Alexis: I still have room for improvement

    317188_heroa.jpg

Alexis Sanchez says he is feeling very well at Barcelona following his fine start to the 2013-14 campaign, but has insisted that he still has room for improvement.

The Chile international has netted two goals in three La Liga appearances so far this term, including the winner in Barcelona's 3-2 win over Sevilla last weekend, and he has made it clear that there is more to come in the remainder of the season.

"I feel the confidence of the coach and of my team-mates, which makes me feel very well out there on the pitch," Alexis was quoted as saying by La Tercera.

"But I still have room for improvement. I am not yet on top of my game."

Alexis joined Barcelona from Udinese in the summer of 2011 and has since made close to 100 appearances for the Catalans, winning one La Liga title and a Copa del Rey in the process.

Baines wanted to join Manchester United, admits Stubbs

    300632_heroa.jpg

Everton coach Alan Stubbs has revealed that Leighton Baines wanted to join Manchester United in the summer but was refused the chance.

The Red Devils bid repeatedly for both the left-back and midfielder Marouane Fellaini throughout the summer but eventually had to settle for only the Belgian, agreeing a £27.5 million deal late on transfer deadline day.

Speaking at a Football Writers Association event, Stubbs confirmed that the Toffees drew the line at selling Baines before recruiting the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Gareth Barry and James McCarthy late on.

"The way the transfer deadline goes, everyone looks at it and it got to a stage where we knew the Gareth Bale [to Real Madrid] thing was going to happen," he recalled. "That was the big one. Underlying from that, there wasn't really an awful lot going on.

"Probably come seven o'clock on the night [September 2] at Everton the word from the training ground was that no one was going to go.

"Fellaini was staying. Bainesy was never really an option - the club had dug its heels in. Bainesy had obviously said he'd like to go.

"And then, come nine o'clock, suddenly we started to get linked with Lukaku and then the Fellaini thing was starting with negotiations with United. By the time it had finished we'd bought three in and they are great additions to the squad."

Falcao reminds me of Ibrahimovic, says Alex

    317426_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain defender Alex is relishing the opportunity to measure himself against Monaco striker Radamel Falcao in this weekend's Ligue 1 clash and has likened the Colombia international to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Falcao has netted four goals in five league appearances for Monaco so far and Alex has acknowledged that PSG must keep a close eye on the 27-year-old.

"I have never played against Falcao so far, but I obviously know him," Alex told reporters.

"You can never relax against him, because he's always waiting for his moment. He reminds me of Ibrahimovic. He is one of the best and we will have to keep a close eye on him.

"He is a great player and a very dangerous striker. He is among the best in the world with his qualities. We have to be very careful against him and can't afford to allow him any space."

Sundays encounter at the Parc des Princes kicks off at 21:00CET.

Paris Saint-Germain can win Champions League - Ginola

    307423_heroa.jpg

David Ginola believes former club Paris Saint-Germain can win the Champions League in the next few years and insists their big spending in Ligue 1 will benefit French football.

PSG host rivals Monaco on Sunday, with Claudio Ranieri’s side top of the table after five games following a summer of huge spending financed by Russian billionaire owner Dmitry Rybolovlev.

Les Parisiens won the Ligue 1 title last season following massive expenditure on leading players themselves, and Ginola believes a French side could conquer Europe in the coming years.

“I think Paris could win the Champions League in the future,” Ginola told Goal. “Monaco maybe as well when they are back in the competition. It’s good for the promotion of French football to have two teams who can compete with the best.

“We now have players in France who would never have considered playing before in our league. The investors from abroad are also promoting the domestic game because the best French players might prefer to stay in France now.

“Before, they’ve gone abroad for titles and because of money, but now they may feel they can fulfil their careers at a club like Paris or Monaco.”

Ginola subscribes to the view that Ligue 1 is a two-horse race but feels it is too early in the campaign to make a definitive judgement on Monaco following their promotion last season and heavy spending spree over the summer.

The former midfielder has also been impressed by Radamel Falcao, who has scored four league goals in five appearances since his €60 (£50.5) million switch to Monaco, and believes the Colombian should beat PSG rivals Zlatan Ibrahimovic to become the division’s top scorer this term.

