Newcastle 2-0 Leeds: Cisse and Gouffran seal place in fourth round

    321500hp2.jpg

Papiss Cisse broke his Newcastle United scoring duck for the season as the Magpies eased past Leeds United 2-0 in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday.

Alan Pardew's men had defeated Morecambe in the previous round, but faced a sterner test against a Leeds side renowned for causing upsets in cup competitions in recent years.

The Championship outfit gave a good account of themselves, but Newcastle were always in command, cruising to a comfortable victory.

Cisse headed in his first goal of the campaign to put Newcastle in front midway through the first half, before Yoan Gouffran wrapped things up with a fine curling strike after the break.

Newcastle made six changes to the side defeated 3-2 by Hull City in the Premier League at the weekend, with Yohan Cabaye and Loic Remy rested, while Leeds boss Brian McDermott made four alterations to the side that lost 2-1 to Burnley in their last outing.

And it was the visitors who created the first chance of the game, with Ross McCormack's chipped effort striking the top of the crossbar.

The hosts were slow out of the blocks, and it took them nine minutes to craft some sort of response, captain Fabricio Coloccini's header cleared off the line after Sylvain Marveaux's corner.

Newcastle grew into the game and they came close again as Gouffran glanced Ameobi's far-post cross wide.

Leeds refused to allow Newcastle to control the play though, and they were again unfortunate not to have taken the lead when Matt Smith's point-blank header was well saved by Tim Krul.

Still, despite all Leeds' positive attacking play, it was the hosts who broke the deadlock, Cisse heading in from close-range following great work down the left-hand side from Sammy Ameobi.

Ameobi continued to trouble the Leeds' defence, and the England Under-21 international was at the forefront of another Newcastle attack in the closing stages of the half, his delivery headed over by Mathieu Debuchy.

McDermott's side provided a persistent attacking threat throughout the contest, as Smith was denied by Krul for a second time in the early stages of the second half after he had leapt higher than Mike Williamson to direct a header towards goal.

Newcastle weathered that spell of pressure, though, and 22 minutes into the second half they secured their place in the fourth round, Gouffran collecting a pass from Ameobi before turning and firing a superb right-footed finish past a despairing Paddy Kenny and into the top corner.

Pardew's side had chances to add to the lead, substitute Gabriel Obertan was denied by Kenny before Cheick Tiote blazed over, but a two-goal lead proved to more than enough to see off the Yorkshire club.

Birmingham 3-1 Swansea: Defending champions crash out

    321499hp2.jpg

Capital One Cup holders Swansea fell at the first hurdle of this season's competition as Championship outfit and 2011 winners Birmingham City beat them 3-1 on Wednesday.

Lee Clark's men grabbed the lead early in the second half thanks to goals from Dan Burn, Matt Green and Tom Adeyemi, much to the delight of the home crowd at St Andrew's after their Premier League opponents had enjoyed the better of the first period.

Wilfried Bony scored in injury time for Michael Laudrup's side, but it was a case of too little, too late for the visitors.

There were 10 changes from the Swansea side that beat Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday, with Jonjo Shelvey the only man to keep his place as summer recruits Alejandro Pozuelo and Bony started.

Birmingham boss Clark, on the other hand, made just five alterations from the team that overcame Sheffield Wednesday 4-1 in the Championship last time out, with Jesse Lingard the most notable absentee.

The 20-year-old, who joined on a season-long loan from Manchester United last week, scored all four goals in their win at St Andrew’s on Saturday but cannot play in cup competitions due to a clause in his contract.

But despite the talented youngster’s absence, Birmingham created the first goalscoring opportunity of the game after 13 minutes when Chris Burke fired over the bar from the edge of the area.

However, Swansea almost took the lead just minutes later when Bony hit the bar before Pozuelo also clattered the woodwork with the follow-up.

The Premier League side then began to assert their authority on the game and the Ivory Coast international went close again shortly after, as his powerful shot was blocked in the 30th minute.

Roland Lamah was next to have an effort on goal for Laudrup’s men, but his shot was kept out by the feet of Birmingham keeper Colin Doyle as half-time drew in.

