Manchester City 1-3 Bayern Munich: Robben & Ribery combine to crush Pellegrini’s men

    324141hp2.jpg

Manchester City fell to a 3-1 defeat to European champions Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Bayern's win was their club-record seventh Champions League victory in a row and it was Franck Ribery who put the reigning champions ahead seven minutes in before Thomas Muller made it two after the interval.

A first defeat at home for Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini was confirmed when the impressive Arjen Robben got in on the act just before the hour mark, with Alvaro Negredo grabbing the hosts' consolation late on prior to a red card for Jerome Boateng.

Micah Richards started for the first time under Pellegrini, while the Chilean was also able to name Sergio Aguero in his starting XI after the Argentina international missed Saturday's Premier League defeat to Aston Villa. David Silva was among the substitutes following his recovery from a thigh injury.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola opted to play Thomas Muller in an advanced role, replacing Mario Mandzukic, while Mario Gotze was named on the bench once more as he continues his return to full fitness following the ankle injury that he sustained during the Super Cup win over Chelsea.

David Alaba also made his 25th appearance in the Champions League, more than any other Austrian player in the competition's history.

Ribery caught City cold early on in the Group D clash as he edged the visitors ahead with a stunning long-range strike. The France international cut in from the left wing to beat Joe Hart at his near post and set the tone at the Etihad Stadium.

Toni Kroos then saw an effort deflected just wide 13 minutes later as Bayern continued to control proceedings.

Robben went close on the half-hour mark as he comfortably went past Matija Nastasic and fired across goal, though Muller was unable to get a touch and divert it home.

Bayern enjoyed 67 per cent possession in the first half but it was the home side who began brighter after the interval, keeping the ball well without endangering Manuel Neuer's goal.

But Robben threatened again eight minutes into the half, with the Dutchman's effort from outside the area deflecting just wide of Hart's right-hand post.

And Muller doubled Bayern's lead five minutes short of the hour mark after evading Gael Clichy and calmly controlling a long ball from Dante.

With Hart looming, the Germany international rounded the City goalkeeper and tapped home to double the visitors' lead.

Sensationally, Bayern were three ahead within the hour as Robben capped a fine display with a deserved goal.

After a quick counter, Robben twisted Nastasic inside out before firing past Hart at his near post to put the Bundesliga champions out of sight.

Substitute Negredo pulled a goal back for the home side after being introduced for Edin Dzeko, however, the close-season signing turning neatly inside the area before curling an effort past Neuer.

Amd Boateng saw red for a foul on Yaya Toure four minutes from time, with substitute Silva striking the crossbar from the subsequent free-kick. It mattered little, however.

Juventus 2-2 Galatasaray: Last gasp Bulut strike leaves Bianconeri searching for first Champions League win

    324080hp2.jpg

Roberto Mancini enjoyed an impressive start to his Galatasaray career thanks to a 2-2 draw away to Juventus in the UEFA Champions League.

Didier Drogba put Galatasaray in front before late goals from Arturo Vidal and Fabio Quagliarella looked to have given Juventus all three points.

Umut Bulut's dramatic leveller, though, ensured that Mancini's tenure began with an encouraging performance and result in Turin.

Antonio Conte made the surprising decision to leave Fernando Llorente on the bench as Stephan Lichtsteiner, Andrea Pirlo and Mirko Vucinic all came into the starting XI.

Mancini was in the dugout against his boyhood club after joining Turkish giants Galatasaray on a three-year deal on Monday. The former Manchester City boss wasted no time in making changes, with six players coming into the first team, including Albert Riera and Felipe Melo.

Mancini went with a five-man midfield after Galatasaray lost 6-1 to Real Madrid in their first Group B match and it was causing plenty of problems for Juventus, who had to use the long ball to try and break through the organised visitors' defence.

Drogba gave the visitors the lead in the 36th minute when a poor back pass from Leonardo Bonucci left Gianluigi Buffon stranded and the former Chelsea striker nipped in to place the ball into the back of an empty net.

