Abidal: Alves offered me his liver

    269953_heroa.jpg

Eric Abidal has revealed that good friend and ex-Barcelona team-mate Dani Alves offered to give him his liver prior to his transplant.

It is widely known that the pair built up a special friendship during their time at Camp Nou and the Brazilian has ditched his usual shirt number to don Abidal’s old number 22 this season, as a mark of loyalty to his close companion.

But the Frenchman brought to light just how deep their friendship is when he disclosed the touching gesture made by Alves during his treatment.

“My relationship with Dani goes much further than him taking my old No.22 shirt,” Abidal told Catalunya Radio.

“When I had to undergo surgery, he offered to donate his liver.

“Of course, it’s completely out of the question because he is a professional footballer. Our relationship goes much deeper than friendship.”

The Monaco captain also brought to light attempts by Pep Guardiola to take him to Germany and join him at Bayern Munich, only for the European champions obstructed any move based on medical grounds.

“Guardiola wanted me to join him at Bayern, I won’t deny that,” confessed the 34-year-old.

“What happened is that it’s not really up to him. It’s a complicated matter and more so because of my health issues.

“Bayern’s directors and medical staff didn’t want to take that risk which I fully understand. But I understood the gesture perfectly.”

Soldado praises Eriksen's swift adaptation at Tottenham

    317031_heroa.jpg

Tottenham striker Roberto Soldado has praised Christian Eriksen's swift adaptation to the Premier League.

The Denmark international, who was signed from Ajax for €14 million in the summer transfer window, assisted Gylfi Sigurdsson's opening goal against Norwich City and made an impressive contribution on his debut in Tottenham's 2-0 victory at White Hart Lane.

Soldado believes the 21-year-old will become a significant part of Andre Villas-Boas' attacking set-up and says the midfielder will enhance the ability of his team-mates.

"He is a brilliant player. It's incredible that he has got up to this level already in his first game in English football," Soldado said.

"It's great for him, for the team. He is a player who is capable of improving all of us.

"He is a player that makes everything look easy and that's good for us. Today [Saturday] he made the difference, he's a player that can support us in everything we do. He can offer us a lot of passes to everyone who plays in attack for Spurs."

Bale showed how good he is - Illarramendi

    317459_heroa.jpg

Asier Illarramendi lauded the performance of his new team-mate Gareth Bale after the winger scored on his first start for Real Madrid.

The Spain Under-21 international was making his debut alongside the world’s most expensive footballer as los Blancos took on Villarreal but all eyes were on the former Tottenham man and Illarramendi was happy to point out why.

“He is a great player and important for us,” the 23-year-old told the Real Madrid website.

“He scored on his debut and showed just how good he is.”

Illarramendi went on to add that he was delighted to get some time on the pitch after overcoming the injury problems that have plagued him since his arrival at the Bernabeu, but he also admitted he is still some way off match sharpness.

“It was tough when I got injured. I came and two weeks later I was injured. I’ve been out for two months and now I’m back I’m very happy," he added.

“I haven’t played for a while and it was clear I’m lacking that spark. But I’ll gain the rhythm of training sessions and the matches.”

Boateng accepts Sammer's criticism of Bayern

    315243_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng has accepted club director Matthias Sammer's criticism for the way the side have performed since the appointment of Pep Guardiola.

Bayern secured a 2-0 victory against Hannover on Saturday to record their fourth victory out of five in the Bundesliga this season but, that did not prevent Sammer from slamming the players' effort.

Boateng admits die Roten have not reached the heights that saw them grab an unprecedented German treble under Jupp Heynckes last season.

"I think he’s right [to criticise]," Boateng told the club's official website. "Matthias Sammer doesn't say anything that isn't of value.

"I think the team has to accept the criticism, because we have a lot of games and need to concentrate on those."

Bayern begin the defence of their Champions League crown on Tuesday against CSKA Moscow.

The German champions are in Group D alongside CSKA, Manchester City and Viktoria Plzen but the 25-year-old says it is far too early to be talking about retaining their title and, in the process, becoming the first club to do so.

"As always, we want to go as far as we can in the competition. It’s pivotal for us to make a good start," he added.

"We would of course love to be the first team to achieve it. However, we’re at the start of the season and can't afford to think that far yet.

"We take each game as it comes. At the moment it’s important to make a good start to the group phase."

Ronaldo: Manchester is my past, Madrid is my home

Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo has ended any speculation that he could be on his way back to Manchester United by signing a new three-year extension to his contract which will keep him at the club until 2018.

Goal exclusively revealed back in June that los Blancos planned to renew Ronaldo's deal following the successful completion of signing Gareth Bale from Tottenham this summer.

Ronaldo, who has scored 203 goals in as many games since his €94 million move from Old Trafford in 2009, insists he has no intention of leaving the Santiago Bernabeu.

"I will be honest with you. Everyone knows I was in Manchester for six years, they gave me many things, and I don't forget that," he told reporters.

