AC Milan 2-2 Roma: Muntari denies Giallorossi

    351581hp2.jpg

AC Milan came from behind twice to earn a point in a 2-2 draw with Roma in Serie A on Monday night.

Sulley Muntari was Milan's hero as he struck a 77th-minute equaliser to snatch a draw and deny the Giallorossi all three points.

Mattia Destro had opened the scoring for the visitors early in the first half, but Cristian Zapata levelled just before the break.

Kevin Strootman looked to have sealed the points for Roma with a penalty early in the second period, only for Muntari's late strike to earn the hosts a share of the spoils. The Ghana international's intervention means Rudi Garcia's men are now five points adrift of champions Juve, while Milan move into the top half of the table.

Allegri made four changes from Milan's 2-2 draw at Livorno, with Christian Abbiati, Mattia De Sciglio, Daniele Bonera and Muntari all returning to the starting line-up.

Bradley replaced the suspended Miralem Pjanic for the visitors, while Destro started in attack after scoring the winner against Fiorentina last time out.

Roma started the brighter and made their early possession count with the opening goal in the 13th minute.Adem Llajic and Strootman combined well on the left before the Dutchman rolled the ball into Destro and the Italian striker fired home from six yards.

Despite Roma's dominance, Milan were level just before the half-hour mark through the unlikely source of Zapata.

Muntari rose unmarked at the front post to flick on a right-wing corner and the Colombian defender ghosted in to head home his first league goal of the season.

Moments later, Roma thought they had gone back in front through Bradley, but the American's hooked volley bounced on the goal line and spun away to allow Milan to clear to safety.

The hosts were forced into a change at the break as Abbiati was replaced by Gabriel in goal and the 21-year-old had the worst possible start as he gave a
penalty away five minutes after the interval.

Gervinho was released behind the Milan defence, only for the Brazilian to bring him down on the left-edge of the area. Gabriel was booked and Strootman made no mistake from the spot, sending the keeper the wrong way for his fourth Serie A goal.

After Bradley had missed another chance to extend Roma's lead, the hosts drew level again once more through Muntari on 77 minutes. The 29-year-old received the ball on the edge of the penalty area, jinked past Dodo and rifled his shot into the bottom corner.

Mario Balotelli had two chances to complete an unlikely turnaround for Milan in the closing minutes as he first saw a vicious 20-yard free-kick parried away by De Sanctis, before then dragging a left-footed shot wide of the post from inside the area in injury-time.

However, Allegri's team almost conceded with the last kick of the game, when Gervinho shot wide after smartly working an opening for himself.

Bale to miss Copa del Rey clash due to injury

    338017_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that Gareth Bale will miss Wednesday's Copa del Rey clash with Olimpic de Xativa due to injury.

The Santiago Bernabeu side were held to a scoreless draw in the first leg of the round of 32 tie and they will be without the Wales international when they attempt to book their ticket for the final 16 later this week.

Bale picked up a minor knock in Tuesday's training session and will be replaced by Angel Di Maria for the encounter in the capital.

"Gareth has picked up a small injury during training and will not be available for Wednesday's game," Ancelotti said at a press conference.

"Di Maria will take his place in the starting XI. Angel didn't play well against Osasuna, but he will get another chance on Wednesday.

"We will have to wait and see how Bale's injury develops, but I do not expect any problems for Sunday's game against Valencia."

Ancelotti then went on to discuss Madrid's title credentials in La Liga and claimed they will have to get close to a record points tally in order to reclaim the title.

"We all know that we will have to get around 100 points in order to win La Liga," added the Italian.

Madrid currently sit third in the league table with 38 points from 16 games, trailing joint leaders Barcelona and Atletico Madrid by five points.

Tottenham warned off Klinsmann by USA

    351643_heroa.jpg

United States Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati has warned Tottenham not to waste their time by pursuing Jurgen Klinsmann.

USA head coach Klinsmann has been linked with the White Hart Lane hotseat following Andre Villas-Boas' departure on Monday.

The former Germany striker, who has also been linked with the Switzerland job, was a big fans' favourite during two spells at the north London club in his playing days and would be a popular appointment.

However, the 49-year-old only signed a contract extension until 2018 last week after guiding the USA to next year's World Cup in Brazil and Gulati has no intention of allowing him to move on.

