Bale agents bag stunning €12m from Real Madrid

    312567_heroa.jpg

Gareth Bale joined a small elite of mega-rich sportsmen when he completed his world-record €100 million transfer to Real Madrid earlier this month.

But a sizeable portion of the 24-year-old’s monstrous €358,000-a-week wages will go to the management firm who made the deal happen.

The Sweeper has learned that the Stellar Group earned €12m from the move as part of the contract the company signed with Real Madrid back in May to facilitate the transfer.

It is understood that the two parties negotiated a ‘duality agreement’, a typical contract in marquee transfers, with the buying club paying roughly half of the agents’ costs and the player himself the remaining 50 per cent out through his signing-on fee and salary.

Having signed a six-year contract worth €111m over the entirety of the agreement, Bale will have to hand over around five per cent to Stellar Group, who have offices in Britain, Africa and South America and represent 500 sportsmen and women from across the globe.

The principal negotiators in the deal were Stellar chairman Jonathan Barnett and David Manasseh, who has been Bale’s agent since he was 16.

Another Stellar employee who is almost a permanent fixture at Bale’s side is his minder and fixer Joshua Barnett, son of Jonathan, who has also moved to Madrid on a permanent basis, where he will live close to the player, his girlfriend Emma and daughter Alba Violet.

The timing of the deal, which Barnett senior, 63, claimed “was the most rewarding one I have had the pleasure of negotiating” is particularly welcome for Stellar, who are known to spare no expenses when it comes to doing business, with a private jet on stand-by for their blue-chip clients.

    Manchester United target Shaw move

    303751_heroa.jpg

Manchester United are determined to win the race to sign Southampton starlet Luke Shaw.

The 18-year-old left-back has attracted interest from both Arsenal and Chelsea since making his Saints debut aged 16 in January 2012, but the Premier League champions feel they can steal a march on their rivals and attract him to Old Trafford.

Shaw, who has a price tag of around £12 million, signed a new five-year contract at St Mary's in July after making his intentions to commit his future to Saints clear last January.

However, after scouting the youngster on a number of occasions over the past 12 months, United are confident that an early deal can be struck with Southampton, whose highly-lauded academy system kickstarted the careers of Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gareth Bale in recent years.

Old Trafford officials moved similarly quickly to sign Wilfried Zaha last January before completing his £15m move in the summer, with Sir Alex Ferguson wary of missing out on the youngster to a major rival.

And United are confident of repeating the trick with Shaw, who would be seen as the long-term replacement to 32-year-old Patice Evra at left-back, following the club's failed attempt to sign Leighton Baines this summer, plus David Moyes' concerns over the consistency of Alexander Buttner and Fabio da Silva.

The United boss confirmed on Friday that the club failed in a double swoop for both Baines and Marouane Fellaini from Everton, with only the Belgian arriving for £27.5m.

Diego Lopez: We must support Casillas

    297661_heroa.jpg

Diego Lopez has stressed that Iker Casillas has his full support after Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti confirmed he will restore the Spain No.1 to the team against Galatasaray.

Lopez was once more preferred for los Merengues' 2-2 draw with Villarreal on Saturday and the former Sevilla man continued his excellent run of form as Casillas watched on from the bench.Ancelotti has already made it clear he will hand the World Cup-winner his first start of the season in Madrid's Champions League opener on Tuesday, but Lopez insists he has no qualms over the decision.

"Maximum respect to the coach, who is the decision maker," the 31-year-old told Canal+.

"Now it's time to support Iker. The coach assesses who should play and we have to do our job. Competition is very good and the team is going to benefit."There is much talk and what we have to do is to respect and play every game that the coach gives us. I'm not debating everything that exists around it. I'm sorry that there are many different opinions, but I cannot do anything. I focus on my work and fight for a spot. I will do so until the end."

Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo both scored as Madrid were held by the Yellow Submarine, as Cani and Giovani dos Santos brought the visitors' 100 per cent record this season to and end.

Despite the result, Lopez admitted the match was the most emotional he has ever been part of as he returned to the club where he played more than 200 games between 2007 and 2012.

