Guarin agent confirms Chelsea transfer talks

    349912_heroa.jpg

The agent of Inter midfielder Fredy Guarin has confirmed that talks over a transfer have already taken place with Chelsea.

Goal reported on Wednesday that Chelsea had stolen ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign the Colombian, who is excited by the prospect of playing for Jose Mourinho.

And while United manager David Moyes had sent representatives to Italy to discuss a deal, agent Marcelo Ferreyra has admitted that he has already been in London to talk to the Blues.

"I can confirm Chelsea's interest in Fredy," he told Caracol Radio. "It's now up to the clubs to discuss a deal. We'll open talks once they have agreed terms.

"We have already been to London with Inter and met with Chelsea directors to make their interest formal.

"There have been talks as part of negotiations. If both clubs reach an agreement, a transfer is an option, but Fredy is happy at Inter as well if they don't agree terms.

"Fredy feels important under [coach Walter] Mazzarri. The upcoming World Cup also plays a role. We will also meet with [Inter owner Erick] Thohir to see what Inter's project looks like."

Lewandowski frustrated with lack of goals for Borussia Dortmund

    328328_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski has voiced his frustration with his goalscoring record this term and feels his profligacy has cost his side at times this season.

The Poland international currenly leads the Bundesliga goalscoring charts with 11 goals from 16 games, yet he has admitted that he could easily have added more to his tally.

"Am I happy with my own performances so far? No, not at all. I might have scored 11 times, but I should have scored many more goals," Lewandowski was quoted as saying by Bild.

"I cannot say how many more, but I should definitely have scored a few more goals."

Lewandowski added that he alone was not to blame for Dortmund's lack of cutting edge at times this season and insisted the number of chances his side have been creating was an encouraging sign.

"That's not just my problem, but a problem for the entire team as well. We did not drop so many points because we played badly, but because we have missed a lot of chances," continued the 25-year-old.

"We must become even more eager in front of goal. On a positive note, we create a lot of chances. It would be a bigger problem if we did not create anything."

Dortmund currently sit third in the Bundesliga table with 32 points from 16 games.

'I came here to win titles' - James Rodriguez sets his sights on the jackpot in Monaco

    300889_heroa.jpg

Monaco's extravagant summer recruiting spree may have dominated the headlines, but amid Joao Moutinho, Radamel Falcao and Eric Abidal - all stars of the present - was one name that represents the future: James Rodriguez, on whom the principality outfit spent a stunning €45 million.

Though the hefty transfer fee may well seem surprising for some, the investment speaks volumes for how James - still just 22 - has risen very quickly from humble beginnings to become one of the most prized assets in European football.

He started his career in his native Colombia with second-division club Envigado before Banfield snapped him up after only one season of first-team action in 2008.

n 2010, he got his move to European football and despite a great deal of wrangling over the status of his ownership, Rodriguez's 25 goals in 65 league games for Porto were attracting the attention of big clubs around Europe, including Juventus and Manchester United. But only Monaco, backed by Russian owner Dmitry Rybolovlev, were willing to pay the €45m buyout clause in his contract, which they did in May, also raiding the Dragao to buy Moutinho.

James' salary went from a weekly €13,000 in 2010 to €83,000 - at a far better tax rate - on a five-year deal at his new club, as negotiated by agent Jorge Mendes.

It is a remarkable journey for Rodriguez, one of the most exciting talents in European football, to end up at a team fresh out of Ligue 2 but the 22-year-old insists that the allure of playing alongside his new team-mates drew him.

He told Goal: "I don't know if other football countries or clubs were interested in me. The only thing I know is Monaco were. They have good players and that interests me. That's why I'm here."

And former Colombia boss Francisco Maturana believes his compatriot will only continue to grow during his time in the principality.

"He's had a meteoric career," he told Goal. "When I spent time with him with the Colombia Under-20 team he was a kid with a good touch and who was very motivated. He was good technically, [with] a lot of talent. He was confident and that's been fundamental in his success.

"He went to Porto and carried on improving. He's still young and hasn't reached the maximum of his potential.

"He left his homeland very young and has moved from one country to another. Now he's with Monaco. I don't think he has problems adapting to new nations. Everything depends on the player's mentality. We saw Fredy Guarin, for example, also move around very young and it's gone well for him, too.

