Netherlands 2-2 Japan: World Cup hopefuls share spoils in four-goal thriller

341257hp2.jpg

Japan staged a superb fightback to rescue a 2-2 friendly draw with the Netherlands in Belgium on Saturday.

Rafael van der Vaart put the Netherlands ahead after 12 minutes when Japan failed to clear their lines and Arjen Robben doubled the lead six minutes before half-time.

However, Alberto Zaccheroni's men responded well and were level after an hour following goals from Yuya Osako and Keisuke Honda.

The result extends the Netherlands' unbeaten record to 16 matches, while Japan have stopped the rot after back-to-back defeats.

Van der Vaart and Nigel de Jong were among five players brought into the Dutch starting XI following their final World Cup qualifier against Turkey, with striker Robin van Persie having withdrawn from the squad through toe and groin injuries earlier in the week.

Shinji Kagawa dropped to the bench in the most notable change for Japan from their 1-0 friendly defeat to Belarus in October.

Hotaru Yamaguchi blazed over the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area early on as Japan looked to gain an early advantage.

Yet it was the Netherlands who opened the scoring in the 12th minute as Van der Vaart capitalised on a dreadful Atsuto Uchida header to break clear of the Japanese defence and chip over goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa.

Jeremain Lens prodded just wide of the left post in the 23rd minute, drawing a last-ditch challenge from Uchida, before Robben forced a diving save from Nishikawa with an effort from 18 yards.

The Bayern Munich winger had better luck from similar range after 39 minutes as Robben curled in a wonderful left-footed strike to hand the Netherlands a comfortable lead.

However, Osako pulled one back for Japan a minute before half-time, slotting beyond Jasper Cillessen from the centre of the penalty area after some good work by Makoto Hasebe to set up the chance.

Yuto Nagatomo went close in the 55th minute as Japan dominated following the break, and they got their just reward five minutes later as Honda drove home an equaliser from inside the area following a scintillating passing move.

Kagawa almost put his side ahead in the 67th minute, but Cillessen tipped the Manchester United man's shot wide of his left-hand post.

There was a golden chance for Japan to cap a sensational comeback with 12 minutes remaining, but Yoichiro Kakitani slipped the ball narrowly wide after being put through on goal.

Cameroon 4-1 Tunisia (4-1 agg.): Indomitable Lions secure World Cup qualification

    341481hp2.jpg

Cameroon secured their place at the 2014 World Cup with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Tunisia on Sunday afternoon.

Volker Finke's men went into the game on the back of a 0-0 draw in the first leg in Rades last month, and knew that defeat would see them fail to qualify for only the second time since 1986.

However, the hosts were never really in danger as they produced a dominant performance to become the third African nation to reach the 2014 finals in Brazil.

Fenerbahce striker Pierre Webo opened the scoring after four minutes with a cool finish from close range.

Benjamin Moukandjo doubled Cameroon's advantage with a fine individual goal, but the home fans were given a scare when Ahmed Akaichi pulled one back for Tunisia shortly after half-time.

However, the tie was settled by Jean Makoun, who scored a second-half brace to spark jubilant scenes at the Stade Omnisport Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaounde.

Cameroon made three changes from the first leg, with Tottenham defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Nancy attacker Moukandjo among those to come in.

Fakhreddine Ben Youssef replaced Sami Allagui in attack for Ruud Krol's visitors, while defender Karim Haggui came in for Alaeddine Yahia.

It did not take the hosts long to open the scoring, Webo capitalising on some sloppy Tunisian defence with a clinical finish across Moez Ben Cherifa.

Cameroon continued to push forward in a bid to kill the tie off, and came close to doubling their lead 10 minutes later when Ben Cherifa was forced into a fine save to deny Assou-Ekotto from long range.

Finke's side were rewarded for their positivity on the half-hour mark as Moukandjo weaved past several Tunisia defenders before firing a low shot beyond Ben Cherifa to put Cameroon in command.

The visitors should have pulled one back shortly before the break, but Syam Ben Youssef headed over from point-blank range.

