Madrid don’t miss Ozil - Ancelotti

    323982_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti insists Mesut Ozil is not missed by Real Madrid, despite the player impressing immensely at Arsenal since his transfer.

Since leaving the Santiago Bernabeu on deadline day this summer, the Germany international has helped Arsenal reach the top of the Premier League and Champions League Group F - scoring once and adding five assists in five appearances.

Madrid, on the other hand, have struggled this season to keep pace with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, but Ancelotti is not concerned with his side's attacking output without the German playmaker at the Blancos.

"I don’t regret Ozil leaving," the 54-year-old told reporters. "I wish him luck but we don’t need him as we’re doing fine in attack without him.

"We’re scoring a lot of goals, but we need to find balance as we are conceding too many. We need to get the team to gel."

The team will also receive a boost when Gareth Bale returns from injury following the international break, although the Italian reiterated the €100 million man is unsettled by his lack of fitness at the moment.

Ancelotti added: "He’ll stay here [in Madrid] to train for 15 days and he will be ready for our next game [against Malaga on October 19].

"He’s not too happy as he was excited about being able to play. He’s been through a difficult time, but psychologically he is fine.

"He is a relaxed guy and his fitness problems are not serious."

Real Madrid will travel to Levante on Saturday, where they have won just once in their previous four visits, and Jose Mourinho's successor knows that a top performance could be needed from his players to come away with a triumph.

"They are a difficult team to face, particularly at home," Ancelotti continued. "Madrid struggled there last season. We have to be focused and put in an intense game.

"Against Levante, a few players who didn’t start against Copenhagen will get to play. It’s possible that Alvaro Morata will be in the line-up."

Don't expect a marquee signing in January, warns Moyes

    320158_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager David Moyes has warned that the club are unlikely to make a high-profile signing in the January transfer window.

The Scot bolstered his options in the summer with the acquisition of Uruguayan right-back Guillermo Varela, who is yet to make a first-team appearance, and Marouane Fellaini, who arrived at Old Trafford from Everton in a £27.5 million deal.

United have suffered an inconsistent start to their Premier League campaign and sit 12th in the table after securing seven points from six games and Moyes admits that he may not have another opportunity to strengthen his side this season.

"I'll look at January but I wouldn't want people to have big expectations about what you would sign or do in January because I don't think January has, in the main, been a really good month to sign, really, at the top," the Scot told reporters.

"If you're in trouble near the bottom of the league you might if you're desperate for something but I think, where we'll be with Manchester United, we'll be looking for the top.

"I've got really, really top-end players, great players to work with but undoubtedly we will in time try to make that better, that's the part of the job. The job is to progress, to make progress at Man United. We'll look to add to the squad if the right players become available."

'Special' Januzaj has Rooney quality, says Moyes

David Moyes labelled Manchester United’s match-winner Adnan Januzaj a "special talent" after his double against Sunderland on Saturday - and compared the youngster's debut to that of Wayne Rooney. The 18-year-old struck twice in six second-half minutes to secure a vital win for the Red Devils and cap his first Premier League start with a 2-1 victory.

He followed in the footsteps of Ruud van Nistelrooy by scoring twice on his league debut and Moyes was full of praise for Januzaj's performance."I remember giving Wayne [Rooney] his debut, and Ross Barkley, and Adnan is certainly that quality. He is a top, top player," Moyes told Sky Sports.

"I would've played him two or three weeks ago, but for different reasons it didn't quite work. I thought today was the right time, he's been so good it was hard to stop him.

"He's going to be a great talent: he's a special talent; he's got goals; he's got ability on the ball. But we'll keep his feet on the ground and make sure he gets on with it.
"We won't let him get ahead of himself and we'll keep trying to do the right things with him."

United made the worst possible start to the game as Craig Gardner capitalised on some sloppy defending to give the hosts the lead, but Moyes insisted he was happy with the overall display from his side.

"I thought it was just a good performance, even a 1-0 down I thought we played really well," he added.

"We made a real hash of the first goal we gave away but apart from that I thought we played some really good stuff.