"It's not for me to give an opinion about the size of the fee that Monaco paid. They have the conditions to pay what they want. If they're happy with him, then that's fine."

    299704_heroa.jpg

On the rise | Rodriguez is a key player for club and country despite his tender age
With Rodriguez and Falcao to the fore, Colombia, complete with first-seed status and a negotiable group, are seen as dark horses for the World Cup next year and Maturana is delighted with the game's development in his country.

"Colombia produces a lot of top players because there is a very good foundation backed up by a strong level of competence. Of course, this gives value to Colombian football as well as to its footballing image."

Reflecting on his development, Rodriguez puts his move down to the form he showed last season and says he is determined to continue in that vein in his pursuit of further silverware.

"I had a good season with Porto and this helped. I always want to play well in every game and want my team to win. Monaco are going through this scenario. Now this new project they have interests me a lot and I came here to win titles, too.

"I've been playing with great players who have been top figures and are now here. We know we have good players and a team who can win the league. PSG are strong and others are good too. But we'll compete with them until the last game."

However, Monaco's gain on the pitch has been Porto's loss. The summer sales of Rodriguez and Moutinho have been blamed for the previously dominant team's indifferent season so far under new coach Paulo Fonseca. The Portuguese have already been eliminated from the Champions League in the group stages.
However, Rodriguez believes the strong structure of the club will see them bounce back, despite the summer sales.

"Porto have always had players and coaches leave but they still win every year. They are a winning team by nature. Despite my departure and that of Joao, they'll keep winning for many years."

Former Porto vice-president Antonio Figueiredo, however, has a far less optimistic outlook. "The miracle is over," he told Radio Renascensa recently. "Porto sold the best they had and what came in was not the best compared with those who left.

"Paulo Fonseca is the victim of what they gave him. But Porto will quickly overcome the crisis. What I don't know is if it will happen this season."

Contrastingly, Monaco added Falcao to the signing of James and Moutinho and are well on their way to joining the European elite at the top of the club game.

Pirlo & Pogba will remain at Juventus, says Marotta

    339541_heroa.jpg

Juventus general director Giuseppe Marotta is confident that Paul Pogba and Andrea Pirlo will opt to sign new contracts with the Serie A champions rather than leave the club.

Pogba, 20, has been heavily linked with a transfer to Paris Saint-Germain in recent weeks, while 34-year-old Pirlo's future at Juventus is increasingly in doubt as he approaches the end of his current deal.

Moratta, however, is hopeful that both midfielders will commit to the Bianconeri in the near future.

"There will not be a present under the Christmas tree in the form of a contract renewal, but we are calm over the situation," Marotta told Rai Sport when questioned about the future of Pogba and Pirlo.

"We have a great relationship with both players and they see Juventus as their home. This is their natural habitat and it will be hard for them to find a batter place. I am optimistic that the situation will soon be solved."

Juventus are currently preparing for Wednesday's Coppa Italia clash against Avellino.

Arsenal not on Calhanoglu's radar - agent

    312010_heroa.jpg

Arsenal were never among the clubs interested in signing Hamburg starlet Hakan Calhanoglu in January, according to the player's agent.

The Turkish midfielder - who has impressed in the Bundesliga this season despite HSV struggling for results - was linked with the Gunners earlier this month, prompting Hamburg sporting director Oliver Kreuzer to insist he was not for sale.

Arsene Wenger also dismissed the reports as mere speculation, and now Calhanoglu's agent Bektas Demirtas has revealed that the north Londoners were never an interested party - although he expects an offer from an unnamed Premier League club which competes in the Champions League.

"We never said Arsenal is interested in Hakan," Demirtas told Goal. "They're definitely not among the candidates."

When asked whether there was any chance that Calhanoglu could leave Hamburg in January, he replied: "In football anything can happen. But it is a fact that Hakan is under contract at Hamburger SV until 2016."

Demirtas revealed that his client's priority is to secure a new contract with Hamburg in the near future, but insists there is no rush to open talks.

"We don't feel any pressure and are not in a hurry to extend the contract," he continued. "It is up to the club to move now and approach us."

