Conte: Pirlo should win Ballon d'Or

    331330_heroa.jpg

Andrea Pirlo deserves to win the 2013 Ballon d'Or, according to his Juventus boss Antonio Conte.

The 34-year-old was pivotal in the Old Lady's surge to Scudetto glory last season, and remains a key man for both the Bianconeri and Italy.

And though the likes of Franck Ribery, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are clear favourites for the award, Conte admits he would give it to the classy playmaker.

"For me, if there was one winner it would be Pirlo," he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I know it's unlikely to happen, what with players like Messi, Ronaldo, Ribery and [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic up for the award, but he deserves it. It would be great to see him win it."

Conte also expressed his disbelief that Francesco Totti has not made the 23-man shortlist, considering his inspirational performances for Roma so far this season.

"It is incredible that there is no Totti on the list," he continued.

"Fifa must simply have forgotten him."

'Arsenal made a mistake letting me go' - Kolo Toure out for Wenger revenge

    326671_heroa.jpg

Kolo Toure is keen to prove Arsene Wenger wrong when Liverpool meet Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday.

The centre-back spent seven years in north London - winning the Premier League once and FA Cup twice - before being sold to Manchester City for £15 million.

Toure has since joined Liverpool and is gunning for the win to leapfrog table-topping Arsenal, but admits he owes Wenger a debt for guiding him during the earlier stages of his career.

"I think it's going to be a great game for me to play," Toure told the Liverpool Echo. "I had some great times there and it was a big part of my life.

"Without Arsene I wouldn't be here. He was the one who saw me. He's a fantastic manager and gave me my chance to play football in this country. But now is not the time to talk about him. He knows I've been talking about him all the time.

"It's always special to go back there but at the same time I want to show on Saturday that Arsenal made a mistake by letting me go. I'm going there to fight. I want to show them what I can do and help my team - Liverpool - to win.

"Right now I don't want to think about any of the good things that Arsene did for me as I'm focused on getting those three points."

A win on Saturday - coupled with Chelsea failing to beat Newcastle in the earlier kick-off - would see Liverpool move back to the top of the table, and Toure acknowledges the tough task but is confident in his squad's ability.

"I'll definitely try to do my best to show them that I'm still a great player," Toure said. "But I need to perform for my team - that is the most important thing.

"It's going to be a fantastic game and it's a good opportunity for us. I can't wait for it. They have started the season really well but Arsenal have always been a good team.

"No matter what players they've had there, they're always good because they have a great manager. He's really intelligent and knows what he's doing.

"Of course it will be difficult but we are a strong team and we have a great manager as well. They know that we pose a threat to them too and they know it will be a tough game for them.

"We know it's going to be a really good game of football and we will give everything we've got to win it."

Klopp signs Dortmund extension until 2018

    334528_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund have announced on their official website that they have reached an agreement with Jurgen Klopp over a new contract until the summer of 2018.

The 46-year-old's previous deal with the Bundesliga giants was due to expire in June 2016 and a number of clubs were supposedly closely monitoring Klopp's situation at BVB.

However, he has now ended all speculation about his future by signing for two additional seasons.

"It's an honour that some big clubs rate my work at Dortmund, but I'm not the type of person who wonders whether the grass is greener elsewhere," Klopp commented on his renewal.

"It's important to be at the right place at the right time and Dortmund is the right place for me.

"I will tell interested teams the same that I would have told them before: 'It's flattering if there's interest, but I have a contract with Dortmund until 2018 and I tend to fulfil contracts, even if that's surprising to some people.

"'So thank you, but no chance.'"

Klopp joined Dortmund from Mainz in the summer of 2008 and has since guided them to two Bundesliga titles, one DFB-Pokal win and the Champions League final.

Dortmund will trouble Bayern, says Hoeness

    334438_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness believes Borussia Dortmund will be challenging for the Bundesliga title right until the end of the season.

Jurgen Klopp's men currently sit second in the league table, trailing the Bavarians by just one point, and Hoeness thinks his side will face a tough task to shake off last year's runners-up.

"Dortmund have presented themselves just like we expected them to do. They are the toughest opponent we will have to beat this season," Hoeness told Sport Bild.

"Even if we cannot write off Bayer Leverkusen either, I have no doubt that the duel with Dortmund will last right until the end of the season."

Hoeness then went on to stress that Pep Guardiola's men can still win matches even if they're not on top form and stressed that he's confident FCB will be successful this term.