He told The Sun: "We are not oblivious to the fact Jurgen's success has attracted interest from outside the US.

"Therefore there were pragmatic market considerations in offering him a new long-term contract.

"It's not specifically the Switzerland or Tottenham issues - but the desire to have a commitment from him, contractually, for a long time is vital."

Klinsmann has taken the USA from 36th in the world - their lowest-ever Fifa ranking - to a current standing of 14th and they topped the final Concacaf stage by four points to secure their passage to Brazil.

Guardiola: Arsenal 'the most difficult team' Bayern could face

    343197_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola says Arsenal are the hardest side the Champions League holders could have faced in the last 16.

The two sides were pitted against each in Monday's draw in a re-match of their encounter last season – a game which saw the Gunners become the first side to win at the Allianz Arena in 2013, though they ultimately exited the tournament.

Arsene Wenger's charges are currently top of the Premier League table, and Guardiola has praised a side that he believes will pose a stern test to die Roten's hopes of retaining their crown.

"I know Arsene Wenger quite well, I know his players quite well," the Spaniard told reporters. "In the draw, it was the most difficult team."

The Bavarians are currently in Morocco for the Club World Cup, a competition Guardiola has won twice before with Barcelona and is keen to triumph in again.

"This tournament is very important, very prestigious. It’s not easy to qualify for it, nor to win it," he continued ahead of his side's semi-final clash with Guangzhou Evergrande.

"There are only two matches, the semi-final and the final, and simply put, we have to win them.

"You don't have the good fortune to take part in this competition very often in your life as a professional footballer and I'd like to express my gratitude to the team and Juup Heynckes because thanks to them I am here today."

Buffon not giving up on Champions League dream

    347890_heroa.jpg

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon refuses to give up on his dream of winning the Champions League.

The Italy international came close to winning European club football's elite competition in 2002-03 when the Turin giants were eventually beaten by AC Milan on penalties, but Buffon has failed to come close in the past decade.

The Bianconeri were seen as one of the dark horses to win the competition this year, but failed to progress from the group stages as Real Madrid and Galatarasaray proved to be too strong.

Nevertheless, Buffon remains hopeful of winning the Champions League before the end of his distinguished career.

"I dream about winning the Champions League and have been doing so for ages. I was dreaming about it as a kid and during my 17 years as a professional. It's my main goal and I hope that I can fulfil my dream," the 35-year-old told Corriere dello Sport.

"We already have a team that can do a good job in Europe. We are competitive and we could do well in the Champions League, but teams like Bayern, Madrid and Barcelona have a few more stars.

"We showed this year that we have the potential to do well, but we have to focus on other things again now."

Juventus finished third in their Champions League group to qualify for the Europa League round of 32, where they will meet Trabzonspor.

Van Gaal: Bayern & Barcelona success makes me proud

    347773_heroa.jpg

Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal is proud of his role in Barcelona and Bayern Munich's successes in recent years after he helped several of the clubs' current stars rise to promimence.

Andres Iniesta and Xavi made their full debuts under Van Gaal during his time at the Catalans, while the Dutchman promoted Thomas Muller and David Alaba to the first team while he was in charge of Bayern.

"When I see Barcelona playing with four of my players, and Bayern Munich as well, it makes me happy and proud. But the Xavis, Iniestas, Mottas, Mullers or Alabas fitted in the profile of the position," Van Gaal told the official Fifa website.

"For example, I talked with Alaba about the left full-back position. He didn’t want to play there. He was educated as a midfielder, but I had a vacant position for him because I had injuries and thought he could do the job. After a lot of talking, in the end, he played there because he wanted to help the team. Where is he playing now? Left full-back!"

Van Gaal then went on to highlight the importance of Bayern assistant coach Hermann Gerland to the Bavarians' recent success in Germany and on the continent.

"When I go to a new club, I always want to keep one coach from the existing staff and that person was Hermann Gerland, who is still working under Pep Guardiola. I wanted to know who was coming through the youth system – and he is the man who said to me: 'Muller, Badstuber and Alaba. These are the players.'

"So I let them train with the first team, I observed them – and then I decided where they were going to play. Also, Badstuber was originally a left-back and I put him as a left central defender."

Van Gaal won two La Liga titles and a Copa del Rey during his time at Barca, while guiding Bayern to the domestic double in 2009-10.