“They are obviously the two best teams and one of them will win Ligue 1,” Ginola added. “Sunday will give us a better idea of what will happen in the next few months. We don’t know much about Monaco yet and this is the first test for them - maybe the only test.

“Falcao is looking promising and scored four goals already. He’s a great player but so are Cavani and Ibrahimovic so it will be interesting to see who is better.

“They are all players who guarantee you goals every year and that’s why one of these teams will win the title.”

Llorente will be of use to Juventus, says Toni

    298796_heroa.jpg

Former Italy international Luca Toni is confident that Fernando Llorente will eventually prove to be a useful addition for Juventus.

The Spanish attacker has been struggling to live up to the high expectations since his summer move from Athletic Bilbao and has mainly been forced to watch from the sidelines.

However, Toni has little doubt that Llorente will become a valuable first team member at Juventus once he has adapted to his new surroundings.

"Llorente has always done well in La Liga and with Spain's national team. Juventus signed him because they think he can add something. It's way too soon to write him off," Toni told Tuttosport.

"At the moment, it seems as if Conte prefers attackers with different characteristics than Llorente. He prefers attackers who combine well, help each other and can add something outside the box, too.

"That being said, I am convinced that Juventus will spend a lot of time in their opponents' area and Llorente will prove to be useful."

Llorente has made just one official appearance for the Serie A champions so far.

Real Madrid are like Ferrari, says Perez

    295497_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has compared the Santiago Bernabeu side to Formula 1 team Ferrari as he feels they both attempt to sign the best athletes around in their respective sports.

The Primera Division giants spent over €170 million to bring in the likes of Gareth Bale, Asier Illarramendi, Isco, Dani Carvajal and Casemiro this summer, while Ferrari have two-time world champion Fernando Alonso driving for them and have recently signed Kimi Raikkonen, a 2007 world champion, for the 2014 season to replace current No,2 Felipe Massa.

However, Perez has stressed that Madrid's financial resources are not the main reason behind their success.

"Real Madrid are a bit like Ferrari," the Blancos president was quoted as saying by Marca. "Ferrari always aim to sign the best drivers around as well, yet don't always emerge victorious.

"Our strategy is not to just pull out the cheque book time and time again. We are successful because our model is unique and allows us to sign the best players."

With Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo, Madrid have the two most-expensive players in the history of the game in their squad.

:cool:Casillas set to stay despite miserable year at Real Madrid

    291449_heroa.jpg

Iker Casillas is set to stay at Real Madrid until at least the summer despite his nightmare year at the Spanish side, Goal can reveal.

The Spain skipper has barely featured for Madrid in 2013 and was hit with a fresh setback on Tuesday as he was forced off through injury after just 13 minutes of his first-team return at Galatasaray in the Champions League.

The 32-year-old has considered his future since being omitted by Jose Mourinho last season and again by Carlo Ancelotti for the opening rounds of La Liga this term. However, he has been given hope of regaining his starting spot after appearing last week and would now be unable to sign for another Champions League side in January, in any case, following his cameo in Istanbul - which included three fine saves before he was replaced by Diego Lopez.

But there is more to it than that.

Casillas' partner, journalist Sara Carbonero, is 25 weeks pregnant and expecting a baby boy either late this year or in January 2014. Asked last week whether the baby would be born in Madrid, Carbonero gave an ambiguous reply:"I don't know if my son will be born in Madrid or not," she said. "But now is not the time to talk about that ..."

However, the pregnancy makes a move in January almost impossible: Carbonero will be unable to travel in December and will not want to uproot in the advanced stages of the antenatal procedure, while adapting to life in a new city without the support of friends or family is also far from ideal following the birth of a first child. With all of that in mind, Casillas has decided to remain in Spain until the summer at least.

At Madrid, however, there is concern that Casillas may seek a transfer next July. The 32-year-old is seen as an institution by the Santiago Bernabeu hierarchy, but Ancelotti's goalkeeping coach Villiam Vecchi backed Diego Lopez to start at the beginning of the campaign because of his extra sharpness in pre-season training. Iker, short of match fitness, was still playing catch-up; he still is.