The home side came out the more energized team after the break though, and they soon created a chance as Matt Green forced Gerhard Tremmel into a great save with five minutes gone.

Their pressure soon paid off, and it was Burn who broke the deadlock as the defender netted an unmarked header in the 55th minute.

And things then went from bad to worse for Swansea just minutes later as Green met a cross from Mitch Hancox to leave Tremmel with no chance.

Laudrup then opted to make changes in an attempt to change the flow of the game, with Alvaro Vazquez and Jose Canas replacing Jonathan de Guzman and Shelvey.

But Birmingham were rampant by this point and increased their advantage when Adeyemi capitalised on a Canas error to claim the third with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Bony then headed home from a Wayne Routledge corner in the dying seconds, but it was no more than a consolation for Laudrup's side as their defence of the cup ended prematurely.

:love:Manchester United 1-0 Liverpool: Chicharito strike enough for hosts as Suarez returns

    321419hp2.jpg

Manchester United ruined Luis Suarez's Liverpool return as they recorded a 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Wednesday night to book their place in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup thanks to a solitary strike from Chicharito.

The Mexico international struck early in the second half, while Suarez, returning to action after a 10-match ban for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic last season, came closest to levelling the scores with a free kick that clipped the crossbar.

The Uruguayan was restored to a strong Reds starting line-up, who had already defeated United in the Premier League earlier this season, while Kolo Toure continued to deputise at right-back.

David Moyes, meanwhile, made a number of alterations, with the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Michael Carrick excluded, though Wayne Rooney was handed the captain's armband as he started in attack.

Despite United making wholesale changes, the home side undoubtedly started the match with greater fluency than their rivals, with Nani's powerful left-footed drive forcing Martin Skrtel into a block within the opening five minutes.

However, Liverpool soon fashioned a chance of their own, only for Daniel Sturridge to inexplicably leave a pin-point cross into the box from Steven Gerrard seemingly in the belief that a team-mate was poised to score.

Suarez was presented with two promising opportunities soon after, but opted to shoot when he should have passed for the first before doing the opposite with his next chance as the visitors failed to find the breakthrough.

The Liverpool forward came even closer soon after, but could not catch up with a slightly loose touch from Jose Enrique's long pass, allowing David de Gea to gratefully collect at his feet. Both sides had lacked quality when it mattered in the first half, though it did not take long for the deadlock to be broken in the second period.

The hosts underlined their intent as they burst forward in the opening seconds of the half, winning a corner almost immediately as Mamadou Sakho failed to clear. And, after easily escaping the attentions of Enrique in the box, Chicharito side-footed home to put United ahead.

Liverpool were somewhat unfortunate to go behind, and rallied well to create a number of good chances soon after; Jordan Henderson side-footed wide from inside the box before Suarez dragged an effort the wrong side of the post.

Victor Moses then had the visitors' best opportunity of the match in the 70th minute, but failed to direct his diving header either side of De Gea and allowed the Spaniard to palm the ball away.

Then, after substitute Shinji Kagawa's rasping effort had clipped the bar following a quick break, Suarez matched the Japanese by doing the same with a self-won free kick that had deflected off the wall and onto the woodwork.

Liverpool's search for an equaliser left a number of spaces for United to exploit, and Rooney almost made the visitors pay as he brought two brilliant saves from Simon Mignolet, but neither side could find the extra goal as United held on to take their place in the next round.

Elche 1-2 Real Madrid: Last-gasp Ronaldo penalty rescues Blancos

    321476hp2.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo's stoppage-time penalty saved Real Madrid from a shock draw to newly promoted Elche in a dramatic and controversial end on Wednesday.

After a goalless first half at the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero, it did not take Madrid long to find the lead as Elche became the 27th different La Liga side which Ronaldo has scored against.

Elche thought they had rescued a point in stoppage time when Richmond Boakye equalised, but Ronaldo buried an even later penalty to give Real a fortuitous win.

The hosts went into the match as La Liga’s only winless team this season and coach Fran Escriba made three changes to the side which lost to Osasuna last time out.

Miroslav Stevanovic, Fidel Chaves and Richmond Boakye sat out, with Manu Del Moral, Carles Gil and Javi Marquez taking their places.