Tunisia did put themselves firmly back in the tie six minutes into the second half, substitute Akaichi firing home on the half-volley after breaking through the Cameroon backline.

Krol's men began to dictate proceedings following their goal, and had a claim for a penalty turned down on the hour mark after Assou-Ekotto's clumsy challenge on Fakhreddine Ben Youssef.

Just six minutes later Assou-Ekotto proved to be the creator for the goal that all but ensured Cameroon's place in the finals, Makoun heading in a pinpoint near-post corner to delight the home fans.

Moukandjo was denied his second by Ben Cherifa, but Makoun put the gloss on a superb display four minutes from time as he slotted into an empty net after Maxim Choupo-Moting had hit the post.

'Neymar is as good as Messi & Ronaldo' - Scolari

    341367_heroa.jpg

Luiz Felipe Scolari has expressed his belief that Neymar has already proved himself to be on a par with the world’s best players.

The 21-year-old made the move from Santos to Barcelona this summer and has began to find his feet in La Liga, netting four times in 11 appearances for the Blaugrana since his arrival.

His record at international level is more impressive, with the forward having netted 27 times in 44 appearances for Selecao, and it is his performances for Scolari’s side that have led to his coach singing his praises.

Jose Mourinho recently described the Barcelona star as "sad" for his role in Scott Brown's sending off in the recent Champions League game with Celtic, prompting the ex-Chelsea boss to defend his forward.

“Maybe he [Mourinho] knows that Neymar is now at the same level as Cristiano and Messi and can really hurt his team," Scolari told The Guardian.

Neymar and his team-mates showcased their talents at the weekend, sweeping aside Honduras 5-0 as they continued their preparations for the World Cup as host nation next summer.

Scolari knows that there is a certain pressure that comes with the finals being played on home soil, but the 65-year-old is confident his side can deliver in their own back yard.

“The players know they will have to win the World Cup,” the fomer Chelsea boss continued.

“If we are not good enough we will lose but if we work hard, as we have been doing in the last months, I can see us challenging for the title.”

Brazil’s national coach is aware that there a number of teams capable of gate-crashing the carnival in 2014, and that, while there is one obvious challenger to the title, a few are capable of causing a stir in South America.

“As the current European and world champions, Spain have to be considered the best in the world," he said.

“I am also impressed by Germany and Argentina. It’s an open field for the World Cup.”

Brazil have already shown they are capable of beating the best there is, highlighted by their dominance in the dress-rehearsal for 2014, at this year’s Confederations Cup and their dismantling of Vicente del Bosque’s Spain in the final.

Hazard: De Bruyne should leave Chelsea

    330107_heroa.jpg

Eden Hazard believes Chelsea and Belgium team-mate Kevin De Bruyne should leave the club if he wants to play regularly and enjoy a successful World Cup.

Both players featured in Belgium's 2-0 defeat against Colombia on Thursday, but De Bruyne has found first-team appearances at Chelsea hard to come by.

Belgium coach Mark Wilmots recently suggested a move away from Stamford Bridge could prove beneficial, and Hazard has echoed those sentiments.

"If he does not play, it is better for him to leave," Hazard told Het Nieuwsblad. "Playing a World Cup after having not played for a year... is very difficult.

"If we want to get the best from Kevin in the future it is better that he leaves. But he's a big boy. He must make his own choices."

As for Belgium's World Cup hopes, Hazard is eager for his team to take things one step at a time in Brazil.

However, he also feels Belgium need not be afraid of anyone when they feature in the premier international tournament for the first time since 2002.

"The first aim must be to survive the first round because we still do not know the draw but we should not be afraid of anyone because we have a very good team," he continued.

"We have no one who has already played in a tournament. The people might expect too much from Belgium."

Bale a target for 'bullies' - Coleman

    341299_heroa.jpg

Chris Coleman has warned Gareth Bale that he is now a target for tough-tackling opponents – if he wasn’t already earmarked by the majority of them.