Calhanoglu has also been linked with Turkish champions Galatasaray, and the 19-year-old has admitted that Roberto Mancini's side have made contact.

"Tugay Kerimoglu, the assistent coach of Galatasaray, called me and told me they want to have me in winter," he is quoted as saying by Sport Bild.

Arsenal monitor Diego Costa with view to January raid

    349741_heroa.jpg

Arsenal scouts will travel to Atletico Madrid's two matches this week to run the rule over in-form striker Diego Costa.

Arsene Wenger and the Gunners' chief scout Steve Rowley have identified the Brazilian-born Spain international as a potential January target as the Premier League leaders step up plans to reinforce their front line.

Scouts have been instructed to assess Costa in Wednesday night's Copa Del Rey clash against Sant Andreu and Saturday's La Liga match against Levante, both of which take place at Vicente Calderon.

Costa has been in sensational form this season, scoring 22 goals in 21 Atletico games, including 17 in 16 in the league. Costa heads the Primera Division scoring charts alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, seven ahead of their nearest rivals.

The Atletico spearhead signed a contract extension in August that extended his agreement until 2018 but it is understood a fresh buy-out clause believed to be around €38 million was inserted in the new deal.

Arsenal have made contact with Costa's representatives as they lay the foundations for a serious assault on the January market. They have been alerted to the potential availability of the player, who is believed to be on a relatively low wage at Vicente Calderon.

Olivier Giroud has almost single-handedly led the Gunners' attack this season, with Nicklas Bendtner brought back into the fold in late September to provide the only senior alternative to the Frenchman.

Wenger’s priority remains to capture a top striker after moves for Luis Suarez, Gonzalo Higuain, Stevan Jovetic and Wayne Rooney all fell through last summer, while the Gunners were also unable to agree a last-ditch loan deal for Chelsea’s Demba Ba.

Wenger is well aware of the difficulties in landing A-list options in the notoriously difficult January window, when the big clubs are reluctant to sell their best players.

But he is prepared to push the boat out to land a big name as the Premier League leaders bid to maintain their title challenge.

The manner in which Costa has taken on the Atletico scoring baton left by Radamel Falcao when the Colombian joined Monaco last summer prompted a tug-of-war for his services between Brazil, the country of his birth, and Spain. Costa played in two friendlies for Brazil earlier this year but, since obtaining dual citizenship, he recently announced his desire to play for Spain and was called up for November friendlies only to pull out through injury.

Klopp plays down Club World Cup

    352366_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp has played down the Club World Cup as rivals Bayern Munich prepare to contest the final.

The Bavarians are through to Saturday's showpiece and will face Raja Casablanca, who are only involved in the competition as a representative of host nation Morocco. And asked whether he would be happy to see Pep Guardiola's men lift the trophy, Klopp insisted he would not be donning a Bayern shirt for the occasion.

"Well, if we are honest, if Bayern wins, I would really like it," he joked. "But its not that I'm sitting in front of the TV on Saturday evening and wearing Bayern things.
"I have seen the game against the Chinese team (Guangzhou Evergrande). Okay, but they won another title (the AFC Champions League).

"But now you're facing Casablanca. If Humphrey Bogart doesn't play - that's the last time I heard about Casablanca."Maybe some day it (the competition) will be of a higher value."Dortmund welcome Hertha Berlin to Signal Iduna Park on Saturday and Klopp revealed that he has fresh concerns in relation to Sebastian Kehl and Jakub Blaszczykowski, who were forced to withdraw from training on Thursday.

"Marcel Schmelzer was able to train properly without any problems, the full week," he added."Ilkay Gundogan could do a lot as well alone and with the team. He is not at 100 per cent yet, but it's positive news.

"Sven Bender isn't training yet, so he is a strong doubt for Saturday. Other than that Sebastian Kehl and Jakoub Blaszczykowski stopped training. I'm not sure if it was injury or just something harmless. Both will rest for today."

Rosell: Messi deserves to be the best-paid player in the world

    337692_heroa.jpg

Barcelona president Sandro Rosell says Lionel Messi deserves to be the highest paid footballer in the world.

Reports have suggested Messi, 26, who is under contract until the summer of 2018, is chasing an improved contract after seeing Neymar arrive at Camp Nou in a big-money deal in the summer.