"I'll not be getting too excited because I've won, just as when I was losing I wasn't getting too low either, a lot of people were but I wasn't."I know the quality in the players I've got in the dressing room."

United's win moves them back into the top half of the Premier League table, with 10 points from their opening seven matches.

FA wants Januzaj to play for England, says Moyes

    325268_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager David Moyes has revealed that the Football Association has approached Adnan Januzaj about playing for England.

The teenager made his full debut for the champions on Saturday, scoring twice to inspire Moyes’ men to victory at the Stadium of Light against Sunderland.

Januzaj was born in Belgium but is also eligible to play for Albania and Turkey and Moyes revealed that the FA is keen for Januzaj to represent England.

When asked if there had been contact he told reporters: "Yes. There is some way he has a chance of qualifying for England through residency.

"I think he's got a choice of countries to play for. He's got probably three or four different countries he could choose to play for.

"Obviously, he has been called up by Belgium several times and chosen not to at the moment, and he's wanted by, I think, Albania, Croatia and a few others as well.

"He can play for several countries - and England as well. I don't know how that is. I think it's something to do with his residency. That's something to do with it.''

Januzaj’s current Manchester United deal expires at the end of the season but Moyes is hopeful the youngster will opt to commit his future to the Red Devils.

"I think all young boys want to play for Manchester United," he added.

"I don't know a better place to do their work and have the coaching at a club that promotes young players.

"If I was the dad of a young player who had the chance to go to Manchester United I would think 'he could get in the first team because that's a club that promotes young players.'

"And hopefully he would see a manager that promotes young players because that's part of my remit."

West Brom 1-1 Arsenal: Wilshere ends drought to take Gunners back top

    325637hp2.jpg

Arsenal came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against West Brom courtesty of Jack Wilshere's first Premier League goal in three years.

Claudio Yacob headed the home side in front shortly before half-time, only for the England international to equalise in the 63rd minute to earn his side a point.

The result brought an end to Arsenal's run of eight consecutive away league victories but it was still enough to see Arsene Wenger's men leapfrog Liverpool to go back to the summit on goals scored.

West Brom boss Steve Clarke was forced into two changes from the team that started last week’s victory at Manchester United, with Saido Berahino and Nicolas Anelka replacing the injured duo of Victor Anichebe and Scott Sinclair.

Wenger also made two alterations from the midweek Champions League victory over Napoli, Carl Jenkinson coming in for the injured Bacary Sagna at right-back while Wilshere was preferred to Tomas Rosicky in midfield.

After a quiet start, the hosts were denied an opener in the 15th minute as Wojciech Szczesny dived to his right to keep out Berahino's effort.

The visitors responded strongly, Mesut Ozil picking out Kieran Gibbs on the left-hand side of the area, but the full-back blazed his effort over.

Clear sights of goal were proving rare with Myhill not tested properly until the 40th minute, getting down to his right to deny Aaron Ramsey.

But despite the visitors being on top, Yacob put West Brom in front three minutes before half-time, heading home Morgan Amalfitano's glorious right-wing cross from six yards.

It should have been 2-0 a minute into the second half, Anelka getting his feet in a muddle after being picked out six yards from goal following superb work down the left from Berahino.

And in a frantic opening to the half, Arsenal responded immediately, with Wilshere firing high and wide after being played in by Olivier Giroud.

Anelka wasted another golden opportunity to double the lead in the 52nd minute after springing the offside trap from Liam Ridgewell's pass, but with just Szczesny to beat the ex-Arsenal man placed his effort wide of the right-hand post.

West Brom were punished for their wastefulness in the 63rd minute as Arsenal equalised with a goal of real quality.

Giroud fed substitute Rosicky, whose lay-off was met first time by Wilshere 20 yards out, and his sweet strike took a slight deflection of Jonas Olsson's shin, with the ball deviating just enough to beat Myhill low to his left.

Giroud then volleyed wide when well placed in the 72nd minute before Billy Jones stung the palms of Szczesny with a rasping drive a minute later.

Myhill did brilliantly to deny Giroud in the 75th minute when it looked as though the Frenchman had rounded the goalkeeper and would tuck the ball home.

