Ramsey and Wenger win Player and Manager of the Month

326319_heroa.jpg

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has won the Barclays Premier League Player of the Month award for September, with boss Arsene Wenger picking up the manager's prize.

Ramsey scored four goals in as many league matches for the Gunners last month, including a double away to Sunderland and strikes against Stoke and Swansea.

Wenger, meanwhile, led his side to the top of the table with four consecutive wins in the top flight, including a 1-0 triumph over bitter north London rivals Tottenham.

Next up for Arsenal and Ramsey is a home clash against Norwich on Saturday October 19, following the international break.

    Gundogan injury blow for Dortmund

    316047_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund have been rocked by the news that Ilkay Gundogan could remain out of action until the end of the year.

The midfielder has been sidelined since aggravating a back injury during Germany's friendly with Paraguay in August but had been expected to return to action last month.

However, Dortmund's medical team have confirmed that the 22-year-old is still suffering from an inflamed nerve and the club's sporting director, Michael Zorc, has admitted that they have no idea when Gundogan will be available for selection again.

"He is not making any progress at the moment," the Schwarzgelben legend is quoted as saying by Zeitung. "We do not know when he will be able to play again."

Gundogan, who has been capped eight times by Germany, has made just one appearance for Dortmund so far this season.

    Nightmare period for BVB...
    Red card for Hummels
    Bann for Klopp
    Stunned by B.Monchenglandbach

Valdes: My time at Barcelona is over

    307322_heroa.jpg

Victor Valdes has reiterated his internation to leave Barcelona next summer, explaining that he feels that his time at Camp Nou is over.

The Spain international is out of contract at the end of the season and announced during the summer that he would not be signing an extension.

A number of Barca players, including midfielder Andres Iniesta, have publicly stated that they have tried to persuade Valdes to change his mind and stay in Catalunya, but the 31-year-old shot-stopper says he has his heart set on a move abroad.

"My time here is done," the goalkeeper told Antena3. "They offered me the chance to renew [my contract] but my decision had been made."

"I am seeking new challenges. I want to play in another league and be with my family in another place.

"But this season I have still been feeling the love and support of the people and that is greatly appreciated."

Valdes, a product of Barcelona's youth academy, has spent his entire professional career to date at Camp Nou.

    Time for Cortouis :D

'I deserved to play up front' - Rooney reignites Fergie feud

    318285_heroa.jpg

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has revealed his frustration at being asked to play out of position by Sir Alex Ferguson last season, and once again refused to commit his future to the club.

Rooney was desperate to leave Old Trafford this summer only to be thwarted by the club's refusal to sell him to a Premier League rival, with Arsenal and Chelsea the two clubs to show firm interest.

The England striker has started the season in fine form, scoring five goals in eight games, but although he says he has felt "happy" and "settled" for months he also told of his irritation at not being played up front alongside Robin van Persie.

"Everyone at the club knew where I wanted to play and I think that's why I was disappointed," he told reporters. "I got told to play in midfield and I didn't want to. I just think there had to come a point when, for my own career, I had to be a bit selfish really.

"I actually felt when I played in midfield I did okay, but I didn't want to play there. I've had no problem in the past playing out of position, but I felt I deserved the right to play in my position and that wasn't happening.

"I think, naturally, I was a bit disappointed and maybe that affected some of the games I played. I know myself that last year wasn't my best season but there were times when I was playing in different positions."I didn't feel I got a consistent run of games up front. Sometimes when you're not playing in one position all the time it's difficult to adapt."

Yet despite talking publicly about some of the reasons for his unhappiness at United over the last few months, the 27-year-old also claimed that he never, in fact, had any problems during the transfer window."To be honest, I've been settled all summer," he added. "I really have been happy all summer. From the outside looking in, it might not have seemed like it, but I have been settled.

"My wife had a new child and I'm just delighted to be back playing and injury-free. I've got my head down and worked hard. I've been focused and I've been wanting to prove to people that I am a top player. That's what I've really tried to do."
Manchester United rejected two bids for Rooney from Chelsea during pre-season, before Jose Mourinho urged the striker to make his intentions known during the final week of the transfer window.

Rooney decided to remain silent, publicly at least, as he quickly realised that the Red Devils were not interested in a sale: "I'm sure the club made that clear," he said. "Obviously there's been a lot of stuff happening and everyone has been waiting for me to say something, but I've spoken to the people who matter at the club and we've known ourselves what was going on.

"I didn't want to come out saying anything. I just wanted to concentrate on my football. That's what I've done and that's what I'll continue to do. I'm not going to go around saying: 'I wanted to stay' or 'I wanted to leave'. I'll concentrate on my football and see what happens after that."