Bayern will not underestimate Arsenal again, says Hitzfeld

    338462_heroa.jpg

Former Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has stressed that the Bundesliga champions will not take the Champions League round of 16 tie against Arsenal lightly.

The Gunners were beaten 3-1 in the home leg in last season's encounter but came close to stunning the eventual winners when they won 2-0 at the Allianz Arena in the second leg, ultimately losing out to the German champions on away goals.

Hitzfeld has acknowledged the quality at Arsene Wenger's disposal but believes the Bavarians will have learned from their complacency in the 2012-13 encounter.

"Of course, Arsenal are a top team, but Bayern know them very well. They seemed to underestimate them in last year's second leg, but that will not happen again," Hitzfeld told AZ.

"Bayern will have learned from last year's mistakes.

"Arsenal might have Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla, Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski, but Bayern will progress."

Bayern will visit the Emirates Stadium for the first leg on February 18/19 or 25/26 before the return fixture in March.

Chelsea steal a march on Manchester United in race for Guarin

    346088_heroa.jpg

Chelsea look set to hand David Moyes and Manchester United another blow in the transfer market with Inter star Fredy Guarin ready to agree a move to Stamford Bridge.

It emerged last week that the Premier League champions had stepped up their pursuit of the versatile Colombian midfielder and had sent representatives to Italy to discuss a potential January transfer.

Guarin, however, would prefer a move to the west London club and sees the chance to play under Jose Mourinho as a decisive factor.

Chelsea would be prepared to pay up to €15 million for the former Porto player, an offer which is being seriously considered by the Serie A club.

Inter directors Piero Ausilio and Marco Branca were in London last week to discuss the deal but the club's president Erick Thohir will have the final say as to whether the transfer will be sanctioned.

Mourinho claimed earlier this month that he would not be looking to add to his squad in January, claiming: "It is my squad. For good and for bad, it is my squad. Of course, it is not the perfect squad but it is my squad and I work with them until the last day."

But with Frank Lampard struggling to contribute as much as he has done in the past and ageing enforcer Michael Essien reduced to a bit-part role this season, the Portuguese may see the opportunity to add Guarin's energy and industry too good to miss.

The 27-year-old's decision to snub United's interest would represent another damaging blow to Moyes' reputation in the transfer market following a shambolic summer which saw moves for Cesc Fabregas, Thiago Alcantara and Ander Herrera fail to materialise.

Moyes is understood to be under growing pressure to recruit well this winter having overspent significantly on his one major signing thus far, Marouane Fellaini, who has been far from an instant hit.

Guarin's contract at Inter runs until 2016 and his agent recently declined to comment publicly on United's efforts to sign him, except to state that "David Moyes appreciates him".

Manchester United star Fletcher 'couldn't leave the house' during nightmare illness

    351040_heroa.jpg

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher, who finally returned to first-team action on Sunday following a lengthy battle with illness, admits he thought his career might be over.

The Scotland international has struggled with ulcerative colitis since December 2011 and made his first appearance since Boxing Day of 2012 as a substitute in his side's 3-0 win over Aston Villa.

Fletcher revealed that he had been unable to leave his house for long periods and faced surgery which could have ended his hopes of resuming his career.

"I couldn't leave the house, it was as simple as that," he told reporters. "I couldn't take my kids to the park for a kickabout. Simple stuff. I couldn't go for a meal with my wife, just because of the nature of the illness

"There was the exhaustion side of it as well. It was proving difficult. I always had a belief that one of the medications would work [but] unfortunately that wasn't the case."

Following surgery, Fletcher faced a nervous wait for doctors to confirm whether or not the procedure had been successful enough for him to resume his career.

"There were no guarantees with the operation," the Scot recalled. "If it was not a success there was no way I would be able to play football.

"I didn't want to give it up. I worked hard to be a professional footballer; I always have. I didn't want to give it up. I always kept that determination. I was doing this operation not just to have a quality of life but also to get back playing football.

"Once I came out of that operation it was going to be 'this has either worked or it hasn't'. It was a very emotional day.

"There was a lot of fear and anxiety. Thankfully I was in the hands of an unbelievable surgeon. I put all my trust in him. He was confident, as long as I did everything right.

"All the tests were right and, when that moment came, it was such a relief.

"I am back to normal. I'm standing here now [and] I do not have ulcerative colitis. I have come through that now. I am leading a normal life. I am back playing football in the Premier League."

