Chelsea have plan B and C if Rooney bid fails - Mourinho

    306962_heroa.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that he has a back-up plan if his pursuit of Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney fails.

Earlier in the summer Mourinho claimed Rooney was his only transfer target, and the Blues have since had two bids rejected for the 27-year-old.

But United have not wavered in their insistence that the England international is going nowhere, and Mourinho has now admitted he has other options as he looks to bolster his attack.

"We have plans B and C," he told reporters. "Don't ask me names. It's difficult to speak about players from other clubs.

"We have the conditions to try to improve our team by bringing in one more player and we are going to try that till the end."Samuel Eto'o has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the past week, having been among a number of players told they can leave Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala this summer.

But Mourinho insists he will not give up his pursuit of Rooney until the transfer deadline, despite United's bullish determination to keep their prized asset.
"You try, because nobody forbids you to try," he added.

"When you think that you'd like to have one player and the market is open and the official bids are not forbidden, official bids are always accepted in an ethical way.

"Of course, the player's owners can do exactly what we did in relation to David Luiz and Barcelona."

    Martino: Messi must accept substitutions

    307066_heroa.jpg

Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino says he will not continually substitute Lionel Messi despite admitting that the Argentine must accept the need to be rested this season.

The new Barca boss replaced Messi during the club's 7-0 thrashing of Levante on the opening day of the season in La Liga and, ahead of their Supercopa clash with Atletico Madrid, the former Newell's Old Boys man says he will not be making a habit of withdrawing the four-time Ballon d'Or winner.

"I think it's a matter of compromise from both parties, we've talked about it and Leo understands what it is about but of course I won't substitute him five times in a row," he told reporters.

"It's about balance. I am the coach and I make the decisions, but I seldom take such drastic action without speaking to my players first.

"It doesn't affect my authority if I change my stance on something. If I have to reconsider a decision, I will."

Barcelona head into the first leg of their Supercopa final, knowing they have beat Atletico Madrid in each of their last six meetings.

Despite the one-sided record though, Martino insists the Catalans will be in for a difficult encounter, with Atletico beating Real Madrid to claim their place in the final, while opening their La Liga campaign with a 3-1 victory on Sunday against Sevilla.

"Obviously we are expected to win the Supercopa, so we will try to make sure we get the result against Atletico Madrid but it is not guaranteed," he continued.

"Anything can happen over the 180 minutes it is different from the league where we have 38 fixtures over the course of the season."

Shakhter Karagandy 2-0 Celtic: Lennon's men on Champions League brink after shattering defeat

    111949hp2.jpg

Celtic's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League group stage are hanging by a thread after a comprehensive defeat to Shakhter Karagandy in Astana.

Andrei Finonchenko gave the Kazakh champions the lead on 12 minutes, latching onto a monstrous long throw from Gediminas Vicius to poke home.

And Sergey Khizhnichenko headed in a second for the home side 13 minutes from time to leave Neil Lennon's men needing a heroic display when the two sides meet again at Celtic Park in eight days' time.

Lennon made three changes to the side that defeated Aberdeen on Saturday, with Virgil van Dijk making his first start since his close-season move from Eredivisie side Groningen. Mikael Lustig and James Forrest also came into the starting XI.

Viktor Kumykov made 10 changes to the Karagandy team that beat Astana 2-1 on Saturday, and was clearly keen to focus on the team's Champions League aspirations. It was Celtic who made the brighter start, pressurising goalkeeper Alexandr Mokin at corners, although he did make an excellent point-blank save from a Georgios Samaras header.Fraser Forster had been a bystander in the Celtic goal until Karagandy opened the scoring with 12 minutes gone.

The visitors failed to clear their lines from a Vicius long throw and Finonchenko ghosted in between Joe Ledley and Emilio Izaguirre to poke home from close range.

Kris Commons came close to producing a swift response when he unleashed a fierce 25-yard effort that struck the crossbar and bounced on the line before spinning safely into the hands of Mokin.

Karagandy posed a considerable threat in the air and missed a good opportunity to double their advantage when an Aleksandar Simcevic centre was headed off target by Sergei Maliy. And they were nearly punished on the half-hour mark when Samaras glanced a Charlie Mulgrew free-kick from the left-hand side just wide of the far post.

Celtic knew they needed to try and work harder to get a foothold in the game, and should have equalised in the 52nd minute.Izaguirre did well to cut in from the left-hand side, but blazed well over the crossbar on his weaker right foot.

And Celtic should have been level with just under 20 minutes remaining when Forrest timed his run into the box to perfection to meet Izaguirre's curling cross, but he could only head straight at the goalkeeper. That missed proved costly as Karagandy grabbed a second when more poor defending from Vicius' effort led to Khizhnichenko having the simplest of headers from six yards to send the home fans into raptures.

Celtic's hopes now hang by a thread and they will look to overturn the deficit at Celtic Park on August 28.

    Liverpool seal Cissokho loan signing

    307714_heroa.jpg

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Aly Cissokho from Valencia on a season-long loan deal, subject to the completion of paperwork.