"The team showed against Hertha that they can also win games without playing 'tiki-taka'. We can also win matches by fighting for it.

"I am very optimistic about the remainder of the season."

Mignolet backs Liverpool for title tilt

    334486_heroa.jpg

Simon Mignolet has backed Liverpool to build on their excellent start and mount a Premier League title challenge.

Brendan Rodgers' side travel to leaders Arsenal on Saturday and will go top with a victory if Chelsea fail to beat Newcastle United in the early kick-off.

Liverpool have not won the title since 1990 and have failed to finish in the top four for three seasons, but Mignolet is confident the depth and quality of the squad is good enough to keep pace with their rivals.

"We're near the top of the table and so far things have gone well," the Belgian said, in quotes reported by The Daily Express.

"From my experiences at Sunderland I know that injuries and suspensions can play a big part.

"Here the squad is deeper and we should be able to deal with stuff like that in a better way."

This weekend's trip to the Emirates Stadium begins a run of three away matches in four games for Liverpool, with the Merseyside derby against Everton and a visit to Hull City coming after the visit of Fulham.

Richards: I'm not leaving Manchester City

    334469_heroa.jpg

Micah Richards has expressed his desire to spend the next decade at Manchester City, swatting aside rumours he is considering an exit.

The defender, who recently returned to action following a hamstring injury, joined City in 2005 and has since made over 200 appearances for the club.

Richards has reportedly attracted interest at home and abroad but the 25-year-old wants to stay where he is for the foreseeable future.

"I'm not leaving City," Richards told The Sun.

"It's my club and I love it here. Ten more years - that's my aim.

"I am back fit now and believe when I'm fit I'm as good as anyone in the division playing that role [full-back]."

Richards made his return in the 5-0 Capital One Cup victory against Wigan in September and also played the full 90 minutes of the Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich, and the Premier League triumph at West Ham.

    Robben flattered by PSG links

    332082_heroa.jpg

Arjen Robben has admitted that he feels flattered to be linked with Paris Saint-Germain, but has insisted that he's happy with life at Bayern Munich.

A recent report suggested that the Ligue 1 champions are considering making a move for the Netherlands international in the January transfer window, but Robben has made it clear that he's not thinking about leaving Bayern for now.

"It's always an honour when a big team [like PSG] show an interest in signing you," Robben was quoted as saying by Bild.

"But everybody knows that I am feeling very well at Bayern at the moment.

"I don't know anything about the rumour and I only want to think about playing football."

The 29-year-old has a contract with Bayern until the summer of 2015 having made the move from Real Madrid just over four years ago for an estimated €25 million.

Podolski returns to training to provide Arsenal fitness boost

    309127_heroa.jpg

Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski is closing in on a return to first-team action after taking part in training on Tuesday.

The Germany international has been sidelined since August after picking up a hamstring injury in the Champions League play-off victory over Fenerbahce, with boss Arsene Wenger anticipating that he could be out for up to 10 weeks.

Podolski now appears to be on the verge of being available for selection once again, however, after he posted a picture on his official Instagram page in full training gear at Arsenal's London Colney training base.

A tweet that accompanied the picture read: "I've been waiting for this moment - back on the pitch!"

Podolski had begun the season in impressive form, scoring twice in a 3-1 Premier League win at Fulham on August 24 before picking up the injury in the 2-0 triumph over the Turkish outfit three days later.

The former Bayern Munich star has had to frustratingly watch on as his Gunners team-mates continue to lead the way at the top of the Premier League, with Saturday's victory over Crystal Palace keeping them two points clear at the summit.

Arsenal will be looking to get back to winning ways against Liverpool on Saturday, however, after they were dumped out of the Capital One Cup by Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

Real Madrid 7-3 Sevilla: Seventh heaven for Bale & Ronaldo

    334783hp2.jpg

Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo scored five goals between them as Real Madrid romped to a 7-3 win in a thrilling clash with Sevilla on Wednesday.

Ronaldo struck a first-half penalty before netting twice in the second period to become the club's fourth-highest Liga goalscorer with 157 goals, one more than the legendary Ferenc Puskas.

On a record-breaking night at Santiago Bernabeu, Bale also capped his first start at home with two first-half strikes.

Madrid saw their 3-0 lead reduced before the break as an Ivan Rakitic penalty and close-range strike from Carlos Bacca brought the visitors to within a goal.