It is not the first time Rooney, whose contract expires at the end of next season, has used that line to divert awkward questions about his current situation. When asked by ITV if he would be signing a new contract at Old Trafford following a Champions League match in September, the striker flatly stated that he is concentrating on his football. He employed a similar tactic again in Wednesday's press conference."You can see I'm playing and I'm happy in my football. I'll have more discussions with the club and we'll see what happens from there."

Reports at the beginning of the season suggested that Van Persie was unhappy with the playing tactics and high-intensity training implemened by Ferguson's replacement, David Moyes, but Rooney, for one, says he is enjoying life under his former Everton mentor, including the extra workload.

"It's a bit different in terms of David Moyes and his staff coming in," he continued. "The training is different, there's a different style, a different way of thinking about how he wants us to play."Honestly, the training has been so hard. We've done a lot more running. Long running, quicker running, sharper running.

"I feel that's really benefited me. I feel as fit as I ever have done. I had a couple of injuries pre-season but I feel great and in good shape. It's a mixture of things, but I am happy and I am enjoying my football."

'Immortal' Totti can land World Cup spot, claims Buffon

    326728_heroa.jpg

Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has championed the idea of coach Cesare Prandelli selecting the "immortal" Francesco Totti for duty in the World Cup next summer.

The 37-year-old has been touted for a potential return to the international scene after inspiring Roma to their best start to a Serie A campaign, with the Giallorossi sitting top of the standings having collected maximum points from their opening seven fixtures.

On Monday Prandelli confirmed he would consider selecting the legendary Italian should he sustain his performances throughout the season, and Buffon believes that his compatriot's age-defying ability puts him in the frame for selection ahead of the trip to Brazil in June.

"As I've already said, Totti can be considered a sort of immortal player under certain points of view," the 35-year-old told a press conference.

"His current physical and mental conditions along with his technique and natural skills make him a player able to make the difference in any occasion and at every age.

"Thanks to his performance, Totti is proving once again that he has always been - and he still is - a champion, therefore it's normal that everyone talks about him in such a positive way.

"We also have to say that it's October and the World Cup is close, but it won't take place before eight or nine months.

"If he is still in the same condition, then, no one would have any doubt."

Totti's last appearance for the national team was in 2006, where he helped the Azzurri to victory over France in the final of the World Cup.

Italy, who have already qualified for Brazil 2014, face Denmark on Friday, before hosting Armenia four days later in their final two fixtures in Group B.

    Fabio considers Manchester United exit

    115436_heroa.jpg

Fabio has given his clearest indication yet that he will leave Manchester United in search of regular football.

The 23-year-old Brazilian defender has seen his twin brother Rafael make the right-back position his own at Old Trafford, but has fallen behind Patrice Evra and Alexander Buttner in the pecking order at left-back.

And Fabio admits a potential return to Fluminense, the club he and his brother left to join Manchester United five years ago, could be on the cards.

"I don't know. I think the time has come and maybe in the next window or even next season, I think I might leave. There are good possibilities."

"I'm looking for other clubs. There's nothing certain, we'll leave it for later.

"I want to be happy. I want to play, I want to be close to my family. I may go back to Brazil, or maybe not, I'm checking with my manager to see what is the best for me.

"The affection I have for Fluminense is very big, for sure. I played there for seven years, and certainly if I have to go back to Fluminense I'm going with great pride because I have a special affection for them."

Di Maria: Argentina will fight to the end

    305817_heroa.jpg

Angel Di Maria has said that Argentina will "fight until the end" in an effort to finish top of the Conmebol standings.

The Albiceleste became the first South American country - apart from the host nation - to qualify for the tournament in Brazil next June following a 5-2 victory over Paraguay in September.

Despite already cementing their passage to next summer's showpiece, though, the Real Madrid attacker insists the team will perform as if their tournament lives depended on it in the country's remaining fixtures with Peru and Uruguay respectively.

"The last time around, in the World Cup qualifiers, nothing was handed to us," the 25-year-old told reporters.

"We had to fight until the end and we're going to do the same to try to get six points and finish top of the group.

"Before the match against Paraguay we talked about wanting to depend only on ourselves, feel the responsibility of winning and being at the World Cup.

"We did it and it was a good feeling for all of us."

:love:De Gea key to Manchester United title win - Van der Sar

    325254_heroa.jpg

Edwin van der Sar has praised current Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, suggesting he was a key component in last season's title-winning side.

De Gea has produced several impressive performances this season, and pulled off a magnificent save to deny Emanuele Giaccherini against Sunderland last weekend with the Black Cats 1-0 up.

And Van Der Sar insists he has been impressed with his successor's progress since joining the club as the world's second most expensive goalkeeper at just 20 years of age.

"It is unbelievable," the ex-goalkeeper, now marketing director at Ajax, told reporters at the Leaders in Football Conference. "He came from different league, he was young. He was 20 when he came.

