Ibrahimovic escapes punishment for gun gesture

    332594_heroa.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has escaped a ban for his controversial gesture during Paris Saint-Germain's clash with Toulouse in September. The Sweden international was accused of imitating firing a gun towards the Toulouse bench in the Ligue 1 clash, which PSG won 2-0.

Ibrahimovic's actions were met with disapproval by the France's governing body, the LFP, who summoned the former Barcelona and Inter man before a disciplinary committee. However, the 32-year-old has escaped any serious punishment, with the LFP opting to reprimand the in-form striker.

An LFP statement read: "Upon hearing the player's representative Olivier Letang and Mr Roman Voillemot (Counsel) and reading the letter of explanation from Toulouse FC, the commission has sanctioned for Mr Zlatan Ibrahimovic a reprimand for his inappropriate gesture towards the Toulouse FC bench."The decision means that Ibrahimovic can travel with the squad for the trip to Saint-Etienne this weekend, to face a side who took four points off PSG last term.

Coach Laurent Blanc will hope that the Swede can continue his superb recent form as they look to cement their place at the top of the table.

Ibrahimovic has scored 11 goals this season, with six of those coming in PSG's last two victories against Bastia and Anderlecht.

Pellegrini praises Yaya Toure amid racism row

    332649_heroa.jpg

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has praised Yaya Toure for speaking out after allegedly being racially abused by CSKA Moscow fans.

City midfielder Toure claimed to have been targeted by a section of the CSKA support during his side's Champions League win at Arena Khimki on Wednesday.

The Ivorian reported the taunts to referee Ovidiu Hategan and urged governing body Uefa to take action after the game.

And Pellegrini believes Toure was right to be open about the incident, but refused to voice his own opinion on the issue.

"I have spoken with Yaya and he is OK," Pellegrini said. "He did the right thing to say what happened and we will see what Uefa will do about it.

"Uefa has a special campaign against the racists. I think they are doing the right things to make sure there is no repeat but I don’t know what they are going to do in this case.

"But I don't think it is good to keep talking about it [before the hearing]. It is very important Uefa deal with this. They must take their decision about it."

Toure has indicated black players could boycott the 2018 World Cup - which is due to be held in Russia - if insufficient action is taken to eradicate racism.

Balotelli needs to learn from Kaka - Abate

    328607_heroa.jpg

AC Milan defender Ignazio Abate thinks Mario Balotelli can learn a lot from Kaka on how to become a model professional.

The former Manchester City striker has been battling a thigh injury, but the right-back believes he is not taking the necessary steps to return as quickly as possible.

Kaka has also spent the last month nursing an injury, only returning to action the past week, and Abate feels Balotelli can learn a thing or two from the former Real Madrid midfielder’s strict training regimen.

“[Kaka] is a shining example for all, especially for the younger ones,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport. “When he was injured, he came in the morning and left in the evening.

“For someone who has earned as much as he has and already won all he can in his career, he could afford to give the bare minimum, and instead he behaves like a top player.

“He gives everything to return to what he once was.

“[Balotelli] must understand that he is no longer a kid and that certain behaviours are not going to go over well.

“He needs to grow up as quickly as possible.”

However, Abate, 26, is confident the future is still bright for Balotelli and says the striker has all the skills and resources at his disposal to be one of the best players in the world if he can fix his attitude.

“The fact is that he has incredible potential, of which even he realizes. To me, after [Lionel] Messi, [Cristiano] Ronaldo and [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic, he’s next.

“We are fortunate enough to work for a club like Milan and in a place like Milanello.

“It is wrong to think of coming here just to punch the clock, and then go home. We should devote ourselves to our work.”

The former Torino defender’s contract expires at the end of the season, but he admits he would like to continue his playing career at the San Siro, while insisting they are capable of finishing in Serie A's top three again.

“I’m very close to Milan. I see myself here for a long time. I still have a year of my contract left, and my desire is to stay. I am no longer a kid, but not old either. Yet it is true, in a squad like this I hope to be a good example.

“We have the foundation to make another comeback, but we need to be balanced and not make any mistakes. However, this is a team which belongs in the top three.

“I like the return to 4-3-3, the team is more balanced, solid and covered with respect to our playmakers. At the back we still have to grow a lot, but when you undergo 13 goals in eight games it is easy to just blame the defence.”

