lichtsteiner worked space to receive a Pirlo ball on the right before finding the unmarked Frenchman via a deflected cross. And he made no mistake after receiving that slice of luck, turning and smashing the ball home hard and low past Federico Marchetti just two minutes after arriving on the pitch.

That goal did not bring about a let up in the intensity of the game, either, with Hernanes and Andrea Barzagli both picking up yellow cards for cynical challenges prior to a hard-fought first half coming to a close. The end-to-end nature of the fixture continued after the break, and so it was of little surprise when Juventus' second goal came courtesy of a devastating counter-attack.

Conte's side had been defending a corner in their own box but, from the clearance, Vidal found Lichtsteiner's roving run down the right and the Swiss completed the simple task of teeing up Chiellini following a lung-bursting sprint upfield.

Lichtsteiner had been a constant source of worry for Lazio throughout the match and, when Juventus grabbed a third just two minutes later, the 29-year-old was a deserving scorer. He played a delightful one-two with Vucinic to deceive the Lazio defence before producing a delightful outside-of-the-boot finish to cement Juve's utter dominance of the fixture. But they were not done there, as some Marchetti heroics denied Pogba but allowed Tevez to grab his first competitive goal for Juventus since joining from Manchester City from close range amid some chaotic Lazio defending.

The remaining half-hour did not see an end to the chances, but a Miroslav Klose effort that was well-saved by Gianluigi Buffon was the closest either side came as Juventus held on to seal their second-successive Supercoppa victory.

Isco targets improvement from Real Madrid

    301752_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid attacker Isco says they must improve despite their narrow 2-1 victory over Betis.

The summer recruit from Malaga nodded home late in the game to get los Blancos off to a winning start after Jorge Molina had put the visitors in front before Karim Benzema's equaliser.

Isco admitted that he had been “surprised” by the level of performance displayed by Betis, but insisted that his side will improve as the season continues.

“I’m happy with the win, we started with a victory at home and now we must continue along the same lines,” the playmaker told Canal+.

“It’s my first goal I’ve put in with my head in my first game but I’m happy about taking all three points as well.

“It’s the first league game, we’ll have to improve a lot, but we’ve just started and we’ve added three points,” he stated, acknowledging that his late goal was vital in making sure Carlo Ancelotti’s side don’t lose any early ground to rivals Barcelona, who thrashed Levante 7-0.

While happy to talk on the victory though, the Spain Under-21 star would not be drawn on questions surrounding the omission of Iker Casillas, with Diego Lopez continuing in goal.

He said: “That is a decision of the coach. The important thing is the victory.”

    Blanc bemused by PSG draw

    302169_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain coach Laurent Blanc was left baffled as his side failed to pick up their first win of the season after a 1-1 draw with Ajaccio.

The Ligue 1 champions peppered their opponent’s goal, amassing over 30 shots on the night, but still had to settle for a point, much to the frustration of their new coach.

“We're not ready yet, we knew that,” Blanc told reporters.

“The real disappointment is losing two points tonight. Paris deserved to win.”

Blanc’s side fell behind for the second league game in succession and admitted that this is a worrying trend that needs to be addressed.

“Ajaccio and Montpellier took advantage of their opportunity to open the scoring. This is one opportunity too many.

“Even if we didn’t make the best of starts though, our first half was not bad.”

It was left to substitute Edinson Cavani to rescue a point for les Parisiens but Blanc admitted that he was reluctant to even bring the Uruguayan on, admitting that he is still some way off creating the perfect partnership with Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“I had planned not to play Cavani all match. We took a risk, but we did well to keep it on the ground," he added.

“The challenge will be to combine Zlatan and Edinson. If we get there, we will score many goals.”

Ancelotti unconvinced by Real Madrid's defensive frailties

    299842_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti was left unconvinced by his side’s defensive display as Real Madrid snuck past Betis 2-1 on the opening weekend of the Liga season.

The Italian coach indicated that he was unhappy at the backline as a whole and suggested that goalkeeper Diego Lopez and others may find themselves out of the starting XI for Madrid’s next outing.

“We have to improve. We created chances to score but we had problems in defence,” explained the former PSG boss.

“Today I decided to choose Diego Lopez. I don’t know who is going to play in the next game.

“I have a great squad. [Alvaro] Morata, [Angel] Di Maria and Casemiro made the team stronger tonight [when they came of the bench].”

One thing that did impress Ancelotti was the performance of new signing Isco.

The Spain Under-21 star chose Madrid over Manchester City and others this summer and his new coach praised the playmaker after his goal sealed the points for los Blancos.

“Isco gave it all in this game,” stated the 54-year-old. “He scored a fantastic goal.”

The new Madrid coach was also quick to lament the international break just days before their opening Liga clash, citing it as a further distraction to his side’s preparations for the game against Betis.

He added: “We didn’t have time to prepare for the game due to the international games.”

Watzke: We knew Lewandowski would be disappointed

    286777_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke has admitted that Robert Lewandowski was left disappointed after he was denied the chance to leave the club this summer.

