:D:D:DCasillas wanted to kill me, jokes Ramos

    318557_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has joked that Iker Casillas wanted to kill him after he injured the goalkeeper in the 6-1 victory over Galatasaray on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old was handed a first start in a competitive fixture since January for the Champions League trip to Istanbul.

However, the Spain captain saw his return to first-team action end after just 14 minutes following a collision with his compatriot, which resulted in coach Carlo Ancelotti swapping him for Diego Lopez.

And Ramos took to Facebook on Wednesday to quipp that the shot-stopper was keen on revenge: "Someone wanted to kill me today. Luckily the injury is not serious and Iker will return soon."

Los Blancos will resume domestic duties on Sunday when they host Getafe at the Santiago Bernabeu.

    Chelsea lack maturity, admits Mourinho

    318772_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho admitted his Chelsea side lack maturity after they slumped to a shock 2-1 defeat to Basel in their Champions League opener at Stamford Bridge.

Oscar put the Blues ahead just before half-time but the hosts were stunned by second-half goals from Mohamed Salah and Marco Streller in the Group E clash.

Mourinho described his squad as "beautiful young eggs" in his pre-match press conference but was left ruing his players’ ability to handle pressure following a second defeat in a row.

"I think the team doesn’t have the maturity and personality to deal with certain pressures of the game," Mourinho told reporters.

"We saw that at Everton when they scored just before half-time and again today. When the first negative moment arrives, which is the equaliser, the team shakes a little bit.

"We go home very sad but tomorrow morning we wake up and work on it."

Mourinho handed a debut to €36 million summer signing Willian but watched a toothless display as the Londoners struggled to create chances.

But the Portuguese accepted responsibility for the defeat and is confident that Chelsea will still progress from a group that is completed by Schalke and Steaua Bucharest.

"I don’t think it’s the time to speak about individual performances," Mourinho added. "We lost as a team. The ones who play well and not so good are all in the same bag and I’m responsible. I like players to shine and to praise them when we win, but when we lose I’m responsible.

"It was not what we expected. Of course not. In the end we lost three points and we must get them somewhere else.

"The three points we lost him, we must get them back. The objective of finishing in the top two is far from lost, we are going to fight for it and I believe very much we are going to achieve."

Fiorentina 3-0 Pacos de Ferreira: Rossi on target as Viola romp to victory

    319110hp2.jpg

Giuseppe Rossi was back on the scoresheet as Fiorentina recorded a comfortable 3-0 win over Pacos de Ferreira in their opening Europa League clash.

The Italian struck in the final 15 minutes after Gonzalo Rodriguez and Ryder Matos had put la Viola in control against their Portuguese visitors, who failed to unsettle the hosts unduly throughout the encounter.

With the injured Mario Gomez watching on from the stands, Fiorentina struggled to create many meaningful chances in the early exchanges, with Rossi and Gonzalo producing the early efforts of note early on.

Indeed, it was the visitors who came closest in the opening half an hour, with Manchester United loanee Bebe drawing a firm save from Neto.

However, right on the 30-minute mark Fiorentina broke the deadlock, with Rossi's devilish in-swinging corner meeting the head of Rodriguez, who glanced his effort past Matias Degra.

The tie remained in the balance after the break as Bebe and Irobiso came closest to levelling matters but substitute Matos doubled the advantage just seconds after entering the field as he turned home Borja Valero's cross at the near post.

Vincenzo Montella's side began to slip into cruise control and Rossi soon made certain of the points, picking his spot superbly from inside the area to put a seal on another impressive showing.

The win moves Fiorentina to the top of Group E after the first round of fixtures.

Valencia 0-3 Swansea: Michu and Bony star in Swans romp

    319118hp2.jpg

Swansea City made a dream start to their Europa League campaign as they swept aside Valencia 3-0 at the Mestalla on Thursday.

Wilfried Bony opened the scoring in the Group A encounter with his fourth goal in four European fixtures this season, before Michu and Jonathan de Guzman completed the comfortable victory in the second half.

Valencia's night started poorly when Adil Rami was sent off for bringing down Bony in the early stages, and the Ivorian opened the scoring with a powerful effort shortly after.

Michu deservedly grabbed a second with a driven strike inside the box, before De Guzman's stunning free-kick from distance ensured the victory.

Swansea boss Michael Laudrup made five changes to the side that drew 2-2 with Premier League leaders Liverpool on Monday, with the likes of De Guzman and Alejandro Pozuelo winning recalls.

Valencia slumped to a 3-1 defeat at Real Betis on Sunday – their third La Liga defeat in a row – and as a result manager Miroslav Djukic dropped Joao Pereira and Juan Bernat, with defenders Antonio Barragan and Andres Guardado selected in their place.

Swansea made a bright start to the match and received a boost in the 10th minute when Valencia defender Rami was given his marching orders.