"It [the injury] was bad luck," Ancelotti explained on Tuesday night. The Italian added: "[Iker] made a great save and showed he is in great form - he will play the next Champions League game."

It has since been confirmed that the goalkeeper will be out for only around five days with bruising to his ribs and he will therefore be back in the starting line-up for Madrid's next European fixture: at home to Danish side Copenhagen on October 2.

Although this is without question his most difficult year at the Santiago Bernabeu, Casillas has been out of the Madrid line-up before, having been benched by former Real coach Vicente del Bosque back in 2001-02. Even that had a happy ending as Iker made a heroic return in the Champions League final of that same season against Bayer Leverkusen, when he replaced the injured Cesar Sanchez and made a number of important saves as the Spanish side claimed the trophy for a ninth time.

Del Bosque (the first to drop Iker and now, ironically, the only one picking him) caused controversy recently by claiming the Spain shot-stopper has all but decided his future: "I asked Iker how he is; he told me he had got through some difficult moments, that he was more comfortable and more relaxed," the national coach explained earlier this month. "He told me he had half-resolved his future ..."

Spending most of his time on the bench right now and with fan criticism still ringing in his ears at every home game as he is accused of being a media 'mole' by sections of the Madrid support, Casillas will only consider staying at the club in the long term if he can regain his place in the side.

In the meantime, he has the support of his Madrid team-mates, including Diego Lopez. As Casillas left the pitch on Tuesday night, the two men embraced and the Galician later said: "It was a knock [that he received] and I could see that it was painful. We are all saddened by our team-mate's injury."

Ancelotti, meanwhile, has never previously rotated two goalkeepers in his 18-year coaching career, and the Italian tends to favour tall players between the sticks. "The best three goalkeepers I have coached are [Gianluigi] Buffon (at Juventus and Parma, 1.91m), Dida (Milan, 1.96m) and [Christian] Abbiati (Milan, 1.91m)," he has said.

Diego Lopez stands at 1.96m, towering over team-mate Iker (1.83m). So, while it is a big man who is keeping the Spain star out of the Madrid line-up at the moment (Lopez), it is a little guy (his soon-to-be-born son) who will ensure Casillas remains in the capital for the next few months, and, given his spectacular story of success with both Real and Spain, anything could happen by then.

Arsenal will definitely challenge for titles this season, says Walcott

    318737_heroa.jpg

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott is confident the club will challenge for top honours this season after bouncing back from their opening day defeat to Aston Villa by winning their last six games.

The Gunners beat Marseille 2-1 in the Champions League, to make it 10 straight wins away from home, and Walcott feels the run proves the quality of the current squad.

"We've got players who are playing fantastically well," Walcott told reporters. "There is so much belief in this team at the moment and I think it's showing. We just need to push on and make sure we get that home form going now; the away form is absolutely fantastic.

"We've got to stay fit, which is crucial – we don't want to lose any more players. But as soon as the players come back there is going to be more competition for places and that's only going to be a good thing for Arsenal. I think we'll push on and we can definitely challenge [for trophies] this year, for sure.

"Someone told me in the dressing room it's 10 successive wins away from home – it's a record. To be part of a team that has done that, in the amount of years that Arsenal have existed, is a great honour and a great achievement for everyone. It just shows how talented these players are.”

Wednesday’s victory in France saw Aaron Ramsey bag his sixth goal of the season, and Walcott was full of praise for the Wales international who had been in impressive form so far this season.

"It always takes time when you have injuries and [Aaron] had one of the worst injuries in football," he added.

"He's worked really hard and it's definitely paying off now. He's enjoying his football, he loves touching the ball and he's got something different to his game now which is goals.

“People would criticise that side [in the past] but I see him in training every day and he's looking a totally different player. He's like a new signing. It's an absolute honour to play with him at the moment."

    Welbeck in Manchester derby contention

    310837_heroa.jpg

Danny Welbeck has given David Moyes a boost after returning from injury and could feature for Manchester United in the derby at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Welbeck completed his first full contact training session on Friday after failing to make David Moyes’ squad for the club’s last two fixtures with fluid on his knee.

Prior to his return, Welbeck had been consigned to light jogging and non-contact ball work but was deemed fit enough to engage in a full-on session at Carrington, boosting his chances of featuring against Manuel Pellegrini’s team.