Along with the defence, Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has shouldered much of the blame for his team’s sluggish start, but the right-back has faith in his coach.

“His greatest quality is balance. He has always transmitted confidence, even in our worst moments. He handles the pressure and in these three years he cannot be accused of anything. He did all he could, including the miracle of third place last year.”

Ancelotti: We have no special plan for Neymar

    332614_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti has ruled out any specific tactical plans to nullify the threat of Neymar in Saturday's Clasico clash between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The Brazilian is poised to make his debut appearance in Spain's most anticipated fixture, but Ancelotti believes it would be futile to focus on a plan to stop the 21-year-old when the Blaugrana are blessed with a wide array of attakcing talent.
"We cannot think of a plan to rein in Neymar because if there is one for him, we must have others for [Lionel] Messi, Alexis [Sanchez] and [Andres] Iniesta," he told a press conference.Barcelona are favourites for the fixture despite not having beaten Madrid since 2011, but Ancelotti believes that could work to his side's advantage.

"I do not know who is the favourite. Everybody thinks that is Barcelona and for us this is not bad," he continued."The timing is good for us. The match is very difficult but last week was good and we improved a lot in all aspects. We can do well in the Camp Nou.

"I have confidence in them. The last time they played at Camp Nou (a 3-1 victory in the Copa del Rey in February) was a great game. We are very excited.

"The key is to have courage and personality to play football, not only to defend. We need character to go to Barcelona and try to play."
The match kicks off at 18:00CET on Saturday.

Manchester City captain Kompany out of Chelsea clash

    326171_heroa.jpg

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany will miss his side's Premier League clash with Chelsea, manager Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed.

The central defender has not featured for his club since before the international break and the Chilean explained that his skipper has not yet recovered from a thigh injury.

"Vincent is still injured, so he will not have a chance to play this game," Pellegrini told the press, though noting that the rest of the squad, including Jack Rodwell, are all fit and available.

"It's a tough game for Manchester City," he added. "We are one point behind them and we must play well if we want to win."

Sergio Aguero comes into the game in fine form after scoring twice against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League and the City boss was effusive in his praise for the Argentine.

"He's a top player," Pellegrini enthused. "I'm always talking to him. For me, he's one of the top five players in the world.

"I hope in the future he continues to be an important player for the club."

Wednesday's match in Russia caused controversy after several players reported racist chanting from the home fans towards Yaya Toure and, while Pellegrini claimed not to have heard the abuse, he warned that "Uefa must make the right decision" on the issue.

'Neymar doesn't dive - players hit him'

    331822_heroa.jpg

Barcelona attacker Neymar has no choice but to go to ground due to the number of fouls committed by opposition defenders, according to former Real Madrid forward and sporting director Predrag Mijatovic.

The Brazilian has been accused of diving on a handful of occasions since his €57 million move to Camp Nou this summer - most notably when Celtic's Scott Brown kicked out at him in the Champions League clash in Glasgow - but Mijatovic believes the 21-year-old is a target for tough-tackling players due to his beguiling ability.

"Neymar gets hit a lot," the Montenegrin told TV programme La Graderia de la Ser. "They hit him and they make mistakes, because he's a great footballer. He carries the ball well when one-on-one and the only way to stop him is to foul him.

"Perhaps because of his physique and all the quality he has, people often have the feeling he dives. But he doesn't dive, they pull him down."

Looking ahead to Saturday's Clasico at Camp Nou, Mijatovic believes there is little to choose between Barca and Real Madrid on paper, but described the meeting as "the most beautiful thing you can see" in modern football.

"The Clasico is the best game there is. Nowadays, in world football, there is no more interesting game than Madrid-Barcelona. It's the most beautiful thing you can see," said the former Madrid director of football.

"In footballing terms, neither team has a clear advantage. Looking at the two squads, they're both good, with players of high quality. In these games you cannot make plans to go and draw, you have to go out to win."

Saturday's clash marks the Clasico debut for coaches Gerardo Martino and Carlo Ancelotti, and Mijatovic believes both men must be given time in their respective roles regardless of the result in Catalunya this weekend.

"Both Martino and Ancelotti have practically just arrived. They need a little time and trust in them," he added.