"He came from Spain, he didn't speak the language. There is different food, different tactics, different methods of training.

"Corners and free-kicks, balls in the box - that is different to the Spanish league. It was normal he could have some troubles in the beginning.

"I think the way he turned the corner from January onwards has been a real benefit for United and one of the two or three reasons they won the league.

"His physique is better. He worked really well with [former goalkeeping coach] Eric Steele and the physical coaches and that is the way you improve.

"He is still so young but already experienced. Hopefully he will get a chance in the national team also."

Song: I could return to Arsenal

    201859_heroa.jpg

Barcelona midfielder Alex Song has fuelled speculation over his future after failing to rule out a move to former club Arsenal.

The Cameroon international has struggled to earn a regular starting berth with the Catalans since leaving the Premier League outfit for a fee in the region of €17 million last summer.

And Song, who enjoyed a six-year spell with the Gunners, admits a return to the Emirates Stadium could be on the horizon.

He told RMC: "I do not know what will happen in the future, but it is true that I spent some fantastic seasons there [at Arsenal].

"We will see what happens, but for now I'm a Barcelona player."

The 26-year-old reportedly had an €80 million release clause written into his initial deal at Camp Nou, which expires in 2017.

Song started 17 times under Tito Vilanova in the league last season as the Blaugrana successfully wrestled the Liga title back from rivals Real Madrid.

Arsenal will continue to improve, insists Ozil

    323895_heroa.jpg

Mesut Ozil has backed Arsenal to continue improving as they look to win their first trophy in nine years.

The midfielder smashed the Gunners transfer record when he completed a €47 million move from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day, and has pitched in with one goal and four assists to help the Gunners climb to top spot in the Premier League.

Arsenal's last piece of silverware came in the form of the 2005 FA Cup, but after winning 10 and drawing one of their past 11 games in all competitions, Ozil feels the only way is up for his new side.

"I am delighted we top the table," he told reporters. "But we also know that the season is still very long. To talk about winning the league would be too early. The current table is nothing more than a snapshot.

"We will continue to play every game with our full concentration, we will try to get better as a team. If we can do that, we have a great chance to achieve a lot. I will give it my all.

"For me the Premier League is the strongest league in the world. Every match is a challenge and the games are very intense.

"I believe, I can profit from that. The atmosphere in the stadium is also striking, the support of the fans, also of the away fans, is impressive."

Ozil's former coach at Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho, previously called the midfielder the "best No.10 in the world", and while the German appreciates such remarks he says it has no affect on his performances.

"Such compliments flatter me," he told reporters. "I'm grateful for that.

"I do not need them though since I do not draw confidence from the statements of others. I know what I can do. And everyone who works or worked with me knows too."

Ozil also thanked the German contingent of Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski, and Serge Gnabry at the Emirates Stadium, with their presence having aided his adaption to life in England.

"The guys are all great, they help me and support me really well," he continued. "For many reasons, this is a huge help for me. I have to admit that my English falls short, I definitely have to work on it.

"It's hard to 100 per cent judge the strength and abilities of the team-mates and the opposing players. [The squad] are looking for me on the pitch, they trust me, feed me with balls and respond to my ideas."

Klose: I want to play until 2016

    316341_heroa.jpg

Germany veteran Miroslav Klose says he intends to play until 2016, but will reassess his position after the 2014 World Cup.

The Lazio striker is Germany's joint-leading goalscorer of all-time alongside Gerd Muller, with 68 international goals to his name, but has no interest in hanging up his boots for club or country just yet.

"I feel great at the moment, and I want to play for a few more years still," the 35-year-old told Corriere dello Sport.

"However, this is a decision that I will judge month by month and not rush over. Let's see how this season goes. My contract runs until June next year, then there is the World Cup, then I will make a decision.

"My desire is to win the World Cup, which will be my last major tournament for Germany. I have come close to winning before but have fallen just short.

"There would be nothing more beautiful than lifting the trophy next summer."

In terms of the national side, Klose admits that the current crop of players are far better than when he first got into the side, and feels die Mannschaft have a great chance of winning a fourth World Cup next year.

"When you look at the quality of the team when I began compared to now it's fair to say we have taken a giant step forward," he continued.

"The way they are organised, they way they train and their natural ability are all superior compared to 10 years ago.

"This current group of players are so young, like Mesut Ozil, Mario Gotze, Marco Reus and Thomas Muller, and they give a freshness to the squad.

"They will win major tournaments in years to come."

Since making his Germany debut in 2001, the former Bayern Munich striker has scored 68 goals in 130 appearances for his country, and he admits his achievements still haven't completely sunk in yet.

"I would never have imagined I would achieve this. It was unthinkable when I was younger. I would like to thank all of my team-mates over the years for helping me get to where I am."