Though the 22-year-old could be selected in the matchday squad, there are doubts that he will make the starting XI against City given the current form of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney.

Rooney netted twice in United’s 4-2 defeat of Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday night while his Netherlands strike partner has six goals in six games for the Red Devils so far this season.

Welbeck will also undergo a final training session on Saturday ahead of the Manchester derby and Moyes will consult the club’s medical staff before making a decision.

United also have other injury doubts and are likely to be without Rafael who has not fully recovered from a hamstring problem. Phil Jones is also struggling with an ankle injury which may mean see a third start in a row for Rio Ferdinand - a scenario Moyes hoped to avoid.

Ronaldo a ‘once a century’ player - Perez

    317470_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez believes that Cristiano Ronaldo is a "once a century" player.

The former Manchester United forward signed a new contract to keep him tied to the Santiago Bernabeu until 2018.

Perez insists Ronaldo, 28, is worth every penny but stresses the importance of having quality around him, name-checking summer signings Gareth Bale, Isco and Asier Illarramendi.

"We are privileged to have Cristiano in our club," he told the Spanish TV show Jugones. "He’s one of those players that only comes along once a century and we are lucky enough to have him in our team.

"But the presence of other foreign players like Bale, the best Spanish players like Isco and Illarramendi and academy players is also vital to our project."

The Madrid chief also retracted comments he made about unsettled goalkeeper Iker Casillas hurting the team with his mistakes.

"I fully respect Casillas and admire him, but there’s always someone with bad intentions who wants to tell things in a way that’s not true," he continued. "All I said at the time was that people close to us don’t always help us. But I meant that for everyone.

"I said it in support of Casillas, as a matter of fact, not against him. We are all very proud of Casillas, he is the best goalkeeper in Spain’s history.

"In life we all go through good times and hard times, but we have to keep going."

Perez attempted to silence the continued debate about whether Madrid should have sold Mesut Ozil, insisting the midfielder was not forced out of Arsenal.

He added: "Ozil left because he wanted to. He made it clear he wanted to leave, we were told an offer would come in for him, and that’s that.

"We discussed it with the coaching staff and they agreed to it. There are other players that didn’t want to leave and they are still here.

"If a player has a contract and doesn’t want to leave, he doesn’t. [Angel] Di Maria is a good example of that and we are delighted that he is still here."

No crisis at Chelsea, insists Mourinho

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has insisted there is no "crisis" at the club, despite a run of three consecutive losses.

The Portuguese has faced criticism from some quarters after Chelsea's shock 2-1 loss at home to Basel in the Champions League on Wednesday, which followed defeats to Everton and Bayern Munich in the Premier League and Super Cup respectively.
But Mourinho says it is bound to take time for his methods to work following his return to Stamford Bridge, adding that he is unconcerned by his side's recent run of form.

"Scrutiny is normal," he said. "I have been in football for a long time so I have learned not to be surprised by scrutiny, for there to be opinions and critics. I am not surprised, I am not worried.

"For me it is not a crisis. It is two bad results. I have a job to do. I know where I want to go and the steps I have to take.

"When you want to build something different and players are adapted, comfortable with philosophy for years before, it's more difficult.

"I don't like the way Chelsea were playing the last couple of years, the club didn't like it. We have the players to change, we want to play a different style."

Mourinho's men will be eager to get back on track when they host Fulham on Saturday, but Chelsea have won just one of their last five Premier League meetings with their west London neighbours.

Moyes urges Rooney to 'step up again' in Manchester derby

Manchester United manager David Moyes is hoping for more of the same from Wayne Rooney in Sunday's derby clash after the 27-year-old struck twice against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.

The England international became just the fourth player in United's history to reach the 200-goal milestone for the club thanks to a double against the Bundesliga outfit on Tuesday night.

And Moyes is hoping Rooney can continue his impressive form at the start of the new season when the Red Devils travel to the Etihad Stadium to take on rivals Manchester City."He's worked hard and is showing exactly what he can do," the Scottish manager told reporters.

"If Wayne could score another two goals at the weekend that would be the next step forward. I'm asking him to step up again."The Scot also confirmed that the derby is just as important to players as it is to the fans, and appreciates that the points could be crucial as two of the major title contenders go head-to-head.