Too early to judge Liverpool title credentials, says Suarez

    351102_heroa.jpg

Luis Suarez believes that the busy festive period could determine whether or not Liverpool will be serious contenders for the Premier League title.

Brendan Rodgers' side sit just two points behind leaders Arsenal after their 5-0 hammering of Tottenham on Sunday and would move above the Gunners with a win over Cardiff City on Saturday.

But Suarez, who scored twice at White Hart Lane to take his tally to 17 goals in just 11 Premier League appearances this term, feels that upcoming trips to Manchester City and Chelsea will be major tests.

"I think it's too early to say," the Uruguayan said of his side's title hopes at the Football Supporters' Federation awards, where he was named Player of the Year.

"If we continue at this level the next two or three weeks, we can win the league or we can finish in the top four.

"It's important we concentrate and focus on the next game. We know that, after Cardiff, we have two very, very big games [at City on December 26 and Chelsea three days later]. That will be important to what comes next."

Suarez went on to express his gratitude to Liverpool fans for their reaction after his failed attempts to secure a transfer away from Anfield in the close-season.

The 26-year-old had publicly stated his desire to move to a club in the Champions League, with Arsenal having two bids rejected, but Reds supporters have him fully since his return from a 10-game ban for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic in April - a fact that he considers the highlight of a "difficult" year.

"I was able to win the supporters back and that was unbelievable when I came back to play," Suarez enthused. "They helped me and that was important for me, for my confidence, and for my family, because they are together with me in this."

Chelsea stars Mikel & Luiz wary of Galatasaray

    351534_heroa.jpg

John Obi Mikel believes Galatasaray will pose a real threat to Chelsea when they meet in the Champions League last 16.

The two clubs were drawn together on Monday in a tie that will see Blues legend Didier Drogba return to Stamford Bridge with the Turkish champions.

And while Mikel acknowledges the Ivorian will be dangerous for Galatasaray, he is also aware of other strengths in Roberto Mancini's side.

"They are a great team," the Nigerian told Chelsea's official website. "Didier, Wesley [Sneijder] - they have a good team and obviously they have Roberto Mancini who is trying to implement his philosophy and change the way they play.

"It will be tough but it's a game we're looking forward to. It will be good to meet old rivals, who you have played against in the past, as well as old team-mates."

Chelsea defender David Luiz echoed the thoughts of Mikel and believes playing the second leg at home could prove crucial if they are to progress to the quarter-finals.

"You can see how important it is for Galatasaray when they play at home," he said. "They qualified in the last game, which they had to wait one more day to play because of the snow, and they beat a team like Juventus.

"It's good for us to play the second leg at home, but for sure you need to get a great result to qualify, that's why we need to get a great result in the first game.

"We have to think that we need to win that game because even if we draw 0-0 and they come here and score an away goal, it will become a very difficult game."

Januzaj: Give Moyes time to be a Manchester United success

    327515_heroa.jpg

Manchester United midfielder Adnan Januzaj is confident that manager David Moyes will be a success at Old Trafford if given time.

Since making his first-team debut in August's Community Shield victory, the youngster has become a regular under the former Everton boss this season, scoring twice in 10 Premier League games.

However, Moyes has struggled after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson in the summer, with his side sitting 10 points behind leaders Arsenal in eighth place, but Januzaj says that fans must be patient.

"He will win trophies," the 18-year-old told MUTV.

"Don't forget, it is a new coach. Everything is new. You have to give it time.

"I think he is a good coach. All the players are ready to work hard as well and everything will come."

Januzaj, who arrived at United in 2011 after spending time in the FC Brussels and Anderlecht academies in his native Belgium, says that wants to stay at Old Trafford for "a long time".

"I am happy here," he enthused. "When I moved to Manchester I wanted to play with the first team. Now I want to stay here, play for a long time, if I can, and be the best player I can be."

Martino ‘surprised’ by Puyol retirement talk

    278474_heroa.jpg

Barcelona boss Gerardo Martino has admitted that suggestions captain Carles Puyol is considering retirement have come as a surprise to him.

Reports in Spain have claimed the defender is contemplating either retiring or moving to a lower level of football at the end of the season due to his problems with a knee injury.

But when asked about the subject at a press conference, Martino insists he has not held any discussions with the 35-year-old defender over his future.

