Basel 0-1 Schalke: Swiss undone by deadly Draxler

    323736hp2.jpg

Julian Draxler's stunning second-half strike was enough to give Schalke a 1-0 win over Basel on Tuesday evening.

Marco Streller wasted several good opportunities for the hosts and Max Meyer hit the crossbar before Draxler lashed home from the edge of the area just after half-time in a game that was delayed early in the first half due to a Greenpeace protest against Gazprom, sponsors of the competition and of the German side.

The win means leaves Jens Keller's side top of the group, having not lost away in Europe in 12 games.

Basel's Fabian Schar managed to overcome a knee problem in time to receive a place in the starting line-up, while Taulant Xhaka was preferred ahead of Giovanni Sio.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Kyriakos Papadopoulos, Christian Fuchs and Jermaine Jones, were all sidelined for the visitors, although Draxler managed to shake off a knee injury.

Both sides enjoyed a winning start to their Champions League campaigns and came into this contest knowing that another victory would strengthen their position in Group E.

Everyone in the stadium in Basel were left bemused, however, when the game was halted within the first few minutes after Greenpeace activists abseiled from the roof to unveil a banner criticising Gazprom.

When the action restarted after a break of just over five minutes, Schalke soon set about carving out the first opportunity, with Kevin-Prince Boateng firing wide after just over 10 minutes.

The disruption to the game clearly impacted on the rhythm of both sides, with chances few and far between during the opening exchanges.

Basel's best opportunity of the first period came just after the half-hour mark when Streller controlled in the box before attempting an acrobatic effort that forced Timo Hildebrand into a smart save.

Murat Yakin's Basel side began to settle, with Mohamed Salah looking particularly lively, as the hosts continued to look for a breakthrough.

Schalke were dealt a blow just before half-time when winger Jefferson Farfan limped off to be replaced by Adam Szalai.

Streller then headed a whipped Kay Voser cross just past the post.

The visitors responded well after the break and were unlucky not to be ahead when Draxler's teasing cross was only headed as far as Meyer, who sent a crashing strike back off the bar.

Draxler was at the centre of proceedings when Schalke took the lead just a couple of minutes later. A Dennis Aogo corner found its way to the 20-year-old on the edge of the box, who rifled a sweetly-struck half-volley past a despairing Yann Sommer.

Schalke predictably began to look confident in the middle of the park, although Salah continued to pose a threat to the visitors' defence.

Salah was on hand 15 minutes from time to force Hildebrand to palm a stinging effort around the post.

Yakin threw on Matias Delgado and David Degen in an attempt to unlock the Schalke defence, but the hosts continued to threaten.

Draxler nearly doubled his tally late on, but could only fire over after a good run down the left-hand side, as Keller's side held onto a well-earned win.

Benitez rues slow start against Arsenal

    323801_heroa.jpg

Rafa Benitez bemoaned Napoli's poor start in their 2-0 Champions League defeat to Arsenal on Tuesday night.

The Serie A outfit were two goals down after just 15 minutes of the Group F encounter at the Emirates Stadium, as the Spaniard was consigned to a first professional loss as Partenopei coach.Arsenal's record signing Mesut Ozil scored the first with a sublime side-footed effort after eight minutes, before then providing for Olivier Giroud to tap home the second.

And Benitez was disappointed with his team for losing focus, despite warning his squad of Arsenal's threat before the game."We started very badly," the former Liverpool boss told reporters after the game. "When you are 2-0 down early in the game against opponents like Arsenal everything becomes very difficult.

"We played a bit better in the second half but it was difficult to come back. We knew it was a tough game against Arsenal but we still think we can say a word in this group.

"I had told the players to be focused from the start because I was expecting Arsenal to start at full pace – but we still conceded twice. "We made a few mistakes tonight, I'm not sure if we lacked experience but when you make mistakes at this level you certainly pay for them."

Napoli were without Arsenal's transfer-window target Gonzalo Higuain, as the striker was ruled out with a calf injury.

And Benitez conceded that his absence may have played a part in the loss, adding: "Higuain is a very important player for us, we tried a couple of different solutions to cope without him but didn't manage to score."

Klopp confident of Champions League progression

    319664_heroa.jpg

Jurgen Klopp was bullish about Borussia Dortmund's chances of reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League after their 3-0 win over Olympique de Marseille.

