Rayo Vallecano 2-3 Real Madrid: Lucky escape for los Blancos in dramatic derby

    335915hp2.jpg

Real Madrid were given an almighty scare before holding on to claim a vital 3-2 victory over Rayo Vallecano on Saturday night.

The visitors looked to be on course for another big win after Cristiano Ronaldo's double, which sandwiched a Karim Benzema strike, but two penalties in as many second-half minutes from Jonathan Viera put a different complexion on the match.

Madrid held on despite late pressure, though, closing the gap on leaders Barcelona to six points, leaving their hosts rooted to the foot of the table.

Rayo boss Paco Jemez made only one change from their defeat at Osasuna, bringing in Nacho Martinez for Alberto Bueno. In contrast, Carlo Ancelotti continued to rotate his squad as he made six alterations from their win over Sevilla, with Xabi Alonso making his first start of the season.

Fresh from putting seven past Sevilla on Wednesday, Madrid appeared in clinical mood again and it took Ronaldo only three minutes to break the deadlock, as he collected Luka Modric's pass and confidently placed an effort into the bottom far corner.

That strike was his 19th in 15 matches this season, making it his best start to a campaign, and although Rayo had a goal disallowed through Iago Falque, Madrid continued to stretch the hosts' defence.

Bale set up the next two goals at Estadio de Vallecas as his right-footed cross was headed past Ruben by Benzema after 31 minutes, the Frenchman's third goal of the week.

And the Welshman squared to Ronaldo three minutes into the second half for Real's third, with the visitors seemingly in cruise control.

But the rampant visitors saw their progress halted soon after as Dani Carvajal brought down Viera in the box on 53 minutes, and the striker picked himself up to convert the penalty.

Remarkably, he was afforded the opportunity to reduce the deficit further just two minutes later - Marcelo the offender this time, fouling Falque after Joaquin Larrivey's header had come back off the crossbar. Viera kept his cool to double his tally and bring it back to 3-2, with Madrid clearly rocking.

Jemez's side thought they had equalised with 25 minutes to go, but Diego Lopez tipped Bueno's effort on to the post.

Saul missed a glorious chance to equalise in the area with just over 10 minutes to play as he knocked wide while off balance, before Ronaldo forced Ruben into a smart double save at the other end.

Right-back Tito headed narrowly wide of Lopez's post in stoppage time, but Madrid claimed the points to extend Rayo's losing streak against their illustrious neighbours to 11 matches.

Allegri: Fiorentina loss 'worst' moment as Milan boss

    333567_heroa.jpg

AC Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri admitted Saturday's 2-0 loss to Fiorentina represented the lowest point of his San Siro reign to date.

Juan Vargas and Borja Valero struck either side of the break to heap more misery on the Rossoneri, who have now lost five of their 11 Serie A games so far this season.

But though fans unfurled offensive banners and hurled insults at the team after this latest setback, Allegri does not regard his position as untenable, and is optimistic a planned training camp will get Milan back on track.

"The last half-hour of tonight’s game was really embarrassing," the 46-year-old told reporters after the game. "It’s the worst moment in my spell at Milan.

"When things go badly, there are many causes. The training retreat is not a punishment. It will help the team to take more responsibility. We need to get back on our feet.

"I can only thank the fans as they always support us. It's only normal that they protest after a defeat like this one.

"The team cannot play as badly as they did tonight. We need to find the solution to get out of this moment. Staying together will help us prepare for Barcelona and Chievo, above all psychologically."

Critics have been quick to blame lacklustre transfer activity as the cause of the San Siro giant's downfall, but Allegri has stood by the club's summer dealings, preferring instead to pin the blame on injuries.

"It hasn't got anything to do with the transfer market. We have had many injuries and we have to regain our balance," he reasoned.

"We’re missing [Stephan] El Shaarawy, so we don’t have many options out wide at the moment. The players can't be criticised for the effort they put in tonight.

"It was just one of those nights where it just doesn't work. Right now I have to make the team feel calm. We need to be more exuberant."

Allegri won the Scudetto in his first year in charge, but barely secured Champions League qualification last term after the departures of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva to Paris Saint-Germain.

Manchester City step up Otamendi pursuit

    303016_heroa.jpg

Manchester City are stepping up their pursuit of Porto defender Nicolas Otamendi ahead of a potential January swoop.

City scout Rob Newman made a trip to Portugal last week, where he watched Argentina centre-half Otamendi and long-term target Eliaquim Mangala impress in a 3-1 win over Sporting Lisbon.

City made enquiries for the €40 million-rated Mangala in the summer and although the Premier League side maintain an interest in the France international, the 25-year-old Otamendi has become the priority for manager Manuel Pellegrini.

Porto value the defender at €30m and, with City having made an indifferent start to the new season - despite bringing in new talent to the tune of over €100m - the club are prepared to open their cheque book again.

Without captain Vincent Kompany, who is yet to recover from a thigh injury which could keep him out of his side’s next three games, City have looked vulnerable defensively, particularly away from home, where they have already lost on three occasions.