"It was the most emotional match of my career," he revealed."I spent five wonderful years at Villarreal and it will always be in my heart."

'Outstanding' Low deserves new contract - Netzer

    314563_heroa.jpg

Joachim Low deserves to be given a new Germany contract despite failing to secure international silverware, according to Gunter Netzer.

The former Real Madrid playmaker, who lifted the World Cup with the Nationalelf in 1974, believes Germany's current standing at the top of global football owes much to Low's work in recent years and insists he should be rewarded for his efforts should his side seal qualification for Brazil 2014.

"Over the years, Low has been proven to be an outstanding trainer and developer. The fact that Germany plays such an important role in world football should be merited to Low," Netzer wrote in Bild.

"Therefore, it is only logical that we now extend the contract with him.

"Also, in [World Cup] 2010, our team came to global recognition as we scored the most goals without winning the title. That appearance all but confirmed Low's capabilities as a coach. Similarly, in 2014, Germany are one of the favourites and are always in a position to become world champions."

However, the 69-year-old believes the current Germany defence has room for improvement and has backed calls to see Mats Hummels dropped in favour of Jerome Boateng.

"As coaches, we have learned that it is essential in international football to halt the attack of the enemy early and to try to retain the ball," he continued.

"It is also important that the defenders show their individual class and do not only point out the errors happening in attack.

"Mats Hummels is currently going through a weaker phase. But the criticism after his last performance was justified. Therefore, it is logical that Low gives Hummels' competitor Jerome Boateng a chance. He has shown improvement this season at Bayern, and has put in good performances."

Bayern are hiding behind Guardiola, fumes Sammer
    295641_heroa.jpg

Matthias Sammer has hit out at Bayern Munich's early-season form, claiming the players are hiding behind the appointment of Pep Guardiola. The Bavarians earned a 2-0 home win over Hannover on Saturday through second-half goals from Mario Mandzukic and Franck Ribery, but remain two points behind Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.

With Bayern having lost the DFL-Supercup to BVB already this term, Sammer has warned the Roten stars to improve their work ethic on the pitch rather than hand all responsibility for results to their new coach.

"We have to get going," the 46-year-old fumed in an interview with Bild.
"It's so lethargic and it cannot go on. We need to get out of the comfort zone.
"In the last 14 months we have earned five titles. Franck Ribery is European Footballer of the Year and maybe he'll even get the Ballon d’Or.

"This the rosy impression. And I do not like. We need to think about about a few things and the basic elements of emotion and passion. We emotionalize nothing. We put the leg-work in, but that's not enough.

"We're back to zero, we have a new coach. Every day it goes: Pep here, Pep there, Pep up, Pep down. And then we know it so well that we all start saying: 'Oh man, we have a bit less responsibility - it's all him.' And we hide."

Bayern now have 13 points from their opening five league games and begin their Champions League defence against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday.

Swansea 2-2 Liverpool: Shelvey hero and villain in topsy-turvy match

    317962hp2.jpg

Jonjo Shelvey had a hand in all four goals as his former club Liverpool returned to top spot with a 2-2 draw against Swansea on Monday.

Shelvey scored the first after just two minutes before twice giving the ball away for Daniel Sturridge and Victor Moses to score and put Liverpool ahead at the break.

However, the midfielder atoned for his earlier errors, heading into the path of Michu to equalise after 63 minutes as Liverpool dropped points for the first time this season.

Brendan Rodgers handed debuts to two of his deadline-day acquisitions, with Mamadou Sakho and Moses both making their Liverpool bows.

For Swansea, Leon Britton and Nathan Dyer replaced Jose Canas and Pablo Hernandez.

Shelvey opened his account for the Welsh club early on as his former employers conceded for the first time in the league this term.

The 21-year-old miscued a volley from the edge of the area but picked up the loose ball, evaded a challenge in the box and steered a calm finish past Simon Mignolet.

However, Shelvey's night took a turn for the worse two minutes later as his loose backpass towards Michel Vorm found Sturridge.

August's player of the month made no mistake as he pounced to equalise and, in the process, become the first player to score in each of Liverpool's first four games of a Premier League season.

