Iniesta: I want to retire with Barcelona

    315354_heroa.jpg

Andres Iniesta has expressed a desire to end his career at Barcelona in light of reports that will not extend his contract with the club.

Speculation has raged over the 29-year-old's future at Camp Nou after the Spain international allegedly snubbed the club's attempts to tie him to a new deal.

However, the World Cup winner - whose current deal expires in 2015 - has said that it would be a "dream" to see out the remainder of his playing days in the colours of the Blaugrana.

"The club and I want the same thing - that is to close a deal," he told RAC1.

"I’ve been at Barcelona since I was 12 and my dream is to end my career here. I feel that my best years are ahead of me and I want to spend them here at Barca. It is my objective to retire here."

Iniesta was given a standing ovation by the home supporters inside Parkhead upon being substituted in the 1-0 victory over Celtic on Tuesday, a reception has left a lasting impression on the midfielder.

He added: "The ovation I got from the Celtic fans when I was subbed off moved me."

Dnipro 1-2 Fiorentina: 10-man Viola move top of Group E

    324602hp2.jpg

Fiorentina ran out 2-1 winners away to Dnipro on Wednesday to go top of Europa League Group E - despite ending the game with 10-men.

The visitors took the lead through Gonzalo Rodriguez's penalty on 53 minutes but their lead only lasted a matter of minutes, with Yevhen Seleznyov equalising with a spot-kick for the hosts.

Falling snow marred much of the encounter but Massimo Ambrosini clinched victory for the Serie A side with 17 minutes remaining and even David Pizarro's late red card couldn't stop the Viola from claiming victory.

The result means Fiorentina lead their group on the back of Thursday's victory and answered Vincenzo Montella's pre-match cry for improvement from his side.

Dnipro created the first opportunity of note through Seleznyov but Norberto Neto pulled off a diving save low to his right.

The visitors soon responded. Matos Ryder got on the end of Marcos Alonso's pass inside the box but he failed to force goalkeeper Denys Boyko into a save.

Two goals shortly after the interval sparked the game into life as Rodriguez stepped up to put Fiorentina 1-0 in front after Matos Ryder was felled in the box, only for Seleznyov to reply from the spot moments later following Pizarro's handball.

Montella's side continued to push for the win, though, and were rewarded for their endeavours when Ambrosini nodded home a Borja Valero cross on 73 minutes to make it 2-1.

Pizarro was given his marching orders when he picked up a second booking late on but it mattered little with Fiorentina sealing the win and moving to Group E summit.

Wigan 3-1 Maribor: Powell double secures historic Latics win

    324580hp2.jpg

Wigan claimed their first win in Europe as they overcame Maribor 3-1 in the Europa League on Thursday.

Teenager Nick Powell scored in either half, including the club's first goal in European competition, sandwiching an effort from Ben Watson. Marcos Tavares had pulled one back for the Slovenians before the Manchester United loanee doubled his tally but the Latics fully deserved their victory.

The Championship outfit climbed to second in Group D with the three points, while their visitors remain pointless at the foot of the standings.

Manager Owen Coyle made three changes to the Wigan side that lost 1-0 to Watford on Saturday, with experienced duo Emmerson Boyce and Jean Beausejour coming in to the mix. The 47-year-old was unable to call on seasoned striker Marc-Antoine Fortune, though, after the 32-year-old limped off last weekend, with youngster Callum McManaman drafted in.

There was also a heavy focus on youth in new manager Ante Simundza's selection, with young duo Damjan Bohar and Martin Milec handed starts.

It was the home side who started brightest, with 19-year-old Powell going one-on-one with goalkeeper Jasmin Handanovic in the seventh minute only to see his attempted lob well saved by the Slovenian.

The visitors spurned a fine opportunity of their own 10 minutes later, as Goran Cvijanovic shot wide when well placed on the edge of the box, and he was made to rue his missed chance soon afterwards as Powell pounced on a poor clearance from Handanovic to sweep home the loose ball with 22 minutes gone.

The hosts doubled their lead 11 minutes before the interval when Beausejour's superb cross was headed in by midfielder Watson.

The start of the second half saw the visitors get more of a foothold in the game but they still left Scott Carson untested and it was Wigan who looked more likely to add to their tally.

Powell almost grabbed his second in the 54th minute but his effort from Beausejour's delivery struck the post and, just five minutes later, Maribor reduced the deficit after good work from Jean-Philippe Mendy was rewarded by Tavares's confident close-range finish.

Simundza made three late changes in an attempt to rally his side to an unlikely comeback but, after Carson had clawed away Tavares's powerful strike, Powell did net his second, darting past three players before coolly beating the keeper.

