'Dortmund second best in Europe behind Bayern'

    343168_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich's main rivals in the Champions League are Borussia Dortmund, according to Bavarians chief Paul Breitner.

The Schwarzgelben were thrashed 3-0 by the Roten last weekend to leave their Bundesliga hopes bruised but recovered with a midweek win over Napoli, which leaves them in a healthy position to reach the last 16 in the top European cup.

Although the World Cup winner acknowledged the threat posed by Real Madrid and Barcelona, Breitner believes last season's runners-up in the Champions League are the greatest enemies to Bayern's continental crown when they are without injuries.

"We are the clear favourites," the Germany legend told AZ. "Then come Madrid, Barcelona and Dortmund.

"That, to me, is the current order in world football, so the starting position for where we stand in 2014.

"In normal circumstances, for me Dortmund are absolutely the clear second best in Europe! When all of their players are fit, they are at the pinnacle of the game."

Although Breitner retained reverence for treble-winning Jupp Heynckes, who was replaced as head coach in the summer, the 1972 European Championship victor thinks that the influence of Pep Guardiola has taken the Bavarians' quality up a level.

"Heynckes developed our play very much but now our game is even more unpredictable and varied," the German continued. "I merit that to Guardiola."

Bayern's next game is at home to Eintracht Braunschweig on Saturday, which kick-off at 15:30CET.

Moyes: Man Utd won't panic in January

    339573_heroa.jpg

David Moyes says Manchester United will be pragmatic in the January transfer window, insisting they will not panic buy.

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a move for Everton left-back Leighton Baines, while there have been reports of bids for Andres Iniesta, Miralem Pjanic and Marco Reus as the club look to bolster their midfield.

However, Moyes is adamant United would only make a move in January if they felt a player was right for the club and fit a certain profile.

When asked if the club would conduct any business in January, Moyes told reporters: "Only if the right players are available and they fit into exactly what we want.

"We would like to but as always there is never any guarantee. If they’re [Everton] determined to hold on to [Baines] then he won’t be going anywhere and it’s worthless asking any questions."

Ryan Giggs turned 40 on Friday and Moyes had positive words for the Welshman. Asked where Giggs ranks in a list of Premier League greats, Moyes added: "Undoubtedly at the top because of his longevity.

"He’s played for one club, the amount of games, what he’s done in Europe, what he’s done in the Premier League. Every season you can look at Ryan Giggs moments.

"What he’s done is terrific, he’s an example to young players, how you should dedicate yourself throughout your career, and also to players in their mid-30s who think they’re coming to the end, but if you look after yourself and train well you can go on for longer."

Moyes also revealed that talks over a new contract would be delayed until nearer the end of this campaign.

"I think when you get to that stage I think it’s late decisions at the end of the season," he said. "It’s how you feel, what your body is telling you."

No Giggs contract talks until the summer - Moyes

    344930_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager David Moyes insists Ryan Giggs will need to wait until the end of the season to discuss a new deal at the club.

The midfielder, who celebrated his 40th birthday on Friday, has taken on a coaching role under Moyes, but his future as a player beyond this season remains unclear.

And Moyes believes the player's age means any decision over a potential new deal should not be made on a whim.

"When you get to his age, any decision about carrying on is left until the end of the season," the Scot told reporters. "Don't forget, he's on the coaching staff anyway, but if he feels he wants to continue next season I'll be more than happy with that.
"Ryan is undoubtedly at the top of any list of Premier League legends, for all sorts of reasons.

"Because of his longevity, playing his entire career at a club like Manchester United, the amount of games he has played in Europe and the Premier League and the fact that he has provided so many outstanding memories every single season.

"It is terrific to be doing it at his age, and it is an example to young players everywhere to see how far you can go with the right dedication.

"It is also an example to players in their mid-30s, who may be wondering whether they are coming to the end of the road, to see that if you keep training well and looking after yourself, you can carry on longer."

Moyes also revealed the squad had bought Giggs a number of gifts to mark the occasion.

"There were a few surprises for him in the dressing room to mark his birthday," he said. "A coach's watch was one, so maybe they are trying to send him a message.
"I think he was beginning to think they were pushing him out of the dressing room.
"They're very good. He's respected by everyone in the dressing-room because of what he's done and what he's achieved in football."

Manchester United take on Tottenham in the Premier League at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Vidal: I want to stay at Juventus

    344668_heroa.jpg

Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal has revealed he is ready to sign a new contract with the club and says there is no chance of him leaving Turin.

The Chile international scored a hat-trick on Wednesday night as the Bianconeri ran out 3-1 winners over FC Copenhagen to keep their hopes of qualification to the knockout stages of the Champions League intact.

Vidal has been linked with several of Europe's biggest clubs in recent times, on the back of his rise to prominence with Juve, but with the January transfer window looming on the horizon he insists moving is the last thing on his mind.