"There is an excitement for any derbies in any big city in the world. They're all really important to your own supporters," he added.

"They're important to the players as well but ultimately it's about what happens come the end of the season and how many points you get together to see who is top.

"These points could be really important towards that, they may not be. We'll go and we'll try and take all the points."

Silva set to return for Manchester derby, says Pellegrini

    307451_heroa.jpg

Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed David Silva is available for the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The 27-year-old midfielder missed Manchester City's last two fixtures against Stoke City and Viktoria Plzen with a thigh injury, but has returned to first-team training ahead of the fixture against the Premier League champions.

Pellegrini has also revealed that Micah Richards is in contention to make City's matchday squad for the first time this season after recovering from a hamstring problem, while Gael Clichy is a doubt after returning to training on Friday.

"The players who were injured were Micah Richards, he has worked normally with the whole squad, same thing [with] David Silva and [Gael] Clichy starts today," Pellegrini told reporters.

"It's the first day for him [Clichy] so maybe he will not be ready for next Sunday but all the other players expect [Martin] Demichelis are fit, no problems."

Despite managing for the first time in England, Pellegrini insists he understands the significance of the fixture against United and says his side will be aiming to secure three points against the Premier League champions.

"I don't need to be here to know how important the derby is, but working here and living here I know it is a special game.

"It is a match of six points. It is very important to win, [against] one of the most important teams.

"It is more important to win than not to lose. Of course if you cannot win it is better not to lose, but we will try to win from the beginning."

Qatar confident over World Cup 2022

    319376_heroa.jpg

Qatar have announced they are convinced they can host World Cup 2022 during the summer, despite fears the tournament could be moved to winter because of the the country's climate.

Concerns have been raised regarding the temperatures in the Middle East during the normal months of June and July when a World Cup is normally staged, but the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee insist there will be no problems.

The safety of players and fans had been called into question if the temperatures in Qatar soared over 40 degrees and moving the competition to a cooler time of the year has been mooted.

Uefa announced on Thursday that their 54 member associations backed the plan to move the event, but the Qatar organising committee do not believe it is necessary.

"We bid for the 2022 Fifa World Cup in summer and are fully committed and working hard to deliver on these promises," a statement from the committee read.
"If the international football community asks us to move the timetable for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, we are able to do so, but the development and implementation of environmentally-friendly cooling technologies remains an important legacy issue for our nation, region and many countries with similar climates.

"Creating comfortable conditions for public areas, walkways, training pitches and stadiums both during and after the World Cup means being able to play and watch football matches in summer throughout the country."Cooling technology has existed at Jassim bin Hamad (Al Sadd) Stadium since 2008. This June, the stadium (in Doha) hosted a Fifa World Cup qualifier in cool and comfortable conditions.

"We are now in the process of developing and perfecting sustainable cooling technologies to ensure that our Qatar 2022 Fifa World Cup stadia, training grounds and fan zones offer the optimal temperature for players and fans to enjoy the games."

Fifa president Sepp Blatter intimated earlier this year that awarding the tournament to Qatar may have been a mistake, but the governing body remain committed to holding the tournament in the desert nation.

    Bernabeu set for retractable roof

    293099_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has announced plans for a €400 million renovation of the Santiago Bernabeu, that will include the installation of a fully-retractable roof.

The 85,000 seater stadium is one of the world's most iconic arenas but Perez is determined to push through with an overhaul of facilities, while insisting that the move will not result in an increase in season ticket prices.

He told AS: "Our agreement with the Madrid Council was subject to an appeal and a judge put in place a temporary stay on proceedings, but that’s now been lifted by a higher court so we can now go back to the architects for revised plans. It’s going to be a spectacular stadium, fully covered and air conditioned."

Perez also revealed that los Blancos would use a sizeable loan - in the region of €300-400m - to fund the extravagant plans, which he hopes will see the Bernabeu bring in €80m a year in revenue.

The 66-year-old added that he had strongly opposed an offer to take the club out of the ownership of supporters and convert los Blancos into a public limited company.

