'Milan played anti-football' - De Boer

    349739_heroa.jpg

Ajax boss Frank de Boer has slammed AC Milan for playing "anti-football" after a 0-0 draw saw his side knocked out of the Champions League on Wednesday.

Riccardo Montolivo was sent off for a terrible challenge on Christian Poulsen midway through the first half at San Siro but a valiant defensive effort saw the Rossoneri clinch second spot in Group H and scrape through to the last-16.

De Boer told NOS: "Uefa always talks about respect, but if even the ballboys don't provide us the balls if we're in a hurry. They stalled the match for 20 minutes, but there was only five minutes extra-time. It's a disgrace.

"It was rather difficult after the red card. We had to search how to play. We needed a bit of luck, but we didn't get it. We had some chances, but unfortunately anti-football won today.

"Milan played their game with 10 men with their back against their own box. I'm proud of the boys and how they fought. It just felt like we played in a theatre tonight, what with all these tricks of Milan's.

"It's experienced by Milan, but the ref allowed it. The fact that he gave red had nothing to do with it. A red card is a red card. [Mario] Balotelli should have gotten red as well after he kicked Daley Blind. He didn't have any intention to play the ball.

"At these moments, the ref let the game slip out of his hands. The Milan goalkeeper took a minute for every goal kick. We were twice as good as Milan. It's something positive, but at this point it's dissapointing."

Ajax's third-place finish in Group H sees them drop into the Europa League.

Klopp: It was like Malaga again

    348278_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp says his side's dramatic 2-1 win over Marseille reminded him of their 3-2 victory against Malaga last term.

Back in April, BVB scored two stoppage-time goals to defeat the Andalusians on home soil and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.

They also left it late at the Stade Velodrome on Wednesday, with Kevin Grosskreutz's 87th-minute strike sending them into the knockout stages.

When asked by Sky Deutschland if the result was reminiscent of the Malaga game, Klopp replied: "Yes, totally.

"It would have been a bit cooler at home. We did lots of things right and yet were almost out. We created many, many chances and could not convert them.

"At the end it had to be a strange shot from Grosskreutz. This feels super! We have many problems, we fought hard and was an intense match."

BVB missed an extraordinary number of chances throughout the match but the 46-year-old says he always remained patient.

"We had so many chances. The guys gave it their all and were toally focused. You don't scream at them, you just tell them quietly what they need to improve."

Club captain Sebastian Kehl has already claimed that the team will celebrate with a beer at the hotel and Klopp has insisted that his side will not be excessive.

"There will be happy hour at the hotel," he added. "Don't get me wrong, they won't get drunk. But they don't have to pay."

Neymar hat-trick fourth fastest in Champions League history

    349754_heroa.jpg

Neymar netted his first hat-trick for Barcelona on Wednesday in the Catalans' 6-1 win at home to Celtic and the fourth fastest in Champions League history.

With Lionel Messi still sidelined through injury and Cesc Fabregas suspended, Neymar started in a central role for the Blaugrana and was a constant threat for the Spanish champions.

The Brazilian, who had failed to net in his previous five Champions League appearances, set up Pedro for the second goal before hitting a 13-minute hat-trick either side of the interval as the Catalans ran out comfortable winners at Camp Nou.

The 21-year-old was left all alone to tap home his first following a wonderful team move and waltzed through the Scots' back line for his superb second.

And he completed his hat-trick in brilliant fashion by nut-megging Efe Ambrose before slotting home to become the fourth-fastest scorer of a Champions League hat-trick (some five minutes slower than Lyon's Batefimbi Gomis against Dinamo Zagreb in December, 2011).

Barca's win sees them top Group H ahead of Monday's last-16 draw.

Napoli 2-0 Arsenal: 10-man Gunners go through despite two-goal defeat

    349774hp2.jpg

Two late goals for Napoli proved to be in vain as they crashed out of the Champions League despite a 2-0 victory over 10-man Arsenal.

Needing to win by three goals to definitely go through, it took until the 73rd minute for the Italians to get on the scoresheet, Gonzalo Higuain hitting a shot on the turn from around 18 yards to send the home fans into raptures, before Mikel Arteta saw red for a second bookable offence.

But news from Marseille was met with cries of despair from the stands, with Kevin Grosskreutz firing Borussia Dortmund to a last-gasp 2-1 victory and sending the Germans through as winners of Group F.Jose Callejon added a second for Napoli at the death, but it was too little too late for the Serie A club.

Arsenal go through as runners-up and have now qualified from the group stages for 14 consecutive seasons.

Pepe Reina once again missed out for the hosts, but was fit enough for a place among the substitutes, while Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere dropped to the Arsenal bench in favour of Tomas Rosicky and Mathieu Flamini as Arsene Wenger made two alterations to the side that were held 1-1 by Everton on Sunday.

Napoli applied the early pressure, Goran Pandev forcing Wojciech Szczesny into a save from a tight angle in the ninth minute after receiving the ball from a Dries Mertens cross.