"I am happy at Juventus and I want to stay here. I'm ready to sign [a new deal]," he told reporters. "The beginning of next week should be a good time to announce my new contract."

Having scored the first hat-trick of his career in midweek, the 26-year-old also admitted the number of goals he has scored for Juve - he now has 10 in 18 games this season - has come as a surprise.

"I never expected to be able to score so many," the former Bayer Leverkusen man continued. "I remember when I first arrived at Juventus, Antonio Conte spoke to me about a new way of playing and it's worked well for me."

Vidal joined Juve from Leverkusen in the summer of 2011 for a reported €10.5 million, with his current deal set to expire in June 2016.

Bale: Real Madrid the best in the world

    334745_heroa.jpg

Gareth Bale feels Real Madrid are the biggest club in the world and is determined to win plenty of silverware with the Santiago Bernabeu side in the years to come.

The Welshman joined Los Blancos from Tottenham in the summer transfer window for a world-record €100 million transfer fee and he has stressed that he has no regrets over the move.

"In my opinion, Real Madrid are the best team in the world. We have the best players and the best stadium, and everything about the club is perfect," Bale told his club's official website.

"I want to win a lot of things and this is the best team you can be in. I hope I can spend a lot of time with this team, win a lot of titles and show everyone that we are a great club that always plays to win.

"I want to help the team, do my best on the pitch and, above all, win titles and trophies, which is the objective shared by of all of us here.

"I am very happy about everything; it has all turned out very well and I hope that everything will carry on like this."

The 24-year-old attacker then went on to praise Cristiano Ronaldo, claiming that the Portugal star is in a league of his own.

"In my view, Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in the world," Bale stated, "This season he is showing what a great player he is, and he does it under pressure, like he did against Sweden [in the World Cup play-offs].

"He is the best by a long way and he shows it in every match."

Bale has scored six times in his 12 appearances in all competitions for Madrid this season.

Giggs: If I had left Manchester United I would be finished by now

Ryan Giggs says he would not still be playing football if he had left Manchester United, as he celebrates his 40th birthday.

The Welshman made his debut for the Red Devils as a 17-year-old against Everton in 1991 and has gone on to make 953 appearances for United.
Giggs was in action again on Wednesday, impressing as United routed Bayer Leverkusen 5-0 in the Champions League and says staying at Old Trafford has been key to his longevity.

"If I’d moved from club to club I’d be finished by now," he told the North Wales Daily Post.

"I’m lucky that I have been at one club, where I am surrounded by good players. I also have a good manager.

"I look after myself and try to train every day in order to make myself available for selection. I enjoy it as much as I can and, of course, try to contribute to the team."

The 40-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, but says he is still keen to continue playing and is not yet thinking of retirement.

"It can be hard sometimes but I am still enjoying it. As long as that is the case I will carry on,” he added.

"I don’t know what the younger lads think of me. When I was 17 and 18 I thought 31 was ancient. Here I am at 40.

"It is a pleasure to play alongside someone like Phil Jones. He does my running for me. All I do is try and control it all."

Mourinho: Chelsea will not buy a striker in January

    344293_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho has dismissed reports linking Chelsea with Porto hitman Jackson Martinez, and insisted the Blues will not buy any striker in January.

Rumours originating in Portugal and picked up in England suggested that Martinez's agent was in London earlier this week to hold talks about a move to Stamford Bridge.

But Mourinho has refuted the notion, and went on to say that there were no plans to improve the club's front line despite recent injuries to Fernando Torres and Samuel Eto'o.

"The Porto striker? What I read a couple of days ago that his agent was meeting me in London is not true," he told the press.

"In the January market we won't buy any striker, we'll go to the end of the season with Fernando, Samuel and Demba Ba."

Mourinho also hit out at Romelu Lukaku, on loan at Everton from Chelsea, after the striker had claimed he has had no contact with Mourinho.

"Romelu likes to speak," he continued. "The only thing he didn't say is why he went to Everton on loan.

"The last thing I said to him was, 'Why do you never say why you are not here [at Chelsea]?' It is something he should think about, why he is not with us."

The manager also confirmed that Eto'o and David Luiz will miss Sunday's match against Southampton at Stamford Bridge.

AC Milan CEO Galliani to stand down next month

    345265_heroa.jpg

Adriano Galliani has announced that he plans to stand down as AC Milan CEO after the Serie A side's final Champions League group game, at home to Ajax on December 11.

The 69-year-old had come under fire in recent months following the Rossoneri's disappointing start to the season and a number of reports had already suggested that he was ready to throw in the towel after falling out with board member Barbara Berlusconi, daughter of club owner Silvio.

Galliani has now confirmed that he will indeed resign, although he has voiced his frustration with the way things have gone in the past few weeks.

