:love:Stoke 0-2 Manchester United: Stunning Young & Evra strikes secure semi-final spot

    352119hp2.jpg

Ashley Young scored his first club goal for 17 months as Manchester United beat Stoke City 2-0 to reach the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup.

The England winger has lost his way at Old Trafford, but he produced a moment of quality in the second half on Wednesday to put United in front and end a goal drought that stretched to May 2012.

Patrice Evra made sure of the win with a lovely right-foot finish to enhance David Moyes' chances of winning a trophy in his first season at United.

Miserable conditions at the Britannia Stadium led to referee Mark Clattenburg taking the players off the pitch for just under 10 minutes in the first half.

Stoke beat United en route to winning this competition in 1972, but their wait for a second major trophy continues and the Staffordshire club have now lost 12 of their last 13 games against United.

United were without Wayne Rooney due to injury but Moyes is hopeful he will return in the near future. Adnan Januzaj and Ryan Giggs were left out as Chris Smalling, Anderson and Young started.

Thomas Sorensen, Erik Pieters, Jonathan Walters and Wilson Palacios came into the Stoke starting line-up.

Strong winds and driving rain ensured it would not be an evening for the faint hearted. Stoke were almost caught cold after only two minutes, but Young could only find the side-netting with a right-foot strike from the right side of the penalty area.

The weather deteriorated so badly that Clattenburg halted the game after 28 minutes amid a hailstorm and swirling winds.

Clattenburg led the players back out just under 10 minutes later, but the quality of football was no better as both sides struggled to retain possession.

Geoff Cameron produced a rare moment of quality just before half-time when he swung in a dangerous cross from the right, but the ball skimmed off the top of Walters' head and away to safety.

Jonny Evans then failed to react quickly enough when the ball fell into his path in the penalty area and Sorensen gathered.

Moyes replaced Anderson with Javier Hernandez 11 minutes into the second half with no sign of a breakthrough.

And Hernandez was involved in the opening goal six minutes later as Young played the ball into the Mexican and his touch fell nicely into the path of the onrushing winger, who lashed a vicious right-foot drive beyond Sorensen from just outside the area.

Young was brimming with confidence and the former Watford and Aston Villa man embarked on a run towards the area before getting his finish all wrong.

Pieters then whipped an inviting ball in but Walters somehow failed to get a touch before the Republic of Ireland striker's long-range strike was tipped over by David de Gea.

And Evra ended any hopes of a Stoke comeback 13 minutes from time when he burst into the box and curled a measured right-foot finish into the far corner.

    Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 Saint-Etienne (AET): Cavani snatches extra-time winner

    352137hp2.jpg

Edinson Cavani struck deep into extra time to end Saint-Etienne's hopes of retaining the Coupe de la Ligue trophy and keep Paris Saint-Germain's treble hopes alive.

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic suspended, the Uruguayan stole the limelight and opened the scoring in the first half after good work from Marco Verratti.

However, the game was sent into extra time when former PSG striker Mevlut Erdinc came off the bench to score a late equaliser.

Les Verts have proved a tricky customer for PSG in recent seasons but Cavani's 13th goal in 12 games ensured that it was Laurent Blanc's side who progressed to the quarter-finals.

Chances were few and far between the two sides in a tightly-contested opening 20 minutes with neither goalkeeper being seriously tested.

However, Cavani showed the touch of a man in form on 25 minutes when he controlled Verratti's cross at the back post excellently before taking the ball past Stephane Ruffier and stabbing the ball home.

The Saint-Etienne goalkeeper then produced a magnificent save to palm away Lucas Moura's stinging effort before denying Lavezzi with his legs on the stroke of half-time.

Christophe Galtier's side stole all three points at the Parc des Princes last November and they emerged a much stronger outfit in the second half.

However, it was PSG who continued to have the better of the chances and after Lucas was again denied by Ruffier, Cavani fluffed a golden chance to seal the win after being put through by substitute Javier Pastore.