Wenger’s men weathered the early storm and Olivier Giroud finally posed a threat at the other end of the pitch in the 23rd minute, with stand-in keeper Rafael Cabral punching away his effort from the left-hand side of the penalty area.

Christian Maggio then found some space down the right seven minutes before the break, but chipped over with Szczesny advancing, before the Pole’s blushes were saved as Higuain nodded wide from a dreadful attempted clearance.Mesut Ozil unleashed a shot from distance four minutes into the second period, but saw it bounce well wide of the left-hand post.

Pablo Armero was denied by Szczesny at close range, Callejon dragged a shot wide and Higuain blazed over as Napoli reacted to a raucous home support.

But Higuain, who was linked with a move to Arsenal in the close season, appeared to have sent Napoli through in the 74th minute, turning superbly just inside the penalty area and sending a left-footed effort beyond Szczesny for his first goal against English opposition in the Champions League.

And Napoli received a boost just a couple of minutes later, as Arteta was given his marching orders for a second yellow card, before Callejon chipped a second from close range in stoppage time.

But it left the hosts one goal short of qualification as they became the first club to rack up 12 points but not go through to the last 16, while Arsenal could face the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain after finishing second in the group.

Too early for Newcastle top-four talk, insists Cabaye

    348065_heroa.jpg

Yohan Cabaye feels Newcastle's form in December will determine whether reaching the Champions League is a realistic aim.

The midfielder scored the only goal as Newcastle beat Manchester United at Old Trafford for the first time in 41 years last weekend.

Alan Pardew's men have won five of their last six games and are only three points adrift of the Champions League places ahead of the visit of Southampton on Saturday.

Newcastle finished fifth in the 2011-12 campaign but, although Cabaye accepts their form has been markedly similar this season, the France international believes the true test is still to come.

"There are similarities to two years ago, but it is too early to start getting carried away," Cabaye told The Journal.

"Five wins out of the last six matches is a very good record, and hopefully at the end, we will have the same finish as we did two years ago."We can't afford to think about the future too much at this stage.

"People might start talking about qualifying for Europe, or even the Champions League, but we can't afford to think like that. The Christmas period is coming, and that is always an important period."If we are in the same position as now in the middle of January, then why not starting to look further forward? But we have to get there first.

"There are going to be a lot of games in the next month, and we will have to focus on our recovery between matches.

"We need to keep all the players as fit as we can, because that will help us play to our best, and that is the only way we can stay close to the top of the league."

    Tottenham to fast-track Vertonghen recovery

    349635_heroa.jpg

Andre Villas-Boas has revealed Tottenham will look to fast-track Jan Vertonghen's recovery from an ankle injury.

The defender, who missed Tottenham's 2-1 Premier League victory at Sunderland on Saturday with the ligament issue, is expected to be sidelined until the New Year. However, head coach Villas-Boas claimed the club would employ a blood-spinning technique to avoid Vertonghen requiring surgery.

"At the moment there is ankle ligament damage," he said. "We will have the player in a boot for one or two weeks to try and settle it.

"We want to - and we will - avoid surgery on the player."We will use PRP treatment to try and get him back as soon as possible.

"We've had outstanding results with PRP treatment and we will do that with him."
Villas-Boas also vowed to maintain his rotation policy as Tottenham take on Anzhi Makhachkala in their final Europa League group-stage clash on Thursday.

"We've made a lot of changes in the Europa League fixtures so far so we will keep that," he continued. "Giving opportunities to players in this competition [on Thursday] will put them in contention for the game against Liverpool [on Sunday].
"We will use, as much as we can, the possibility of rotating the players, giving others a rest, bearing in mind we are qualified first."

Tottenham have already made it through to the knockout stages of the competition having won all five of their Group K fixtures so far.

Ribery 'sad' at Ibrahimovic Ballon d'Or snub

    349140_heroa.jpg

Franck Ribery admits he is "a little bit sad" to see Zlatan Ibrahimovic miss out on chance to win the 2013 Ballon d'Or.

The 30-year-old will battle it out with holder Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for the prize following his exceptional season for treble-winning Bayern Munich.

Despite his delight to have made it into the final three for the award, Ribery feels Ibrahimovic can count himself unlucky to have missed out following a superb year for Sweden and Paris Saint-Germain.

"I'm happy. Happy for myself, for the club, and for my whole family," he told FIFA.com.

"But I am a little bit sad for Ibrahimovic because he's still a great player and has done great things at Paris Saint-Germain."

The Bayern star also reflected on his side's shock 3-2 defeat at home to Manchester City on Tuesday evening, admitting the Champions League holders became complacent at 2-0.

"We played well in the first 20 minutes, we pressed well and we were aggressive. But maybe after that we thought it was too easy," he added.

"We have to correct that quickly and it starts with Hamburg on Saturday in the Bundesliga."