Real Madrid hammered Getafe 4-1 at the weekend and their team on Wednesday included three alterations. Nacho, Daniel Carvajal and Asier Illarramendi were replaced by Fabio Coentrao, Ramos and Luka Modric.

The hosts went into the match as underdogs but began the encounter impressively and only failed to take an early lead thanks to an excellent save from Diego Lopez as he tipped Lomban’s header wide.

Valencia loanee Gil looked lively and produced a lovely chip to the back post for Javi Marquez, but again Lopez rescued the Real defence with a smart save.

Ancelotti’s side grew into the contest after the 20th minute and Ramos should have opened the scoring, but the unmarked defender could only head Cristiano Ronaldo’s free kick at Manu Herrera.

Although Elche continued to look promising going forward, Madrid should have ended the first half in the lead, but Herrera made another important stop, this time parrying Angel Di Maria’s low effort from the left.

Madrid wasted their chances in the first half, but seven minutes into the second period Ronaldo broke the deadlock as his powerful free kick took a deflection off the wall and squeezed past Herrera.

The hosts were enraged soon later when the referee failed to give them a penalty for Sami Khedira’s tackle on Damian Suarez, but the Uruguayan was correctly given a yellow card for diving.

The final 15 minutes saw Elche press for an equaliser and after Ramos missed another headed chance, substitute Boakye flicked a cross past Lopez at the front post as a draw looked certain.

However, the referee made a controversial call to penalise Carlos Sanchez for a tug on Pepe in the penalty area, and Ronaldo fired home from 12 yards to secure the three points in dramatic fashion.

West Brom 1-1 Arsenal (3-4 on pens): Monreal the hero as Gunners progress to face Chelsea

    321445hp2.jpg

Arsenal were taken all the way to a penalty shoot-out by West Brom in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday night at the Hawthorns, as Nacho Monreal's spot-kick sealed the Gunners' passage to the next round.

The north London club's 20-year-old German starlet Thomas Eisfeld gave the away side the lead in the second half, latching onto a perfectly weighted through-ball from Nicklas Bendtner, before the Baggies responded through Saido Berahino.

But with the scores still level after extra-time, the match went to a penalty shoot-out. Serge Gnabry was the first player to miss, giving West Brom the advantage, but Craig Dawson and Morgan Amalfitano both failed to beat Lukasz Fabianski as Monreal converted the final penalty to win the tie.

Steve Clarke made eight changes to the side that beat Sunderland 3-0 on Saturday, with only Youssouf Mulumbu, Scott Sinclair and Stephane Sessegnon retaining their places.Arsenal too took the opportunity to rest key personnel, with Per Mertesacker and Serge Gnabry the only survivors from the 3-1 win over Stoke City, while Bendtner made his first start for the club in two years.

West Brom had the first chance in the 25th minute when Dawson's looping header from Graham Dorrans' corner required Fabianski to tip over the crossbar.
Arsene Wenger's side were then lucky not to have 18-year-old debutant Isaac Hayden sent off. The midfielder’s sliding tackle on Mulumbu was late and robust but referee Robert Madley deemed it only a yellow card.

West Brom produced the best effort of the match to that point on the stroke of half-time, when Reid’s 35-yard free kick dipped and just grazed the top of the bar, but that near miss saw the teams go in level.

Mulumbu forced the first genuine save of the night on the hour mark, when he teed himself up for a volley that Fabianski parried out for a corner, but West Brom failed to orchestrate clear openings and were duly punished as Arsenal went ahead in the 62nd minute.Bendtner’s sideways pass into the box was met by the run of Eisfeld and the 20-year-old showed good composure to coolly slot beyond Luke Daniels at the near post.

That goal should have allowed the visitors to exercise control of the game but, with 20 minutes remaining, the home fans were on their feet celebrating an equaliser.
Arsenal failed to clear their lines from a West Brom corner and a dinked cross from Dorrans was met by Berahino, who headed home from eight yards despite Fabianski getting a hand to the ball. Both teams pushed forward for a winner in the ensuing minutes, but with neither able to find a breakthrough, the game headed for extra time.

Bendtner could have wrapped it up in the 97th minute when Serge Gnabry sent him racing clear, but the Dane took too long to get his shot away and allowed Dawson to recover and make a last-ditch tackle.