"I will resign in the next few days, probably after the match against Ajax," Galliani told reporters on Friday. "I will leave the club either with or without compensation.

"I understand that there comes a moment where it's time for change, but not like this. My reputation has been damaged. This should have been treated a bit more delicately.

"I don't know yet how my future will look like. I will take some time off first and then I will make a decision."

Galliani had been Milan CEO ever since 1986 and saw the San Siro giants win five European Cups during his tenure, as well as eight Serie A titles.

Giggs: Manchester United apprenticeship toughened me up

Ryan Giggs believes a tough apprenticeship at Manchester United helped make him the player he is today.

The Welshman, who turned 40 on Friday, is the Premier League's most decorated player and was a member of the fabled Old Trafford 'Class of '92', which also produced players such as David Beckham and Gary Neville.

But Giggs - the fourth oldest player in Premier League history - believes that times have changed since he was coming through the academy system as a young player.

"I think if you asked most players of my era, that is something they would like to see come back," he told the Daily Mail. "It gave you discipline, that sort of ethos of working hard and the desire to be a success.

"You worked hard to make the most of yourself.

"The Cliff [former United training ground] is crawling with history. We would get there at 8am, stay until 5pm or 6pm.

"You'd train morning and afternoon; then you would do your jobs, pumping balls up, cleaning dressing rooms, polishing boots or whatever.

"All those things have gone: like sweeping the dressing room and making sure the boots were done. If they weren't, you got told.

"The aim was to get into the first-team dressing room. We had a lot of fiery characters - [Peter] Schmeichel, [Paul] Ince, [Roy] Keane. They would let you know if you let them down.

"But they always pulled in the right direction, doing things for the right reason.

"It was a tough school but it was one you knew if you got through it, you could face anything. You didn’t forget what you learned there."

Giggs, who made his debut in 1991, has no plans to celebrate his birthday too much, as he settles into his new role at Old Trafford.

The former wing wizard was promoted to the club's coaching staff following the arrival of new boss David Moyes in the close-season, and he says it is an experience he is relishing.

"I'm sure I will get a bit of stick off the lads [on his birthday]. I tried to keep it quiet but that has been impossible," he continued. "Am I dreading it? I’ve just got to attack it, haven't I? I can't worry about it too much.

"Nothing has changed for me. I still enjoy it. I still enjoy training. As soon as that stops, I will finish. It will be as simple as that.

"Obviously the change with Sir Alex [Ferguson] going was massive, but I am enjoying it. I am enjoying the coaching role. David is a great manager and a great coach.

"This is a landmark birthday but it’s not something I will dwell upon. There won’t be any mad celebrations. I am always someone who tries to look forward."

Robben: Bayern not taking anything for granted

    345189_heroa.jpg

Arjen Robben has insisted that Bayern Munich will not be taking anything for granted ahead of this weekend's Bundesliga match against lowly Eintracht Braunschweig.

The Bavarians have been in superb form so far this season, winning 11 out of their 13 domestic assignments to date, as well as all five of their Champions League group games thus far to set a new record of 10 consecutive victories in the competition.

However, Robben says Bayern cannot afford to get carried away, arguing that if they start buying into their own hype that they could easily come unstuck against Braunschweig, who currently prop up the Bundesliga.

"We respect each and every opponent and I've often seen in my career that when top plays bottom, strange things can happen," Robben told reporters.

"That's why everyone should concentrate on their performance, we have to be fully focused and it won't be easy.

"You should never take anything for granted in games like these."

Robben has been a key figure for Bayern in 2013-14, scoring 10 goals in 18 appearances in all competitions.

Inter have the best attack in Italy - Palacio

    336234_heroa.jpg

Inter forward Rodrigo Palacio has branded his side's strikeforce the very best in Italy.

There have been rumours that new Nerazzurri owner Erick Thohir is keen to bolster Walter Mazzarri's attacking options, with the club chief himself confirming that he and the coach are set to have talks ahead of the January transfer window.

The Milan-based club sit fourth in Serie A but they have scored more goals than any of the 19 other teams, and Palacio believes that Inter have suggested that the current attackers can handle the pressure without extra players added in 2014.

"I do not ask about anything [transfer related] - these are decisions for the coach and the club," the 31-year-old told Sky Sport 24.

"Certainly we are strong up front, though, and it is not a problem. I'd say that currently we have the best attack in Serie A."

Scudetto holders Juventus sit top of Serie A, with Roma and Napoli not far behind them, but the Argentine attacker is certain that Inter can propel themselves up the table from fourth if they stick with their current mindset.

"We are not thinking about the standings right now, we're taking things game-by-game," Palacio added. "But, if we continue in this manner, we can reach the top of the table."

Inter host Sampdoria at San Siro on Sunday, with kick-off at 15:00CET.