Baines eyes festive return for Everton

    349590_heroa.jpg

Leighton Baines is hopeful of making his Everton comeback in time for the busy festive period. The left-back suffered a fractured toe in the Merseyside derby against Liverpool on November 23 and it was initially feared that he would be out until 2014.

And Baines, who revealed that the possibility of playing with pain-killing injections was explored, is reluctant to put a specific date on his return but remains optimistic about playing a role in the Christmas fixtures.

"The manager said early on it's quite a broad time frame that you can be looking at," the 29-year-old told Everton's official website.

"We thought about different things - injections and stuff - but we didn't know whether that would set us back further, so we are just trying to let it heal naturally at the moment.

"Obviously the schedule thickens up around Christmas and New Year, so you like to think you would be back and available to help the team at that point, but it's just one of those things. You have to wait and see."

The England international has endured a frustrating time on the sidelines but his team-mates have coped well in his absence, hammering Stoke City 4-0, winning 1-0 at Manchester United and claiming an excellent 1-1 draw at Arsenal on Sunday.

"I've not been able to do a lot to treat it [the toe] because it's a break, so I've just sort of tried to see how it heals really and take it a day at a time," Baines added.
"It's been pretty dull because you can't do a lot. There isn't that much treatment so it's just been a case of coming in and doing little bits of work in the gym and just hoping it recovers."

Everton, who sit fifth in the table, have four Premier League games before the end of the year, three of which are at home.

    Bayern extend Boateng contract

    349580_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng has agreed a three-year contract extension with the European champions, declaring it an "honour" to have committed his future to the club.

The 25-year-old's new deal will keep him at Allianz Arena until 2018, and the Germany international says he couldn't be happier to be prolonging his stay with last season's treble winners."Bayern are one of the great clubs in world football," he told the club's official website.

"To play here is not only a job, it is an honour."I want to achieve a lot with our team in the years to come."

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge also revealed his delight at the news, citing Boateng as a key player for Pep Guardiola's team."He is one of the major players at Bayern," he said."For this reason it was a natural fit that we have endeavoured to ensure a contract extension."

Boateng moved to the Bavarians in July 2011 after a short spell with Manchester City and played in his side's 3-2 Champions League defeat to his former club on Tuesday.

He has made 106 appearances for die Roten, and has won 36 caps for Germany since his debut in 2009.

Chelsea prepare to hijack Arsenal move for Barcelona sensation Sanabria

    346668_heroa.jpg

Chelsea are preparing to hijack Arsenal's January move for Barcelona teenager Tonny Sanabria.

The Gunners moved into pole position ahead of Roma to capture the 17-year-old after he rejected an improved contract from the Catalan giants.

It is understood that Arsenal have made Sanabria an offer and the Paraguayan is attracted by Arsene Wenger's trust in youth and the chance to follow in Cesc Fabregas's footsteps.

But Chelsea have now expressed an interest in the Barca B player and could be ready to trump Arsenal's attempt to land the forward.

Sanabria, who has already been capped by Paraguay at full international level, has asked for a move from Barcelona after growing frustrated by the collection of stars blocking his path to first-team football.

The teenager joined the Catalans' celebrated academy in 2009, aged 13, and has become a regular for the club's B team this season as well as scoring three goals in four matches for the Under-19s side in the Uefa Youth League.

Reports in Spain have said that Sanabria has a buyout clause of an initial £2.5 million in his Barcelona contract, which runs until June 2015.

It is expected that the youngster will switch clubs in the forthcoming window. Arsenal had led the race for the player after submitting an offer considered to be more attractive than that placed on the negotiating table by Serie A high-flyers Roma.

But Chelsea's late interest is a concern for the Gunners, who could be forced to up their offer to beat off competition from their wealthy London rivals.

The Gunners have prised a number of youngster from Camp Nou in recent years, with Fran Merida, Jon Toral and Hector Bellerin all following Fabregas in making the switch to the Emirates Stadium.

:baffled:Sneijder on Manchester United links: You never know

    349632_heroa.jpg

Galatasaray playmaker Wesley Sneijder has made it clear he is happy in Istanbul, but admitted "you never know" when prompted on interest from Manchester United.

Sneijder has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford, and United's midfield struggles this season have sparked fresh talk of the Dutchman joining the Premier League champions.

But speaking in the aftermath of Galatasaray's dramatic 1-0 win over Juventus that saw them qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League, Sneijder was keen to play down reports in the media.

He told NOS: "I know just as much as you. I don't even read the newspapers, but I've heard about the reports. At the moment it isn't an issue, but every time the transfer window is open, I get linked with all kind of clubs.

"Sometimes it's frustrating, because I have to clarify it with the fans. Here in Turkey, the supporters are very emotional. They have a lot of passion and I don't want to explain things that I don't know about.

"Again, I know just as much as you do. I feel very good at Gala, and I'm glad we're through in the Champions League. You never know, but at this point I'm happy here."