That miss would prove costly and with 12 minutes remaining, Fabien Lemoine curled an inviting low cross into the box which Erdinc swept beyond Nicolas Douchez to silence the home crowd and send the game into extra time.

With both sides visibly tiring, the match seemed destined for penalties but Cavani had other ideas and justified his expensive price tag by popping up at the back post to tap in Jeremy Menez's cross with just three minutes to play.

Saint-Etienne knocked PSG out of this competition on penalties last term, but there was to be no repeat this time around.

Real Madrid 2-0 Olimpic de Xativa: Di Maria & Illarramendi stave off upset

    352132hp2.jpg

Real Madrid eased into the last 32 of the Copa del Rey with an easy 2-0 victory over Olimpic de Xativa at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Carlo Ancelotti's side had failed to break down the minnows in the first leg just under two weeks ago, but first-half goals from Asier Illarramendi and Angel Di Maria saw them stride into the next round.

Buoyed by their goalless draw at home in the first fixture between these two sides, the visitors began the fixture in an adventurous mood, but without really troubling Madrid.

The hosts gradually began to showcase their superior security and Di Maria chipped a free kick inches over the bar after Francis was adjudged to have taken the ball out of his box in his attempts to claim a threatening through ball.

The Argentine winger was involved once more in the move which led to the opening goal, lifting a delicious ball into the danger-zone on the quarter-hour mark which Jese squared to Illarramendi to place into the back of the net for his first goal for the capital club.

Shortly afterwards, the second arrived. Isco attempted to head a wild ball across the face of goal to keep the attack alive and it struck Kike Alcazar on the arm.

The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Di Maria managed to score - albeit with the ball striking the post after a strong palm from goalkeeper Francis.

The two goals knocked the wind out of Olimpic's sails. They sat far further back in an attempt not to concede the ball and Madrid were happy to keep possession, with the match effectively wrapped up.

The second half followed much the same pattern as the latter part of the first. Madrid were in complete control of the ball, while the Segunda B outfit were happy not to on the end of a cricket score and sit deep.

The hosts had a few flashes; Casemiro saw a long-range effort shoot wide of Francis' post, Jese made a great run into the box only for his square pass to find a blue shirt and Xabi Alonso had an ambitious strike easily saved by Francis.

Towards the end of the match, Olimpic streamed forward once more, but were unable to find a goal which would have gone down in the club's history.

Juventus 3-0 Avellino: Bianconeri set up Fiorentina clash

    352090hp2.jpg

Juventus set up a Coppa Italia quarter-final clash with Fiorentina after beating Avellino 3-0.

The Bianconeri opened the scoring after just seven minutes through Sebastian Giovinco's wonderful, curling effort.

The forward controlled a pass from Fabio Quagliarella on the edge of the box before shifting the ball onto his right foot and dispatching a fine effort into the far corner.

It didn't take long for the Serie A champions to double their advantage. Six minutes later it was 2-0 to the home side, with Giovinco again at the heart of the goal.

The Italy international delivered a fine free-kick into the penalty area which found the head of the unmarked Martin Caceres and the defender was left with the easiest of finishes.

Juve were all but out of sight and with just nine minutes remaining of the opening period they all but booked their place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Another brilliant free-kick from Giovinco caused all sorts of problems in the visitors' box and this time Quagliarella was on hand to prod the ball home at the near post to make it 3-0.

Juve's dominance continued in the second half as Avellino goalkeeper Giuseppe Di Masi just about held on to Quagliarella's powerful free-kick, while Stephan Lichsteiner should have scored when he steered wide one-on-one in injury-time.

Antonio Conte's side couldn't add to their tally before the referee blew his full-time whistle, but their first half efforts proved enough and the Viola now await in the last-eight of the Coppa Italia.