West Brom had late appeals for a penalty turned down when Laurent Koscielny bumped into Shane Long in the area, but the referee was not interested.

Napoli 4-0 Livorno: Partenopei pepper Amaranto to close Roma gap

    325562hp2.jpg

Napoli swept aside Livorno in a 4-0 rout on Sunday to reduce the gap behind top-of-the-table Roma to two points.

The Tuscany-based visitors were no match for Rafa Benitez's men and goals from Goran Pandev, Gokhan Inler, Jose Callejon and Marek Hamsik ensured all three points went the Partenopei's way.

The victory, which came on the back of defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League in midweek, leaves Napoli on 19 points in Serie A and a vastly superior goal difference to Juventus means that the Bianconeri this gameweek.

The likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Christian Maggio and Raul Albiol were unavailable for selection due to injury, but that did not stop the hosts getting off to an ideal start as Pandev punished the Amaranto on the counterattack by lashing in past Francesco Bardi within four minutes.

At the other end, Pasquale Schiattarella and Innocent Emeghara came close to pulling the game level before Pandev nearly doubled the lead - and his tally - but could not keep his effort beneath the crossbar.

On 26 minutes, however, Benitez's men were able to extend the difference to 2-0 and Livorno goalkeeper Bardi was arguably to blame, as he was unable to parry Inler's long-range effort over the woodwork.

Emeghara again went close as Livorno attempted to fashion a fightback, his volley thundering off the crossbar with Pepe Reina beaten and half-time imminent.

Usual service resumed after the break as ex-Real Madrid attacker Callejon, one of Napoli's many summer signings, added a third for the hosts, defeating Bardi with a low, deflected shot on 54 minutes.

Victory for the Naples side was an inevitability as the game wound to a close, though a brilliant save from Bardi kept Dries Merten's off the scoresheet as his fine free kick looked destined to find the back of the net.

But Napoli finally grabbed their fourth and final goal with seven minutes left on the clock, as Lorenzo Insigne saw his shot saved before playmaker Hamsik thumped in the rebound to score his fifth goal of the Serie A campaign.

Norwich 1-3 Chelsea: Willian screamer seals victory

    325583hp2.jpg

Late strikes from Eden Hazard and Willian fired Chelsea to a 3-1 victory over Norwich City at Carrow Road on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho's side, who have now secured their first away win in the Premier League this season, looked to be heading for a draw after Anthony Pilkington had cancelled out Oscar's fourth-minute opener.

But Hazard's goal, which was aided by poor handling from John Ruddy in the 85th minute, was added to 60 seconds later by Willian, whose first-time curled effort from the edge of the area wrapped up the three points for Chelsea.

With Fernando Torres suspended, Demba Ba was handed only his second start of the season and the 28-year-old had an early penalty claim turned down after colliding with Sebastien Bassong inside Norwich's area.

Ba continued to threaten the hosts' defence and he was able to assist his side's opening goal as he controlled a long ball before laying off to Oscar, who drilled his effort low past Ruddy.

Ba almost instantly doubled that lead, forcing an excellent save from Ruddy with a side-footed shot from a tight angle. Norwich carved out a presentable chance of their own in reply, with Petr Cech keeping out Jonny Howson's attempt from close range.

Norwich also had promising chance before the end of the first half, but Howson could not engineer a shooting opportunity after Ricky van Wolfswinkel headed the ball on into a dangerous area.

Chelsea had been largely comfortable since taking their early lead, but they were given a scare just a few moments after the restart following an incident that set the tone for the second period.

Ramires' challenge on the breaking Pilkington had the home fans appealing for a penalty but, yet again, referee Neil Swarbrick waved away the protests.

Van Wolfswinkel then went close to getting himself on the scoresheet but he could only chest a bouncing ball wide with Cech out of position. However, Norwich did get the goal their endeavour deserved after 68 minutes.

Martin Olsson's cross from the left found the head of Van Wolfswinkel, and Pilkington succeeded where his Dutch team-mate had previously failed by getting ahead of David Luiz and guiding the ball into the back of the net.

Both managers made attacking substitutions in a bid to claim the win late on, but it was two of Chelsea's new additions who provided the decisive contribution.

