Wenger can win Premier League, says Bergkamp

    251248_heroa.jpg

Former Arsenal striker Dennis Bergkamp believes Arsene Wenger can end the club’s eight-year wait for silverware by claiming the Premier League title.

The 44-year-old has seen the Gunners struggle to match the trophy haul attained during his own spell in north London as part of the famous ‘invincibles’ side that claimed the league and FA Cup double.

But with Arsenal currently sitting top of the table, Bergkamp feels they are in a strong position to continue their form and secure their first league title since he last won it back in 2003-04.

"It’s still early days, of course, but they’re going into November, where and Arsenal are known for having problems," he told talkSPORT radio.

"If they are still up at the top of the league in January or February I think they’ve got a good chance [of winning the Premier League]."

Goal exclusively revealed Wenger is set to sign a new contract but his time at the helm has not gone without criticism, with sections of fans pointing the blame for their drought at their long-standing manager.

Yet the current Ajax coach feels the criticism was unjust and now believes he has silenced any doubters with their strong start to the season and summer transfer business that included the acquisition of Mesut Ozil.

"I was really surprised by the stick Wenger got this summer," he continued. "Looking back over the last six or seven years where there weren’t any trophies it was disappointing, but can you blame just him?

"I don’t think so. He’s a manager and, how I know him, he’s a manager who wants to win trophies. He wants to be successful. He’s not doing it on purpose.

"He’s silenced the critics a little bit, although you never know what will happen in the season. For now they’re doing really well. They bought a terrific player in Mesut Ozil. It’s going well at the minute."

    Pique: Ronaldo is a machine

    251020_heroa.jpg

Gerard Pique says he admires the work ethic and ambition of Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Barcelona defender believes the Portugal international's drive and determination is why he is considered one of the best players in the world.

Ahead of their Clasico encounter next Saturday, Pique admits it is hard not to like Ronaldo for his hard work and endeavour.

He is quoted by Marca as saying: “[Cristiano Ronaldo] has not changed; he is a player that I have always admired because he is a hard worker that always wants more and more.

“He is a real machine and very ambitious. He never ever stops trying to improve.

“Some say he is the best but he still wants to get better, and for that reason I admire him.”

Pique also commented on the longstanding rivalry between Barca and los Blancos, claiming they have surpassedMadrid since the turn of the century, with the help of their youth academy which has produced most of their first-team stars.

“Barcelona have always been behind Real Madrid, but in the last 10 or 15 years we have turned the situation around," he continued.

“We are talking about a Real Madrid that has dominated football for 90 years and that has always been ahead of us.

“We have brought through a great crop of youngsters at the club and this has helped us to compete.

“Real Madrid go one year without winning a title and they spend €160 million on three players: [Asier] Illarramendi, Isco and [Gareth] Bale. Barcelona can sign Neymar for €60 or €70 million but not three players.

“The day we do not have La Masia, things won’t be the same.”

Rooney a main player for Manchester United, says Moyes

    318324_heroa.jpg

David Moyes has praised Wayne Rooney's current form and believes the striker is a "main player" for Manchester United.

After a summer of uncertainty over his future at Old Trafford amid prolonged interest from Chelsea, Goal exclusively revealed in October that the England international is refusing to open talks over a new contract.

The 27-year-old has scored seven goals in 11 appearances for club and country this season, including two in England's final two World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and Poland, and Moyes believes the forward's maturity is reflected in his performances.

"He's at the age in his career where he would be one of the main players and he's certainly a main player for Manchester United," Moyes told reporters.

"He takes responsibility, scores the goals that are required and he's done that from a young age.

"The age he is now, he's got that maturity and it shows in how he plays and the condition he is in with the way he is playing for club and country."

Moyes believes his decision to keep Rooney at United has been vindicated by the striker's displays but admits he found it difficult to prove some critics.

"I saw him like this on the first day of pre-season yet I had to keep telling everyone that was the case because the media thought it was different," said Moyes.

"I saw him in great form. He was in great fettle. His training was fantastic from day one.

"But people kept saying different things and I found it difficult to prove it different.

"You can see by his form and the goals he is scoring that what I was saying was right."

Townsend signs new four-year contract with Tottenham

    327366_heroa.jpg

Tottenham winger Andros Townsend has put pen to paper on a new four-year deal at the club.

The 22-year-old has come to prominence with a series of fine displays for the White Hart Lane outfit this term, having shone on loan at QPR last season.

Townsend has made eight appearances for Andre-Villas Boas' side in all competitions, scoring once and assisting three further goals as he looks to nail down a regular first-team spot.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Loftus Road, where he made 12 appearances and scored two goals but was unable to prevent the club from being relegated to the Championship.