Bale started for Wales as they drew 1-1 with Finland at the Cardiff City Stadium, and the Real Madrid star was treated to some tasty challenges from the visitors.

Bale became the world’s most expensive player over the summer and while he may have been a well-known adversary to Premier League sides while at Tottenham, his move to the Spanish capital has alerted the world to the 24-year-old’s incredible ability – something that Coleman believes will bring new challenges to the winger’s game.

“Gareth will have to get used to that,” the Wales boss told reporters after the game when questioned about the roughing up of his star player.

“He is going to get kicked, pushed and bullied but he has got to get used to that.

"He has been propelled onto another level. But he has the character to deal with it. He hasn't got a choice as he is such a good and dangerous player.”

Bale was not the only Liga superstar to be given the special treatment during the international break, with Barcelona forward Neymar taking to Instagram to show-off the marks left on him after several bruising encounters against Honduras while on duty with Brazil.

Coleman insists that Bale can’t let similar experiences hamper his game, suggesting that he has to take the constant fouling as a compliment.

"He knows before he walks onto the pitch that in the 90 minutes there will be someone who wants to leave something on him, but he has got to take that as a compliment as well," he said. "I am sure he does, although it may be a painful compliment.”

In the absence of Bale, Aaron Ramsey has been carrying the torch for Welsh football in the Premier League this season, and although the Arsenal midfielder missed out on Saturday, Coleman also stated that he needs both men fit if his side are to pose a real threat on the international stage.

“We need Bale and Ramsey. If we are to mount a challenge we need them for most, if not all, the games," he continued.

“When I was playing we had Ian Rush, Mark Hughes, Ryan Giggs and Neville Southall. We all knew they were world class. If we had them, we had half a chance. And we have got two here now.”

Wales missed out for qualification for next year’s World Cup by a good distance, and a vast improvement will be needed all-round if Bale is to avoid becoming yet another great who never graced a major finals.

Giroud: France ready to die for World Cup place

    341141_heroa.jpg

France striker Olivier Giroud says his team are "ready to die" to ensure they qualify for the 2014 World Cup.

Les Bleus are in a precarious position in their two-legged play-off fixture against Ukraine after losing 2-0 in Kiev on Friday.

Defender Laurent Koscielny was sent off in that defeat, making France's task tougher as he will be suspended for Tuesday's clash in Paris, but Giroud is confident his team can produce a stunning turnaround.

"We are ready to die on the field to get there," he told reporters.

"We want to show the French people and to ourselves that we are proud to represent France. We want to make proud all the people who love us and support us.

"I am offended [with the first-leg display]. I want to redeem myself. Like all my team-mates, I guess.

"They will give us exactly the same treatment on Tuesday. We won't be surprised. They are going to hit us hard.

"We want to do better, to make history. It is a matter of pride. We'll do it, I firmly believe. Today, I still can't grasp the idea of France not going to Brazil."

Giroud – who has scored eight goals in 18 appearances for Arsenal this season – has not enjoyed as much success with the national team.

But he is ready to up his game on an occasion that he acknowledges will be difficult.

"We must find the right balance, to continue to play our game," he added.

"This is not easy because there will be a lot of tension, a lot of stress. This is the game of the year."

Pjanic: I won't leave Roma in January

    330451_heroa.jpg

Miralem Pjanic has shrugged off recent transfer speculation linking him with a move away from Roma insisting he is committed to the club.

The Bosnian midfielder has become an integral part of the Giallorossi since his arrival from Lyon in the summer of 2011, particularly under the guidance of Rudi Garcia this season.

Pjanic, who has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs (Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham) and Russian side Zenit, says he is happy at the Serie A league leaders but could move on sometime in the future.

“I won’t exclude the possibility of one day playing elsewhere, but I doubt this will happen soon,” he told reporters.

“It certainly won’t be in January, which is what some people have said, and certainly not in the next year and a half.”

With his contract expiring in June 2015, Pjanic will be able to discuss a pre-contract agreement with clubs in a little over a year’s time, but according to reports in Italy, Roma are understood to have begun discussions to extend the midfielder's stay.