The 46-year-old coach watched from the stands at Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday as a Robert Lewandowski brace and a Marco Reus free kick ensured Dortmund picked up their first win of this season's competition.

Klopp was serving a touchline ban after being sent off during Dortmund's Group F opening defeat against Napoli, but claimed to be relaxed over any potential extension of his ban.

"If the team plays the way they did today, I'm allowed to relax sitting in the stands," said the German trainer, who will find out on Wednesday whether the ban is increased.

"It was a great game and we played well against a quality opponent. Now we are in a solid position in our group.

"We had to play at a high pace. If we'd run just a few kilometres less today we would have struggled."

Lewandowski added that he was pleased with how he and his team-mates performed, as they secured their first ever victory over Marseille.

"We executed our plan perfectly," said the Poland international. "We are satisfied with the result but we have to repeat this performance the next time we come out.

"Marseille didn't have any real chances today, which is very satisfying."

Martino: Brown challenge on Neymar deserved red

    323739_heroa.jpg

Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino believes the referee was right to hand Celtic midfielder Scott Brown a red card during his side’s 1-0 Champions League victory over Celtic on Tuesday.

The Bhoys skipper was dismissed after appearing to kick out in Neymar’s direction after having fouled the Brazilian just before the hour mark.

The Blaugrana attacker was jeered by the home crowd at Celtic Park for his reaction to the incident in which little contact was made, but Martino insisted that the red card was justified.

"The sending off was correct, the referee saw it," the Barca boss told reporters after the game.

The former Newell’s coach went on to hail his side’s performance as their finest of the season so far.

"It was our most complete game," he argued. "It was our best of the season. We produced when we had to. We had control of the game at all times.

"We tried to neutralise them and play our game. Except for one shot from which Victor Valdes made a great save, we had no troubles and had the ball."

Barcelona were without Lionel Messi due to a hamstring injury and while Martino admitted his side did miss the Argentina international, he insisted his they must continue perform in his absence.

"It is impossible to not miss him, but we have to face the music without it and play good matches," he claimed.

    Allegri: Milan deserved to win

    323768_heroa.jpg

AC Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri felt his side deserved more out of Tuesday night's 1-1 Champions League draw with Ajax.

The Rossoneri appeared set for defeat when defender Stefano Denswil headed the hosts into the lead as he rose highest to meet Lasse Schone's corner in the 90th minute.

However, Milan quickly responded to earn a share of the spoils, Mario Balotelli converting from the spot after substitute Mike van der Hoorn had been adjudged to have hauled down the Italy international in the fourth minute of injury time.

Still, Allegri felt his side deserved more from the game, and bemoaned the manner in which they conceded.

"We tried to slow the game down and we defended well in the first 45 minutes," the coach told reporters after the game.

"In the second half, Ajax could not keep the same level of performance. We started to play better and we should have won the game.

"Unfortunately we conceded a cheap goal on a corner and now we must feel satisfied with the draw."

Allegri reserved praise for goalscorer Balotelli, though, who went close earlier in the game when he had a curling effort tipped on to the crossbar by Ajax keeper Jasper Cillessen.

"Balotelli played well," the 46-year-old added. "He went close when he hit the bar with a great shot. He is a very important player for us."

Ozil brilliance allows Wenger to celebrate 17 years in style

    323671_heroa.jpg

On the day that Arsene Wenger celebrated his 17th anniversary as Arsenal manager, the class of 2013 produced a performance that rolled back the years.

This was Arsenal at their best, a display that harked back to the famous unbeaten Invincibles side in the inventiveness of their passing, movement off the ball and resilience at the back.

The attacking midfield triumvirate of Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey and Tomas Rosicky whirred and blurred in the final third, made Napoli players dizzy as they interchanged positions and popped up all over the pitch.

Ozil put the Gunners ahead with a brilliant, almost carved, finish from 18 yards in the eighth minute before darting behind the Napoli defence seven minutes later to put the second goal on a plate for Olivier Giroud.

Wenger has now, with Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement, been around far longer than any other Premier League manager and, on this evidence, a contract extension beyond next summer is guaranteed.

The build-up to the match was dominated by stats surrounding Wenger’s reign but the team's brilliance in his 965th match in charge showed why there is more to come.

Arsenal have now won 10 games in a row in all competitions, the talk of the Gunners being in crisis after just one game of the season - the opening day defeat to Aston Villa - exposed as nonsense.