Swansea 1-0 St Gallen: Routledge & Tremmel keep Swans on track

    324592hp2.jpg

Swansea City went three points clear Group A with a 1-0 win against Swiss side St Gallen in the Europa League on Thursday.

The sides had gone in level at the break at the Liberty Stadium after Swans goalkeeper Gerhard Tremmel saved Goran Karanovic's penalty following a Dwight Tiendalli handball.

However, Wayne Routledge's close-range finish after 52 minutes was enough to give Michael Laudrup's men back-to-back wins in Europe.

Swansea made four changes from their opening win over Valencia, with captain Leon Britton and winger Routledge among those to make the starting XI. The Swiss were unchanged from their last Europa League outing, a 2-0 win over Kuban Krasnodar.

The first chance of the game fell to the home side, with Michu striking a powerful effort straight at Daniel Lopar after three minutes.

The visitors spurned a golden opportunity to move ahead when Karanovic missed a penalty after 15 minutes. Roberto Rodriguez's cross struck the arm of Tiendalli but the spot kick was easily saved by Tremmel after a staggered run-up.

Marco Mathys went close shortly after as the visitors gradually grew into the game, rolling an effort past the onrushing goalkeeper and marginally wide of the far post.

Swansea came close to taking the lead when Lopar pushed a Jordi Amat header onto the post after 23 minutes following a teasing delivery from Ben Davies - however, nobody was free to poke the loose ball home.

Mathys again tested Tremmell just after the half-hour mark, with the German fumbling his fierce long-range effort, before Wilfried Bony had the last chance of the half. After linking well with Michu, the Ivorian fired just wide of Lopar's left-hand post.

The home side eventually took the lead when Bony's effort from the right was parried away by Lopar into the path of Routledge. The winger latched on to the loose ball and poked in from close range to edge the home side in front seven minutes into the second half.

Substitute Alhassane Keita almost provided a swift reply after but he put the ball over the bar after expertly controlling a long ball from Lopar.

Nathan Dyer would have made it two but for a Lopar save 12 minutes from time before Stephane Nater struck Tremmel's left-hand post for the visitors.

However, the home side saw out the tie to move top of their group, with Laudrup's charges yet to concede a goal in Europe this season.

Anzhi Makhachkala 0-2 Tottenham: Defoe & Chadli strike in Spurs stroll

    324533hp2.jpg

Tottenham cemented their place at the top of Europa League Group K with a 2-0 win over Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala at Moscow's Saturn Stadium on Thursday evening.

Jermain Defoe opened the scoring, blasting the ball into the roof of the net to move to within one goal of Martin Chiver's European record for Spurs, before Nacer Chadli doubled the advantage six minutes later.

Despite facing more pressure in the second half than they had in the first, Tottenham's defence was rarely troubled, meaning the north London outfit are still yet to concede in their continental campaign and retain their 100 per cent record.

Villas-Boas continued with his policy of playing Defoe in the competition after he scored twice against Tromso last time out, while Zeki Fryers and Vlad Chiriches made their first European starts for the club.

Anzhi had gone three games without scoring a European goal prior to the clash and named forwards Pavel Solomatin and Serder Serderov alongside Islamnur Abdulavov up-front, with Lacina Traore dropping to the bench.

After what was a subdued opening 10 minutes, Defoe had the first half-chance, firing just wide of Evgeni Pomazan's right-hand post.

Despite continuing to enjoy plenty of possession, Spurs struggled to break down a resolute Anzhi defence, with their next sight at goal coming courtesy of Lewis Holtby just after the half-hour mark.

However, the visitors' patience was rewarded when Defoe hammered home after 34 minutes; Holtby slid the England international in with a neat pass and he made no mistake, putting Tottenham ahead with his fifth goal in this season’s competition.

Summer recruit Chadli then extended the lead five minutes before the break with his second goal in a Lilywhite shirt; the midfielder coolly slotted past Pomazan after good work from Kyle Walker to put Villas-Boas’ men firmly in charge.

The Belgium international curled narrowly wide from outside the area shortly after the restart as he went in search of a second goal, before Andrei Eschenko forced Hugo Lloris into a save with his cross-shot from the left-hand side.

The French goalkeeper was called into action twice more in quick succession, as he first parried away a Solomatin shot before punching away the resulting corner as the hosts showed their attacking capabilities for the first time in the match.

Solomatin again threatened late on, this time with a dipping drive, but Tottenham saw the game out with relative ease to record back-to-back victories in Group K.

    Neymar backs Martino rotation policy

    322643_heroa.jpg

Neymar has backed Barcelona's rotation policy under Gerardo Martino and is confident the approach will mean key players remain fit for the entire campaign.

The €54 million summer signing played from the start in the Blaugrana's 1-0 win over Celtic on Tuesday with Lionel Messi absent through injury, but has had to watch on from the substitutes' bench on more than one occasion this term.

