Arsene Wenger has promised there will be new arrivals at Arsenal

    177051641-1-_2990978.jpg

Arsene Wenger has promised there will be new arrivals at the Emirates after Arsenal all-but guaranteed their place in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League.Wenger will now turn his attention to the transfer market after guiding his side to a 3-0 first-leg win over Fenerbahce in Turkey on Wednesday night.

The Gunners boss, who missed out on the signing of Gonzalo Higuain earlier this summer, feels the transfer market will now kick-start, but ruled out making an improved bid for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.

"(There is) absolutely no chance of that," said Wenger when asked about Suarez.Wenger, though, stressed he was looking to strengthen, especially in midfield, with Mikel Arteta and Abou Diaby both also sidelined.

Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye and Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema are reported targets for the Gunners."We tried to bring one in, but we are working on that. You have to understand there is still a long way to go," added Wenger.

"The transfer market starts for me now and a lot of activity will happen between now and September 2."From August 21 until September 2 you have 12 days, so a lot will happen. It starts now.

"It is like a poker game. People hold their cards as long as possible and see what is happening out there. In the end, they go for decisions."

Spurs boss AVB denies Gareth Bale transfer to Real Madrid is a done deal

    Wales-v-Republic-of-Ireland-Gareth-Bale-pa_2987165.jpg

Andre Villas-Boas has denied that a deal has been agreed for the record sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.Reports suggest Bale is closing in on a world-record transfer to the nine-time European champions, but Villas-Boas says that is not the case."That is not true," the Tottenham manager said ahead of the Europa League play-off against Dinamo Tbilisi.

The north London club would not comment, however, on claims that technical director Franco Baldini is in the Spanish capital for talks over Bale's future but Sky Sports' Spanish football expert Guillem Balague believes an announcement confirming the deal is imminent and that the fine detail has already been agreed.Bale will sit out the first leg of Tottenham's Europa League play-off on Thursday officially because of a foot injury.

While Bale has been recovering, Tottenham have spent £60million on four new signings and they could shell out that same figure over the next two days to land Willian and Erik Lamela.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to the reasoning behind the record splurge by Daniel Levy. One is that he wants to bring the stellar signings in to persuade Bale to stay and the other is that the chairman is already spending the world-record fee the Londoners would receive if the Welshman left for the Bernabeu.Villas-Boas was asked which one was the case and was reluctant to say that the new signings had been bought in order to try to tempt Bale to stay.

"Ideally we want to keep everyone to make us stronger - that is the ultimate objective of the club," the Spurs manager said."In the end, anything can happen. We are dragging ourselves into the last weeks of transfer activity and it can become very, very frantic."

Spurs expect to complete the signing of Willian by the time they return from Georgia while there is excitement among supporters about the prospect of Argentinian midfielder Lamela and Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao also joining the club.

Out of respect to the clubs they belong to, Villas-Boas would not go into detail about Tottenham's pursuit of the trio, but he did concede talks had begun with Anzhi over the signing of Willian."I can confirm there is an interest in the player and conversations (have taken place)," the Portuguese said."What we are building is a very, very strong side for the future, alongside massive investment in the structures of the club."

The Tottenham manager has vowed to do all he can to win the Europa League this season, even though his squad was stretched thin last season by fighting on two fronts."Last season we prioritised both competitions," the Tottenham boss said. "It's the same objective this year.

"We have approached this competition very seriously. We set out a good example that it was possible to play Thursday evenings and Sundays with the same team mostly and we had good success with results in fixtures after the Europa League in the Premier League, so the focus will be exactly the same."
Tbilisi, 14-time domestic champions, are huge underdogs for this evening's first leg.

Their squad is made up mostly of local players with the odd foreign import but club officials expect the Dinamo Arena to be close to its 54,000 capacity if the rain holds off, and Villas-Boas is wary of underestimating the opposition.
He added: "This play-off is an extremely difficult play-off. It can knock you out even before a taste of it has happened so we will pick a strong team."