"On my last trip to the US I was offered the opportunity of floating 10 per cent of the club on the stock exchange but I rejected it. The other clubs should be grateful that we aren’t a limited liability company, because we’d have a lot more money and there’d be an even bigger gap between us and them."

However, Madrid revealed that the planned construction of a Real Madrid themed island in the United Arab Emirates will now not go ahead following a lack of funding from investors.

De Gea: Leverkusen win has lifted confidence ahead of Manchester derby

    319368_heroa.jpg

David de Gea insists Manchester United head to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday in high spirits after beating Bayer Leverkusen in midweek.

David Moyes led the club to a 4-2 victory in his first Champions League game in charge, but the tough fixtures keep on coming with a trip to local rivals Manchester City on Sunday.

The Spanish keeper is relishing the clash as the reigning champions get set for their third high-profile Premier League game in a month, following a goalless draw against Chelsea and defeat at Liverpool.

"The victory (against Leverkusen) has boosted our confidence for Sunday," De Gea told the club's official website.

"It was important to kick off with a win; we made a good start and got the three points, which gives us peace of mind.

"We've since had a few days to prepare for City and we're looking forward to the match."

The 22-year-old was also full of praise for attacking duo Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney, with the latter celebrating hitting an impressive milestone of 200 goals for the club on Tuesday.

"Not only did he (Rooney) score goals, he played some great football, worked hard, brought dynamism to the team and played a really great game," he added.

"It’s good for us that he and Robin score goals. It is important; they are key players and this year they will combine to great effect."

Hart calls for calm ahead of Manchester derby

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart has called on fans to behave sensibly in Sunday's derby against Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium.

The 26-year-old was forced to intervene as a home supporter got onto the pitch and lunged for Rio Ferdinand in United's 3-2 win at City last December, minutes after the defender was left bleeding from a head wound after being hit with a coin thrown from the stands.

The England international does not want to see a repeat of the unsavoury scenes that marred last season's derby at Eastlands, and has urged for calm from the spectators.

"There were incidents last year which no-one wants to see repeated," he told reporters. "The eyes of the world will be on this game as usual, and I'm confident our supporters will do the club proud.

"Our fans are the best in the world and we want you to show your passion for the club, but in the right way.

"The derby is one of the most anticipated and exciting games in world football. As players, we are all looking forward to Sunday, and we know that the fans will be too.

"The home support is so important for us, and I know they will be like an extra man for the team on the day.

"As always, we need our fans in full voice, but we also need them to respect the occasion. We want everyone to enjoy the game but be sensible too."

Reigning champions United have emerged victorious in three of the last five Manchester derbies hosted at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League, and will be looking to come out on top again on Sunday.

Farfan: Anything can happen against Bayern

    319301_heroa.jpg

Schalke attacker Jefferson Farfan is optimistic about his side's chances of causing an upset in this weekend's Bundesliga match against Bayern Munich.

The Gelsenkirchen side have been struggling to find their best form domestically in the opening weeks of the 2013-14 campaign and currently sit ninth in the league table with seven points from five games, whereas Bayern are still unbeaten and sit second with 13 points.

Nevertheless, Farfan believes that anything is possible for Schalke at the Veltins Arena on Saturday.

"We obviously will give our all, but we face one of the best teams in Europe. They're German champions and title holders in the Champions League," Farfan told Goal.

"We are playing at home, though, and anything is possible with the support of our fans. We will give our utmost to record a win."

The Peru international then went on to hail the arrival of Kevin-Prince Boateng and Dennis Aogo, but remained cautious about Schalke's title chances.

"Boateng and Aogo have a lot of quality. They've improved the team. Kevin adds a lot in attack and brings creativity to the team. He makes us even stronger," he continued.

"But I won't say that we can win the Bundesliga title now. We are taking things one step at a time and we'll see how things pan out."

Farfan also briefly discussed Schalke's Champions League ambitions and stressed that making it to the knockout stages is their main goal for now.

He added: "We want to progress from the group stages at all costs. It would be great if we could win our section but it would be alright if we came in second as well. The key thing is that we progress."

Schalke beat Steaua Bucharest 3-0 on Wednesday to open their European campaign and lock horns with Basel, who shocked Chelsea, on matchday two.