    Llorente relishing Juventus attacking system

    331975_heroa.jpg

Juventus striker Fernando Llorente feels supporters are starting to see the best of him following his recent good form for the Bianconeri.

The Spain striker scored in the defeat to Real Madrid when deployed as the focal point of a three-man attack and, while he admits recent results have not been good enough, he is relishing a return to a more familiar role up front after his early struggle for form this season.

"I feel at ease in the new system, I've played like this in the past," he told Tuttosport.

"In general, every time I go out on the field I feel better, like I've improved. It's not always easy to play, but I've worked so hard to do so."

Llorente's return to action has helped rebuild his confidence after spending much of last season frozen out of the Athletic Bilbao side, but the 28-year-old feels the controversial red card issued to Giorgio Chiellini at Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday left his efforts in front of goal irrelevant.

"It's true [starting helps to build consistency] but that's not the point. Scoring is important because it gives me confidence, but what is more important is to win and unfortuately we did not succeed against Real," he added.

"Sadly, this wasn't because of our own faults: the referee had a really bad day, the sending off of Chiellini was an incredible mistake."

Ancelotti: It's Ronaldo's time to win Ballon d'Or

    301185_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti believes it is Cristiano Ronaldo's time to win the Ballon d'Or this year, ahead of Lionel Messi and Franck Ribery.

The Portuguese star has played second fiddle to Barcelona ace Messi since winning the prize for the first time back in 2008, with the Argentine claiming the last four titles in a row, but Ancelotti believes he deserves to win the latest crown for the all-round impact he has on the Spanish giants.

"It's Cristiano's moment to win it ahead of Messi and Ribery," Ancelotti told TV programme El Larguero. "He has surprised me the most with his professionalism. He's very serious, he has amazing attention to detail. It's that which helps us the most - he doesn't just score."

Ancelotti went on to explain his decision to allow Mesut Ozil to join Arsenal this summer, claiming he prefers Angel Di Maria for the balance he brings to the team alongside €100 million signing Gareth Bale.

"It was a technical decision [to sell Ozil]," he continued. "I prefer Di Maria for the balance of the team.

"He has less quality than Ozil but, for his character and the way he helps the team, I wanted him. With the arrival of Bale I thought it was more important to have Di Maria than Ozil.

"[Bale] wasn't cheap but that's the price of the market. It was the wish of the player that brought him here. Tottenham offered him more money."

Bale has struggled with injuries in recent weeks, but Ancelotti feels he is now fully fit and could start the Clasico against Barcelona this weekend.

"Since he's been here, he has not had a back problem. The problem was his physical condition, as he hadn't trained. Now he's good, he's ready to play from the start. He could start against Barcelona.

"I asked him and he told me he prefers to play from the right. I think he likes playing from the right so he can shoot from his left foot."

Iker Casillas started the Champions League win over Valencia, but Ancelotti hinted that Diego Lopez will keep his place for Saturday's clash - though he insisted the club captain does not want to leave the club in January.

"It's a question for Iker, but I don't think he thinks like that," he said when asked if the Spain veteran would ask for a move.

"I have spoken with him to explain the situation. When he wants to talk to me, my door is always open. For a coach, to explain the situation is the most difficult.

"I already knew Diego Lopez. In 2006 I wanted to bring him to AC Milan… He started before the pre-season and was very strong. It wasn't an easy decision. Casillas gives me confidence and so I play him in the Champions League, these games are as important as La Liga.

"He is the captain, he has a lot of experience and he maintains the harmony in the team. Iker wants to stay at Madrid and this is good for us. But I've made my decision."

Finally, the former Paris Saint-Germain boss claims his side will face a tough challenge against a confident Barcelona side this weekend, and added that he is closer to Vicente del Bosque as a coach than Madrid predecessor Jose Mourinho.

"Barca play with a lot of confidence because they've changed practically nothing," he added. "When Mourinho was here there were problems but they played fantastically there [at Camp Nou]. I will try to play like the semi-final of the Copa del Rey last year, the 3-1, and not change anything.

"I'm closer to Del Bosque than Mourinho."

Carrick: Man Utd must be more ruthless

    331717_heroa.jpg

Michael Carrick feels Manchester United need to be more ruthless in attack as they look to turn around a below-par start to the season.