The 23-year-old has started all 12 of the club’s Serie A games, scoring three goals in the process, including a double against Napoli in a 2-0 victory.

Strootman on course to join Manchester United, says Advocaat

    306737_heroa.jpg

Dick Advocaat believes Kevin Strootman’s performances for Roma have put the midfielder on course for a move to Manchester United.

The 23-year-old was linked with a switch to Old Trafford before he joined the current Serie A leaders in July.

Advocaat, who managed Strootman at PSV last season, admits he was surprised that Europe’s elite clubs rejected the chance to sign the Netherlands international in the summer but feels another transfer may be close.

“Strootman is a pure professional,” Advocaat told Algemeen Dagblad.

“It frankly surprised me that he did not get to the absolute top last summer and was on the side a little.

“I do not think he will stay at Roma that long. If Kevin is at this level, he will be plucked away.

“And then it will be a team of the calibre of Manchester United.”

Buffon: Balotelli is not treated unfairly

    341136_heroa.jpg

Gianluigi Buffon does not believe that there is any prejudice from officials towards Mario Balotelli, insisting the striker is not a victim of refereeing decisions.

The Italy star felt aggrieved at the lack of protection afforded by referee Olegario Benquerenca in Friday's 1-1 draw with Germany, but Buffon has made it clear the AC Milan star must not consider himself harshly treated as officials attempt to keep the game moving.

"I see no prejudice against Mario," the 35-year-old told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"It's just that now the way games are refereed has changed to prevent them becoming bogged down. Referees tend to whistle less and let the play run more - and I agree with that."

Italy will not be among the top seeds when the draw for the World Cup group stages takes place on December 6, but Buffon believes the Azzurri proved they are a team to be feared with their display against Germany.

"We might not be the strongest but we can endure as much as anyone," the Juventus shot-stopper added.

"We've just drawn a type of game that others would lose. You will see the real Italy in Brazil - the problem will be for those who will have to deal with us, not the other way around."

Italy continue their preparations for Brazil 2014 with a friendly against Nigeria, who themselves have secured a World Cup berth, at Fulham's Craven Cottage on Monday.

Bartra pays tribute to Del Bosque following debut Spain win

    341409_heroa.jpg

Barcelona defender Marc Bartra paid tribute to Spain boss Vicente del Bosque for handing him his international debut in the 2-1 victory over Equatorial Guinea.

Goals from Santi Cazorla and Juanfran either side of a Jimmy Bermudez strike ensured Bartra enjoyed a victory on his first senior appearance for la Roja.

The 22-year-old, drafted into the squad following injuries to Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa, admitted he was surprised to make his debut so early in his career and thanked the coach for granting the opportunity to young players.

"I'm grateful to Del Bosque for having confidence in us and believing in the younger players. And I think that confidence gets results, which is the most important thing," he told reporters after the match.

"I'm delighted with my debut and we won. The atmosphere, my team-mates, starting, everything. It's like a dream come true and I think there will be many more times like this in the future.

"It's true that I always dreamed of playing for la Roja, but realistically I saw it in the future. I had a difficult time but I knew that with perseverance, good things would come and I needed to be prepared. And good things have come, that's why I'm happy."

Spain are now preparing for their friendly match against South Africa on November 19.

Mistakes against Germany could cost Hart his England place, warns Hodgson

    338416_heroa.jpg

England manager Roy Hodgson has warned Joe Hart risks losing his place in the national side if he makes any mistakes against Germany on Tuesday.

The Manchester City man is set to start for the Three Lions at Wembley after sitting out Friday’s 2-0 defeat to Chile with Fraser Forster preferred.

And while Hodgson has revealed Hart will be restored to the starting line-up for Tuesday’s clash, he insists the 26-year-old must make the most of his opportunity.

"All I can do is give Joe the shirt and give him the chance to go out and play," Hodgson told reporters.