No new Manchester United bids for Marouane Fellaini or Leighton Baines, say Everton

    1000x5857.jpg

Roberto Martinez says Everton have received no further bids from Manchester United for Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini. The Red Devils failed with a joint £28million bid for the pair last week, which the Toffees dubbed ‘insulting and derisory’.

It had been reported that United are ready to return with an increased offer, but Martinez insists that, as of yet, it’s all quiet on the transfer front.

Martinez added: ‘We need to make sure before the close of the window we are as strong as we can be.‘We have no intention of cashing in on any players.’The Spaniard also vowed too keep fans up to date with any further developments.

Benzema & Di Maria on Wenger's shortlist after giving up on Suarez

    benzema_di_maria-423891.jpg

After Arsenal put one foot in the Champions League group stage with their 3-0 away win against Fenerbahce, Wenger is turning his attentions to activity in the transfer market.Express Sport understands that the Gunners' immediate target is Real striker Benzema - with a £40million bid in the offing.

However, winger Di Maria is also on the Frenchman's radar, after claiming that "a lot will happen" at the Emirates before the window shuts on September 2.According to BBC Sport, Arsenal could spend as much as £100m in the next two weeks.

But Wenger has given up on attempts to lure Luis Suarez away from Liverpool, after meeting heavy resistance from Anfield."There is absolutely no chance of that," Wenger said of the possibility he could revive a deal for the Uruguayan after two failed bids already this summer.

However, Arsenal are readying a big-money double offer to tempt Real to part with Benzema and Di Maria - and the Spanish giants could be ready to listen as they look to gather the funds necessary to push through a world record deal for Gareth Bale.Benzema is valued at £40m by Arsenal, while Di Maria is worth around £25m.

"The transfer market starts for me now and a lot of activity will happen between now and September 2," said Wenger.Meanwhile, Arsenal have been warned they will need to significantly raise their £4m bid if they are to stand a chance of landing Valencia shot stopper Vicente Guaita - rated at £25m by the La Liga outfit.

Real Madrid close to Bale deal

    19422.jpg

Real Madrid have moved closer to completing the signing of Gareth Bale from Tottenham, with Franco Baldini in the Spanish capital to thrash out a deal.Spurs’ director of football is reported to be attempting to include Fabio Coentrao as part of the transfer which would see the 24-year-old Wales international leave White Hart Lane.

Baldini has already overseen a number of new signings arriving at Tottenham this summer, with the club believed to have agreed a deal in principle for the sale of Bale a fortnight ago.

And it is now reported that the two parties are at the advanced stage of negotiations regarding an agreement which would see Bale move for a world-record transfer fee.Willian undertook a medical at the club on Wednesday ahead of a club record transfer, while Roberto Soldado, Paulinho, Nacer Chadli and Etienee Capoue have all been added to Andre Villas-Boas’ squad.

Meanwhile, hype over the return of former Real Madrid hero Raul Gonzalez dominated Thursday morning's Spanish press, with AS and Marca providing blanket coverage of Thursday’s ‘Trofeo Bernabeu’ exhibition game, in which the 36-year-old will play 45 minutes for Madrid and the other half for his current team -- Al Sadd of Qatar.

Fans in the Spanish capital were, apparently, not concentrating on the arrival of a new attacking superstar, but preparing to honour the forward who left the Bernabeu without a proper goodbye when he surprisingly moved to Schalke three summers ago.Bale’s potential move was covered in the Madrid-based press, but most prominently because reporters had asked Raul for his thoughts on it during Wednesday afternoon’s press conference to promote the exhibition game.

"Bale is a player who can make the difference, he has done that in recent seasons," Raul kindly answered. "Behind Cristiano [Ronaldo] and [Leo] Messi he is the player pushing up the most. It seems Madrid want him and will make a big effort to get him. If it happens everyone at the club will be delighted."
Asked if he thought Tottenham were overvaluing the Welsh international, Raul was again characteristically diplomatic.