David Moyes' side have won just one from four Premier League matches at Old Trafford this season and had to battle to a 1-0 victory against Real Sociedad in the Champions League on Wednesday.

United sit in eighth place, eight points behind league leaders Arsenal, and Carrick knows they need to start putting teams to the sword.

He told reporters: "We're creating chances and opportunities and the attacking lads are looking dangerous. It's just not falling for them at certain times.

"You're concerned more when you're not creating chances and the lads aren't getting opportunities, but with the quality that we have I think they'll start going in a lot more."

United have drawn at home against Chelsea and Southampton, and lost to Liverpool, West Brom and Manchester City.

Carick continued: "That's the frustrating thing. We've shown signs in certain games - moments when you think 'This is it, we're on the up' - and then in the next game, for some reason, it doesn't go how you'd expect.

"That's the challenge we face, really. We have to improve again on Saturday. It's tough.

"The Southampton game you can look at and say we really should have won. We were 1-0 up, we had chances to score more. Our keeper hasn't really had anything to do and then we go and concede from a corner, so you could say we could do with defending corners better.

"It's fine margins - little details.

"We've been good at getting on top of those things and seeing games out, and I am sure we'll do that in the games we have coming up."

Carrick has been impressed with Wayne Rooney this season and joked about the striker turning 28 on Thursday.

"He's getting on, isn't he?" he remarked. "I'm sure he's looking to improve, everyone can improve. Look at [Ryan] Giggsy [at 39], he's incredible - from not playing for a bit and then to finish the game [against Sociedad] like he did, it sets an example to everyone.

"Wayne, if he wants to, can carry on playing on for a long time yet. He's 28 and they say you're just getting into your peak around that age, at 30, 32, so I'm sure he's looking to improve, and he's playing well at the moment."

Asked if the striker is more focused than last season, Carrick added: "I don't know, to be honest. You can't question his focus at all, really.

"As players, you have good spells and spells where it doesn't quite go for you.

"He's having a great one at the moment, and I'm sure it will continue for a long time."

:angry::angry::baffled:'Man Utd need 10 new players to win the title' - Rodgers

    330102_heroa.jpg

Brendan Rodgers has fired back at Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United following the Scot's claims that Liverpool are some way short of winning the Premier League.

Ferguson spoke at length about United's bitterest rivals in his latest autobiography, criticising the money spent by Kenny Dalglish in his second spell as manager and also claiming that the current squad needs eight new players to stand a chance of winning the title.

But Rodgers believes the Reds are in a better position than United: "That's probably two short of what they need then."

The Reds boss also leapt to the defence of Jordan Henderson after Ferguson singled out the midfielder in his book.

As well as inisisting that he would never have spent £20 million on Stewart Downing, Ferguson described Henderson as having an odd gait and running with a straight back which, he contends, will cause the 23-year-old long-term injury problems.

But Rodgers, who also reacted incredulously to Ferguson's claims that Steven Gerrard was never a "top, top player", is disappointed with the Scot's comments.

"I think if Sir Alex ever bumps into Jordan he might want to apologise for that," the Liverpool boss told reporters.

"The comment surprised me, I have to be honest, coming from someone with such status in the game. Maybe it was meant as flippant but to a young player making his way in the game it could be damaging.

"Every player is different, and every player at this club has had his strengths and weaknesses medically assessed. The statement in terms of Jordan was inappropriate.

"Sir Alex is in a position to say what he likes, and you don't have to agree with it, but I think there is a sadness to this as it is something that will probably stay with people for a long while.

"I think every football person would have enjoyed his achievements in the game and the legacy he has left, but now people are only going to talk about the comments in the book.

"In a way I can understand some of the comments, when you have been chasing a club as successful as Liverpool you have to find ways to bring them down.

"But this is a club that has class and history and in the modern era is fighting to get back to that level again.

"I don't really want to give the book any more publicity than it has already had, there's been enough reaction in the past few days.

"Sir Alex has obviously bided his time and now feels that his retirement is the time to put a few things straight. It is his right to do that, but I won't be rushing out to buy a copy."