"Afterwards he is going to have to face whatever he faces, but Joe is an experienced player – he understands that.

"If he plays well and does well, and keeps a clean sheet and helps us to win the game, then I'm sure people are going to be saying some very good things about him.

“But if he doesn't, and lets a couple of easy goals in, he's going to have to accept that there'll be criticism, because that's the way of the world we live in.

"I can't change things for players in that respect. We've had plenty of pats on the back recently, but we all know that, unfortunately, this game of football also gives you slaps in the face."

Hodgson also said Hart was well aware of his current predicament and feels he does not need to explain how important a good performance is.

"Any time any player pulls on an England shirt he is in for a tough mental test and a tough test of attitude," he said.

"As an experienced player, Joe knows the way of the world. He understands that if he loses his place in the Manchester City team, and is criticised for letting a couple of goals in, then what happens will happen.

"I don't need to take him aside and say: 'Joe, this is what happens in football.' I've got too much respect for him as a professional and as a man to do that.

"I always try to tell players things they haven't talked about, but I won't try and teach them to suck eggs."

Italy 2-2 Nigeria: Giaccherini spares Azzurri blushes

    341805hp2.jpg

Shola Ameobi scored one goal and set up another as Nigeria held Italy to a surprise 2-2 draw on Monday.

Stephen Keshi's men headed into the game having clinched their place at next year's World Cup with a play-off win over Ethiopia on Saturday.

And the African nation carried that momentum into the friendly clash at Craven Cottage, producing a determined performance against the four-time World Cup winners.

Italy were on top for much of the encounter and took the lead early on thanks to Giuseppe Rossi.

Nigeria launched a superb fightback, though, with Ameobi setting up Bright Dike for the equaliser before giving his side the advantage with a fine improvised volley.

Cesare Prandelli's side did level through Emanuele Giaccherini, but there were to be no further goals despite numerous opportunities for both teams.

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu replaced Gianluigi Buffon in goal for Italy, while Fiorentina striker Rossi was included up front as Prandelli made eight changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Germany on Friday.

Newcastle United forward Ameobi was among those recalled to Nigeria's line-up.

Nigeria had the better of the opening exchanges, but it was Italy who took the lead 12 minutes in, as Rossi converted with a delicate finish following great hold-up play from Mario Balotelli.

Sirigu producing a strong save to prevent Ogenyi Onazi's long-range effort from finding the net as Nigeria sought an immediate reply.

Italy dominated for the majority of the half, though, and had opportunities to double their lead, with Milan duo Ricardo Montolivo and Balotelli both spurning clear chances.

Despite Italy's dominance, Nigeria levelled things up 10 minutes before half-time when Dike rose highest to head home Ameobi's superb cross.

There was then a further shock for Italy five minutes later as Ameobi cleverly converted Francis Benjamin's near-post delivery to give his side an unlikely lead.

Balotelli came close to a stunning equaliser as half-time approached, controlling a deflected high cross in audacious fashion before testing Augustine Ejide with a vicious volley.

But Nigeria's lead lasted only two minutes into the second half. Rossi linked up well with Antonio Candreva before Giaccherini slotted under Edije.

Substitute Marco Parolo twice had the chance to put Italy in front for a second time, firstly blasting over from point-blank range after substitute goalkeeper Victor Enyeama had pulled off a fine stop from an Andrea Pirlo free-kick, and then seeing a deflected effort strike the post.

Balotelli and Nigeria substitute Emmanuel Emenike each squandered clear openings in the closing stages, but neither side could find a winner.

The closing stages provided particularly frantic fare as play switched from end to end, much to the delight of those in attendance.

Prandelli excited by Balotelli and Rossi partnership

    341530_heroa.jpg

Italy boss Cesare Prandelli admitted he is excited by the potential of the partnership between Giuseppe Rossi and Mario Balotelli after his side drew 2-2 with Nigeria.

The Fiorentina striker - making his return to the national team after two years out through injury - scored the opening goal of the game in the first half, but the Azzurri fell behind as quick-fire goals from Bright Dike and Shola Ameobi put the Super Eagles 2-1 up before half-time.