"But Manchester is the past, now it's Madrid. This is my home, my family's here, I'm really happy here.

"I respect the clubs who knocked on the door to ask about me, but they always knew my only goal was to be here and to play at this club, maybe until the end of my career.

"Nobody knows the future, but I'm going to be here for five more years and I just want to win trophies for this club. I try to do my best, like always."

Ronaldo's future at the club was in doubt when the forward publicly revealed he was "sad" and rumours suggested that he was not happy with the support he was receiving from the club.

The 28-year-old says it is all forgotten about now and he is targeting another 200 goals for Madrid in the next five years.

"We have our good and bad days. That day [last season after Granada game] I was a bit sad, something that can happen more times during the season," he added.

"It's normal and human. Probably I shouldn't have said that in public, but I'm human and I make my own mistakes. It's in the past though. I feel good now and I want to stay in this club for many years.

"I'm an ambitious person and I don't want to set any limit. I'm going to try to score 200 more goals in the next four or five years here. It's not the most important thing, but I'm going to try it.

"Leaving Real Madrid was something I could think about. I wanted to stay at this club, the best in the world in my opinion. If you leave Real Madrid, there is not another destination, because you are already on the top."

The new deal, which will reportedly see Ronaldo become the highest paid player in La Liga with a net salary of €17m, was already being negotiated at the end of last season, the Portuguese star revealed and he insists it is not about the money.

"We have an agreement since the end of the last season, but we've made it concrete now," he added.

"The president gave me his word and I gave him mine. This is something I always wanted. The feeling I had was to stay at this club and it didn't took long to make the decision, at least for me.

"Being the best paid in the world was not the main thing. There are many things more important that just money. I'm not going to lie to you: it's important, but not the priority. There is a winning project, being at the best team in the world, the one that signs the best players.

"This club has enough size to win more Champions Leagues, more Ligas, more Copas... Money was not a big deal. Being the first one, the second one or the third one is not important, because I feel great."

Liverpool boss Rodgers reveals Reina talks

    297676_heroa.jpg

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed he spoke to Pepe Reina about his plans to sign another goalkeeper this summer.

The Spaniard made 285 appearances during nine seasons as the club's first choice shot-stopper, before linking up with former boss Rafa Benitez on a season-long loan at Napoli.

And after Reina backtracked on claims that he was forced out of the club, Rodgers has revealed he met with the 31-year-old to explain he planned to give him some competition in goal.

"It wasn't anything underhand," Rodgers told the Telegraph. "It was looking into his eye and telling him he was a very good keeper but in order to be the best he can be and for us to be the best, I need to bring in another one who would be equal number one.

"He accepted that at the time, that was something he felt was needed also.

"Obviously here at the club we then have to consider the wages, as there is a financial implication too. So it was deemed through both parties that it was best for him to move on.

"As I said, I was comfortable enough to let it happen. He wanted to go and play, you have to consider that, it is World Cup year as well. He wanted to be a number one somewhere.

"We did everything we could to support him to be the best he could be. There was no rush for me to move Pepe out but I felt he needed competition so I had to bring in someone."

Rodgers has already been impressed by new No.1 choice Simon Mignolet, who was signed for £9 million from Sunderland during the summer transfer window.

"I’d seen him over the last few years, he’s adapted to the Premier League. He is a brilliant shot-stopper," the Reds boss added.

"John Achterberg, our Dutch goalkeeping coach, has been monitoring him for years.

"You see his presence, he is good with his feet, that is important, it is one of the big things I look for in my goalkeeper."

Southampton 0-0 West Ham: Jaaskelainen denies Saints home win

    317492hp2.jpg

Jussi Jaaskelainen rolled back the years with a series of stunning saves as West Ham held Southampton to a 0-0 draw at St Mary's.

The home side created the better chances throughout the 90 minutes, but were unable to find a way past the impressive 38-year-old.

Dani Osvaldo was the first to be frustrated by the Finn in the first half when the veteran goalkeeper denied him with a point-blank save.

Southampton continued to look the more likely after the break with Rickie Lambert hitting the post, while Jaaskelainen reacted well to a half-volley from Morgan Schneiderlin.

Mauricio Pochettino handed starts to Nathaniel Clyne and Jay Rodriguez, while Lambert made his 200th appearance for Southampton.

Ravel Morrison made his first Premier League start for Sam Allardyce's side at the expense of Stewart Downing, who missed out with a leg injury.

After a tepid opening it was West Ham who came closest to making the breakthrough in the seventh minute.

Mohamed Diame collected the ball on the right-hand side of the box and bustled past Luke Shaw before forcing Artur Boruc to parry away his drilled effort at the near post.

Osvaldo was then denied his first Premier League goal when he drew a superb point-blank save from Jaaskelainen after good work from Rodriguez to centre from the left.