The lively Bony pounced on a mistake from Ever Banega and raced clear of Rami, only to be hauled down by the France international.

Djukic was forced to shuffle his pack as a result, introducing another central defender, Ricardo Costa, in place of Federico Cartabia.

But the change could not stopping Swansea taking the lead as Bony put the visitors ahead in the 14th minute.

Neat interplay between Michu and Pozuelo led to the former centring for Bony from the left and he hit a fierce left-foot strike from just inside the area that whistled past Valencia goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

Costa then nearly gifted Swansea a second when his attempted clearance was played straight to Nathan Dyer, but the winger, who raced clear, dragged his shot wide.

Bony came agonisingly close to a second five minutes before half-time when he turned Costa easily before flashing an effort narrowly wide.

Swansea started the second period in similar fashion and twice Bony missed good opportunities to double their advantage.

But the away side deservedly grabbed a second in the 58th minute.

Pozuelo collected a De Guzman pass before playing a perfectly weighted pass to Michu on the right hand side of the box and the forward rifled home at the near post.

De Guzman then produced a moment of sheer brilliance just four minutes later.

Banega conceded a soft free-kick 30 yards from goal on the left and the Netherlands international bent a superb strike into the top corner to delight the away fans.

With the game all but won Swansea slowed the tempo down, allowing Valencia to enjoy a spell of possession, and Helder Postiga almost grabbed a consolation with eight minutes remaining but headed Barragan's cross harmlessly wide.

Jonjo Shelvey also came close with an ambitious chip at the other end, but three goals were more than enough for an excellent Swansea side.

Estoril 1-2 Sevilla: Super-sub Gameiro sinks Silva's side

    319232hp2.jpg

Super-sub Kevin Gameiro ensured Sevilla got off to a winning start in this season's Europa League with a 2-1 win over Estoril. The Frenchman, introduced as a second-half substitute, fired home in the 77th minute after Bruno Miguel had cancelled out Vitolo's opener in the hosts' first appearance in the tournament.

Sevilla's experience in European competition looked set to pay dividends from the outset as they took the game to their Portuguese hosts in a lively first quarter of an hour.

Carlos Bacca was thwarted by keeper Vagner Silva before Marko Marin fizzed a shot onto the outside of the post.

Bacca then came within inches of breaking the deadlock, only to be foiled by Mano's goal-line clearance, as the Portuguese side held on until half-time.

But their resistance was not to last. The excellent Marin slid the ball through to Vitolo after a mazy dribble, allowing the striker to dink the ball calmly over Bacca.

Estoril responded immediately to stun the visitors, as Bruno Miguel tapped home after Evandro's cut-back, prompting Unai Emery to ring the changes as Gameiro and Ivan Rakitic were introduced from the bench.

And it took the former PSG striker just over 10 minutes to make an impact. Shortly after Rakitic had been denied from a free kick, Gameiro rifled home a right-footed shot from inside the area to restore the Spanish side's advantage - one they did not relinquish in the closing stages.

The win puts Emery's side clear at the top of Group H, after Slovan Liberec came from two goals down to draw w2-2 with Freiburg in the other encounter.

Tottenham 3-0 Tromso: Defoe & Eriksen set Spurs on their way

    319160hp2.jpg

Jermain Defoe scored twice as Tottenham's Europa League push started with a comfortable 3-0 win over Tromso on Thursday.

Spurs rarely got out of second gear at White Hart Lane as they strolled to victory in their Group K opener, with Defoe's first-half double proving crucial.

The 30-year-old has not started a Premier League match this season but showed no signs of lacking sharpness as he lobbed Tromso goalkeeper Marcus Sahlman with a terrific finish in the 21st minute.

And the England international scored his 20th goal in Europe for Tottenham just nine minutes later with a composed left-footed effort.

Substitute Christian Eriksen sealed the win in the 86th minute with a superb curling strike to open his account for the club as Tottenham won comfortably.

Injuries to Danny Rose and Moussa Dembele were the only negatives for Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas, but this was as comfortable as victories come for the Portuguese's side.

Villas-Boas made six changes to the team that beat Norwich City 2-0 on Saturday, with Defoe, Erik Lamela, Lewis Holtby and Danny Rose among the inclusions.

It was still a Tottenham side that contained nine full internationals though, while Czech striker Zdenek Ondrasek headlined Tromso's three inclusions.

Spurs made a bright start to the match and Rose fired an early warning to the visitors when he skipped down the left flank, cut in and shot at Sahlman in just the fourth minute.

Holtby then put Defoe through with an excellent ball, but the England striker was denied by the legs of Sahlman, before Dembele and Gylfi Sigurdsson had attempts on goal.

Tottenham were in cruise control and the first goal came as no surprise, as Defoe scored his first of the evening with a clever dink.