    :shocked:Mysterious messages at Copacabana

    332266_heroa.jpg

Rio de Janeiro was the scene of yet more mysterious signs and symbols this week as a series of unidentified messages were spotted around the World Cup host city.
On Monday, the usually tranquil Leme neighborhood was the talk of Rio as the mountainside that overlooks the beach was illuminated with the giant message: #WINNERTAKESEARTH

The following day it was the turn of the internationally-famous Copacabana neighbourhood, which saw its central region plastered with the same hashtagged text.

Guests at the luxurious city hotel, the Copacabana Palace, left their rooms to get a better view of the bizarre transmission.

The hill of Santa Marta, close to the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, was struck on Wednesday. It featured a giant circle with a football shape carved into the centre of the image. Fans driving to the Maracana to watch Flamengo play Botafogo stopped their cars to take photos."I have lived in Rio since the day I was born and have never seen anything like it. I'm a little scared because I do not know what this symbol means," said Carlos Perez, a Rio resident.

On Sunday, a mysterious hologram of the same symbol was projected on Rio's Sugarloaf mountain, while London sports venue Hackney Marshes was gouged by a three-metre football the following day. The digital billboards of New York City’s Times Square have also displayed similar messages.

:love:Van Persie set for Stoke City return, says Manchester United boss Moyes
    332533_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager David Moyes expects Robin van Persie to return to first-team duties against Stoke City after nursing minor injuries in midweek.

The 30-year-old missed the club's 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad in the Champions League on Wednesday night due to issues with his toes and groin.

However, Moyes has revealed that he will make a timely return on Saturday, with Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley set to miss out.

"Robin has a good chance [of playing]. He's had problems with his toes and a little bit with his groin as well, but I think he should be okay," Moyes told the club's official website.

"He’s had a little bit of training as well. Everybody’s improving and the only one who’s a doubt at the moment is Danny Welbeck, who has some fluid on his knee.

"Tom Cleverley is still recovering from his calf but overall we're pretty strong."

Moyes was dealt a blow by learning that Marouane Fellaini will require attention to an injured wrist at the end of the year, though he believes his only summer signing has the strength the continue playing with a wrist brace.

He continued: "It's never easy when you have an injury that needs something doing to it.

"People who play football will tell you you use your hands and arms quite a lot for balance and pushing off, so it can be awkward when you’ve got an injury.

"But he is fine, he’s getting used to it now and hopefully he can play even in the condition he’s in."

Rodriguez: Monaco want to win Ligue 1

    324786_heroa.jpg

Monaco forward James Rodriguez has revealed the club have Paris Saint-Germain's Ligue 1 crown in their sights and are confident of wrestling the title away from the reigning champions.

After 10 games, les Rouge et Blanc sit two points behind les Parisiens in second place just a matter of months after sealing promotion from Ligue 2.

The winger has amassed four assists already this season since arriving from Porto in a joint €60 million deal with Joao Moutinho this summer, and says winning the league is the club's sole target.

“At the moment everything is going well, but we still need to improve some things,” he told Le 10 Sport. "To win titles, we must always be focused. When a team wants to be champion, it must pay attention to detail.

“We want to be champions, winning Ligue 1. That’s why we’re here, that’s why we work every day. We want to win titles.

“I am pleased to be at Monaco, as is my family. It is a quiet town, we love living here.

“Sporting-wise, I hope this goes well. We still have some way to go to achieve our goals in Ligue 1 and qualify for the Champions League.”

Monaco will play host to Lyon on Sunday.

Moratti could stay on as Inter president

    307357_heroa.jpg

Former Inter owner Massimo Moratti says the club's new billionaire backers have offered him the option of staying on at San Siro as president.

After 18 years at the Nerazzurri helm, the 68-year-old sold a majority share of the club last week to International Sports Capital, an Indonesian company run by billionaire Erick Thohir.

But despite a lengthy spell with the club, Moratti is unsure as to whether or not he will accept the offer.

“They were very courteous to ask me if I would like to step in as president,” he told InterChannel.

“We will see if it would be beneficial for Inter or if it would be better for the club to change under the guidance of new ownership.

“Having been used to a certain role, it’s difficult to assume another one.”

International Sports Capital will become just the second foreign majority owners of a Serie A club, after Roma were bought by a Boston-based American team of investors that includes Thomas DiBenedetto, a part owner of the Boston Red Sox.