"It is a surprise to me because Puyol has not spoken to me about that," he told reporters.

"All I can say is I have seen him training normally and putting in the required effort during training.

"He has not said anything to me so it would be a little unfair for me to clarify something that has not been discussed."

Despite being 4-1 up against Cartagena heading into the second leg of their Copa del Rey tie at Camp Nou, Martino has named a strong Barca squad.

Neymar, Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas and Puyol are all included in a 16-man roster for the game, with no space for any of the club’s B team players.

Martino continued: "You always have to play with the greatest level of respect for your opponents.

"My first choice is always to use players within the first team and – to be clear - this decision was taken before the B team lost against Murcia.

"Our last three games have been played at a very high level. We have obviously shown a big improvement and that was our objective after the two defeats."

Japan boss tips Honda to shine for Milan

    349575_heroa.jpg

Japan boss and former AC Milan coach Alberto Zaccheroni is expecting Keisuke Honda to make a big impact when he dons the famous Rossoneri shirt next year.

Honda will move to San Siro in January when his CSKA Moscow contract expires and the attacking midfielder could play a big part in reinvigorating a team that has faltered domestically so far this campaign.

Speaking to Radio Anch’Io Lo Sport, Zaccheroni said: “I’m convinced that he is a player who will be admired. He is physically strong, has excellent technique and great personality.

“I bossed Milan for three years and I know how much a player’s character is important in such a setup.”

It has been confirmed that Honda will wear the number 10 shirt for Milan, with the game at Sassuolo on January 12 expected to be his debut.

Zaccheroni went on to speak about Honda’s World Cup preparations and hopes his efforts between now and the end of the season will ensure the 27-year-old is in tip-top condition when he heads to Brazil next summer.

“He will need these months before the end of the season to prepare in the best way for the World Cup," the Italian added.

Honda’s new club were drawn with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last 16 today, but the Japanese international will be ineligible to compete in Europe this season following his appearances for CSKA Moscow in the competition.

Casillas: Madrid have to respect Schalke

    342729_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas believes that his side cannot afford to take Schalke lightly in their upcoming Champions League last 16 games.

The Spanish giants qualified from a group containing Juventus and Galatasaray at a canter, while Jens Keller's side needed a 2-0 home win against Basel on matchday 6 to pip the Swiss outfit to top spot.

However, Casillas believes that his team-mates must be wary of the Gelsenkirchen side due to their prowess on the counterattack.

“Maybe they are not one of the favourites to win the Champions League, but we will have to play very professionally and respect the other team," he told the club's official site.

“Schalke are very strong physically and play well on the break. We have the advantage of the second leg at home but we’ll go to Germany to win and try to go through to the next round.”

Madrid vice-captain Sergio Ramos, meanwhile, has echoed his skipper's calls for a professional performance and has spoken of his love for club football's top tournament.

"We're looking forward to the game because it's a competition that we really love," Ramos said.

"Like all Real Madrid fans, we're hoping to go as far as possible in the competition and we'll take this game seriously and respect our opponents."

Fletcher hopeful Manchester United illness nightmare is over

    351351_heroa.jpg

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher is confident his health issues are a thing of the past after returning against Aston Villa.

The Scotland international has been blighted by a chronic bowel condition for the past two years and made his first appearance since Boxing Day 2012 on Sunday.
Fletcher appeared for the last 20 minutes at Villa Park as a replacement for Ryan Giggs, as United recorded a comfortable 3-0 triumph.

The 29-year-old is hopeful his problems, which forced him to take a prolonged break from the game, are now behind him.Speaking to MUTV, Fletcher said: "This is it - I'm back for good. This is hopefully the game which means I'm back now.

"I seem to have come through the setbacks and health issues and I'm thankful for that. It's onwards and upwards now.

"I always believed I would come back; I kept that mindset. I think other people around me were trying to make me think otherwise, but I stayed strong and believed I would get back."Ever since I was a kid, I've wanted to play football. I've been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to play for Manchester United and I wasn't going to give that up lightly.

"I battled through it, and I'm only 29 years old. I think I've got plenty more years of playing left in me."I could have a career all over again if I get my health right, and hopefully that's what I'm going to do.

"I'm still building up my fitness, but I don't want to take it easy. I've done enough of that, and I want to be involved, to get us back to where I know we should be."

Casillas: Madrid have to respect Schalke