Sigurdsson started the move by winning the ball back and a slick move finished with Defoe, after Lamela's first-time flick put him into space, and he calmly chipped over Sahlman to please the home crowd.

Younes Kaboul poked wide from a corner shortly after before Tottenham doubled their lead on the half-hour mark through Defoe again.

It was another expert finish from Defoe, who ran onto a smart Holtby ball before slotting past Sahlman with his left foot.

Sigurdsson then shot wide and Defoe had a curling effort saved as Tottenham continued to dominate.

Tromso sat back after the break, eager to avoid a thrashing, and as a result the hosts had even more time on the ball and the pace of the match dropped.

Defoe was flagged offside when a chance for his hat-trick looked likely, and Lamela and Holtby did not convert chances.

Morten Moldskred made an excellent run through the Tottenham defence but failed to produce an end product, while Fulham loanee Josh Pritchard fired over from distance for the visitors.

Tottenham's attempts for a third saw Sandro head straight at Sahlman while Paulinho had an effort blocked, before Eriksen opened his account for the club with an excellent strike from distance.

The 21-year-old curled a 20-yard effort into the top left corner, leaving Sahlman stranded to put the gloss on an easy win for the home side.

32 nations declare interest in staging Euro 2020 matches

    267586_heroa.jpg

Uefa has announced that 39 cities from 32 nations have declared an interest in hosting matches at the 2020 European Championships.

The competition is set to break from tradition and be staged across the continent rather than in one country and London, Rome, Munich, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Madrid are among the cities to have been put forward as prospective venues, with Paris a shock omission from the bid submitted by the French Football Federation, who instead put Lyon forward.

Five countries - Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Ukraine - have named more than one city, with Uefa president Michel Platini delighted at the clamour to be part of the event that will mark the 60th anniversary of the tournament.

"We are extremely proud to see the huge interest in the bidding process, with more than half of our member associations willing to host matches at Euro 2020," Platini told the official Uefa website.

"The finals will be a great celebration of football across the European continent, and the 60th anniversary edition will be truly special, by really coming to the doorstep of all football fans."

The Uefa Executive Committee will decide in September 2014 on the 13 cities that will host games during Euro 2020.

Cities could be awarded one of 12 standard packages that include three group matches and one knock-out game, or the showpiece package of both semi-finals and the final.

The 32 member associations on the UEFA shortlist are: Armenia (Yerevan), Azerbaijan (Baku), Belarus (Minsk), Belgium (Brussels), Bulgaria (Sofia), Croatia (Zagreb), Czech Republic (Prague), Denmark (Copenhagen), England (London), Finland (Helsinki), France (Lyon), Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (Skopje), Germany (Munich), Greece (Athens), Hungary (Budapest), Israel (Jerusalem), Italy (Rome and Milan), Kazakhstan (Astana), Netherlands (Amsterdam), Poland (Warsaw and Chorzow), Portugal (Lisbon and Porto), Republic of Ireland (Dublin), Romania (Bucharest), Russia (Saint Petersburg), Scotland (Glasgow), Serbia (Belgrade), Spain (Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and Valencia), Sweden (Solna), Switzerland (Basel), Turkey (Istanbul), Ukraine (Kyiv and Donetsk) and Wales (Cardiff).

    Roma confirm new Totti deal

    319303_heroa.jpg

Roma have confirmed that Francesco Totti has signed a two-year contract extension that will see him remain at Stadio Olimpico until 2016.

The 36-year-old's current deal had been due to expire at the end of the current season but after lengthy discussions with the capital club the Giallorossi legend revealed his delight at extending his stay with his hometown club on Friday.

"I have another two years of responsibilities and I'm sure we'll achieve some great things together," Totti told reporters at a press conference.

"I'd like to thank the president for this new contract. Everyone wanted it to happen, me and the club."

Totti retired from international duty after winning the World Cup with Italy in 2006 but his form last season - which saw him score 12 goals in 36 Serie A appearances - prompted speculation he could return to the Azzurri fold.

And though he insists his primary focus remains improving on last season's sixth place finish with Roma, the Italian admits he would consider a recall if Cesare Prandelli comes calling.

He added: "Going to the World Cup? My jersey is the Roma jersey but obviously I remain open to the possibility. We'll see."

Club president James Pallotta was sat beside Totti at the announcement of his new deal and said his committment to the club was a sign of progress.

"I'm honoured that Francesco Totti is staying here and I'd like to toast to a great future for Roma and Francesco," said Pallotta.

"There's never been any doubt in our minds that Totti would stay. He's Roma's leader and he'll be here forever.

"I'm pleased with what we've achieved in the last few months. We're a work in progress and we're forging ahead."

Totti made his Roma debut back in 1992 and has gone on to win Serie A, the Supercoppa Italiana twice and the Coppa Italia three times in his 21 years with the club.