At Real Madrid, Gareth Bale signed a lucrative contract as part of his world record €100 million move to the Santiago Bernabeu, while Cristiano Ronaldo penned a new five-year-deal with los Blancos to make him the game’s top-earner.

“We have not yet spoken to Messi about a new contract but the door to our office is always wide open,” Rosell told reporters.

“He has to be the best-paid player in the word because he is the best player on the planet.”

Rosell had also said last week: "At the moment there are no discussions but while I am president, I think it would be extremely difficult for Messi to leave the club, if not impossible."

The 49-year-old also discussed the extension of Andres Iniesta’s contract, which is set to be made official in a deal that will keep him in Catalonia for another four-and-a-half seasons.

Rosell continued: “I can confirm the renewal – it is a great Christmas present for everyone connected to Barcelona.

“The new contract will run until 2018, then year by year in accordance with his sporting performance.

“Staying top of La Liga is even harder than getting there. We have to battle against everyone and everything, because we are the best and we represent what we represent.”

Pardew keen on Manchester United youngster Zaha

    342465_heroa.jpg

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew would be keen to sign Manchester United forward Wilfried Zaha in January "if the opportunity arises".

Goal understands that the Red Devils want Zaha to join the Magpies on loan, despite his reluctance to relocate to the North East.

The England Under-21s international has made only made two Premier League appearances from the substitutes' bench since completing a permanent move to Old Trafford from Crystal Palace at the end of last season and Pardew is sad to see that "his career has stalled".

"He's a Manchester United player, as far as I'm concerned," the Newcastle boss told the press. "He's a player I know well. He played for my old team [Palace].

"He was absolutely phenomenal when they got promoted and he got a big move to Manchester United.

"Unfortunately, his career has stalled but, if an opportunity arises, we'll grasp it. If not, we won't."

Pardew has also set his sights on securing a place in the Europa League next season, although he knows from experience that it is not easy to combine an assault on Europe with the demands of the Premier League.

"The Europa League causes massive problems for Premier League teams," he observed. "Swansea City and Tottenham are feeling that [this season].

"The demands of the Premier League are much greater than other leagues. It's something we're wary of but we're chasing a European spot."

Bale deal not financed by bank, insists Perez

    352318_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has denied that Spanish bank Bankia helped finance the world-record transfer of Gareth Bale.

The Welsh winger signed for the Bernabeu outfit from Tottenham in September for €100 million, sparking claims by Dutch MEP Derk Jan Eppink that the bank, which was bailed out by the Spanish government last year, had helped pay the fee.
But Perez moved to vehemently deny those claims on Thursday.

"We have not done a deal with any financial body, for the umpteenth time, as I've said ad nauseam," he told Desayunos Deportivos de Europa Press."People in football know what's actually going on and what is not.

"Bankia did not pay for the transfer of Gareth Bale, we completed it using our own resources. The financial statement was made public and all our shareholders have a copy of it.

"Now it's said that [Bankia] helped transfer Bale to us and it's a lie. Real Madrid paid for him with significant resources and I'm a little annoyed to have to speak about it."

At the time of his complaint, Eppink threatened to refer the case to the European Commission, who on Wednesday confirmed that they would be investigating the legality of public funding at Real, as well as Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao, Valencia, Osasuna, Elche and Hercules.

Perez believes there is "a campaign against Spanish football".Meanwhile, the Commission is also set to look into whether the reported land transfer between the City of Madrid and Real involved any state aid in favour of the club.

"In regards to our business with the Ciudad Deportivo (Sports City training ground), there was a complaint and a subsequent investigation," added Perez. "They wanted to hurt us but nothing happened."

Arsenal midfielder Wilshere banned for two games

    351744_heroa.jpg

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has been suspended for two games, the Football Association has confirmed, after being found guilty of making an offensive gesture during the Gunners' defeat to Manchester City.

As the north Londoners were beaten 6-3 at the Etihad Stadium, the England international was caught on camera appearing to extend his middle finger towards supporters.

Deemed a "sending-off offence" by the FA's three-person panel covering events not seen by officials during matches, the gesture has cost Wilshere his eligibility for Monday's Premier League encounter with Chelsea.