Tottenham 1-2 West Ham: Nightmare start for Sherwood as Hammers rally to go through

    352134hp2.jpg

Modibo Maiga's first goal in more than a year helped West Ham come from behind to win 2-1 at Tottenham in their Capital One Cup quarter-final.

Mali international Maiga had gone 12 months and 17 days without scoring for West Ham but picked the ideal time to end his drought, heading home fellow substitute Mohamed Diame's cross with five minutes left to book his side's place in the semi-finals.

Only five minutes earlier, winger Matt Jarvis drew the visitors level with an excellent finish from inside the box as the visitors ruined Tim Sherwood's first match in charge of Tottenham.

Sherwood – Spurs' technical co-ordinator and caretaker manager after Andre Villas-Boas was sacked on Monday – saw his side take a deserved lead in the 67th minute as Emmanuel Adebayor, making his first start of the season, volleyed home Jermain Defoe's cross.

But they faded dramatically after that as West Ham won at White Hart Lane for the second time in less than three months.

Tottenham had not lost back-to-back home games against West Ham since 1966 and to make matters worse, had winger Andros Townsend limp off with a left hamstring injury late on.

Sherwood made six changes from Sunday's 5-0 loss to Liverpool, which proved to be Villas-Boas' last game at the helm, and reverted to a 4-4-2 formation, as Adebayor partnered Defoe up front, while Kyle Walker wore the captain's armband with Michael Dawson suspended.

West Ham made seven changes and were on the back foot early, as Lennon charged down the right and cut back for Gylfi Sigurdsson, with Defoe shooting just wide in the second minute.

Townsend then fizzed an effort past the post from 25 yards and the chances continued for Tottenham as Joey O'Brien nearly headed into his own net after an excellent Lennon cross and then Adebayor nodded wide from a Townsend ball.

The hosts had five corners inside the first 16 minutes but dropped off after that as West Ham finally settled, although their best effort was a Carlton Cole strike from 25 yards that was easily saved.

Lennon and Sigurdsson failed to hit the target with efforts just after the break, while in the act of giving the ball back to Tottenham after George McCartney needed treatment, West Ham defender James Collins nearly scored with a downfield punt that saw Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris scrambling.

Tottenham finally made the breakthrough with 23 minutes left when Defoe charged down the left and looped a perfect ball into the path of Adebayor, who thrashed his effort in off the underside of the crossbar to score his first goal since May.

West Ham substitute Diame tested Lloris and Matt Taylor drew two saves out of the French goalkeeper, before their pressure told with 10 minutes left.

Taylor played in Jarvis and he shot into the top left corner, before Maiga's winning header delighted the away fans.

Sigurdsson had another effort saved in injury time and Maiga was denied a second by the crossbar, but it mattered little as West Ham held on.

Moyes pleased to see Manchester United weather Stoke storm

    352141_heroa.jpg

David Moyes was pleased with the way his Manchester United side coped with testing conditions to reach the Capital One Cup semi-final.Referee Mark Clattenburg took the players off the field for just under 10 minutes amid swirling winds and a hail storm during the first half of the quarter-final against Stoke City at Britannia Stadium on Wednesday.

Play resumed with Ashley Young scoring his first United goal for 17 months in the second half and Patrice Evra adding a second goal as the Premier League champions secured a 2-0 win.United will now play Sunderland in the semi-finals next month as Moyes eyes a trophy in his first season at Old Trafford.

The former Everton boss told Sky Sports: "I think especially in the first half it was very difficult for the players to play."It was one of the worst conditions, players will say to play in heavy winds is as bad as anything."The first goal was always going to make a big difference, we were in control after that and then we got the second goal and saw the game out well."

Sunderland are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League, but Moyes will not be taking Gus Poyet's side lightly after they beat Chelsea in the quarter-finals on Tuesday night. He said: "I'm glad we are through, it will be a tough semi-final against Sunderland now.