After the two early goals, chances were few and far between thereafter until the 25th minute, when Moses dug out a cross from the left wing for Sturridge, who forced a scrambled save from Vorm with his close-range header.

Michu and Wilfried Bony linked well for Swansea just short of the half-hour mark, only for the Ivorian to shoot tamely at Mignolet.

But Liverpool went ahead eight minutes before the break as Moses seized on another sloppy pass from Shelvey to race through and fire past Vorm.

Bony almost levelled after Mignolet parried Dyer's save shortly after but Martin Skrtel's block proved crucial as he kept his side ahead.

Andre Wisdom brought a good save from Vorm seven minutes into the second half, after the Dutchman had parried a Jordan Henderson effort.

Shelvey's eventful night continued three minutes after the hour when he neatly nodded the ball into Michu's path for the Spaniard to level the scores from close range.

Jonathan de Guzman saw a late free-kick tipped wide by Mignolet as Swansea finished the game on top without finding a winner.

The hosts climb to 13th, while Liverpool edge ahead of Arsenal and Tottenham at the summit.

Liverpool boss Rodgers content with Swansea draw

    317989_heroa.jpg

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was pleased with a point after his side's 2-2 draw with Swansea on Monday.

A second-half Michu equaliser denied the visitors all three points, ending their winning run as their clean sheet record also came to an end despite goals from Daniel Sturridge and debutant Victor Moses. However, after going behind to a Jonjo Shelvey goal two minutes in, Rodgers was pleased with how his side battled back. "Tonight a point is good for us," he told Sky Sports.

"The first 65 minutes of the game we were very good with and without the ball. We showed great character to come from behind so early on in the game and [Philippe] Coutinho going off probably disrupted the flow of our game.

"It was two teams that were offensive and wanted to win the game. We came here to maintain our winning streak but it's important that when you can't win, you don't lose."Shelvey had an eventful match against his former employers, with two poor passes allowing Liverpool to lead at the break.

However, Rodgers insisted that the 21-year-old will learn from the experience and become a better player for it. "Jonjo is a very very good young player and he showed that in his first goal by getting in the box and putting it [his goal] away well," Rodgers continued.

"He needs nights like this. I didn't want him to go and he probably didn't want to go but he knew it was in his best interests as a young footballer to go and play."He got caught out a couple of times which obviously led to our goals but he'll be better for the experience and he'll develop into a very good player."

The win edges Liverpool back into top spot, despite dropping their first points of the season.

With Luis Suarez set to return from his 10-match suspension for biting Branislav Ivanovic last season, Rodgers believes that the Urugyuan will provide a boost for his side.

"We've still got one of the best strikers in the world to come back into our team," Rodgers continued, adding that Coutinho was "very sore" after he was forced off following a challenge from Ashley Williams in the second half.

Kompany in line for Champions League return

    317959_heroa.jpg

Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany could make his return from injury against Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League on Tuesday. The 27-year-old has been out of action since the opening game of the season with a groin injury and his side have won just one of their three matches since.

But manager Manuel Pellegrini has revealed that the Belgium international flew out with the squad to the Czech Republic and will now face a late fitness test."Vincent has worked with us normally for the last two days," Pellegrini said.

"We will see if he is 100 per cent. If he is, of course he will play. We will talk with the doctor and decide."I think he will be 100 per cent, but if he is not he will not play."We have a very important match but we have other players if any are not 100 per cent."

City are eager to get the campaign off to a good start after failing to make a mark in the European competition last year, bowing out in the group stage with no wins from their six matches.

Manchester City stars shocked Barry left for Everton, says Baines

    317461_heroa.jpg

Everton full-back Leighton Baines says Manchester City players “couldn’t believe” Gareth Barry had been allowed to leave the club on deadline day.

The midfielder completed a season-long loan to Goodison Park day and put in an impressive debut as the Toffees beat Chelsea 1-0 on Saturday.

Baines is a big admirer of the former Aston Villa man and feels he will prove to be a big asset for Roberto Martinez’s side.