And with just four minutes remaining, substitute Amalfitano thought he had won it for West Brom but saw his drilled effort cannon back off the bar. Markus Rosenburg went close moments later, before Sinclair sliced a volley well wide from close range.

That meant the match headed to penalties where, after two successful spot-kicks for the hosts and one for the away side, Gnabry saw his effort saved.

But Dawson and Amalfitano both fired wide for the home side, leaving Monreal the chance to win the tie, and the Spaniard made no mistake as he fired high into the roof of the net to set up a fourth round clash with Chelsea.

Bologna 3-3 AC Milan: Robinho inspires Rossoneri comeback

    321385hp2.jpg

Robinho helped inspire a comeback which rescued a point for AC Milan in their 3-3 draw with Bologna, preventing their third defeat in their opening five games of the Serie A season.

Ignazio Abate scored a dramatic injury-time equaliser to deny the hosts their first win of the season, taking advantage of a defensive mix-up to fire home at the back post in the 92nd minute to give Milan a share of the spoils.

The visitors had looked dead and buried with just a minute of normal time left, but Brazilian forward Robinho swept home on 89 minutes to make it 3-2 and add to Andrea Poli’s first-half goal.

Bologna had stunned Milan by opening up a 3-1 lead in the second period with a double from Uruguayan midfielder Diego Laxalt and a header from Jonathan Cristaldo.

Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri was forced into a change in attack, with Robinho handed a rare start in place of leading scorer Mario Balotelli, suspended for three games following his post-match sending off in the home defeat to Napoli last week.

Stefano Pioli made wholesale changes for Bologna with six players recalled to the starting line-up, including defender Andrea Mantovani for the suspended Cesare Natali, who emulated Balotelli by both scoring and being dismissed in his team’s last outing, a 2-1 defeat to Torino.

Milan were dominant in possession from the outset and duly took the lead on 12 minutes, midfielder Poli finishing across goalkeeper Gianluca Curci after being expertly played in by Robinho’s through-ball.

The hosts’ first real chance did not arrive until the half-hour mark, when Alessandro Diamanti’s shot on the turn was beaten away by Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati.

But the home side did not have to wait long for an equaliser, Laxalt beating the offside trap on 33 minutes to fire home left-footed inside Abbiati’s near-post.

Milan reacted well to Laxalt’s strike, and were only denied a half-time lead by Curci, who pulled off a brilliant double-save on 42 minutes to block both Robinho’s effort and Birsa’s follow-up.

Bologna came out with renewed impetus in the second period, and took the lead on 52 minutes when Laxalt out-jumped Abate at the back post to head home a teasing cross from Greek winger Lazaros Christodoulopoulos.

The hosts then increased their advantage 10 minutes later, when Argentine striker Cristaldo glanced in Diamanti’s pinpoint left-wing centre.

Milan continued to press, but it looked like Bologna would be able to hang on and claim the victory until Robinho bundled home after Curci had saved Sulley Muntari's initial effort.

And the draw was sealed by Abate’s late intervention as he too pounced on a rebound, after Curci had denied Robinho a double.

Chievo 1-2 Juventus: Bernardini own goal settles it for Serie A champions

    321391hp2.jpg

Juventus came back from a goal behind to beat Chievo 2-1 on Wednesday to retain their unbeaten streak among the big guns at the top of Serie A.

Cyril Thereau put the hosts ahead in the 28th minute before the champions hit back in the second half through Fabio Quagliarella and an Alessandro Bernardini own goal to seal all three points and maintain their unbeaten record this season.

Giuseppe Sannino made four changes to the Chievo side that beat Udinese 2-1 at the weekend with Claiton, Simone Bentivoglio, Gennaro Sardo and Thereau all recalled to the starting XI.

Juve boss Antonio Conte also made signifcant alterations to his team, with five switches from Sunday's 2-1 win over Chievo’s neighbours Hellas Verona, where they also fought back from a goal down.

Gianluigi Buffon and Giorgio Chiellini returned in goal and defence, with Marco Storari, Leonardo Bonucci and Carlos Tevez among those to drop to the bench.