The hosts, however, turned on the style in the second half as Karim Benzema and Ronaldo both found the net twice to seal a comfortable victory, despite Rakitic curling home a third for the visitors. Rakitic also missed from the spot and Stephane M'Bia was sent off for two yellow cards in a frantic encounter.

Carlo Ancelotti made four changes from Saturday's Clasico defeat to Barcelona, while Sevilla - without an away win in 13 months - made a single change from their victory over Osasuna.

Madrid enjoyed the perfect start following a low-key performance at Camp Nou and took the lead through Bale in the 14th minute.

Isco ran the ball out of his own half and played a neat ball into Benzema, the Frenchman rolled the ball back into the Wales international and he fired into the top corner.

Sevilla were struggling to find any end product despite neat build-up play when they did have the ball, and their task became even tougher when Bale netted his second of the night.

Madrid were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal after a crude challenge by Rakitic on Ronaldo in the 26th minute. Bale took the set piece and saw his effort deflect off the wall to wrong-foot Beto as it flew into the opposite corner.

The hosts moved 3-0 ahead after some poor defending from Fernando Navarro allowed Isco to dispossess him on the edge of the area. The defender then brought the forward down inside the area and Ronaldo made no mistake from the spot.

Sevilla were given a way back into the game when Sergio Ramos bundled Diogo Figueiras to the floor in the 38th minute and they had a penalty of their own.

Rakitic grabbed the ball and made no mistake with a well-placed spot-kick for his first goal of the season.

And the visitors reduced the deficit even further two minutes later as Vitolo and Jairo Samperio combined well to give Bacca the easy task of firing into the empty goal.

Unai Emery's side should have levelled early in the second half after creating a fantastic opening for Jairo, but he was unable to convert it and the hosts broke on the counterattack with Ronaldo.

Ronaldo found Bale on the right who delivered a low cross to Benzema and the Frenchman fired home to end a seven-game run without a goal.

On the hour mark, Ronaldo netted his second of the game after meeting a cross from Bale to fire past Beto, but Rakitic kept his side in the game with an exquisite finish from the edge of the area after neat work from substitute Diego Perotti.

But the night belonged to Portugal international Ronaldo as he completed his hat-trick in the 71st minute before Benzema added his second in the 80th minute to secure the win, with Rakitic slamming a spot kick against the crossbar in between Madrid's sixth and seventh goals.

Tottenham 2-2 Hull City (8-7 pens): Spurs through after dramatic shootout

    334692hp2.jpg

Tottenham picked up their second win over Hull City in four days, triumphing in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday.

Spurs edged the Premier League encounter between the sides 1-0 on Sunday but needed a shootout to move into their first quarter-final in the competition for four years, Ahmed Elmohamady missing the decisive kick in sudden death to hand the hosts an 8-7 win on penalties.

Gylfi Sigurdsson put the hosts ahead early on in stunning fashion, as he collected a ball from Kyle Naughton and turned neatly away from Curtis Davies before firing an unstoppable effort into Eldin Jakupovic's right-hand corner from outside the box.

Davies then brought Hull level after 52 minutes when he nudged home with a good deal of help from Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel.

It looked for a moment as if the defender might have spurned the chance when he directed Elmohamady's teasing delivery back across goal but Friedel failed to collect the ball, allowing it to trickle over the line.

That proved to be the final goal of normal time, with Paul McShane giving Hull hope with his crashing header before Harry Kane fired Spurs level two minutes into the second half of extra time.

The sides could not be separated after 120 minutes and Sigurdsson scored the opening penalty before Aaron McLean's kick was saved well by Friedel.

Jermain Defoe, Stephen Quinn, Jan Vertonghen and George Boyd all then converted, before Erik Lamela's effort was saved to allow Gedo to level matters for Hull.

Kane kept cool to fire past Jakupovic and Nick Proschwitz then sent the shootout into sudden death, where the likes of Paulinho and David Meyler kept their nerve before Elmohamady's kick was saved to end a run of seven successive penalty shootout defeats for Spurs.

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas made eight changes from Sunday's victory at White Hart Lane, with Kaboul coming in for his first start since the 2-0 Europa League win over Anzhi Makhachkala on October 3.

Bruce brought Danny Graham, Robert Koren and Stephen Quinn into Hull's starting XI, while also handing Jakupovic his first start of the season. Leading goalscorer Robbie Brady failed to make the bench as he continues to recover from hernia surgery.