On the stroke of half-time, Quagliarella could have scored when he found space at the near post but Fernando Muslera was alert to thwart the danger.

Juventus continued to struggle in the second half and Conte introduced Llorente as he looked to find a way back into the game.

Conte's men got their reward in the 78th minute when Quagliarella was brought down by Nordin Amrabat and Vidal coolly stepped up before smashing the resulting penalty into the top corner to give Muslera no chance.

Galatasaray lost their momentum and the home side capitalised when Quagliarella got on the end of a perfectly-weighted Pirlo cross to head home in the 87th minute.

With the home crowd still celebrating Quagliarella's goal, Galatasaray struck back immediately and pulled a goal back from the kick off.

Drogba's flick on was met by Bulut who got enough power on his shot to guide it past Buffon in the Juventus goal.

Carlos Tevez and Llorente went close late on for the Serie A champions, but they failed to deny Mancini a dream start.

'Ronaldo was the match-winner' - Solbakken

    324178_heroa.jpg

Copenhagen boss Stale Solbakken believes that Cristiano Ronaldo was the "match-winner" in his team's 4-0 defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old fired the Blancos into a 2-0 lead in the Champions League tie, before a further double from Angel Di Maria within the final 20 minutes capped another free-scoring performance in Europe's elite competition.

Solbakken believes that errors were made by his team but took nothing away from the former Manchester United forward's performance, who he thinks was the crucial factor in the clash at the Santiago Bernabeu.

"Cristiano's first goal could have been avoided. It was our mistake," the 45-year-old told reporters. "But I cannot criticise us for the second goal - he came charging into the area and scored. He was the match-winner.

"He was quiet for a while, but then he made the difference in the decisive moments."

Carlo Ancelotti's men, who coasted to a 6-1 victory over Galatasaray in gameweek one, remain at the summit of Group B, four points clear of second-placed Juventus and five points adrift of Copenhagen and Roberto Mancini's men.

Di Maria: I deserve Madrid starting spot

    324171_heroa.jpg

Angel Di Maria is hopeful that his performance in Real Madrid's 4-0 victory over Copenhagen has convinced coach Carlo Ancelotti to keep him ahead of the likes of Gareth Bale in the first team.

The Argentine was on target twice in the routing of Stale Solbakken's men in the Champions League on Wednesday, with Cristiano Ronaldo bagging the other two in the comfortable Santiago Bernabeu win.

The €100 million man was left out of the Blancos' squad for the European clash through injury, but Di Maria is hoping that his display will make Ancelotti think twice before dropping him in future team selections.

"I keep trying to convince the coach that I want to be in the starting XI," the 25-year-old told Canal Plus.

"I thought we played a great match. We changed the system to three up front and it worked well. The coach has told us that he is very happy."

Real Madrid extended their lead in Group B to four points, as second-placed Juventus - who Ancelotti's men face on October 23 - drew with Galatasaray in Turin.

Iniesta: I want to retire with Barcelona

    315354_heroa.jpg

Andres Iniesta has expressed a desire to end his career at Barcelona in light of reports that will not extend his contract with the club.

Speculation has raged over the 29-year-old's future at Camp Nou after the Spain international allegedly snubbed the club's attempts to tie him to a new deal.

However, the World Cup winner - whose current deal expires in 2015 - has said that it would be a "dream" to see out the remainder of his playing days in the colours of the Blaugrana.

"The club and I want the same thing - that is to close a deal," he told RAC1.

"I’ve been at Barcelona since I was 12 and my dream is to end my career here. I feel that my best years are ahead of me and I want to spend them here at Barca. It is my objective to retire here."

Iniesta was given a standing ovation by the home supporters inside Parkhead upon being substituted in the 1-0 victory over Celtic on Tuesday, a reception has left a lasting impression on the midfielder.

He added: "The ovation I got from the Celtic fans when I was subbed off moved me."