His fine start to the new campaign led to him being called up to Roy Hodgson's England squad for the World Cup qualifying fixtures with Montenegro and Poland.

Townsend capped his international debut with a goal in the 4-1 drubbing of Montenegro, before putting in another assured display against Poland as England secured their place in Brazil as winners of Group H.

Tottenham sit sixth in the Premier League table with 13 points from seven games, and return to top-flight action when they travel to Aston Villa on Sunday.

Liverpool forward Aspas ruled out for five weeks with thigh injury

    303529_heroa.jpg

Liverpool striker Iago Aspas has been ruled out until the beginning of December with a thigh injury.

The Spaniard, who has made six appearances for Brendan Rogers' side since joining from Celta Vigo in the summer, suffered a torn thigh muscle in training on Thursday.

The 26-year-old took to Twitter to reveal the news before the club released a statement confirming the injury.

"Liverpool Football Club today confirmed that Spanish forward Iago Aspas has suffered a torn thigh muscle in training.

"The 26-year-old picked up the injury at Melwood on Thursday and has subsequently been assessed by the Reds' medical staff.

"He is expected to be available for a return by the beginning of December."

Aspas had recently spoken of his desire to force his way back into the Liverpool first team, displaced by on-loan winger Victor Moses, but those plans will have to be put on hold for now.

Brendan Rodgers takes his side to Newcastle on Saturday as the club look to continue their strong start to the season and extend their so far unbeaten league run on the road.

Aspas, however, will play no part in this weekend's fixture and may have to wait for a December 1 return when his side visit Hull City in the league, missing crucial clashes against Arsenal and Everton in the process.

    Huntelaar confirms knee operation

    329635_heroa.jpg

Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has confirmed he will miss three to four months of action after opting to have an operation on his knee.

The 30-year-old had returned to training following a previous knee injury but suffered a further setback on Monday and revealed his disappointment at the prospect of another lengthy lay-off on Twitter.

"It was difficult, but I have decided to undergo an operation. Regeneration time will last three to four months. It is a difficult but necessary step," the 30-year-old announced via the social media site.

Schalke coach, Jens Keller, had earlier given his thoughts on the plight of the Netherlands international on Thursday and insisted the striker had been given the best possible treatment prior to his original return to action.

He said: "We didn't rush him back before he got injured. Usually an injury like his is fine after eight weeks. He felt good.

"He took part in everything and this setback was an accident. He collided with someone in a bad position. This would still have happened even if it was two weeks later."

The German club sit eighth in the Bundesliga after eight games and continue their campaign with a trip to Eintracht Braunschweig on Saturday.

'Chelsea can win everything' - Torres targets quadruple

    322384_heroa.jpg

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres believes the west London club are capable of winning "everything" this season.

Jose Mourinho's side are two points off Premier League leaders Arsenal and have taken three points from a possible six in the group stages of the Champions League.

However, Torres, who has scored twice in all competitions this term, has backed Chelsea to threaten on all fronts.

Asked what his targets are for the season, Torres told the London Evening Standard: "To win everything and it can be realistic."We have a great squad and we have to think positively.

"The main thing is to go step by step. We can't say we're just going to focus on the Premier League and Champions League."We should just think about winning the next game, in winning the next three points, scoring goals, working hard and doing well when we have the chance.

"We want to finish with a trophy. The Premier League would be great, the Champions League even better, both of them massive and a few cups, why not?"
However, Torres is under no illusions as to the level of competition in the Premier League this season, suggesting it is more competitive than any other division in European football. "It’s very difficult. The league is different than any other," he continued.

"It’s more competitive, there are not just two or three teams, there are five or six all with the chance if not to win, to qualify for the Champions League."

Manchester City skipper Kompany ruled out of West Ham clash

    326171_heroa.jpg

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany will miss his side's trip to West Ham on Saturday with a thigh injury.

The Belgian was ruled out of his country's final two World Cup qualifiers after picking up the problem in City's 3-1 win over Everton earlier this month.

Kompany was withdrawn from that game after 34 minutes and manager Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that he will be without the 27-year-old for the trip to Upton Park.

"Vincent is working hard. He is not ready to play but I hope that next week he will do," Pellegrini said on Friday.

"(Martin) Demichelis played 45 minutes with the Under-21s on Wednesday, I think he's in the same shape as Kompany, I hope that next week he'll be ready."

However, Pellegrini can call on Jack Rodwell in midfield after the former Everton man recovered from a hamstring injury.

"Jack Rodwell has no problems, he is fit," the Chilean added.