Pellegrini tried to bolster his defensive ranks over the summer but failed in his attempt to tempt Real Madrid centre-half Pepe to Etihad Stadium, while the club also made enquiries for Mangala.

Ultimately, City managed to sign only 32-year-old Martin Demichelis on a two-year deal from Atletico Madrid on deadline day, and with no talks planned to extend the contract of Joleon Lescott, whose deal expires in the summer, the club are ready to spend when the window reopens in January.

    Ancelotti blasts complacent Madrid

    334861_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has blasted his team's slack attitude after their defensive frailties were again exposed in Saturday's 3-2 victory at Rayo Vallecano.

Los Blancos had surged into a three-goal lead through Cristiano Ronaldo, who struck twice, and Karim Benzema but narrowly avoided dropping two precious points after Jonathan Viera's quick-fire double from the penalty spot.

After citing similar struggles containing Sevilla's comeback attempt in Wednesday's 7-3 win at the Santiago Bernabeu, Ancelotti demanded an end to his side's propensity for complacency.

"Conceding like we have in these past two games cannot be a coincidence," the Italian noted to reporters. "Defensively, the second half was a disaster.

"This is something I have to talk about in the locker room, but I will address it generally here. I think we need to change a little and remove the superficial attitude we sometimes have on the field.

"A team of this quality should not risk losing the match when we are 3-0 up. To think that the match is finished at 3-0 is a big mistake. This is not football.

"It has happened twice and I am sure it will not happen again."

The capital outfit stay within six points of Liga leaders Barcelona but have already conceded 16 goals after only 12 games.

Rodgers: Liverpool 'in with a shout' of top-four finish

    335959_heroa.jpg

Brendan Rodgers still believes his Liverpool side can finish in the top four of the Premier League this season in spite of Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Arsenal.

The Reds missed the chance to overtake the Gunners at the top of the Premier League on Saturday, as goals from midfielders Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey inspired Arsene Wenger's side to victory.

The Anfield outfit had been mentioned as title contenders following a strong start to the season, but Rodgers' ambitions are more conservative.

"I think what we can see is that my players have been brilliant in this opening period," he told Sky Sports.

"I think we're going to be in with a shout. We'll be in with a fighting chance of that top four and that's what we're aiming to do."

Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho both had chances to mount a comeback at the Emirates Stadium, but Rodgers did not believe his side deserved anything from the game.

He added: "I thought that the best team won; they had a greater control of the game. We still had chances.

"Their mobility and passing was better than ours; we could have done better with the two goals. We're disappointed: we never pressed the ball well enough; we were never tight enough.

"We kept going all night; the players have been brilliant in their application of the game. We created chances but just couldn't put the ball in the net."

Hart needed a rest, insists Pellegrini

    335957_heroa.jpg

Manuel Pellegrini insists Joe Hart's omission from the first team is not permanent, claiming the goalkeeper was in need of a rest.

The England international was dropped from the Manchester City starting line-up in favour of Costel Pantilimon for the 7-0 demolition of Norwich City on Saturday following a series of errors for both club and country.

However, Pellegrini feels Hart needed some time away from the starting XI, having been almost ever-present for the Etihad Stadium club in recent seasons, making 123 consecutive top flight appearances.

"My duty is to see every week who is the best player to play," the Chilean coach told reporters.

"Joe needed a rest, it will be useful for him – he's played every match for two years. Every player can have a bad moment.

"I only know that Joe must work very hard and he will have all of the support of me and the goalkeeper coach and the team. He is England’s goalkeeper and I think he will be back.

"I am sure he will return to his normal performance."

City next face CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Lille 2-0 Monaco: Inspired Enyeama helps hosts to victory

    336475hp2.jpg

Monaco were beaten for the first time since their return to Ligue 1 after going down 2-0 away to Lille at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

LOSC keeper Vincent Enyeama produced a sensational performance in goal for the hosts as he kept out Radamel Falcao and his team-mates time and again, with a double from Nolan Roux proving enough to secure the points for Rene Girard's men.

The result sees Rene Girard's men leapfrog their opponents in the table and sees them stake a claim as genuine contenders in the French title race.

Nolan Roux put the hosts in front midway through the first half when he kneed home from Marko Basa's knock down from after the central defender connected with Florent Belmont's corner.

Claudio Ranieri's side dominated for large chunks of proceedings but couldn't find a way past an inspired Enyeama in les Dogues' goal and Lille hit their opponents on the counter in the second period as Salomon Kalou and Rio Mavuba combined to set up Roux for his second to seal the victory.

The principality outfit continued to search for a way back into the game but an incredible late double-stop from Enyeama to deny Radamel Falcao and Emmanuel Riviere typified the visitors as they were condemned to their first league defeat of the season.

After the game, Riviere paid tribute to the Lille shot-stopper and admitted his side hadn't done enough to merit the points.

"It was a tough game and we had a bad first half," conceded the striker when he spoke to Canal+ after the full-time whistle.

"Respect to the goalkeeper who has made some fantastic saves in the second half. LOSC deserve their victory. We now need to keep our heads up and work harder."