I've known Gareth through the England set-up and I've always rated him really highly," he told the club’s official website.

"The City lads on the last international break were saying that they can't believe that they haven't kept him and he doesn't play for them.

"That says enough about his worth for any team he plays in.”

Barry caught the eye against Jose Mourinho’s men with a superb block to deny Samuel Eto’o what looked a certain goal after a mistake by Tim Howard, and Baines was impressed with his debut.

"Everyone rates him who he plays with and he has come in and shown what a great asset he is going to be for us,” he added.

"We've seen straight away what he can give to the team.

"I'm sure Gareth will tell you that he has not played as much as he would have liked and he has already produced a performance like that.

"If he plays like that most weeks, he is going to add to the team."

Shelvey apologises to Swansea fans for 'gifting' Liverpool draw

    317962_heroa.jpg

Jonjo Shelvey apologised to Swansea fans after his side’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool, claiming he “gifted” his former side a point at the Liberty Stadium.

The midfielder opened the scoring after just two minutes, but was to blame for Liverpool’s equaliser minutes later after a poor back pass was seized upon by Daniel Sturridge who calmly beat Michel Vorm to level the scores.

Shelvey was then involved again as the Reds took the lead, passing the ball straight to Victor Moses who proceeded to score a debut goal to put his side 2-1 up.

“I just want to say sorry to the Swansea fans for two bad mistakes to be honest, I sort of gifted Liverpool the draw really and I think we deserved more than that,” he told Sky Sports.

“Obviously it started tremendously to get the goal, but then two poor mistakes, but then we showed a bit of character to get on the ball.

“I will still be disappointed but that’s just what football’s is about.”

However, Shelvey did then play a part in Swansea’s equaliser, heading the ball down to Michu to make it 2-2 and complete the scoring, yet he still cut a dejected figure after the match.

“I didn’t really want to celebrate [after scoring], because obviously I was at Liverpool and have huge respect for the fans, but its hard to hide your emotions and then two minutes later you give them a goal,” he added.

“You just want to go to a hole where no-one can see you but football is about coming back, it’s happened to great players before

“It’s just a horrible feeling [giving the ball away for the goal] you don’t want to wish it on anyone, even you’re worst enemy.

“It was a bit of a relief [to assist the equaliser] but I still feel I’ve given Liverpool a draw, but it was a great game to play in and both sets of fans were superb."

Blanc hopes PSG go one better in Champions League

    316858_heroa.jpg

Laurent Blanc hopes his Paris Saint-Germain side can make further strides in this season's Champions League and reach the semi-finals, though he admits it will be challenging.

Les Parisiens reached the quarter-finals of the competition last season after being eliminated by Barcelona.

However, their coach has set the bar higher for them this year as they get set to kick off Group C action against Olympiakos in Greece on Tuesday - where he expects there to be a "hot" atmosphere.

“Every match is different but our aims remain the same – to win,” he told reporters.

“Their fans will create a hot atmosphere. I remember them from when I came here with Bordeaux and also during my playing days.

“We will stick to our natural game, retaining possession regardless of what tactics Olympiakos adopt. If we keep the ball, we minimise the risk of conceding.

“To do better than last season would mean to reach the semi-finals, which will be a challenge.

“However, first of all we need to navigate the group, get as many points as possible and win tomorrow.”

The coach revealed they will also be without defender Marquinhos and says he will wait to decide who will replace him.

“Marquinhos is not ready to play 90 minutes," he added. However, things have changed without Alex. There are two players that can cover in his absence, but this is a decision I will make after the last training session.

“Olympiakos are an attacking team who score freely. They are also very good from set pieces.”

PSG goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu backed up his coach's comments, admitting they should not be favoured for an easy win when they travel to the Karaiskakis Stadium for the first meeting between the two teams.

“This match is entirely different than any of the French league," Sirigu added. "A French side against a historic club from abroad, in a foreign stadium packed with fervent supporters.

"There are no easy games and I do not agree with us being labelled by the press as favourites in this group.

“We are strong but we respect our opponents. We are playing against the Greek champions, who have a consistent presence in the competition. It will be a tough match in their home ground, in this atmosphere, for me especially, it will be hard.”