The former Lyon full-back will take the No.20 shirt at Anfield and becomes the club's fifth signing of the summer with the likes of Iago Aspas, Luis Alberto, Simon Mignolet and Kolo Toure all having arrived earlier in the window.

Speaking to the club's official website, Cissokho said: "I'm very happy to be here. I think we have a great team and great fans and together we can achieve big things.

"It's going to be a great experience to be able to rub shoulders with the club's top-quality players. I have experience in the game, but coming here there will still be lots of things to learn and discover as I work with everyone every day.

"I can learn from my new manager, get to know the new style of play here, familiarise myself with different opposition teams and learn the language.

"It's going to be a great experience for me, and of course playing for the club for the first time is something I'm excited about."

    Zabaleta predicts open title race

    307655_heroa.jpg

Pablo Zabaleta insists this season's Premier League title race is not exclusively between Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea. The City defender believes Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal are also all serious contenders to United's crown.

Zabaleta, fresh from signing a new four-year deal earlier in the day, was part of the City side that thrashed Newcastle United 4-0 on Monday to go top following the opening round of fixtures.

With City, champions United and Chelsea occupying three of the top four places in the fledgling Premier League table, neutrals could be forgiven for expecting the usual suspects to dominate from now until May.But Zabaleta has dismissed this theory. "People say there are just three teams in the title race but that’s not true," said the 28-year-old.

"Liverpool have improved and play attractive football, though a lot will depend on what happens with Luis Suarez, and there is also Arsenal and Spurs."The season has only just begun. It's going to be a very interesting season."

City caught the eye on Monday with a ruthless attacking performance. Goals from David Silva, Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri ensured Manuel Pellegrini's tenure began with an emphatic win after he succeeded Roberto Mancini. Zabaleta added: "We played with a high intensity and I think we were good value for our victory.

"We know how the manager wants us to play and the communication has been excellent during pre-season so it was a good start and it was important to begin as well as possible."

:sorry:Oxlade-Chamberlain ruled out for three months with knee injury

    307681_heroa.jpg

Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been ruled out for three months with medial knee ligament damage, Goal can reveal.

The club's medical team have received the results of the scan the England international had on his injured left knee on Monday.

Goal understands it showed that Oxlade-Chamberlain has strained his medial ligaments and the doctors expect he will be out until mid-to-late November.

The news represents a further blow to manager Arsene Wenger, who has already lost skipper Thomas Vermaelen (back), vice-captain Mikel Arteta (thigh) and Abou Diaby (knee) to lengthy absences.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was carried off at Emirates Stadium last Saturday following a collision with Aston Villa's Antonio Luna during the 3-1 defeat.

Wenger admitted afterwards that it looked to be a "bad injury" but the extent of the damage could not be fully assessed until the swelling on the midfielder's knee had diminished.

It is a shattering blow for Oxlade-Chamberlain, who had got the nod over Lukas Podolski to start for Arsenal last weekend and had been earmarked for more playing time this season, his third at the club.

It is also a setback for England manager Roy Hodgson, who would have been expected to select the 20-year-old for the crucial World Cup qualifiers in September and October.

Wenger has been forced to step up his efforts in the transfer market following the injuries to Arteta and Oxlade-Chamberlain, and on the back of a summer in which he has failed to make a single senior signing.

Arsenal had a £10m bid rejected by Newcastle for Yohan Cabaye on Monday, and as revealed by Goal, also enquired about Sevilla midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia and made a €7m bid for Schalke right-back Atsuto Uchida.

Wenger is also weighing up whether to offer a one-year contract to Mathieu Flamini, who is training with Arsenal after being released by AC Milan at the end of last season.

Schuster: Casillas should leave Real Madrid

    307068_heroa.jpg

Malaga boss Bernd Schuster has weighed in on the goalkeeping saga at Real Madrid, insisting he would understand it if Iker Casillas were to leave the Santiago Bernabeu side.

The Spain international No.1 was forced to watch from the sidelines yet again as los Blancos opened up their Liga campaign with a 2-1 victory over Betis on Sunday, with Diego Lopez continuing to be preferred in goal following his impressive displays last season since joining the club in January from Sevilla.

And former Madrid boss Schuster can empathise with Casillas' position at the club, even saying he would be unsurprised if the 32-year-old decided to leave the Bernabeu to ensure he is selected for Spain's World Cup side next year.

"I'd understand it if Iker wants to leave," Schuster told Tiki Taka.

"It was impossible to imagine Raul at another club, and it's the same with Iker, but this year there is a World Cup and he cannot afford to spend a year sitting on the bench. He has to play.

"We need to remember that Iker went out of the team because of an injury and the coach replaced him with a substitute. Because of an injury, the player has the right to return to the team.

Casillas was ousted by Lopez while Jose Mourinho was still coach and, despite coming back from a broken hand, was unable to force his way back into the first team following a string of strong displays by his goalkeeping rival.

However, with a new season underway and a new coach in charge of Madrid, Schuster is baffled by the club's decision to keep the saga ongoing and believes Casillas should be reinstated as first-choice shot-stopper.