After a cagey opening to the game, Juve began to look more threatening with Fernando Llorente, Quagliarella and Paul Pogba all firing over in the space of five minutes.

But, despite those chances for the Turin-based outfit, it was the hosts who took the lead just before the half-hour mark.

Buffon's poor clearance was brought down by Sardo, and his early pass was swept home first time by Thereau from just inside the area.

The visitors responded to falling behind brightly, with Andrea Pirlo's shot from the edge of the box deflected just over the crossbar.

Quagliarella then stung the palms of Christian Puggioni, the Chievo goalkeeper beating away an effort from distance in the 38th minute.

And Llorente wasted a golden chance to equalise two minutes before the break when Mauricio Isla's shot was deflected into his path, but the Spain international's weak header was easily gathered by Puggioni.

A minute after the interval, however, Juve were level thanks to Quagliarella. It was a scrappy equaliser, with the Italy international seeing his initial header saved, before hitting both bar and post with the rebound and finally stabbing the ball in from right on the goalline.

Two minutes later, the Sannino side thought they had retaken the lead when Alberto Paloschi converted the follow up after Buffon's fumble, but the referee's assistant had raised his flag, although replays showed Paloschi to be well onside.

As the game opened up with the hour mark approaching, Claudio Marchisio and Chiellini were both denied by Puggioni from range, with Llorente sending another weak header straight into the keeper's arms.

Juve continued to press though and went ahead in the 65th minute, as Bernardini deflected home Pogba's wicked cross from the right-hand side with Llorente waiting to pounce.

The remainder of the game saw no clear-cut chances as Conte's men closed out the match to move up to third in Serie A.

Valenciennes 0-1 Paris Saint-Germain: Clinical Cavani gives Parisiens win

    321344hp2.jpg

Edinson Cavani's clinical finish on the stroke of half-time was enough to give Paris Saint-Germain a 1-0 win over Valenciennes on Wednesday.

The champions headed into Wednesday's Ligue 1 clash on the back of Sunday's 1-1 draw with early pacesetters Monaco and produced a largely underwhelming performance at the Stade du Hainaut.

However, Cavani proved to be the difference between Laurent Blanc's side and their struggling hosts, as he netted in first-half injury-time to secure all three points for PSG.

Valenciennes made three changes from the side beaten 4-0 by Nice last time out, Gary Kagelmacher replacing Benjamin Angoua in the centre of defence, while David Ducourtioux was chosen ahead of Jose Saez in midfield and Mathieu Dossevi stepped in for Gregory Pujol in the attacking three.

Blanc also opted to shuffle his pack, with Alex coming in for injured captain Thiago Silva and Christophe Jallet and Lucas Digne taking the two full-back spots in place of Gregory van der Wiel and Maxwell respectively.

Javier Pastore also returned instead of Thiago Motta in midfield, and it was the Argentine who created the game's first chance as he surged through the home defence in the third minute before blazing over the bar from a tight angle after playing a neat one-two with Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

But, despite that early opportunity PSG struggled to impose themselves, with Daniel Sanchez's hosts doing most of the pressing as they looked to end a run of five consecutive Ligue 1 defeats.

Chances were few and far between in a dour first half that lacked any real tempo, although Marquinhos did come close to scoring his second goal for Blanc’s side as he headed wide seven minutes before the interval.

Valenciennes were dealt a blow in the closing stages of the first half when experienced defender Rudy Mater was forced off with an injury, to be replaced by Saliou Ciss.

And they then found themselves a goal down just before the break, Cavani slotting a neat finish into the bottom corner in added time after being played in by a deft pass from Ibrahimovic.

PSG made one change at half-time, Zoumana Camara coming on for Alex, and they had Marco Verratti to thank for preserving their advantage just a minute into the second period as the Italian midfielder cleared Lindsay Rose's header off the line.

Valenciennes continued to do most of the pressing in the second period, but their forays forward provided no reward with PSG remaining dangerous on the counter.

Sanchez's men looked to tire as the contest entered the closing stages, Ibrahimovic twice going close for PSG in their quest to kill the match off.

Anthony Le Tallec fired wide of the post with a curling free-kick seven minutes from time for the hosts, but they were not able to claim a point and fell to their sixth straight loss.