'Man City really bad against Bayern' - Pellegrini

    324208_heroa.jpg

Manuel Pellegrini has criticised Manchester City's performance following their 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

City were outplayed by the reigning champions in their Champions League Group D clash at the Etihad Stadium thanks to goals from Franck Ribery, Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben.

But while Joe Hart was beaten at his near post for two of the German side's three goals, Pellegrini was more concerned by his team's overall showing.

"We played really bad today - it's not the team we've seen every week in the Premier League and I think that was the worst thing," he told reporters.

"We didn't have possession and we didn't do enough to have more. Of course Bayern always have a lot of the ball but today wasn't a good day for us.

"It's your duty as journalists to analyse individual players, I think we didn't play well but of course we could do better on the goals, not only the goalkeeper."

Meanwhile, Micah Richards, who was named in the starting line-up for the first time under Pellegrini, admitted that the Bundesliga side were worthy winners.

"We knew they were a good side and they showed it today," he told Sky Sports. "That's why they're the champions.

"We have to hold our hands up and say we got beaten by the better team."

Ancelotti: Bale is not happy - he wants to play

    322604_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has admitted that Gareth Bale is frustrated at missing the Spanish side's 4-0 win over Copenhagen in the Champions League, but says the Welsh winger will be back to full fitness following the forthcoming international break.

Madrid overcame the Danish champions with a double apiece from from Cristiano Ronaldo and Angel Di Maria, but Bale was forced to watch on from the sidelines as he recovers from a thigh injury.

Ancelotti revealed that the €100 million summer signing from Tottenham will miss the weekend trip to Levante, but believes the 24-year-old can catch up with his team-mates during the subsequent stop in domestic action for World Cup qualifiers.

"It wasn't possible for him to play," the Italian coach explained. "He had a knock and we did an X-ray, but it didn't show up anything special. We are waiting for him to recover.

"He has not been 100 per cent, but after two weeks he will be in top shape. It's normal he is not happy - he wants to play. He is very excited and it's not a problem - now there is time for him to reach optimum fitness and to avoid [further] injuries."

Ancelotti, meanwhile, was happy with Madrid's reaction following Saturday's derby defeat at home to Atletico.

"It was a good game," he said. "We started well, with intensity and balance. Then, after Cristiano's [first] goal, we were slower, but we recovered our intensity and scored some more goals late on. The team's attitude was good.

"We tried to play with Cristiano and Di Maria more open, and create more chances from crosses. The first and second goals were good combinations and we made use of the wings. The three midfielders, [Asier] Illarramendi, [Sami] Khedira and [Luka] Modric, all had good games."

Robben: I didn't expect Man City to be so easy

    324142_heroa.jpg

Arjen Robben has revealed that Bayern Munich did not expect to overcome Manchester City with such ease in Wednesday night's 3-1 Champions League win.

The Dutchman, 29, scored the third goal for the Bavarians after Franck Ribery and Thomas Muller gave the visitors a cushion and - though Alvaro Negredo bagged a consolation goal - the Blues never looked likely to get anything from the game.

"I didn't expect an easy game like that," he told Sky Sports.

"That's a big compliment to us," he added to NOS. "I expected more from City to be honest.

"We were given a lot of space and we took full advantage of that. There were some great attacking plays and our playmaking was on a high level as well. We totally busted them.

"The red card was a shame for [Jerome] Boateng. It's a little bitter for us. But besides that we enjoyed this and we're taking this good feeling onto the next match."

The Bavarians were in imperious form at the Etihad Stadium and provoked similarities to Barcelona due to Pep Guardiola's influence at die Roten, but Robben refuted such comparisons.

"People will compare us to Barcelona now, but we are Bayern Munich," he added. "We have good players and rely on our own strength. We are building on last season and adding some new things from the coach.

"Guardiola thinks and breathes football and always wants to talk about it. Even at my age I feel I can make more steps and learn from him.

"I have a good understanding with him. It doesn't matter if you're 16 or 29, the trust of the coach is very important."