With both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances, Lambert will feel he could have done better in the 23rd minute when his attempted pass to Osvaldo deflected back into his path on the edge of the area. However, his first-time volley was tame and easily held by Jaaskelainen.

Ten minutes later, Schneiderlin irked the West Ham players with a late lunge on Diame. The midfielder's challenge was mistimed and he was perhaps lucky to escape punishment.

Morrison nearly marked his first Premier League start with a goal five minutes before half-time, but his 20-yard effort curled wide.

Southampton almost made the ideal start to the second half in the 48th minute when Victor Wanyama's dipping half-volley was tipped over the crossbar.

Lambert came closest to opening the scoring from the resulting corner when he headed Adam Lallana's delivery against the post.

The hosts continued to look the more likely to break the deadlock, and Schneiderlin's close-range effort rebounded into the air where Osvaldo tried an audacious overhead kick that was headed away by Winston Reid.

Jaaskelainen once more came to West Ham's rescue in the 67th minute. The lively Rodriguez crossed from the right and Schneiderlin's half-volley forced the goalkeeper into a superb reaction save to his left.

Lambert was the next to be thwarted by the West Ham stopper.

Rodriguez sprinted through the middle and laid into the path of the England international, who opened up to a curl his effort towards the far corner where Jaaskelainen produced another tremendous save. West Ham almost made Southampton pay for their profligacy when a scramble in the area saw the ball fall to the unmarked James Collins but the centre-back blazed over the bar from eight yards.

Ronaldo is a 'more complete' player than Messi, says Mendes

    316940_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo is a more complete player than Barcelona attacker Lionel Messi, according to Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes.

The 28-year-old signed a new five-year deal at Real Madrid to become the highest paid player in the world on Sunday, and Mendes believes he is far better than Messi, who has four Ballons d'Or, and Neymar, who joined Barca this summer.

Cristiano Ronaldo is “a more complete player and better than Leo Messi," he told O Globo.

"With all due respect to Neymar, who’s a great footballer, there’s no way he is as good as Ronaldo.

"But you have to give due credit to a player who, in the last four years, has scored a goal a game for Real Madrid."

Mendes, who is also an agent for Jose Mourinho and Radamel Falcao among others, says Barcelona are the best team in history.

"Barcelona is the best team of all time, and is the base of the Spanish national team," he continued.

"Their players have more opportunities to score. Cristiano is playing for a team that is one thing when he’s there and quite another when he isn’t. It’s a tough role to play."

Fellaini thanks Manchester United fans after 'fantastic' debut

    316999_heroa.jpg

Marouane Fellaini has thanked the Manchester United fans for their support during his "fantastic" debut against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Belgium international, who moved to Old Trafford from Everton on deadline day, replaced Anderson in the 62nd minute to help United see out a comfortable 2-0 victory.

Fellaini received an impressive ovation from the home fans and the 25-year-old was keen to acknowledge his fantastic welcome after the game.

"It was a fantastic debut and we won, which was most important," he told MUTV. "I was both nervous and excited. I thought I had to play my game and with my quality.

"I would like to say thank you to the supporters, it was good for me. Every time I will give my maximum for the club and for my team-mates.

"It was a good win, not hard or easy, just a good win. Manchester United want to win every game and we won today so it was good for our confidence ahead of the next game - because the next game is a big game, it is a Champions League game."

David Moyes was pleased Fellaini could make his bow and protect Robin van Persie's opening goal, before Wayne Rooney sealed the three points in injury time.

"I thought Fellaini played well today, hopefully all the supporters saw what he can do," the United boss added.

"We were delighted he got on, I wanted him to win the ball for us, give it to our good players so we could go and score goals.

"He’s more than that, but I thought today he came on and calmed it down when we were only winning 1-0. I had to make sure, even though they had ten men, that we didn’t do anything stupid and we didn’t."

Next up for the Premier League champions is a visit from Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday night for their Champions League Group A opener.

Perez: Ronaldo is a Madrid legend

    317455_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez says Cristiano Ronaldo is a club legend and has made comparisons with him and Alfredo Di Stefano.

The Portugal striker signed a new three-year deal with los Blancos, which will keep him at the club until 2018 following a move to the Spanish capital from Manchester United in 2009.

Perez was delighted to extend the 28-year-old's contract and compared him with Madrid honourary club president and five-time European Cup winner Di Stefano.

"Those who saw Di Stefano now look at Ronaldo and know he is part of this great dynasty," Perez told reporters.

"Real Madrid's history is made legendary because of people like Cristiano. Today is a wonderful day for Real Madrid and every supporter, because the best player knows this will be his home forever.

"These supporters are the most demanding ones, but also the ones who love him the most. Cristiano is and will always be a 'madridista'.

"His statistics are overwhelming: 203 goals in 203 games with Real Madrid. There are no preceding numbers like those.

"Cristiano is looking for new challenges now. He still has many goals to score and lots of titles to celebrate. Santiago Bernabeu taught us this club has to always to have the best players ... and we have the best one."