    Mourinho warns Barcelona over Courtois

    309885_heroa.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has told Barcelona they would be wasting their time in pursuing a move for goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

The Belgium international arrived at Stamford Bridge from Racing Genk in 2011 but is now in his third season on loan at Atletico Madrid, during which time he has blossomed into one of the best keepers in Europe.

And with Victor Valdes set to depart Camp Nou at the end of the season, the Blaugrana are on the hunt for a replacement between the posts, but Mourinho has no interest in sanctioning the exit of a player he holds in high regard.

He told reporters: "We have the best goalkeeper in the world (Petr Cech) and the best young goalkeeper in the world. It's a very good problem. Our goal is safe and financially we are also very safe - the value in the market is the value of the best.

"In this moment I don't think about it. It doesn't worry me because our situation is fantastic and everything is under our control. We control the situation, not Barcelona, Atletico or another team interested in our goalkeepers. We control the situation so that's fine."

The 21-year-old has become a key part of Atleti's rise under Diego Simeone and has lifted the Copa del Rey, Europa League and the Uefa Super Cup with the capital club.

Courtois has played in all eight of his side's Liga games so far this season as the Vicente Calderon club have kept pace with Barcelona at the top of the division with 24 points in an unbeaten start to the season.

Bale will play against Malaga, says Ancelotti

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that Gareth Bale will make his comeback from injury in Saturday's La Liga game against Malaga.

The former Tottenham star has not featured for the Santiago Bernabeu side since the 1-0 home loss against Atletico Madrid last month, but the Blancos boss says that the 24-year-old attacker has fully recovered from his muscular problems.

"Bale's available for tomorrow's game and will get playing time. It's important for him to be part of the team and to play again," Ancelotti explained on the eve of the game in the Spanish capital.

"I'm surprised about the reports about Bale's back injury. They're simply not true. He doesn't have a back problem. Just look at the last few seasons. He would not have been able to play so many games if he had a slipped disc.

"I know about disc protrusions, I had three and they never caused a problem.

"Some say I'm crazy for playing Bale against Villarreal, but I was not the first to play him. He was with Wales before that."

Bale has made three appearances for Madrid so far, scoring once in the process.

    Agent dismisses Muller-Barcelona talk

    302886_heroa.jpg

Thomas Muller's agent, Ludwig Kogl, has insisted that the Bayern Munich star has not held transfer talks with Barcelona.

A recent Punto Pelota report suggested that the Germany international travelled to the Catalan capital at the weekend to meet with Blaugrana representatives, but the 24-year-old's representative has stressed that there's no truth in the rumour.

"Thomas was definitely not in Barcelona on Sunday," Kogl told AZ.

"There's no truth in this. There have not been any talks with Barcelona and we have not negotiated with them."

Muller is a product of the Bayern youth academy and has developed into a key player at the Bundesliga champions since making his first team debut in 2008-09.

The attacker's current deal with the Bavarians runs until June 2017.

Jol plays down Zaha loan link

    329700_heroa.jpg

Martin Jol has distanced himself from speculation linking Fulham with a loan move for Manchester United's Wilfried Zaha.

The 20-year-old's only competitive appearance for the Red Devils since joining up with the Premier League champions' squad in the summer came during the FA Community Shield win over Wigan Athletic at the start of August.

The youngster was immediately loaned back to former club Crystal Palace when he signed for United at the start of 2013, and helped the club secure promotion from the Championship via the play-offs.

Another temporary return to Palace or a loan switch to the likes of Fulham has been mooted, but Jol has cooled talk of the versatile forward heading to Craven Cottage. "He did very well actually in pre-season, so there was no reason to make an enquiry about him," the Dutchman told reporters."I feel that, on the flank, we are okay. We've got five or six, a few options."

The Cottagers are currently struggling for goals having netted just five in seven games, and are in 17th place in the Premier League table with seven points.

Gotze will emulate Messi, says Daum

    64804_heroa.jpg

Christoph Daum is confident that Bayern Munich forward Mario Gotze will reach the same level as Barcelona's Lionel Messi in the coming years.

The Germany international is regarded as one of the biggest talents in Europe, but he has so far been unable to make an impact at the Allianz Arena, primarily because of injury.

Nevertheless, Daum has little doubt that Gotze will eventually prove a big success with the Champions League holders.

"Mario has extraordinary abilities. He will become another Messi. Bayern wouldn't have spent as much money on him if they didn't think he'd become a great player," the former Stuttgart and Bayer Leverkusen coach told Sport1.

"This is a transitional year for Mario. He has not reached the top step-by-step, but has developed incredibly fast in recent years. His progress has halted a bit now due to injury, but that's only normal.