Cesc Fabregas recently admitted he was finding it difficult to accustom to not playing every week, but Neymar has offered his backing to Martino's desire to utilise the entire squad at his disposal.

He told TV3: "The most important thing is the union within the squad, this makes us stronger and helps us to win games.

"It's a good system, everyone has the right to a rest so we don't pick up injuries. The most important thing is the team is in peak condition and because we have so many good players we can do this."

The 21-year-old has made eight appearances in all competitions since arriving from Santos and scored two goals.

Draxler: Keller must be having problems

    323736_heroa.jpg

Julian Draxler says he is happy to give Schalke coach Jens Keller more transfer headaches on the back of his match-winning display in the 1-0 win over Basel on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old midfielder was linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund over the summer but ended speculation regarding his future by signing a contract until 2018.

However, after scoring a stunning goal in Schalke's Champions League victory this week, the Gelsenkirchen club may have to contend with another wave of interest from across the continent in the January transfer window.

"The Champions League is a highlight for everyone and I'm happy that I've been able to perform well in the competition so far," Draxler told Bild.

"I try to give everything for Schalke...with everything else (transfer rumours) the manager must be having trouble."

Schalke general manager Horst Heldt was quizzed on the future of the club's star man but insisted there would be no battle to retain his services over the winter months.

He said: "I am glad that we have a player with such class - in the winter there is no theatre!"

Tottenham ready to bid £5m for Ince in January

    292692_heroa.jpg

Tottenham are preparing a £5 million January bid for Blackpool winger Tom Ince, Goal understands.

But Spurs face competition from a host of Premier League clubs, including Everton, Swansea City and Newcastle United, as well as strong interest in the player from Italian clubs who can buy him for a knock-down fee.

Tottenham came close to signing Ince, son of Blackpool manager and former England international Paul Ince, in the latter stages of the summer window but the player decided to stay put at Bloomfield Road

The north Londoners have retained their interest in the 21-year-old and are believed to be keen on making a fresh bid in January.

Ince can leave on a free at the end of the season when he is out of contract but, from February 1, he can sign for an overseas club for a small compensation fee. Were he to exploit this loophole Blackpool would only be entitled to the Fifa-mandated 'training' compensation for players aged under 23 of around £300,000.

Ince is believed to be keen to keep his options open, with his ex-professional father likely to have the biggest say in his final destination.

However, the youngster, who joined Blackpool from Liverpool, is keen to make his mark in the Premier League.

One possibility is that he could sign for a top-tier outfit and then be loaned back for the rest of the season.

Ince also came close to joining Cardiff City in the summer after the newly promoted club agreed an £8m fee with Blackpool but the player rejected the move to south Wales.

Liverpool are entitled to 50 per cent of Ince's fee as part of a clause in the deal that took him to Bloomfield Road in 2011.

Mertesacker helping Ozil to adapt to life in England

    320157_heroa.jpg

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker says he has done his utmost to help Mesut Ozil adjust to life in the Premier League, and believes the rewards are evident on the pitch.

The €50 million man has helped the Gunners claim top spot in the league since joining from Real Madrid in the summer and scored his first goal in Tuesday’s 2-0 Champions League win over Napoli.

Mertesacker is not surprised by his talented compatriot’s performances and admits the biggest challenge was ensuring he was well looked after away from the field.

"Mesut can play football, that is what his aim is to be here to do, so it is just the little details," the 29-year-old told Sky Sports.

"It is things like how to get on [in London], how to come to the training ground, to get to whatever he wants to go. It is just a quick call or a text, you can help him out.

"I need to [help Ozil settle], because it is very important to get him into the squad quickly, so that he can adapt and play with freedom.

"That is what he is - his vision is enormous and with him we are more dangerous and can compete at the higher levels.

"We try to make it comfortable for him to adapt as quickly as possible and it fits.

"Against Napoli, you felt that he could play 90 minutes on a high level, he can make the difference at any time in the game.

"We are delighted to have him here and to help him to get into the team. He has shown that he respects our game and that he does fit in.

"We can expect a lot [more] from him in the coming weeks, you could see that we needed his contribution and he is the right addition."

With Ozil also joining Lukas Podolski and Serge Gnabry in north London, Mertesacker admits he is enjoying the German spine to Arsene Wenger’s first team and believes his own form is benefitting.

"At first I was on my own here, with no Germans in the senior Arsenal squad, so it took me maybe one season to settle in completely," the former Werder Bremen man continued.

"I am delighted with my current form and my performances, but in football life changes so quickly, you have to be aware of every situation.

"We have a good and strong squad, if everybody is fit, the boss has a good selection.

"I think we now have a squad to compete at the high level and that is what we need to do in the coming weeks."