"It's a cup game and it shows you how Sunderland are playing that they beat Chelsea. They have a new manager now so it will be tough, but we are just glad to get through."Stoke manager Mark Hughes, meanwhile, had no complaints after the game and admitted United deserved to progress to the semi-finals.

He told reporters: "I thought we made a fair fist of it in the first half against all the elements and thought we were in decent shape.

"Our organisation was good, United weren't creating too many chances. But United, on the night, deserved to win, they just had a little bit more power and pace.

"We weren't able to ask enough questions of them in the second half."

Conte snubs media following Coppa Italia win

    351156_heroa.jpg

Juventus coach Antonio Conte refused to speak to the media in the wake of his side's 3-0 win over Avellino on Wednesday.

The former Siena boss served a touchline ban last term for failing to report match-fixing activity during his time at the Tuscan club.

Ferdinando Coppola, a goalkeeper during Conte's time at the club, accused him of knowing of an attempt to fix a match between the Artemio Franchi outfit and AlbinoLeffe on May 29 and letting the players decide what to do.

Conte had released a statement slamming the allegations, which were widely picked up by Italian media, and duly refused to speak to reporters after his side's victory in Turin.

Meanwhile, Fabio Quagliarella scored his side's third goal of the straighforward Coppa Italia victory and spoke of his delight at having taken his first-team chance.

"We’re pleased. Tonight’s victory belongs to a group that always trains well and does everything our boss asks of us.

"The players change, but the result is the same. I’m also happy for my goal as it’s always satisfying to put in a good performance when called upon."

    Pepe hoping for Alonso renewal

    351789_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid defender Pepe says he hopes Xabi Alonso hands the club the perfect Christmas gift by signing a new contract.

The Spain international's current deal runs out at the end of the season, with some rumours linking the midfielder with a return to former club Liverpool.

But Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is determined to keep hold of the 32-year-old, particularly in light of Sami Khedira's long term injury and those sentiments have been echoed by Pepe.

The 30-year-old told reporters: "Xabi is a great player. we are happy with him and we hope that he renews soon, but we have still not heard anything."

Los Blancos ran out 2-0 winners over Olimpic de Xativa in the last-32 of the Copa del Rey on Wednesday night. Asier Illarramendi's 15th minute strike and a 25th minute penalty from Angel Di Maria ensured Madrid's progress ahead of their Liga clash with Valencia on Sunday.

:cool:Moyes sweating on Rooney fitness for West Ham clash

    349706_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager David Moyes has confirmed striker Wayne Rooney has picked up a groin strain and could miss Saturday's game against West Ham at Old Trafford.

The England international was left out of United's Capital One Cup quarter-final clash at Stoke City on Wednesday due to the problem, which United won 2-0 thanks to goals from Ashley Young and Patrice Evra.

Speaking after the match Moyes told reporters: "Rooney has got a groin strain". When asked if he had a chance for he added: "He's got a chance".

The news is a blow to the reigning champions, particularly with fellow striker Robin van Persie set for a month on the sidelines with a thigh strain that rules him out of the traditional busy run of December games. The Premier League champions face West Ham, Hull City, Norwich City and Tottenham in the space of a 12-day period that starts with Saturday's visit of Sam Allardyce's men to Old Trafford.

Rooney is the side's top scorer in the league this season with eight goals in 14 appearances and has earned regular praise from Moyes for his fine form.
United are eighth in the Premier League, some 10 points adrift of leaders Arsenal.

    Ronaldo: Bale is doing amazing

    347637_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo believes Real Madrid team-mate Gareth Bale has acclimatised to life at the club and says he is "doing amazing".

The winger moved to the Santiago Bernabeu in a world record €100 million deal from Tottenham over the summer, but struggled with injury in the early weeks of the season.

Since then the Wales international has produced something like his best form, scoring seven goals in 10 Liga appearances so far this season and Ronaldo is hoping he will play a key role in the club's quest for honours.

The Portuguese told Marca: "Bale is doing amazing. He started a little bit slow with injuries and small problems. It's normal because he didn't do any pre-season.