"It's all about adapting this year and I can guarantee that next season will be his big break-through."

Gotze has made just three Bundesliga appearances so far this term.

    Messi set for Barcelona comeback

    329719_heroa.jpg

Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino has received a boost with the news that Lionel Messi is match fit again ahead of this weekend's clash with Osasuna.

The Argentina international was unavailable for the Champions League defeat of Celtic and the Liga win over Real Valladolid because of a thigh strain sustained in last month's trip to Almeria, while he was also absent for his country's World Cup qualifiers with Peru and Uruguay.

However, the 26-year-old attacker resumed full training earlier this week and is now ready to make his Blaugrana return in Pamplona.

"Ready to come back," Messi wrote next to a picture of him training on his Instagram account.

The four-time Ballon d'Or winner has made nine appearances in all competitions for Barca this term, scoring 11 goals.

    Revealed: Cristiano Ronaldo's first nickname

    329757_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo's mother Dolores Aveiro has claimed that the Real Madrid attacker was nicknamed 'crybaby' during his youth.

It had already been revealed that the 28-year-old Portugal international was known as 'Abelhinha' and 'Little Bee' a child, but his emotional reactions to disappointing performances also earned him a less flattering name.

"Cristiano was called 'Crybaby' back in the days," the forward's mother told Clarin.

"The tears would start rolling down his cheeks whenever his team-mates didn’t pass the ball to him or when he or one of the others missed a goal, a pass or even if he or his colleagues didn’t play as well as he wanted."

Ronaldo has been in sublime form for Real Madrid this term, netting 12 goals in 10 official appearances for the Santiago Bernabeu side.

    :love:Januzaj happy at Manchester United

    327515_heroa.jpg

Manchester United's teenage sensation Adnan Januzaj insists he is happy at the club and says that his father will decide which country he will represent.

The 18-year-old midfielder burst onto the scene with two goals in the victory over Sunderland on October 5 but there have been doubts over his long-term Old Trafford future, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Senior United figures were readying a lucrative salary package fearing that they could lose Januzaj, but, despite having not yet put pen to paper on a new deal, the Belgian-born starlet is adamant he is committed to the club.

"I am happy at Manchester United and I want to commit myself 100 per cent in every game to do my best," he told Kosovo-based television station KTV.

"I want to help Manchester United win the Premier League and become the best player in the world."

All the talk following Januzaj's match-winning performance against Sunderland has been focused on his international future, with the youngster eligible to play for England, as well as Albania, Serbia and Turkey although he insists it is his dad who will make the final call.

"It is my dad who decides which national team I will play for so I will listen to him," he concluded.

Januzaj is again expected to start for Manchester United in Saturday's home fixture with Southampton.

    Low signs Germany extension

National team coach Joachim Low has reached an agreement with the German football association (DFB) over a new contract until after Euro 2016.

The 53-year-old's previous deal was due to expire after the 2014 World Cup, but he has now ended all speculation about his future by signing a two-year renewal.

"Working with the team and the coaching staff makes me very happy," Low said at a press conference.

"I feel great motivation to develop the team.

"We are not yet at the end of our journey, we have big goals that we want to achieve together."

Low took over as Germany coach in 2006 after previously serving as assistant coach to Jurgen Klinsmann and has since turned Die Mannschaft into one of world football's top sides again.

He guided Germany to the final at Euro 2008, where they were beaten 1-0 at Spain, before reaching the semi-finals of both the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.

The Germans currently sit second in the Fifa Rankings and qualified for next summer's World Cup after remaining unbeaten in Group C, racking up 28 points from 10 games.

Cabella can join Man United for €18 million, says Fernandez

    329771_heroa.jpg

Montpellier coach Jean Fernandez has opened the door for Manchester United to make a move for Remy Cabella by revealing he would accept a bid of €18 million for the player. The Premier League champions failed with bids for several midfielders over the summer, with their pursuits of Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas ending in defeat.

And though they eventually clinched the signing of Marouane Fellaini from Everton for £27.5m on transfer deadline day, manager David Moyes is still in the market for midfield reinforcements - with Cabella a potential target.

"He is an intelligent boy who has made a good start to the season," Fernandez said.
"Now in the winter transfer window if Manchester United offers €18m, as I see it, he must go."Even if you 'kill the team', you can't refuse."

Cabella has made a fine start to the campaign, scoring five goals and making five assists in the Stade le Mosson club's opening eight games and Fernandez is hoping to see the 23-year-old in a more offensive role.

"We must see if he is able to assume the responsibilities," the 59-year-old added.
"If he is able to play as a number 10, these are the matches that will decide."