He will also miss the Gunners' Boxing Day clash with West Ham.

"Whilst admitting the charge, Wilshere claimed the standard sanction for this offence was clearly excessive," said a statement on the FA's official website.

"The [Independent Regulatory] Commission rejected this claim and the two-match suspension will commence with immediate effect."

Argentina will win the World Cup - Maradona

    334550_heroa.jpg

Diego Maradona says Argentina will win the World Cup in Brazil, but that they cannot ignore the threat posed by Spain and Italy.

The Albiceleste qualified in pole position from the Conmebol standings and were drawn in Group F alongside Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iran and Nigeria for next year's showpiece in Brazil.

Argentina last won the World Cup in 1986, beating West Germany 3-2 in the final, and Maradona, who played in the Mexico tournament, believes the current national team can repeat the feat his side managed.

"There will be a repeat of 1986 in Brazil. Argentina will be world champions. Germany and Netherlands are also very good, both Spain and Italy cannot be ignored," he told Sport.

Maradona also says his country's people do not appreciate what they have in Barcelona star Lionel Messi.

He added: "We Argentines don't know how to enjoy what we have, in football and in life in general. There's always something to compare it to. Messi should be left alone, don't compare him any more."

Tottenham are interested in De Boer, says agent

    348995_heroa.jpg

The agent of Ajax coach Frank de Boer insists that Tottenham are interested in hiring the former Netherlands international as Andre Villas-Boas' replacement.

Tim Sherwood took charge of Spurs for Wednesday's 2-1 loss to West Ham in the Capital One Cup, and could get the job permanently if he impresses.

But Guido Albers told Voetbal International that despite there being no official approach, he is aware of Spurs' interest in the De Boer.

"Through several channels it became clear to me that Spurs would have an interest," he revealed.

"But the club did not come to Ajax. So from our point of view there's not much to say about it. Frank isn't even thinking about it. He's fully focusing on Ajax."

De Boer is regarded as one of Europe's brightest young coaches, having led Ajax to three consecutive Eredivisie titles and a series of impressive displays in the Champions League.

Any move to White Hart Lane would see the Dutchman reunited with former Ajax stars Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen.

Kroos: I never doubted my Bayern future

    350643_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos has said that he never had any doubts that he would make it at the Allianz Arena.

The Germany international was linked with a move away from the club in the summer following the arrivals of Mario Gotze and Thiago Alcantara.

However, he has been an integral part of Pep Guardiola's starting XI this term and was always certain he would keep his place in the team.

"Of course I noticed what was said and there were many people of this opinion," he told TZ.

"But I was always sure and I had some conversations with really important people. Ultimately, though, it depends on what I show on the pitch. And that's why I was relaxed."

Kroos and Gotze have often featured together this term and Kroos is delighted with the impact the former Borussia Dortmund man has made.

"Mario is a fantastic footballer. I told him when he joined that we would have a lot of fun together. And that he would be a success with me and with Bayern," he continued.

Bayern take on Raja Casablanca on Saturday in the Club World Cup final and Kroos says 2013 has been an incredible year from him, despite injury ruling him out of the run-in to the Bavarians' treble.

"It was very positive! We have won everything there was to be won as a team. For me personally, I always played up until the phase of injury," he said.

"I've always had my place in the starting XI. That's why I'm very satisfied."

    Iniesta agrees Barcelona extension

    346741_heroa.jpg

Barcelona have reached an agreement with Andres Iniesta over a new contract until the summer of 2018, the club's official website revealed on Thursday.

The attacking midfielder's previous deal was due to expire in June 2015 and a number of clubs were closely monitoring the 29-year-old's situation at Camp Nou.

Nevertheless, Iniesta has now ended all speculation about his future by agreeing a three-year extension to his existing contract.

Iniesta came through the ranks of the Barcelona youth academy and has made 479 official appearances for the Blaugrana since making his first-team debut under then head coach Louis van Gaal in 2002-03, scoring 48 goals in the process.

The Spain international has won 21 trophies during his time at Barca so far, including six La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies.

Iniesta will sign the deal on Monday to become the fifth Barcelona player to agree a new contract until 2018 after Sergio Busquets, Cristian Tello, Lionel Messi and Neymar.