Olympiakos coach Michel is aware of the threat the visitors pose, but insists he will not change his tactics to accommodate the French side.

“Although we have had a significant turnover in players, the same can be said of PSG, who will also be going through a transitional period. We know them very well. They have great players and this is an exciting challenge for us.

“We won’t change our tactics from game to game because our team has been built to play a certain way. It’s about being strong at both ends of the pitch. Our style of play has yielded some impressive results on the domestic front and we hope to carry that form into Europe.

“My players have the necessary experience to cope with such encounters. This is a match for glory and they need to channel their emotions in the best possible way. They are motivated, ambitious and can’t wait to start.”

The match kicks off at 20:45 CET, while in other group C action, Belgian side Anderlecht travel to Portugal to take on last year’s Europa League runners-up Benfica.

Cabaye will win over Newcastle fans, pledges Pardew

    317862_heroa.jpg

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew believes Yohan Cabaye will regain the trust of the club's fans with his performances.

Cabaye was widely linked with a move away from Newcastle in the transfer window and reportedly refused to play for them while a potential switch to Arsenal was still possible.

The France international remained at St James' Park, however, and although he was booed by some sections of the club's support against Fulham on August 31, he was well received against Aston Villa on Saturday.

"It was nice to see [the applause]," Pardew told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle.

"It was important for Yohan more than anybody. The fans understand what he did. We do not all have to agree it was the right thing but we all have to move on in life.

"There is a time to forgive and forget and his performance at Villa will go some way to winning the fans back.

"I am not sure he has won everybody back with that performance, but I think over the coming weeks he will."

Cabaye played a key role in Newcastle's 2-1 away win at Villa Park - and was clapped off when substituted in the 88th minute for Sammy Ameobi.

Pellegrini warns against Champions League complacency

    296201_heroa.jpg

Manuel Pellegrini has warmed Manchester City against complacency as they gear up for their Champions League opener against Viktoria Plzen.

The 2011-12 Premier League winners have crashed out in the group stages of Europe's premier club competition in the previous two seasons, and the Chilean has urged his side to respect their Czech opponents or risk a similar fate.

"I think that all groups are difficult. It would be a big mistake to think that playing a team with less history in Europe would be easier to play," Pellegrini told the club’s official website.

"We can’t be satisfied with the names of the teams we will face, but we will qualify if we play well. I think that any team can beat any other team in their group.

"And one thing is sure, that last season when the draw took place, Milan and FC Zenit St Petersburg were happy to be drawn against Malaga, and they felt they’d already qualified for the next round. But Malaga then went on to win the group. So it is the same now, this season."

Pellegrini has enjoyed success in the Champions League in the past and is convinced he can end Manchester City's ails in the tournament.

"This is my fifth year in the Champions League and I am very happy about my last campaigns," he continued.

"It is not easy to make it with a team like Villarreal and reach the semi-finals, or to make it to a quarter-final. The same happened with Malaga when we managed to make it into the quarter-finals.

"I think that the most important aspect is to make the players feel that they have the capacity, and feel the confidence to compete against teams at the same level, considering all the tactical aspects.

"But I have always repeated the same sentence to my players if we are eliminated in the Champions League, then it is because we faced a team that was superior to us and who played better than us and not because they faced a bad team and were eliminated without any effort.

"So it has been three years now that the club hasn’t done well in Europe, and I think that if we want to qualify, we have to respect Viktoria Plzen, CSKA Moscow, and Bayern Munich the same way, and will try to put in our best performance to beat them."

    Kroos: Bayern must be better

    256765_heroa.jpg

Toni Kroos has conceded that while Bayern Munich has enjoyed a winning start to the season, they have not played as well as they should be.

The Bavarians have won four and drawn one from their first five Bundesliga games and have lost just once since the arrival of Pep Guardiola - a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Borussia Dortmund in the DFL Supercup final.

But Kroos insists they have not yet played up to their own high standards, with club director Matthias Sammer publicly declaring the players' efforts have not been good enough.