Spurs almost went ahead after nine minutes when McShane, under pressure from the lingering Defoe, headed a Paulinho delivery just past his own post. The Brazilian midfielder then lashed a shot wide as the hosts began to dominate possession and create chances.

And after 16 minutes, Tottenham's dominance was rewarded when Sigurdsson cleverly turned his marker and smashed a long-range drive past a helpless Jakupovic.

Following Villas-Boas's comments on the "difficult" atmosphere at White Hart Lane during Sunday's game, Sigurdsson's goal certainly gave the home fans something to cheer and Spurs continued to enjoy plenty of the ball.

Hull were level seven minutes after the interval, though, courtesy of Friedel's error when dealing with Davies's close-range effort.

Tottenham substitute Kane almost spared his side extra time but his 20-yard effort in the final minute of normal time cannoned back off the post.

Nine minutes into extra time, McShane's powerful header had too much for Friedel, only for Kane to bring Tottenham back into the game by striking left-footed past Jakupovic inside the area.

This forced the penalty shootout, with Friedel atoning for his earlier error by saving Elmohamady's penalty to ensure that his side will face West Ham at home in the quarter-final.

Juventus 4-0 Catania: Conte's men thump 10-man visitors

    334678hp2.jpg

Juventus stayed hot on the heels of Serie A leaders Roma with a massive 4-0 win over Catania in Turin on Wednesday.

Catania posed a threat on the counterattack early on, but Juventus took a deserved lead in the 26th minute as Carlos Tevez laid the ball off for Arturo Vidal on the edge of the area and his low strike found the net via two deflections.
Juve's second goal arrived only eight minutes later as Sergio Almiron tripped compatriot Tevez just outside the visitors' area and Andrea Pirlo placed the free kick into the top corner on his 100th appearance for the club.
The away side posed more of a threat after half-time, but Juve got the third goal in the 65th minute as Tevez went around the goalkeeper and slotted home following Fernando Llorente's knock-down.

A fourth duly arived with just under 20 minutes to go as substitute Sebastian Giovinco did well down the left before cutting back into the area for Leonardo Bonucci and the defender calmly found the net.

Catania's miserable night was compounded when Tiberio Guarente was sent off late on for a rash challenge on Claudio Marchisio. Juventus had only lost once in their 12 league matches against Catania since 2006 and the visitors rarely looked like improving on that record as the champions controlled proceedings throughout.
Antonio Conte made three changes from Juve's 2-0 win over Genoa on Sunday, with the most notable alteration seeing Marchisio replace Paul Pogba, while Catania changed four players.

Tevez was particularly lively in the first 10 minutes as he fired just over from 20 yards, before volleying straight at Mariano Andujar after latching on to Bonucci’s lofted pass.

Juventus had been unlucky in front of goal, but they opened the scoring 26 minutes in as Vidal’s low shot was deflected past the helpless Andujar.

A few moments later the referee ignored Tevez’s penalty claims as former Juve man Nicola Legrottaglie barged the Argentina international over, but the hosts did double their lead in the 34th minute thanks to a pin-point Pirlo free kick.

Catania coach Luigi De Canio saw his side begin the second half well, but Bruno Petkovic spurned two chances as he headed off target from a free-kick before rounding Gianluigi Buffon and shooting wide.

Tevez put the game beyond all doubt with 25 minutes to go as he coolly took the ball past Andujar and poked into an empty net, but the hosts were not finished yet.

Juve got their fourth goal of the game 71 minutes in as Bonucci found the net from close range after good work down the left by Giovinco. With six minutes left, Guarente received a straight red card for a tough tackle on Marchisio, compounding Catania's defeat as Juve completed a 23nd consecutive league match in which they have scored.

Newcastle 0-2 Manchester City (AET): Negredo & Dzeko ensure progress for Pellegrini

    334766hp2.jpg

Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko scored in extra time to spare Manchester City's blushes in a 2-0 Capital One Cup victory at Newcastle.

Newcastle will feel hard done by after taking the match to Manuel Pellegrini's side but they failed to find a breakthrough.

Alan Pardew's men created the best chances of the first half and thought that they had the lead through a close-range Shola Ameobi effort but he was adjudged to be offside.