"Afterwards he's been under a lot of pressure. It's hard but I think he's now in a good way, he's integrated more in the team. People like him, the supporters and players want him here. I hope he can help us win trophies."

Ronaldo's future with los Blancos came under the microscope following the arrival of Bale, but the 28-year-old signed a new five-year-deal in September - a decision the former Manchester United forward is glad he made.

"This is why I signed a new deal. This is my house, my home. I feel unbelievable here. I love the club, I love the people, I love the supporters.

"I don't know when the end of my career will be, but at this moment I'm so proud and happy to be here."

Madrid media out to get Messi, says Fabregas

    349165_heroa.jpg

Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas has alluded to a campaign against both the Catalan club and Lionel Messi by the Madrid media.

Messi’s father was the subject of unsubstantiated reports in a national newspaper earlier this week that linked him with alleged criminal activity, but Cesc says such stories are merely part of a propaganda ploy to unsettle both Barca and the Argentine forward.

"Something is happening,” the former Arsenal captain told sports show Jugones on La Sexta. “There are people taking advantage to say things they shouldn't, with no facts or proof.

“After six years of praise, people start to get bored and look for other things, as if there needs to be a change in who is the best. But Leo is [the best], and he does his talking on the pitch - and that’s where he does it best."

Cesc also spoke of an alleged campaign by the Madrid media in favour of Real’s Cristiano Ronaldo and in detriment to Messi ahead of next month’s Ballon d’Or.

"As soon as he gets injured, it seems as if he has done nothing,” the Catalan complained. “It's like they need another player to mark the rhythm of world football.

"But I have played with him and I have played against him, and I don't think we will see another player like Messi in many, many years."

    Hiddink signs new Netherlands deal

    315827_heroa.jpg

Guus Hiddink has signed a four-year contract with the Netherlands national team, Goal has learned.

The Dutchman has agreed to take over as coach from Louis van Gaal after the 2014 World Cup for two years, to be followed by a two-year spell as technical supervisor of the national side.

It is not expected that Hiddink will be unveiled by the Dutch Football Federation until the new year but sources have said an agreement is now formally in place.

Hiddink, who managed Netherlands from 1994-1998, has spoken in recent weeks of his interest in taking over the national team for a second time.

The 67-year-old has been out of the game since resigning as boss of Anzhi Makhachkala in July, which, when he took over at the Russian club in February 2012, had been his first permanent club post in six years.

Hiddink is an experienced international manager, having managed Russia, Australia, South Korea and Turkey in addition to his native country.

One of the most successful Dutch coaches in history, Hiddink had been considered by Tottenham for a short-term role as they drew up a list of successors to Andre Villas-Boas, who was sacked on Monday.

The north Londoners made contact with Hiddink's representatives but he was not keen on a repeat of the interim role he had at Chelsea in the second half of the 2008-09 season.

Spurs have put Tim Sherwood in temporary charge and are prepared to make their former midfielder the club's next permanent manager if he impresses at the helm.

Moyes: No loan offers for Manchester United starlet Zaha

    351984_heroa.jpg

David Moyes has not received any offers for Wilfried Zaha but hinted the Manchester United winger may be allowed to go out on loan.

The 21-year-old has found first-team opportunities hard to come by since completing his permanent move to United from Crystal Palace at the end of last season, with only three competitive appearances to his name

Goal understands United are keen on Zaha joining Newcastle until the end of the season, and Moyes has reiterated that he would consider a temporary move for the England-21 international.

He told MUTV: "I did say to Wilf if I didn't feel he was getting enough games, I would consider [allowing him to leave on loan].

"Obviously if we've got injuries or other reasons, I wouldn't take it on board.

"But the truth is we haven't had anybody phoning up and wanting to do that at the moment.

"While it's like that, I am fine."

Zaha has made two substitute appearances in the Premier League this term, but is yet to start a top-flight fixture.