The want-away striker made it clear to the BVB hierarchy of his wish to join arch rivals Bayern Munich, but after his initial frustration of not being afforded his dream move, Watzke believes the situation has now been resolved.

“Robert’s wish – to go to Bayern this summer – was legitimate,” Watzke told Bild am Sonntag.

“It was also clear that he would initially be disappointed because we didn’t let him go.

“I sat down with him, his advisors and our sporting director Michael Zorc recently and the situation has been worked out, as it should be.”

Watzke also talked about the future for BVB, discussing the importance of making sure the recent influx of funds, from the sale of Mario Gotze and their money-spinning Champions League campaign, were put to good use.

“It is important for us to build up reserves so that we are always able to respond to certain situations, for example, to bring in a player if one of our stars leaves," he continued.

“Dortmund will never be left without funds.”

Jurgen Klopp’s side currently sit top of the Bundesliga after winning both their opening matches of the season.

Even Messi needs a rest, says Martino

    307011_heroa.jpg

Barcelona boss Gerardo Martino has emphasised the importance of keeping talisman Lionel Messi fit and fresh for the upcoming season.

The coach was speaking after he took off the four-time Ballon d’Or winner and replaced him with Andres Iniesta midway through the second half of the Blaugrana’s emphatic 7-0 victory over Levante in their opening weekend fixture.

Messi barely missed a game last season until his hamstring injury in April and Martino is aware that not given the Argentine, who scored a double against Levante, a break could be harmful to Barca's chances of success this campaign.

“I discussed with Leo he needs to rest every now and then,” the former Paraguay coach told reporters.

“Of course, when the game is tight, not even the biggest fool subs him.

“The season is long, and there’s a difficult series of fixtures coming up. He’s very intelligent, he knows that.”

Another player who was not getting as much pitch time as Barca may have wished for was summer capture Neymar.

The former Santos man only appeared off the bench for the final 25 minutes and picked up a yellow card in the process, but Martino insisted that the Brazilian needs time to settle.

"We have to give Neymar the time to adapt bit by bit,” explained the 50-year-old. “If we go too fast, we'll harm the player and the team."

Martino was thrilled with how his players had responded after there were question marks over the preparation for the new season following an underwhelming display in Malaysia at the end of pre-season.

He said: “This start of the season is better than everything I could have imagined. Now we have to keep this level.”

“I love Barcelona’s philosophy, and I want the boys to recover some of the things they weren’t doing anymore.”

Mourinho has come home, says Lampard

    306959_heroa.jpg

Frank Lampard has hailed Jose Mourinho’s return to the Premier League following Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Hull City Tigers on Sunday.

Oscar struck the opening goal before Frank Lampard's 30-yard free kick sealed a comfortable win against Steve Bruce's side at Stamford Bridge.

"It was brilliant. I think the crowd loved it and he loved it," Lampard told Sky Sports.

"He was obviously very professional and concentrating on the game, but it was a great atmosphere with the fans.

"He's come home. We know how much the club means to him and what he means to the fans."

The England international was impressed with Chelsea’s first game of the new season but feels they need to focus on maintaining a strong performance throughout the 90 minutes.

"We were very sharp from the start, particularly in the first half," Lampard added.

"In the first half-hour we moved the ball really quickly. If we play like that then we’re going to give most teams a good game.

"We were so bright in the first half that maybe there was a little bit of a come-down in the second.

"It was a great day and a great start but we have to now kick on."

Mourinho's side will host Aston Villa on Wednesday, before a trip to Premier League champions Manchester United the following Monday.

Juventus striker Matri set to sign for Napoli

    302681_heroa.jpg

Juventus have agreed the sale of striker Alessandro Matri to Serie A rivals Napoli for €12 million ahead of the first weekend of the season in Italy.

The Bianconeri frontman looks set to become Napoli’s eighth signing of the summer following the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Jose Callejon and Dries Mertens to Naples.

New boss Rafa Benitez is continuing to invest money into the squad gained from selling star forward Edinson Cavani to Paris Saint-Germain at the beginning of the summer for €64 million.

Matri has scored 36 goals in 85 appearances at Juventus and it was believed the former Cagliari man had been holding out for a move to his former club AC Milan when it became apparent he was surplus to requirements at Juventus Stadium after the signings of Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente.

However, a lack of available of funds at San Siro and an unwillingness from the Old Lady to allow the 28-year-old to leave on loan for the season - a factor that has also put paid to any move away from Turin for fellow attacker Fabio Quagliarella - has seen Matri’s options for the upcoming season restricted.

A deal has been struck between the two clubs, who finished first and second in Serie A last season, as Matri looks to make his mark in the league and stake his claim for a spot in the Italy national side ahead of the World Cup in Brazil next summer.

Hawk-Eye system stands up to first test

    18213.jpg

Chelsea were 2-0 up in first-half stoppagetime when Hawk-Eye was called on when Branislav Ivanovic headed Frank Lampard's corner straight at keeper Allan McGregor, who saved on the line at the second attempt.

The referee's watch will only buzz when the ball crosses the line, and Jonathan Moss played on and was clearly confident the ball did not go in. TV replays on Sky also indicated the technology was spot-on.