"You do not know," he said. "It has to do with performances. Cristiano’s [fee] seemed a lot, and now it looks small beside what he has done. The market is what it is. If they reach an agreement the price will be ‘X’, and then we will see if it was worth it. Other times big figures were paid and the performance did not come. You have to wait to see if it happens and then his performance."

Elsewhere Marca waited until page 18 [it had been page 20 the morning before] for a story without any attributed quotes that claimed both the Madrid and Spurs dressing-rooms expected the transfer to go through before the end of August, but that Bale himself was getting worried by the length of time it was taking. Coentrao’s reported €4 million a year salary demands were suggested as a possible sticking point.

Many observers in both London and Madrid had assumed that Tottenham’s busy recent few days, with deals for both Anzhi Makhachkala creator Willian and Roma schemer Erik Lamela being put in place, was proof the Premier League club was already spending the money it would receive from Madrid for Bale.

Villas-Boas told reporters on Wednesday evening, while travelling ahead of his side’s Europa League play-off first leg at Georgian side Dinamo Tbilisi, said that "anything can happen" when asked a deal being struck.

"Ideally, we want to keep everyone to make us stronger -- that is the ultimate objective of the club," Villas-Boas said. "In the end, anything can happen. We are dragging ourselves into the last weeks of transfer activity, and it can become very, very frantic.''

Hamsik fully committed to Napoli - agent

    308368_heroa.jpg

Marek Hamsik is happy to remain at Napoli despite the recent overhaul that has taken place at the club, his agent has said. The Partenopei have lost stars such as Ezequiel Lavezzi and Edinson Cavani in the last two seasons, while former coach Walter Mazzarri left to take over at Inter in May.

Mazzarri has since been replaced by Rafael Benitez, and the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Jose Callejon and Dries Mertens have been brought in to reinforce the club's forward line. However, the Slovakia international penned a contract extension earlier in the month to keep him at the Stadio San Paolo until 2018, and Hamsik's represenative Juraj Venglos has reiterated the 26-year-old is committed to Napoli.

"The boy is happy to play for Napoli and he will remain with the Azzurri for many more years to come," Venglos to Radio CRC."He's married the project here by renewing his contract and he knows that the team continues to grow year by year.

"They are now back in the Champions League and he’s very happy about that.
"The squad has been reinforced with a lot of players from abroad, but it won't be easy. But Marek is happy with new boss Rafael Benitez and there is already a good understanding with Gonzalo Higuain."

West Brom sign Sinclair from Manchester City on season-long loan

    213343_heroa.jpg

West Brom have signed Scott Sinclair from Manchester City on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent deal.

The 24-year-old, who signed for City in August 2012, made just 11 Premier League appearances under Roberto Mancini last term.

Clarke is buoyed by the arrival of Sinclair and believes the winger bolsters his attacking options this season.

“Scott understands he needs to play football and it will be good to work with him again,” Clarke told the club's official website.

“We’re delighted he feels this is the right club for him at this stage of his career.

“He is the type of player we were missing from the squad. He is a pure winger, who is quick, direct and scores goals – he has proven that over his career.

“He can play off the right or left and improves our attacking options. I know him well and he is a good person, who I know is 100 per cent committed to our cause.

“He is frustrated he did not get the chances to play at Man City last season and hopefully he will take those frustrations out on Premier League defenders this season.”

Neymar thrilled with first Barca goal

    308176_heroa.jpg

Barcelona star Neymar was delighted to have netted his first goal for the club after coming off the bench to equalise against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

The Brazilian was once again consigned to a starting place amongst the substitutes, but found the net almost immediately after entering the fray on the hour.

The 21-year-old headed home a Dani Alves cross to cancel out David Villa’s opener at the Vicente Calderon, and spoke of his delight at opening his account for the Blaugrana.

“I'm thrilled to have scored my first goal," he told AS. “I’m happy because I came on and was able to help the team in a difficult situation.

“Atletico are a strong side, and they showed that again in this match. It’s a good result and now we have to do the job at home.”