A 47th minute strike from Emanuele Giaccherini spared Italy's blushes and having opted to partner Rossi and Balotelli at Craven Cottage on Monday night, Prandelli was content with what he witnessed.

The 52-year-old said: "Rossi and Balotellicombined many times. The absolutely terrible mistake we made was that when 1-0 up we tried to hold possession in sterile fashion and we should’ve looked for the second goal.

“We found more width, found Alessandro Diamanti between the lines. We also did well at the start with four or five passes in a row to get towards the goal.
“The first Nigerian goal was absolutely a foul, but we take home this good performance.”

Scolari: We need to beat Chile

    341463_heroa.jpg

Brazil coach Luis Felipe Scolari is hoping his team can close out the year with a win over Chile.

The Selecao won the first match of their global tour 5-0 when they faced Honduras in Miami on Saturday, and will look to win their sixth match in a row when they take on Jorge Sampaoli’s men in Toronto on Tuesday.

Scolari has the team firing on all cylinders, and he wants to continue their winning ways in their last game of 2013.

“I didn’t expect the players to be as comfortable as they are right now,” he told reporters. “Today, I can say the team is complete.

“2013 is met with a positive evaluation from this group. But we have to beat Chile, one of the best opponents to play against this season, for it to end even better.

“We still have December, January, February before our next match.

“If we can close this one out with a win, we will have even more tranquility to think about these remaining months [before the WC].”

After Tuesday’s match, the focus switches to hosting next summer’s World Cup, as Brazil will look to improve on a quarter-final loss to the Netherlands in 2010.

“Now, as the year ends, we are looking forward to the World Cup. You can say Santa is coming late this time around, because we wished we could play right now.

“It was a profitable year. We started with Russia, England, France and Italy. Games that we used to build on our team strategy, and later sharpened during the Confederations Cup.”

Bayern should leave the Bundesliga, says Magath

    167918_heroa.jpg

Felix Magath believes Bayern Munich should quit the Bundesliga as a result of their dominance in Germany's top flight.

The Bavarians won the treble last season and have now amassed 22 league titles, with only Borussia Dortmund realistic rivals to their league crown.

Magath has coached eight different teams in the Bundesliga, including die Roten, and suggested the creation of a super league containing Europe’s best teams could be a solution.

“You would have to exclude them from the domestic competition - a Europe League would be more telling,” the 60-year-old told Hamburger Morgenpost.

“I see the league as a competition where first place is permanently assigned to Bayern Munich.

“The clubs that play constantly in the Champions League have huge advantages.”

Magath is not currently coaching after leaving Wolfsburg in October 2012, but admits he would consider a return under the right circumstances.

“If somewhere there is a situation in which there is a club I am attracted helping, and its managers see it as well, then I’m willing to leave my family in Munich.”

Roberto Martinez: Barkley plays like a Brazilian

Everton manager Roberto Martinez argues that 19-year-old midfielder Ross Barkley has a case to be the most talented player in Great Britain, with flair not unlike a Brazil or Netherlands star.

The former Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday loanee is included in the England squad after an electric start to the season and is set to play a part in Tuesday's friendly with Germany.

Since taking over from David Moyes in the summer, the Spaniard has been impressed with Barkley, starting the attacking midfielder in all but two of the Toffees' opening 11 Premier League fixtures.

"Ross is a really talented footballer. As a British player he is as talented as anyone you see," Martinez told talkSPORT.

"The balance he has with both feet is brilliant and technically he's really gifted. You would see that technical ability with any Brazilian or Dutch player.

"He's a young man, though, and we need to allow him to fight through the normal process, which is gaining his first-team place and making sure he enjoys his football. At the moment he is doing that.

"I've been impressed with Ross's personality and character - he's such a humble boy, all he wants to do is listen and play. It's such a simple case with him.

"Nothing will faze him on a football pitch and, if you have a talent like his, it's an incredible combination."