City – who last won the competition in 1976 - improved after half-time with former Newcastle man James Milner coming closest with a long-range curler. Papiss Cisse wasted a great chance to put the hosts ahead in extra time when he volleyed straight at Costel Pantilimon.

And Newcastle were duly punished by Negredo's side-footed effort from Dzeko's low centre, before the Bosnia-Herzegovina international added gloss to the scoreline when he finished Milner's sublime pass.

Both teams took the opportunity to rotate their squads, Ameobi making a rare start for Newcastle, while Pantilimon replaced under-fire goalkeeper Joe Hart for City.

In a lacklustre opening, Newcastle came closest to opening the scoring when Ameobi flicked on Tim Krul's long pass and Cisse lofted his effort over the goalkeeper and just wide of the post.

Some stout defending gave rgw Magpies a solid base and they were nearly rewarded on the half-hour mark when Ameobi's half-volley forced Pantilimon into a smart one-handed save.

Pardew's side thought that they had taken the lead with the next attack when Ameobi tapped home Cisse's centre but his celebrations were curtailed by the offside flag.

After struggling to make an impact in the first half, City came out with more intent after the break and nearly went ahead when Jesus Navas dispossessed Krul and laid back to Milner, who curled his 25-yard effort at the open goal just wide.

City were now in the ascendancy and Negredo wasted a golden opportunity to grab the winner. The Spain international received Dzeko's lay-off in the area but took too many touches before chipping tamely at Krul. That would prove the best opportunity of the closing stages as the match headed for extra time.

Newcastle made a fast-paced start after the restart and Cisse missed his side's clearest chance of the game when he sprung the offside trap only to shoot straight at Pantilimon.

That miss would prove costly as City edged ahead in the ninth minute of extra time, Dzeko breaking down the left and crossing low for Negredo to calmly slot past Krul.

And, in the 105th minute, the game was put beyond doubt. Milner drove at the Newcastle defence and played a superb pass with the outside of his foot to Dzeko, who rounded Krul and slotted into the empty net.

Newcastle almost grabbed a consolation but Joleon Lescott cleared Hatem Ben Arfa's driven effort off the line as City booked their place in the last eight.

AC Milan 1-1 Lazio: Ciani denies hosts victory

    334723hp2.jpg

AC Milan poor run of results continued as Lazio held them to a 1-1 draw at San Siro on Wednesday.

The Brazilian combined with Mario Balotelli nine minutes after the interval, sending a sumptuous curling effort into the top right corner in a true moment of quality in an otherwise dour affair. It was Kaka's first goal of the season, and one incredibly similar to a strike he netted against the same opponents in a 4-1 win back in September 2008.

But it was not enough for Milan to seal three points as Michael Ciani headed home from an Antonio Candreva cross with 18 minutes to go to secure his side a point.
Kaka was given just his second league start of the season as Massimiliano Allegri made four changes from Sunday's 3-2 defeat at Parma, while Lazio boss Vladimir Petkovic also rotated heavily.Just five Lazio players who started the club's 2-0 win over Cagliari survived, with German striker Miroslav Klose – who came off the bench to score on Sunday – among the new inclusions.

Balotelli, who came in for criticism from Allegri after his performance on Sunday, tested Lazio goalkeeper Federico Marchetti as early as the second minute, driving into space before unleashing a shot from 25 yards which the goalkeeper parried low to his right.

Kaka was next to threaten for the hosts, fizzing an effort narrowly over the bar from 20 yards in the 14th minute following a swift counter-attack.The Brazilian went even closer four minutes later, dragging his shot just wide of the left post after being found inside the box by Sulley Muntari. As the half wore on the home side assumed total control, but Milan's Riccardo Montolivo saw two thumping drives easily handled by Marchetti.

Klose wasted Lazio's first real chance of the game five minutes after the break, with the veteran's touch letting him down when better control would have seen him with just Milan goalkeeper Gabriel to beat from eight yards.

Four minutes later Kaka put Milan in front, receiving Balotelli's pass from the left before curling an unstoppable shot beyond a helpless Marchetti from 20 yards.
It was not enough to stop the visitors though, who despite showing little attacking threat, equalised with 18 minutes to go.French defender Caini was the scorer, rising unchallenged to glance home Candreva's cross from the right from six yards.

Klose, with eight minutes to go, had a chance to secure Lazio's first away league win against Milan since August 1989, but his tame effort was straight at Gabriel, as both sides shared the spoils.