When Alexander Tettey's failed attempted clearance from Oscar's pass fell into Hazard's path, the Belgian still had plenty to do - and his shot looked destined for the safety of Ruddy's arms. However, the Norwich goalkeeper allowed the ball to squirm under his body and trickle into the net.

Willian then scored his first Premier League goal since his move to Chelseaa minute later as his first-time effort from the edge of the area curled over Ruddy who could not get close to the strike.

The win fires Chelsea to third in the table, two points behind leaders Liverpool, while Norwich remain on seven points, two above the relegation zone.

Southampton 2-0 Swansea City: Lallana & Rodriguez maintain super Saints start

    325535hp2.jpg

Southampton moved into the top five of the Premier League thanks to a battling 2-0 win over Swanseaat St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday.

The hosts impressed in the opening 25 minutes and took a deserved lead through Adam Lallana, but Swansea gradually came back into the contest and were unlucky not to equalise before the break as Nathan Dyer hit the post.

Swansea dominated the second half, but for all their possession they struggled to create chances as the home side added a second in the 83rd minute thanks to substitute Jay Rodriguez.

Mauricio Pochettino made only the one change from their win over Crystal Palace as Danny Fox comes in for Luke Shaw, who missed out through illness.

Swansea were in Europa League action on Thursday and Michael Laudrup unsurprisingly rotated his squad by making five changes.Michel Vorm, Angel Rangel, Dyer, Jonjo Shelvey and Jose Canas returned to the starting XI, with Jonathan De Guzman and Leon Britton among those who missed out.

The visitors started the match brightly as Dyer looked to attack down the right, but Pablo Daniel Osvaldo was presented with the first chance as he held off Chico Flores before shooting over from a tight angle.

Southampton began to take control and break the deadlock 19 minutes in. Steven Davis played a controlled half-volley into the area for Lallana and the wide man burst away from Ben Davies before slotting past Vorm.Swansea had three good chances to equalise in quick succession as Artur Boruc palmed away Michu’s header and a deflected Shelvey effort.

Their best chance came 10 minutes before half-time, however, as Dyer cut on to his left foot and fired a powerful effort on to the post.

The visitors continued to threaten after the break, but still they failed to find the net as Southampton academy graduate Dyer sliced a shot wide inside the area, while Wilfried Bony nodded Rangel’s cross over Boruc’s goal.As the match progressed towards the hour mark, Swansea were the only side that looked like scoring, but they were finding it increasingly difficult to break through their hosts’ defence.

Despite Swansea’s superiority, Southampton were the next side to have the ball in the net as Victor Wanyama knocked in a corner, but referee Mike Dean disallowed it, seemingly for a marginal push elsewhere in the area, much to the hosts’ fury.

However, that soon dissipated as they doubled their lead in the 83rd minute.Chico failed to deal with a long ball from defence and substitute Rodriguez bullied him off the ball before stroking a shot into the bottom corner, and they held on for a fourth straight Premier League clean sheet to cement a fine start to the campaign.

Atletico Madrid 2-1 Celta Vigo: Eight out of eight for Rojiblancos

    325506hp2.jpg

Two goals from Diego Costa saw Atletico Madrid record a 2-1 win over Celta Vigo and rack up their eighth win from their opening eight league games.

Diego Simeone's side dominated the opening 45 minutes and the visitors had goalkeeper Yoel Rodriguez to thank for saving a Costa penalty on 25 minutes and pulling off a number of other saves to keep the home side at bay early on.

However, Atleti's dominance continued and on 42 minutes they took the lead when Costa bundled home from close range to put them 1-0 in front at the half-time interval.

The striker then doubled his and los Rojiblancos' lead in the just past the hour mark with a well taken finish and though Nolito pulled a goal back for Celta with 20 minutes remaining, the hosts held on to pick up a deserved victory.

The win sees Atleti draw level with Barcelona - who beat Valladolid 4-1 on Saturday - at the top of La Liga, with both sides continuing their 100% starts to the season.

The Copa del Rey holders are next in league action when they take on Espanyol on October 19 following the international break.