"Being the Madrid goalkeeper is a very difficult job and Iker is who he is, and a player as good as him cannot afford to be in a situation like this one," he added.

"I don't understand it. Even though there is a lot of competition, which is a good thing, Iker needs to be playing.

"The reason it's a problem is that, as we saw last year, this isn't any old player. We have already started discussing this issue this season and it dominated the last few months of Mourinho's tenure, it was unbelievable, it's not good for the team nor for Iker.

"It has surprised me that this situation has been allowed to rumble on, the club needs to find a proper solution."

:(Manchester United's Baines and Fellaini bid a waste of time, insists Martinez

    307659_heroa.jpg

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has labelled Manchester United's double bid for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines a "waste of time."

The Goodison Park club slammed a "derisory" and "insulting" offer from the Premier League champions for two of their players - widely believed to be Fellaini and Baines - in a statement on Monday. And Martinez has revealed his frustration at the bid, indicating that it was never entertained as a serious proposition by the Everton hierarchy. "It's been well documented what happened with the transfer speculation, that's been dealt with and it was all a little bit of a waste of time, time I don't want the players to waste," the Spaniard toldthe club's official website.

"I think the situation is very clear. I think as a football club we will always keep our fans informed. I'm not a big believer in having the window open while the games are starting."When there is something to tell our fans we will do that, they'll be the first ones to know if there are any players coming in or any players going out.

"The players have had the demands of international football and then they started the league with a lot of travelling, so obviously you can imagine it's been important these past few days that we can get them recovered, regenerate them in the right manner and get them ready for the next game."

Martinez - who took over from David Moyes in the close-season - saw his team, including Fellaini and Baines, earn a 2-2 draw at Norwich in their Premier League opener on Saturday.

Paulinho eager for Bale to stay at Tottenham

    307632_heroa.jpg

Tottenham midfielder Paulinho wants Gareth Bale to remain at the club, but admits that he is unsure over the Welshman's plans.Real Madrid have been chasing the 24-year-old throughout the close-season, while Bale has been absent from first-team duties with a foot injury.Paulinho, who arrived from Corinthians in July, is eager for the Wales international to commit himself to the London side - but does not know if he will.

"I sincerely don't know [if Bale will stay], but I think this is something more private for Bale, he doesn't tell me anything," the Brazilian told Fox Sports Brazil.
"But I hope he continues with us, so that he can help us. He is a great player and achieved great stats last season, so I hope he stays with us."

Paulinho, a club-record signing prior to the arrival of Roberto Soldado, made his Tottenham debut in the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday.

    Osvaldo plays down Balotelli comparisons

    307375_heroa.jpg

Southampton's record signing Pablo Osvaldo says he will not make the same mistakes his compatriot Mario Balotelli made in the Premier League.

The former Roma striker joined Maurico Pochettino's side for €17.5 million on Sunday, signing a four-year deal at St Mary's.

And, despite a record of poor discipline in Serie A, namely punching former team-mate Erik Lamela, Osvaldo says he will not become a bad boy like Balotelli.

"I am no angel but I am not a bad person either," he told reporters.

"There were things that happened in the dressing room that should not have come out. They should have been resolved in the dressing room.

"All of the problems coming out Roma were being blamed on me and that was completely unfair. That is why I am very happy I have made the change to Southampton.

"I have spoken to Mario Balotelli but not about the move. He did not have the best of times in the Premier League so I did not want to hear anything negative about England."

Osvaldo could make his Southampton debut against Sunderland on Saturday.

Roma jet in for Lamela talks with Tottenham

    304406_heroa.jpg

Roma officials have travelled to London for talks over the €35 million sale of Erik Lamela to Tottenham, who are also hoping to finalise a deal for Anzhi Makhachkala attacker Willian.

Spurs technical director Franco Baldini was due to meet with Roma's director of football Walter Sabatini in the UK capital on Tuesday for talks over the 21-year-old playmaker.

Negotiations are further down the line with Brazilian forward Willian who is set to undergo a medical in the next 24 hours ahead of a possible €35m switch.

Lamela, who is seen by Tottenham as the ideal replacement for Gareth Bale, is set to be offered a five-year deal worth €76,000-a-week by Spurs, with the Welshman's future at the club still in the balance.

Real Madrid want to sign Bale and are willing to offer a world-record fee worth in the region of €100 million - but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is still holding out for €117m despite the 24-year-old’s desire to move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Sources have told Goal that Lamela is the "absolute priority" should Bale leave and is top of the wishlist of both manager Andre Villas-Boas and Baldini. The Premier League club value him at around €35m.

Baldini knows Lamela well from his time at Roma and the Argentine's future was a major point of discussion when the Italian met Sabatini in London earlier this month.

Spurs have yet to confirm a fee with Anzhi for Willian but Goal understands that they will also pay in the region of €35m for the former Shakhtar Donetsk star.

Liverpool had previously been confident of securing the attacker's signature having lodged a bid of €30 million on Monday, but the player's preference to play under Villas-Boas has seen the Reds overtaken by Spurs.