Wenger has gone eight years without a trophy but the first-half against Napoli was as good as a performance as he would have seen during the barren spell. He described it afterwards as "the best for a long time".

What a way to celebrate a man who has come under so much pressure and faced so many questions in recents years.

It was a reminder of what Wenger has brought to the club over the last 17 years, of why the geeky looking professor was seemingly plucked from nowhere to take charge of one of the biggest clubs in English football.

Wenger, 17 years on, is still giving the fans nights to remember.

In Ozil, he has a player who can compare to the great Dennis Bergkamp. The £42 million summer signing sparkled under the lights in north London, scoring his first goal for the club in a performance described as “absolutely amazing” by his manager.

The German tired in the second-half but he had done his job by half-time, the team roared off at the break like heroes by fans used to spitting poison towards the players in recent years.

Off the bench came Jack Wilshere. Soon Santi Cazorla will return from injury, too. Wenger sides are characterised by technical, inventive players and this team is no different.

Matthieu Flamini snapped in to tackles and protected the back four; Laurent Koscielny never gave Napoli’s forwards an inch of space; Giroud led the line with skill and confidence.

17 years, not always at the top but always in the mix. A few downs, but far more ups. Wenger marked this anniversary in style - and with a performance that showed why Arsenal fans are now hoping for far bigger celebrations at the end of the season.

Neymar exaggerated minimal contact from Brown, says Lennon

    323710_heroa.jpg

Celtic coach Neil Lennon has criticised the dismissal of midfielder Scott Brown in Tuesday's 1-0 Champions League loss to Barcelona.

The Bhoys skipper was sent off in the 59th minute of the contest in Glasgow for kicking Neymar in the back, after he had brought the attacker down in an attempt to prevent the Brazil international from surging forward.

Barcelona went on to capitalise on their numerical advantage, Cesc Fabregas heading home Alexis Sanchez's cross 14 minutes from time, with the goal coming shortly after James Forrest and Charlie Mulgrew had both gone close at the other end.

Lennon was quick to denounce referee Stephane Lannoy's decision to show Brown the red card, and felt that Neymar's reaction to Brown's kick was unnecessary.

"I'm not convinced it is [a red card], if there is any contact, it's minimal. It changed the game, it's hard enough playing Barcelona with 11 men," the Northern Irishman told ITV Sport.

"He [Neymar] has a reputation in the game, he's a brilliant player, but sometimes he exaggerates things a little."

Fraser Forster produced three excellent stops to prevent Barcelona from adding to their lead in the closing stages, but they were to left to rue the missed opportunities that ultimately cost them at least a point.

"I can't speak highly enough of the players," Lennon added.

"There was a brilliant save from (Victor) Valdes and Charlie should do better with the header.

"I didn't remember Fraser having a lot to do but then he pulled off three great saves. Valdes had to make the better saves."

Celtic's defeat has left them bottom of Group H, with two defeats from two games played.

Wenger hails 'amazing' Ozil after Napoli win

    323671_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger heaped praise on Mesut Ozil's all-action display in Arsenal's 2-0 Champions League victory over Napoli.

The Germany international midfielder scored his first goal for the club since his deadline-day move from Real Madrid when he side-footed home superbly from Aaron Ramsey's cross with just eight minutes gone.

Ozil, Arsenal's record signing, then turned provider as his cut back allowed Olivier Giroud to tap home seven minutes later to ensure Wenger celebrated 17 years in charge of the club in style.

Arsenal were more conservative in their approach in the second half against Rafael Benitez's side as the Premier League leaders looked to retain their comfortable advantage.

Wenger was particularly glowing in his appraisal of Ozil's performance after the game, as he told Sky Sports: "(In the) first half he was absolutely amazing.

"Everything was in there. Collective skill, individual skill, finishing. All that you dream to see in the stand when you come to see football.

"It's good (for Ozil to get his first goal). When you take too long to score it is on your mind but he got rid of that."

Arsenal now top Group F after defeating Marseille 2-1 in their opening fixture.

Wenger believes the club's next two fixtures in the Champions League against Borussia Dortmund are crucial to their progress to the round of 16.

"We can not start any better," he continued. "The next two will be the deciders.

"We want to come back after the international break and play like that against Dortmund."