“Until now we have won our games but perhaps we did not play as good as we could have,” he told reporters.

“This could be a danger in our next games. So Matthias Sammer has every right to give his opinion about our performance on the field.

“We are looking forward to this season a lot. And it is something special to go in this season as defending champions.

“We remember last season which was quite special and now it is the beginning again, something which could be very special again.

“We want to start with a win in this group stage.”

Kroos’ teammate and Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer agreed with the midfielder's claims.

“I think we did not show our best in the first half of the Hannover game but in the second we did much better.

“We should go on playing like this during the next games, starting tomorrow.”

Bayern kick off the Champions League title defence on Tuesday when Russian outfit CSKA Moscow visit the Allianz Arena in a Group D opener. Manchester City and Viktoria Plzen are also in the group.

The pressure is on Manchester United - Hyypia

    184839_heroa.jpg

Bayer Leverkusen coach Sami Hyypia says "the pressure is on Manchester United" as he prepares to take his side to Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

The former Liverpool centre-back is well versed in Champions League football from his time at Anfield but will take charge of a side in the competition for the first time when B04 face the reigning Premier League champions.

And the 39-year-old trainer is adamant Leverkusen are huge underdogs against the Premier League giants and stressed that all the expectancy will lie on the shoulders of opposite number David Moyes.

"Actually, we can approach this match in a very relaxed manner," the former Liverpool star told a press conference.

"The pressure certainly is on Manchester United.

However, Hyypia is keen on causing an upset at Old Trafford and simply wants to see his side play to the best of their ability.

"I hope we can reach our potential on the pitch and take away something countable," he added.

The encounter between Bayer and The Red Devils is scheduled for September 17, 20.45CET.

Manchester United forward Macheda joins Doncaster on loan

Manchester United striker Federico Macheda has joined Championship side Doncaster Rovers on an initial one-month loan deal.

Macheda has made 36 appearance for the United first team, scoring five goals since joining from Lazio as a 16-year-old.

The 22-year-old trained with his new team-mates on Sunday and Monday and could feature against Watford on Tuesday night.

Doncaster manager Paul Dickov has called the transfer a coup for his side and is hoping for a healthy goalscoring return from the Italian.

"We've got him for an initial month with a view to extending it to the 93 days, which is the maximum," Dickov told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"I know from speaking to Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes he's a top quality player and David knows we'll look after him and keep him informed on his progress.

"We had a little nibble at him before the season started but it wasn't to be then.

"Hopefully he'll add goals. He's been to big clubs on loan but not really played for them, and he's very hungry to get his career back on track. It's been a frustrating couple of years for him and he's keen to hit the ground running."

Macheda spent the latter part of last season on loan at Stuttgart after previously being sent out to Sampdoria and Queens Park Rangers.

He is most known amongst United supporters for his 90th-minute wonder goal against Aston Villa, which swung the 2008/09 title in their favour.

Isco: Real Madrid are favourites to win the Champions League

    307089_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid attacker Isco says his club are favourites to clinch the Champions League title this season.

Los Blancos were eliminated by Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals of the tournament last term, but the youngster is confident that the club are in a better postition to secure the long-awaited Decima this time around.

"Real Madrid are favourites for the Champions League trophy," the 21-year-old told a press conference.

"It shouldn't become an obsession, but we will give everything for la Decima.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti recently faced criticism for letting Mesut Ozil leave for Arsenal, but Isco is convinced the club's new signings easily make up for the loss of the valuable assist creator.

"After Mesut Ozil's departure, not much has changed. Now we have Gareth Bale and we are tyring to help him.

"With new additions this summer, we can clinch the title this season."

The former Malaga man then assured his side are aware of the atmosphere that will await them in Istanbul and singled out Wesley Sneijder and Didier Drogba as possible threats.

"Galatasaray have important players and some passionate fans. We are aware of that. We will do our best and try to win this match.

"I know Wesley Sneijder and Didier Drogba well. We will do everything we can to stop them. We prepared well for this encounter."

Real will lock horns with Fatih Terim's men on Tuesday at the Turk Telekom Arena.