David Silva could make Bayern return, reveals Pellegrini

    321163_heroa.jpg

David Silva could return to action for Manchester City's Champions League clash with Bayern Munich next Wednesday, according to Manuel Pellegrini.Silva has not played for City since suffering a thigh injury while on international duty with Spain in August.

And, after Tuesday's 5-0 win over Wigan Athletic in the League Cup, Pellegrini confirmed that the midfielder was unlikely to feature in the Premier League game against Aston Villa on Saturday.

"We'll see if David is fit in the next day," Pellegrini said on Tuesday."The doctor understands better than me what happened – I think maybe for next Saturday I don't think he can play but maybe for next Wednesday against Bayern, he could be fit."

The City boss made 10 changes from the 4-1 win over Manchester United on Sunday for the visit of Wigan, with Micah Richards and Gael Clichy both making their returns from injury.

Pellegrini was pleased to be able to give both players a full 90 minutes. "It was not easy for Micah because he hasn’t played since Bayern Munich in pre-season, it's a long time but I think he did really well because it’s not easy to be out for so long," he continued.

"This match was very important for him and for Clichy, who both came back. It was a useful match for the team."

Juventus must start better - Quagliarella

    321465_heroa.jpg

Juventus forward Fabio Quagliarella has warned his team-mates that they cannot keep going behind if they are to be successful this season.

The Serie A champions surrendered the lead in the fourth successive game on Wednesday as they beat Chievo 2-1 at the Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi, moving up to third in the Serie A table, two points behind leaders Roma.

Cyril Thereau opened the scoring in the 28th minute for the hosts, following a mistake from Gianluigi Buffon, before Quagliarella equalised a minute into the second half with a scrappy effort.

Alessandro Bernardini put through his own net on 65 minutes to hand Antonio Conte's men the win, but the Italy international remains wary that his side keep leaving themselves a mountain to climb.

"We can't keep letting our opponents take the lead," Quagliarella told the Bianconeri's official website.

"It's not a good sign. The coach drummed it into us during the week. It's something that needs to be worked on, even if up until now we've had the character to come back."

Conte praised Wednesday's opponents but went on to laud the fighting qualities shown by his players to recover from the dent of going behind in the first half.

"Hats off to Chievo, they were very organised," the Turin-based club coach said. "We did well to prevent them from breaking on the counterattack, but going forward - especially in the first half - we attacked with very few players.

"That’s something that can happen though, it’s our fourth consecutive game, the sixth for those who played in the international fixtures, and we've rotated many players.

"We know it's a tough league and we'll need to fight in every game to gain a result. To lift our heads and overturn the deficit as we've done in the last two games shows we have important qualities."

Moyes proud of Manchester United's fighting spirit

    321373_heroa.jpg

David Moyes has praised the courage of his Manchester United players after they bounced back from Sunday's derby defeat to beat Liverpool in the Capital One Cup.

The Scot made a number of changes from United's 4-1 loss at the Etihad Stadium, with Shinji Kagawa, Nani and Javier Hernandez among those given a chance to impress.

The Mexican striker took his opportunity, smartly volleying home a corner early in the second half to hand United a 1-0 victory, and Moyes was glad to see his players come out fighting."We had to try to come out and show something a bit better than we had done [against City]," he told Sky Sports.

"We had to bounce back and I thought it was a good result. It's given me a chance to see some players I haven't seen much and it's given me food for thought."Moyes was particularly impressed with Chicarito and praised the 25-year-old's movement in the lead up to his winning goal.

"The movement is great for the goal," he added. "That's what Chicharito is all about. He finds space so well."

Arsenal will host Chelsea in the Capital One Cup fourth round, while Manchester United have been drawn at home against Norwich.

The Red Devils knocked out Liverpool thanks to Chicharito's well-taken goal just after half-time, and their reward is hosting the Canaries, who battled past Watford on Tuesday.

Arsenal were taken all the way to penalties against West Brom at the Hawthorns, but triumphed thanks to Nacho Monreal's penalty. They will now welcome Chelsea to the Emirates Stadium after the Blues beat Swindon 2-0 24 hours earlier.