Wilshere: I wish Januzaj was English

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has clarified comments he gave to the media regarding the Football Association's attempt to convince Manchester United winger Adnan Janusaj to play for England.

David Moyes revealed on Sunday that the FA were keeping tabs on Januzaj - who is eligible to play for Belgium, Albania, Serbia and potentially Kosovo if they are granted Fifa affiliation - as he has yet to settle on which nation he wants to represent at international level.

Asked his view on the matter, Wilshere suggested Januzaj should not be allowed to choose to play for England because he is "not English", comments that were distorted in the British media on Wednesday morning.

Wilshere stated on his Twitter account: "Just to clarify a few things....again! Seems to be a trend in this country, poor journalism in my eyes! I wasn't referring to Janujaz...

"The question was should foreign players be allowed to play for England, and in my opinion I don't think they should! He is a great player...

"I wish he was English! I'm sure most of you agree with me even if some journalist are trying to make me look bad....again!"

    Diego Costa accepts Spain controversy

    325506_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa says he would have no problem scoring for Spain against Brazil in a World Cup final.

The 25-year-old was granted Spanish citizenship in July and has expressed his desire to play for la Roja ahead of his country of birth should Fifa grant him permission.

"I do not want to create problems with anyone in Brazil," Costa told Marca.

"I want people to accept my decision. Would I have a problem scoring for Spain against Brazil in the World Cup Final? No."

On the topic of a potential call-up for la Roja, Costa says he is far from promised a place in the squad, despite his excellent form for Atletico so far this season.

"Vicente del Bosque has promised me nothing," he continued.

"I know I will have to work very hard to earn a call-up, and hopefully my current form will ensure that.

Finally, the controversial striker admits he doesn't always behave, but puts it down to a tough upbringing in Brazil.

"I have come from having nothing to having everything I want," he said.

"I know what I do on the pitch isn't always right, but I am also provoked more than a lot of players. I came to Spain at a young age, with no friends or family and in a very different culture. It has not been easy."

Costa has scored 10 goals in just eight league games for Diego Simeone's side so far this season.

Xavi: Lahm can be a top midfielder

    295433_heroa.jpg

Barcelona star Xavi says Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm can become a "top midfield player" following his positional switch.

The 29-year-old made his name as a full-back but has flourished in a central role since filling in for the injured Javi Martinez at the Allianz Arena, and Xavi believes it has made him an even more formidable opponent.

"Lahm is a top player with a lot of personality, who can play anywhere on the pitch," the Spain midfielder told Sport Bild.

"He seems to be getting even better. He has what it takes to be a top midfield player."

Bayern coach Pep Guardiola added a glowing endorsement of Lahm's transition and firmly believes the Germany international is the right man at the base of his midfield.

"The way Lahm has been playing in recent games, I think it is impossible that anybody could have played any better there," he said.

"In the 1-1 draw with Leverkusen last weekend he completely dominated the midfield. He had 115 touches."

Finally, Lahm himself admitted he is relishing his new role, having played the large majority of his career in defence.

"I love it in the middle, it is a lot of fun."

Di Maria: Ancelotti believes in me

    324171_heroa.jpg

Angel Di Maria has voiced his satisfaction with life at Real Madrid and is pleased with head coach Carlo Ancelotti's faith in him.

The Argentina international's future at the club was seemingly in doubt following the arrival of Gareth Bale from Tottenham this summer, but Di Maria has impressed with a string of fine performances in the opening months of the 2013-14 campaign.

"Things are going really well for me at Madrid," Di Maria was quoted as saying by AS.

"I have Ancelotti's trust and I had a great pre-season. I am feeling very well at Madrid.

"Thing can always change, but everything's going fine at the moment."

Di Maria, 25, has made 10 appearances in all competitions so far, scoring two goals, while setting up five more.

    Klopp won't appeal Uefa ban

    318924_heroa.jpg

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he won't seek to overturn the touchline ban imposed upon him by Uefa.

The Borussia Dortmund coach was facing a one-game suspension in relation to his sending off during his side's Champions League defeat by Napoli last month, but a day after that fixture at the San Paolo, the punishment was doubled, meaning he will also have to watch his side's meeting with Arsenal on 22 October from the stands.

However, despite the increase in the length of his sentence, Klopp says he will not challenge the ruling.

"I stand by my responsibility and I accept the decision with a heavy heart," the 46-year-old trainer told reporters.

"My main motivation is that I do not want to give the impression to trivialise my own misconduct or want to detract from it."

Dortmund assistant coach Zeljko Buvac oversaw Dortmund's recent win over Olympique de Marseille and Klopp insists he has faith that his Bosnian sidekick can also successfully negotiate the Arsenal clash.

"I have every confidence in Zeljko and his work. He is the best coach I have ever met in my life."
